Amazon.com Review

CBs are practical safety and information devices, but their bulk usually relegates them to being installed in pickups and other large vehicles. With Midland's 77-104XL, all of your excuses for adding a CB to your vehicle evaporate. Although it comes with a convenient full-size microphone, a standard jack for an external antenna, and other features found on larger units, this CB radio measures less than 5 inches wide, 6.5 inches deep, and 1.5 inches thick. That's small enough to find a home in almost any vehicle.

Installing the 77-104XL requires some familiarity with your car's wiring, and although the included instructions are well written, the novice will want to enlist the help of a professional to avoid shorting out any part of the vehicle's electrical system. The 77-104XL comes with a mounting bracket, and you should be prepared to drill some small holes in the bottom of your dash to install it.

In our tests of the 77-104XL, the unit performed well when connected to a large Midland antenna that we were also testing. The full-size microphone was easier to handle than the miniature ones that come with similar portable radios, and the sound quality of the 77-104XL was as good as could be expected from its aging AM technology. The large rubber-coated knobs that are used to tune channels, adjust volume, and control squelch were very easy to use.

The rear of the 77-104XL has two jacks for connecting an external speaker and a PA speaker, and a switch on the front let us easily switch between CB and PA modes. Another switch on the front enables or disables the built-in ANL technology, which can reduce static, although we never had a need for the switch. A bright green LCD displays the currently tuned channel and is flanked by other LEDs that illuminate when you transmit or receive.

Novice users will enjoy the 77-104XL's quality and performance, and advanced users will enjoy all the extra features Midland has included. Basically, this is a full-featured CB squeezed into a relatively small and attractive package, and anyone thinking about permanently adding a CB radio to their vehicle should seriously consider this capable alternative. --T. 3-0 out of 5 stars INSTALLATION TO POWER SOURCE
THIS PRODUCT IS GREAT I'M SURE BUT FOR ONE CATCH...YOU HAVE TO HARD WIRE THE CB RADIO TO THE AUTO'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM YOURSELF. PERHAPS NOT A PROBLEM FOR SOME BUT FOR OTHERS (MYSELF INCLUDED)IT IS I AM SURE. IT IS MY FAULT THAT I DID NOT NOTICE THIS IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PRIOR TO ODERING. I JUST WANTED A CB RADIO THAT I COULD PLUG INTO THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER AND GO. THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF CB UNIT. FOR THIS REASON ALONE I RETURNED THE UNIT TO AMAZON.COM SO NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE CB ITSELF ....JUST BE AWARE THAT ONE HAS TO WIRE THE UNIT TO THE AUTO AND NOT JUST PLUG INTO A LIGHTER....

1-0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing.
I had two of these units from Amazon with the same identical problem. The channel selector turned and clicked but did not change the channel. I also own the Midland 77-092, which is actually a cheaper model, but I've not had any problems with it, and am completely satisfied. You may want to consider that model from Amazon instead of the 77-104XL.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm pleased
The CB is just what i expected. It's not very clear in the description but it DOES have a PA switch and output. The best part is, I got it in three days!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all for the money
This is definitely a good find for 40 dollars. My friend has one in his 92 Ford Probe and it is great for talking to other people on long highway trips, finding out where there are road hazards from the truck drivers, and other misc. uses. It does not come with the antenna but for 40 dollars you can easily go and buy one for 20 bucks at a local radio shack or pick one up at a garage sale for 5 or so. This is not a top of the line unit, but for a regular cb user this is perfect. If you have ever considered getting a cb...get this one NOW! Hope to hear you on the air-waves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
After having problems with the model made by Oregon Scientific I purchased this model from Amazon. I'm in Texas, so a reliable weather radio is a must and this product hasn't disappointed me.

I can, however, understand a couple of the points made by other reviewers, If you were driving across the country it may be a bit difficult to program and reprogram the SAME codes as you move from location to location, but I would think that you could get the hang of it after a few changes.

Overall, I would highly recommend this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two radios - none worked
Programming the radio can be a little tricky but if you follow the instructions, it's pretty easy to setup. I picked up one of these due to the crap weather coming through the Atlanta metro area. First one I got refused to work! Called Midland tech support and they told me that everything was configured properly! They guessed it was defective so they sent me a replacment inside a week and the same - no NWS alerts picked up! All duds?? Who knows, but I'm asking for my money back!
It looks good but doesn't work!

1-0 out of 5 stars Had to throw it away
This was hands down the worst consumer electronics product that I've ever owned. The menu system is unintuitive, and I could never imagine myself ever being able to fully use the unit without the manual nearby. The unit appeared cheaply made and after about 6 months, the unit wouldn't even power up. I ended up just throwing it away. Pick another product in this category!

1-0 out of 5 stars Who wrote the users manual
Programming this radio is very difficult. There is nothing logical about this process or the manual. Turning off the alarm functions are even more confusing and I'm not sure why they are even included. Battery life is very poor. Even though the batteries are rechargable the maximum life is two days. To make matters worse once the batteries discharge you have to reprogram the radio and don't loose the manual you won't get too far without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Midland 74-250 Great Radio For A Great Price
This little radio is well worth the money for all the features it has. It has good reception, it is compact and lightweight, audio and visual alerts (text or red flashing LED) & you can listen to NWS radio alerts and broadcasts also. 2 alarms w/snooze, digital thermometer w/alarm, date & time and S.A.M.E. technology w/battery saver features that can be set so it will cause it turn on only during an alert. For all the features it has, no other radio can beat the price. The only negatives are that it has no DC adapter capability and that it does take some time and practice to program. I would definitely recommend this radio to anyone that needs a weather radio that they can take anywhere with them. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Combining the power of General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) with the convenience of Family Radio Service (FRS), the Midland G-15 two-way radio offers powerful, easy communication with family and friends.

The Midland G-15 UHF/FM two-way radio features a total of 15 GMRS/FRS channels with up to a five-mile line-of-site range with GMRS channels. The clear, backlit LCD display offers easy reading in low-light conditions. The G-15 radio also features a removable, flexible antenna, key lock to prevent accidental channel changes, and vibrating call alert.

The hands-free VOX feature has six levels of sensitivity, enabling you to set how loud you need to talk to activate the VOX circuit. By activating the VOX you only have to talk into the front of the radio or use an optional headset to make the radio transmit.

The Midland G-15 incorporates 38 CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) codes and 83 DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) codes that, when activated, prevent you from hearing other radios that aren't communicating on the same subcode. These codes do not make your conversation private. If you are using the G-15 where interference from other radios or electrical devices are present, enabling the CTCSS or DCS codes will usually mute the interference.

The G-15 is powered by a rechargeable NiMH battery and comes with a drop-in desktop charger.

Important note to customers: All two-way radios that use GMRS frequencies require an FCC license. For licensing information and applications (form Nos. 605 and 159), call the FCC forms hotline at (800) 418-FORM or check online at www.fcc.gov. 4-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
The GMRS midland radio is great and the radiohas nice features and good rangebut this radio has bad bad battery life. I bought this radio and still have it but i had to go out and buy new rechargable batteries. i found that this radio workes the best in the feild with regular AA batteries. i have used other radios because i own a radio repair and rental company i use these radios in the shop. they are great.

2-0 out of 5 stars please tell me why ?
if this walkie talkie is so good and the price is just to low to show then why there is no description of the walkie talkie...i mean does it go 5 miles....? can i hook up ear phones to it for free hand ablities ? do it have privacy channels ? how many channels does it have ?
why none of that stuff is shown....?
Are they trying to sell the walkie talkie ?

1-0 out of 5 stars No range

4-0 out of 5 stars strongly recommended
Quality
I had these for about 2 weeks. Where shall I start: Maybe to say that they are very handy and the overall impression is that you have a rock solid product of quality in your hand. The manual that comes with it explanes everything clearly and in 10 min you are set to go. You've got all the options of connection external accessories, like intercom and Headset/Mic Jacks (VOX); which I personally don't need.

Manufacture defect - and how to fix it
I have to tell you though that this is already the second pair I got and the new ones I got had exactly the same defect like the first pair. The squelch of just one radio was adjusted too sensitive, so that it would turn itself one every few seconds without receiving a signal.
Because I didn't want to send the 2nd pair back, I call the TechService of Midland and they talked me through. Here is the simple procedure to adjust squelch sensitivity which worked perfectly well for me:
- Losen the 2 screws on the back of the radio and another 2 in the battery compartment
- pull off the on/off switch by simply pulling it vertically of and away from the radio (you don't have to twist)
- pull the back of the radio carefully off (don't rip off the wires that are connected to the front part)
- put the batteries back in the batterie compartment and turn the radio on
- in the middle of front part of the radio you will find 3 screws; the closest to the on/off switch is the one to adjust the squelch
- turn the screw slowly to find the spot where the squelch turns itself on (the point where the hissing sound turns on)
- from that point turn the srew 1/4 of a rotation clockwise
- Put everything back together and ... you are set.

Battery size and operating time
To me a more important aspect to consider is the kind of batteries you wanna use. I do have some other gadgets like a GPS, torches and a GameBoy ... wich all run on AA Batteries and I wanna stick with one kind of rechargeable batteries. I'm not very much of an electrician but I'm pretty sure that the 3xAA at 1.800mAh (NiMH) give you the edge over the 4xAAA at 700mAh (NiMH). On an camptrip I had them on for over 30 hrs at High Power, was talking regularly and they didn't give in. If it helps any they drain at 65 mha (for the electricians of you). The Battery extender you can forget about. You have to switch manually to 'low power' which reduces your transmitting range dramatically. But range is what you wanna have in the first place otherwise you would have bought yourself a FSR radio. So I don't see much use in it.

Transmission range
The most important category is the range to transmit and receive signals. The power they operate at is 2 watts, a considerable advandtage over the equaly solid build Motorolas at only 1 watt (only the more [spendy] Motor. operate at 2 w). I ran several test on them. The result is that in an urban area -me driving in a car between buildings and my wife in the house- we were able to communicate at a distance of 2mls. The same situation, only me in the car in the open field, it was about 4.5mls. The most impressiv performance though is in the straight line of sight. My friends on the campground and me in the car (w/o any external antenna attached to the radio), I couldn't believe my ears when I tried to contact them 6.8mls away and picked up strong and clear signals (all distances exactly measured by GPS). This proves that the company-claimed 7mls over sea is not exaggerated. The signal quickly deteriorates to under 2mls thought, when mountains are in between.

Price and recommendation
Finally the price: I'm absolutely sure that you won't find any better for this price. I would ever buy 'em again even considering the minor factory defect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Midland 222-p radio pair
I bought 2 pairs of these radios because of their great price. They are built well, and are easy to use. All the features you would need, and they are more compact and powerfull than Motorola's. On the downside each set came slightly unadjusted, which caused them to squelch every 5 seconds. Midland handled it well by walking me through a simple process to readjust them over the phone. With the great features for the price I would buy them again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Follow up review after 1 year
Everything I wrote about this unit one year ago is true, just that they are not built to last. I used them every other weekend while I was riding my ATV. OK lot's of shaking and dust but still I had expected them to last a bit longer. First the clip, than the speaker button - both of them fell literally apart.
Hard to find a quality unit. Other manufactures are not any better. I do believe that those FSR and GMRS units are generally built cheap. O.K. considering the price you still might wanna give'em a shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Secret little walkie talkie with great performance!
Yes this is a basic radio but it has a 2 watt output and the best penatration for difficult city buildings. I use this radio at work and find it works in NYC's buildings better than an motorola, audiovox that I have tried. The radio has all the features you are looking for and the only negative is that it goes through batteries on the 2 watt mode. (I use Nickle Metal Hydride)

5-0 out of 5 stars Report six months later

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Radio
We have purchased Motorola, Kenwood and now like the Midland 75-440 best. Best channel selection, call feature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not simple for users
This radio sounds good at first, but you will need to get an FCC license to operate this radio legally. Most people in the "FRS" market really don't need the extra power, cost and hassle of GMRS. So I'd label this radio "don't try this at home", unless you are a serious GMRS user. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Radio - Great Range
When I received this radio I was a little wary, but after some initial tests, I found this to be one great radio. The range was spectacular, and the clarity was outstanding. I have tried many radios, but have never experienced one this great. Get the optional battery pack, you will not be disappointed. I use this ATVing every weekend and it makes communication very easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Two-Way Radios!
Finally there is a great two-way radio out there.
Took it out with a some frineds when we went caraving during the 4th of July weekend and they were great. We talked well over 5 miles vehicle to vehicle. You can purchase an optional Battery Charger (strongly reccommended) because it comes with the vehicle adapter so you never run out of batteries. Well here is my review.

1) Easy to use.
2) Loud speaker audio.
3) The extra power really gives the extra range.
4) Awesome BeltClip, the best one I've seen so far.
5) Its got a vibrate mode, and a silent mode.
6) Also has a weather radio built into it, which is great when you are camping or out on the road.
7) The three year warranty.

Overall they are a very good buy, we had two pairs with batteries and chargers and they worked great during our trip. I would reccommend to anyone. ... Read more
