5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant LCD
Pros: Very cute and unique looking, takes up almost zero space on my desk. Light weight enough where I can easily move it around. Actual display picture looks good. Easy setup, just plug it in and turn on your computer, no CD required.

Cons: LCDs are still pricier than the traditional monitors but IMO so very worth it ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner for the money
I'm going to have to disagree with the last review that states that he was not happy with the film quality. (...). As someone in the industry he should that only a dedicated slide scanner will provide professional level results.

I use the scanner to scan old 35mm slides that my father had taken and it works great. Color negatives are not properly suited for this scanner but my slides come out good enough to email to family and to print out.

The scanner is also USB 2.0 which I find great. When you do want to do a high resolution scan the high speed USB really comes in handy compared to the older USB. Overall the scanner is great for the money. Sure, I'd like to see it produce spectacular color negatives but you can't get a miracle product (...)

4-0 out of 5 stars decent for money
I started with a visioneer scanner... it was very fast, but had poor image quality and couldn't handle my 120 film. I took it back and got the 5900. The driver came up as untested in Vindows XP but I installed anyway. True as stated elsewhere, microtek's OCR would not install but it comes with ABBYY which installed fine.
Compared to the Visioneer, this thing is super slow but the image quality is MUCH better. A 600 dpi scan from the Microtek compares to a >1200dpi from the visioneer.
The scans from my 120 film negs are outstanding even only at 600dpi.
My only complaint with it is (at least on USB 1) scans are very very slow (my 6x4.5cm negative @ 600dpi took almost 20 minutes!)

All in all, even with the slow speed, I am very happy with the quality of the scans.

-UPDATE- I downloaded the latest driver from microtek's website. it fixed all of the issues I was having with this scanner. After turning off the instant preview, I have not had a single problem with this scanner and would definitly recommend it. Only issue for others might be a 15 meg download on a modem

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner, but poor software !
I am a computer Technician and it took me a full day sorting out the errors that kept the software from working, I had to get into the registry and clean out All references to the software, and after many tries, finally got the software loaded in Safe mode, and finally working. The scanner works great, better than I really expected, so far. Does great for my slides and negatives. Quite surprised at the quality afetr working on them in my Digital Image Pro 9 Photo software. I did not load any other software sent with scanner only the ScanWizard 5.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those on a budget.
I bought this scanner used from a closeout warehouse distributer for just a few dollars. For what I paid, it gives excellent results. Optical Character recognition works flawlessly, the max resolution (2400dpi) is so high, I haven't even come close to using it yet (honestly, what can you do with an 50MB JPEG?), and the built in film/negative/slide adapter is helpful. However, I would not recommend this scanner to a serious (or even serious amatuer) photographer. Normal scanning requires quite a bit of play to get good color results, and I'm finding it's better to make a semi-flawed scan at high resolution and fix it in Photoshop, than to manipulate the settings on the scanner. The biggest disappointment (like some other reviewers have said) is the negative scanning. While it works, I can't seem to get either tones or colors right--scans appear washed out and "soft" no matter what the settings. However, this is a nice function to play with and the results can again be improved with PS. Other complaints are noisy operation (I use Epson scanners at my school's lab that are whisper silent compared to the Microtek) and the bundled Scanwizard software, which is clunky and quite slow. While it hasn't crashed my OS yet, it definitely hesitates for a few seconds after nearly every operation.

Overall, a great scanner for photos, text, and everyday use, especially if you can get one at a decent price. If you want part of a digital darkroom, go with Canon, Epson, or HP. I would even recommend buying an older version from one of these manufacturers with a lower max resolution (say 1200 dpi) as the only time I can imagine using 2400 is to make wall-size blow-ups from a 4x6 photo.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYERS BEWARE!!!!
Buyers Beware.. I have and have had many scanners from Epson, Microtek,Cannon,HP,Ricoh, a few others. Scanner Stopped working after 3 months, conflicted with Windows XP, and had poor scan results-colour was very poor. Microtek warranty is costly to the consumer-require's phone calls for RMA, and the hefty cost of return postage-on something that should still be working.. I purchased the Epson 2400- to replace this scanner and it out-performs Microtek 100%. Probably why you see more Epson scanners in retail stores than Microtek. BEST BET TO BUY ANOTHER BRAND ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for prints; poor for film
If you want a scanner that will allow you to accurately reproduce color photographs and maybe crop a particular section of a print and maintain an acceptable resolution for printing, then this is a good bet. But don't expect to use it to EVER scan a slide or negative that will be worth printing.

If you scan at a resolution worthy of printing a negative, the scanner will leave large streaks throughout the image. And the color will be hit and miss, and even Adobe Photoshop will have trouble correcting the mess this scanner creates. And this is even after using the calibration tool for the LightLid 35 (an included accessory.

Some scans of 35mm film were acceptable for screen display, but nothing else. (To Microtek's credit, they explain that the LightLid is really only meant for the purposes of video display. But this information is NOT included in the product information available to consumers before the purchase. It's also not mentioned in many Web-site reviews.)

Another word of advice to potential consumers. This unit uses a deceptive labeling on resolution. The important number to remember here, of course, is that it's a 2400 by 4800 resolution scanner. Microtek, for some reason, decided to put that larger number first in its product packaging, likely thinking it could fool consumers who buy a product based on nothing more than the "higher number." How disappointed they'll be, I suspect, when they make scans at 4800 and discover fuzzy images.

My advice: If you want a solid performer for doing nothing but scanning in prints, then this will do the job. If you want more accuracy in scanning negatives and film strips, don't waste your time with the included toy. Buy a dedicated film scanner or a brand, even one from Microtek, that has a built-in film scanner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me!
I've been using the ScanMaker 4900 for half a year on a 400 mHz Pentium II running XP. The scanner has more than lived up to expectations. The hardware seems well engineered, and the software is powerful. Low resolution scans are satisfyingly quick. At the other extreme, you can have as much color depth and pixel density you could ever hope with scan times appropriate to the accomplishment. (One operation that does really seem to slow things down is descreening.) It is unrealistic to expect an inexpensive scanner to accomplish perfect color fidelity, but our scans have done a good job of matching the originals. We haven't tried 35mm slides, partly because of the inconvenience of setting up the attachment, and partly because getting a good transparency scan from an inexpensive flatbed seems like such a reach.

The "standard" interface is appropriately simple, and the "advanced" one powerful. That power comes with a price, though, for figuring out the software logic requires an amount of effort only justified in a production setting. Microtek apparently doesn't believe in power switches, but does provide a power-saving mode that turns off the lamp after a designated time. Since we switch users a lot and often boot up only to check email, the scanner lamp is left on more often than not. The scanning software does not communicate directly with the programming of the push buttons, an inconvience shared with many other scanner brands. The result for us is that we ignore the buttons.

Judging from other reviews, quality control and user support are an issue with Microtek. We got a good one and would buy again.

1-0 out of 5 stars piece of junk!
I purchased this scanner 16 months ago. I thought I would use it to scan in pictures of my son and print out Christmas cards, etc. Since I don't have as much free time as I would like I probably used it 3 times to scan in photos and 2 times to scan in documents that I needed a second copy of. I recently tried to scan in a family picture for a friend at work and the photo had horizontal lines all over the left side of the picture. I went to microtek support online and tried the two procedures they suggested in their FAQ's. When that did not work I emailed them with my problem. After 3 days I received their response. I seems that after spending $120.00 on a scanner and using it 6 times that my scanner has to be repaired. Their repair facilities are located in Southern California or Canada (since I am in Michigan that does me alot of good). Oh, and since I am beyond the 1 year warranty period I will be charged $80.00 per hour. What a joke! I would recommend never buying this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Product, No Service
This scanner works well for me. I'm using it to scan documents and images for web design and it does the job nicely. I haven't tried the slide attachment but since that's a freebie I couldn't complain if it didn't work well. Scanning photographs is simple and the resolution is plenty.

The buttons on the front are very nice for doing things like sending a document straight to your printer, or to an e-mail. There is even a button that you can configure to perform a certain task when pressed, like turn the lamp off. THE BAD NEWS: I must press this button every time I start up my computer, unless I unplug the scanner, because the software fails to turn off the lamp after so many minutes of idle time (like it is supposed to do). If I run the software, then it works. After 10 minutes or so the lamp shuts off.

I contacted Microtek and told them all about it (It's windows XP, blah blah blah) and they said they can't replicate the problem and have a nice day.

Probably won't buy another Microtek when this lamp burns out, which might not be too far away unfortunately. A nice scanner except for that, however.

I bought the Scanmaker 4800 in August from BestBuy. I used it a few times, maybe 10 or so and the scan was the problem is this:
The glass panel that you put the item to be scanned on has one end that has fallen down into the scanner thus makeing the scanner unable to move and function. I called microtek support and they said" turn it upside down and hit it untill the glass falls back in place". I did and it did fall back in place for about 30 minutes. I called them again, gave them my info includeing serial number at which point they said" we're sorry, but your scanner is out of warrenty". I said "what, I just bought this less than 4 months ago"? I was told that it does not matter that the warrenty started from when it was shipped to the reseller. I protested and asked to speak with a supervisor, i was connected to the voice mail of a David Lee.
As of this date I have left over 45 voice mails for him without a return call. I also have called the company over 200 times and I am unable to get this issue resolved.

So what have I learned?
1.Microtek makes and sells defective products.
2.Microtek Does NOT honor their warrenty at all.
3. Spend a little more and get a scanner with a real warrenty.

Good luck

4-0 out of 5 stars Big and Versatile for the Home and Office
It's big yea....but wow! It does it all and in legal size (14")too if needed! Below is the hype from apsom of it's capability and it worked great for me....The ONLY problem I had is it took up some counter space in the home office....but the unit definately paid for that space on the counter in no time through it's quality and versatility....

It is a 36-bit dual-media scanner that lets you scan photos and prints on its upper bed and film and transparencies in its transparency bay (lower bed).

It is also ready for all Windows or Macintosh operating systems you can get the software upgrades/drivers for all platforms at An Adaptec PCI SCSI card is included that works on Windows, as well as with the Apple G3/G4-series Macintosh.

the ScanMaker 4 features 600 x 1200 dpi optical resolution. It also incorporates a patented Microtek design called Emulsion Direct Imaging Technology, or E.D.I.T.. E.D.I.T. allows for scanning directly from the surface of the film without an interfering pane of glass that can distort and diffuse the original image. The result is richer, more accurate color and sharper, cleaner images loaded with detail.

The ideal solution for anyone responsible for putting together business presentations or scanning photos or film for brochures, reports or other projects destined for 4-color printing.

featuring a dynamic range of 3.4 and a color palette of 36-bit input and output, the ScanMaker 4 will scan anything from 35mm film, a photograph up o 14" in length, or a batch scan of several images at once -- even at different settings with different scanning filters applied quickly and efficiently.

Benefits you can expect....

High resolution: 600 x 1200 dpi optical resolution with interpolated resolution of 9600 x 9600 provide exceptional image quality and clarity.

Intelligent Scanner Controller Software: Microtek's ScanWizard magnifies the preview image in high resolution, and stores and saves gamma curve settings for future application.

Batch Scanning capability: ScanWizard allows batch scanning of many standard film formats or reflective originals, even at different modes and settings.

Works on PC or Mac. An Adaptec PCI SCSI card is included that works with Windows, as well as with the new Apple G3/G4-series Macintosh.

Includes an 8" x 10" Glass Template holder for scanning a variety of film formats.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good functionality - big and bulky are downfalls
I use the Microtek ScanMaker 4 in a professional setting as a web designer. The photos scan fairly fast so I have few complaints there. It has an optional tray that can be switched out for different mediums whether slideshow film, negatives, etc. Then, the flatbed on top is legal size, which is standard. I have mine plugged via scsi card and get decent speed.

My primary complaint of this scanner is primarily the size. It takes up a large portion of my work desk and its heavy in terms of scanners of similar quality. It stands about 6" high, about 13" wide and 21" deep (approximations).

If you can get past the size of the machine, it's not bad. This model is no longer in production so you'll likely get it used. It's a decent little machine but I reckon it is becoming obsolete now. ... Read more

Purchased this monitor 6 months ago. The monitor was packaged with good cushioning and a strong box - very important if you move alot and have your possessions shipped. The monitor itself presents a clear, bright display. My room over here is poorly lit due to a lack of windows. The display is easily read under these conditions; whether I'm typing a paragraph (such as this review) or watching a DVD movie with my computer. I will definitely purchase another monitor of this model when I have more $$$ so that I can run a dual display system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product for the office!
I'm going to echo everything that this other reviewer had to say when he wrote:

"You'll be shocked when you open the box with your new Microtek monitor - there's almost nothing in it. A manual, 2 cables and the display. The instructions for connecting are very brief and to the point. Follow them exactly. If you are using an old monitor, just disconnect the cables from the monitor and use them, rather than the new ones. Saves time. You should be delighted when you turn it on. There seems to be no problems out there waiting for you, at least I couldn't locate any thru the sales clerks. A fine product."

Doesn't get any easier to hook up and to install, great product! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner, PERIOD!
Most of the bad reviews I have read sound like software issues. If you can wait it out and get it to work out, you'll be very pleased with this scanner. The 4-up scanning saves time, the preview is fast, the one touch buttons are great, the quality is as good as scanners twice the price and the software is decent as well. Really, for the price, you know you can't beat it! I have had mine for a year now and love it. I am picky and demanding too. It has served me well through two versions of WIN98 and now with XP. I want the best for my money, and this is it!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a problem
I bought this scanner 6 months ago to replace a .. scanner that just wore out. After scanning one picture the computer lost the scanner. I would reinstall, scan one picture and lose it. The tech support was worthless they told me to unplug my other USB stuff, then they told me to reinstall the software, which was tough. No change. I bought a new computer with XP pre-loaded this machine cannot find the scanner. What a hunk of junk!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, sharp scanner
I have had this scanner for about a year now, and it has proven reliable and steadfast. The images produced were true to color, and the machine works very fast. The product could use a better manual, though. Still, I like the scanner very much because of its image quality, price, and versatility. Versatility here is related to its ability to scan multiple pictures at the same time. And for the price, which I believe is at least a couple of hundred bucks lower than other brands of the same scanning power and quality, I believe Microtek 5600 is hard to beat.

1-0 out of 5 stars Microtek ScanMaker 5600 Headache Maker
If you are looking for the headache, this scanner is a perfect source for it.
I got this scanner, and after it did work fine for three weeks, it is causing nothing but headache for me after that.
The scanner is locking up the computer after beginning of the scan most of the time. The troubleshooting manual recommends to uninstall and reinstall the software if that happens, but it does not help at all to fix the problem.
I am using a HP scanner for last three years with no problems whatsoever with my DELL computer, but I needed scanner with higher resolution to be able to scan the film negatives.
This scanner is certainly not the choice for that, or for anything else as a matter of fact.
The product support over the phone is a long distance call, not a toll free number, so you will spend few bucks waiting for their useless response. Look for more reliable brands, and stay away from Microtek, that's my recommendation.
Thank you Amazon for the opportunity to share my experience with this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Versatile
I just recently bought this scanner for scanning in old photo albums as well as old newspaper and magazine clippings. For the versatility and quality of this machine you are getting a bargain. the four-up scanning saves a lot of time. The Microtek will allow you to scan in a variety of different formats so you no longer need to convert tiffs to jpegs-you can just scan into jpegs or gifs or whatever you want. It is great because you are able to save each picture as its own file. It comes with a utility that allows you to do color balancing and tone changes before you scan. You can also use this scanner to copy straight to your printer as well as doing one touch text and email functions. Bottom line, a great scanner at a good price. ... Read more

The Microtek ScanMaker 3600 USB is a solid, easy-to-use flatbed scannerthat delivers high-quality results with very little setup and image tweaking. Assuch, it's perfect for a home or small office, or for a novice user. With itslightweight, trim design, it fits easily into a small workspace. Setup takesjust a few minutes, and the software, consisting of five applications, installseasily.

A quick reference guide outlines all of the basic functions of thescanner. More in-depth information is found in the driver software's onlinehelp. Besides the Microtek scanning program itself, the additional bundledsoftware takes care of tasks ranging from image enhancement and web preparation(PhotoDeluxe and Photo Impact) to file management (PageKeeper). The latterprogram is useful for organizing large sets of scanned documents, and lets youeasily add annotations to graphic files.

Novice users will want to start usingthe small range of preset image settings and move on to customization as theygain experience. To use the presets, you select the purpose for which you aremaking the scan, and each profile has its own default resolution setting. Usingthe presets, we found the results to be quite professional.

The scannersoftware lets you view the results on screen, set the print quality, create afax, or perform text recognition (OCR) scans. Text recognition uses the includedOmniPage OCR program to turn pages of text into editable text files.

Althoughthe default settings work well for most needs, more advanced users can also varythe scan quality itself. For example, a very dark original can be lightenedbefore, rather than after, scanning. --David Greenberger

2-0 out of 5 stars Guess what problem I had........Yep, Bulb burnout!!!
I basically bought the Microtek scanmaker 3600 b/c it was slim, looked good and was fairly inexpensive campared to others. I enjoyed it while it was scanning (of course I don't know a lot about computers, etc.) However, It only worked for just a few months before the bulb burnt out. Imagine that! I also got the red low glow (???). Like others, I found it hard to get to the on/off switch. And of course as said before, the only way to get it fixed was to mail the scanner back to them at my cost. Well forget that. I bought a new scanner and it definitely was not a Microtek. Microtek is not worth the time, trouble and added stress. Thanks for reading. ironjaw

2-0 out of 5 stars short bulb life
The scanner worked fine for the first month. Then I accidentally left the power on for a week, and the bulb burned out. Not completely, but the light is no longer bright white, but rather a dim neon red and all scans are so dim and noisy as to be unusable. I guess the bulb can't be replaced. What do you expect for [the price], I guess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disposable
I too purchased a 3600. It was inexpensive when I bought it so I should have known better... The inside of the lid is black. That translates into photo copies using a LOT of laser toner. Also, the power switch is a small toggle on the back. Turning it on and off is a hassle. Leaving it on will burn out the bulb in short order. (Which is exactley what happened with mine.)
Turns out the bulb is some sort of special Microtek only bulb. Even if you are a technician, you can't get the bulb. If the printer is out of warranty, getting the thing repaired will cost more than the original price. My suggestion?
Spend a little more on a different brand with a common bulb and buy the extended warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst scanner I've owned
This is the worst scanner. I constantly have problems with it reading documents and please, don't tell me it's my computer,it isn't. It's not too bad with photos but certainly not the quality you'd expect. The support, is there support? I've never had a response to any of my inquiries. All in all I would never purchase another one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scans stretched out, otherwise OK
I've used this scanner a lot and haven't had the bulb problems others have had. The scans are stretched, for instance, a circle scans as an oval. I looked everywhere on the Microtek site and the manual and the help and can't find the answer (if there is one.) Microtek's support site leaves a lot to be desired. It looks like some scanners you can calibrate, but I never figured how if at all to do it on this one. The software to work this scanner isn't the easiest to use, but it isn't bad. I never did figure out the text scanning - it ends up HUGE. The Photoimpact software CD that came with the scanner is really super, I use it for a lot of things. The scanner can scan on its side, which is useful, and 3-D images come out nice. Also it has an on/off switch. ... Read more
