5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product at a good price
The monitor is attractive and easy to set up. It has very good brightness and contrast. The response speed, which can be a problem with LCD monitors, is the fastest I have seen. It had only one bad pixel, which is about as good as any LCD monitor I have seen. I am seriously considering replacing my last CRT monitor with another LCD5V. Great job NEC! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice LCD !!
I bought this 1560NX monitor after I read the review for the 1560M (very simalar but with speakers and a higher contrast ratio). Anyhow, when I first got the monitor I was generally pleased. I would have given it a 4/5 then. But after a while I realized that it just wasn't as crisp as my Gateway 9300 laptop screen. Even though my laptop was old, it had one of the clearest texts of any screen I've used (albeit - not a bright screen)

I'm very picky so this started me looking again and I discovered, by comparing lcds in the stores, that this NEC monitor was about average when it came to text and a little above average on colors. In fact I was seriously considering trading it in for a Samsung 152B. The samsung has a good even text. Text is very important to me.

But before I did this switch, I decided to buy a video card with DVI support and hook it up to this monitor (since it has both VGA and DVI connectors)

WOW! - What a difference. It when from good to GREAT. The colors are more accurate and brigher and the text is now very sharp. I would say that it is now as good as the Samsung. Now I feel that this monitor is about as good as they get.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Update...
I wrote the other review, and I have a correction to make. I had to write a new review - after all, I don't want to lose all my helpful votes now do I?

I've since bought a new graphics card (ASUS GeForce4 MX440), which has made the monitor sooooo much sharper at the higher resolutions containing more than 1600 horizontal pixels (i.e. 1920x1080, 1920x1200, 1920x1440 and 2048x1536). I didn't think a graphics card would make any difference at all to the quality of the display. Boy was I wrong. Before I said that the screen was slightly blurry looking at say 1920x1440. Now I find it is very crisp indeed, and I suddenly realised why this monitor is worth so much.
The display is still the slightest bit "shaky" at 2048x1536 @ 75Hz, it kind of quivers or hovers around a bit. This is probably because it is 75Hz and not 85 or 100Hz. Personally, I don't find that 75Hz is high enough for the amount of time I spend in front of the computer. But anyway, the "blurriness" aspect has gone completely.
The only explanation I can come up with is that when I yanked out the two-year-old old graphics card, there was a really thick layer of dust on the back of the circuit board. A few times, I'd carefully vacuumed out some of the dust from inside the computer, but I must have missed that area. Sorry NEC, if you lost any customers because of the other review.

With over 3 million pixels at my disposal, I can display two whole pages in MS Word side-by-side simultaneously, while still being able to legibly read font (Verdana) as small as size six!! Try doing THAT with any LCD display!!
So it sure helps with the layout aspect of serious word-processing (such as producing a thesis or a book). It is also capable of displaying, perhaps, 3, 4 or even 5 times the number of cells at any one time than, say, a 17" monitor could in those huge spreadsheets you sometimes create (no I'm not kidding).
And for all you gamers out there, can you imagine playing need for speed 4 in 2048x1536, and 16-bit colour? That is the reality. What a blast!

One last thing, for all you desktop publishers and graphics artists out there: know that you better plan on getting a mighty fine graphics card if you intend to use 32-bit colour at the 2048x1536 pixel mode, because even though I bought the ASUS card that said it could cope with this @ 75Hz, it could only manage 60Hz, which is not good enough for me. I even edited the ini files of the display driver to try and force it to work, but could not get the claimed 75Hz - despite what it said on the website to the contrary. So I stick with 16-bit colour, partly because I can't really notice the difference, but mainly because the refresh rate is higher.
The other thing to consider is that even though the monitor may be capable of, let's say, 1600x1200@95Hz - the graphics card might only be able to display 85Hz or 100Hz at this resolution, so you must use the lower one, which is a pity because it isn't taking full advantage of the monitor's capabilities.

But I'd still give it six stars if I could! :-)

ONE MORE THING: NEC ISN'T NOT GOING TO MAKE THIS IN AUSTRALIA ANY LONGER, SO SNAP IT UP WHILE YOU STILL CAN 'CAUSE THEY'RE NOT GETTING ANY CHEAPER!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Varanus Komodoensis"
A couple of things about this screen which you may not already know. Firstly, I noticed that the image that you see on the screen is kind of set back a little, behind this flat glass plate that is at the actual front of the monitor. The resulting parallax error will be noticeable if viewing from the side at an angle - something that you can't tell if you're buying sight-unseen. On the positive side, you do get a built in USB hub, so you'll get 2 more slots than you have now!

You'll probably need to get yourself a new graphics card; the minimum that will take advantage of the FP1355's full potential will be at least the nVidia GeForce II MX400. If you're paying this much for your monitor, a little extra for a new card probably isn't going to make any difference (or like me, you can't afford anything else for months).
Don't think that because this monitor is capable of up to 2048 x 1536 @ 75Hz that this resolution will be practical. At this highest resolution, I couldn't help notice that the resolution is not all that crisp, perhaps a little blurry or more correctly, quivery - so it isn't perfect. Do you use the highest res possible on your existing monitor? Probably not, right? So if you can't live with using this monitor at the NEC recommended 1600 x 1200 @ 95Hz, I'd say don't buy it.
Don't forget that if you will be looking at text, you will have to make it slightly larger because you'll be using much higher resolutions. However, you can will be able to look at smaller-sized fonts than with normal monitors because it will look crisper and less pixelly.

A small tip for windows setup: go to the display properties window / settings tab / advanced button / general tab - and where it says font size, choose other and make it something like 150 or 200% and THEN go back to the display properties window / appearance tab and re-adjust the size of each item individually for fine tuning. If you don't make the fonts 200% of their normal size, some of the text that you will see in use during windows will be very small indeed and it can't be changed by changing any of the items in the appearance tab alone, and you will end up squinting.

I truly don't think this monitor is for everyone. If you know much about computers and windows setup, and you enjoy customising everything..... if you spend hours with your current monitor adjusting the screen's image so that you get the last millimetre of display area out of it - you will be very pleased; but I couldn't recommend it if you simply want to do ordinary computing just with a bigger screen. Remember that the intended use is desktop publishing / CAD / graphic design and perhaps spreadsheets (although NEC doesn't mention this use) - which is what I bought it for.

Yes, the two thin horizontal black lines are visible on any light-coloured background. But only a perfectionist or fastidious person would be truly bothered by it. It's something that you learn to live with.
I have personally called it "varanus komodoensis" which translates as komodo dragon - or the biggest monitor that ever lived!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Display!
This is a *nice* monitor for the price. I'm using it with a PowerBook Titanium which has a direct DVI output on the back - so the video signal is digital all the way. Very crisp, sharp, and *bright*. I was worried that it wouldn't be bright enough after comparing it to the 1560M, but it's *plenty* bright - I only have it set to 47% of the possible brighness now, and that's just fine. At full brightness it blows me away. Also, I was worried that 15" wouldn't be big enough, but it's plenty big after being used to a 15" laptop display.

My only complaint is that it was a little tough to get the color properly matched between the laptop and the new display - probably due to the new display being much brighter. ColorSync to the rescue though - I have it pretty close now.

I can't comment on how this would work with VGA since I haven't tried it - but it works very well with DVI. Beware though - the cable is not included - you'll have to buy one separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NEC Flat Panel Monitors, Without peers, IMHO!
I already own the NEC 1880SX Flat Panel Monitor, for 1 1/2 years now. It is the best flat panel monitor I have seen-- Brightest Whites, Incredible Clarity & Definition, beautiful slim bezel (only 1/2"). So when I bought my wife a new computer, since she loved my 1880SX, I hooked it to her new Dell 4600C, and ordered a Dell 2001FP for myself. Though I love Dell computers, I was very very disappointed in their flat panel. I tweaked and tweaked it to try to get a picture quality comparable to my NEC 1880SX, now on my wife's computer (so it was easy to compare the two panels). I could not get a quality picture to compare to the NEC. So I contacted Dell to return their 2001FP, and after talking to NEC Tech Support about what I liked in their 1880SX, I told them that I wanted something 19 or 20" with comparable picture quality. They were very helpful and recommended this NEC 1960NX. So I promptly ordered one. I have not been disappointed! The picture quality is almost identical to the 1880SX--brightest whites you will see, great clarity, not quite as thin a bezel as the 1880SX, but still a slim clean profile.

If either of these NEC models are discontinued when you are shopping flat panels, call NEC Tech Support like I did, and ask for a recommendation on a comparable quality picture in the NEC line. Personally, I cannot see myself buying anything but an NEC in a flat panel. I spend too much time looking at my flat panel display to settle for poor quality. (No, I do not work for NEC/Mitsubishi. I am just a self-employed businessman who has benefited from the electronics products online reviews of others, so I wanted to give something back to the online community)

My humble recommendation -- If you value your eyes, and you want superior quality in a flat panel display, take a look at the NEC line before you buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open the window, let the light in.
Upgrading, as I did, from an 800x640 13in CRT monitor, almost anything would look good in comparison. After doing extensive research, and unable to view the product in a store, I decided to take a chance and purchase it sight unseen. I was not disappointed. Installation was the essence of ease and simplcity. The presentational qualities of this monitor are outstanding, and it saves desktop space to boot. You cannot go wrong, from a quality standpoint, by buying this monitor. I have never had any trouble with any of the NEC units I have owned, and this is the fourth. They have all become obsolete long before they are worn out. In terms of price, there are cheaper units available, and this one has increased $63 since I bought it 10 days ago, but it is a good quality product which should last a long time, and not need repair.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Super Monitor!
I installed the NEC-Mitsubishi 1960NX 19" LCD Monitor on Friday, January 2, 2004. I then restarted my computer and watched while my Windows XP operating system found the new hardware and installed the correct monitor. Without my doing a thing, the monitor then Auto-Adjusted the brightness, contrast and color to produce a bright, clear and beautiful display. The instalation and adjustment took less than 30 minutes and gave me the best display on any monitor I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Display for Webpages, Text, Graphics
I looked hard for severals months and compared many LCD displays (18/19") in this price range. In fact at a place in Tokyo called "Big Camera" (near Yurachuo Station; 7 story gadget place) about 30 LCD displays can be compared side by side inclusing Eizo, Samsung, and Sony as well as many other brands. The NEC 1960NX combines a number of good characteristics such as text quality and graphics. Especially, webpages combining text and graphics stand out. At work I have a Samsung 191T, also 19". Not a bad display, but the whites are not as white, e.g. more like gray (I am exagerating) and reading text is not as crisp while the colors for grahics are not quite as staturated. I have haven't looked at video though, although, the 1960 NX according to reviews is supposed to be quite good at it. For anyone who does not know. LCDs have somewhat of a difficult time to display high speed video as the screen maintains memory of the previous frame. From what I can tell is not a serious problems with the new displays and I simply don't find it obviouss. Also read PC world reviews on comparing various 19 inch displays. Another 19" display I like is the Sharp's 19 inch display LL-T19D1 which is probably just as good as this 1960nx although color calibaration is not as flexible (whites are slightly better for the NEC 1960). In a way I was torn between the Sharp LL-T19D1 and the NEC 1960NX. I thought the Sharp was just as good but the display height adjustment is awkward and the display woobles too much. Not a big issue but also it's a bit ugly. The quality of the Sharp display is excellent though (as is the NEC). The only gripe I have about the 1960NX is that is does not come with a DVI cable (~$17.00). Only comes with an analogue cable. This is true for about half the LCD monitors out there. For text quality the best LCD I have seen is the Eizo L685. However, it is 18" and becoming quickly outdated because of 19" displays. So for now and for the price the NEC is indeed a decent deal for someone who wants a high quality display in the "semi-professiional" range for text, graphics, and video. If you care about accurate color calibration you have to look a notch higher (~2X) as well as pay for it. Cheers... ... Read more
