5-0 out of 5 stars MUCH Better! "HIGH-PWR" is RIGHT!!
I bought this card to use with a CompUSA brand wireless router on my home network. Both computers on the network are using WinXP Home Edition.

I've tried Netgear, a lesser SMC card, and Trendware wireless cards with my Sony PCG-FX290 laptop (1GHz,256MB,40GB) and while they all worked, they were very inconsistant in their signal strength and worked only in select areas of my home. THIS CARD WORKS OUTSIDE MY HOUSE!!

Install the drivers first, reboot with the card in the PCMCIA slot. The signal strength may be non-existant until you double click on the signal icon and check the status and configuration. I clicked 'RESTORE DEFAULTS' and rebooted my machine... now it's up and running. About a 10 minute or less setup, strong signal and XP recognized it just fine. XP may ask you during installation if you want to use 'unathorized or unverified' certificates... say OK... and move on.

So far... so good. Don't hesitate to buy this card if you want easy setup with an excellent signal right out of the box.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problems (now) with Windows XP
I've had a wireless network for over a year but the signal strength of my connection has always been poor once I get very far from my router so I thought I'd try this card.

It's great.

I did have some initial problems with it and my router despite following all the directions in their manual. I called SMC's technical support line though and got great help.

Turns out that with my Windows XP SP 1 system, despite directions and suggestions to the contrary, the High Power Utility software that comes with the card caused problems. On my system. While I could see that I had a strong connection between the card and the router the card could not reliably get an IP address back from the router. After uninstalling everything - the utility and driver, and then just installing the driver - no High Power Utility - my Internet connection started working! Reliably.

I can go all over our house and yard and get a good strong signal. It's amazing.

The card works and the support I got from SMC, while I wish I had not needed it, was wonderful.

5 stars!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad to boast
I had Netgear WT511 card, it worked well in the house but not far from outside the house. Then I read a lot about SMC high power card and bought one, you know what I cannot connect even from within house. Then I checked the signal intensity, Netgear has 50% but SMC only has only 30%. What a terrible card!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional performance!
Great card with good range. I've been using it for four months now and have had no problems so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the extra $30
I bought this card after reading the favorable reviews here. Installation was, as observed, uneventful. The same couldn't be said for my old SMC2635W. The stronger signal seems to make a real difference when it comes to stability of the connection. Gone are the occasional hiccups during streaming video.

There's one annoying thing I've encountered though. The stronger signal manages to get through my laptop's shielding so that whenever there's heavy data transfer, the speakers give out this little scratching noise. Well, at least I can HEAR I'm getting my money's worth! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good at all
I am using SMC products since last 1.5 years,I was satisfied with all other SMC products, but not this.
Reason:
- Its just running @ 2MPBS speed, thought my router is supporting 11 MPBS.
- I called customer support, they are confuse too, asking all networking stuff to do again & again, but no luck. (SMC customer support is always better than N'gear & D'link)
- I dont know what to do with this 65 USD baby?
-also the size in the pictures look small, but its not real, size is larger than thumb drive.

Otherwise, i hv good exp. with SMC products only this makes me crazy, but thats OK ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to set up
By comparison with the experience I had with a similar product by Linksys, this baby was up and running in no time. I set it up in a Windows XP machine and it was a breeze to get up and running. One piece of advice (I learned it the hard way): don't expect this technology to go be able to go through metal doors. It just will not happen. Other than that, in a more "normal" setting, it should perform just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine, though WEP UI regressed.
I have an SMC7004AWBR router (by the way, the 1/23/03 SMC firmware upgrade finally fixed the router dropout problems). I bought the SMC 2402W wireless PCI card and installed it with no problems on a Win ME box. Reception was good- different floors of the house, about 75 feet away. Since the router is only 11mbps, I can't take advantage of the 22mbps until I upgrade the router.

For some reason, the included software configuration utility does not allow you to generate any WEP key using a passphrase- you have to enter the key manually. Since I used a passphrase to generate my existing WEP key, I didn't know what my WEP key was, so I had to go back to my router (and each wireless PC) as well to manually re-create the key. If you change your WEP key a lot this would be a nuisance. I contacted SMC email support, and though they were quick to respond, they had nothing useful to say on this matter.

Note also that this card supports 256 bit WEP keys, though my router doesn't. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars EZ Connect Turbo a scam
This network card should be called NEVER CAN CONNECT UN-EZ TURBO. From the first time I loaded the driver to the last time I want to load the driver, after speaking countless hours to the smctechsupport, I wasn't able to get this junk working. The connection is very unstable. The 1133 feet connection is a joke. I moved 5 feet from the router and my signal becomes..LOW, and don't even try to move further than that, because you will loose your signal. My recommendation- DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT, and pass this along to your friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars v3.0 drivers = constant loss of connection
Where's the ZERO stars selection?? -- I was at first satisfied with this card along with the matching SMC2404WBR 11/22 router.

However after upgrading the drivers from 1 to 2 to 3.0 in order to fix previous problems as other posters have stated, I too had numerous problems as enumerated below:

1-In 3 different laptops (2 IBM, 1 HP) after a period of time, the connection is lost and then you are presented with a pop-up stating "One or more wireless connections are available". If you click to connect, it tries to connect, then you are dropped instantly and represented with "One or more wireless connections". (Mind you I only have ONE wireless router ever showing) The ONLY fix is to both reset the router AND to power down (not just warm boot) the notebook. Configuring the router with DHCP and without, with WEP and without, etc.. doesn't fix this. This problem started appearing after 2.0 and 3.0 driver revisions for the card.

2-The card gets VERY warm. In fact, in both IBM's, after an hour or so of surfing, the card literally shuts off. The green light goes off and the notebook doesn't think the card is inserted. You must cool down the notebook and card by powering off for a good 15 minutes or more before it will be redetected upon reboot/reinsertion.

Save your money, go with better quality stuff than this. :(

1-0 out of 5 stars SMC is going downhill
I have a wired/wireless combo home network made exclusively of SMC devices. I could not have been happier untill...
I recently tried to connect my Xbox to the network using an SMC2670 wireless adapter. The first one would drop the connection after a few hours and I would have to reboot it. I replaced it and the new one does the exact same thing only it takes him a little longer. I blamed the device and/or topology even though my little SMC2632 would connect my laptop from virtually the same exact location. Lo and behold, I broke the old 2632 and went with the 2435 - what a mistake! I have never seen a more stubborn piece of ... hardware. Actually the card itself SEEMED OK. It was their stupid software that failed in every respect. I initially installed the manager and the driver shipped with the card (V1). It worked, but it would not show me the MAC address. I use MAC filtering on my AP, so that was no good. As soon as I updated the driver/manager combo to version 3.0.0 it all went to hell in a handbasket. The driver would load but the manager would not detect the card! The GUI would just beep and not load. It took me a while to understand that in SMC language that means the card was not found. I tried going back to Version 1 for the manager, then for the driver, then both and everything in between. Cleaned registry, clean uninstall, reboot, nothing. I was ready to eat the card. NO MORE SMC for me...Shipped the FUBAR back - let them keep it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SMC is the Best Buy in Networking
I have two of these cards running in me and my wifes laptops, and they never run hot, always give a five bar signal strength thru out the house.I can go downstairs to my friends apartment at the other end of the building with no problen. I live in New York City were there are literally thousands of hotspot all over the city, but the highest of amount of electronic interference in the United States and have picked up signals wherever I am in the city. Even when I see others struggling to connect or not getting a good signal. Every part of my wired and wireless network is from SMC networks. I also have two PC with 10/100 ethernet card and a router. I have had zero downtown on my network due to SMC. Very durable, capable, efficient and inexpensive product. I dont know why they arent a household name yet. I am sure they will in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovin' it.
I got this item in combo somewhere else, actually. I've used cards from D-link and Linksys and this one is by far the best card. Although it's not very attractive, SMC has always provided great, reliable networking products. I had no trouble at all setting up the whole WiFi network and the fidelity is great. I would recommend people never to use the XP manager for Wifi for anything. The propriety software is oftentimes better and you get less dropped packets.

Go get one. I got it in combo with the SMC BarricadeĀ™ Turbo 11/22Mbps Router with a $$$ rebate and I'm loving it. ... Read more
