Amazon.com Product Description The fax machine is capable of both black and color faxing, and has transmission speeds of up to 6 seconds per page. Twenty auto-dial locations are provided to help you keep track of your most important numbers, and a 70-location broadcasting feature allows you to send one fax to multiple locations. A redial function will automatically attempt to reach the dialed number until you receive an answer, while a 25-page internal memory means that you won't miss important faxes, even when you run out of paper. The built-in copier is capable of both black and color copying, with copy speeds of up to 17 cpm for black and up to 11 cpm for color. You can reduce or enlarge your copies anywhere from 25% to 400%, while a multi-copy function lets you make up to 99 copies from a single original. The scanner has a 36-bit color depth and 256 levels of grayscale, resulting in crisp colors and subtle grays; and the 600 x 2,400 optical scan resolution provides accurate, true-to-life scans. Additionally, one-touch scan-to-e-mail, scan-to-image, scan-to-OCR, and scan-to-file buttons automate these frequently used scanner functions. If you are a digital photo enthusiast, you'll be glad to hear that the MFC-210C has a photo capture center that allows you to create photo-quality prints directly from a wide variety of media cards, with or without your PC. Several helpful software tools, including ScanSoft PaperPort, ScanSoft OmniPage OCR Software, and Presto! PageManager Software for Mac, help you get the most out of your prints and scans. The unit connects to your computer via its USB port, while an optional wireless print server can be purchased to use the MFC-210C as a wireless print device. Energy Star compliant, the unit consumes only 20 watts during normal operation and about 3 watts during sleep mode. Compatible with PC and Mac operating systems, the MFC-210C also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty. What's in the Box Features | |

Amazon.com Product Description As a fax, the 14.4 modem transmits documents at a steady rate, while the 64-shade gray scale clearly highlights the details of your graphs and charts. The 100-sheet capacity can handle either letter or legal sheets, while features like Quick-scan, a 10-page automatic feeder, and 48-station memory dialer make fax management a cinch. PC users can take advantage of computer-direct faxing, which allows customizable cover pages and viewing received pages before printing. The Windows-compatible scanner allows simple image scanning at 400 x 400 dpi. Management software is included, which allows you to easily process images for use in other documents. The all-digital answering system provides five mailboxes that store voice and fax messages. Message paging and fax forwarding functions allow you to work from home while maintaining full communication, and the built-in speakerphone allows convenient hands-free calls. When printing or copying, documents look clear and crisp with 200 x 400 dpi monochrome printing. Copies can be enlarged or reduced at the touch of a button, with up to 99 prints from one original. Top print speed from your PC is two pages per minute. Cables, drivers, and a starting print cartridge are all included, as is a one-year warranty on parts and service. Features Reviews (27)
It's little bonuses that please me too like the caller-id display, print driver options for manual two-sided printing and watermarks, fast warm-up time and one-touch fax receive mode selection. I miss color printing, but I wouldn't return to InkJet for it. Laser is sharper than InkJet, more professional looking and doesn't ever smear. Another bonus: though the laser is b&w, the scanner is 24bit color up to 9600x9600 - also has grayscale and b&w scan settings. Color scanning from photos is accurate to my eye. My laptop connects to work over VPN from my home office, so there is no way to setup network printing that lets my laptop print after VPN disconnects it from my home LAN. The big bonus for me is that I can have my home Win98 system print to the MFC 9700 over USB at the same time as my WinNT laptop prints using its Parallel Port. Perfect solution.
1. Do not plan on using it through a parallel port. After you restart your computer, the first print job comes out as a bunch of unintelligible characters on top of each page, and the pages just keep coming out until you pull out the paper tray and disconnect the printer. It appears that you can go through an entire paper ream if you send a job to the printer and go to get a cup of tea. You need to reset the printer after each computer restart. After I connected the machine though a USB port, the problem disappeared. 2. The machine is a power hog. Lights dim when it starts printing. Does Brother use all this power to provide fast printing? Apparently not -- the machine takes about 15 seconds to start the printing process. In comparison, my five-year-old Xerox P8 starts printing in about half the time, and without dimming the lights. 3. According to an email I received from Brother, you cannot have more than one Brother MFC connected to the same computer. But I was able to get the MFC 9700 and my old MFC 3100 (inkjet but with color capability) to work from the same PC, just not at the same time. 4. Brother phone support takes forever, occasionally disconnecting you after the longest time on the phone. Email response took 2 business days. 5. Otherwise, a great, fast printer, and a good scanner, copier, and fax. Also, printing is inexpensive, with the high-yield toner cartridge costing less than the cartridge for my Xerox, while providing more toner.
I will note that the last driver installation step on the poster is unnecessary -- the first of the two available drivers installs fine and gives full Windows functionality. I think that the extra driver may let you do some extra things, but for general home/business use, I have felt no limitations. The MFC works extremely well with both its standalone functions (fax and copy with automatic doc feeder) as well as with its computer-connected functions (scan, fax from PC, print). I have been nothing but pleased with each and every function. If you don't need color printing, this is a great buy. The laser engine produces pages that are high quality, resistant to sun/water, and outputs them quickly (after a fairly short first-page warmup). Also, cost per page is very low. One final point -- the box that this comes in is BIG and the unit is heavy. Be sure that you either ship this one to its final destination, or that you have access to a car big enough to carry it. (Think station wagon or SUV, given the length x width x height of the shipping box.) Also, the unit itself is fairly large, so just make sure you've found a good place for it.

Looking at it function-by-function, the laser printing quality is excellent (and fast) when it comes to text, but achieves only average quality when printing graphics. For my fax needs the MFC-4800 fits the bill and even provides features that I'll never use (broadcasting, and fax forwarding, come to mind) . The quality of the scans is acceptable for my uses (archiving phone, cable, and credit card statements, etc.) However, the document feeder does seem to be overly sensitive to slight misalignments, thus creating a scan that is at a slight angle. Copy quality is significantly worse than average, but acceptable for making copies for archival or backup purposes. If you need to make copies where appearance matters, e.g., of handouts for a presentation, definitely consider going to a copy shop, or even a convenience store. As far as installation goes, I'm using Windows XP Pro SP-1 and installation was uneventful. XP drivers and software were included on the installation CD-ROM that was included in the package. Buyers of units that have been on store shelves for a long time may need to download the XP drivers from Brother's web site. The included OCR software works with XP. In a review on another site, and even on Brother's web site, I read that the OCR software was non-functional under XP, but I am able to scan a document and edit the resulting text with no problems. Even if all you need is an inexpensive laser printer, the MFC-4800 should be considered especially since it is in the price range of most other single function printer only units. If you decide on buying it, you will probably find its additional functions to be icing on the cake.
Sorry, when it comes to printers spend a few extra bucks and buy HP. I wish I did.

We had the MFC4550 for over 5 years and were very happy with it, except for the limited memory. The laser copies were sharp and it was incredibly reliable. The new MFC6800 makes sharper copies and the 8 mb of standard memory (vs. 1/2 mb for the 4500) is incredible! I have a home office so the 6800 is on all the time for faxes. It also serves as our network printer so everyone (4 of us) is printing to it all the time. We've had it for over 6 months and it hasn't fail yet (the MFC4550 performed the same for over 5 years so this one should be just as reliable). Our only complaint would be the small toner cartridges (only 2,000 copies), but you can't beat the 6800's price, copy/print quality, features and reliability. Note: Because we use this as a network printer, we do not use the machine as a scanner so have no comment on its scanning features.

The unit is compatible with your phone company's Caller ID service, with which it displays the number and, if available, the name of the person calling or faxing you. Compatible with both Windows and Apple computers (see technical specifications for limitations of each), the MFC-3220C connects to your computer using a simple USB interface (cable not supplied) a 100-sheet-capacity paper tray, and a 50-sheet output tray for letter-sized documents. It's backed with a one-year limited warranty. What's in the Box Features Reviews (9)
If one of the cartridges goes out, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING! Supposedly the fax doesn't even work. Huh? This is an obvious attempt that they just want you to buy buy buy more cartridges than you need. I only use the black. I have never touched the colors. But for some reason, the colors run out before the black. What the...? And now they want me to replace everything before the machine will be usable again. I looked at the colors, and it clearly still has A LOT of ink or whatever inside. And there isn't a way to fool the machine by just taking it out and putting it back in. I'm really thinking about just filling it with toilet water to let the machine think there's something inside. Don't know if it'll work. But here's the bottom line. I ran through the whole set (or the machine thinks I did) of ink in 4 months. So here's what you need to know. It costs about $80 or so to replace the set. So do you really want to pay $240 a year just to use the fax machine? If you actually do some printing, think $400+. This is lame. Fellow users. Anyone have suggestions please help us all.
1) The printer will not print if it thinks one of the ink cartridges is empty, which happens often when they are not empty: it has happened to me with nearly new cartridges. It essentially renders the device useless. Anyone know how to work around this? Please post a review if you do. 2) The paper feeder does not pick up paper unless I manually hold my finger against the tension arm. Clearly inconvenient, especially if you want to receive faxes.
You can't beat the price tag ... with 5-in-1 capabilities. While this is not a photo-quality printer, it is great for office use. At this price, it offers 4 separate inkwells that can be purchased separately based on your level of usage -- not offered by the competition. Please note that the Amazon product description which says that the product includes a handset is incorrect. The unit is a breeze to set up as copier, printer, outgoing fax, scanner and PC Fax (set aside 30mins, max). However, setting this up for incoming faxes when you have an answering machine on the same line is very difficult because it is not completely documented (Solution: Set TAD, and set number of rings for receive to 1. Also, don't have any filters installed on the answering machine outlet and fax outlet). While the hold time when I called Brother Customer Service was more than 45 mins, once I got thru, they were able to resolve this issue thoroughly and courteously. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!
