5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent value
This is a very high quality receiver with ample inputs/outputs (4 S-video inputs; 3 assignable (2 optical, 1 coax.) digital audio inputs) and great audio capability, including Dolby Pro II -- an improvement over original that you can actually hear. DVDs with Dolby Digital or DTS produce amazingly good sound on this system, although subwoofer can be a little boomy. Note that these speakers are unusually large compared to similar priced home theater systems. Check sizes if you have limited space or prefer less intrusive electronics. (Whole system comes in a single box that's about the size of -- and weighs about as much as -- a medium size refrigerator.) I looked a long time and didn't find a system (or individual components for that matter) that provided combination of quality, features and price as the HT-S650.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Package
Onkyo has been known for their strong home theater recievers and there speakers. The HT-S650 is a strong package with good quality features. The Onkyo reciever delivers 100 watts to each channel with built in Dolby Pro-Logic 2 (For VHS movies) Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. With its WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology), this reciever is built to last. It's Inputs and outputs include S-Video, Optical Digital, and a 5.1 Channel input (For DVD Audio and SACD). The Onkyo speakers sound great. The Front Speakers are Magnetically Shielded so the speakers are strong and give out good quality sound. The Center and Surround speakers are well balanced with 4" woofers and 1" balanced tweeter. The subwoofer has a built in 150 watt amplifier with an 8" long-throw woofer, so you'll be sure that you're getting deep bass. The package also includes a remote for the reciever, speaker cables, and an instruction booklet. Even though it doesn't come with a DVD player, its still a great system for people who are new in the home theater world or just for people who like to upgrade their small systems. Great Value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this while you ponder your perfect system
I've had this system since Christmas and I am very pleased with what I've got. Realistically, for the money you can't expect too much more. It doesn't have sci-fi styling or miniature speakers but it does have decent sound, a rich feature set, and good build quality.

Some people view the lack of a DVD player as a drawback, but frankly, with good players available for a C note, I really did not want one thrown into the package. I'd rather Onkyo use that money to give a little more, and I think that's what they've done.

Sound quality is good all round and, unlike some satellite speakers, not missing midrange. I also like the fact that I can convert a stereo signal into surround sound. My only gripe here is that the bass is a little boomy at times even though my subwoofer dial is set below the halfway point. Not good for certain music but no complaints when watching action movies.

While the kit comes complete with wires for every speaker, they are the bare minimum in quality. Budget yourself another couple hundred (depending on how many sources you plan to plug in) for decent speaker cables and especially inter-connects like S-video and digital audio. The improvement is significant and well worth it.

Functionally, I've only found 3 things that annoy me:
1. Insufficiently shielded main L/R speakers distort colors on my TV.
2. The back panel is cramped (what do you expect?) it's hard to feed the speaker wires into the connectors for the right sets, especially if you switch to cables thicker than what's provided.
3. The identifiers chosen (i.e. DVD, CD, TAPE, VIDEO1,2,3) need updating. I play MP3's from computer and there isn't even an AUX slot for the connection. Instead I have a choice of TAPE or VIDEO1,2 or 3. To this day I still have to think about which button on the remote to press for MP3 music.

My favorite features are:
1. VIDEO3 inputs on the front panel, making it easy to connect/disconnect a video camcorder or the occasional video game
2. Powers a second set of speakers (stereo only). Unfortunately, when both A and B speakers are selected, you get downgraded to stereo for the main speakers too.
3. Sleep shut-off timer

If you need a reasonably priced, no hassle, solid performer for the long term, or just something that will do the job while your ultimate home theater wish list is being fulfilled, this Onyko's for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the price and features, there is no better buy!!!!
This system sounds amazing!! Better than many others I have heard. I really like that this receiver will switch the sound and the image on the TV with the same button press, as opposed to have to change the sound on the receiver, and then the video setting on the TV. The remote also controls the TV, VCR and DVD player (other brands too), so it has also helped reduce the remote clutter with more functionality. I still need a remote for CATV and I still overlap with the VCR remote for programming the VCR. The DVD remote capabilities are great, menus and everything. The TV, DVD and old stereo remotes are now in a box. I have my old all-in-one stereo plugged in to the new receiver to use the CD changer (optical input) and tape player. The receiver has a connection for the Onkyo cassette player, so eventually I will get that to reduce remote usage. Other brands of DVD/CD changers probably will work fine, but since Onkyo is so good, I'll probably stick with the brand. I also have the transmitter for my cordless Advent headphones plugged into the secondary speakers, so by pressing a button I can turn the sound on to them (and off to the main speakers if I so desire). Also, I am planning on getting cordless speakers that work with the same transmitter so that I can have the sound in my bedroom or on the deck.

This package is the best. If you buy the receiver and the speakers separately, ...so it is already a savings to buy together.

One disadvantage is that the receiver doesn't have component video (only S-Video and regular composite) as does the next Onkyo model TX-SR600, but that receiver alone is the same price as this package with excellent speakers.... My current TV doesn't have component video, but when I get one, I will have to either upgrade the receiver or connect the component video from the DVD directly to the TV and change the TV setting. For the price you can't go wrong.

The usage is very simple once it is all hooked up. Hookup on the other hand is a little bit tricky, I invested in an extra composite video to S-Video converter to connect the VCR to the S-Video input so that the TV could remain set up as S-Video and not have to change TV settings. I strongly recommend hooking up all the components in almost every way possible (although redundant) for more flexibility. There are two outputs for S-Video and for composite video, which are kind of confusing, just try it out, I couldn't get everything to work the way I wanted it on one of the outputs, but using the other one worked fine. The volume from digital cable is higher than from my DVD, I yet have to figure out if I can change that. When using the digital audio inputs, there are pre-defined configuration selections. These selections can be modified by programming the receiver to use different audio inputs for the various components, and it is quite simple, once you read the manual (yeah, needed to read it!).

I did get Monster cables and although the system will receive analog audio and work wonders with it, using the digital audio inputs is much more amazing!! I can feel the Star Wars Episode I space ships fly by and hear the sound of the bullet in Spiderman bouncing off things in the same direction that the robber on the movie fired the shot.

2-0 out of 5 stars sounds ok but
I purchased this HT about 4 months ago and have just had the second sub-woofer go out. I live in the country and don't have to worry about complaints from neighbors. I like to listen at elevated levels especially during movies. During certain movies the sub will start to rattle violently and by the time I get it turned down it is toast. I would not recommend this HT if you like to push the performance. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

For discerning audiophiles and anyone seeking high quality and home theater convenience, Onkyo's high-value TX-SR701 6.1-channel surround receiver features thunderous power, the latest surround-processing abilities, and a suite of high-end features like digital bass management for multichannel DVD-Audio and SACD music sources, sophisticated video conversion and switching capabilities, and multi-room flexibility, including Onkyo's Powered Zone 2.

People new to home theater will find relief in the receiver's user-friendly design, which uses color-coded inputs and outputs, a logically laid-out front panel, and an easy-to-use, preprogrammed/learning remote control. Those looking to upgrade their current home theater receiver will be impressed with the receiver's six, high-current channels (100 watts per channel) and processing for all major surround formats, and then some, including Dolby Digital EX (6.1) and DTS-ES.

Onkyo's Powered Zone 2 capability can be used to power stereo speakers in a second room as well as in the main zone, thanks to a dedicated set of zone 2 L/R speaker terminals. The receiver is capable of processing separate stereo sources simultaneously for each zone, or sending the same signal to both. There's also a set of zone-2 preamplifier outs that can be used in conjunction with an external power amplifier.

The TX-SR701's 5.1-channel analog input includes sophisticated bass management capabilities, which can be critical for enjoying high-resolution DVD-Audio and SACD with a multichannel speaker system. Incoming signals are digitized and then processed by the receiver's DSP to route low-frequency information to a subwoofer while excluding deep bass from small satellite speakers that are not meant to handle deep bass. The subwoofer crossover is selectable at 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz for optimal integration with any speaker arrangement. This feature can also be bypassed with Onkyo's exclusive Pure Audio Mode for the ultimate in analog signal fidelity when with full-range speakers.

Further, Onkyo includes a number of exclusive audio-enhancing features and technologies, like discrete output stages, high-bandwidth WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and a reduced-NFB (negative feedback) amplifier design.

The TX-SR701 handles a range of audio and video sources, from front-panel audio/video/S-video jacks for simple hookups with camcorders, game consoles, and VCRs, to multiple rear-panel inputs. Rear connections include 2 high-resolution component-video inputs and a set of multichannel RCA analog inputs (perfect for use with a DVD-Audio or SACD player's high-resolution analog outputs). You also get 4 digital-audio ins (3 optical, 1 coaxial) and 2 digital-audio outs (1 each optical and coaxial) for connections with DVD players, a satellite receiver, a CD recorder, MD recorder, or other gear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only receiver on the market with a Phonograph Pre-Amp
I am a huge audio file and a fan of Onkyo. I have had an Onkyo TXSV515ProII for a long time that was a super receiver until it died recently. With a new receiver I pretty much had my mind made up to get a new Onkyo but I compared others just to make sure I was getting the best choice. I looked at Dennon, Harmon Kardon and Yamaha and none of them compared to the Onkyo for features and sound quality. Unfortunately, Onkyo has also grown to be a little more expensive than these other choices. At the three stores I went to, to comparison shop the sales people seemed upset that I was even considering buying anything but an Onkyo. (Each sales person I talked to, personally owned an Onkyo also) The only thing I liked better about the others was the styling of the Onkyo is getting very dated. In fact, I took the feet off my old receiver and put them on the new one to jazz it up a bit. This receiver has connections for everything you have and will likely have, including phonograph input. I have mine connected with two VCRs, a cassette tape player, DVD/Laserdisc player through the component inputs, HDTV receiver connected to the fiberoptic input, digital recorder through the fiberoptic output, and also, phonograph player. This receiver is also THX 6.1 receiver and I have the full set up of speakers three surround speakers, two fronts, center and subwoofer. I also have rock speakers outside connected to the zone 2 speaker output. There are also pre-outs for the zone two speakers and a 12V DC control output to work with Niles Audio speaker switch. This way you could wire up your whole house with speakers. I have used every single feature on the receiver and am very pleased with the sound. Like my old Onkyo this handles all video switching and you can dub tapes from one source to another by selecting different inputs. I read some complaints on other sites about the volume knob. It is not linear like you would expect it to be. Between 0 and 50 on the volume knob it does not get very loud but after 60 it gets very loud quickly. This is done so that you have a wider range of control for low volume where you listen to it most. I would have bought the TXSR601 which has features more analogous to my old receiver but this one has a phonograph input. And now that I got it all the other features that this has over the 601 make me feel better about spending nearly twice as much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great home theatre and great hi fi sound
This amp is amazing, from the remote which is large I'll admit but unlike most universal remotes, IT WORKS and is so easy to program. It has so many inputs and outputs that you will never fill them all. The sound is awesome and it has enough power drive any speakers hard.

Pure audio function is for all of you who want home theatre but still want good stereo hi fi sound. This mode shuts down everything in the amp which is not required to produce stereo sound. ie, video processors, 6 channels of the sound, the power supplies that are not used and even the LED supply.

The hifi sound is incredible it truly allows "audiophiles" to have their cake and eat it to.

It has massive weight to it at 20kg so make sure you have somewhere stable for it and don't stick it on top of your VCR.

It has a huge array of digital in's and out's even on the front for your hand held digital camera.

Its speaker and sound setup takes about half hour from start to finish if you are in any way competent.

It has a great feature where buy you can actually select the recording input or sound input for any device. Meaning you can watch a video on one VCR while recording a DVD to your second VCR without effecting you picture or sound output from the 898.

My only gripe about it is the way that all amps that are going to be sold in Europe no longer take banana plug inputs. Which means that you need to use the pin type plugs but on most AV units there are so many speaker outputs that they cluster them together and allow no space to use any connectors, so you end up having to buy "gold tails" or go back to the archaic method of simple bare wire.

It seriously rocks but make sure that you have some serious speakers or the money will be truly wasted. [....]

2-0 out of 5 stars Run away from it !
I never thought I would say that about a Onkyo product. But this is a very dissapointing equipment. Sure, it's great to have a 6-disc changer at home, specially with wife and kids all wanting to watch different things. The sound is good and the remote easy to use. Them comes the pictures. It has a major, and from what I could see in other reviews around the net, tint problem. The picture gets extremely green. No matter how much you adjust the DVD or the TV, you allways see the "greeness" in everything. The jpeg compatibility is awfull. A picture takes almost 30 seconds to load. And despite all those problems, I live outside the US and can't return the player for anothe one. It seems like Onkyo has just released a DV-CP702 model, exactly the same as this one, but fixind those bugs. So, if you get a chance to buy this model, don't, you'll regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Player
Today I went to Bose in Pioneer Place and try the DVD player. I was watching Star Wars Episode 1 and the pictures worked good. This player also supports audio CDs and MP3 CDs. But I don't know if it supports CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I also liked the OSD display on the screen. The employee told me if I want to resume the movie, I have to press stop or pause on the remote and not pressing the power button on the player, or else I will have to start the movie all over again. If I don't press any buttons, then the player will shut down by itself, and if you press the power, then the play button, it will resume the movie you are playing. The price is a little bit high. But I maybe buying it during the summer or at the end of the summer. Because I have a summer job. And I'm 16 years old. This player takes a few seconds to load any discs. And I will buy 2 Mary Kate and Ashley DVDs after I got the player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
This unit has been harshly judged on some of the other electronics web sites. I have used the player for about a week now. The sound quality is first rate using the Burr Brown DAC. I am also satisifed with the progressive scan video quality. I just have not expereinced the problems that others have mentioned. The only weakness was in the area of jpg playback. For under 200 dollars this player is great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Onkyo DVCP701 refurbished
I bought the refurbished player with 1 year warranty for $99.
The picture is wonderful and sound blows you away. This player will also play DVD+RW (not mentioned in specs) and my SVCD movies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!
Bought this system, on recommendation, in June 2003. System developed a "popping" sound and would shut itself down. By the beginning of August 2003, I finally got the replacement system and the same problem occurred two months later - October 2003. Since Novemeber 2003, I have been contacting Onkyo, by email & faxing, to have this system replaced, and they have not responded to me. To me, a bad system and bad customer service means a bad company. It is now April 2004 and I still have this broken down system sitting in the corner of my bedroom!

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of DVD player
I purchased the set 11/02. I have been very pleased with the speakers, receiver and remote. The 5-disc DVD carousel worked well initially, but within 6 months began occasionally giving "Disk error" with some CDs and DVDs. Othertimes, the DVD carousel drawer would inexplicably open when I was just selecting a different disk already loaded. Finally, one month out of the 1-yr. warranty, the DVD player broke completely, trapping 5 disks inside. Onkyo dragged their feet allowing the unit to be examined, and finally claimed it was my abuse that caused it. I have owned Onkyo stereo components for 13 years, but will never buy them again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
If you don't want the hassle of buying a 5 disk(CD+CDRW+DVD+DVDRW) progressive scan player, a receiver set, a speaker set, cables and then think about compatibility issues yet want a great product, this is the ideal product! Been using it for the past 6 months. Great sound quality, tons of options and customization, easy setup, and playes mp3 too!

1-0 out of 5 stars Zero recommandation
I purchased one about 4 moths ago...
For first month it worked great. However as time goes by, there is a problem with playing DVD and CD.
First time slot #3 and #4 didn't work. Right now all 5 slots do not work at all. It always shows 'disk error' whenever insert DVD or CD. I guess there is a problem with alignment between turn table and reader.
Also, their repair shops are located far a way from my house. Even I live in San Jose, there is none repairing shop. So I need to drive at least one hour to get free repair.
Over all I do NOT like this product at all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Upper Middle Class receiver
From my experience in testing receivers and listening to sound, this receiver kicks butt.
I have bought and tested the following in my home:
HK AVR520
Marantz SR7200
Onkyo TX-SR700
Yamaha RX-V1300

They are all great receivers and depending on your sound preference and speakers you might choose a different receiver. But for my setup (bose speakers), I just love the Onkyo.
Please let me know your thoughts if you own this receiver or have heard it. ... Read more
