Enter the Brother HL-5140, the perfect, affordable, reliable B&W laser printer for a small business that does a lot of printing (where the cost of ink jet cartridges and slow printing can be VERY expensive). Several years ago, typical of my venerable HP LaserJet 6P that is still working very well, HP produced great inexpensive laser printers while Brother followed their lead and made great products too. Unfortunately, HP decided to focus on a very profitable "niche market" a couple of years ago and started making a bunch of cheap plastic printers that would have more consumer appeal when it comes to printing photos instead of continuing to make top-quality low to moderate-cost B&W laser printers. But Brother has continued to make reliable printers that are actually made of metal -- what a concept. My Brother 5140 weighs in at about 24 pounds, it's made of metal and there's nothing flimsy about it. So here are the pros and cons of the Brother HL-5140: PROS: 1. Everything that Brother purports to deliver in terms of printing speed for the 5140 would appear to be accurate. This is one VERY FAST laser printer (rated at 21 ppm). 2. The best thing about the 5140 is how easy it is to install and set up. It's all completely intuitive and the enclosed installation CD makes the process quick (15 minutes or less) and simple. 3. Most people won't care about this very obvious plus, but it's VERY important to some of us old dinosaurs who still use DOS programs. So I need to employ a printer that will accept a parallel connection instead of just USB. I'm not really a dinosaur, and I use MS Word for everything else, but I still use WordPerfect 5.1 DOS for my work. So I need a printer that will connect on a parallel port and print out my work. The 5140 with PCL-6 emulation supports all of the latest DOS printer drivers too. No problems printing from DOS in any application. CONS: As I've said, the 5140 gets my top rating and it's a definite buy. But there are a couple of things you might want to be aware of: 1. I haven't tried the feature, but other reviewers have given the printer a thumbs-down in terms of its rendition of graphics. Personally, I could care less. If I need graphics I'll use my inkjet printer instead. 2. The usual printout path up to the front output tray can tend to curl the printouts a bit more than you'd like depending on temperature and humidity. All in all, it's a terrific printer. ... Amazon.com Product Description Setup with the HL-1440 is simple and straightforward, with connections for both parallel port and USB. It comes with a standard 250-sheet paper tray and supports manual duplexing. A manual paper feed is handy for inserting unusually thick papers. The drivers utilize economical power and toner-saving modes, and the unique Shockwave-based Print Management System! (software) combines straightforward operation with an exciting interface. Weighing about 17 pounds, this desktop printer has a footprint of 17 by 15 inches and supports TN-430, TN-460, and DR-400 toner cartridges. The standard 2 MB of memory is easily upgraded to 34 MB. Optional networking is supported, and a second optional paper tray is easy to install. Both PC and Mac compatible, the HL-1440 comes backed with a one-year warranty on parts and service. To reaffirm this opinion, please look at the other Amazon reviews and pay attention to who has posted a review after six months of use. While I have not contacted Brother's Technical Support, I don't feel this would be useful anyway since everyone else is affirming they are no help at all. Please look elsewhere and avoid the modest reviews for this printer because it deserves nothing but harsh criticism. (My old review is below:) **** After my new archaic (and plain pathetic) HP inkjet printers died, I knew I had to move on to laser. This is my first laser printer and I can proudly say I made a wise choice with this purchase. Everything about this product is amazing! The HL-1440 model and the Samsung ML1210 are probably the two most popular newly-released models, after all the research I've done. I suggest checking out reviews from zdnet.com, pcworld.com, and cnet.com if you're choosing between these two models. I saw both at CompUSA but the Brother to me had a more appealing design and sharper, crisper pictures and texts at low fonts. I definitely suggest test printing out a local retailer before committing to any model. As for specifics, the Brother model was EXTREMELY easy to install and setup. However (and this is becoming more commonplace with the computer stuff I buy), there were no cords! The specs say that the printer is guaranteed to work with Windows 2000, and then when you open up the software CD inside, it says "final drivers for Windows 2000 are available at brother.com" so I was really uncertain if this would work well for my home setup. Fortunately, the printer works absolutely perfectly under Windows 2000 with the provided drivers so I didn't have to go to the manufacturer website. One caveat that may not be apparent in pictures (which is why I recommend checking the printer out at a store before you buy). Unlike the Samsung ML-1210, the Brother printer has its own tray that handles up to 250 sheets. However, the tray is oversized and sticks out from the back of the printer! Hence, the tray is so big that dust and sunlight can get in from behind to sneak into the paper supply and possibly fade or diminish the paper quality through time. I've solved this by taping a sheet of plastic over the opening, but I think customers should know about this anyway, especially considering the pictures you find on the net won't reveal this design flaw. But in terms of raw performance, I'm more than pleased with the product. Various test prints show that resolution is indeed super sharp at 1200dpi, and it spits out sheets at 15 ppm! There is no manual included with the printer; other than a simple quick installation guide, all of the documentation and in-depth installation procedures are included on a CD-ROM that includes drivers for all versions of Windows and the Mac! ..., as for another very minute design flaw, the bottom of the printer came a little warped, because I can slightly rock the printer from side to side (it's extremely minor and won't affect printing at all). Just something I figured people might want to know.
Although it's hard to be sure of its performance over the long term, I bought this printer to replace an eight year old Brother HL-600. Eight years is of trouble-free service is pretty remarkable for a computer product these days. In fact, I am only replacing my old printer because the drum unit was just now starting to go. My only complaints about this model are that a.) it doesn't come with a printed instruction manual; b.) 2 MB of standard memory is pretty stingy, particularly considering how cheap memory is now; and c.) the paper tray sticks out the back a few inches, leaving it exposed to dust and light (but the good side is that this allows printing of legal size sheets). The first two complaints are pretty standard with most computer products, though, so it's hard to hold them against Brother specifically (especially considering the HP 1000). I am also glad that printer manufactures moved away from expensive proprietary memory chips in favor of standard SIMMs. I would recommend just going ahead and maxing out the memory at 34 MB if you ever plan on printing anything other than text.
Note that the printer can do 15 ppm if you're printing the same page over and over again. Otherwise you get around 6 ppm. The printer takes a single standard 72pin SIMM (I'm using a 8meg, Fastpage module--not sure about EDO RAM; I do know that a double-sided module wouldn't fit). So if you have an old computer lying about, you can save a few bucks by opting for the HL-1440 instead of the HL-1450 then upgrading the memory yourself.

Features Reviews (10)
The printer is excellent for the size of our projects, which tend to be less than 30 pages, and has stood up to the paper output of our office, which includes four networked workstations. It is also nice to have a copier with a sheet feeder for small jobs so we don't have to run to the copier half way across the building we work in. Several reviewers have commented about the price of the replacement drums and the speed with which they and the toner cartridges are used up. The fact is that the toner refills are only about $30, which is less than half the price of the cartridges used on almost any other laser printer. So, the fact that you have to spend $120 on a drum every 20K copies or so is the trade-off. This means it is no more expensive per copy than just about any other laser printer. It would cost at least an extra $150 to purchase any other printer/copier and get the same functionality. For around $300, you get print quality which is good enough to hand to a judge, a copier with a multisheet feeder which makes good 600 dpi quality copies, and a color scanner which is adequate for occasional use and for OCR. This makes it a very cost effective unit for a home or small office.

If one of the cartridges goes out, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING! Supposedly the fax doesn't even work. Huh? This is an obvious attempt that they just want you to buy buy buy more cartridges than you need. I only use the black. I have never touched the colors. But for some reason, the colors run out before the black. What the...? And now they want me to replace everything before the machine will be usable again. I looked at the colors, and it clearly still has A LOT of ink or whatever inside. And there isn't a way to fool the machine by just taking it out and putting it back in. I'm really thinking about just filling it with toilet water to let the machine think there's something inside. Don't know if it'll work. But here's the bottom line. I ran through the whole set (or the machine thinks I did) of ink in 4 months. So here's what you need to know. It costs about $80 or so to replace the set. So do you really want to pay $240 a year just to use the fax machine? If you actually do some printing, think $400+. This is lame. Fellow users. Anyone have suggestions please help us all.
1) The printer will not print if it thinks one of the ink cartridges is empty, which happens often when they are not empty: it has happened to me with nearly new cartridges. It essentially renders the device useless. Anyone know how to work around this? Please post a review if you do. 2) The paper feeder does not pick up paper unless I manually hold my finger against the tension arm. Clearly inconvenient, especially if you want to receive faxes.
You can't beat the price tag ... with 5-in-1 capabilities. While this is not a photo-quality printer, it is great for office use. At this price, it offers 4 separate inkwells that can be purchased separately based on your level of usage -- not offered by the competition. Please note that the Amazon product description which says that the product includes a handset is incorrect. The unit is a breeze to set up as copier, printer, outgoing fax, scanner and PC Fax (set aside 30mins, max). However, setting this up for incoming faxes when you have an answering machine on the same line is very difficult because it is not completely documented (Solution: Set TAD, and set number of rings for receive to 1. Also, don't have any filters installed on the answering machine outlet and fax outlet). While the hold time when I called Brother Customer Service was more than 45 mins, once I got thru, they were able to resolve this issue thoroughly and courteously. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!
