4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of serious consideration!!
65% of its use is as a copier, 20% as a printer and 15% as a fax machine. So far, it has perfomed as I expected. We have 3 Brother laserprinters in the office. Brother has always proven to be an excellent workhorse and this is no exception. Also, Brother provides great tech support for both Windows and Mac systems. I have no loyalty to Brother. But as long as their products have proven themselves, they stay near the top of my list.

Software installed without any problems on both Windows XP Pro and OS X. Haven't used the scanning abilities and I doubt we will (so I can't comment on its capabilities). But as a copier, fax and printer, it has worked great. The ADF is a pleasure (no jams after 3,000+ copies) and the copier itself is fast. This copier DOES have a page counter, but it can't be reset. So if you have an unknown amount of papers to put in the ADF and need 20 sets, you can determine the amount of copies made.

Toner life is an expected 6,700 pages and I suspect we'll get close to 6,300 before needing replacement (always seem to get 5% less then the expectd yield on text imaging). The unit did come with a smaller yielding toner cartridge (3,500 impressions), but we had the higher yielding in the office and used that first.

If there is one thing I wasn't expecting is the noise it makes. Not that it is any louder then the Canon 780 in our other office. Having various Brother printers throughout the office, this unit is a bit louder then I expected. Also, it is built well, but not as solid as the Canon 780. But comparing the two is like comparing a Buick to a Cadillac. Both good and reliable cars, just one make is slightly better constructed then the other. All in all, this is a great unit and worthy of serious consideration. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If you work at home or in a small office environment, the cost in both money and space of buying single-use machines can be prohibitively expensive. The MFC-210C from Brother delivers printing, copying, scanning, and faxing capabilities, allowing you to free up office space and combine all your important office tasks into one effective machine. With its small 3-picoliter droplet size, the MFC-210C delivers print resolutions of up to 6,000 x 1,200 dpi and print speeds of up to 20 ppm for black and up to 15 ppm for color. The easy-to-use, 100-page, front-loading paper tray accommodates sizes up to 8.5 by 14.0 inches, while a 25-sheet output paper tray accommodates most print jobs easily.

The fax machine is capable of both black and color faxing, and has transmission speeds of up to 6 seconds per page. Twenty auto-dial locations are provided to help you keep track of your most important numbers, and a 70-location broadcasting feature allows you to send one fax to multiple locations. A redial function will automatically attempt to reach the dialed number until you receive an answer, while a 25-page internal memory means that you won't miss important faxes, even when you run out of paper.

The built-in copier is capable of both black and color copying, with copy speeds of up to 17 cpm for black and up to 11 cpm for color. You can reduce or enlarge your copies anywhere from 25% to 400%, while a multi-copy function lets you make up to 99 copies from a single original. The scanner has a 36-bit color depth and 256 levels of grayscale, resulting in crisp colors and subtle grays; and the 600 x 2,400 optical scan resolution provides accurate, true-to-life scans. Additionally, one-touch scan-to-e-mail, scan-to-image, scan-to-OCR, and scan-to-file buttons automate these frequently used scanner functions.

If you are a digital photo enthusiast, you'll be glad to hear that the MFC-210C has a photo capture center that allows you to create photo-quality prints directly from a wide variety of media cards, with or without your PC. Several helpful software tools, including ScanSoft PaperPort, ScanSoft OmniPage OCR Software, and Presto! PageManager Software for Mac, help you get the most out of your prints and scans. The unit connects to your computer via its USB port, while an optional wireless print server can be purchased to use the MFC-210C as a wireless print device. Energy Star compliant, the unit consumes only 20 watts during normal operation and about 3 watts during sleep mode. Compatible with PC and Mac operating systems, the MFC-210C also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

What's in the Box
MFC210c multifunction, paper tray, ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), CD-ROM with PC fax/drivers and bundled software (ScanSoft PaperPort, ScanSoft OmniPage OCR Software, and Presto! PageManager for Mac), telephone line cord, instructions; USB cable not included ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars better than expected - great for the money
I needed to replace my HP OfficeJet 710 that was loud and aging. I didn't plan on spending quite this much, but the features that you get with the Brother MFC 9700 makes it a bargain. Yes, the laser printer is quiet and fast. The sheetfeeder operation is smooth. No jams anywhere so far. The flatbed cover hinges raise over 1 inch for book scanning. Stand-alone fax is fast and sends very legible docs. Copier is one-touch and output looks great.

It's little bonuses that please me too like the caller-id display, print driver options for manual two-sided printing and watermarks, fast warm-up time and one-touch fax receive mode selection.

I miss color printing, but I wouldn't return to InkJet for it. Laser is sharper than InkJet, more professional looking and doesn't ever smear. Another bonus: though the laser is b&w, the scanner is 24bit color up to 9600x9600 - also has grayscale and b&w scan settings. Color scanning from photos is accurate to my eye.

My laptop connects to work over VPN from my home office, so there is no way to setup network printing that lets my laptop print after VPN disconnects it from my home LAN. The big bonus for me is that I can have my home Win98 system print to the MFC 9700 over USB at the same time as my WinNT laptop prints using its Parallel Port. Perfect solution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product with minor deficiencies
Good design, performs as expected, but:

1. Do not plan on using it through a parallel port. After you restart your computer, the first print job comes out as a bunch of unintelligible characters on top of each page, and the pages just keep coming out until you pull out the paper tray and disconnect the printer. It appears that you can go through an entire paper ream if you send a job to the printer and go to get a cup of tea. You need to reset the printer after each computer restart. After I connected the machine though a USB port, the problem disappeared.

2. The machine is a power hog. Lights dim when it starts printing. Does Brother use all this power to provide fast printing? Apparently not -- the machine takes about 15 seconds to start the printing process. In comparison, my five-year-old Xerox P8 starts printing in about half the time, and without dimming the lights.

3. According to an email I received from Brother, you cannot have more than one Brother MFC connected to the same computer. But I was able to get the MFC 9700 and my old MFC 3100 (inkjet but with color capability) to work from the same PC, just not at the same time.

4. Brother phone support takes forever, occasionally disconnecting you after the longest time on the phone. Email response took 2 business days.

5. Otherwise, a great, fast printer, and a good scanner, copier, and fax. Also, printing is inexpensive, with the high-yield toner cartridge costing less than the cartridge for my Xerox, while providing more toner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended without reservations.
Brother must have updated the software for this multifunction marvel since some of the reviewers wrote in late 2002, because I have been using it on XP for about three months now with no problems whatsoever. Installation was easy, and instructions were well-laid out in the step-by-step poster that comes inside the box.

I will note that the last driver installation step on the poster is unnecessary -- the first of the two available drivers installs fine and gives full Windows functionality. I think that the extra driver may let you do some extra things, but for general home/business use, I have felt no limitations.

The MFC works extremely well with both its standalone functions (fax and copy with automatic doc feeder) as well as with its computer-connected functions (scan, fax from PC, print). I have been nothing but pleased with each and every function.

If you don't need color printing, this is a great buy. The laser engine produces pages that are high quality, resistant to sun/water, and outputs them quickly (after a fairly short first-page warmup). Also, cost per page is very low.

One final point -- the box that this comes in is BIG and the unit is heavy. Be sure that you either ship this one to its final destination, or that you have access to a car big enough to carry it. (Think station wagon or SUV, given the length x width x height of the shipping box.) Also, the unit itself is fairly large, so just make sure you've found a good place for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works awesome with Macintosh OSX and OS 9.x and Windows
Great little workhorse. I have the machine hooked to a Windows 2000 & Win 98SE (dual boot) thru the ECP parallel port. Works great for scanning, faxing, printing, copying. Only feature I don't use is fax receiving on the PC thru the Brother 9700.
I also have the unit hooked up thru USB to my Macintosh G3 B&W (upgraded to G4-450 w/ Panther). I regularly scan into Photoshop 7 (OSX) without any problems. I can print and fax thru USB to the Brother 9700 (both OSX and classic (not fax) works fine) without any probems. I haven't scanned into classic mode (why would I) Also haven't had a need to receive faxes into my Mac thru the Brother 9700. One complaint is that the PaperPort software is Windows only-Bummer! If paperport for OSX was included, this machine would get another star! I wish this unit could be networked as well as have the USB, Parallel (for scanning, faxing, etc) and network (for printing and fax only) at the same time! (hmm, maybe dual USB connections???) Otherwise, this Brother rocks! And only $350 (price match office supply stores)!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This is without a doubt the most reliable and happy IT purchase I have made to date! I home office and I push this machine hard. I primarily print, fax, and copy. I use a couple reams of paper per week. I have had my machine for over a year now. I have not had any problems. I would enthusiastically recommend this machine to anyone. I don't know how I would live without it anymore! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value for the price
Considering that the street price on this machine is under $...(plus a... rebate) you are getting a lot of bang for the buck. What I was looking for a was a reasonably priced multifunction laser printer that would be used primarily for printing text, occasional faxes, and document imaging. I found what I was looking for in the Brother MFC-4800.

Looking at it function-by-function, the laser printing quality is excellent (and fast) when it comes to text, but achieves only average quality when printing graphics. For my fax needs the MFC-4800 fits the bill and even provides features that I'll never use (broadcasting, and fax forwarding, come to mind) .

The quality of the scans is acceptable for my uses (archiving phone, cable, and credit card statements, etc.) However, the document feeder does seem to be overly sensitive to slight misalignments, thus creating a scan that is at a slight angle. Copy quality is significantly worse than average, but acceptable for making copies for archival or backup purposes. If you need to make copies where appearance matters, e.g., of handouts for a presentation, definitely consider going to a copy shop, or even a convenience store.

As far as installation goes, I'm using Windows XP Pro SP-1 and installation was uneventful. XP drivers and software were included on the installation CD-ROM that was included in the package. Buyers of units that have been on store shelves for a long time may need to download the XP drivers from Brother's web site. The included OCR software works with XP. In a review on another site, and even on Brother's web site, I read that the OCR software was non-functional under XP, but I am able to scan a document and edit the resulting text with no problems.

Even if all you need is an inexpensive laser printer, the MFC-4800 should be considered especially since it is in the price range of most other single function printer only units. If you decide on buying it, you will probably find its additional functions to be icing on the cake.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont load the software!
The machine is OK, the support... there is none. The software is a hack job, again no support. I loaded it on Win 98 & it created all kinds of conflicts with other software (Publisher from Microsoft in particular).

1-0 out of 5 stars Reconsider before you make a big mistake.
These machines are known for placing random ink marks on your paper after a jamb. If you have paper jamb inside the machine (as opposed to in the feeder), you will inevitably have random black marks on every page thereafter. It has been a continuing problem and since Brother doesn't have a fix for it, they tell you to replace, you guessed it, the $160 drum unit! That's over half the price of what they sold the machine to us for. Think twice before buying. As stated before, the scanning and copying on this unit leave a lot to be desired.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't do it
I had a Brother word processor before PC's were hip, so I thought I'd be ok with a Brother printer. Not! It no longer scans, if I want to print I have to un-plug it and plug it back in for each job. Ink cartridges don't last long at all. It faxes ok!

Sorry, when it comes to printers spend a few extra bucks and buy HP. I wish I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to get frustrated!
Indeed, it is an "all can do" machine. At least during the first months. We are a small business and use the machine only a few times a day. But after a few months we had a problem with ink lines being spread out on each page we printed out. The Brother people (help line) were very helpful but couldn't find a solution. I eventually came up with the idea to replace the Drum Unit. The problem was solved but two weeks later, we had the same problem all over again. Now I wouldn't mind that this Drum Unit was just a few bucks...the problem is that one of these Drum Units costs you A LOT MORE than the purchase price of the Brother MFC-4800. ............In a perfect world, you can take it to a service center that Brother suggests. But who can live without a fax, telephone and copier for a week? Not a normal business! !! Do yourself a favour, calculate your time, toner and drum unit costs into the price of a machine.
A more expensive one might actually be cheaper in the long run. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Print problem
There seems to be a print problem with these printers. I was thrilled to see the price with so many features. So I ran down to a local store to try one out. Both of the ones in the stores had lousy test prints. I then used a picture and did a copy. Even copying black and white. The prints are soo grainy. It looks like it reverted back to 300 dpi prints. I don't see how the machine could be advertised as high resolution machine? Perhaps it is just a software mistake? Anyway I returned to the office and I found several others on the net had similar problems. So I would stay away until brother resolves this problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I was going to buy this just for the stand alone fax but after I installed and set up the whole package, I've turned it into my default printer. I've had multi function machines before but this is far and away the best. Maybe it's because it's a laser, but it prints and copies fast. The fax setup was a breeze as was installation. Output is very good. In short, a winner. True, it doesn't have color, but I have little need for that. I will admit I haven't tried the scanner yet, but the excellent fax, copy function and printer function make it worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent All Around
I replaced my long-running Brother MFC-P2000 with this unit because of the excellent experience I had with the original Brother product. This one is even better! I needed to add fax capability and wanted a flatbed scanner - this model does it all! Trust me, if you need color, buy a less expensive ink jet for those times in addition to this one. The laser quality of this machine is perfect for any home office work you need to do. It is fast, SUPER QUIET, and produces excellent fax, copy, scan, and most importantly print output. The key layout and menu structure are simple and great. I recommend this product without reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Multifunction Machine
We brought this machine because our old Brother MFC4550's drum died and it would have cost about $100+ to replace it. Also, we needed a copy machine for book and other copying (not just flat sheets that can be fed through the MFC4550) and were tired of running out of memory on print jobs. Increasing the 4550's 1/2 mb memory to 2 mb would be another $120. It didn't make sense to spend $250 trying to fix/improve and old machine when another $200 would get us a better one with a flat bed copier!

We had the MFC4550 for over 5 years and were very happy with it, except for the limited memory. The laser copies were sharp and it was incredibly reliable. The new MFC6800 makes sharper copies and the 8 mb of standard memory (vs. 1/2 mb for the 4500) is incredible!

I have a home office so the 6800 is on all the time for faxes. It also serves as our network printer so everyone (4 of us) is printing to it all the time. We've had it for over 6 months and it hasn't fail yet (the MFC4550 performed the same for over 5 years so this one should be just as reliable). Our only complaint would be the small toner cartridges (only 2,000 copies), but you can't beat the 6800's price, copy/print quality, features and reliability.

Note: Because we use this as a network printer, we do not use the machine as a scanner so have no comment on its scanning features.

3-0 out of 5 stars Problems Windows XP Profession
The PC-Fax feature does not work with Windows XP Pro. Brother is aware of problems with Windows XP and their website recommends downloading the driver specifically for XP. However, having done that PC-Fax is still not recognized by Windows.
Their techinical support is does not know how to deal with the problem either.
Other than this I have not experienced any other problems so far.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drum wears out quickly and is very expensive
My primary issue with this machine is the drum. I need a new one about once per year and they are very expensive. Could they have designed the drum as a "disposable". My previous HP LaserJet ran for years and never had a drum problem. I am going into my third year and now need to buy my second replacement drum. And I am not a heavy printer; perhaps 3000 sheets per year. If I had known this beforehand, I would not have bought this unit. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled
The machine itself it great. Easy to use etc. But it's the dudes who programmed the "artificial intelligence" in this thing that really messed it up and has me pissed off.

If one of the cartridges goes out, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING! Supposedly the fax doesn't even work. Huh? This is an obvious attempt that they just want you to buy buy buy more cartridges than you need.

I only use the black. I have never touched the colors. But for some reason, the colors run out before the black. What the...? And now they want me to replace everything before the machine will be usable again. I looked at the colors, and it clearly still has A LOT of ink or whatever inside. And there isn't a way to fool the machine by just taking it out and putting it back in.

I'm really thinking about just filling it with toilet water to let the machine think there's something inside. Don't know if it'll work. But here's the bottom line. I ran through the whole set (or the machine thinks I did) of ink in 4 months. So here's what you need to know. It costs about $80 or so to replace the set. So do you really want to pay $240 a year just to use the fax machine? If you actually do some printing, think $400+. This is lame. Fellow users. Anyone have suggestions please help us all.

1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
This thing looks great, but I have had two major problems

1) The printer will not print if it thinks one of the ink cartridges is empty, which happens often when they are not empty: it has happened to me with nearly new cartridges. It essentially renders the device useless. Anyone know how to work around this? Please post a review if you do.

2) The paper feeder does not pick up paper unless I manually hold my finger against the tension arm. Clearly inconvenient, especially if you want to receive faxes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
Seems like a great buy, but the unit shuts down when it 'thinks' the ink cartridges are empty. I'm replacing FULL cartridges after only about 50 B/W pages. I'll try replacing one time, but if this continues, I'll have to replace the unit. NOTE there is no manual override, the printer will NOT work if it thinks a cartridge is empty. My cost? 50 pages for $20 of ink, 40 cents a page. Use Kinkos, it's cheaper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent fax, Acceptable color printer-copier, Great price
Amazon's service was very good. The box arrived well ahead of the estimated date.

You can't beat the price tag ... with 5-in-1 capabilities. While this is not a photo-quality printer, it is great for office use. At this price, it offers 4 separate inkwells that can be purchased separately based on your level of usage -- not offered by the competition. Please note that the Amazon product description which says that the product includes a handset is incorrect.

The unit is a breeze to set up as copier, printer, outgoing fax, scanner and PC Fax (set aside 30mins, max). However, setting this up for incoming faxes when you have an answering machine on the same line is very difficult because it is not completely documented (Solution: Set TAD, and set number of rings for receive to 1. Also, don't have any filters installed on the answering machine outlet and fax outlet). While the hold time when I called Brother Customer Service was more than 45 mins, once I got thru, they were able to resolve this issue thoroughly and courteously.

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Based on all the reviews I purchased the MFC3100C model about 10 months ago to replace a HP printer I had used for 3 years. I use it lightly for home use and have not even had to replace any of the print cartridges yet. The outbound fax portion and scanner still work great but, unfortunately it will not feed paper in from the rear sheet feeder any longer. I am very disappointed in the quality of this printer. I think I will hook the HP back up and start looking for a new all in one not from Brother. ... Read more
