4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Editing - Powerful System Required
I have a little experence using video editing programs, so I was able to get this up and running fairly quickly. Here are my opinions:

Pros:
Easy to install - Had it installed, updated, configured, and editing in under an hour.

Easy to use - Had my first 1 hour video (with 13 chapters), captured, edited, rendered, and burned to DVD in under 4 hours (with breaks).

Great results - My projects look very professional and "clean".

Cons:
Very weak documentation - I had some experence with this type of software, otherwise my review would have been like some of the others posted here :-(

Very resource intensive - I had tried to use this software earlier on my old PC (P3 550MHz, 128M RAM, 12G HD) and it crashed or failed almost every time. My system (Dell XPS P4 3.2 GHz, 1G RAM, 240G RAID 0 HD) has no problem handling this software.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK at video editing, awful for DVD burning
I was OK with Studio 8 for the first few months I had it, I made simple VCDs and DVDs of my friends, it was amusing.

Then I tried to make some more complicated things, with multi-level menus, and a number of different file types, and fill up the whole DVD. I ended up with about 5 coasters. The pinnacle tech support was no help at all.

Then I found TMPG DVD Author, used to make DVD files which are then burned from within the program or burned with Nero. TMPG has not produced any coasters yet. Now I do all my editing/transitions with Studio 8, render it, and use TMPG to actually make the DVD.

So all in all, I had to spend an extra $90 for a REAL dvd authoring progam to go along with Studio 8.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for moving your videotape to DVD
This product and the bundled Pinnacle 8 Studio software delivered spotty performance. It generally ptured the video from tape OK, but the interface (and especially the capture format options) was very non-intuitive. The DVD renedering was slow, and results were hit and miss: some were OK, some failed outright and some were rendered with annoying frequent color shifts (about every 3 seconds throughout the entire DVD). This all took place on a new, fast machine with plenty of RAM and disk space. I'm pretty comfortable with new apps, but the Studio 8 is very hard to figure out. Consider the PYRO A/V link from ADS instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars horror movies???
as a performance artist interested in being able to create my own multi-media projects i enthusiastically bought this rubbish software. the installation seemed fine, but very soon after it crashed so often that i got to where i was saving my project after every change just so i wouldn't lose my work. the texts and fonts don't work, it jumps around trying to guess your intentions (almost as badly as microsoft word's auto-correct), it only burns to dvd about 1 time in 10, and the rendering process can exceed 12 hours for only 25 minutes of material. expect to be on hold from 30-60 minutes for technical support (not a toll-free number), and don't expect the menu options to be saved properly. the one time it created a dvd properly it was absolutely beautiful; however, i worked much too hard to get so little out of the program. i also had to rebuild my entire system FOUR times after the computer stopped booting (note: i have a 2.6 ghz processor, 512 meg ram, and 120 gig, with windows xp media edition -- don't try to blame these problems on my system!)... i'm going to try the sony product: it averages about 4 stars from other users and costs the same or less.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING BUT... NOT ADOBE
THIS IS AN AMAZING PRODUCT FOR THIS PRICE. STUDIO 8 HAS A NICE LOOK, IT'S EASY TO USE AND IT HAS A LOT OF COOL EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AND THE EXPERIENCE, BUY THE ADOBE PREMIERE 6.0 BUT AS FOR THIS PRODUCT 5 OUT OF 5 STARS! EXCELLENT!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This all-in-one solution includes not just a versatile software-editing program but a genuine triple-port FireWire card as well. Pinnacle Studio has everything you need to turn analog video footage into digital cinematic jewels. Essential for editing and refining home movies on your computer, the FireWire card transfers video from a camcorder or VCR to a PC at acceptable speeds. From there, use the drag-and-drop interface to professionally edit your home videos.

To take advantage of Pinnacle Studio's super-fast FireWire transfers, you'll need to ensure your video source (camcorder or VCR) is fitted with a DV port. If it is, you're in business. Begin by installing the FireWire DV capture card inside your PC, much as you would a new video or sound card. Once the hardware is in place, install the Pinnacle Studio software and connect your video source via the enclosed FireWire-to-DV cable.

Although it may take days and perhaps weeks to become truly proficient--as exemplified by the program's 300-page manual--Pinnacle Studio should have you tweaking your footage within minutes. Its intuitive and extremely polished interface, generous Help section, slick tutorial, and massive online FAQ section are superb rookie aids. Unfortunately, you'll be far better off asking specific questions via e-mail than through the company's telephone support lines, where hold times can be very long indeed.

Pinnacle Studio has been designed to look both elegant and visually appealing. It is divided into three main elements--Capture, Edit, and Make Movie. To upload a video, merely click the Start Capture command in the Capture interface. Control your video device by clicking various buttons on the program's large camcorder icon, and formulate edits on a large filmstrip spread across the bottom of the Edit screen. Pinnacle has smartly hidden secondary functions in pop-up windows to keep the screen uncluttered and easy to navigate.

The program offers several perks not found in other budget editors. When a video is uploaded, it automatically deciphers each new scene and creates a corresponding thumbnail which may then be dragged and dropped to any position on the filmstrip. Screen transitions can be dragged and dropped too, as can titles and sound effects such as music or voice-overs. If you want to deviate from the prefabricated special effects, Pinnacle Studio allows you to modify or create your own from scratch. For pinpoint edits, you'll want to access the Timeline view, wherein you'll see an exacting second-by-second account of every video frame and every special effect you've added. Furthermore, the program helps conserve valuable hard drive space by converting your full DV-quality video to a more economical format for editing purposes, then re-converting it back to DV quality for the final product.

Veteran moviemakers may find some of the enclosed special effects to be rather basic, but anyone new to video editing will undoubtedly have a blast turning their homegrown movies into dynamic works of art, saving them in any number of video formats, and perhaps even sharing them at the Pinnacle Web site. At less than double the price of many standalone FireWire cards, Pinnacle Studio is a multifaceted yet user-friendly solution that makes movie production both fun and rewarding. --Gordon Goble ... 1-0 out of 5 stars works great....sometimes....
Initially I believed this worked reasonably well. That is if you put up with the capture freezing periodically. However, after owning it for two months (and therefore stuck with it), I find that it will capture off my DVD player perfectly, but it will not capture at all from my VCR. There simply is no video in the preview box and it does not capture. Pinnacle's "support" is poor. Forget speaking to a person. I am currently waiting to hear a response from email, however I suspect that it won't be helpful. If it was not for the expense I would simply throw it away. It is beginning to take up so much time. All for wanting to transfer tapes to DVD. I did end up buying a Panasonic DVD recorder with a hard drive for that purpose. It works well, the only draw back being the inability to edit beyond creating scences.( which is great to edit out commercials)

1-0 out of 5 stars capture NIGHTMARE
Everytime my source video has a scene change the capture hardware hangs, producing a stuttering image of the last frame sucessfully captured. The MovieBox manual says that during video "dropouts" the MovieBox "will wait for an interference free signal" and that this "can take a few momements" to acquire the new signal. It suggests that the unit be reset or power cycled if it does not properly reacquire the signal after it has stabilized. Since this issue occurs at every scene change you will need to babysit your capture so you can reset your hardware and restart the capture each time you turned off your camcorder during the original recording. The included software is good, but the hardware is fatally flawed - and the manufacturer is trying to sell it anyhow!

1-0 out of 5 stars PINNACLE S MOVIEBOX DV CAPTURE ( 210100250 )
I bought this product to copy old vhs movies and copy my analog camcorder hi 8mm tapes to mpe(dvd) format. Like the other review says, the hardware is a piece of junk and in my opinion should have never been allowed to be sold to the public. It still amazes me how companies get away with this and still stay in business. The software seem ok Pinnacle Studio 8. I have a Dell 8300 running xp pro with sp1 installed, 512 memmory and 200mb harddisk, ati 9800 video card, siig 1394 firewire card. I have a high end sony hi 8mm camcorder. The bottom line is that when you capture video and you have a scene transitions(ex. tape a scene of my kids one day and then next day I tape a nother scene - normal use), it HANGS up(the video goes crazy and it starts making all these popping sounds). My first scene was 5 minutes and then it hung up. I could never get it to capture more than 5 minutes. I tried for hours to make it work and I have 20 years experience as a computer developer. I then started researching this product and found no good reviews, they were all terrible. The moviebox usb is going to have the same problem because of the mpeg encoder chipset in the box, it just does not work. If you want a great production, then the anwser is the Canopus ADVC100(approx $250.00 street price). I bought it the other day and have burned 4 hours of old vhs and hi 8mm movies to the .avi format. You can buy other Canopus products that do mpeg hardware encoding with variable bitrate, but they are in the $500 range. If you want to edit movies, you should be capturing the video to .avi(need a lot of disk space), editing it, and then converting it to mpeg-2(dvd) fromat. Editing in MGEP format does not work well. The Canopus worked flawlessly with hunderds of scene transitions. I could not find one bad review on the Canopus product. It is plug and play. I have used Microsoft Movie Maker 2 and Pinnacle Studio 8 to capture the video. Hope this review was helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This product is junk.
This product is junk and so is the bundled software! I purchased the Moviebox in order to convert old VHS, VHS-C and Video8 to DV. When I hooked it up to my Computer (Windows XP) I couldn't capture more than 5 minutes (max.) of footage before something went awry (video would hang on a single corrupted frame, audio would cut in and out and or reverberate very annoyingly). Pinnacle tech support gave a whole list of things to try which didn't help.

Next I attempted to use the box in standalone mode (not using a computer at all) going from a Canon Video8 camcorder through the Moviebox and out to a Sony VX1000 DV camcorder. I am able to capture but it requires constant (and I mean constant) "baby sitting" because it hiccups on average about every 10 minutes. There is no way to just set it up and leave it run while you go about other business.

Bottom line is don't waste your time or money on this product! I'm returning mine right away. ... Read more
