5-0 out of 5 stars When a Large Bed is Necessary There is No Alternative
Microtek makes one of the only large format scanners on the market today, which concerned me as I don't like to see a monopoly as then product quality won't be job #1. I was surpised, albit pleasantly when I was received the scanner from CDW and how easy it was to use. It has SCSI, Firewire and USB connections on the back which make it easy to setup and install. Scanner quality is excellent as we scan dental xrays and then send them to insurance companies, who are always complaining about fuzziness of the scans. Needless to say we have had no difficulties with this Microtek and would probably buy another one in the future!

2-0 out of 5 stars Scanning lamp went out
I thought the scanner was great, but the lamp went out just after 1 year after I bought it. So now all my scans have a rainbow line from top to bottom. Microtek's extent of technical support is reinstall the drivers, if that doesn't work you have to return it so we can repair it, because there are no authorized repair people out there, but us. They will not sell me the lamp, because they need to repair it themselves (they want the labor dollars). So, after I paid $1,400 for this thing a year ago I am going to have to pay another $200-300 for repair and shipping both ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the scanner and an extra star for Amazon.com!
I have waited four years to buy a large bed scanner. I will never understand why the slight difference in scanner bed size increases the cost so greatly, (an 11 X 14 scanner is as little as $...) but that's the market as it stands. As an artist, I needed a scanner that would capture my work in one scan.

The Microtek scanner came practially ready to go right out of the box and installed into Windows XP effortlessly. It even came with a firewire card to install into the computer in the event the buyer didn't already have one. Very considerate! All necessary cables, both a Firewire OR a USB will operate it, and all the software was there and ready to go. Plugged in, it woke right up and scanned perfectly on it's first time out, as easy as downloading pics from my digital camera. No problems!

Amazon.com not only had the best price after a year of looking around, but offered free shipping and still got it to me the next day. If I had to spend this much on the scanner I at least got great service and treated well by the seller, as well as a quality product. OUTSTANDING!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a very good scanner
We are a small publisher who scans large print publications for professional use. We ordered the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL without the optional slide-scanning attachment, since we never scan slides. (The Amazon listings are not very clear on this point, but the more expensive version of this scanner has the slide attachment.) We ordered the scanner on a Saturday and it arrived on Tuesday. It was probably drop shipped from the manufacturer, who is in the same state as us, but that's still pretty efficient. The scanner is faster than our large-format Agfa Duoscan (which we bought for $5,000 six years ago and which is now broken). The Microtek bed is several inches larger than the Agfa's.

The only think I don't like about the Microtek is, the lid will fold up on a hinge but only at right angles. This bunches up really large publications that need to slop over the edge of the scanner bed at that end. The lid of the old Agfa lifted off completely, and I liked that significantly more.

But other than that, the Microtek is a great scanner at a reasonable price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Product!
I've been waiting for this scanner for months and months but it has been worth the wait. I had it on pre-order and have finally got the opportunity to get it. I was eyeing the Microtek 6800 for quite some time but decided to hold out for a legal sized scanner that also had positive and negative capabilities. I was also impressed with the price point of $599 MSRP. I was expecting it to push $799 or more based on the speculated features but was pleasantly surprised when the vendor told me.

With that being said I received the scanner yesterday and immediately torn into it. I am impressed with the physical construction of the unit. The scanner has metal railings inside and is quite solid. Nothing appears cheap or thrown together and I appreciate knowing that its not just plastic that was formed together last week. The scanner is both firewire and USB 2.0 so I chose to hook it up via firewire as most of my USB ports were tied up with PDA, Printer, Mouse/Keyboard, Smart Card Reader, etc. Installed the ScanWizard Pro software, restarted the computer and turned on the scanner. Windows XP picked it up and I was able to do a Scanner Test to verify it was working within a few seconds.

Once the scanner was up and running I launched Photoshop CS and then ScanWizard Pro through the File menu. Once it was up I imported my ICM profiles for my monitor and printer. This allows for accurate color reproduction but is not necessary depending on what you are doing with the output. I was very impressed with the time it takes to actually scan. About 10 seconds or less for a preview.

As for the actual scans I was pleasantly surprised. I have a dedicated slide scanner but it doesn't do large format items. I bought a piece of anti-newton ring glass and used it to flatten my items between the 8x10 glass plate that is included. This insures that the image is completely flat while maintaining the benefits of the i900's glassless positive and negative scanning. Scanning at a modest 1200 PPI I was surprised at the quality that I got. Reflective scans of course came out even better. I for one am very impressed with the optics of this unit.

As for the main feature, Digital ICE I can honestly say that this too is superb. I've read online how Digital ICE used to take almost half an hour to accomplish, this scanner does it in roughly a fourth of that time. The images that Microtek has online appear close to what I am getting with the i900. It saves me a considerable amount of time inside Photoshop and on the three photos I've tried they required little to no cleanup work beyond Digital ICE.

All in all I'm very pleased with my purchase. This will compliment my Artixscan 4000 quite nicely. I couldn't have asked for more and it delivers on everything it promises! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Scanner at Decent Price
I have been a Microtek fan for quite a few years, having started out with a Scanmaker III, then a Scanmaker 5, and finally progressing to the 1800f. The 1800f has firewire and USB connections, which makes switching between my PC and Mac effortless. Much easier to use then the old SCSI scanners I had and much improved optics. I was pondering getting a slide scanner but this one works great for archiving the thousands of slides that I have from my photography days. It has a slide holder so that you can have it scan quite a few slides at the same time, thus a nice time saving feature like my Scanmaker 5. The difference is this one has much crisper images and is light years ahead in speed. Overall I am very impressed with the scanner and its abilities. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad ADF
I purchased this scanner to scan documents into PDFs. I rarely scan high resolution color photos so I can't comment on how well it does with those. With black and white documents at 300dpi, the scanner is fast and the images are sharp. The automatic document feeder is quiet and fast too. However it left 3 slight creases on the top half of each and every sheet of paper I fed through it. The creases are located in a 1.5" wide area at the center of the top edge of each sheet. I looked for burrs along the paper path, or any other obvious defect, but everything looked fine. The only thing I noticed was that Microtek used two separate paper rollers instead of one long roller. This 1.5" wide area exactly corresponded to the gap between the two rollers. Since I don't want my original documents damaged, I sent this scanner back.

1-0 out of 5 stars First scanner was DOA, replacement arrived DOA as well
I ordered the first 5950 scanner from Page Computers. It arrived in two days. I couldn't get it to work after several hours of trying and working with the software setup. Called Tech Support at Microtek & they said the glass was warped on the scan bed & to send it back to retailer. I had to pay for return shipping & requested a replacement scanner. Took one month to process the return & get me a replacement scanner. Replacement scanner had the same problem. Now I'm having to return the replacement as well and pay for more shipping. Sent letter and email to Microtek asking for help and didn't receive any reply.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trouble from the get go
Very excited about a higher resolution scanner with a document feeder at a fair price. Excellent packing so no shipping damage. But it would not scan beyond the first 1-2 inches on its first and subsequent tries. Discovered their tech service e-mail addresses do not work and no info in the tech help section of their web-site. Sending it back without being able to comment on whether it was anything other than a waste of 3 hours.

1-0 out of 5 stars Microtek tech support - what a joke
Received the scanner and set it up per their instructions. Scanner was recognized by my PC but would only scan the top 1-2" of the page. I made sure the scanner's scanning mechanism was unlocked and then looked for the tech support information.

The tech support note say "Do not return this item to the store" and to call Microtek's tech support at the following telephone number (not a toll-free call). I followed the instructions and waited 25 minutes on hold. Finally got a person on the phone who listened to the problem with the scanner and told me it is broken (no kidding!). He then told me to return it to where I bought it since it was just out of the box. I told him the card with the scanner said just the opposite. No reply.

Microtek fails at tech support with a toll call and then they don't send a replacement, they tell me to return it to Amazon. It is going back to Amazon for a refund. I won't spend a penny on another Microtek product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Scanner
I needed to scan in reports sent to me from outside customers and this fit the bill. I've never had an out of memory error and the motor is running fine after several thousands feeds over the last few weeks. I consider this one of the better products I've purchased in the last few years. ... Read more

I found out that nothing short of a drum scanner is going to come close to the optics in this scanner. I feel like it is the Mercedes of scanners, with features like anti-vibration and other features that you don't really know exactly when they do but know that they are contributing to the operation of the scanner. Since we have received the scanner we have been very pleased. I called up technical support to get the run down on how to operate the scanner and a very nice gentlemen walked me through the operation and use of the scanner. This is very important as customer service should be of critical importance, for when you buy a product you like to know that there is someone there for you if you do need help. Overall 10/10 as we speak. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice scans and options.... but...
It scans normal pictures beautifully and quicker than my old scanner. The buttons are convenient and easy to use, as is the included software. My only two gripes are that the scanner glass had a few white flecks on the INSIDE of the glass (and no way to clean them off), and the fact that images scanned with the film scanner look faded and overexposed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
It's incredibly slow (and NOT because it's scanning at a high resolution - it takes years just to get the software to launch in the first place), insanely loud, and doesn't produce great results. It was issued to me at work - if I'd bought it myself, I'd have returned it immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
Super good quality, easy to setup and great software included. Great for anything from OCR to copying your pictures at high resolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Awesome Product!
Picked up a Scanmaker 6000 from Best Buy over the weekend and was really suprised. I had never heard of Microtek before and was going to pick up a HP but the specs on this were incredible. 6400x3200 DPI resolution. Pretty easy to setup and install. Just install software reboot and plug in the scanner to one of the USB plugs. I couldn't figure out how to do the email so I called and they were able to give me some help with it which was nice. I'm pleased with my purchase. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Microtek ScanMaker V6UPL provides a legal-size scan bed (8.5 by 14inches) that produces crisp detail and brilliant color capability. This compactworkhorse weighs in at about 10 pounds, and it's sturdy, easy to use, andfeatures a clean one-button design. The ScanMaker offers 600 x 1,200 dpi, 36-bitcolor depth, a fast prescan, and a maximum interpolated resolution of 9,600 dpi.Bundled with a powerful software package, it's designed to meet both home and office needs.

Like most scanners, the V6UPL's software was easy to install. From the start ofsetup, we especially liked the zip-lock bags handily labeled either EPP or USB,and the separate installation and reference guides for both Windows and Mac.(You can connect via either a USB or SCSI port on PC or Macintosh.) We highlyrecommend following the enclosed and very logical reference guide for thefastest, most trouble-free installation. Our total installation time was about15 minutes.

Scan settings are managed by an intuitively designed software package thatallows you to adjust your scans for speed, output size, and color accuracy. Theresults of our scans were very good, with the exception of those created usingthe transparency adapter; its performance was inferior to adapters in acomparable category.

The software package includes Adobe Photoshop Deluxe and ScanWizard 5, a newversion of Microtek's award-winning scanner controller software, so you canreliably produce images from photos or enlarge them from postage-stamp size to full-page size without losing detail. The software's automatic color calibrationalso provides true-to-life color reproduction. And its simple andstraightforward approach to navigating through your scanning tasks makes editingand enhancing images elementary. OCR (optical character recognition) softwarefurther assists in reading scanned texts. You can also scan positive 35mm slidesusing the included slide adapter and then, with one mouse click, deliver youredited scanned image to e-mail or a printer. --David Greenberger

Pros:

  • Scans up to legal-size documents
  • Includes slide adapter
  • Good, crisp, quality color scanning
Cons:
  • Large footprint
  • Few printed reference materials
  • Transparency adapter delivered inferior results

4-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner for the price
The Microtek Scanmaker V6upl is a good scanner at a decent price. It scans photos with good color and detail. The PhotoImact software (included) is excellent software for making adjustments to the photos. Forget the Adoble Photo Deluxe 2 (also included). OCR is above average using Textbridge 9, but not worth much (typical) using the included limited OCR software. The drawbacks are it takes up a lot of deskspace (but can can scan 8 1/2 x 14 documents), and the included transparency adapter gives very poor results on slides for which it is intended. Overall, a good scanner, well worth the current price, especially if you will scan some documents longer than 11 inches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Hewlett Packard 5300
Even though some people did not like this scanner, I compared it directly with The Hewlett Packard 5300. I scanned a photograph on each scanner. The scan on the Microtek was MUCH sharper! Plus, the V6 UPL will scan legal size documents as well as 4 full size photos. This feature does come in handy from time to time. This is a reliable scanner that produces sharp results. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is alittle noisy during the scanning process. It makes a "scraping" noise that bothered me at first because it sounded like the scan was causing friction. But, once you get used to this scraping sound, the results are quite good. Plus, the price is very reasonable. I recommend this scanner very highly. I have had mine for over 6 month now with no problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars NO SUPPORT FOR WIN XP PRO
I've recently upgrated from ME to XP Prp and found that this scanner is not working (not recognized) under Windows XP. Microtek doesn't seem to have specific drivers fron WIN XP, only for WIN 2000, 98, and 95. Although I did purchase this scanner about 2 years ago, I never had problems with it under Win ME.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
I purchased 3 of these scanners because it received such a great review. I can only describe the product as junk. To attempt to use it I had to "rig" the scanner by disconnecting and connecting it before using it and sometimes during use because it would freeze. Also the sound card had to be removed from the computer.
Assistance from Microtek was of no use and they themselves did not know how to deal with the problems.
If the scanner could actually work without all the hitches then the quality of scanning and the various programs that it came with would be of great use. I only know this as a result of using another scanner with the software that the Microtek came with.
The 3 Microtek scanners are now serving as very expensive paperweights after 3 months of trying everything short of magic to get them to work on various computers in the office.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of my Worst Experiences
I purchased the scanner new. After installation I could make 2 scans and then the scanner (or software) would lock up and my coputer could not find it. I sent emails to tech support and followed all their instructions and the result was always the same. They then sent an email saying to call tech support. I called (a toll call, not an 800 #) and it took 10 min b4 someone answered and said I needed to be xferred to the advanced consulting group. After being xferred I was on hold for 1 hour b4 I gave up. The only thing worse than this scanner is their custtomer support. It seems to me that support of a new purchase should have 800 service. I wouldn't recommend another Microtek product to my worst enemy! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Scanmaker 5800
Really can't say much except that it would lock up my XP computer. Contacted Microtek by e-mail, got no response.
Returned it to Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy but Slow
Fine scanner...always liked the ScanWizard software Microtek provides. Easy to use. But it's slow. Over 30 seconds to scan one black and white page at 300dpi. And it has this droning sound that vibrates your nerves - you practically have to leave the room until the page is done. Not recommended and poor Microtek site for not providing performances specs on this scanner. But for $100, what did I expect?

5-0 out of 5 stars Buttons Buttons and More Buttons
I was looking for something easy and I mean EASY to use. I asked the local store guy and he suggested this. It has 7 buttons on it, so i just put down my picture and press the button and it appears on my desktop. So far I like what I have bought. I bought the extended warranty as well for $10 but looks pretty solid so far. It comes with this attachment thing to do 35mm slides but I haven't got into that so far. Packs a lot of punch for well under $100. It has the new USB but I'm not sure if I have that, ohh well something to look forward to when I do! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than many
I have had this product almost 2 months now, and I've never been happier with my purchase. The color and graphics jump out and are well defined with very little "fuzz" around the edges-IF you the native screen resolution. Trying to use a lower rez for larger icons, print, etc. does create some minor blurs and fuzz but if you have a slight vision impairment like mine (can't read small print-otherwise just fine), then the native rez will work. This new technology takes some getting used to but once your brain and eyes make the switch, you'll never go back to the old clunky (and very dependable) CRT-type monitor. Only 2 things kept me from rating this five stars: the built-in speakers are JUNK-don't even bother hooking them up; and the set-up menu reads like Egyptian hieroglyphics
-in other words, you just have to figure it out by trial and error, which is easier than reading the booklet. If you're looking for a 17 inch flat panel and you have a limited budget, then this is one you should consider.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for vision-impaired people like me!!!
I just got a great deal on this at a local office supply store. "Twas the day before Christmas(2003), and they wanted to make a deal, so they gave me a hundred dollars off." The deal was just too good to pass up. I was concerned with the screen resolution-the higher the res, the smaller the icons and everything else on the screen. We all know how difficult is to see on a computer screen anyway. HELP IS ON THE WAY!!! If you leave the screen at the "native"(factory set) res- 1024 X 768 - AND go to the display options panel and change the icon setting from "normal" to either "large" or "extra large" the vision problem - poof! - just disappears. The color, clarity, sharpness and definition of everything on the screen makes a flat panel the best gift you can give yourself- or someone else, if you have enough money. Since I've only had this item for a little over two hours, another review is sure to follow in about six months-or sooner if I have to deal with the tech support people.
Happy Holidays-see y'all in a few months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter Loves It!!!
If any of my fellow parents out there are sending their kids off to college as well then I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND a LCD monitor. My daughter's desk is about the size of 4 2x4s stacked together and a regular monitor would dwarf it!

As we were over at OfficeDepot getting some school supplies I just happened to go down the monitor isle and my daughter liked this design. I had never heard of Microtek but after 2 months of use right now it works perfectly she tells me. Almost have to have faith when they are so far away that the product will work. It came with a 3 year warranty which is a nice addition as that should almost get her through all of college!

Good size screen, good picture quality as well to boot! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

A great value, the Microtek SlimScan C6 is easy to use and comes with a large selection of software. Its relatively high resolution and multi-function capabilities make it a good choice for the home user.

Setting up the actual scanner was remarkably easy; figuring out how to use all the included software was a bit more difficult. The Microtek SlimScan C6 comes with a handy quick-start guide, but detailed documentation is only available in electronic form.

The Microtek SlimScan C6 comes with a great software installer that lets you load all the different software packages one after another. Once we had installed the software, photo scanning was simple--we pushed the single button on the scanner, and our computer automatically launched the scan program. Scanning and recognizing text was also easy; the optical character recognition (OCR) software was completely accurate for most documents we tried.

The Microtek SlimScan C6 also comes with a variety of image-editing and document-management software. Microtek's ScanWizard was particularly useful, since it let us enhance and edit images before we scanned them. It also has a great descreening feature that makes it possible to scan previously printed material without distorted Moire dot patterns.

In addition to performing well as a simple scanner--giving us relatively good picture quality and medium-to-high resolution (600 x 1200 dpi)--the Microtek SlimScan C6 also functions as a fax machine and can convert a color printer into a color copier. Its incredibly thin form makes it a good choice for those with limited desk space, although at 7.7 pounds it's still not quite a portable scanner.

  • Great selection of accompanying software
  • One-touch scanning button

  • Insufficient printed documentation

5-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead and get it already!
I comparison shopped in stores and on the net quite a bit, checking out several product reviews. Basically, I wanted to add aflatbed scanner to my setup (which includes an all in one printer with sheet feed scanner) to save photos and to scan from books, etc. that can't go through a sheetfeed. I didn't want to spend alot of money, I needed somthing small to fit in my computer cabinet, and I didn't want a slow piece of junk. I bought a Microtek SlimScan C6 (USB) via Amazon.com. I had no problems with installation and was using my scanner in about 20 minutes. Software includes Adobe and Photo Impact for editing photos and Photo Impact Album for keeping track of them. I have 18 years computer experience but don't work in the computer field. Enjoyed the Amazon experience (my first) too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quality Scanner, not so easy set-up
Installing the software is not necessarily easy. After going through installation, my Windows 98 machine locked up upon re-boot. If you e-mail or call Microtek support they will inform you how to get past this. Support is great, and product is excellent, once it's configured properly.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine product, by a fine company.
After being quite content with my now-outdated Microtek E3 SCSI scanner, I decided to go Microtek again with the new slimscan USB. Although I would say that scans are slower than the older SCSI model, the overall quality is much better, and the interface is improved. As mentioned in other reviews, the OCR provided with the package is somewhat weak, but functional. I would recommend purchasing OmniPage Pro by Caere for higher-quality OCR recognition, although this may run you around a hundred dollars, last time I checked. The model is quite thin, although I too have had troubles making the button in the front, which is supposed to launch applications in Windows, functional. All in all a solid purchase at a solid value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Quality Scanner
I format my HDD from time to time, but I never had any problem installing the scanner ...even using it. For the price, it is a bargain. Picture quality is good, and I even bought the the device on-line.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to Microtek standards
I bought this scanner because of its low profile and "scan" button, and because my Microtek E3 was a great product. Unfortunately, hookup was a problem. Microtek seems to have written their code to require the very latest USB drivers from Intel, so unless you find the right support note on the Microtek web site (and the link to Intel's page) you will be very frustrated hooking this USB device up to your system. Even after a four-hour installation process, I still cannot get the button on the front of the scanner to function properly. The ScanWizard TWAIN driver is excellent, but don't bother installing the rest of the software. The OCR package is particularly poor. The only redeeming thing about this product is its price and it's low profile ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars soft ware problems with XP
I bought the 6800 after using a lower grade Microtek scanner for 9 months. The old one kept locking up after doiong a scan directly to the printer. The 6800 did the same. I contacted Microtec and they walked me through a down load (via e-mail and a printout) from their site. Still had same problem after taking same steps 3 times and the fourth time I tried to reload the disk that came with the scanner. Still same problem. I again contacted Microtek. This time no responce. I retured the scanner to the store. However, if don't use the direct scan buttons, and go through the program steps, it does scan well. Tired to do a few slides, and only got a black square. People at store said maybe I had a bad light in the 35mm adapter. Anyway, for a new scanner that I paid $150.00 for, I guess I expected everything to work!

4-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good
I got the ScanMaker because I have lots of photos from my wedding to scan. I also have roughly 450 medium format negatives from my photographer. Scanning both has been a breeze. The scanner software can operate in advanced mode, which allows saving different areas of the scan as different images, but in one scanning pass. So for my negatives, I can scan 4 negatives into 4 separate images. Very nice.

Image resolution and color reproduction are top notch. Digital ICE is great for images and saves some post-scan touch-up time. It would be nice to have it for film, but I consider it to be a bonus even for photos.

My only complaint: The USB cable is way too short. The power cable is nice and long though. If this were fixed, it would get a 5.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Digital Retouching + Firewire USB 2.0 = Great Combo
After using ASF's software for a while I was very interested in this product. I saw that it only worked on reflective images, not slides and negatives which was disheartening at first but the actual product more than made up my initial percieved shortcomings. The scanner is very fast when you do not use the digital ice feature. When you do use it you need to give it some time to work its magic but it does work wonders. If you have old pictures that are torn up or scratched then this is what you need. It's suprising to see a product today that works as advertised. Edit: I should re-phrase that it does scan slides and negatives, just not with the digital ice function (restoring ability). I will keep everyone up to date with my progress with the 6800 but so far so good!!

Pros: USB 2.0 and Firewire connections for both my PC and Mac. Fast scanning when not using digital ice. Excellent photo reproduction capabilities!

Cons: No ice function for negatives ... Read more
