I've contacted Pioneer about the problem and was told that they know nothing about it. There's always a chance that a firmware upgrade could come at some point, but I would not hold my breath waiting. At this point, I'm ready to just return this thing for a refund and completely write off Pioneer's inexpensive equipment. I'll buy an SACD deck from another company with better quality control. FWIW, the video quality on the 578 is fantastic, as is the sound quality on standard CD's. However, this is all essentially meaningless to me considering that I bought it mainly as a SACD player. Bottom line: if you have any intentions of using this as a SACD player, look elsewhere!
One expert says: "563A DOES NOT convert DSD to PCM, it is a true DSD machine. The 578A "junk" converts DSD to 88.2/24 PCM" I bought a 563A at closeout price. ... Read more |
3. Pioneer DVR-520H-S DVD recorder + 80GB digital video recorder | |

Amazon.com Product Description When you find yourself with a recording you want to watch again, you can keep it on the hard drive or simply burn it to a DVD-R (permanent: can't be erased) or DVD-RW (can be erased or written over many times). The DVR-520H-S features high-speed dubbing in both directions (disc to HDD, HDD to disc). You can burn content to recordable DVD-R and DVD-RW at high speed: a 1-hour program recorded in the Extended Play mode can be transferred to an 8x DVD-R in less than 2 minutes. A feature called Disc Backup lets you make a direct file transfer of a home movie DVD to the unit's hard drive, and from that make perfect copies of your original DVD for all of your family and friends--at blazing 8x speed. The Chase Play feature lets you watch your favorite TV show from the beginning, even while it's still being recorded. The DVR-520-S also features the ability to create full-motion thumbnails with sound and a built-in TV tuner. You can also play a DVD while recording a TV show to the hard drive, or play programs from the hard drive while archiving something to DVD. Additionally, DVD-RW permits non-destructive on-disc editing. The newly created DVD-R can be played back on most other home and portable DVD players, as well as DVD-ROM computer drives. A great feature for home-movie directors is the ability to create a professional-looking menu for home movies, similar to the menu found on DVD movies. Users can choose from nine graphical navigation menus to personalize their disc. The DVR-520H-S also features PureCinema 3:2 Progressive Scan for a film-like presentation when watching movies. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. (You'll need an HD-ready TV to appreciate this feature.) Heading up the connections are DV (digital video) inputs and outputs (1 each, IEEE 1394) for seamless integration with your camcorder and/or your computer. You get a trio of audio/video inputs (composite- and S-video with stereo analog audio) and 2 sets of composite-/S-video outputs with left/right analog-audio outputs. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. An RF coaxial AV input and output help you interface with older TVs, VCRs, and cable boxes. What's in the Box Features |

Amazon.com Review The PD-F1009 excels in other areas, however. In addition to its standard features (play, repeat, program, etc.), the PD-F1009 has a few that are more unusual and, it turns out, perfect for a CD jukebox. The Best Play feature lets you commit any 20 tracks to the PD-F1009's memory. Just hit the Best button (on the remote only) while a track is playing, and the player will automatically store that track in memory. Later, when you hit Best Play, the unit plays back up to 20 tracks in sequence. (Curiously, Best Play plays tracks back in reverse order.) Another cool feature is Previous Scan, which simply plays (likewise in reverse order) the opening 10 seconds of the last 20 discs played. The PD-F1009 also lets you create up to five custom files, or groups, with no limit to the number of CDs in each file. This is a terrific way to file discs by genre or artist. In addition, the PD-F1009 is one of the few players we know of (megachanger or otherwise) that is compatible with both CD-Rs and CD-RWs--most only play CD-Rs. The PD-F1009's CD Text feature scans and displays disc and song titles, but only if a CD is encoded with this information (most new ones are). Finally, the PD-F1009 has an optical digital output for use with outboard digital processors, minidisc, and CD recorders, as well as the capability for CD-recorder synchronization with other Pioneer equipment. Where the PD-F1009 falls short is in its musical presentation. Through the analog outputs, everything sounds a little dull. From an audiophile standpoint, the midrange lacks openness, the top end lacks extension and sparkle, and the bass is sluggish and overly soft. If you have a surround receiver with an optical digital input, we highly recommend listening through the PD-F1009's digital output, which sounds just fine. We like the PD-F1009's features, which Pioneer has executed nicely and at an attractive price. We strongly recommend the PD-F1009 for background music; serious listeners will want to reach for an optical cable to take advantage of the changer's digital output. --Wayne Garcia Pros: Cons: Features Reviews (7)
As an audiophile who used to work in radio, I've amassed quite a collection of CDs, so being able to have a few hundred of them in the player at a time is great. You can also specify groups of CDs by categories; I found this handy this past Christmas when we loaded up our collection of holiday CDs and grouped them. Then, if we felt like listening to holiday music, we'd play that group on "random"; and if we were tired of the holiday cheer, we'd choose another group from which to play songs at random. The machine is easy enough to learn how to use, and the sound quality is fine. The mechanism itself is quieter than the typical 6-CD cartridge-based changes that Pioneer and JVC make (I've never used the Sony 300 disc player), and I've found it quite suitable for playing soft background music at parties we've hosted, even with the constant CD shuffling that random play requires. I've always been happy with the quality of Pioneer's CD-players, my previous one (a 6-changer) offering 8 years of excellent service. For the price, I don't see how you can go wrong with this player. Highly recommended.
The main feature I like which puts this above Sony is the ability to search and store data on CDs not only by Title, but also by Artist. Although it is a huge pain to go through and create all the artist/title information - it's easier to find the CD you want in the end. I create CD Text duplicates of all my CDs and load them into this changer (the originals stay in their cases so they can be taken on trips, etc.). I then have the ability to see every song, artist, and album title. CDText is a Godsend! The only thing bad about this product is the un-ergonomic and un-usable completely black remote control brick. You can solve this problem by using a Universal Remote which I assume most serious audiophiles will want to use anyway. I still give the changer 5 stars because I don't believe the bad remote is that big of a deal for most people. I use the optical digital output and I'm impressed with the sound. The Changer itself is quiet and quick. I purchased a 5 year warranty because I don't trust mechanical devices, but after 18 months I've had not one problem.
The Pioneer changes discs fast , user-friendly remote/jog dial and good sound quality when played through the Digital output. I would definitely recommend the Pioneer PDF1009 for anyone considering a 300 CD Player. ... Read more |

Amazon.com Product Description The PD-F908 includes versatile edit features such as previous-disc scan. Thisfeature gives you quick access to the CDs you have listened to most recently. Itsamples 10 seconds of discs you have listened to, starting with the most recent, and continues on in reverse chronological order. CD-deck synchro simplifies CD-to-tape recording. Simply connect a Pioneer CDplayer and a Pioneer tape deck that both feature CD-deck synchro. The CD playerand the cassette deck will automatically operate in sync: the deck automaticallystops when the CD player searches for the next programmed track to play, andrestarts when it's found. CD-deck synchro makes taping your favorite CDs easierthan ever. The best-selection memory function makes it easy for you to label and listen toyour favorite tracks in your CD collection. Simply press the "best selection"key when listening to the tracks you like to store them for later recall. When searching discs or tracks, you may sometimes find the first few seconds ofa song aren't enough to clearly identify it. That's why the Pioneer PD-F908features a highlight scan. This function plays back sections 60 to 70 secondsinto each track it scans. It also lets you scan in several ways: you can checkeach track on each disc, or the first track on each disc, or just the tracks anddiscs selected for best-selection memory, or tracks and discs defined bycategories under the custom mode function. The Pioneer PD-F908 also features an optical digital output for transmission ofa pure digital bit stream to compatible receivers, and comes with a full-function remote control. Pioneer offers a warranty of a year on parts and labor for the PD-F908. Features Reviews (10)
No complaints about this unit except for some internally placed amber LED lights that flash on and off when the disc is changing. Soon as I can, I'm going to get some black electrical tape and cover those flashies over. Also, I couldn't get the universal Pioneer remote control to control this CD player, so I ended up just using two remotes. Another benefit of having a 100 CD player is you can include some of your CD singles. Myself, I never listened to my CD singles because it was a pain to load one disc up for only a couple songs. But when they are part of a 100 CD mix, suddenly the singles have a real purpose. If you have a bunch of singles, and are concerned you'd fill up the 100 slots too fast, nothing would stop you from burning a bunch of your singles onto one CD (if you have a CD burner in your computer); using random play, you'll hear tracks you haven't heard in a long time.
I have been slowly overhauling my home entertainment system and decided it was time to upgrade my compact disc player. My new A/V receiver doesn't have the capability of connecting via remote to my reliable Technics SL-PC14 5 Disc CD Player that I have been using for 12 years. I was getting tired of having to get up and manually doing everything that a remote does. I was originally going to upgrade with another 5 disc CD player, but I didn't realize how low the prices for the CD jukebox changers were. For the amount of CD's they hold and all of the functions they are capable of I decided this was the direction I wanted to go. I had my eye on a 300 disc changer but heard too many negative reviews about the system. It won't play the first track on CD's, it skips while playing tracks or won't even play CD's at all. CD's have been dropped and fallen into the back of the machine, breaking them, jamming the machine and rendering it unusable until it was taken apart and the broken CD's removed. Although it had a lot of nice features and is a very attractive machine it didn't seem worth the risk to me. My wife and I have over 730 CD's and every single one plays without skipping in our Technics disc player. So buying replacement CD's is not an option. Therefore I went back to the drawing board. I didn't want the issues or complications that a jukebox CD changer had the potential to have. I would rather have a machine with no frills that is dependable than have one that is always giving me problems and ending up not being worth the hassle, and wishing that I had never bought it. So the plan was to just go with another 5 disc changer. After browsing through a store one day looking at the CD players I happened across the Pioneer PD-F908. Once again my curiosity was peaked. The thought of having so many CD's instantly at my disposal wanted me to give this type of CD changer another look. Pioneer has a solid reputation. It was only 20 dollars more than the 5 disc player I was planning on buying. Plus it holds 101 CD's giving me access to 96 more at my fingertips. I went home and did some research on this unit and after a few days of deliberation I decided I would give it a try. This is the first Pioneer product I have ever bought and it will not be the last. For the price this is a wonderful machine. When I got it home and was taking it out of the box I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. It is easy to set up, easy to use, and fast, changes disc's in 10 seconds. It is also shorter than the larger capacity jukeboxes, which makes it easier to store in smaller entertainment centers. The PD-F908 has played every single CD I have put into it without fail. Every function has worked flawlessly. The remote is small and simple. Here are a few of it's features: CD-DECK SYNCHRO jack Having over 730 CD's a 300 or 400 disc player wouldn't hold them all anyway. I am glad I went for with the PD-F908 instead of the others with larger capacity. I have not regretted purchasing this product for a second. If you are looking for a reliable, inexpensive CD jukebox changer you have found it.
Throwaway items are no longer acceptable in our current business or consumer environments. Therefore, this one gets a wholehearted "thumbs down."

Amazon.com Review Should your collectionreally bulk out, it's even possible to double the system's capacity by linkingtwo DV-F727s. All the while, you'll still maintain easy control over the wholekit 'n caboodle via a single, fully-featured and user-friendly remote control(supplied), or using an optional, plug-in PS/2 style computer keyboard ormouse. One of the most elaborately featured DVD players we've everencountered, the DV-F727 also takes care of the basics quite well--deliveringpristine pictures and sound with component-video (interlace), S-Video, andcomposite-video outputs. Sound-wise, its optical and coaxial digital-audiooutputs definitely deliver the Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM stereo (up to 96 kHz,24-bit) soundtracks. The player's Burr-Brown audio digital-to-analog converterand conventional analog jacks also proved quite fine. Handy jog-shuttle dialson both the front panel and the remote make it a pleasure to manipulate themultispeed forward and reverse trick-play options. Customizable settings letyou vary picture parameters to taste or adjust the audio dynamic range for latenight listening--so that soft sounds such as dialogue can be heard more clearlywithout making loud sounds even louder. Given its immense disc storagecapacity, this changer is remarkably compact--measuring about 16.5 inches wide,17 inches deep, and 7.75 high. The holding slots are accessible, one at atime, behind a motorized opening/closing Plexiglas "hood." Of course, there'salso the option to quickly install and then remove a single disc--via thededicated 301st slot--with its operation complemented by special "single loader"access and play keys. Entering menu text and numerical data about stockpiledtitles is reasonably easy. Information can be added using the onscreen softkeyboard in tandem with the cursor control joystick on the remote, or with theselection dial on the front panel. To speed up the process, there's also theoption of plugging in and entering text on a conventional PS/2 computerkeyboard. Making life easier still, some music CDs now contain andautomatically stream their own album and song title info (CD Text), which thischanger will conveniently read, display, and automatically integrate into itsprogram menu memory. If implemented, DVD text information is also downloadable.(A front-panel display lights up to indicate the presence of such text on adisc.) A couple of bummers: you must abbreviate text entries when a title orartist's name exceeds 12 characters, the max this changer's memory will storeand display. CD Text titles longer than 12 characters, while not memorized, willscroll across the LCD screen. Also take note: when a disc is playing, you can'tenter data, or add or remove other discs. Once program data is entered intothe megachanger's memory, titles can be sorted and accessed by format (DVD orCD), disc title (alphabetically), or disc number. Another option: you cancreate and name 20 custom files (10 DVD/Video CD and 10 CD) for automaticplayback. However, there's still no avoiding the mandatory setup menus andunskippable FBI Warning before DVD play commences. All in all, the DV-F727represents a remarkable piece of engineering and entertainment prowess from thefolks at Pioneer. Pros: Features Reviews (12)

The only problem with this changer, and most people So I would keep that in mind before purchasing this dvd
Specifically, complex textures look as if they have not been antialiased. They shimmer and stutter as they scroll past. Since this is something that will irk me every time I use the device, regrettably I'll be returning it and getting something else. ... Read more |
