1-0 out of 5 stars Lemon!
I bought two of these. One died after 3 months, so I sent it in to get fixed. When I got it back it worked well. Now they are both broke. The good news is that Microtek is replacing them with a new model(c593). Hopefully that one works better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Monitor Died
The monitor performed well, screen was crisp and clean and bright, but it died after two months of service. Tech Support is a toll number that is no longer in service. Despite the three year warranty, it will be a challenge to get this repaired, not to mention the inconvenience. I would recommend another unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars very blurry at 800 x 600
Although the 1024 x 768 res at 75 Hz produces a relatively crisp picture with incredible color, the lower 800 x 600 res is very blurry. I plan to compare other lcd monitors in the next few days and will quite likely return this monitor. Otherwise, the monitor has great controls, looks very sweet, is very stable with its well-designed pedestal base, is a fine gray/silver color, and uses at most the power a 30-watt light bulb pulls. ... Amazon.com Review

Ideally suited for small home businesses with a variety of scanningneeds, the Microtek ScanMaker 4700 combines speed, sharp images, and brilliantcolors in an easy-to-use single-pass scanner. It offers 1,200 x 2,400 dpioptical resolution (9,600 x 9,600 dpi interpolated), 42-bit color depth, aflatbed with a full 8.5-by-11.7 inch scanning area, and a software packagedesigned to meet the needs of most serious users. You can connect the scannervia either a USB or SCSI port on PC or Macintosh computers.

Most modern scanners include software that is easy to install, and this is trueof the 4700 as well. From the start of setup, we especially liked the fastinstallation and easy-to-read instructions with minimal fluff. We highlyrecommend following the enclosed and very logical reference guide for thefastest trouble-free installation. It took us 15 minutes to go from opening thebox to scanning. We think novices will appreciate the brief step-by-steptutorial that walks you through basic operations, including scanning photos andusing optical character recognition. Since the tutorial is a printed version, you can easily refer back to it whenever you need to.

In our tests, editing and enhancing images was a snap with Microtek'sScanWizard5 software, which provided a simple and straightforward approach tonavigating through a variety of scanning tasks. All of our choices (input andoutput type, resolution, color depth, and so on) were onscreen for easyselection. We enlarged wallet-size photos to 8 by 10 inches while maintainingtheir image clarity. We scanned 35mm slides and filmstrips with the LightLidadd-on component, producing mixed results, as this scanner did not yield thehigh-resolution images we've seen from systems with built-in film-scanningcapabilities.

For text documents, the Trellix Web Microtek Edition and OCR software assistedin reading scanned text and easily reconfiguring and editing images. Pressinganother button accessed the copying feature for quick copies. Then, with a clickof the third button, we delivered our scanned documents to e-mail and a printer. All of these operations were immediately intuitive or easily mastered with onlya little practice.

The ScanMaker 4700 is a solid workhorse, measuring 20 by 11.4 by 4.6 inches yetweighing only 8 pounds. Its sturdy but readily transportable design and cleanthree-button operation make it a good all-purpose scanner. --BarbaraPrice

5-0 out of 5 stars Microtek 4700
I've owned this scanner for about 6 months. The hardware, including the 35 mm slide scanner, have been trouble free. Photo-quality scans are fast, made in a single-pass. Image quality is flawless. The included ScanWiz 5.0 software from Microtek is easy to use, with 2 interfaces: novice and expert. As stated on PC Magazine and ZD Net review sites, installation was problematic - I've never been able to get the (included) Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 to work with my 2-year old Dell running Win 98SE. Nonetheless, in the [price] range, the Scanmaker 4700 is a great value and I would highly recommend it for users willing to work around, or live with, the software installation issues.

2-0 out of 5 stars microtek - windows 95 beware
i purchased this scanner because of the dpi and the easy to use buttons on the front - however not being a "computer guru" didn't realize that you cannot use it if you have windows 95. the usb connection is not supported by windows 95. I am not sure how it works but wanted to warn others about the usb issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Scanner
It's cheap, and works perfect, it's fast, the software it's easy to handle, i have more than 2 months with it and i haven't had any problem, i allready scan all of my pictures, hundred's of them and still works perfect since the first day. Very easy to install no problems at all.
Excellent scanner, excellent price, and service at www.amazon.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner, a little slow.
The scanner is actaully good. It is very user friendly, at least what was my expereince. However, it is kind of slow with anything from pictures to files. However, for it's price it is a great scanner and you can do many cool tricks once you find out how to do them. Overall it is worth the money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Microtek does not stand behind what they sell- buy beware
After reading so many reviews now I am disappointed I bought a Mircrotek scanner. The software has a simple mode then a mode with more controlable features. The scanner never responded properly with the more complex mode so I just used the basic. It worked ok until the short warranty ran out. One day I turned it on, scanned one page and poof smoke started pouring out. After inspecting the inside for the cause, I found a transistor had 2 bad solder joints made by the factory that finally oxidized to point of failure and burned out several components. Contacted Microtek by email for parts. They would not sell me any parts but wanted me to spend much money to send them the scanner for repair. They were even too cheap to furnish me with a schematic. A quality company supplies them with the literature when purchased new. Steer clear of a company who cannot stand behind what they peddle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work
This gets 2 stars just because the software seemed OK. My scanner didn't work and I had to return it. The scanner bar jammed up about 2 inches into the scan. Microtek's "support" site is TERRIBLE, it looks like they threw it together in a day of odds and ends, with no real thought to what people would need to know. Surely with as many bad reviews as this for all of their products, they'd have amassed quite a lot of FAQ's/troubleshooting tips, but if they have, they are keeping them to themselves. I had to return this on the same day I had to return a VCR that didn't work. Don't things work anymore? With this many products going wrong (if my experiences and all the dismal reviews of these products are any indication), wouldn't it make sense just to make a little effort to get it right before they sell these things?

2-0 out of 5 stars I know why it's so cheap
It took me four days to finally get it up and running, when I first installed the scanner everything seemed to be workong fine. But as I soon learned, the ribbon wire connecting the scanner head had a kink in it which would jam the machine. after repeated calls to Microtek, I was informed that I would have to send it to the company for repairs at my own expense. Customer service stinks. with the help of a screwdriver and some masking tape, (to hold the wire in it's correct position), I was able to get this thing working right. As for scanning film negatives with the optional adapter, save you money, it does a losey job. The software imaging software included disabled all of my pre-installed editing software and reset itself as the default viewer. If I'd known of the trouble that I would have with this product I'd have never bought it. This is the first and last time I will ever buy a Microtek product, customer service is a joke and non-existant. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good basic projector for the budget conscience
Generally I am very happy with the Microtek projector. This is the second projector my company has purchased this year. The first was much more expensive than this one but they seem to have the same technical specifications. The Microtek is a little bigger, about the size of a thick laptop, but it isn't heavy at all. The only feature I wish the Microtek had is a laser pointer on the remote. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scanner works well
The Microtek 3700 works fine and has some nice extras. Scan speed for a color image at medium resolution was about 90 secs. That's pretty typical these days. Scan speed for 300 dpi B&W Line art (i.e. text for OCR) was a VERY fast 30 secs. TWAIN software has many nice features and a few rough spots. Somehow I entered some bogus combination of preferences (line art & descreen?) that caused an error like "User has hit cancel button to abort scanning"! When I blanked out the settings and started over all was well. My scanner also came with a slide/film illuminator so I can scan them as well. This worked okay, but the color wasn't quite right. It certainly worked better than my home-made attempts at scanning slides on my old scanner. I have not seen slide scanners at any where near this price range before. Image detail was good, but not as good as I've gotten using my 2 megapixel digicam to photograph slides on a light table. But if you don't have a good digital camera that can focus close, this is definitely the best alternative. Overall I'm pleased with this unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Microtek Support Update
I would like to add to my review above of this product after having a horrifying experience with Microtek support. My scanner lamp went bad a few months after I purchased the scanner. I returned the scanner to Microtek and they sent it back after about a week, "repaired". Turns out, they did not set the locking mechanism on the scanner and it came back with teeth missing on the gears that moved the scan assembly. They replaced that one with another broken one that would not detect via USB. They replaced that with a third one that worked, but did not include the light lid (even though they told me they were sending me a brand new scanner). Their support was difficult to deal with. I like the scanner and the software, but it loses two stars for their support being MISERABLE!

5-0 out of 5 stars I suggest you buy it.!!
The main thing I wanted to do with this scanner was to scan and then email my pictures to friends and family. This scanner is USB and under $... many stores!!! It's quiet and the picture quality is great for it. I have no complaints yet on it, works like a charm. Setup instructions and software were included so with most any USB you just plug and play!

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs
Microtek should be embarrassed to have ever brought such a poorly designed, poorly built scanner to the market. The bulb is unbelievably fragile and can only be replaced by Microtek, shipping prepaid, and they want nearly as much for the "free" replacement as the scanner cost. My experience matches others I know who bought this scanner: mean time between failures of the bulb is 30 days. Buy something decent, from a company other than Microtek.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this!
I bought this scanner about a year ago and have been using with the family IMAC. The scans come out poorly. The software that came with the scanner conflicts with my zip drive. It is so "unfriendly" that no one in the family uses it.

Save your money, buy a rock for a paperweight and treat yourself to dinner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars decent
Overall a decent scanner. You'll have to do adjustments to your scans with any scanner. The transparency adapter is pretty good, too. I've had some problems scanning negatives. You have to check with microtek to see where it is available. There were some problems installing the scanner with XP, but i got it to work. They might have even of improved the drivers since then.

2-0 out of 5 stars Crooked!
My scans come out crooked. If I align it at the top the whole thing has to be rotated. If I align it with a side, then it's off center. This is very frustrating and I will return it. The scans came out decent but very dark. I had to lighten them tremendously. ... Read more
