1-0 out of 5 stars Oops! I got hoodwinked!
I shudda read the reviews before I bought this POS. After spending hours trying to get the card to function properly I finally realized why Compusa had placed it on sale: they were trying to dump this loser on me by dangling a low price in front of my nose! Well, price isn't everything, obviously; like the man said, lets see how good the return policy is!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terribly disappointed
Unfortunately I fell prey to not researching peer review of this product. I must admit that in the end, I find the product a worthless collection of electronics, worth little more than 'dot.com' cube-art.

I took Pinnacle System Support's word (found with great difficulty navigating their poorly developed FAQ) and exchanged the card 3 times, trying it in multiple systems with different OS's. Every card created earsplitting static at max volume when using the audio jack. When trying to use audio signals delivered directly to the video card, the audio/video sync was never accomplished, and continued to degrade indefinitely. The drivers are another story, never installing correctly despite all efforts. Continual installation errors and application lock-ups forced me to eventually give up on this card.

I learned an important lesson from this: don't purchase items without first reading peer reviews, and don't purchased items from Pinnacle Systems. This is not the only item from Pinnacle Systems that I have had problems with.

Hopefully those that read this will look into another TV card tuner; and hopefully Pinnacle Systems will begin practicing ethical business!

1-0 out of 5 stars Boy, was this a mistake!!!
I am in complete agreement with the other reviews I have read about this product. Unfortunately, I didn't read them before I bought the Pinnacle Systems PCTV Pro. Besides most of the other *bugs* listed,(eg. audio-sync problems, lack of basic editing functions in the main program, and no radio tuner) I have found that the PCTV mysteriously turns itself on at random times throughout the day even when nothing has been scheduled to record.
The documentation is terrible. The support website is full of dead links or loops that send you back to where you started without an answer to your question or a hint of how to find one.
I would not recommend the Pinnacle Systems PCTV Pro.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible hardware, buggy software.. but wait! It gets worse
I don't think I've ever been as disappointed with any electronics component as I have been with the Pinnacle TV tuner card.

Here's what you're SUPPOSED to get: the Pinnacle TV tuner card accepts incoming video signals through an included S-video in, composite in, or conventional cable/Antenna input. Software supplied allows you to switch between those three inputs; in the case of the cable/antenna input, a built in tuner allows tuning in VHF/UHF channels 2 to 83, or cable channels from 2 to 160 (or therabouts). The video signal is displayed on a resizable screen, which operates much like a conventional window; or as a full screen display. Audio handling is sparse at best; the card has an audio out jack (no audio in) and you are supplied with a small external jumper cable, which you are expected to run from the audio out jack to the external input jack on your sound card. (Lets hope you're not already using it for something else.) The card also has an internal audio out jack, but no cord is supplied; and the unconventional plug is difficult to find.

The card offers you the opportunity to watch TV in a variable sized screen; to record TV; and to pause live broadcasts, giving you the rough equivalent of a Tivo or Personal Video Recorder. When you hit pause, the screen freezes, and the video signal is diverted to your hard drive as a digital datastream. Hit pause again, and the data comes off your hard drive and is displayed on your screen, while new data continues to be recorded to your hard drive. In this fashion you can jump forward and back through the program, playing the same section over again, skipping past commercials, and generally having a merry old time.

At least, that's the sales pitch.

The difference between the Pinnacle PCTV and the Pinnacle PCTV Pro, is that the pro includes a stereo TV decoder (the non-pro version is mono only). If you read the enclosed advertisng material, you will be told that the Pro also includes a stereo FM tuner; and indeed, the Pinnacle PCTV Pro website states, "Watch TV or listen to the radio on your PC." However, when you purchase the Pinnacle Pro card, you will find that there is NO radio tuner, there is NO FM antenna input (even though one is clearly illustrated in the enclosed advertising), and indeed there is virtually no hardware difference between the two cards.

But the lies and deceit don't stop there. Let's go back to the claims made for the card on the Pinnacle website. "Create your own movies from video captured from TV, VCR or Camcorder with the easy to use Studio software." Well, true enough... but they fail to mention that the Studio software supplied is a 30 DAY TRIAL. After that point, the software locks up, and you are expected to purchase it, at great additional cost. Without this software, you can still record TV shows; but you cannot edit out commercials, string multiple shows into one presentation, or any other commonly done VCR-type tasks. You can start recording, stop recording, and that's it. No pause, no nothing.

Let's talk about the hardware for a moment... or lack thereof. You see, there's not much hardware here, and that's a problem. That conventional NTSC or PAL TV signal is analog, and it needs to be converted to a digital format FAST. The digital conversion takes a lot of processing power, and the conversion from raw digital video to MPEG format takes an awful lot more. Most TV cards that permit recording and PVR functionality - such as the Hauppage 350, available through Amazon - accomplish this with built in hardware MPEG encoders/decorders. Not so the Pinnacle card; it makes use of your computer horsepower, substituting a software program for a hardware chip. This is fine, at least in theory; but to make it work, you need to have well written software, and enough computing horsepower to dim the lights in the neighborhood whenever you boot up the machine. I was using an Athlon XP 1800+ with 768 megs of 333 Mhz RAM, two 40 GB Maxtor Diamondmax 7200 RPM Hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration, and Windows XP home... and it wasn't enough. Even with all nonessential programs and services shut down, the performance was still unsatisfactory. A minimum 2.5 GHz processor and 1 GB of FAST RAM - and a state of the art video card, like a high end Geforce FX or equivalent Radeon - would be a minimum requirement. But even then, the software is so glitchy, buggy, unreliable and undependable as to make the whole procedure an exercise in frustration.

Oh, I could go on. I could talk about the audio drifting out of sync with the video every time you change channels, making it impossible to channel surf. I could talk about the included remote that turns the software off, but won't start it again. I could tell you about the amazingly unhelpful technical support, the fiendishly confusing driver downloads section, the dozens of bugs... but you must get the picture by now.

This is a lousy product. It was implemented by a rank amateur with no concept of quality, and a keen desire to save money on manufacturing. The software was written by an individual or group without the faintest concept of the procedures necessary to write quality software - and it shows, all over the place. There's a lot of amateur freeware that is better written than is the software packaged with this product. This software has more bugs than a cheap, inner city flophouse. The lack of ethics in marketing, production, and execution all speak volumes in describing Pinnacle Corporation as a company desperate to sell a fundamentally defective product in any way possible, including lies, treachery and deceit. However, all the glitzy packaging, the loud promises and enthralling hype can do nothing to change this product from what it really is: a sad little electronics disaster.

If, after all I've said, you're still contemplating buying this card, let me offer you one last word of advice: buy the card from a retailer with a very generous returns policy.

Because you're going to be taking advantage of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should have looked at reviews before buying
The previous review sums up this junky product. All 4 times I launched the product it locked up the PC. I bought this card mostly to copy my home videos to DVD, but if your VCR doesn't have a s-video out, you must use the composite video line. BUT, THERE IS NO COMPOSITE AUDIO INPUT????? Who wants to burn silent DVD's??? This is being returned first thing tomorrow. What a waste of time. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No trial, does not work for my CDR
Oh my... I brought this product so I can do slideshows on a VCD with the "proper beat" of the background music but apparently it does not recognize my Dell CDRW drive.

1. Ask for a Trial. This thing does not have a trial version.
Now I'm stuck with a product that can't can't recognize my CDRW.

Note: Most of my other software like Roxio, iTunes, Windows Media Player can "see" and burn with my CDRW. This is the ONLY product i've used that can't.

2. Support Sucks! - Go to their website. They'll convince you to use their website to look for support even though it's useless.
They responded to me with a "generic" email instead of trying to help solve my problem. Still waiting for a simple question of "Do you support my CDRW" drive?". Try calling their support number (not even an 800 number) and they still try to push you in using their website.

Again, to avoid getting stuck with something useless, don't buy unless they can give u a "trial version" like some of the "real" big companies like Jasc Photo album.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible program
This may make wonderful videos but the problem is getting it installed so that it acutally works! If you just install it like any other program, it freezes up your computer. Then you write to support and they make you jump through hoops-uninstalling/installing, taking out your sound card, reinstalling the drivers for both your sound and video cards even though they work just fine. I got a list of 10 things to do just to make this program work. If you don't respond within 48 hours, you have to start the entire help process all over again and it takes at least that long or longer to do all the things they suggest if you have a normal life with other things to do. I have still not been able to make mine work so I am now looking for a new program. Any suggestions?

1-0 out of 5 stars No Audio, Poor Audio Sync
I returned this program after countless hours trying to copy VHS tapes to DVD.

I burned 4 coasters with no audio, video was fine. I spent hours on the phone with tech support and was given a different fix each time to try. When I finally figured out that when bringing up the volume control menu and selecting Properties then "Recording" I was able to burn the DVD with sound however the sync with the lip movement was terrible. I again attempted to copy a musical I created, the lip sync was even worse.

After purchasing a book by Jan Ozer and trying to figure out how to correct the Audio Sync, I still lost the battle and returned the product to Best Buy for refund.

Anyone buying this program is asking for a lot of headaches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle misleads purchasers
I purchase the Pinnacle Studio Av/Dv Deluxe version 9 video editing software. The package States that it includes 288 unique 2d and 3d transitions. The web site says " The package includes a professional breakout box, hundreds of additional 2D and 3D transitions and the full version of Pinnacle Studio v.9, the most powerful software video editor in its class" and the owners manual says it comes with the transitions. But I found out you must pay as much as $500.00 extra to unlock them. I found on their web sites frequently asked questions that this had been brought to their attention months ago and they have made no effort to change the web site or packaging to clarify that it may come with the 288 transitions but you can't use them without paying more. Most companies would put an * next to the description and explain that they are not usable without paying a fee. This is the most blatant false advertising I have ever seen. The reason some people can't make it work is if you use one of the locked transitions without paying the fee it won't burn the DVD. I didn't see that you had to pay extra and it will let you put them in but wont burn. No warning comes up or anything to inform you it wont work without paying extra. I have had no problems other then the false advertising it works good and mine is very fast to render and burn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Locks up often
I bought this with out doing much research and went with the sales persons recommendation. WRONG move. Studio 9 deluxe has been nothing but trouble for me. I got it to capture from my mini DV camcorder just fine and I started to edit the footage and was finding it easy and simple. I started connecting segments together and then began to adjust the length of the segments. At this point it started to lock up often, like about every other segment drop. After working with it for about 8hrs total I had my 25 min film clipped together. I then started to add wipes and then, about 5 clips into the 25 min film, it locked up on me and I had to back out. Now, every time I go back into it to add more wipes, the display locks up and will not show me the final product. I AM RETURNING THIS PRODUCT ASAP. Pinnacle has released 2 updates to this 9.0.0 version (the 9.0.0 version ships with the product)but, at this point, I dont want to even try the updates. The other reviews on this site listed above me tell the story. I think Pinnacle should stay in the Professional business. Count me out on this home version. I am looking hard at Pyro Professional from Abode. Its twice the money but I bet it will be half the headache. God Bless you in you decision ><>

1-0 out of 5 stars will not burn to DVD
This program worked fine until the last step: burning to DVD.
This omission makes it completely worthless. Of course, I have no idea how to get Pinnacle to help me. Does anyone know how to get this to work? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Editing Software
Wow! I guess I am lucky - no problem installing or using. I use Windows XP and have had to reinstall after a crash with no prob. I use this software to edit songs for my (personal hobby) internet radio station - it is excellent for that! I have also used the software to ID3 tag MP3's that didn't show up correctly on CDDB, and I love the crossfade function for my mixes. I am not an expert on anything technical, and this software has been pretty user friendly for me. I plan to upgrade to version 5 when it comes out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update to the Above
I finally got some help. Not from Steinberg but from Pinnacle systems. We had to edit a couple of registry entries before the software would work. Now I have to say I am pleased with the product. I was using MusicMatch and I've left it alone to use myMP3 Pro.

1-0 out of 5 stars check the steinberg site before you buy this one
The first problem I experienced with this software was it could not see my cd drive. I went to the Steinberg site (the company who supports this software) and found that there are quite a few problems with this software. I also searched their site for technical support and could not find any. Maybe it is there, but it was hard to find. I wanted to return the software but I bought it here (Amazon).... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good suite, if a bit slow
Instant CD/DVD includes a very good suite of tools for burning CDs and DVDs. It includes all the features found in "Instant Copy," which allows you to copy DVDs, even fitting a 9GB DVD onto a regular CD-R or CD+R disc. In addition, Pinnacle throws in tools to capture videos and burn homemovie DVDs and also rip and burn CD music. Usually these tools are not worth the extra you'd pay, but the rebate makes this a very good deal.

The only downside is Instant CD/DVD is slower than the DVD burning program that came with my burner. But, truth is, since burning DVDs usually takes tons of time anyway, whether it's 15 hours or 16 hours doesn't really make a difference to me, hence I still give Instant CD/DVD 5 stars for bringing all your burning needs together nicely.

Since it worked out-of-box on my WinXP laptop, I have no contact with tech support so can't comment on that. My tip for successful burning is: #1, buy a brand-name DVD burner; stick with Sony, Pioneer or Toshiba; the money you save on a generic brand ain't worth the troubles. #2, see tip#1.

4-0 out of 5 stars Faster now with the Instant CD/DVD 7.06 patch
I have been using this program for about 2 months now. My main use for it is backing up dual layer (DL) 8.5 GB DVDs onto a single 4.3GB recordable DVD. Instant CD/DVD use to take 8 hours to do this on my nicely equiped PC. With the latest 7.06 patch, released in May '03, it now takes about 3 hours. That's pretty good.

There is free software available on the internet that will resize DL DVDs too, but I am very impressed with the final DVD quality when using Instant CD/DVD. (I have not tried the free stuff)

Three things worth noting:
- Instant CD/DVD does not decrypt any copyrighted DVDs, which makes it useless as a backup tool by itself.
- There is free DVD decrypter software that will copy your DVDs to a HD and remove the protection to allow a backup.
- I have read that this is illegal to do in the US. A step backwards because fair use laws would allow backup copies of VHS tapes. What gives?

This software is a suite. I have not fully explored the other features. I have created a DVD from the included Expression authoring software. It worked well, but I am still a novice.

I am satisfied with my purchase, and believe it is well worth the money.

My Computer: Windows XP Pro, AMD Athlon 2200+, HP DVD300i DVD+R, and 120GB HD.
Home Theater: Progessive scan DVD player, 52" progressive scan RP-TV, Dolby Digital audio system, and surround sound speakers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't go there
My laptop came pre-installed with Instant DVD/CD but my experience is the same as many of your other correspondents; I have yet to burn a DVD successfully - it appears to go all the way then either slows to a trickle, never quite completing the burning operation, or simply crashes. Their web-site is no help, I've installed the most up-to-date patches but there's no improvement and apparently no help. I think I will go back to Nero if I can actually remove this successfully from my PC!

1-0 out of 5 stars How does Pinnacle stay in business?
This review is for Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD version 7.06. There is a newer version on the market, so I was able to pick this up cheap, thinking that I was getting a bargain. Guess again. I was hoping that I'd be able to edit video files that I'd ripped from DVD after changing them from VOB to mpeg. No luck. Whenever I try to import video it crashes. Haven't tried other formats yet. Maybe I'll have better luck with avi or mpg, but I'm not holding my breath. In addition, the interface on the video editing software is idiotically simple, yet simultaneously unintuitive, so you get the worst of both worlds.
Patches? The Pinnacle website was no help, having only three links in the support section for version 7x. All of the links were dead, but it didn't matter anyhow because none of them appeared to be related to my problem. Haven't contacted support yet.
Oh, and good luck getting this thing off your machine if you don't want it. Not only does it not come with an uninstall, but it stashes files all over the place, and it screwed up my other burning software so that it wouldn't work! If you install this, make sure you use a program that keeps track of the changes made so that you can completely uninstall it (I think there's something in Norton utilities that does the job). In addition to the craptacular editing program, Instant CD/DVD comes with several other programs, none of which interested me. I have tried the disc burning program--I had no choice since Instant CD/DVD screwed up my Nero files--and it worked the first few times, but it soon started crashing, too. I figure it crashed about 20% of the time. I've also tried Instant Copy, which is included in the Instant CD/DVD suite, as a stand alone program and found it remarkably underwhelming. It takes for-e-ver, even on a P4 machine. I much prefer DVD Shrink, which is free and decrypts discs, unlike Instant Copy.
After spending hours fooling around with Instant CD/DVD I realized that it's much more than just bad software. It's a material refutation of the dogma of free-market efficiency. If Pinnacle is still in business, then clearly, clearly, markets don't work in the manner that economists like to imagine.
The most satisfying thing about this software is the feeling you get when you throw it in the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth - even for free
This software is a prime example of what a bad written software can be! After I installed the software, I did not find any good way of trimming away some of the excess fat in order to make a good quality backup (i.e. lack of program options). Fortunately, I found some public domain software - "InstantCopySettings" to help with this. The software takes way too long even on a P4 machine to transcode a DVD. The real icing on the cake is that after it automatically adjusted to fit on a 4.7GB DVD+RW, it complained about not being able to write to the disk. Since it creates the content in its proprietary format, I couldn't even use Nero to burn it to the DVD. DVD Shrink Beta 5 did a great job of converting including writing to the same DVD+RW disk - i.e. the disk was not faulty.

I also tried to make a DVD using still images. Couldn't figure out how to make this work.

Saving the worst for last - this software also installs "Instant Drive". This interfered with DVD Shrink making it hang. I cannot even uninstall the "Instant Drive" completely (amateur programmers!).

I did get the software for free after rebates - but it is collecting dust now! I would recommend staying away from it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Neverending story of frustration.
I've bought this product expecting that if I have already encoded file in Mpeg-2 it will be easy to create simple menu for my own home video, according all information I discovered from Pinnacle web site. But, unfortuanately, you cannot create a DVD, which will fit to 4.7 Gb blank. If you try to create a DVD from avi file it may take forever (couple of hours) just to create a DVD files. Final quality is really bad, you will have 700 Mb or ever more of free space left on your blank disc, but the "Expression" will show you that there's no space left.

One time it created a DVD with for me where the total size of all files was about 1 Gb, but program showed that there was no space left!

The program is really unstable, as all other Pinnacle products.

I have Pinnacle Studio 8 also with the same set of problems:
- poor video quality
- wrong calculation of free space on DVD
- unexpectable slow performance.

If you want DVD authoring software Expression is not the right choice. And I will give you the same advice if you decide to buy Pinnacle Studio. I do not expect from them any improvement in version 9. The most recent reviews just awful.

P.S. If you think that my system is slow, here is draft spec:
p4-2.4 GHz, 1Gb RAM, 7200rpm 120 Gb Hard drive... Yeah, really slow system for Pinnacle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Thrilled
I had been using Dazzle DVD Complete which provided fairly regular upgrades, and checked their site for an update only to find a Pinnacle webpage offering a $40 upgrade from DVD Complete to Expression. Apparently they have taken Dazzle over and won't be supporting the product. So I ordered it ... me=idiot. Didnt do enough research and found that its the equivalent of "My First DVD Software" There is no way to create a professional looking DVD -which is what I use it for. Its basically for newbies who want to throw old videos of their kids on a DVD and send it to the folks.

That, I admit is my own fault for not further researching, but I am a software junkie and was impulsive. BUT, as far as Pinnacle's marketing it as an upgrade? UPGRADE???? Would you consider going from Photoshop 7.0 to Microsoft Draw an upgrade? Pinnacle obviously would.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad experience using it
I usually do not write comments but this time I feel I have to write something about it, because I am really disappointed the Pinnacle Expression. I used it to create a DVD-R using existing well-coded Mpeg2 files, but it is very very slow, regardless in Pentium IV 1.8GHz or Pentium III 600 MHz, two of my PC's. One thing really puzzled me was, in either PC, the CPU usuage was only about 25-30 percent. And the program IS running, not non-responding. No huge I/O activity. No DVD buring activity either. Then why isn't it running faster, to use 100% CPU??? It took one hour, only incrementing from 50% to 52% complete in preparing the DVD contents, not even the burning yet-- a separate process. And then it always errored out at about 70%, "Error to Complie File", something like it. Stupid. I am an IT professional myself. I keep my PC environment simple. There're enough memory and hard disk space in my PC's. There's no registry mess up. If there's anything wrong, it must be the program (I already downlaoded the lastest update from Pinnaclesys.com). I am very disappoined. It is such a straightforward and simple program yet they don't know how to code it well. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If having a separate television and computer aren't enough for you, now you can watch television on your PC. The Pinnacle Studio PCTV is a TV tuner card that allows you to receive television signals and watch them clearly on your desktop. After you get past the novelty, you'll appreciate the practical and fun applications of the Studio PCTV.

We installed the capture card in a free PCI slot on our motherboard and connected the audio loop-back cable from the audio-out jack on the tuner card to the audio-in jack on the sound card.We needed to install the software twice as several drivers were not installed on the first try. The manual left a little to be desired and we found that we needed to resort to the help function quite frequently to understand specific features of the software. Online documentation was also slim, but once we found the information, using all the applications was simple and intuitive.

After we connected an antenna to the TV tuner, reception was surprisingly clear. (You also have the option of connecting cable to the input instead.) The images were not too pixelated when viewed at a 16-bit, high-color resolution. We had the option of viewing the picture at full screen, 640 x 480, or 320 x 240 pixels; the full screen picture looked crisper than a standard television without a cable connection. If you have a computer in a living area at home with a decent-sized monitor, you may be tempted to watch TV on your computer.

The Studio software features an easy-to-use interface that lets you capture video from the tuner or from composite or S-Video sources. Making movies is as simple as dragging and dropping clips, adding titles (which you can customize with the easy TitleDeko software), overlaying sound, and, with one click, making the compiled frames into a digitized AVI (audio video interleaved) or MPEG movie. We threw together a short film using several television clips and some previously created AVI files, added sound effects over the top, created titles, and saved the movie--all in under 45 minutes. The final product, a two-minute MPEG movie, was about 8.3 MB. Although slightly rudimentary, this feature of the Pinnacle Studio PCTV is perfect for families who want to compile clips to send to friends, and the results are surprisingly slick.

Pros:

  • Great picture
  • Easy-to-use drag-and-drop software
  • Powerful features
  • Terrific value

Cons:

  • Slim documentation
  • Slightly difficult installation

3-0 out of 5 stars PCTV almost ready for prime-time
I've just bought the PCTV and have noticed some bugs in the software. You can watch TV just fine with the card, but the included Studio software will not run on my system without crashing. I haven't been able to capture a single clip since buying this card. I'm a systems tech., so I have some idea how to troubleshoot PC problems, but after checking out Pinnacle's msg. boards, I'm no closer to figuring out what's wrong. There may be a problem with DirectX 7.0. A co-worker who has almost an identical system (except he has DirectX 6.1) has no problem at all. This rings true for most of the people on the msg. boards, also. I bought this card mainly to watch TV on my PC, so the capture problems don't affect me too greatly, but if you're buying this card to primarily capture video, be aware you might run into some problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite surprising...
I ordered this card not more than a week ago. It arrived, and I had it installed in about 20 minutes. The installation instructions were ok, but basic knowledge of the inside of a PC is reccomended. Anyway, I installed the drivers and software and attempted to watch cable TV on my computer -- I was quite surprised with the quality. I have a relatively slow computer (200Mhz), but I have a 10,000rpm SCSI-3 hard drive, and I am able to capture video at 320x240 at 30 frames/second with excellent results. All in all, it's not the greatest piece of hardware in the world, but, for the ~$... I paid for it, it is worth every penny!

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Problems w/XP
I shared many of the same problems as the other reviewers. I got a brand new PC and moved my card from a Dell to an HP Pavilion 450y. The software installed fine, but everytime I try to watch TV it hangs the computer within one minute. It hangs XP! I thought that wasn't possible. I have spent close to a week going back and forth with Pinnacle Support. At least they respond to me, but it has taken forever for them to basically just give up. They told me to reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows...on a machine that is 10 days old. Don't think I am going to do that.
Well, I've wasted enough of my time on this...going to buy a TV and just make room for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Designed Software and Driver.
I've not been happy with my PCTV at all. The biggest problem is the driver and capture software call "PCTV Vision" provided with the device. The software seems designed by some armature programmer without much experience developing real Windows compliant applications. A couple of examples: (1) The open and save file dialogs do not use the standard Windows interface, (2) The application window color is fixed light blue and disregards your desktop color settings, (3) There are no HELP or ABOUT buttons, etc. In addition to these cosmetic problems, the software has deeper and more troublesome bugs that are difficult to work around. Version 5.1 of "PCTV Vision" was not even certified for Windows XP. Pinnacle claims their latest 5.5 version is both certified and improved, but I noticed absolutely no difference. I've never been able to burn a CD using PCTV Vision, even though my CDR/W works perfectly with all my other applications. The Pinnacle software relies on Microsoft DirectX for multimedia operations. However, DirectX reports a number of errors (such as improper opening and closing of multimedia objects) whenever PCTV Vision is run. The PCTV driver also doesn't play well with other applications. When I've tried to access the PCTV capture card from another program, such as Adobe Premier or ULEAD MovieFactory, the driver bombs and reports an error. While I have been able to do basic recording using PCTV, I always keep wishing I'd bought a capture card and software that was more professionally designed.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR PAL FORMAT USERS: The PCTV tuner is fixed for NTSC video format on the USA model and PAL video format for the European model. I found the advertising on the box very misleading as it claimed it worked with both NTSC and PAL, but this only applies to the composite input and not the TV tuner itself. I receive both PAL and NTSC signals, but am unable to use my USA version PCTV to record any of the European channels. If you're working with mixed format signals like me then be sure to check that capture card tuner you buy can process them (check the manual before buying if possible).

BOTTOM LINE: The PCTV capture card works, but you might be happier with a card from another company.

Because you're going to be taking advantage of it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
The card and software installation went smoothly. I burned my first test cd within 30 minutes. (about 10 minutes in length)
There is a few seconds pause when I click on a drop-down box, but other than that everything worked fine. My machine is a 1.73 ghz Athlon, 640 mb ram, Windows XP Home. I would suggest reading the manual and using a pretty fast computer.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
stay clear. it is the worst software I have ever purchased.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of potential, little results
I was really excited to try this product, but after hours and hours of frustration, I finally gave up. On the surface, the GUI interface is very slick and it seems like Studio 8 could do everything I wanted (record analog video, edit, and create VCD's). It has nice editing features that are fairly intuitive. However, the application locked up or crashed regularly (I installed v8.8). You can use the auto-save feature to help minimize loss of work. When it was running, I was constantly encountering little quirks and made the user's experience frustrating. Plus, it was painfully slow on my PC (P3, 1GHz, 384MB RAM, WinME). Pinnacle should reduce the GUI 'fanciness' and work on making it run faster and smoother. It seems that it would be a great product, if it worked as promised. My recommendation: Wait for Studio 10!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Clear
Simple, let's cut to the chase...this product stinks. Stay clear and do not purchase. I cannot vouch for Pinnacle's other products but do not buy this one. In addition to their buggy software/hardware, their customer support is poor.

You've been forewarned, look elsewhere for your analog needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buggy, never really worked
The editing features are good and it is easy to learn and use. But it was difficult to install, the tech support is poor and after many tries I could never got it to work right. It crashed constantly, and would not produce some of the file types listed. I really wanted to use this software, so I spent a lot of time trying to get technical support. My problems were never resolved. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dumber than your average bear
Actually a mixed review from my experience. I found it easy to install (with a Sony Vaio > Sony camcorder as my gear). In fact I had a DVD made with some cool special effects in under four hours from opening the box. I am not much of a computer hack either, so easy to use. Hence four stars for this half pf the review.
HOWEVER....manual and support is VERY slim. Also certain to read the product info closely (as I did not - stupid bear) as you can only go from analog to digital and not the other way around. Now I have some DVDs that only certain family members can use and I am looking hard at the Dazzle Hollywood as another investment ([price] plus) to be able to edit on my Vaio and return to VHS. I will probably review that product in a week or so, so if you want to make use of my trial and error (or success) hang on.....

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Money!!! It Doesn't Work
There are many things wrong with this product. As an A+ Certified tech, installation should be a piece of cake. Wrong. It has been a couple of days and no go. I will have to hook it up to one of only 2 USB ports on the motherboard to see if that would work but with a powered USB hub, it will not. But the big surprise is the (what I feel)lack of product support. You have a choice of 1. a forum 2. faq 3. email. The manual is all of 8 pages and it starts on Page 2. Better to use a PCI capture card and leave the USB headaches behind. ... Read more
