Amazon.com Product Description

Merge your home computing with your home theater in Philips' 55PP9363H Epic Series high-definition projection television. The massive, 55-inch set offers compatibility with progressive-scanned 480p and full high-definition 1080i video signals, all of which benefit from the set's wealth of picture-enhancing technologies.

Designed to meet the demands of curved CRT faceplates, Philips' 35-point convergence brings with it the accuracy of digital technology for flawless convergence of red, green, and blue electron guns and a superb picture with no colored haloes.

If a video image remains stationary, it can eventually burn a permanent after-image into the screen. Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC) periodically shifts your television picture in increments that are tiny, but still large enough to blur image retention. Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A 3-line digital comb filter gives you Improved chroma/luminance separation over standard 2-line glass comb filters for a difference you can really see.

EyeFidelity gives you a choice between two different scanning techniques: progressive and interlaced scanning. Progressive scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines per field by displaying all picture frame lines at once, eliminating line flicker. Interlaced mode reduces annoying motion artifacts and helps smooth jagged lines sometimes seen on images of curved and angled surfaces.

The set's dual-tuner picture-in-picture lets you monitor one TV channel while simultaneously watching another. Its 10-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers. The set uses large, 4 x 6-inch stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials.

Connections include 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, 1 HD component-video inputs, 1 high-definition PC input (RGB+H/V component-video), and a DVI-HDTV direct-digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device. A set of audio/video outputs lets you integrate the set with your stereo or surround receiver, and a set of side-mounted AV inputs simplifies hookup of a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR.

The 55PP9363H's protective screen filter helps prevent accidental damage to the delicate front lenticular screen.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Philips 15PF8946 15-inch HDTV-ready flat-panel LCD TV is more than great looks. The perfect size for a small space, the less-than-3-inch-thick display provides an excellent audio/visual experience with features like Crystal Clear III, Active Control, Virtual Dolby Surround, and unique flat speakers. It even has a built-in FM radio tuner so you can listen to all your favorite radio channels, and up to 40 station presets make sure you tune in fast.

The high-definition (HD tuner not included), 1,024 x 768 XGA LCD panel uses the latest panel technology, such as Philips' proprietary Crystal Clear package of innovations featuring a 3D digital comb filter (eliminates dot crawl and color bleeding, enhancing fine detail, cleaning up image outlines, and removing most extraneous colors), Dynamic Contrast for deep blacks and pure whites, and green and blue color enhancement. The high 400:1 contrast ratio gives you better subtle color details and the ability to see the picture in bright light conditions, and the quick 16-millisecond response time means it's capable of handling fast-moving action--even 3D games--without image blur or lag. Active Control delivers the best picture setting, any time, from any source. The incoming signal is automatically analyzed and key picture settings, like sharpness, color, and contrast, are adjusted. The 4:3 aspect ratio is better for viewing analog broadcast TV and pan-and-scan-formatted video, but the TV has a 16:9 compressed picture mode so you can have a more realistic cinema experience.

Built-in flat speakers (4 watts per channel) sit on either side of the active-matrix TFT LCD, giving you full stereo sound without needing to connect to an external speaker system. Virtual Dolby surround-sound support simulates cinema surround-sound effects without the need for rear speakers. Philips' Smart Listening auto volume leveling eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

Other features include 100 preset channels, Autostore for easy tuning, Auto Picture (five modes give you picture settings for different types of programming), Auto Sound (four modes to tailor the TV sound to enhance what you're watching), multilanguage onscreen display, sleep timer, integrated NTSC tuner and RF jack for terrestrial reception, ergonomic remote control, and an antireflective screen.

Want to do more than just watch TV? The 15PF8946 has an FM antenna connector for getting better reception, a rear composite input, and a component input that helps minimize digital and line-scan artifacts during DVD playback. And, because the TV is progressive scan, it can take advantage of the more filmlike images produced by progressive-scan DVD players. It has a VGA input too, which receives the signal from your PC so you can use it as a TV and a PC monitor. A set of side jacks has a composite A/V input with S-video, a mini headphone jack, and an audio in for using the TV's speakers with your PC.

Amazon Product Description

High on convenience, low on hassles, Philips' DVDR615 progressive-scan DVD player/recorder gives you a simple way to share your home videos with others, relieve your VCR of its regular TV taping duties, and enjoy quality home cinema presentations on standard or high-definition televisions. Using the model's extensive inputs--including an i.Link digital video jack--you can transfer and assemble your most treasured camcorder footage, archive all your old video tapes, or burn video from your PC straight to high-capacity DVD--up to an amazing 8 hours per disc side using either DVD+R or rewritable DVD+RW.

The DVDR615 features progressive-scan technology, which enables compatible TVs to display images at double the frequency of standard TVs, minimizing flicker and making the picture easier on your eyes.

The DVDR615 also features a disc manager that allows instant viewing of all recorded discs, storing contents details for up to 9,000 titles across up to 999 discs. You can also use the DVDR615 like a VCR, burning televised programs directly to disc using VCR Plus+ simplified programming. Recording functions include favorite scene selection, automatic/manual chapter marker insertion, selectable index pictures, selectable background picture, append, divide, and "fit to space."

DVD+RW discs require no finalizing--you can record, eject, and play them with minimal fuss, thanks to "background formatting." This feature, which lowers total burning time, is an advantage over the "dash" formats. Other DVD+RW advantages include on-disc content editing and multisession writing. And, through DVD+RW and DVD+R's compatibility with most existing DVD players, they're a great way for you to share your special memories with family and friends.

But the DVDR615 is also a first-rate DVD player, featuring progressive-scan video outputs, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound passthrough, MP3 CD playback (CD-R/CD-RW), and compatibility with most DVD media (including video-mode DVD-R and DVD-RW).

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVDR615 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Top-of-the-line interlaced component-video inputs and outputs (the output is switchable with the progressive-scan output) help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts from component-video sources and on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video inputs and outputs bring compatibility with nearly any video component and television monitor. Audio inputs consist of 2-channel analog jacks with 24-bit/96 kHz analog-to-digital conversion and Dolby Digital 2.0 audio compression (compression is non-defeatable). Video conversion, to and from digital, is performed by high-quality 10-bit, 54 MHz converters.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do all that it says it does.
I was very disappointed to find that this recorder could not read all the formats consistently. It could read one dvd+ but not another, one dvd-, but not another, one svcd but not another, etc. I had bought it with expectation that it could read all the formats if they were recorded correctly and this was not the case. I had to return it. Otherwise, setup was easy. My old APEX player, which was 1/3 the price, reads everything without a hitch. Glad I didn't part with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good machine
I haven't had any problems with my machine and have been pleased with the quality. The video is good all the way to the 8 hr mode. It is easy to hook up and navigate around with the remote. The onscreen menu is a bit awkward so you need to keep your user manual close by until you get the hang of things. Overall I am glad I chose this machine over the panasonic, as this machine is more compatable with most DVD players on the market. I was considering the panasonic model but the compatability issue was too much of a risk. So far the discs I have made with this machine have played in every other DVD player I've tried them in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pulled, Despite Horrific Exp w/the 985
For some inexplicable reason, I just decided that I would buy this after multiple rounds of suffering with the 985. So I ordered this and then packed up my 985 and sent it back to the factory for a second time.

Meanwhile, when this was delivered, I had a bit of a hassle with it because I plugged it into my digital receiver and got 'no signal' when trying to monitor the recording. Also, I wanted to have an S connection. Well, finally got it working by moving to EXT2.

Anyway, to my amazement, I have not had a single recording fail, and I've done a ton of them since purchasing a couple months ago. Never once have I seen DISC ERROR or have I had to wipe the disc. So I was surprised to read the other accounts which sound like 985-like behavior. Lots of the online disc ordering places will send you sample packs now so you can try different brands. I got mine from rima.com. One last note: I make all my recordings to RW and then take them to my G5 and make copies onto -Rs, so I can't really speak to the long-standing problems with +Rs.

1-0 out of 5 stars I tried top and bottom Philips DVD Recorders
The DVDR615 was better left in the store I also tried the DVDR80/17, top dog of the Philips line. As stated by other reviewers "when" it would write a disk "maybe and just maybe" it could read it. This goes for both of the machines. I upgraded the firmware three times all together and still no good they offer this online service. If they got it right before the sale maybe they would not have to upgrade so often. I gave up after 5 bad recordings and one good one on the 615. On the 80 I only lost 7 out of 15 DVD recorded. At about $2 per item or more DVDs don't come cheap but the troubles do. I will give Philips an A+ on their customer service, they are really helpful and do a great job they get a lot of practice. I just wish I had not gotten to know them almost by voice. I go to order a different brand because the DVD recorder is in my house to stay just not a Philips.

2-0 out of 5 stars I took it back to the store for a refund
I bought (and returned) a Philips DVDR615/17. (...)

It was a beautiful machine and it has a lot of nice features. It made beautiful disks...when it made disks.

I usually record on DVD+RW and I should have had a clue that things weren't going to go well when there was a preprinted form in the box telling me how to wipe a +RW disk, if the machine suddenly decided it couldn't read it.

Well, it decides that A LOT! You might go back to add an hour at the end of 4 other hours that this same machine already recorded...and suddenly it can't read it.

But, more disgusting, on just about every disk (and I tried several brands), it went "disk error" after a couple of minutes of recording and ruined the disk. If you erased it (using the secret disk wiping procedure) and started over, it usually recorded. But, that's not too practical if you want to timer record. In fact, I NEVER made a successful timer recording. (And, even if you got a non-timer recording, the machine might just forget how to read that same disk a few minutes later.)

I tried contacting Philips support to see if there was a firmware flash or something to correct this, but the only response I got referred me to an 800 number that turned out to be "Out of Warrantee Support", who wanted to charge me (...) just to talk to me, even though I had only had the goofy thing a few days. I think not.

So, back to the store it went.

If that one problem didn't exist, this would've been a great machine, so if they ever fix it, somebody let me know. ... Read more

47. Philips 50PF9966 50" Widescreen Pixel Plus Plasma HDTV

(price subject to change: see help)
Asin: B0002TXRF4

Amazon.com Product Description

Philips' 42PF9966 plasma television offers a high-performance, widescreen (16:9) image from a casing less than 4 inches deep. The 50-inch set offers astronomical brightness and contrast settings (1,000 cd/m3 and 3,000:1, respectively), as well as an integrated TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs. Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you'll enjoy vivid, detailed images from 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources, which render at up to 720p resolution on the set's native 1,366 x 768-pixel screen.

What Is Ambilight?
Ambilight technology is a feature that projects soft light onto the wall behind the TV. You can choose from six preset colors and white tones, or the tones can be personalized using the custom settings. Or simply allow Ambilight to adjust the backlight color based on the action on the screen.

Without ambient light

With ambient light
Philips' unique Ambilight feature throws a soft glow on the wall behind the set to relax your eyes and heighten your perception of image detail, brightness, contrast, and colors. Ambilight settings include 6 presets and a user-adjustable setting. Philips invented Digital Natural Motion to eliminate the "juddering" effects visible in moving video images. Digital Natural Motion estimates motion and corrects "juddering" in both broadcast and DVD-based movie material, smoothing and sharpening the images you see.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the 42PF9966 is a mere 3.9 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (mounting brackets provided). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

This TV also uses the power of the Pixel Plus processor to enhance every single pixel displayed. The result is razor-sharp pixels with incredible detail and depth. A feature called Active Control Plus continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction, even adjusting for changes in ambient viewing light.

The set pumps 15 watts per channel x 2 RMS, and onboard Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers. FM tuning options include 40 convenient presets, RDS (Radio Data Service) for visual station and song identification, and auto/manual station setting. The unit's .125-inch headphone jack affords private listening.

Audio/video inputs include a direct-digital HDMI input, 2 component-video (1 configured for RCA-type RGB+HV computer outputs, with separate horizontal and vertical sync terminals), 3 each S-video, and composite-video connections. A convenient side-panel input (including a headphone jack and an S-video jack) simplifies spontaneous hookups.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any AV source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you'll enjoy vivid, detailed images from progressive-scanned 480p sources on the set's native 640 x 480 screen.

Philips' Dynamic Contrast technology optimizes the contrast of the picture by stretching the white, gray, and black levels.

LCD technology allows screens to be thinner and televisions to be lighter and more energy efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but fits in places conventional televisions cannot. The 20PF7835 comes outfitted with Digital Crystal Clear III technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast and advanced, 10-bit processing. Further, the DCDi chip by Faroudja enhances resolution by eliminating the stair-step jagged edges often seen on progressive-scan displays.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DCDi chip also offers 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

AutoPicture lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, including sports, movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals. An audio volume leveler (AVL) keeps the TV sound at an even level for a more consistent, comfortable sound, and a five-band graphic equalizer lets you tailor the sound to your preference.

Inputs include a component-video (standard-definition), an S-video, and a composite-video connection, with a .125-inch stereo headphone jack for private listening (headphones not included).

Amazon.com Review

While you probably have one or more personal computers and may own a personal digital assistant, you might not know about personal digital video recorders, or DVRs. Well, all that's about to change, because DVRs are reshaping TV in a big way.

At their most basic, DVRs are glorified VCRs, but instead of storing audio and video on magnetic tape, they digitally record and store TV programs onto a hard disk drive, like a computer (but with much better resolution than those video clips that people sometimes send as e-mail attachments). The Philips DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service represents a new generation of DVR, combining AV recording services with duty as a DIRECTV satellite receiver, delivering up to 225 channels and special pay-per-view programs. It also uses TiVo proprietary software and services, which it downloads over an analog phone line.

The DSR6000 houses a massive, 40 GB hard drive that stores up to 35 hours of audio and video. You'll need a satellite dish to get started, in addition to your TV and the equipment supplied with the DSR6000. The DSR6000 is equipped with two satellite inputs, each compatible with DIRECTV. Only the first input is currently usable, but that's about to change.

If you don't already have a DIRECTV satellite dish (as you would if you were upgrading from an older DIRECTV receiver or buying the DSR6000 for use in another room), we strongly recommend you purchase a DIRECTV satellite dish with dual LNB capability. Dual LNB simply refers to the number of different signals a dish can send to your audio-video equipment. A dual LNB dish has two jacks or connectors inside the arm extending from the dish, while a single LNB, for example, has just one.

If you currently have a single LNB DIRECTV dish and want access to these changes as soon as they become available, an authorized installer can upgrade your dish (please call DIRECTV for more information at 1-800-347-3288 or visit them online at www.directv.com). If you don't know what LNB format you have, we recommend checking with an authorized installer, as you can't determine the LNB format by counting the number of arms pointing back to the dish.

You'll also need an analog phone jack to receive TiVo's services and to transfer data to the DSR6000. A 50-foot RJ-11 phone cord and telephone line splitter are included, so the receiver can share a single wall jack with a phone, if needed.

The DSR6000 automatically makes a daily call to TiVo at no cost to you. This call won't interrupt your phone calls or Internet connection, and the receiver is compatible with Call Waiting, Voice Messaging, and Caller ID. However, it's important to note that the DSR6000 must never be connected to a digital PBX phone system. Doing so may permanently damage the modem. It also voids your warranty.

Out of the box and in your hands, you'll immediately notice the substantial weight of the DSR6000; it's clearly built for performance. A robust "jack pack" lets you connect your TV and a range of audio-video components with this receiver, including a VCR, DVD player, and/or a game center.

Audio-video connections include an S-video output (cable supplied) and an optical digital-audio output (cable not included) for state-of-the-art video and audio. Two analog-audio stereo and composite-video outputs (cables supplied) offer extended connectivity with conventional equipment, while infrared (IR) and serial outputs are offered for future upgrades. An RF (CATV) output with channel switch (cable included) and a VHF/UHF input (for an antenna or an older VCR) complete the package.

Worried that the resolution of the TiVo storage will compromise the quality of your recordings? Don't be. Unlike a VCR, the DSR6000 gives you exactly what you put in. That's because the video signal from DIRECTV is digital, allowing the DSR6000 to write the satellite signal's ones and zeros directly to its hard drive. In addition, the DSR6000--like DIRECTV--is Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic compatible so you can enjoy your TV in surround sound when you route the audio output to your surround receiver.

The Philips DSR6000 also offers software programming and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). It's the first DVR to bring TiVo Version 2.0 software to the public, offering several improvements over previous releases, such as enhanced search features that can do keyword program searches, and an overtime scheduler that lets you add a buffer to the end of your recording--so you don't miss recording the play of the century just because it occurred in overtime.

Installation is a snap; the DSR6000's onscreen menus walk you through the process. Philips includes most of the accessories needed, along with a user-friendly suite of manuals. In addition, we tried out the customer support on three occasions during peak hours. Our wait never exceeded 60 seconds, and the Philips service solutions group on the other end of the phone was informed and helpful.

A DVR like the DSR6000 gives you unparalleled control over your viewing. First off, any time you're watching TV, a 30-minute recording buffer is always in action, letting you pause live TV--the image freezes when you hit pause, but the hard disk keeps recording. When you resume playback, the recording now stored on the hard disk picks up where you left off. So if the phone rings or the kids can't wait, you won't miss a moment of your show. You can pick up right where you left-off, skip the commercials that ran while you were with your family, and you may even end up finishing the program on schedule.

For sports fans, nothing rivals instant replay of live TV. Say you just watched an incredible triple play. With TiVo, you don't have to wait for the network's replay. Just replay it on the DSR6000. You can watch in slow motion or frame-by-frame and still catch up to the network's replay.

Both TiVo and DIRECTV offer several convenient features--status bars, channel banners, programming schedules, Wish Lists, recording archives, and more--that make TV watching easier than ever. And you can toggle between either system's features, using those you like best.

TiVo includes a search feature that lets you find programming based on theme, actor, time, date, etc. A programmable parental lock lets you guide your child's TV viewing. A clever thumbs-up/thumbs-down feature can track your viewing likes and dislikes. TiVo uses this data to search out and recommend new programs that you might enjoy.

You can record a lot of programs on the DSR6000's hard drive. TiVo manages these in a storage cache called Now Playing. You can select a recording from Now Playing and watch it, even if it's recording. You can also opt for the Season Pass feature and record an entire TV series. You can even set TiVo to record first-run shows only, ignoring the repeats. As the DSR6000's disk space fills, TiVo helps you manage it.

DIRECTV delivers a staggering range of program offerings into your home--up to 225 channels including music channels. Its video quality is equally outstanding. DIRECTV displays program schedules 14 days in advance, which is great for planning recording time or if you travel a lot. If an alternative audio track is available, DIRECTV also lets you listen to both TV programs and movies in other languages.

Among the best features of both DIRECTV and TiVo are their special programs. DIRECTV offers DIRECT TICKET, pay-per-view programming that you'll find nowhere else. TiVo offers its own television magazine called Tivolution, featuring one-of-a kind interviews, movie reviews, and special previews, as well as TiVo Takes with tips and programming updates for viewers.

Philips's DSR6000 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service not only reshapes your TV viewing, it rethinks it, ultimately letting you create your own network. --Heidi Wartelle ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Largely impressive
I bought this unit because of constant problems with a Sony DirecTV receiver that could not reliably record programs (the Sony units use an "IR blaster", a plastic wand that emulates a remote control, turning on the VCR when it's time to tape a show). I figured that if nothing else, the integrated TiVo would be able to fix that problem.

Obviously, it does, but there's much more. The ability to pause live TV doesn't sound like much until you actually do it. In fact, it's worth joining sports events 15 minutes late so you can blast through the commercials and gradually catch up with real-time.

This particular unit contains two satellite ports, and if properly connected can record two satellite programs at once (almost like having two DirecTV receivers). In fact, the unit can even replay one program from disk while recording two others from the satellite. The hitch is the "properly connected" caveat -- the lines in must either be the two lines from you dish (assuming a one-arm, dual LNB dish), or they must both come from a multi-switch. Depending on your home's wiring and the location of the receiver, dish, and multiswitch, this may not be possible. But if it is, you have a powerful TV organizing device.

While the DirecTV / TiVo integration is generally good, there are some maddening disconnects. When TiVo sees a program it thinks you'd like on a channel you don't get, it attempts to record it anyways. Also, navigation by "favorites" is not nearly as easy with this box as with some other DirecTV units (instead of having a "favorites" button on the remote that takes you to a list of your favorite channels and what's on them, you have to go to the master guide and change its display from "all channels" or "channels you get" to "favorites", and then undo this change when you next want to surf). Also, the unit is very slow to respond to the remote... I've seen channel changes take almost five seconds.

Still, the integration of the DirecTV and TiVo functionality is surely better than if you had separate boxes. If TiVo intrigues you and you have or are getting DirecTV, this is a pretty good way to go.

(four month update: since writing that review, this DirecTiVo has become an indispensible part of our household entertainment. But I am concerned about the unit's quality. In four months, we've had three serious errors. For a day, both receivers were unable to receive programming on even-numbered transponders, wiping out about half our channels (including all local channels). It mysteriously got better. A month ago, receiver 2 cut out entirely... but was revived with a restart of the unit. Last week, while watching a recorded program, the unit abruptly restarted itself and popped up the screen "A SEVERE ERROR HAS OCCURRED", telling us not to touch the unit for 24 hours while it tried to repair itself; the next morning it was fine. So while none of these errors has been sufficiently catasrophic to warrant a return to the factory [heck, they probably wouldn't take it without an obvious defect], I am reducing my original score from 4 to 3 stars because unlike computers, consumer electronics are expected to be rock-solid stable and crash-proof, and this device simply isn't.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great device.
This is just a great product. I've had directv for a couple years, so I'm going to focus on what tivo added when I replaced my old receiver with this one:

(1) the ability to interrupt live programming without missing anything. Say you're watching a show, and you get a phone call. Just pause (it is always recording what you're watching), complete your call and then resume.

(2) No wrong tape/missing tape/wrong tape speed/over-record problems. A problem with VCR recording is making sure the tape is in and set up properly. It's a nuisance at best, and can cause the recording to mis-fire completely at worst.

(3) Leave town and record. If you need to leave town for a few days or a week, you can still record the shows you want without having to worry about tape capacity.

(4) Record by program rather than time/channel/code.

(5) Multiple search options for locating programs of interest. Title, description, cast names, category are all options. You can locate programs easily, two weeks in advance (no hunting through program grids).

(6) Season pass. Once you find a program of interest, if it is recurring, you can subscribe by "season-pass", which will record all the episodes of a show (and you can choose first-run only if you want) even if it changes time, day, or length.

(7) Watch-while-recording. If you are recording a show, you don't have to wait until it is over before you can start watching it. Suppose there is a show you want to watch that starts at 10:00. Just show up at 10:20, and you can start watching from the beginning, skip the commercials, and still finish at 11:00.

(8) Manage old recordings. If you've got a significant amount of back-logged recording, managing it with tape is a mess: which tapes have what on them, avoiding over-recording, finding the programs, etc. With this device, however, you have 35 hours available by title presented in a simple menu. To be sure, you can't permanently archive this way, but if you want to it will play to VCR for you - without your having to make sure you get clean, labeled tapes set up in real-time.

(9) Quality. Because you're capturing the over-the-air pre-compressed signal, the recorded version is as good as the live version. This is a significant advantage that this has over the standard tivo.

(10) Easy to set-up. I already had my dish set up, so this wasn't difficult - the only thing was that the regular directtv people don't know all the steps on transferring my account from my old receiver over to the tivo box, but they have dedicated support people who know what to do.

Overall, this is just a very wonderfully well thought-through product. There were quite a few times when I first got it when I thought of something that would be convenient if it would do for me, and each time there was a way to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best TV Accessory Ever!!
I will make this short & sweet...this thing is amazing! It has truly changed our TV watching for the better.

Thank you, TiVo!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I own 4- They are great!
I don't generally write reviews, but after seeing some of the complaints you have posted, I decided to set things straight. I have owned 4 of these units for over 1 year and the only problems we ever had were caused by incompetent installers. When there is a problem, either your sales person or later, DirectV will replace the unit as long as you purchase a service plan. They all work beautifully, and they have completely spoiled my family. My teenage sons said, " Mom this is the best thing you ever bought". If you are not afraid to read directions, you will easily be able to run the software. No modems ever gave me trouble, nothing ran hot, everything is just as specified.

1-0 out of 5 stars When they work, they're great!
Like many of the other reviewers, I love the Tivo DVR's, the functionality is fantastic.
However, I have owned two DSR6000R machines for about 18 months and have had reliability problems with both. One has just failed, it resets itself every 10 minutes or so. The second one has never worked satisfactorily and been replaced under warranty by Philips with a refurbished machine which loops endlessly through the power up cycle.
When they work they are really great, but I really question the reliability of these Philips machines based on my experience and suggest you look at other models. Hope you have better luck than I have had. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars stopped working after 4 months
This dvd player stopped reading discs about four months after I bought it. It will only read a disc about once every 30 tries now and has started eating dvds. Not only does the laser fail to read the discs now, but the belt is also broken and the dvd fell off the tray and was damaged. And the other annoying part is that the VCR still works fine, so it seems a waste to scrap it altogether. You're better off having a separate dvd player, and certainly not a "daewoo" one. It may seem like a bargain, but believe me, it's not. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

With the Sony DNE-520 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player (Black), Sony extends the Walkman's leading reputation by offering several new features that allow you to have an even more user-friendly experience than ever while listening to your favorite CDs.

A 5-line negative/positive backlit LCD allows you to select the display properties of the LCD, providing a unique way to view track, title, album and artist information of ATRAC or MP3 CDs you're playing. Sony has also provided a highly intuitive file navigation system -- the new Vertical Jog Lever Control -- and a new digital amplifier that is much smaller, uses less energy to produce the same signal, and is 80 percent more efficient than traditional analog amplifiers. And to top it off, Sony's thrown in a new stylish custom carrying case and clip remote that can be clipped onto your bag or belt and fits naturally into your hand, allowing you quick and easy access to essential playback operations.

The player's Skip-Free G-Protection technology provides quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks, so hitting those unexpected pot holes or making sudden stops won't ever interfere with your listening while you're on the go. Playback options include 18 playback modes and a bookmark function that offers a wide array of listening choices, including hearing one track repeatedly, hearing a selection of tracks in a desired order, or listening to tracks randomly.

Compatible with Sony's ATRAC3plus technology, the Sony DNE-520 Walkman is loaded and ready to play the rewritable CDs of albums and tracks you download and burn from Sony's Connect Music Store. The player also comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

ATRAC3plus is Sony's high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space, and allowing you to burn up to 490 songs to a disc at 48 kbps.

Other features include Sony's Digital Mega Bass Sound, which produces rich, deep, bass tones with extremely low harmonic distortion; a five-direction control key, which means that you control five individual functions from a single button; a three-line LCD that provides fast and easy identification of track, title, album and artist information along the location of specific songs; and an automatic shut-off feature that powers the player down when it's not in use, helping to further conserve battery power.

About Sony Connect Music Store and ATRAC3plus
Sony's Connect Music Store (http://musicstore.connect.com) offers one of the most extensive music collections online. Customers can choose single tracks or entire albums from independent and major-label artists for purchase and download. Sony's proprietary ATRAC3plus is an advanced audio compression and Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology offering multiple bit rates, allowing you to create music compilations tailored to your listening preference with the ability to get up to 490 songs on one CD-R/RW disc at 48 kbps. Songs downloaded and burned onto CD-R/RW media using ATRAC3plus technology can be played on any device that supports ATRAC3plus.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice design, terrible sound quality
While the look and feel of this walkman is very nice, the sound quality was awful when wearing headphones. If I switched the audio output from "headphone" to the alternate feature which allows hooking up the player to a stereo, the sound was great, but then I couldn't work the volume. I will be returning this product and looking around for something better. I had high expectations of this product, and am very disappointed in this Sony product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect Player
In my opinion, this Player (MPD 720) is the very best Portable DVD Player on the market. The 7" screen is crystal clear and can be viewed very comfortably from 5 feet away. The speakers although lacking bass, are the best quality for any 7" player. If you arent satisfied with the speakers buy some portable ones at radio shack for $10-$20 and you'll have more sound than you need for a car, train or airplane ride. The unit seems to be very durable and it has never freezed or skipped while I have used it. It is extremely portable and user friendly. Since it comes with a battery, remote, car adapter and carrying case it is the best deal out there at $275.00. The case is awesome, it easily attatches to a car seat, has room for your unit, battery, charger, adapter wires, remote, headphones (not included) and 5-10 DVD's in sleeves. The case fits all that and still only weighs about 4lbs and is only 12" by 12". A flawless design by magnavox. With a product this perfect you have to look hard for flaws and I found 3. 1)The LCD screen has more resistence than you'd think to open it(not a big deal). 2)The buttons on the unit can't be tapped to work, you have to push down and hold them for a second. 3)When the unit is first loading/stopping a DVD it run's kind of loud but soon disappears once the movie starts. Other than that this unit is perfect. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

5-0 out of 5 stars PLAIN PERFECT
I bought this mainly for my 18 month old son who loves to watch Elmo DVD movies. After doing an extensive research on brand, price, accessories and comments, I decided to go with this DVD Player. NO COMPLAINTS HERE...I always go for branded names - since these companies work hard to get to where they are right now. I am very hard to please but this DVD Player pleases my son and I BIG TIME...

4-0 out of 5 stars Mintek player with a name change
I have compared the 8-inch Magnavox with the 7-inch 1770 model from Mintek and they are very similar. The switches and jacks are all in the same places, and the battery configuration is identical. The power switch is exactly the same. I suspect that Magnavox got their players from Mintek, then put their more recognizable name on them. Since Mintek is a very small company with no track record, you might want to check out their reviews before you buy this player. I've had the Magnavox for 2 weeks, and the Mintek for 2 months, and so far they both work fine. But when you buy a big name brand, you expect that it is more reliable than the unknown maker. In this case, I don't think that assumption is justified. That's the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

Offering strong video performance with a depth of less than 3 inches, Philips' high-definition-ready, active-matrix TFT LCD 15PF9936 is stylish enough and small enough for prominent placement in any room--or any wall--of your house. The 15-inch TV offers high brightness (450 cd/m2) and high contrast (400:1), as well as an integrated TV tuner for cable or broadcast reception of all your favorite programs. Its lightning-quick 16 ms response time guarantees seamless viewing even with rapid-screen-change video games. Hook it up to an optional DTV receiver or progressive-scan DVD player and you'll enjoy vivid, detailed images from 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources, which render at up to 720p resolution on the set's native 1,024 x 768 screen.

Philips' Dynamic Contrast technology optimizes the contrast of the picture by stretching the white, gray, and black levels.
LCD technology allows screens to be thinner and televisions to be lighter and more energy-efficient than ever before. The result is television that not only fits on a wall, but fits in places conventional televisions cannot. The 15PF9936's comes outfitted with Digital Crystal Clear III technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast and advanced, 10-bit processing. Further, the DCDi chip by Faroudja enhances resolution by eliminating the stair-step jagged edges often seen on progressive-scan displays.

The 15PF9936's three-line digital comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

A feature called Active Control continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction. AutoChron automatically sets the right time of day and maintains it with digital precision through brownouts, power failures, and even daylight savings time adjustments. AutoPicture lets you change--at the touch of a button--the picture settings (color, tint, contrast, etc.) for various types of programming, including sports, movies, multimedia (games), or weak signals.

AutoSound allows you to select from three factory-set controls and a personal control that you set according to your preferences. The three factory-set controls (Voice, Music, and Theatre) let you enhance the particular program you are watching. Incredible Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any two speakers, while the audio volume leveler (AVL) keeps the TV sound at an even level for a more consistent, comfortable sound.

Auto Color, one of the features of Active Control, measures the color content of the incoming signal and adjusts it according to predefined ideal values.

Inputs include two component-video (one HD and one standard-definition), one S-video, one RF coaxial audio/video, and two composite-video connections, as well as a VGA computer input with internal scaling, which accepts signals up to SXGA (1,280 x 1,024, from 56 to 85 Hz). A stereo analog audio output facilitates hookup with a surround receiver or integrated amplifier.

The supplied infrared remote control works your TV and other remote-controlled devices such as VCRs, DVD players, cable converters, and satellite receivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good experience
I purchased my Phillips thru Amazon and got the same set made in China that others have had problems with. I picked the set because of its compact size for a kitchen countertop. It has been a flawless performer and the picture is first rate. Others who have seen this set operate have purchased similar sets with no issues. While this is my first Philips set it will not be my last. Besides, try to find electronics not made in China or Taiwan these days!

1-0 out of 5 stars Screen Failure
My Philips 15PF9936 15" LCD TV is a dud. The screen worked for a brief time before dying on me. It's electric board was replaced and it worked beautifully for a whole twelve hours before blacking out and dying once more - I had good enough sound but no picture. Perhaps someone should inform Philips that Tvs are for viewing as well as listening. I am seeking a refund. I will not buy a Philips set again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Control
I bought and returned two samples of this set due to a failed screen. This occured in both sets after only two weeks of use. They are made in China and quality control is nonexistent. I bought the set because of the great features and it did have a good picture (while it worked) especially with Progressive DVD. This was my first purchase of a Philips TV and will be my last. After the second return, I purchased a Panasonic 14" and have had no trouble. The Panasonic has much higher quality of construction (made in Japan) and is very reliable. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Philips' 50-inch, perfectly flat 50PF9956 plasma television will grace your office or home-entertainment center with its state-of-the-art elegance and high-tech sophistication. The set's widescreen (16:9) dimension closely matches the orientation of your favorite movies. Hook it up with a progressive-scan DVD player or an HDTV set-top box/receiver and you'll be set to enjoy vivid, detailed images on the set's native 1,366 x 768-pixel screen. It's even configured for PC use, accepting inputs as high as 1,920 x 1,152i (at 50 Hz).

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile, which also makes it perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. The 50PF9956 offers an astronomical 3,000:1 contrast ratio for incredibly rich, deep blacks.

The 50PF9956 includes Digital CrystalClear technology, a suite of picture innovations including Dynamic Contrast, a comb filter, and advanced, 10-bit processing. A feature called Active Control Plus continually adjusts picture settings at over 60 times per second for all inputs, correcting both sharpness and noise reduction, even adjusting for changes in ambient viewing light.

Philips invented Digital Natural Motion to eliminate "juddering" effects visible in moving pictures. Digital Natural Motion estimates picture motion and corrects unintended movements in both broadcast and movie material (DVD), resulting in smooth motion reproduction and excellent sharpness.

Enjoy split-screen viewing through the set's 2 integrated NTSC tuners, which give you the ability to watch 2 different channels simultaneously. Includes picture-in-picture (3 sizes, free positioning), 3-PIP multiwindow Mosaic, and 8-PIP Mosaic.

Audio/video inputs include the latest direct-digital HDMI input (with a supplied HDMI-to-DVI adapter in case you're already outfitted for the other digital video connection) and a pair of high-definition component-video inputs, one of which includes H/V sync jacks for use with a PC. Composite- and S-video and RF coaxial inputs round out the connection types, though there's also a .125-inch stereo headphone jack for use with optional headphones.

A set of side-mounted AV inputs accommodates spontaneous hookups with camcorders or gaming consoles, and you can use the set as a center speaker in a surround array (1 center-channel input) while feeding a powered subwoofer with a dedicated subwoofer output.

Onboard Dolby Virtual Surround simulates enveloping surround sound from any 2 speakers, and the set's own pair is powered by a generous 15 watts per channel (x 2). The speakers use Philips' wOOx technology for stronger and higher-quality bass output than conventional TV speakers.

Amazon.com Product Description

Now you have a simple way to share your home videos with others, archive your most-treasured VHS tapes, and enjoy quality home cinema presentations on standard or high-definition televisions: Philips' DVDR600VR combination progressive-scan DVD player/recorder with built-in VCR. Schedule your TV recordings for either disc or tape and use the model's extensive inputs--including an i.Link digital video jack--to transfer and assemble camcorder footage or burn video from your PC to high-capacity DVD. The unit records up to 8 hours per disc side using either DVD+R or rewritable DVD+RW.

The DVDR600VR also features a disc manager that allows instant viewing of all recorded discs, storing contents details for up to 9,000 titles across up to 999 discs. You can also use the DVDR600VR like a VCR, burning televised programs directly to disc using VCR Plus+ simplified programming.

But the DVDR600VR is also a first-rate DVD player, featuring progressive-scan video outputs, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound passthrough, MP3 CD playback (CD-R/CD-RW), and compatibility with most DVD media (including video-mode DVD-R and DVD-RW).

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVDR600VR stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs.

Audio inputs consist of 2-channel analog jacks with 24-bit/96 kHz analog-to-digital conversion for DVD with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio compression (compression is non-defeatable).

As affordable as it is stylish, Philips' silver, 32-inch 32PT5441 puts the game right in your living room. It's more than a pretty screen, however. The set also boasts terrific features and convenient connections. A component-video input grants optimum connection with a compatible DVD player, while standard composite- and S-video inputs accommodate most other audio/video gear, from DVD players to satellite receivers, digital video recorders, video game consoles, cable boxes, and VCRs. 2-0 out of 5 stars OK set, annoying buzzing
I just purchased this Philips 20" flat screen television yesterday and I'm also returning it because of that annoying buzzing sound coming out of the back of the tv. Called Philips and their support response was to get it serviced....

The screen is nice and flat but when you actually look at the pixel pattern on the corners, you'll see it's flawed, with corners that bow inwards, and the top and bottom are not straight or true (and no tilt control to fix it either).

Don't waste your time.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Product is Defective
I've just found that the S-Video and the Audio/Video Input ports of this item are just defective; I tried to connect my panasonic DVD player to the TV, but this TV just couldn't read any signal. So I called the Philips technical support, and they only suggested me to return this to Target. This is really annoying because the TV is too bulky and heavy for me to carry around. I would say that Philips just doesn't have a good quality control because I had electronics from Sony and Panasonic, and they didn't show any defects like this. Since it doesn't work at all, I wouldn't recommend you buy this item unless you're really concerned about the price. I would rather stick to a dependable brand to save my time on returning items.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV for the money
I bought this TV for my bedroom about nine months ago, and I have never had the 'buzzing noise' problem that a few reviewers on this site have mentioned. If you purchase this TV and have that problem, I would definitely recommend that you exchange it for another one because THIS IS NOT NORMAL. Perhaps it was a problem with previous models that has since been fixed. I went into my local Target to shop for a TV because I knew I would get one there for a good price. Once I arrived, I took my time and picked out a few that I like based on aesthetics, and then I carefully examined the picture and sound on each one. There's just something about flat screen TVs versus traditional CRTs when it comes to visual quality. The clarity of the picture and color quality were far superior to any other TV that I saw, and for less than $200, the price was definitely right. The sound quality seemed good, too. I wrote the model number down, went home, and researched the TV online a bit more when I got home. I didn't hesitate at all when I came back the next day- I purchased mine, brought it home, and fired it up with a smile on my face. I haven't stopped smiling since- you really do get your money's worth with this TV. I've paired mine up with the new Philips DVP642 progressive scan DVD player (these are sold at Target also, but I don't see this product on the website), and the picture quality is astounding. The number of inputs on this TV allows you to hook up multiple s-video or regular A/V devices, and you can redirect your sound output to a stereo or receiver if you'd like. If you're in the market for a high quality small/medium sized TV for your bedroom or dorm room, this is the way to go. Five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars It stinx!
When I recieved this product, It was in good condition but broke 5 months later. Besides that, It was extremely ugly. I ou are going to spend this much on this bad of a tv, please get a different one.None of this was Target's fault.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality Picture
It's a nice design. Picture is as good, even better than some more famous brands. Great value. ... Read more
