Amazon.com Review

The Microtek ImageDeck is both a scanner and a stand-alone scanningappliance, meaning that you can use it completely independently of a computer.Setup involves simply plugging in the AC power cord. The control panel isrelatively self-explanatory, and a simple reading of the accompanying owner'smanual introduces you to the ImageDeck's major functions. Additional programsare provided which are easily installed on a computer and are useful for a rangeof post-scanning operations, from text editing of OCR scans to imageenhancement.

The ImageDeck can be attached directly to a computer or to aprinter, but scans well on its own too, saving the scanned files to either Zipdisks or 3.5-inch disks. We preferred the former for obvious reasons of storagecapacity; however, the smaller disk can be useful for smaller-size scans. Sincethere's no way to see the image prior to the scanning, there is no previewinginvolved. Rather, you simply choose between two preset sizes (the larger ofwhich encompasses the entire scanning surface), or the auto feature. This latteroption automatically detects the edges of any item placed on the surface (aprocess which takes slightly longer than a nonauto scan). Since there is no wayto view remaining disk space, warning indicators on the LED display panel alertyou when a disk is write-protected, full, or unformatted.

Connecting a printerto the ImageDeck allows it to function as a copier. There are obviouslimitations with this configuration, most notably an inability to inspect, preview, or correct a scanned image unless you connect to a PC. Furthermore, eachscan is numerically labeled--starting with either "img01.pcx" or "img01.jpg,"and continuing up to 99 before reverting back to 01. There's no way to furtheridentify or rename files on disks in the ImageDeck, although it's easy to do soon a connected PC. --David Greenberger

Pros:

  • Can be operated with or without a computer
  • Adapter available for automatic sheet feeder
Cons:
  • Preview requires a computer or printer
  • Unit-controlled numeric file naming
  • File-name editing requires a PC

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Scanner for shear easy of use
In about 10 minutes after getting the scanner out of the box I was working on images I scanned. The panel only has 9 buttons and a very easy display to understand.

The only small draw back I found was that the scan area was not clearly marked for where you put diffrent size paper. I have had it for about a year and I never have to worry about moving it or re-configuring it for my new computer.

This product is just plain simple quality. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for home users who don't require too much graphic clarity, the ScanMaker 3630's very low price makes it a noteworthy choice among value scanners. It offers 42-bit color depth, a 600 x 1,200 maximum resolution, a one-year warranty, and a software bundle that includes Textbridge Pro and MGI PhotoSuite III SE.

Higher-end users should note that you can't actually get 42-bit color with the included software; you'll need Photoshop or another comparable program for that. Tech support after 90 days on the one-year warranty may cost more than you'd expect to pay. And even the most basic features (such as a power light and one-button operation) are distinctly lacking.

However, as one of the least expensive scanners on the market, the 3630 is suited for simple, nongraphic-intensive tasks. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Update to my review
This is a great scanner. Unfortunately my computer crashed over the summer and I was upable to find the installation disk. When I called the company to see about getting another disk, they suggested that I buy the Microtek 3740 instead. They were absolutely no help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I originally bought this because I had gotten a new computer and my old scanner wouldn't work with the new operating system. It turns out that I should have bought this scanner first. It was about half the price and worked 1000 times better. The scanner program that is comes with is very easy to use and the set-up and installation for the scanner uses pictures and words to show you step by step what to do. This is a great scanner and I'm so glad that I bought it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PC World Review corporate Best Buy August 2002
Microtek's ScanMaker 6700 debuted splashily on our ...-color ScanMaker 5700, a longtime small-office chart mainstay. In addition to its higher 48-bit color depth and 2400-dpi optical resolution, the 6700 boasts the same sizzling performance, FireWire and USB 1.1 connections, and strong image quality as its older sibling.

For our performance tests, we used the 6700's FireWire interface and the add-in card and cable that come with the scanner. In terms of overall performance, the 6700 was slightly better than the Epson Perfection 2450, another 2400-dpi scanner we tested using FireWire. While the Epson ran faster on low-resolution scans (such as a 300-dpi black-and-white document), the Microtek was twice as fast on our 1200-dpi color photo. The 6700 also ranked highest overall in our August 2002 roundup for image quality. For example, in our print test of a 4-by-5-inch color photo scanned at 100 dpi and 24-bit color depth, it earned the top score thanks to the best combination of sharpness, brightness, and color reproduction (in skin tones as well as other shades).

The 6700 is designed for shared use over a local area network, and comes with LAN-specific software (Microtek LAN Wizard) that enables image sharing, job status reporting, and sending messages to other users on the network. In addition, like the 5700, the 6700 can scan transparencies as large as 5 by 7 inches with its built-in adapter.

WHAT'S NOT: The 6700 lacks an 8.5-by-14-inch glass and doesn't come with an automatic document feeder, so (as with other scanners that have letter-size scanning beds) you'll need to get an automatic document feeder to scan legal-size documents. You can buy a 50-page ADF from Microtek ... After the first year, live technical support is on a pay-per-call basis. The 6700 doesn't support the newer, faster USB 2.0 interface; Microtek says it is working on new models that do use USB 2.0.

WHAT ELSE: Like the 5700, the 6700 has a lid that includes a built-in lightbox for previewing slides and small pieces of film--a feature that no other scanner manufacturer offers. The 6700 sports five quick-start buttons for scanning, copying, e-mail, OCR, and scanning to the Web; the last transfers your scanned images to the IMira.com photo-sharing Web site.

The 6700 comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements for image editing, Ulead Photo Explorer 6 for image management, ABBYY FineReader Sprint 4 for optical character recognition, and Trellix Web 2.5 for Web page design. Microtek's efficient scanning driver (ScanWizard 5) provides separate modes for beginners and advanced users; the included step-by-step tutorial makes learning how to batch-scan multiple images and perform other image-editing tasks quick and easy. You can easily scan and save 48-bit color images (if you want to store as much raw color information as possible in your original scans), just by using the scanner driver. In fact, it's the only driver we've looked at recently that makes saving 48-bit color this simple. Also, you can save scanned documents in Adobe's Portable Document Format, which many businesses prefer for posting documents online.

UPSHOT: The Microtek ScanMaker 6700 is an attractively priced scanner for offices--networked and otherwise--that need fast, high-quality scans from photos, film, and paper documents.

Microtek ScanMaker 6700

1-0 out of 5 stars Crappy Support
I ordered the Scan Maker with high hopes due to the outstanding ratings that I reviewed on many sites. I am not a techie, and was impressed by those reviews. However, once I received the scanner and called for help in setting it up, my hopes declined dramatically. You have 3 options for support. 90 days free basic support, $15 per incident for "advanced troubleshooting", and email support. There is also what is called "General Consulting" support @ $30 per call up to 30 minutes, and $1 per minute after that.

None of the calls are to 800 numbers.

The support you get is non-existent. The operators ask what is the problem, then they immediately send you a pre-written email. Which in my case, wasn't what I needed. After calling again (at my cost during the 90 days free help) I got another person who sent me a different email. That did help, but it didn't answer all my questions.

The Auto Document Feeder is weird. The primary "part" needed to guide the paper and cover the glass during the auto-feed is a little plastic piece that is not easy to put in place.

Don't even get me started on the manual and what it says about how the feeder is supposed to work.

Maybe you need to be a techie to operate the user-friendly, easy to operate scanner.

Needless to say, I'll be trying HP next.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Customer support and scanner quality
Impossible is the word to describe trying to get in touch with Microtek customer service. Not only is the product extremely unreliable, but customer service and technical support would rather you not call them if you have problems. I have owned two Microtek scanners, both products not supported by the manufacturer ... Read more

This is not the absolute best projector you can buy, it's a bit on the heavy side and bulky compared to the newest projectors on the market. 5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Scanner Budget Price
I'm been shooting film for quite some time and decided to give digital a try. I consider myself to be a professional and wanted a professional scanner, but not something that would put me out. Came with Silverfast which I have heard great things about and this software that lets you blow up a 35mm slide to near poster size without pixelation occuring. Scanner also comes with calibration software that allowed me to plug in my ICM profile into the software for the correct color on everything. Next step is to obtain a great printer. ... Read more

With a sleek, stylish design that will make your old monitor hang its putty-colored head in embarrassment, Microtek's flat panel monitor features 15 viewable inches and a tiny footprint and profile to eliminate desktop clutter. Value is the name of the game with the C586, combining crisp 1,024 x 768 XGA resolution and 0.297 mm dot pitch. The result is consistently sharp imaging for an accessible price.

Unlike many flat monitors that seem to lose their contrast if you view them from anywhere other than straight on, the C586 features a 30-degree up and a 5-degree down tilt capability, and can be viewed from 45 degrees to the side. And the screen's visibility holds up even in brightly lit office environments thanks to an antiglare surface coating.

The onscreen digital controls are relatively intuitive, featuring contrast/brightness, phase/clock, horizontal/vertical position, sharpness, color adjustments, multi-languages, OSD function, test mode, and memory recall. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great LCD panel for all. Stylish, slim, and easy to setup.
I am running two of these in a dual monitor setup at 1024X768 resolution on both. The colors are very vivid, sharp and bright as well. I bought a total of 8 of these LCD panels and have sold them all with the computers I custom build for people and have had nothing but impressive comments on them. I've compared this LCD to my brother's Viewsonic VG150 and it clearly comes out ahead (slimer, brighter, sharper, and very easy to setup). I guess the only downfault is that it only has a analog input. but from my experience with DVI and analog inputs is I would doubt you can tell the difference with your eyes which one is plugged in. I hope this helps. [....] But anyhow, great panel. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I purchased this scanner just over a year ago. It is alot slower than the last scanner I had....which lasted quite awhile, and the ScanMaker 4600 is already broke after only 1 1/2 year of use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
The scanner is real good and fast and has good quality. The digital camera is nothing special and for me is a pain because there are no instructions, just a slip of paper. It has internal memory so you cant use a card. However overall I would give this 4 out of 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mac Owners Be Careful!
Why would anyone sell a scanner that is MacIntosh compatible in a package with a digital camera Macs cannot use? That is what happened to me! This Mikrotek camara is useless on my Mac G3 since it's for Windows only! I assumed since the Scanner was Mac compatible then the camera must be too! .... Also the camera is super small (about 4" by 3") and there isn't any guidelines with it or directions and specs. Just a tiny slip of paper with about two generic sentences on it telling you things that anyone with common sense already knows. It's made in China and consists of cheap plastic like those throw away cameras from you local drug store you use one time only. The cap for the lens cover falls off constantly and no way to fasten it back on. ....

5-0 out of 5 stars unbelievable
Plenty of software to utilize every corner of home or office scanning. Best scan quality I have seen. It pays to go with a company like Microtek, they focus on specific products and try to make the best. Sorry HP and Canon. Microtek has you beat. With the right printer and paper you can make photo quality prints. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dependable quality
The scanner itself has what I value most: dependability. I need something that works everyday as I have no down time in my digital photography and design business. I can't tell a customer to hold on while I'm trying to get a product in for service. Needless to say this has not broken down on me since. It has metal rails which is nice when everything else looks like they have gone entirely plastic. With that being said I like the fact that they give you an advanced menu bar, not treating you as if you are to incompetent to know what color curves and descreening are used for. For those of you who do not know what I am talking about don't worry, they have a simple version of the software that comes with the scanner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Scanner Budget Price
I'm been shooting film for quite some time and decided to give digital a try. I consider myself to be a professional and wanted a professional scanner, but not something that would put me out. After reading a bunch of reviews I came up with the 8700 Pro. I recommend B&H as they were excellent on helping and the scanner shipped pretty fast.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be afraid.. be very afraid.
The product is OK, but Microtek's support options are second to, well, everyone. You can call a toll number, listen to more options than you ever thought possible, and hold for at least twenty minutes, or you can browse their shockingly inadequate website. I'm not sure that it isn't more prudent to go with a different brand that has more comprehensive support options, especially if you are a new or inexperienced user.

4-0 out of 5 stars An addendum to my previous review
I have to add this to my previous review, in all fairness to reviewing. I had to return my 8700 to Microtek. After a phone call to tech support, he determined that my unit may have had a hardware problem due to the inconsistent manner my scanner would or would not work. It would or would not scan the image-it might do a partial scan then black out the rest-or it might scan correctly-I just never knew what it would do.
When you would click the arrow in the toolbar to shut it down, it would not respond.
I did not get an owner's manual with my first scanner. So I sent it off; the replacement was a different story. It worked! It has not given me any "partial" scans; it has shut down properly everytime, and it had the owner's manual.
After e-mailing tech support to find out about the dynamic range, (indicates how a scanner might produce shadow detail) I found out it was a 3.2. This is not so great; I had noticed on more than a few slides that the shadow detail was lacking.
For me, this scanner prints better from negatives, as the film I use has very good latitude. 2400x1200 dpi optical for 35mm is okay but if you are serious about your work, wanting enlargements, your negatives or slides better be super sharp, with good contrast-otherwise I would look for a higher dpi output, or try a larger negative format.
To wrap this up, I wish this scanner had a better dpi output and a higher dynamic range-I would say the two most important characteristics, besides very sharp scans. Otherwise, the scanner is easy to use; the other features make it enjoyable to use. I would give it 3 stars, but the ability to print from larger negatives-4x5, 6x6-6x9 film negatives or unmounted slides, or 8x10 transparency holder w/glass hopefully will help out the quality of my enlargements-will have to wait and see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner; must work your way through the menus.
The scanning capabilities from this model are pretty good. It has negative holders for 120 film and 4x5 film, besides 35mm & 35mm transparency holder-not too shabby for the price. I wish the optical dpi were higher. It comes with a firewire card and cable (in addition to a USB cable) that installed easily in my computer(instructions are easy-remove panel from computer-ground yourself by touching the computer case or chassis to prevent static electricity). WinME automatically recognized it right away.

My only gripe is that for what this scanner costs, that it does not include a DETAILED user manual. Customer service is a long wait on the 1-800#. I gave up and worked out my questions myself-like how to get to the PRINT menu in Photoshop5LE. Also, the filters & tools in the Photoshop menu grey-out. What is going on here? It depends on if you use 16 bit or 8 bit color-the 16 bit mode grays out some of the menu choices-although you can adjust levels and curves in 16-bit mode, which is the best mode to do this in. (I was a newbie at Photoshop when I first wrote this; still learning about "layers").

I really questioned this purchase, and considered returning it but I will keep it, as I am a serious photographer and need the control for my printing. The slide and film holders for DIRECT scanning (no distortion from glass), 42bit color, legal size scanning, 2400x1200, dpi are very good attributes for this scanner.
The software includes Adobe Photoshop 5 LE-this takes some working with-use the help menus-they have answered more than a few of my questions, as there is not much help in the way of a manual for this very useful software. The additional software lets you create a web page, & share photos on the web.

I would give it 5 stars, but because of the not so high dpi-1200 max, and technical support is a toll number if you have to call customer service; (they are helpful). Image quality is nice; color is great, even Microtek's scan interface with imaging controls are very good.

You can get a nice 13" print on the long side from a 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 scanned in at 1200dpi, 1:1 magnification, resized at 300 resolution. You can get a 16.25" print at the lowest recommended printing resolution, 240. I printed Fuji Velvia slides in 120-this scanner was made for this film! As far as the 3.2 density rating is concerned, you can just about ignore that with this film, and of course you can work with levels and curves for more shadow detail from color negative films. I do not use 4x5 film, but I believe this scanner would produce excellent scans for large format users needing 16x20 (or larger) prints.
(This is an updated review, that includes comments about medium format capabilities.) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Time
I read a good review of this scanner on a different website and decided to purchase it based on that review and the price. The moment I unpacked the scanner I noticed it had lint/dust UNDER the scanner glass which will show up when you scan your photos.. I e-mailed the maker of the scanner and they never e-mailed me back. Today I turned on the scanner and tried to scan a photo and it started to make a really awful noise and I could not close the program that is used with the scanner. The photo I tried to scan was a bunch of black and gray lines. Considering that the maker of the scanner wouldn't respond to my question about the lint under the glass and that I have had the scanner under 30 days and it has already "died" and now I have to return it I would recommend you look elsewhere for a scanner. ...
