Amazon.com Review

With so many free entertainment titles available for Visors it's hard toimagine spending this much money on a collection of simple games. That said, there are a few gems in the bunch that will make the Pocket ExpressEntertainment Pack a welcome addition to your Springboard module collection.

The biggest draw here is Tetris Classic, which plays surprisingly well onthe Visor. The falling shapes are easily positioned and rotated using thebuttons on the bottom of the device, and we were racking up high scores in notime. The other featured game in this pack, Lode Runner: The LegendReturns, is nowhere near as fun. Maneuvering the impossibly tiny man aroundthe screen is tedious, and you have to advance through several levels beforethings get interesting at all.

We were much more impressed with the PocketChess, PokerDice, andblackjack games. PocketChess plays a mean game of chess on the higherdifficulty settings, and the touch screen interface works flawlessly, but beprepared to wait a long time for the computer opponent to make its moves.PokerDice is a surprisingly addictive game of chance and choices, andblackjack is a great way to while away the hours on a boring flight. On top ofall this, Pocket Express threw in a copy of smallWare's Solitaire Free, which includes three solitaire variants including the ever-popular Klondike.

With this much variety, boredom simply isn't an option, but the Springboardformat is a mixed blessing. On the plus side, it offers a convenient way tostore several games that would take up more than 500 KB of memory on your Visorif they were installed via a HotSync--a fact that users of the standard Visorwith its 2 MB of memory will appreciate. On the other hand, the games arepermanently stored on the card, meaning that if new versions come out there's noway to upgrade the version you already have without installing the softwaredirectly on your Visor. If you don't care about upgrading or just want to get agood helping of guaranteed fun for a reasonable price, this is an overall greatcollection of games with universal appeal. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Comes with a great version of Tetris
  • Frees memory on your Visor, since the games stay on the Springboard module
Cons:
  • Lode Runner is a little weak
  • Can't upgrade the installed games with newer versions

2-0 out of 5 stars Tetris was the only good game...
All the games can be found elsewhere on teh internet as shareware, and freely downloadable. The cartridge is read only and therefore you can't "upgrade" the older versions of the games with newer ones.

For the price, I had assumed that the versions of hte programs I was getting were the full blown packages that cna be purchased online. Except for Tetris, I was dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great games! Perfect for travel and leisure time!
Wow, this is a great pack of games. They're easy to use, fun to play and there's plenty of variety. Tetris Classic and Pocket Chess are worth the price alone. They're good for hours of stimulating game play. I'm a business traveler and spend a lot time on airplanes or waiting for airplanes. These games are a great road companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Tetris and a good clutch of other games
I like playing games on my Handspring, but I don't like the space many of them eat up. Enter pocketExpress with a good collection of games that take up *no memory* and are quite fun.

Ok, so they take up a *tiny* bit of memory for saved prefrences and such, but much *much* less than if you were to load all of these games (or even *one* of these games) into your PDA.

The Tetris game is perfect. Solitare has a good interface and is clean. Load Runner brought back memories of my first Mac!

Poker Dice and BlackJack are well done versions of classics games as well.

Installing them is a snap. Pop the module in and there they are. Take the module out, and they are gone. Simple.

This "Game Boy" concept should be exploited by more companies. I have seen a few other game modules, but nice bundles like this are pretty cool. I could easily see an Arcade bundle, a Casino bundule, a Word Games bundle, etc.

A nice little companion to your Visor.

(This is also an *excellent* solution for those who bought a 2mb Visor!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to spend some time
If you are willing to spend the money, this is a great module! The games themselves appear through a select screen when you put the module in, and the launcher and the other programs appear. When you are done, it only saves your settings and last games played, (and in the case of Lode Runner, extra level sets.) So at most, it leaves 10k on your Visor. If you were to buy any one of the programs seperately (except for 2, which are free) it would cost $15. Installing all of these programs instead of buying the Springboard would take at least 750k. Not so good if you have a Graphite 2mb. Visor/Visor solo. Lode Runner is my favorite, and includes a level editor. It's great for those long road trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun
With this eight in one game panel you can enjoy hours of fun in the car or at work. Or even in the comfort of your own home. I love this product because it is so small and so easy to use. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
This module/software does allows you add your own recipes, but they cannot be synchronized to your handheld. That version is read only. So your getting a cookbook for your visor but it's not your favorite recipes. If I had known this I wouldn't have bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a "foodie"
The thing I adore most is the ability to download recipes from web sites without having to retype them. While I'm sure there are computer programs that will do the same thing, the PDA keeps my work and home files matched and is great to have at the store (for example, when there's something on sale and I need a recipe). The computer program prints out recipes or shopping lists which I use to save battery power. The PDA, of course, is helpful for adding items to the list when walking down the street, watching tv, etc. Finally, the module saves the PDA's memory for other programs. Now if only they'd make one for wine records...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Recipes 5 Stars
This is a Great Product! I buy a lot of cookbooks and I've purchased cooking software in the past, but being able to carry this around with you on your Visor is really convenient. This product gives you thousands of recipes, but the best feature by far is the shopping list. When you choose recipes, the exact amount of ingredients required are added to your shopping list automatically. I would highly recommend this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad set of games.
They are not exciting but they will help you pass time when you are waiting at the airport.

The Chess Game is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice little game pack.
For the price you pay you get a few decent games.

Cheaper then buying them individually.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game Pack!
This is a geat pack - the games are fun, and the card is easy to use (just pop it in and start playing - and the cards look very cool, they're so small). I mostly bought it for Tetris and Lode Runner, but PocketChess is fun, too, for the odd times when I feel like having some mental stimulation. It's a great pack to just leave in your Palm and use when you find yourself waiting around with nothing else to do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Pathetic excuse for a database
Suffice it to say, if you are really into using databases effectively, puchase ThinkDB or HanDbase and a memory upgrade. You will be miles ahead of this overpriced, exceptionally poorly designed database. The biggest detriment is that tables can ONLY be designed on the desktop and then downloaded (hotsync'd) to the PDA. You can NOT design on the fly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love this product! It's easy and intuitive to use - I've created lots of personal and business databases. The reference databases provided with the product are quite useful. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're just a pawn sucked up in the world of chess, Pocket Express'sPocketChess Springboard Module for Handspring Visor lets you take your board onthe road, playing against another human or your handheld.

It's a cinch to varythe skills of the computer player--from basic to Kasparov-threatening--just bychanging the amount of time it thinks about each move (it didn't take much of anincrease to have us sweating at the challenge). PocketChess lets you play afriend on a single Visor or via infrared if you've got two of the PocketChessmodules.

Graphics don't often come to mind when describing computer chessgames, but Pocket Express tossed in a wide array of board styles, including woodgrain and marble, that show up crisply on the Visor (and in 16-bit color on theVisor Prism). PocketChess also uses sound effects and timers (which can becustomized or turned off) to add to the gameplay.

PocketChess includes a3,000-game library, letting you search for Bobby Fisher's strategies and tacticsby watching classic games. You can also import other games in the same PGN(portable game notation) format or export yours to the Web. And PocketChessoffers hints for novices just picking up the game. You can also easily take backa move if you've gotten yourself in trouble.

Owners of PocketChess candownload the Desktop Companion, PC software that lets you catalogue your gamesand watch them on a larger screen (although you can't play on your PC with theCompanion). It also handles the import/export of games by synching directly withyour Visor.

PocketChess doesn't ship with a manual, which makes maneuveringits already awkward menus even more of a trial. But being able to take chesswith you in such a small package is the best thing this side of blindfold chess(which PocketChess offers, by the way). --J. Curtis

Pros:

  • Easily tailored difficulty

5-0 out of 5 stars best of bunch
The module program does not crash like other downloaded programs. The biggest plus is the feebie desktop companion that allows storage and entry of pgn files. While this may not be the strongest program available, it has more features. I love being able to load game repertoires, endgame puzzles, and famous games.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a beginner
I recieved my PocketChess as a gift. I'm just learning to play so the hints and ability to undo moves are really helpful... The graphics and color schemes are awesome. I have created a few of my own. I haven't checked out the game databases yet, but I did download the desktop companion so I could review my own games on the larger screen. This is such a great choice for anyone interested in learning the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great New Chess Game
Overall this is a great chess program and definitely worth checking out. The engine is really smart and you can set the difficulty level of the game and hints, play around with color schemes and board styles, and review a whole game database of the Grand Masters. I really like that I can import and export games from PC based games. Its been helpful for improving strategy, you can try out move variations, set-up the board to work on specific problems, and add comments and annotation for each move. It also has a really cool Blindfold chess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the new PocketChess game
This is a great new module.  I already have the Pocket Express Entertainment Pack with Tetris and Lode Runner. Chess in the Entertainment Pack has only 8 levels with this version of PocketChess, you can set the difficulty level so it's great for beginners and experts. You can try out move variations, and undo moves all the way back to the beginning. The color and the graphics are great as well. You can select from different board styles and pieces. If you love chess or have wanted to learn you should get this module. ... Read more
