Amazon.com Product Description The flatbed scanner provides up to 600 x 2,400 dpi maximum resolution and 36-bit color (256 levels of gray), with four one-touch buttons (scan to image, e-mail, OCR, file, and media card--Windows only) to help automate frequent tasks. The included software bundle helps you achieve the best scans and includes an OCR (optical character recognition) tool for scanning documents directly to text files. Copy speeds are as fast as 12 cpm for black and 10 cpm for color, while up to 99 copies can be made at once, freeing up your time for other tasks. Copies can be reduced or enlarged from 25% to 400% in 1% increments. The fax machine has a 3-second per page transmission speed and is capable of color faxing. It utilizes MH, MR, MMR, and JPEG (for color fax) fax coding methods. A fax memory of up to 480 pages ensures that you don't miss important faxes when you run out of paper, while the 100-entry speed dial, fax forwarding, and paging features provide added convenience. The remote retrieval function allows you to access your fax machine from outside the office, while a 150-location fax broadcasting feature sends multiple faxes from a single original. The MFC-3820CN has both USB 2.0 and Ethernet ports and also directly accepts Memory Stick, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and Secure Digital memory cards for convenient photo printing. You can access the media cards over a network. The MFC-3829CN has a footprint of 17.6 by 17.8 inches and weighs 23.1 pounds. Compatible with both Mac and PC, it also comes backed by a one-year limited warranty. What's in the Box Features Reviews (12)
Printing, Fax, Scanning, and copying are all as expected with output quality on par with other units in the $150-$400 range. However, it is its advanced functions that really make it shine. First, the MFC has a built in 10/100baseT server. Not just a print server but a server that will support both local network and internet based printing, faxing, and even FTP access to memory cards. Want to share your digital photos; just put your CF, SD, etc. card in the printer and have your friends FTP in and copy the files. Or, use a memory card to store other files that you want to make accessable via FTP. You can also do a lot of other interesting things like auto-forward faxes, store and forward on demand, broadcast, and so on. In all cases a Fax can be sent via normal phone line or via email depending on the 'address' you enter. One very cool feature if you have broadband is that by opening port 515 on your home router/firewall you can print to the Brother MFC from anyplace you have internet access. Print from a hotel, airport, friends house, work (as long as port 515 is not blocked), etc. Very cool. Also, the 20 sheet ADF is great for making copies or faxing larger documents while the flat bed scanner allows copy/fax of bound books, etc. One the down side: All in all this is a great all-in-one unit that has some great features that no other unit it its class has. For the price you can't go wrong!
PROS A ton of functions. CONS Ink cartridges don't last very long. Overall it is a good fax machine and decent sheet-fed scanner, but I would use it to print anything or copy because it eats ink like no tommorrow and the print quality and speed is not up to par with other machines you can get for the same price.
That said, as a scanner for archiving documents, this thing is the best I've seen. The document feeder is faster than the ones on much more expensive home- and small-office scanners from the likes of HP, and I have not yet been able to jam the thing. Using the 'fax' function but entering an e-mail address instead of a phone number, I'm able to dump bank statements, invoices, contracts and so forth into the document feeder and have TIFF or PDF versions of the documents show up in my e-mail inbox. So for archiving documents, I've got no drivers and no programs to worry about on my computer: as long as the network and the e-mail server are working, so is the scanner. There's still room for improvement with network scanning and printing, but to me the ability to e-mail documents directly from the thing has proved to be well worth the price.
Control panel: simple to use, all buttons are clearly marked. We did a lot of research and were undecided between this printer or the Canon MP730. As we already have a specialist photo printer, and didn't want to spend too much, we purchased the Brother for it's network capability - and am extremely happy with it. I can't stress enough how fantastic the network feature is! ... Read more

This one, (310) the print has faded and hardly legigible. Surely you have a resolution for this problem. I would appreciate someone to contact me at lbonville@excite.com and let me know.
You can solve the battery problem by buying the A/C adapter. Brother insists that only theirs, which is designed for this use, can be used safely. Whether true or not, I purchased the adapter for ... and it makes using the unit easier. I also purchased the molded carrying case, which keeps everything securely together. This system worked so well, that our Master Gardeners ordered 2 units and we use this machine exclusively to label all of our plants in our Display Gardens. The unit is very easy to use and provides permanent labels for any possible need.
Be advised that the refill tape cartridges are where Brother is making the big bucks (just like razor blades and inkjet cartridges). The unit is also less than frugal when it comes to batteries. Complaints aside, an easy to use product that works well. ... Read more

The print quality was very suprising for a laser in this price bracket. I was expecting a HP 1200 quality level, but it seems (to me) to be far better. As a former Office Max employee, I'm rather picky about printers, but this one fits the bill. High volume, speed, and low(er) per-page cost than most. Yes, it is noisy. About as loud as a Canon multi-pass doing its thing (read: you CAN hear it, but it's not excessively loud) To the people complaining about picture quality: It's a two hundred dollar laser printer. If you want pretty pictures but an inkjet. If you want volume and crisp text, buy a laser. If you want both, SPEND MORE MONEY. I know everyone wants the best on the market for peanuts, but that's not the way it works. TANSTAAFL. I have noticed the "power drain" issue as well. My lights do the "brownout" thing and my speakers hum. I also have a house that was built in 1952. If you read the UL label on the 5040 it lists the draw at 8.8A (incredible, but believe it) so be prepared with some good breakers. (comparison: I run two 21" Diamond Pro monitors on the same desk and the total draw between them is 3.4A) My overall opinion is this: I couldn't be happier. I've been eyeballing small lasers for about a decade now with a specific set of requirements in mind. High speed, good drum life, high-cap toners, half-ream paper tray, and parallel connection were the important ones. This printer fufills all those requirements AND fits nicely on the corner of my desk. Just gotta remember to shut off the lights before that big print job. ;)
I could not be more pleased. Easy to set up, superfast printing (my old laser was 12ppm), affordable replacement cartridges, small footprint.
Like the other inexpensive Brother laser printers, this one is a very good value, and has features of more expensive printers. It does have some cheap plastic parts, but this is to be expected in this price range. Other inexpensive laser printers look feel cheap in comparison. On the good side, the printer has the 250 page paper drawer located in a drawer under the printer, where it belongs. This way, you don't have an unsightly flop of paper on the desk in front of you. It also has a front door for feeding single sheets so you don't have to open the drawer and replace the paper, reset the paper guides, and so forth, simply to print a single envelope. It also pops printed paper out of the top into a proper paper recepticle. The printer is fast, at 17 pages per minute, and warms up fairly quickly so you don't have to wait too long for it to start. Print quality is good, and small fonts are legible with no bleeding. The grayscale for graphics is good, with nice even printing and little graininess. The biggest problem I have with this printer is that the drum and toner cartridge are replaced separately. This is not as much a problem as an annoyance. The printer drum has to be changed every 20,000 copies or so, and costs almost as much as the printer itself. The toner is inexpensive relative to other printers, but the drum is around $100. Despite having this unusual expense every four or five toner cartridges, the per page cost is still only about 1.5 cents per copy. This is comparable to other laser printers, and is significantly cheaper than inkjet printers. In comparison to inkjet printers, this laser will pay for itself in the first 5,000 to 10,000 copies. For a home or small office, this printer gives a lot of bang for the buck. Given the high quality of the black and white print, the low per page cost, and the speed, this printer is a steal.
It was easy to feed them through the manual feeder. I had to do it one at a time, but if you're on a budget, it beats paying for it to be professionally done (and hopefully, I'll only have to do it once in my life). It's also a very speedy printer and so manually feeding the hungry Brother was relatively painless. There was a tendency for envelopes to curl when they came out. It wasn't a problem after they had been stuffed. I believe that curling problems would happen with any laser printer since the paper gets heated up while being run through the feeders. The graphics for my maps were sharp in the "HQ 1200" mode and I did not have to purchase extra memory for it. Text was sharp in all modes. Paper would jam when I was dumb enough to try to feed paper, cards, or envelopes through the manual feeder that weren't completely flat. Unjamming was a piece of cake. I've also not had a problem with it being too loud. I don't keep it on all the time and I don't print while someone is trying to sleep. I've never experienced any high-pitched squeal that others have written about. The only criticism that I do agree with is that it takes a large amount of energy to operate. When I print, the lights start to dim and I turn off other energy guzzling appliances. But if you're the type that likes to blow-dry your hair with the microwave on while printing on a laser printer all at the same time, you might want to consider... a gas-powered microwave!... or... the "wet hair look!" To sum it all up, my printer works wonderfully and I was pleased that it did not exhibit some of the nasty things some of the reviews had mentioned. Good luck! ... Read more
