1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate purchase. Worst radio I have ever owned.
The signal rejection is horrible. That is to say, I set it to my favorite NPR station and another station 11.5MHz higher booms over it. I did this experiment right next to my Sangean clock radio, and I also tried the (Great) GE 7-2887 Portable radio. The non-Philips units worked perfectly, so it wasn't some anomaly wth the ionosphere (unfortunately, they aren't water proof, and make no claims to be). So I opened the back up (where the battery compartment is) to have a look around. Although the batteries themselves were dry (there is separate seal for them) the screws that hold the radio together were rusted. I bought this unit in November and it's rusting--this in a product built for use in the shower... So, buy it if you want to hear multiple stations at once, and don't get it near water.

4-0 out of 5 stars I just bought it. Will edit review after extended use.
I bought the Philips Shower Radio from J&R Music.

Being a shower radio, I didn't really expect it to produce a really good sound. I was pleasantly surprised and disappointed with the audio quality. The sound is lound and audible even with the shower running. Unfortunately, the sound is also very hollow and it took about a week to get used to it.

The AM reception is excellent in the NYC/Jersey metro area.

I had a slight problem trying to house the antenna tail into the battery compartment and worried that water might leak in. To date, I have experienced no problems.

The major drawback of this product though is the power button. I don't get the sense that I'm actually pressing the button. One must rely on one's ear and not on sense.

A minor nusiance is that Philips does not publish the instruction manual online, forcing me to store the print instruction manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the price this can't be beat!
We just moved into an older home which has few electrical outlets- especially in the bathroom. Morning showers were not the same without music, so I wanted to buy something that was water resistant (and inexpensive!). This product really was a great choice. For the size, the sound quality was really very good. The unit itself comes equipped with a pig-tail antennae, but I did not even need it. The radio is kind of a weird chunky shape, but that is not a problem. The control buttons are encased in plastic, so if you want to change a station with wet hands, no problem! What I found as an added bonus was the built in clock. ( I also found out my husband was right, I do take 30 minute showers!!). If you decide to go with this radio, you will not be disappointed! Battery life is really good also!

1-0 out of 5 stars bad
i think this radio is verry ugly and the quality of the sound is not as good as i thought it would be. Thats why i rated this 1 star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes a great gift
This is a great product to give as a gift for those people that have everything. It is a great way listen to the radio when taking a shower. Look at the price, its very reasonable so I have given a couple to those in my family which are hard to buy for. My mom loved it for Mother Days instead of flowers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 years, 5 kids, still working
I purchased this product for my then 11 year old son 2 years ago. All components are still functioning well. This is terrific, in light of the fact that for most of those 2 years it was regularly dragged on car trips (since the tape player on our van broke), as well being mishandled by 3 young children. I purchased another brand for my daughter, and hers has not held up nearly as well. The CD player broke and the tape player eats tapes.
This has been a solid product, and I am planning to replace my daughter's with one.

1-0 out of 5 stars looks good but CD player didn't work
My title says it all. Opened the box, tried it, the CD player did not work at all... returned it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled by the Price!!
I was excited when I got a gift certificate from my hubby and kids for Valentine's day to I knew just what I wanted. After much looking I settled on the Philips CD and Cassette boombox. What a mistake! I've had it only a month and today I boxed it back up and I'm sending it back. The base boost is terrible. The sound is muddy and cd's sound terrible. The cassette player started playing my cassettes backwards! These are new cassettes and work fine in my car. The reception on the AM and FM bands were lousy. I was VERY disappointed with this product. I only hope I will get a full refund. This is not a good product. It looks better than it really is. Cheaply made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy!
This is a perfect dorm room stereo. It is attractive, pretty solidly put together and has a very nice sound with surprisingly good stereo separation. The CD player is also very good, and the FM tuner is well above average (actually more sensitive than the nice Bose system that won't be headed for the dorm). My only regret is that it doesn't come with a remote, but of course that's not a surprise. For the price, it's a great deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Sound!
This little boombox from Philips has a big sound! I wanted something small and compact that didn't cost a lot to take to the beach and this was perfect. I didn't expect it to sound so good, almost as good as my stereo system at home. Its lightweight so great for travel to the beach, pool or camping. I love it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you see this on eBay, buy it!
I did. Then I read another review that here that talked about its limited remote control functions, and I got worried. Fortunatly, the reviewer was way off base. The neck strap remote is unique and has volume control, skip, and scan modes. The unit does remember the last song played as well. There is a minimum amount of wires to fuss with because the ear phones are plugged into the top of the neck strap. I'm really happy with this MP3 player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this for ease of use and style
Ease of use is best to describe the player. It has a drag and drop interface so there is no need to use a program to transfer music. There is no copy protection on the player so music can be copied to another computer with ease. The remote on the player controls play/pause, skip to forward, skip backward, volume up and volume down. The player resumes playback at the start of the last song played. As for the controls on the player, it's simple as there is one switch. The off/charge position and the position. I never worry about batteries as I leave it charging in the USB port and when I flip the switch it shows up as a removable storage device. It comes with an external AAA battery pack the provides 10 hours of music and when attached looks like it was built as one and not an attachment. I don't mind the omission of the lcd screen on the player because it really is liberating to not worry about renaming songs. I use this player for the gym over my ipod as it is so much lighter and I put my top 25-30 songs on it and don't worry about changing artists, albums, etc. The sound from the player is amazing. It doesn't have an equalizer and it still sounds better than my 3rd gen 20gb ipod and my old samsung yp-30sh (the key ring replaced this unit). I really was shocked by the sound quality. In terms of looks it is top notch. Everyone comments on how great it looks when they see it. Having said that I bought the KEY005 and not the KEY006 because I would never where one around my neck cause I think it looks stupid to do so. It is also rugged as I have dropped it on the treadmill and there were no chips or dents. In the office if I need to take a file home I just delete a track from the player and drag and drop the document. The only minus is there is no ability to scan through songs. I don't mind this anymore as I just turn on the player and forget about it. The only item I replaced was the headphones. Here is a link of the ones I got with a short cord and work perfectly for me: ..... In summary, I have owned this player for 3 weeks and this is the perfect player for the gym, office and short commutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!
i got this mp3 player for my birthday and it rocks! i love it so much. and how cheap! i got it on sale! it doesnt skip ever or there is nothing ever rong with it. the only problem is that i dont like how there is no screen and all the controls are on the neck strap. but for the person that sayd it was really bad. its not. if its not playing, are you holding the play button down for 2 seconds? is it charged all the way? if your looking for a really good mp3 player at a really good price i recommend this one! trust me!

4-0 out of 5 stars cool gadget
I love the MP3 key. I gave it 4 stars because i had to fork out an additional $15 at best buy for a car adapter. I would also like a fast forward/reverse feature, but I knew there was not one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aways good to go!
I have been using this unit for about two years now. I had the neck strap go on me after I accidently pulled on it while carrying it. Philips replaced it within a few days! The first thing that you need to know is that it is not a PDA or a Juke box. There is not display or fancy EQ features etc. It is however, a great unit for those who wish to keep a low profile while listening to MP3's or WMA's. The sound quality is excellent. This can be improved upon by using a higher grade headphone then the pair supplied with the unit. I use full over ear style when bike riding in the fall. As far as usage, it wins over other units hands down. By simply touching the right spot on my shirt, the unit allows me to control track selection, volume or start/stop features. I often wear it while shopping. I can set volume levels so that I am jamming, and still able to talk with store assistants. If you need alot of bells and whistles, skip this player. If you want portability, a very cool design, and ease of use, this is the game right here. Pro: light weight, easy to wear under clothing. Neck strap provides good control features. Easy to download from PC Cons: no expandability, but new units have 256 meg capacity. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good product
I just bought the Philips Expanium 211. Philips is a specialist of CD technology, since this firm contrived the CD with Sony. But it is not bad for MP3 too.
The sound quality of the expanium 211 is good (as good as it can be for a product of that value, with small headphones ). It plays the music rapidly, just a few seconds after you introduce a CD in the box, whether it is MP3 or classic CD. You can navigate easily in the MP3 files even though there is no indication about the titles (just numbers).
The most surprising is that you can put in the Expanium CD with MP3 and other files format (such as .avi), the Philips expanium is capable of playing the MP3 files anyway.
Good value for money ! ... Read more

The AZ2055 includes a digital AM/FM stereo tuner, too, boasting 30-station memory presets and auto station scanning. 2-0 out of 5 stars really good for a while......
THis player worked great at first. it had double bass boost, programable tracks, shuffle, and repeat. it also won't skip the only down things were the volume i could barely hear it on loud buses and stuff and the earphones. i listened to it everyday but then it happend. it started to play out of only the right side of any headphones i put in it so i had to switch it to mono to hear out of each. now i miss any music that comes out of only left side of the headphones. then it wouldn't open so each time i wanted to switch cds i had to pry it open. also the blue on it gets finger prints pretty easily. that all happend like a year after i got it. i suggest going with sony but if your not going to use it that much go ahead and buy it

4-0 out of 5 stars This is what you need
This product right here is amazing the sound and the price. The only bad things about it ill come right out and say it. There's no light on it so you can't see the track number or time in night rides in your car. And the buttons are on this shiny piece of glass or something and when you touch the glass (thats every time you touch a button) you smudge it and it gets really annoying. But the good things are sound, headphones are good, and the price is good. And for the price your paying for the style is awesome you can really impress your friends. My first one got stolen :( but im still getting another one of these.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great little companion
I bought my Philips CD player (AZ-9143) at Target. It is a bit cheaper there. I am very happy with my purchase. It plays CD-Rs, CD-RWs and regular CDs. Most portables won't play CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Sony is one of them. I guess Sony doesn't want to kill MiniDisc by selling CD-R/RW gear. This machine will give you hours of joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow: I love this player
I hadn't purchased a portable CD player in a long time. I am amazed at how far they've come in the last five years. This player is SO small and light. It's only slightly larger than the discs that play inside it. Also, it seems no matter what you do to it it won't skip. It has 40 seconds of antiskip, which makes me think you can go as far as jog with it. Oh my gosh, I can't say enough about this player. If you need one, get this one! You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Portable CD Player
I just bought this recently and I am very happy with it. The 40 seconds of ESP is great and the resume play is also great. It came with good headphones, but the volume is not that high. ESP3 is better than any other ESP because it prevents skips even more and is powersaving, the more ESP is on , the more battery life you get. Its ultra slim and can fit in my pocket, its also very light. Compared to the RCA 2365 this is much lighter. This is a great buy. Buy it today! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good buy.
I bought this CD player and I have been pleased with it. It is nearly impossible to make the thing skip. The only problem was with the quality of the headphones included. They produce a less than quality sound and are bulky. I found it in my best interest to purchase a set of Sony headphones. The battery life is more than standard. I think I read about some feature that will charge rechargeable batteries if the ac adapter is in use a bonus. Overall I recommend the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Beauty
I originally bought the Sony D-EJ611 cd player. It was a nice machine, but I ended up returning because of a dispute that I had with the store. This unit compares favorably with Sony's player. The sound is actually really good. Sony's only sounded good with the bass boost on, but this one sounds good even during the normal mode. The bass is a bit weaker than Sony's unit, but the overall sound is better. Unlike previous reviews, I found that the volume actually isn't that soft. The output doesn't seem to be as strong as some other units, but only those people who have been deafened by years of listening to booming car systems would complain. I have to concur that the headphones, although durable, should be replaced. First, they are a bit uncomfortable because they don't fit the contour of the head perfectly. Second, the bass on the headphones is nice, but the overall sound is a bit muddled. I listened to the unit with $10 sony earbuds, and the sound was crystal clear but was too lacking in bass so I use the unit with a pair of translucent green Koss i40 headphones. The player sounds great with these. Overall, I'm very pleased with the unit. It holds its own with more expensively priced cd players. Some minor complaints:The top flips open very fast when you slide the latch. I'm a little worried that the hinges will wear out over time. 20 hours is okay, but other units have more battery life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for about 6 months
I loved this thing when I got it and used it every day during my train commute to and from work. It worked fantastic ... the sound was awesome and it was more than loud enough with the sony headphones I bought for it. I recommend buying aftermarket headphones since the headphones that come with it are big and [crazy] looking and don't sound too great. Then all of a sudden one day the headphone jack (where you plug the headphones in) just stopped working. For a while if I twisted the little plug the right way it would work, but then it just stopped working alltogether. I tried three other pairs of headphones including the ones it came with, and none of them worked. Hopefully mine was an isolated case, but I don't think I would ever buy this again.

2-0 out of 5 stars SCRATCHES your CDs
This player has excellent bass and sound quality, won't skip and will run on batteries reasonably long; which is a shame because it just might scratch your CDs. After owning it for 6 months, the player started abruptly stopping (and shutting down) in the middle of tracks. The lens also began to make circular scratches on the CDs it played - very irritating indeed (this is usually the sign of a very cheaply make CD player). I never rocked it around or dropped it, or did anything that would cause this - it just started happening on its own. Now I have to replace it AND one of the music CDs that got quite a bit of playtime, and you can bet I'll not go with Philips again.

5-0 out of 5 stars CD girl

3-0 out of 5 stars good pocket radio, but some flaws
For the price, this is a good pocket radio with decent sound quality, but there are a few setbacks. FM reception is good except in strong areas where it's better at picking up interference from strong stations. This suprised me, because my Philips boom box has teriffic FM reception with no interference. AM reception is ok, but could be better. It's not as sensitive as others, but since I rarely use AM, this isn't a big deal. One disadvantage is the antenna, which pulls straight up and down, and can't be moved from side to side to improve reception. Also, when it is down, the tip of it is almost flush with the top of the radio, making it hard to grasp it to pull it out. The large slide rule dial is easy to read, but it lacks some numbers. There are only 4 on the AM scale and on FM there's no 100. It goes from 96 to 104, making fine tuning in between that range difficult. The radio itself is also a little larger and heavier than many others. There's a flip out carry handle on the back, which I'm not crazy about- I prefer a carry strap instead. Overall it's a good pocket radio providing its minor setbacks don't bother you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great product at a great price! WAIT !
I recently purchased this for my desk and has great reception, where others have failed! You can attach earphones to it and not disturb anyone....sounds fabulous at an even better price.

This radio died after only a few weeks, not worth the purchase!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good FM, Bad AM, Overall slightly disapointing
Why can't anyone make a good solid, old-school, transistor radio anymore? I wanted a nice handheld radio for ball games and listening to at my desk at work. I mostly wanted it for AM, and thus I'm disapointed in the reception and overall sound quality. I have a number of older transistors from the 70's and early 80's, and the quality of the older radios were so much better. The older ones are solid, have rich sounding speakers and have just an overall nice feel. Radios today are cheap, flimsy and have an "echo-ee" kind of sound. I guess I'll just have to stick to the oldies, but goodies. On the positive side, the FM reception seemed to be ok. I also liked the color scheme and the look of the design, just not the feel of the materials. ... so if you just want a little radio for listening to around the house, or wherever, then maybe you'll like it. I like the little "swing arm" handle, that is kinda cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Philips AE150517 Portable Radio

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable!
This cassette player is durable and reliable considering how many times I have dropped it. The gold color is different than any of the others too. My favorite feature is the dynamic bass boost - it has two settings and it really sounds good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD player
I started out with a Classic brand CD player, and it wasn't all that great. So I found this one, and decided to get it. #1 it was good looking, #2 it had a lot of stuff that came with it, and #3 it was Philips brand, which I've heard is a company of great products.

The CD player itself is pretty good. It looks nice. The headphones that come with it are okay, but I only use them occasionally. It's cool how they fold up so they take up less space when you are packing them. The remote is awesome, I always use it when I'm jogging or walking or whatever. It's very handy. The rechargeable batteries are okay as well, but they do take a lot of time to charge and they don't last forever.

The ESP works very well, as does the DBB. The volume on the CD player is great, but with the remote you'd maybe have to turn it up more to be able to hear the same volume as you would without it.

This is an overall great CD player.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD player
I decided to get this CD player because:

1. I needed a new one
2. It looked great
3. It had a lot of cool features like the remote and the headphones
4. Philips is a great brand for electronics.

The CD player does look very cool, nice colors. And it has really great stuff that comes with it. I liked the remote, because it's great to jog or walk with. The headphones are okay. It's really neat how they fold up so they take up less space and have less chance of getting damaged when packed into a suitcase. The rechargeable batteries are ok, but they take a while to charge and they don't last long, only worth a few recharges.

The sound quality is great. However, I noticed that with the remote in use, the volume wasn't as great. The only problem was that it didn't get as loud with the remote as it did without it. But it wasn't that big of a problem.

The ESP works great. I jog with this CD player all the time and I have no problems with skipping. The DBB is pretty cool too, but it doesn't make that huge of a difference in sound quality.

A really great CD player, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound with Extras
The Philips AZ922517 CD player offers a lot for the money. The player provides super clear and crisp sound. And, unlike many other CD players I checked out, this one comes with a power cord and even a set of batteries! The headphones are light weight, cushy, and the head band doesn't squeeze. But it's all in the sound -- really impressive. One slight caveat -- the player seems to be made of light weight plastic so I'm hoping not to drop it or bang it too soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent portable with a lot of nice features
New ESP function works great. Virtually no skipping. Headphones provide excellent sound reproduction versus standard issue phones of other players. I have had no problems with connection to player. Comes with remote unit for added convenince when jogging, etc.. Have observed no loss in volume with use of remote with headphones versus no remote. Comes with rechargable batteries which provide approximately 10HR of listening time after first two full charges (allow batteries to completely discharge prior to recharging, and never store uncharged). Durable well constructed case. Faithfully reproduces music as recorded. No distortion of sound noticed at full volume on head phones or good quality portable speakers. For those without an in car CD player sound quality with cassette adapter excellent. Overall I have been very happy with this product and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sounding and Great Looking CD Player!
I purcgased this CD player because my old one burned out and I have to say that the Phillips is of a much better quality than my previous player. For one thing, and the most important thing, the sound is fantastic! I have never actually heard any of the tinniness that other reviewers have complained of. Only a large full sound that expresses all of the ranges very well. Another great feature of this CD player is the bass boost. With even the first level of boost you feel like you are in a large symphony hall, right next to the stage. ( There is also a second level for even more bass...) The CD player also comes with its own headphones, rechargeable battery, and AC adapter. The headphones are very stylish and comfortable(although they may be too large to use in public) and give a very nice sound to the music. The battery can be easily charged while leaaving the unit plugged in with the adapter for a few hours (I leave it on overnight) this charge can last for about 7 hours but does decrease with use. The player itself has a metal cover and a pretty blue/purple LCD screen. It is also compact enough to fit in mostly anywhere. Overall, I just have to say that this is a great CD player and a great buy at its cheap price. Definitely recommended!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
This product is an excellent value for numerous reasons.

One - the CD player package includes decent headphones, a tape deck interface, a cigarette lighter charger, a removable belt clip and an AC adapter. If you were going to shop for each of these accessories separately - you would spend significantly more overall.

Two - It offers good audio quality with a flexible three stage digital boost for the bass range. I appreciate the option to boost the bass during a hard workout but reduce it for casual listening.

Three - The unit appears more durable than other similiar units I have owned. It is partially metal and has the battery case on the inside of the unit.

4-0 out of 5 stars quality and features are definitely here
Four stars because it's not perfect, but I'd buy it again easily.

I bought this player because of my previous positive experiences with Philips and the fact that it simply had more features for the money than other comparably priced models. When you buy a Sony player, you're paying for a brand name. When it comes to cd players, Philips simply provides more quality. My first player was given to me in sixth grade and I kept it until 10th because it had no problems whatsoever. I was really sad to see it go because it just worked so well, but I knew I had to replace it with another Philips model. Like my first player, this one refuses to skip even without the ESP on. The extra features are there too, including shuffle, resume, hold, and two levels of bass boost. Similarly priced Sony models just don't have those features.

The outside design is a classy amber/purple. It's difficult to describe, but the purple looks amber-ish in the sunlight, and ranges from black to brown (and of course purple) other environments. The only fault of the outward design lies in the cd player's tendency to pop open if brushed along the opening mechanism. If you're careful of that and don't mind resetting the bass each time you start it up, then you should love this player.

1-0 out of 5 stars IM RETURNING IT

4-0 out of 5 stars Although it remembers where you stopped it at...
The resume feature is a must have which is nice on here, that's where the player starts exactly where you left off, but it resets the skip and bass features every time you turn it back on which is annoying if you're driving or working and take brakes etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A player worthy of price....
I purchased this CD Player full and well knowning Philips' good past and I was not disappointed. When combined with Philips folding closed-ear headphones, they provide loud, crystal clear sound with little or no distortion or fuzzing. The battery life holds fairly on par with Sony's, but as far as I'm concerned the Sony players can not even begin to compete with Philips.

Some other things: Battery are placed inside of player. Extremely tough: I've dropped this thing nearly 20 times while at work from about a distance of 3-5 feet and nothing even remotely stops it.

The only real cons are that the LCD screen is slighty hard to read. ... Read more

The Philips AX5312 portable CD player provides a versatile listening experience at a great price. Take it jogging, and the virtually jog-proof Electronic Skip Protection (ESP) gives you 45 seconds skipproof delay. ESP is an intelligent electronic buffer that constantly feed your music into the player’s memory buffer during playback, allowing you to continue to experience uninterrupted sound in the event of knocks, shakes or jolts, accidentally or during sports. When a shock does occur, music is released from the buffer and the player's laser refocuses exactly at the point where the shock occurred, then recommences playing to refill the buffer. You'll also get Digital Dynamic Bass Boost, intelligent maximum bass enhancement that delivers high volumes without sound distortion, and at low volumes without compromising on bottom-end bass frequencies. The total output power to headphones (RMS) is 2 x 5mW (left and right).

The AX5312 plays CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, so all your home-mixed and store-bought discs will work the same. Controls include 30-track programmable, Fast Forward/Backward, Repeat Play, Shuffle, Play, Introscan, Hold, and Resume (which resumes playback from stop). The player has a heat-resistant body and is outfitted with an in-cord, 6-key remote control to make controlling the device extra easy. The primary display shows track, time, DBB, ESP, volume, and battery status. The player measures 5.4 x 0.9 x 5.4 inches, and weighs only 0.4 lbs. You'll get about 40 hours playtime out of the battery, (using 2 x AA alkaline batteries, in power saving mode) or about 16 hours with 2 x AAA alkaline batteries in power saving mode. ... Read more
