1-0 out of 5 stars There are additional things to buy to use this!! Beware!!
We purchased this set of radios for a Christmas present, and based on the description provided...the impression is that "everything's included", right? Wrong. We did receive the radios, and the rechargeable batteries and chargers were in a seperate little box, but thrown in with the radios in the Amazon box. (Should have known something was not right when we saw that) We inserted the batteries, and then immediately tried to hook them up to the chargers, only to find out the chargers are NOT compatible with the radios. They don't fit! We called Midland directly to find out if we were doing something wrong...and they informed us that the chargers included with this set only work if you BUY MORE DEVICES TO PLUG THEM INTO!!! They also indicated that they can only assume that Amazon does not know this and is selling it all as a package. Unless you plan on going out and spending more money on another accessory, stay away from this particular "deal". Waste of money and time. Amazon did issue us a refund...so kudos to them for that--but more importantly I think they need to revise or remove this item as it is very deceiving.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Adapter Yet!
I took my chance on gettings these radios hopeing that they
would surely have the problem fixed buy now. I received them today and had forgot about the reviews about the missing adapters until I tried to charge them. Sure hope they get the problem fixed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Missing adapters
I too was missing the adapters. While they have pointed me to Midland I don't think I should have to be the one to talk to them and solve this. If this hadn't happened before, I would be more understanding, but obviously from the last poster's comments... it has... more than once.

This definately puts a ding in my otherwise unblemished dealings with amazon over the last 4 years.

Be warned that if you get this set, you may have one more step before they will work.

5-0 out of 5 stars CAUTION! Amazon not shipping needed adapters!
I give this product five stars without having even tried it. I got it a few days ago, and plugged in the wall chargers to the radios, in the only holes where the plugs would fit. After literally 3 days of "charging", I still couldn't get the displays up or make calls. I just phoned Midland about it, and their tech asked me right away just *where* I was plugging in the chargers. When I told him, he asked if I'd gotten the set from Amazon. Yes, so? "You are the second customer who's called who didn't get the needed 18301 adapters to go on the ends of the plugs so they can fit into the smaller of the two ports". Midland is shipping me 2 of them free of charge (otherwise $4.95 each plus s&h), so the company gets props from me. Amazon may well be shipping the adapters with some or most of these sets, but this time they didn't. Caveat emptor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Buy!!
An outstanding CB radio for my Jeep. For under $40, there is no reason to purchase a higher priced model for your portable needs. I would suggest a magnetic roof top mount antenna for increased reception. However, the factory antenna is adequate for 3 to 5 mile reception on level terrain. This model accepts ear buds which greatly extends battery life because you are able to monitor at much lower volume. A must for travelers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabuelous
This product will go through sleet or snow. It has 15 mile range and is a great deal. I can't believe how cheap it was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Performance at a fantastic price!
We ordered two of these Midland units through Amazon and LOVE them. We use them in tandem with friends on camping and road trips and have found them reliable, light, and providing great audio clarity plus weather reports. We also got rechargable batteries and a lapel mic unit (Radio Chack) which compliment the unit's versatility. Absolutely recommend it as a first-time buy or for a more seasoned user.

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy
This is a good item for travel, or camping, or even around the house because of the weather channels. I'm thinking of buying two more for my sons cars! I even use mine at work in the construction field just for the weather channels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Quality For an unbelievable price
I bought this CB radio about two months ago. i am a CB enthusiast and have been through many radios, i must say that this handheld radio is absolutely the best bet for anyone who is going on a trip or just want to have some fun, it his high powered and unbelievable features for its price. the PTT button or (push to talk button) on it is very nice you don't need much force to push it in and it clicks so u know you are transmitting. The weather radio is nice receives very nicely and for a handheld it gets out pretty far and if you buy an external antenna, u can add at least another 2 miles to the range of this radio. I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Made Performer
I belong to a hunting club where a group of 8 of us use this model and have used them for 3 years. I personally own 4 G-11s. This radio is well made (made in Korea not China as with almost all other brands). It has excellent sound both in and out and using 4AAA batteries has at least the same range as my Audiovox 1535. The option to use 3AAs will reduce your range. Our radios see heavy use during the hunting season and they've held up in bad weather and at least one took a 7 foot drop without damage. The only units that needed replacing were lost not broken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
I recently purchased the G-11 (pair) and must say that, for the price, they are well worth the money. After searching around for a pair of GMRS radios with similar features, the G-11 by Midland was by far the lowest priced. After field testing the ability of the G-11, I found it's performance acceptable even under less than perfect conditions when taking into consideration it's power output (2 watts max). For light recreational/business use, this radio is the one!

4-0 out of 5 stars No truth in advertising
The radio is OK, butI have a beef with the false advertsing. The bubble pack trumpets "FIVE-MILE range." But the owner's manual --which you can't read until after buying and opening the bubble pack (a jackhammer would be helpful for this) -- says "range UP TO FOUR MILES" And even this is conditioned on "clear, unobstructed terrain."

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
Great radio. Small and fits nicely in your hand. Execellent range, but the only way you will get 5 miles if you are in a clear unobstructed area. The sound quality beats a pair of cobra
900!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great radio, great price!
Great radio, compact, yet powerful. Water resistant, subchannels and digital codes make this a practical radio. The range is reported at 5 miles, but don't expect to get that distance in urban or crowed suburbs - its closer to 1.5 miles in these areas, and clear. The only down side with this radio is the required FCC license - $75 for a 5 year license, but the GMRS is definately the way to go when compared to the FRS radios for keeping a family in touch in the larger amusment parks. The license fee is a small price to pay for the added security of the radios' range. I checked all over the web and in sporting goods stores, and Amazon.com has the best price for this pair! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great little weather radio
I bought this Weaher radio after hours and hours of trying to find one that had a price that I could afford and the options (S.A.M.E.) that I wanted. I have to say that this radio has worked flawlessly. I went to the NOAA's website to get my county code, programmed it in and now I get nothing but alerts for the county I live in thanks to the S.A.M.E. technology. The NWS runs a Emergency Alert system test on it every Wednesday at 2:00pm in my area which lets me know that they are alive. It does take some playing around with to figure some things out, but nothing too complicated. This is a great weather radio and I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality manufacture
The wall-wart power supply was of poor quality, and on weaker signals there was an audible AC hum. When switching from Wx Radio to FM Broadcast below 93 Mhz I usually got a loud buzzing instead of the radio station. The phase-locked loop (PLL) did not lock. Tuning above 93 Mhz and then down would allow reception but who wants a radio that acts that way. (I mostly listen to NPR at 91.1 Mhz.) The round "selector" dial was rough to operate and felt like a rusty wheel, requiring a little more force than necessary. Side volume control was rough in operation. As far as I can tell there was no way to actually turn it off, so if it were unplugged the batteries would exhaust themselves...

The N.W.S. Weather radio broadcasts and S.A.M.E encoding are great. It's a shame I can't find a good quality receiver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well
This seems to work as advertised. One feature that has not been mentioned is that you can add up to 3 new SAME alert codes. This may be useful in the future for new codes for warnings, AMBER alerts, etc. On the con side, I tried to wall mount the radio about four feet high. It is difficult for a 6 foot person to read the LCD display at that height. I think the LCD's just are not easily seen unless you look at them almost straight on. But when I put the radio on a desk, it was much easier to read the LCD display.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well
I have had this weather radio for a couple of years. Having specific area message encoding is very helpful and keeps it from going off for disturbances in neighboring counties. It is relatively easy to program, but it helps to have the directions available. One must go to the NOAA web site to get the county codes, so access to the internet is needed to program it.
Recomended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works as promised
This package does everything it is suppossed to do. I've used the radios mostly in very rugged, deep canyons and have had no problem communicating. They have surived brief dunks when their owner has lost his footing fording streams. The radios seem to hold a signal better than some of the other brands I've tried. The recharger can be used with the included AAA NiCad batteries when they are in the units, or you can take the batteries out and charge them w/ another battery charger. This is great if you need to rotate battery sets so you have constant use of the radios. The units also work with regular AAA and rechargeable NiMH batteries, so you have lots of options. The automatic power stand-by feature is a big plus and significantly extends the working life of the batteries. The only negative I have is that the call button is too much, it sounds like a fire alarm going off. If you're looking for a pair of FRS radios with a charger look no further, this is the best setup for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
The radios work great. As with all products that use rechargeable batteries, you get little advance notice as to when the batteries are about to die on you. The only thing I don't like about this product is the charging time for batteries. 10 hours for NiCads and 16 hours for NiMH. You cannot leave the radios in the charger after they are charged, so you have to keep track of time.

I was able to use these radios in Disneyland and with the digital codes available, I heard no interference from other yokels also with radios. (Even though they could still hear me.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great radios, average charger
Summary: I give the radios 4.5 stars, and the charger only 3 stars. The radios compare favorably with high-end FRS radios, but at a mid-range price. (For what it's worth, I've never seen an FRS radio I would give 5 stars.)

I bought this set for me, then gave them to my nephews for Christmas. (I plan to buy myself another set soon.) The sound quality is excellent, and my nephews have used them with no dropouts while hiking and camping in the mountains (on Boy Scout outings).

The radios are designed as fairly traditional "walkie-talkie" radios, with a knob for volume and with the PTT on the side rather than on the face, so your don't talk to your thumb (as on those with the PTT on the face of the radio). Other features are accessed via menus and the LCD display.

The display is clear and easy to read, with one exception. The top row of indicators is very close to the upper bezel, so you may have to tip the radio away from you to read the top row.

The radios have only one call tone, but that's all that's needed. The digital coded squelch (DCS) and the more common CTCSS tone squelch make it easy to ignore undesired signals. (When using DCS, remember to wait 1 second between pushing the PPT and speaking, to allow the other radio's receiver to recognize the DCS.) The CTCSS codes are the same as on all the other radios with Tone Squelch, so they are interoperable. The DCS codes are uncommon, but are great when using just the 75515 and/or 75517 radios.

The VOX works well, but takes some practice to use properly (as VOX always does). Setting the VOX level is a bit finicky--it's done via the menu system--but it seldom needs to be changed once set.

The advertised "1694 codes" is actually the standard 14 channels, with 38 CTCSS codes and 83 DCS codes ( (38+83)*14=1694 ). Sometimes marketing dweebs just have to turn information into gibberish.

What's missing? A "silent" or "vibrator" ringer option in place of the audible call signal. Also, the charger is not "smart". It doesn't detect full charge and switch to trickle-charge, so you can't leave the radios in the plugged-in charger. Instead, charge them up, then unplug the charger to use it as a simple stand. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate a smart charger for these radios. (Doesn't mean there isn't one, though; just that I didn't locate one.) The radios also lack the "voice security" (voice scrambler) offered on some FRS radios, but the only practical purpose of that "feature" is to encourage people to transmit "private" information to the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great!
We took these radios to Disneyworld, and they worked great. My friends had cheaper models, with less codes, and their radios were awful in comparison. While they had to listen to Everybody;s transmissions, we were tuned in to our two radios only, like a private line, clear and easy to hear. However, when we tried to call and hear messages from our friends, I did have to deactivate the squelch (to get it back to the basic channel, without subcodes and digital subcodes), and I heard Everyone's transmissions as well, and that quality was substantially lower. Since the trip, I have sent the radios with kids on bike rides, and used them while shopping, to speed things up by sending the kids off for a loaf of bread or gallon of milk, and meet me at aisle 5. Works great.

1-0 out of 5 stars Midland 75515XLBPR 2-Way radios w/ Batteries & Charger
I was hopeful but greatly disappointed. Couldn't even communicate with family less than 1/2 mile aways with cracking, hissing and cutting out. No hills, electrical or other interferring objects. Greatly dissatisfied. Even more dissatisfied that I have to pay shipping to return something that doesn't work to begin with. This has been an all around discouraging transaction that makes me leery of internet purchases. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what you wanted!
I bought this radio on the bases it said it was usable with GMRS repeaters and had all of the ctcss codes. While this might be true, you can only use these features if the factory or a Midland Tech programmed it to do so. For the user who is used to doing his or her own programming and being able to change their radio as needed, this is not the radio for you, or me...

2-0 out of 5 stars Simply Poor
These radios seemed to be an attractive purchase given the rugged construction, their re-chargeable nature, and that they support both GMRS and FRS frequencies.

The fact is that there are no FRS compatible channels on these radios, that are evident. There is no mention of this capability in the owners manual that comes with each radio, which in itself is very poorly crafted.

Finally, each of the radios comes with a seperate charger. I ordered two radios with chargers. One didn't work at all.

Needless to say the were returned....

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of this radio
Opon recieving this radio I have found that all of the sale litterateur fails to mention one thing; that all of the radios features, channel spacing, busy cannel lockout, scan attack, scan resume times, transmit time out timer, power save cycle time, and most of all the ctcss/dcs codes are NON-USER PROGRAMABLE. So I say what's the point of having a radio with repeater capabilities if the end user can not even program the ctcss/dcs codes without having to go find a Midland Tech. to program the radio becouse he's the only one who has the software and computer interface to do it. What happens the next time you want to change the codes? Or any of the other radio features? Buyer Beware. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought these to use at an event - the reception wouldn't carry across the building, and when it did work the quality of the sound was pretty poor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Deal
I bought fifteen sets to use at our school. They've been knocked around and dropped and still work pretty good. Some of the units pick up a lot of static especially as the battery starts to run low. We still can't figure out all the features and the display. The displays are confusing and some of the features appear to be meaningless or possibly aren't working. The battery indicator doesn't seem to work consistently. Some of the transmit buttons are stubborn and have to be pressed HARD. One of the transmit buttons don't work at all. The belt clips pop off, (resulting in the unit hitting the floor) especially if you're fat and you bend over. Hah! Anyway, the bottom line is that for the cost, they've been serving their purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product for Price
This product has quite a number of things going for it. Firstly it's an excellent FRS radio with excellent range (have not been able to test the two mile range 'cause of my terrain), coupled with the headphone set it allows for ease of communication for a variety of purposes, I use it for security in-store as well and they work marvellously. Also, with the drop-in charger and rechargeable batteries the savings gained in the original great price is magnified 100X over a similar motorolla product, which does not even have battery rationing and is certaily not rechargeable! (these average 2AA batteries per day on continous use!) Ideal choice for the budget conscious shopper who wants a greater bang for the buck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product for the money
These radios have worked well for us under most conditions- at the lake, in Mexico, and car to car. The nice part about them is the rechargeable batteries and the included charger. The sound quality and range has been within acceptable limits for us, and has surprised us on occasion when they have been loud and clear thru forested areas and over hills. They have been subjected to jolts on the jet ski and minimal amounts of waterspray without apparent damage. They hold a charge for a long weekend. Overall we have been satisfied with the performance of these radios and feel they provide good performance at a fair price. My only (minor) complaint is that I have to consult the owner's manual to understand some of the various functions as the lettering near the buttons and dials is small and difficult to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Falls far short of the mark
With twin boys of 11 and a 14 year old daughter, having this relatively inexpensive technology is certainly better than not having it. But I'm afraid that's the best I can say about these radios. I live in a typical residential neighborhood. Living just 8 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean I expected just "half" the advertised range of 2 miles, but disappointed I was. Less than 5 blocks down the road squelch covers the kids audio without 'any' adverse conditions. I purchased two sets (4) radios. The only reason why I don't return them is because I suspect the rated 2 miles is just a farce. They get a rating of 3 for the technology, but performance couldn't possibly rise above a 1. Sorry folks! ... Read more
