1-0 out of 5 stars Problems,Problems Problems!!
The concept is great and so is the price. This card and its software are full of problems! If you are enjoy computer crashes and rebooting every 15 minutes than buy, otherwise stay away. After several weeks trying to find the problem (thinking it was my computer) I managed to find on the web site that this card does not work well with Compaq Presarios and IBM Abtivas. This could not be any more correct. If you have one of these computers do not waste your money!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy for those wishing to start and learn video
This card is great value for the price, just make sure you meet the manufacturer's specifications (pinnaclesys.com). The software is very intuitive/user friendly and extremely easy to use. The only drawback to this card is that it uses and is limited to the proprietary software made by Pinnacle for the editing, and once you become proficient (and you will) at editing with this system, you will want to upgrade to other software and then will run into snags. The output quality is excellent - I have actually produced instructional tapes which I then sold - especially when you consider the cost of the card.

2-0 out of 5 stars not worth the effort for video editing
I bought this card initially to use as a capture device in conjunction with an older camcorder. I was attracted by the video editing capability as a secondary use, thinking it might be fun. It's true that it is buggy, but if you go to the Pinnacle website, the support area has lots of info on how to work around them. Check it out before you buy! And after you've spent hours getting it to work right, the resulting edited video is never as good quality-wise as the original analog recording. Could be fun for the patient, determined hobbyist with a tight budget, though. If you are serious about video, spend the extra bucks on high end video editing software, or wait for writable DVD cameras. Additionally, the card does not support CUseeMe, only Netmeeting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!
It looks great & has potential but.....I wasted way too much time trying to work the bugs out!

Audio & Video was always out of sync.....

Too many crashes!

If you want frustration....buy this!

4-0 out of 5 stars This board is wonderful!
If Jesus had a capture card, it would surely be this one. Maybe not...but still...it's just a wonderful card ($$ and NOT too expensive! $$). It's just great. Although...I've read many complaints about the software having loads of bugs and such...and about how sometimes the audio goes out of sync w/ the video...but I haven't had those problems. I'm completely satisfied w/ the DC10plus. So yeah. If you really would like a good quality capture card at a looooow price ("cheap" compared to those thousand dollar ones) then go out and get yourself a DC10plus. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amatuer authoring
The program won't do motion menus, and it tells you when you start up that it wants to run with only a few colors instead of normal resolution so you know that it isn't very advanced. Then I have tried several different hardware configurations and I am using XP with several different codec settings and the dumb program keeps crashing, I'm not really into updating into the beta versions of software but I think you going to have to in order to get your moneys worth out of this program. I have gotten it to work with really common compression settings like Microsft DV AVI but nothing else though and really small movies, not large ones. I'd say it's more like $10 rather than $500.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashiest program I've ever used!
The features supposedly supported by this program sound great, but the program crashes or errors out every time. A major disappointment for a piece of software this expensive.

Bottom line: There isn't any decent DVD authoring software yet that doesn't cost thousands of dollars. If you want to burn decent DVDs right now, use a Mac!

4-0 out of 5 stars a great product

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but missing some features
I have had this for a couple years now.

PROS
easy to install
great interface
great picture

CONS
does not have a TV out so you can use your TV as a montior
You can set a time to record (so you can use your pc like a tivo
the screen captures and video captures even with the settings at the highest possible could be a little better

In conclusion i thought this would be the coolest thing but i really don't use it that much, its nice for watching tv at your pc when there is not one around and has a nice channel surfing option that gives you a thumbnail of each channel, but if you want to capture a picture or video it will have to be pretty small if you want a good resolution. Even for the web you need small pictures like 320 x 320

5-0 out of 5 stars A great bang for the buck
In my home I am the only "Techno-juckie". I was recently looking to add a new toy to my PC and came across the PCTV Pro card at a ridiculously low, "today only" sale in a local superstore. I was suspicious at the low price, but Pinnacle's reputation won me over. The card's design forced my to have to "unseat" my motherboard to clear the FM and TV inputs. Once installed it setup as easy as pie. I ran the "tests" to see if it was compatible with my existing grpahics card (Diamond Stealth III 540). My card failed the Direct Draw Overlay test, but I'm stubborn and insisted on trying it anyway. It worked flawlessly, (even at full screen 800 x 600 32bit resolution). I put a signal splitter on my cable line and was able to "autoprogram" the card so that I was able to watch a different cable program from the one showing on my TV. I also tested it with my camcorder (without any problems).I am looking foward to trying out the video conferenceing capabilities. Also, the FM Tuner works really well, even with a "make-shift" antenna. I highly recommend this product even though it's diagnostic program could use a treak, and the inputs re-positionied for easier installation. To quote my 15 yr old daughter "That is the coolest thing I've ever seen on a computer"

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, Excellent and almost reliable.
If your the home video maker and want a bit better video editing then 2 VCR's and the play and record buttons. Then card is great for that! Even when your on a very low budget movie, this card is very cheap and also a TV & radio on your computer. The only set back was no video output. So unless you have a cd-burner, theres not much way to get your home videos out of the computer and onto tape. Never the less a great card for so cheap. I my card from an order store for about ... Australian, When I found out about Amazon selling this card for lots cheaper and the normal PCTV card for even cheaper. I was kicking myself. I might get my friend the same card for him. It is a really good card and for so cheap as well. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars EditionDV offers solid value for the home enthusiast
I've been using EditionDV for about a month now and just finished my first DV->DVD project with it. Overall the experience has been very positive, with minial hiccups and no lost work or time due to the software.

Editing: My project involved merging 4 different camera shots of the same event into the finished product. Edition allowed aligning the clips from the different camera's very easily on the timeline. It allows allows you to protect the clips that you don't want to be messed with on the timeline. It's also got a good set of transition and effects which allows you to do a very professional job. Once I got the hang of the software using the Training CD (highly recommended), then it was easy to use. Pros: Very stable, creates great quality output on DVD. Cons: Documentation sucks, no tutorials or anything of the like and you don't find books on EditionDV in the stores like you do of Premiere. Pinnacle should really package the Training CD as part of the package.

Commotion: Pinnacle packages a great package which costs about [$$$] by itself for free. This is a great piece of software which allows you to develop composites. I used it extensively for creating professional looking titles and other intro clips. Pros: Great package with a lot of built in filters; Cons: Documentation (no docs in the box!!!)

Authoring & Burning: Impression Pro is another solid package which allows you do motion menus and overall has created DVD images which have been very compatible with set top players.

Overall a solid package for the serious hobbyist who wants to spend time and create professional looking DVD's. I was comparing it to Premiere, but Commotion and Impression for free was what made the choice an easy one. But Pinnacle really needs to beef up the documentation. Pinnacle support however has been excellent with their online support. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle Studio 8
I won't say Studio 8 is bug-free but I have been working with this software since it was Studio DV (with no version number) and it has always given me results. I have produced AVI files 10GB long composed of tens of transitions and short clips (5 seconds) together with long ones. Of course I had experienced shortcomings now and then. I have seen my PC hang up while in Studio. If I work too fast adding transitions left and right sometimes Studio stops in its track and hangs. So now I pace myself and let the software breath between commands. By waiting 5-6 seconds after placing a transition and before doing anything else I have eliminated these hangups. And to avoid the pain of losing an hour worth of work I save my work often. Overall I find Studio a very easy to use and feature-rich application. Although I also own Adobe Premiere I use Studio for my day-to-day simple editing and composing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be good if it worked!
My review is for the full version 9, not the upgrade, but they should be the same. I had so many problems with version 8, but I made the mistake of hoping version 9 would be better. WRONG.
The good: Pinnacle Studio is packed with features and is quite easy to use.
The bad: It's JUNK. Full of bugs even with the latest updates. It's slow too. STAY AWAY from this product!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away - Save Your Money $$$$
I had Studio 8 and enjoyed it. I moved to studio 9 and hate it. There are lots of bugs too many to mentions. There Quality Assurance and marketing department has done a horrible product release that is full of bugs!!!!

My suggestion is stick with studio 8 if you have it. Otherwise go buy another competitor product.

Good Luck

1-0 out of 5 stars Purchase of Studio 9 - NO WAY
About six months ago, I purchased Studio 8 with a bonus of a FX add-on disk. The bonus disk was not readable. After hours of emails back and forth and several promises to replace that disk, I still haven't received satisfaction. I even got hold of a real person once who promised to send a replacement but like all previous promises, this one wasn't kept.

If you want to buy dissatisfaction, Studio 9 is the product for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good - flexible package (after patches installed)
I've recently upgraded from Studio 8 to version 9 and have been pretty pleased. As yet, I've only had one lockup. (while searching the help.) My projects have been a mix of analog capture in AVI and MPEG2 files, as well as DV. These have had a number of effects in some cases, some clips were shortened, and I've played with the DVD menu structure. (basic stuff) The output from a burned DVD appears pretty good for the price. However, I haven't tackled any large projects yet. With Studio 8 I've captured 2 hour movies from TiVo, created menus/chapters, then burned them to DVD. I mention this because there would ocassionally be a A/V sync problem after some scene transistions. The 16:9 support is nice, but frame conversions are weak. Conversion of 4:3 to widescreen simply squashes the frame - distorting everything. Some other options like screen cropping would be nice, or allowing mixed formats in the same project. If you only use one format, then it's not an issue.

Other than those points, my complaint would be the inclusion of locked-out features. I'd rather not install something I can't/won't use. Like SPAM on my PC I cannot control. Oh, and the S/N included wasn't valid - oops! Service emailed me another in about 12 hours.

In general, check that your PC can handle the software, and is stable - it appears to demand more than Studio 8. I'd suggest browsing the manufacture discussion forums (Pinnacle) to see what the common issues are, and how to resolve them. Finally, all software has bugs - so if you grab the first copy - expect many patches (or simply wait a few months.) ps. the latest patch was ~50Mb ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, and yes Virginia, it works with Athlon!
I have used this product now for almost a year and have been very happy with it. I tried other products - a really cruddy program from Dlink whose card locked up my old Pentium 233, Video Studio from Ulead(worked well but interface too jazzy and strange), and also Adobe's video editor (way too complicated for my needs).

I was a little hesitant about installing it on my Athlon 900 system but after installing and getting my drivers up to snuff it worked great.

As stated, you must have installed the latest drivers for your video and sound card and THEN installed DirectX latest version (8.0 for the moment). The software and card will work flawlessly. You should also have a large, fast hard drive for your video files in addition to the hard drive that your operating system is on (not just a partition on the same drive). This will keep your video flowing smoothly. I also recommend at least a Duron or Celeron 700 MHZ cpu, and be sure no other programs or Anti-Virus software is running at the same time. Video editing is extremely processor and drive intensive and anything else running will give you choppy video output.

I liked Studio DV because it is logical yet flexible. I could add titles, background sound, transitions, and narration, as well as rearrange and crop the scenes with the click of a button. It will output movies into many formats, including MPG, AVI, Real Video format, or back to the Mini DV Camcorder. I also liked the program because it controlled the recording on my Mini DV camcorder, as mine lacks the record button (older Panasonic, but takes great video in good light and has terrific sound)

The only feature that I would like to have seen added, which VideoStudio has, is the ability to open and edit MPG files.

Overall, I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to try video editing. It is simple to use but gives the flexibility to create some really cool videos. And because it is broadcast quality, a businessperson could easily make their own commercial and save themselves lots of $$$.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good product for the price but watch out for some deficiency
I got this product and use it for more than a month now. I follow the instruction in the manual for installation and software setup to the letter. It works right after. There are some defeciencies users should be aware about: 1) video capture at full quality will stop every 18min or so. The limit is due to Windows but this software should be able to capture long video into multiple AVI files. It does not do that. that's bad, so you have to go back and hit capture every 20mins. 2) capture in preview quality does not have this problem BUT, your system should be powerful for the task because of the compression I guess. Mine is only 266Mhz, so I am forced to capture at full quality. 3) output to AVI files (full quality) again stops every 18mins or so. 4) output to MPEG file produces bad quality MPEG video. These shortcomings do not really affect the quality or limit the lenght of the video output back to tape. But they are very annoying. 5) Forget about calling tech support, I can never reach them. E-mail is OK though. I learned to overcome these shortcoming different ways. Just wonder why Pinnacle do not try to solve them with software upgrades. Anyway, I still recommend this product for Digital Camcorder owners who want to create/edit home videos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Making Quality Home movies
I Purchased this mainly to make home movies and cut a CD. The software that comes with this is very good. Compared to any movie making software this helps to make movie using time line, story board. The good piece was editing. The Editing of movie by dividing it into multiple pieces was good. the software also come with a provision to make the movie in VCD, SVCD and DVD formats. I recommend this for naive users like me to make quality movies/

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the easiest-to-use package out there
This is by far the easiest-to-use, most intuitive, best bang-for-the-buck video editing package out there.

Some people will tell you that other programs have more features, more flexibility, render faster and are even more stable. These people are all CORRECT. However, that doesn't make those other packages better for the amateur. They should tell you that 100% of the features needed for the typical video project ARE included in Pinnacle Studio. They should tell you that Pinnacle Studio is so easy to use that you don't even need a manual, while those other programs have such archaic commands and buried menus they'll take months to figure out. They should tell you that professional video editors who have the more expensive programs often use Pinnacle Studio for all of their basic editing and then switch to the expensive ones only to do complicated special effects and rendering. Why? Because Pinnacle Studio is that much easier to use.

So why do some other packages cost hundreds more? Because they allow you to create your own complicated layered video and audio effects, edit on multiple monitors, and render finished video effects in real time, which can be 10 times faster than Studio. If you are a professional who always has 5 projects going and edits video all day every day, those things are worth the extra price.

A couple of notes:

The 18 minute limit that another reviewer refers to is an old WINDOWS file size limit, applicable to any video program. If you are running Windows XP, this limit no longer exists.

Finally, forget what the Apple commercials tell you. Video editing and rendering is not so simple that a kindergartner can do it. It's the most resource-intensive thing you can ask your PC to do. If you aren't comfortable enough with a PC to be able to close competing applications and monitor how much hard drive space you have available, then you should not try video editing, even with a simple program like Pinnacle Studio. If those things don't intimidate you, then take the plunge with this product. You'll have a blast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm with sony minidv trv27
Had no problems installing and then editing movies with trv-27. Also burning VCDs is quick. The software they ship helps you cut a home movie real fast. I would recommed this. I gave it 4 stars since I expected the software to have some more features. ... Read more
