5-0 out of 5 stars properly tested
This is an awesome Reciever. The person who rated this with only two stars has no idea how to test a reciever of this caliber. I used a 7.1 channel Cambridge Soundworks speaker system to test this monster(T500's), also compaired it against a real reciever(Harmon/Kardon 525) and it did more than advertise. The seven seperate powered channels alone speak for themselves(which no other company makes).

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SYSTEM KICKS ...!!!
This is Onkyo's best product for the price and it doesn't disapoint! THX only gives certification to the best built recievers which usually cost serveral thousands of dollars. I have this one and love it. In order to maximize the benefit of this system you have to hook up a decent speaker system. I used Bose direct/reflect system and makes for a 'theater like' experience. This unit is worth every cent!!

2-0 out of 5 stars blah
Did a side-by-side comparison at home with my old Yamaha DSP-A1 (which is Dolby Pro-Logic only) and I honestly didn't hear any improvement over the Yamaha after about a week of watching THX certified DVDs on a Sony Elite player with very good Paradigm speakers (7 speaker configuration for Onkyo, 5 for Yamaha). Actually I preferred the Yamaha which had a warmer and richer sound. The Onkyo is going back to Circuit City this week. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Read These Reviews 18 Months Ago!
You can add my name to the list of "victims" on this product! I also bought this DVD Player 18 months ago as part of a Home Theater system which included the Onkyo TX SR600 Receiver/Amp and the fantastic Bose Acoustamass 15 speakers. No complaints on the receiver or speakers, but the DVD player started acting up after 12 months and has now just quit altogether. It lights up but can't get the drawer to open. I found all of these negative reviews while researching a replacement, which I guarantee will NOT be another Onkyo.

1-0 out of 5 stars avoid like the plaque
Echoing the woes of previous reviewers, I add the story of my experience with this DVD player. I bought it as part of a home theater package with the TX-SR600 receiver and speakers. The receiver and speakers have worked fine, but this DVD player stopped working after 14 months of extremely light use (1 DVD or CD played a week or less). This DVD player now gives a "disc error" for any CD or DVD I put in. I'll have to add this one to the growing cemetary for Onkyo DVD players as the 1 year warranty is over and it will probably cost more to fix it than get a new DVD player from another company.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor reliabilty and Poor service
I bought this DVD player as part of an Onkyo home theater package. The other components work well, but I've had the same problems as others listed here -- it finally quit working completely 13 months after purchase. Onkyo's authorized service center claimed it was due to abuse (not!) and refused to honor the warranty. In addition, the national service center drug their feet, didn't return phone calls, lost multiple faxes of my receipt - it took over a month for them to tell me they weren't going to pay to fix it, while there were DVD rental disks trapped inside!!

I've owned Onkyo products for 13 years, but my replacement DVD player won't be another Onkyo. Very unhappy with their Service Center and authorized repair center.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the CP500 with caution
I thought this would be a good value - lots of features for a lower price...but the performance issues are not worth the trouble. Consistant with other reviews here, my CP500 is very slow to react to commands (Start/Stop/Open tray etc.). It also stopped playing most CDs (both store bought and burned), just spins for a long time and returns a "Disk Error". I wish I'd have paid more (paid $200 in Jan 2003) for a better DVD; I'll probably never buy an Onkyo again, we'll have to see how they honor their warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never buy ONKYO
After 1 year my ONKYO DV-CP500 will not even open the tray. This will be the last ONKYO product that I ever buy. PLEASE avoid this product at all cost, it sucks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars onkyo 797 is awesome home theatre piece
used to power a high end mission stereo system in 5.1. sounds great with music and home theatre. i have expecially loved the all-stereo mode and dolby Pro-logic II for movies.

all around recommended by someone who has previewed over a dozen receivers in past 3 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best for the price
After doing a ton of research to find the right receiver for me, I decided on this one - in favor of the competing Denon and Harmon Kardon receivers.

Onkyo gets 5 out of 5 for the feature set. Onkyo certainly did its homework before developing this piece of amazing hardware. This receiver can handle almost any audio format available today (Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, DTS-ES 6.1) and has several DSP features like Dolby PL II, Neo:6, and more.

This receiver has connectivity features that would satisfy even the demanding users. It has more than enough video (S-Video as well as component video) and audio inputs, including one for turntables! Further, 3 optical digital audio inputs, 3 coaxial digital audio inputs and 1 optical digital output make sure that you can connect every device to it using the digital connectors.

It also features pre-outs for all 7.1 channels, which makes it easy to upgrade your home theater system, should you wish to move on.

The built-in amps are powerful with 100 watts per channel (100 x 6 watts) with 8 ohm speakers (the most usual speaker impedence). This should be sufficient for most medium sized rooms upto about 300 sq feet (assuming you like to listen real loud).

Sound quality is amazing, and it works its magic equally well on 2-channel as well as multi-channel sound inputs. Being THX-certified, you would have high expectations with its sound and picture quality, and take my word for it, you will not be disappointed!

The superior OSD is clear and very easy to navigate through. The remote control is a bit large, but its capabilities are amazing. The remote is lighted and has functions for programming macros and for programming individual buttons from buttons on other remote controllers.

All in all, this THX-certified receiver has all that any home theater aficionado could ask for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Price
I'm a raw audiophile.

My "music" system has no remote(creates motor noise)
straight pre-amp, cd, Amp.
ALL my components cost more than this whole system easily.
(even my speaker wires cost almost as much.)
In fact I got rid of my Yamaha dolby ProLogic Reciever
years ago when I bypassed my receiver straight into amp and
realized how the rec. with all the processing RUINED the quality
of sound out of the CD player. That's what sold me on quality
and simplicity.

I know good sound when I hear it.

However, I watch more movies again and I was getting sick of sound through the TV speakers. My current speakers are not magnetically shielded and I don't have enough room to avoid interference with my older TV(35in. tube). So I looked around and found a number of good reviews on Onkyo Home Theater Systems (HTS's).
I wasn't looking for perfection just better than what I had.

My experience also sold me on this system because I know goofy looking(some Panasonic, Sony, etc.) and small speakers either sound bad or cost a fortune(Bose). Larger speakers like these require much less SPECIALIZATION allowing for OFF THE SHELF speakers and boxes. Therefore you get better sound for less money. If size is VERY important better SEE these speakers before buying.

Now my review. Even with cheaper speakers than I had 6-7 years ago. I'm really impressed with the newer digital surround formats WOW! so much better than old ProLogic. The separation of the rear speakers(not MONO anymore) really makes a big difference. You also get much better channel separation. The receiver is decent quality and the remote is OK. I'll be using the Famous Sony 2100 universal remote instead(when I program it)
Remember not ALL DVD's use true Dobly Digital. Check the box and the audio options. Also the reciever does not alway shift to digital "EX" by itself.

The REAL issue though are the speakers. The rears are fine. The fronts pretty good. But as usual the center is lacking. Why they didn't just give you another front I don't know. They are almost the same size anyway. The sub appears to be sufficent. It is rather boomy.(not surprising for the price) I heard another guy who put some fiber fill inside and that took care of it. Make sure to get speaker stands they(fronts)will sound better at ear height.

If you are expecting really "good" sound; look elsewhere.
If you want pretty good sound and excellent upgrade to the new surround formats this is it. Most people will be very happy with the sound.

You WILL have to buy a coaxial or optical line for digital use from the DVD player.
And PLEASE replace the horrible speaker wire(22-gauge) they give you. You WILL get better sound if you replace them. Also replace the sub mono RCA wire with better wire.(this is some of the stuff you deal with for the great price)

ALL the speakers use basic spring clips(bare wire). I recommend putting banana plug ends(buy the better ones; trust me) on the receiver side of the speaker wire. Just push then in the back center hole of each terminal post(incredibly easier).

The best thing about this system is that it is a "separates" system. So you can replace EACH piece for better components if and when you choose to.

If I have quality problems I'll be sure to post. Good luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Electronics - but speakers rot
My selection of the Onkyo HT-S760 was swayed by two factors. First, the generally good customer reviews and my recollection of Onkyo's reputation for quality component design. After a very easy setup session (the supplied speaker cables are not useful except for smalish rooms) I inserted a favorite, special effects filled, DVD expecting great things and then stunned disbelief!! I've heard better sound coming from my old "build your own crystal radio" set, especially poor at lower volume levels. Forget music CD's unless you're just looking for background noise while cooking dinner.

I had no real problems with the receiver's design or feature set other than the omission of at least one Digital (Optical) output, (they give you optical inputs only)

I was replacing a middling good audiophile (20 year veteran) quality system that had seen better days and figured the state of speaker design must have progressed leaps and bounds in that time but I've been sadly mistaken on this point. My recommendation is ratchet your expectation levels down a notch or two before installing this bad boy. Rank this with the $299 Home Theater units you can get at any local appliance store..

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I have been into home theater since the days of HI-FI stereo, Beta VCR's. I graduated to Dolby Surround, and then Pro Logic. And at one point I probably had $3000 invested into my system. Then I got married and had kids, and traded the big stereo for a mini- system. I have also had the experience of working for a large local electronics retailer part time for the last few years when I needed a little extra cash.

So when I decided to upgrade my home theater system, I started reading. I wanted the most bang for the buck, and from everything I read, I felt that this system was the way to go. But we never carried it at the store where I worked. And do you know why? They felt that the product was way too good for only $500, and would limit their ability to sell, separate component systems, at much higher prices.

They never had a problem carrying and selling other HTIB's, because none of them could compare to a nice component system. Some sound ok for movies, but most fall short in the music department. So if you wanted a system good for movies and music, you bought separates.

Well, I went over to the local Circuit City, and bought one of these without even listening to it in the store. I also bought the Onkyo 6 disk DVD player (DV-CP701). Then I hopped over to the Shack and bought some 16ga. mega cable(way better value than monster cable), and a nice sub cable and digital coax cable, and headed for home.

Now, I don't know how Onkyo did it, but you could not assemble a component system for double or even triple the cost of this one, that sounds this good! I put in the pod race from Phantom Menace, and I was grinning from ear to ear the whole way through. I was amazed! After cranking up a few more of my favorite movie sound scenes, I threw in some Luther Vandros for my wife. I put the receiver in DTS Neo:6 music mode, and I felt like Luther was standing in my living room.

Now I'm not trying to say there is not better stuff out there, because there is. But if you want the best for the money there is no comparison. You just have to remember to take the time for proper setup, and I promise, you will be amazed. And to any of you negative reviewers out there who say the sound is not up to par, I don't know where you are coming from?

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop looking for an entry level HTS - this is it!!!
This is hands down the best bang for your buck. I would challenge anyone to find a better system for this money.

There are enough inputs to cover all your needs. I have my DVD player, TV and xbox all hooked up.

Step by Step Review:

Components:
You won't get a better set of inputs/outputs for this money. 6 speakers that are adequate for 99% of us normal users. Subwoofer is powered on its own and good enough to handle most requirements.

Setup:
Its easy to setup. I had the entire system setup in less than half a day. Color co-ordinated wires with the speakers. Easy to follow instructions to setup each component.

Use:
The remote is busy but is easy to use. Nothing complicated here.

Sound Quality:
Great sound, it may not meet the needs of those who want professional sound (those people are better off spending the 2k-5K to get a full quality compenent system) but it is good enough that I can't find faults. I would recommend buying better speaker wire as you will notice the difference.

Misc:
I love the ability to use digital audio connections! And the price... c'mon can you find a better HTS for this cost.

Buy this system and enjoy home theater sound during sports and movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Home Theater System
This is my first full home theater system and I've been very happy with it. The price isn't too outrageous for a system of this quality.

There are plenty of A/V inputs on the receiver, including 2 component video inputs for high definition sources (Digital Cable, DVD, X-Box, etc.) and three digital inputs (2 optical, one coaxial). Also, all of the video inputs have s-video connections which is a plus. Of course you can rarely have too many connections and I've already had to settle with what was given. My one complaint concerning connections is the lack of a digital output which is desirable for recording with CDs, DVDs, and minidisc.

I've been very pleased with the output of the speakers included. I'm not exactly and audiophile but I can tell low quality from high and these are high quality speakers for a system at this price. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the speaker cables could be a higher quality and a bit longer though. Also the rear speakers are bigger than many other home theater systems but you'll have to decide if that's a problem based on the size of your room

The receiver's abilities are superb. Dolby Digital and DTS support plus DSP modes for stereo sources is great. Movies sound awesome and music is great as well.

Finally, setup is easy thanks to color coded cables. The remote control works great even with other components (TVs, VCRs, DVD, etc.). ... Read more
