5-0 out of 5 stars Hassle Free
I was renting the Motorola SB3100 and replaced it with this model. Installation was as simple as calling the cable company with the new MAC address, plugging in the cables, and turning on the computer.

Now that I will not be paying a monthly modem rental, this modem will pay for itself in just a few months.

This modem also has a couple features that the SB3100 did not. It is upgradeable to DOCSIS 1.1 and it has a standby button that allows you to cut your computer from the internet without powering down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good
I had read the excellent Amazon reviews on Motorola SB4200 and decided to go with one. After I bought it, I plugged my cable service to my USB outlet on the modem, given my MAC and SN id to Comcast and voila within 5 mts, i was up and running. Its been excellent so far. Although, the only glitch (that i have yet to figure out) is that the Activity LED for some reason will stop blinking and my internet connectivity will enter a "freeze" state upon which i have to power off/on my modem. I cannot seem to ping my DHCP gateway during this state. Not sure if this is the Comcast or a Motorola glitch. Upon powering back on though, service is restored. I have had to do this atleast once a day. This is regardless of whether i use the STANDBY feature. I am hoping there is an easy fix for this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless.
I returned the cable company's rent-a-modem 2 hours after unpacking the Motorola. I have dynamic IP svc (unfortunately), so all that was required for setup was plugging it in and rebooting. (A call to the cable service was required to register the unit MAC ID). The DOCSIS 1.0 certification assures you it will work with most any cable provider, and the downloadable upgrade to DOCSIS 1.1 standard is simple. Also, I like the choice of ethernet (RJ14) or USB connectivity and the new "standby" switch. Lastly, the internal transformer means the power plug is a normal size, so it can be plugged in on my desk without hogging the whole powerstrip. Nice modem, nice price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended.
I purchased this modem when I signed up for broadband Internet (cable) service. I have been using it for about two years now. I have never encountered any problems and it has never failed to function. The security "disconnect" function button on the top is a good idea. As a security precaution, I usually "disconnect" when I am not actually using my connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trustworthy modem
I bought this modem over a year ago as an alternative to giving the cable company even more of my money via renting on of theirs. Ever since I plugged it in and got it activated it has given me zero problems. The only time it hasn't worked, it was because the internet itself was down.
I like the button on the modem that disconnects you from the internet. It takes maybe a second to connect/disconnect you and protect your computer from any unsavory types who are lurking out there.
I bought a new pc a few months ago and plugged in the modem and it was ready to go right then.
If you're forgoing the $5/mo. rental from your ISP, this baby pays for itself in about 18 months ... or less. And if you move, you can keep the thing, you don't have to give it back to the cursed cable co. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Works, but documentation and compatibility problems
I would say that this product is good, but poorly documented. I have two Windows 98 laptops. I bought this card and a Linksys wireless router. Got the Linksys routing my broadband connection with physical lines, and configured the wireless through its firewall. Then I installed the Motorola Wireless Lan Adapter PCMCIA card in my faster Win 98 laptop. It saw the router, and was able to 'connect', but it did not associate an IP address. For it to truly work, Windows should have used it to connect to the router and pick up an IP address. It took me several hours to, very closely, RTFM (Read the _ Manual) and realize that coverage was for Windows 98 _SE_, something I assumed would apply to Windows 98 as well. Now I am in the position of 1) returning said Lan adapter, which physically seems to work well, 2) Spending $100+ upgrading Windows 98 (which works), 3) Switching to Linux for laptop (which may or may not have a Motorola driver anyway.) I think it would have been very helpful for Motorola to distribute either a compatibility patch, or mention very clearly on the package, that plainjane windows 98 does NOT work. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars how embarrassing for motorola!
I picked up a pair of these just before a long roadtrip thinking that we could use them to talk between cars, but on every point they came up weak.
Range: Even in GMRS mode these things couldn't talk between two cars no more than a half mile apart in clear sight of each other.
Clarity: horrible - I couldn't understand the speech most of the time.
Two other features that were troublesome were the inability to lock a channel/code combination and the big dumb volume control which invariably dialed down to zero every time we put the radios in our pockets.
Battery: I picked up the optional two-radio drop-in charger and the batteries were NiCd instead of the much better and longer life (and no memory) NiMH that everyone else uses and the charger was a dumb trickle charger, not a smart charger that actually told you when the radios were charged.
Conclusion: What a joke. If I were Motorola I'd track down everyone who bought these, apologize personally and give them a real radio and a real charging system. I'm going with Cobra next time, which is sad since my t6320 was such a great radio.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendous audio quality/clarity
Audio quality is so bad, it's nearly impossible to understand the caller. I bought a pair and promptly returned them. My advice: save yourself the return postage and choose a different pair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Motorola T5820 2-Way Radio NiCd
I bought these to keep in touch with my friends snowboarding, and paintballing. I would have been better off paying for airtime on my cell phone instead of purchasing these. The audio quality on these are average to poor at best. They are not what I expected fom the Motorola corporation. A great disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ooooppppssss !!!!
Please don't buy this radio. It's range is about the same as an FRS and it's very hard to understand what your partner is saying. I have the T-5200 Talkabout radio witch is a much better radio.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor audio quality!
I purchased a pair of Motorola T5820 radios to keep in touch with my children playing in the neighborhood. I was expecting a high-quality product from the likes of Motorola. Boy was I wrong! The audio clarity of these radios is terrible... to the point that you cannot understand the other party. Audio quality is muffled, muddy, and distorted. Also annoying is the fact that when you key the mic, there is a slight delay (~500ms) before the other radio's squelch is opened resulting in the first few syllables lost during transmission. Being an amateur radio (ham) operator, I am very familiar with the operation of hand-held radios. With these radios I found myself continuously saying "please repeat..." to the other party. Steer clear of these radios! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Features
I've been using this phone for about a week now and am very hapy with it. I especially love the fact that you can have a different ring tone for people in your phone book. I always hated jumping up for the phone only to see that it was a telemarketer. Now I know when to jump and when to ignore.

There are a few cons: I also don't like that the base and handset don't talk to eachother (you have to program each separately and erase call logs separately). And, my old cordless silenced the ringing headset when I pressed "off." Unfortunately this one doesn't do that. However, the ringer is much more pleasant and can be programmed to different volumes/tones.

Overall, I'm very happy with my new phone. I've gone through numerous cordless/caller ID/answering machine combos and this is definitely the best so far. Hopefully it will last longer than the others. :-)

Just to add a note to another user's post... you CAN hear messages as they are being left (screen calls). I almost didn't buy the phone because of this comment, but was happy to find that it was not true.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone -- Neat Features and Highly Recommended
I've searched for quite a while to find a phone with all of these great features and the Motorola definitely wins hands down.

Motorola really has thought of everything on this phone and gotten all the details just right:

-- There is a speakerphone built right into the handset that works incredibly well. Friends can barely tell I'm on a handset speakerphone. Really helpful when you're trying to talk and write/type.

-- You can see that you have messages on the handset and then listen to them without going to the base. This is great so that I don't have to run downstairs all the time just to hear messages.

-- You can using the intercom to page someone around the house. You can even use it as a baby monitor if you need.

-- Add callers to your phone book quickly and easily using Caller ID.

In general, the phone feels sturdy and comfortable. The rubber sidegrips are great. And the usability is great -- lots of features, but not too hard to figure them out. And finally, battery life that seems decent compared to some others (like my old AT&T cordless which never could hold a charge).

3-0 out of 5 stars Broke in 32 days!
When I got this phone, I loved it. It has different rings, intercom, hands free, etc... I replaced all the phones in my house with the expandable phones that you can purchase. I spent alot of money doing this. After a little over a month, the "on" button on the phone stopped working. I tried returning it to the store, it was over a month since I had purchased it, so they told me to go to Motorola. Motorola told me to send in the whole phone, charger and all in to Motorola. Shipping paid by me. Now the other phones in my house are useless until I get the replacement in from the company. I hope this helps! Good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Best Features -- Worst Quality
I bought the Motorola MD400 series phone because it has more features than any other cordless, including telling you when the line is in use (even by another brand phone).

But, as I've read elsewhere, the battery life is abismal. Within an hour of talk time, you can run the batteries down, compared to about 5 hours with Panasonic. After the first phone call, the battery level drops a notch!

Not a fluke. I exchanged this phone three times! But the battery life was the same. So I called Motorola who sent me a new battery, agreeing that the life is too short (obviously, this person never tested their own product). Same result. Poor battery life AND there is a constant static noise in the background -- more than the average cordless. Furthermore, the Motorola almost seems to compress the audio so that the end of some words fades out making it difficult to understand the caller. I'VE READ ALL THREE OF THESE ISSUES ELSEWHERE by other would-have-been customers.

Great features, but lousy quality. This last exchange is going back for good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Overall
After reading the mixed reviews, I decided to take a chance on this phone. I like it. It has all the features I want and the quality so far is good.

The pro's:
I have a silent OGM, and can screen incoming calls.
Speakerphone on handset and base.
Can control the answerer (even on/off feature) from the handset.
Voicemail indicator on handset and base.
Formatting of phone numbers in caller ID (7, 10, 11-digit).
Rubber on the sides of phone make it very comfortable to hold.

The con's:
The voice quality is good for the handset and base, but messages are touch and go. Sometimes they are good, sometimes not so good. But the phone number and time/date stamp is there, so I will know who is calling, so I can live with that.
Also, on my old Uniden, I could select a different ring for EACH phone number I stored. With this, I can only set one ring for all the people in my phone book. Again, I can live with that.

Overall, I really like this phone. Other than the individual caller ringtones, it has everything I want. I was overwhelmed when I started looking for a replacement cordless, I even researched Consumer Reports along with Amazon. I wasn't sure because Motorola is not a known name to me for in-house phones, but since I love thier cellular's, I decided to give them a try. I am really impressed.

Also, if you get this phone, please do call the phone company if the voicemail indicator is not showing. I had to call several Motorola numbers, and finally got a live person who told me to call the phone co. to get it straightened out. Once that issue was settled through the phone co., I was fine.

I have wireless 2.4ghz internet and there is no interference.

Based on the base and cordless performance so far, I am going to get the additional cordless handsets.

I would recommend it to others. I won't know if I would buy it again, until it has lasted as long as my 5-year old corded AT&T 1845, which is still going good! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Motorola's DCP501 home-theater system not only simplifies the hookup of everything from cable TV to VCRs and satellite receivers--it also unifies audio and video media playback and amplification within one easy-to-use device. The DCP501 combines the functions of a digital cable receiver, a DVD/CD/MP3 player, a 100-watts-per-channel surround receiver, and an AM/FM stereo receiver. For DVD viewing with immersive, high-quality surround sound, just add speakers and a television. The plug-n-play unit supports Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, and Pro Logic II surround formats.

For cable reception, the DCP501's 50 to 860 MHz tuner supports clear analog, 64 and 256 QAM clear and encrypted digital cable services. Where available, the tuner is also compatible with Motorola-enabled digital cable services in both two-way and telephone-return cable systems. (It also supports Motorola DCT2000 digital cable applications.) The receiver's high-performance, Tripath Class-T audio amplifiers deliver 100 watts to all five main channels (left, center, right, and left/right surround), while built-in preamplifier outputs let you use the device as a preamplifier with a more powerful stereo or multichannel power amplifier.

Extensive inputs and outputs include front-panel audio/video hookups for a camcorder or gaming console, including a Toslink optical input for a direct digital-audio hookup with an external device. Two additional digital-audio inputs are found on the back panel (one each optical and coaxial), and an onboard NTSC decoder uses a digital adaptive comb filter to upconvert all composite-video signals to S-video for use with higher-resolution S-VHS VCRs and compatible TVs.

Crucially, any video input source can be converted and/or channeled to any of the three video outputs for maximum convenience when using the DCP501 with a VCR, DVR (digital video recorder), or other device.

What's in the Box
DCP501 cable-ready home theater system, a universal remote control, remote batteries, a self-install kit, FM/AM antennas, six-foot composite-video/analog audio interconnect, six-foot S-video cable, six-foot coaxial video cable, and a user's manual. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of features in a small package, but ...
I bought this device mostly on the Motorola name and the incredible discount. Overall, I am happy with this device. It sounds good, looks good, and I haven't had a problem with it yet. My biggest gripe is that the front panel display is quite difficult to read from even a few feet away, especially during the day. If the display were larger and brighter I would be much happier with this device. This problem could have been mitigated with more "on-screen" info coming through the TV, but the DCP puts very little info on-screen. For example, when changing TV channels I would like to see the channel number displayed on the TV, but the DCP501 doesn't do that. It will tell me the volume, but not the channel- it's a little odd that way. Dolby digital works as it should. I don't need the MP3 feature but it is nice to have. Not Earth-shattering audio power, but good considering that it's integrated. In short, I got a nice AM/FM tuner, CD/DVD player, home theater system, for a great price. I think this M S R P'd for a little under n in e hun dred, but I got it for about t wo f if ty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tired of the same old telephone ring, over and over?
Well, if you have a hunter in your house...liven things up for him or her. Don't tell them you bought this, cut the ringer to "Elk" or "Bear" and have someone call about 3 AM...have your camcorder ready!!! This phone is great! My kids love the different "animal" rings and it does create a little variety in daily incoming phone calls. Although, it's hard to adjust to knowing when you hear the "Turkey" it means you need to answer the phone. Great conversation piece. Only the base makes sounds...not the handset. The handset will only ring....when off the base. When on the base....you get "ducks, coyotes, geese, owls, cougars, etc." (Base makes sounds even when handset is somewhere else) Or you can set it to a normal ring. Enjoy! Perfect for b-days and x-mas! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Motorola Sprint GT
We have used them for three years vevery day in our Auto Salvage business. They have enough chanels that we can program them to work in busy metro area without getting lots of bleed over from other radios. Our guys are very hard on them so we seem to get about a year out of them. Inside employees radios are still fine after three years.
