5-0 out of 5 stars Never go back to bubble jet again...
I bought this printer last minute. The printer I had before went out on me and I needed something quick. I do a fair amount of printing and this thing is awesome! Not a single glitch, setup took less than 5 min and it was ready to rock and roll. It has fair price for what it is capable of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast, inexpensive and versatile
There are a ton of people out there running home businesses like me (I'm a full-time medical transcriptionist)who need the speed and economy of a B&W laser printer, but don't want or need a $500-1,000-plus "office-type" unit.

Enter the Brother HL-5140, the perfect, affordable, reliable B&W laser printer for a small business that does a lot of printing (where the cost of ink jet cartridges and slow printing can be VERY expensive).

Several years ago, typical of my venerable HP LaserJet 6P that is still working very well, HP produced great inexpensive laser printers while Brother followed their lead and made great products too.

Unfortunately, HP decided to focus on a very profitable "niche market" a couple of years ago and started making a bunch of cheap plastic printers that would have more consumer appeal when it comes to printing photos instead of continuing to make top-quality low to moderate-cost B&W laser printers.

But Brother has continued to make reliable printers that are actually made of metal -- what a concept. My Brother 5140 weighs in at about 24 pounds, it's made of metal and there's nothing flimsy about it.

So here are the pros and cons of the Brother HL-5140:

PROS:

1. Everything that Brother purports to deliver in terms of printing speed for the 5140 would appear to be accurate. This is one VERY FAST laser printer (rated at 21 ppm).

2. The best thing about the 5140 is how easy it is to install and set up. It's all completely intuitive and the enclosed installation CD makes the process quick (15 minutes or less) and simple.

3. Most people won't care about this very obvious plus, but it's VERY important to some of us old dinosaurs who still use DOS programs. So I need to employ a printer that will accept a parallel connection instead of just USB.

I'm not really a dinosaur, and I use MS Word for everything else, but I still use WordPerfect 5.1 DOS for my work. So I need a printer that will connect on a parallel port and print out my work.

The 5140 with PCL-6 emulation supports all of the latest DOS printer drivers too. No problems printing from DOS in any application.

CONS:

As I've said, the 5140 gets my top rating and it's a definite buy. But there are a couple of things you might want to be aware of:

1. I haven't tried the feature, but other reviewers have given the printer a thumbs-down in terms of its rendition of graphics. Personally, I could care less. If I need graphics I'll use my inkjet printer instead.

2. The usual printout path up to the front output tray can tend to curl the printouts a bit more than you'd like depending on temperature and humidity.

All in all, it's a terrific printer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What do you expect for the price?!?!
I bought this for under $150 on sale.Mine came with a rebate so it was even lower. The speed at which pages come out of the printer make it well worth the price paid.If this thing dies in six months I would have gotten my money's worth and I wouldn't even object to getting another one!I do get some of the curling mentioned but I'm also using a $2 ream of paper.I'm sure with better paper it will be fine. The pages are far from unusable though.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mac Friendly
I purchased this to use with my new iBook. The compact size nicely reflects the compact size of my portable iBook.Conectivity is great via USB and it found the printer right away.No complaints here, and I print daily on this machine.Good machine for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent quality and price
This Brother printer is a great value for the price.I purchased this machine for my home and it has performed flawlessly.I haven't seen any of the excessive curling mentioned in previous reviews, but then again, I'm using a quality laser paper.I have ran a few larger print jobs, printing various manuals and it churns right through them. The best part is it's small enough to fit on my desk and still leaves me room to work, not like past laser printers I've owened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great print quality and speed again
I have purchased this machine for the new compact design and high speed for the price. This machine has met every expectation for a personal laser printer in speed and quality.Print quality is very good.I would strongly recomend the HL-2040 where space is a necessity. Also Brothers lower opperating cost help.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but problems
I can't print more than 10 pages before the printer has a "fuser unit failure" and has to sit for fifteen minutes before it will reset. This has happened 3 times so far and I am still waiting for the printer to reset as we speak.I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this piece of junk. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Paper curls
This is a good printer. The only drawback is that the paper comes out curled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Default printer
I got tired of buying cartridges for my inkjet. So, I put the color inkjet on a wireless print server in a closet, for when I really want something in color.I installed this as my primary, plugging it into my router. The installation was very easy, as the installation CD that came with it found the printer right off, and effortlessly installed all the drivers.I was up and running in 5-10 minutes.Much faster than an inkjet, and from what I can figure, will cost about 2.5c per page to print. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I'm a new loyal customer to Brother
*** I am editing this previous review due to the fact this printer has become complete junk within two years. To confirm what everyone else is saying, this printer has a very limited shelf-life and prints grey pages after a certain period of time. The toner cartridge is still half-full, and cleaning the drum unit has no effect. In essence, this is not a product you should be spending your hard-earned money on.

To reaffirm this opinion, please look at the other Amazon reviews and pay attention to who has posted a review after six months of use. While I have not contacted Brother's Technical Support, I don't feel this would be useful anyway since everyone else is affirming they are no help at all. Please look elsewhere and avoid the modest reviews for this printer because it deserves nothing but harsh criticism.

(My old review is below:)

****

After my new archaic (and plain pathetic) HP inkjet printers died, I knew I had to move on to laser. This is my first laser printer and I can proudly say I made a wise choice with this purchase. Everything about this product is amazing!

The HL-1440 model and the Samsung ML1210 are probably the two most popular newly-released models, after all the research I've done. I suggest checking out reviews from zdnet.com, pcworld.com, and cnet.com if you're choosing between these two models. I saw both at CompUSA but the Brother to me had a more appealing design and sharper, crisper pictures and texts at low fonts. I definitely suggest test printing out a local retailer before committing to any model.

As for specifics, the Brother model was EXTREMELY easy to install and setup. However (and this is becoming more commonplace with the computer stuff I buy), there were no cords!
The AC adapter was there, but no parallel cable or USB cable to connect to the PC. I wished I could have been saved the hassle of going out and buying a USB cable myself.

The specs say that the printer is guaranteed to work with Windows 2000, and then when you open up the software CD inside, it says "final drivers for Windows 2000 are available at brother.com" so I was really uncertain if this would work well for my home setup. Fortunately, the printer works absolutely perfectly under Windows 2000 with the provided drivers so I didn't have to go to the manufacturer website.

One caveat that may not be apparent in pictures (which is why I recommend checking the printer out at a store before you buy). Unlike the Samsung ML-1210, the Brother printer has its own tray that handles up to 250 sheets. However, the tray is oversized and sticks out from the back of the printer! Hence, the tray is so big that dust and sunlight can get in from behind to sneak into the paper supply and possibly fade or diminish the paper quality through time. I've solved this by taping a sheet of plastic over the opening, but I think customers should know about this anyway, especially considering the pictures you find on the net won't reveal this design flaw.

But in terms of raw performance, I'm more than pleased with the product. Various test prints show that resolution is indeed super sharp at 1200dpi, and it spits out sheets at 15 ppm! There is no manual included with the printer; other than a simple quick installation guide, all of the documentation and in-depth installation procedures are included on a CD-ROM that includes drivers for all versions of Windows and the Mac!

..., as for another very minute design flaw, the bottom of the printer came a little warped, because I can slightly rock the printer from side to side (it's extremely minor and won't affect printing at all). Just something I figured people might want to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why buy any other brand?
This printer is clearly the best value in its class. It comes standard with twice as much memory as the more expensive HP LaserJet 1000 and unlike the HP can be upgraded. Other comprably priced units simply don't offer the same features and upgradability.

Although it's hard to be sure of its performance over the long term, I bought this printer to replace an eight year old Brother HL-600. Eight years is of trouble-free service is pretty remarkable for a computer product these days. In fact, I am only replacing my old printer because the drum unit was just now starting to go.

My only complaints about this model are that a.) it doesn't come with a printed instruction manual; b.) 2 MB of standard memory is pretty stingy, particularly considering how cheap memory is now; and c.) the paper tray sticks out the back a few inches, leaving it exposed to dust and light (but the good side is that this allows printing of legal size sheets).

The first two complaints are pretty standard with most computer products, though, so it's hard to hold them against Brother specifically (especially considering the HP 1000). I am also glad that printer manufactures moved away from expensive proprietary memory chips in favor of standard SIMMs. I would recommend just going ahead and maxing out the memory at 34 MB if you ever plan on printing anything other than text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer, excellent investment
The Brother HL-1440 was probably wisest computer related purchases I had ever made. It performs extremely well. The print quality is on par with the HP I use at work. After having printer more than 1000 pages I had yet encountered a problem (paper jam, etc). No problem with printing mailing labels and envelopes either. I only wish that they would include in the package a printed user manual and a USB cable.

Note that the printer can do 15 ppm if you're printing the same page over and over again. Otherwise you get around 6 ppm.

The printer takes a single standard 72pin SIMM (I'm using a 8meg, Fastpage module--not sure about EDO RAM; I do know that a double-sided module wouldn't fit). So if you have an old computer lying about, you can save a few bucks by opting for the HL-1440 instead of the HL-1450 then upgrading the memory yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little printer
I've had this printer for about four months now and it works great. I use it as a print server through a router and it hooked up and worked easily. Good quality text and graphics though I'd offer that the laser on my high end work lasers may have a bit more contrast. I bought a generic memory card for $8. The auto off is a nice feature and first print time even when its been off is very reasonable - about 20 seconds. Toner prices, even when you eventually need to replace the drum, are still about the cheapest of any laser.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tank of printers
Almost three years on and this thing keeps going and going. I've abused it pretty badly -- it has dried Diet Dr. Pepper on just about every free surface, I've dropped it countless times, and it just keeps spitting out good printed pages. The parallel port is useful for older computers or even new ones if you need your USB ports for anything. I've had to replace the OEM toner cartridge once, and that's it. I rated this four stars when I bought and upped it to five now. One of the best purchases I've ever made. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Short Drum Life
When I first started using this printer/copier/scanner, I thought it was a wonderful machine at a great price. But by the time I had almost used up my first toner cartridge, my printed pages contained white stripes, so I needed to replace the drum. Oh, Brother! The drum costs over half of what the entire printer does. Since the drum is considered a consumable, it is not covered under warranty. Maybe it would be cheaper to only use this machine as a copier/scanner, and get a separate laser printer to do my printing from the computer...

1-0 out of 5 stars Choose Another Printer!
I thought I would be quite happy with this printer when I found it at a reasonable price. But with its splotchy printing, low drum capacity, and expensive drums, I found it cheaper to buy a HP 1012 than to keep this one running. Even the starter drum on the HP 1012 last longer than the DCP 1000 drums.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive printer/copier
I work for a sole practitioner attorney. When the HP LaserJet III finally died at the office, we tried running the office on an Epson ink jet printer for several days. As that was completely inadequate, we looked around for an inexpensive laserprinter which would handle a duty cycle of about 3,000 pages per month. We decided on the DCP-1000 because it had a built in copier with sheet feeder, was reasonably fast, and was inexpensive. We have had it for about half a year, and the only thing I really dislike about the unit is the way it spits paper out the front without an adequate recepticle.

The printer is excellent for the size of our projects, which tend to be less than 30 pages, and has stood up to the paper output of our office, which includes four networked workstations. It is also nice to have a copier with a sheet feeder for small jobs so we don't have to run to the copier half way across the building we work in.

Several reviewers have commented about the price of the replacement drums and the speed with which they and the toner cartridges are used up. The fact is that the toner refills are only about $30, which is less than half the price of the cartridges used on almost any other laser printer. So, the fact that you have to spend $120 on a drum every 20K copies or so is the trade-off. This means it is no more expensive per copy than just about any other laser printer.

It would cost at least an extra $150 to purchase any other printer/copier and get the same functionality. For around $300, you get print quality which is good enough to hand to a judge, a copier with a multisheet feeder which makes good 600 dpi quality copies, and a color scanner which is adequate for occasional use and for OCR. This makes it a very cost effective unit for a home or small office.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine Printer
The price is right. I've been using it for a long time now without a glitch. The paper does have a tendency to curl, and the output "tray" is not wonderful, but the thing "rocks".

5-0 out of 5 stars Drum problems? No way!
I've had this copier/printer for several months now and I find it to be a really cool and useful tool in my office. I can get really cheap compatible toner on the internet for it, so the cost of using it is therefore....cheap! Haven't had any problems with the drum. But the way I see it, I'm saving a lot with the cheap toner, so when the drum goes out, oh well. The machine functions really nicely. I love the document feeder. In fact, I like the whole package so much that I just ordered another via the web for $245.00 shipped. Drums can be found at databazaar.com for just $118.00. My opinion on the naysayers....you just got yours from a bad batch. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Print problem
There seems to be a print problem with these printers. I was thrilled to see the price with so many features. So I ran down to a local store to try one out. Both of the ones in the stores had lousy test prints. I then used a picture and did a copy. Even copying black and white. The prints are soo grainy. It looks like it reverted back to 300 dpi prints. I don't see how the machine could be advertised as high resolution machine? Perhaps it is just a software mistake? Anyway I returned to the office and I found several others on the net had similar problems. So I would stay away until brother resolves this problem. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled
The machine itself it great. Easy to use etc. But it's the dudes who programmed the "artificial intelligence" in this thing that really messed it up and has me pissed off.

If one of the cartridges goes out, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING! Supposedly the fax doesn't even work. Huh? This is an obvious attempt that they just want you to buy buy buy more cartridges than you need.

I only use the black. I have never touched the colors. But for some reason, the colors run out before the black. What the...? And now they want me to replace everything before the machine will be usable again. I looked at the colors, and it clearly still has A LOT of ink or whatever inside. And there isn't a way to fool the machine by just taking it out and putting it back in.

I'm really thinking about just filling it with toilet water to let the machine think there's something inside. Don't know if it'll work. But here's the bottom line. I ran through the whole set (or the machine thinks I did) of ink in 4 months. So here's what you need to know. It costs about $80 or so to replace the set. So do you really want to pay $240 a year just to use the fax machine? If you actually do some printing, think $400+. This is lame. Fellow users. Anyone have suggestions please help us all.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This thing looks great, but I have had two major problems

1) The printer will not print if it thinks one of the ink cartridges is empty, which happens often when they are not empty: it has happened to me with nearly new cartridges. It essentially renders the device useless. Anyone know how to work around this? Please post a review if you do.

2) The paper feeder does not pick up paper unless I manually hold my finger against the tension arm. Clearly inconvenient, especially if you want to receive faxes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
Seems like a great buy, but the unit shuts down when it 'thinks' the ink cartridges are empty. I'm replacing FULL cartridges after only about 50 B/W pages. I'll try replacing one time, but if this continues, I'll have to replace the unit. NOTE there is no manual override, the printer will NOT work if it thinks a cartridge is empty. My cost? 50 pages for $20 of ink, 40 cents a page. Use Kinkos, it's cheaper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent fax, Acceptable color printer-copier, Great price
Amazon's service was very good. The box arrived well ahead of the estimated date.

You can't beat the price tag ... with 5-in-1 capabilities. While this is not a photo-quality printer, it is great for office use. At this price, it offers 4 separate inkwells that can be purchased separately based on your level of usage -- not offered by the competition. Please note that the Amazon product description which says that the product includes a handset is incorrect.

The unit is a breeze to set up as copier, printer, outgoing fax, scanner and PC Fax (set aside 30mins, max). However, setting this up for incoming faxes when you have an answering machine on the same line is very difficult because it is not completely documented (Solution: Set TAD, and set number of rings for receive to 1. Also, don't have any filters installed on the answering machine outlet and fax outlet). While the hold time when I called Brother Customer Service was more than 45 mins, once I got thru, they were able to resolve this issue thoroughly and courteously.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Based on all the reviews I purchased the MFC3100C model about 10 months ago to replace a HP printer I had used for 3 years. I use it lightly for home use and have not even had to replace any of the print cartridges yet. The outbound fax portion and scanner still work great but, unfortunately it will not feed paper in from the rear sheet feeder any longer. I am very disappointed in the quality of this printer. I think I will hook the HP back up and start looking for a new all in one not from Brother. ... Read more
