5-0 out of 5 stars Maxtor is the best by FAR...Indestructable
I have had this exact drive for about a year now. ZERO problems
I am always adding deleting reformating everything. I have totally beat on this drive more than any computer user. It is almost like i tried to destroy it any way i could but there really is not destroying this drive. When i first got it i even dropped it on a marble floor.(but i don't recommend this if you can help it) Didn't hurt it a bit. Maxtor is one company that has made a name for themselves by making dependable drives and they back it up with the product.

As a added bonus the installation instructions were simnple and easy to understand for a computer geek or novice. That is something that is very unusual for any computer product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overall, I am very pleased
I bought this hard drive from my friendly neighborhood CompUSA one year ago, when it was top of the line. I have to tell you, I am very happy with my purchase. To start, 60GB can accomidate almost anything for any user. Casual users will find the 60GB space storage helpful for their MP3s and other smaller applications. It will assure them that they won't have to upgrade for a long time. Power users, like your's truly, find the price to performance ratio on this 60GB hard drive quite astonishing. For the price, you will NOT find a more powerful and spaceous drive! I use my 60GB to hold all my games, backups, and my 12,000 MP3 collection. I have two other 100gb hard drives and one 200gb hard drive, all from maxtor, running with my 60gb. Just to make it short, I can assure you that I won't be in need of a new hard drive for a LONG TIME. This 60GB hard drive really does make the difference even for people like me.

Not only is it spaceous for just about anyone, but this thing is fast and efficient. Now, you may not suspect that a hard drive will really make much of a difference speed wise, but upgrading your RAM will usually not have much more of an effect than upgrading your hard drive if you choose wisely. This is an ATA drive, so that assures you extra speed. Running at 7200RPM, you know you are getting the almost-fastest out there. But I can tell you this: if you are upgrading from an SCSI hard drive, you are really going to appreciate this drive. It will give you quite a performance increase.

To conclude, this hard drive is spaceous, fast, will suite anyone's needs, all for a great price! It is a sinch to install as well! Go ahead and order this as soon as possible. You will not believe what difference you can make with a Maxtor hard drive!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Much Worth the Price
This item was as easy to install as any and worked flawlessly in my old junk HP PC. It was just as easy to move from my old PC to my new Dell state of the art PC and continues to work flawlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mail in rebates
I think these mail in rebates are the worst things in the world. Why would you buy from a manufacturer and then have to wait for a rebate. These rebates turn me off to the product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but need's some improvements
This drive is quite nice for file storage, with nice
performance, but could use few improvements. It lacks the On/Off
switch, the backup software is abit lousy, could be much better.
This software does not recognize any of my secondary partitions
other than fat32/ntfs which is a big problem for me since I
dual-boot with Linux. It has some issues with via usb chipsets
under linux that need to be hand-tweaked in order for this drive
to work under linux.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Quality Control
Do not buy this drive.
Our company bought about 12 of these, as an economical large-storage and backup solution. 3 have already failed within 2 months, and I am having to think up other backup solutions in anticipation of the next one. The failure mode is very similar to what some of the other reviews have said on this site and others (try PCWorld too) - the platter starts making some racket and the thing just quits. Maxtor is a reputable enough company to honor their warranties, but it's not worth the hassle and potential data loss.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seemed like a good drive until it stopped working
I was excited to have the extra capacity but frustrated at the lack of an on/off switch. I really think that is a problem they need to address.... The drive seemed to work fine for a few days, then made a series of loud grinding noises and died. I don't know for a fact but I suspect the lack of an on / off switch had a part in the ultimate failure of the drive. Also, it would have been helpful if the CD that came with it had some software to reformat or otherwise try to diagnose and repair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dead on arrival
Dead on arrival. There is no on/off switch. You connect/disconnect the power cord for on/off. Maybe I just got a bad unit. I opted for a refund so I can't tell you how a working one performs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This range of Maxtor Drive is of a VERY high quality
I and my brother have two sizes of drives in this range and they are high reccomendable. They are noticably quicker then our previous 5400rpm drives and are brilliant for real time video editing. We didn't need a SCSI disc to get rid of the processing done by the CPU when recording Real Time MPEG1. The extra processing is now done by the Hard Disc. The 2 Meg buffer is also impressive. You WILL notice windows load quicker and programs load faster. THe only draw back was to go the the Maxtor website and download a crack as on some machines the UDMA mode does not get invoked when you select it. You MUST do this as it speeds the drive up by about 40%. MAKE SURE in Device Manager you have that box checked. If it doesn't work get a small crack from their site. This does not detract however as this is the best drive I have seen for speed, performance and reliability (I have had it 8 months without a blip)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hard Drive Ever
I bought this drive to replace the one that came with my computer and it blows the old one away. It loads windows in half the time-literally-i timed it before and after. Its amazing! You won't really get 66MB's per second but it is very fast and very quiet. The computer now waits on me to give it a command instead of me waitng for it to execute one.Buy this drive for its massive storage capacity , high speed, fairly good value, long warrenty, and extreme ease of installation. You won't regret it, I guarantee you that. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
I ordered this drive 6 months ago. The drive I initially received, worked fine initially, but over a few months took longer and longer to warm up (up to 30 minutes), before the computer would recognize it. I returned it to the manufacturer. The second drive they sent me lasted for about 2 weeks, before my computer reported that it could not read from the drive at all, due to I/O errors. It seems that this drive is so unreliable, I need to keep a copy of all my files somewhere else, to be sure I don't lose anything when the drive fails.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs better support for OS-X
Does not operate well in OS-X. Drive is not accessable in OS-X unless Classic OS-9 is running on bootup. This means that you cannot run OS-X applications directly from the drive.

The transfer rate for this drive is extremely slow when uploading digital video files directly from the camera to the drive. The drive will lockup and you will need to reboot the system to unlock the drive if you cannot unlock it by powering the drive on and off.

Maxtor customer service is lacking, as well. There is no disclaimer on the box or any of their documentation on their website advising consumers about compatability problems with OS-X. They do not have any driver updates section for this drive on their website. I finally found the OS-X disclaimer after I downloaded the Software Installation file and decompressed it. This file should have been on the webpage as a notice.

Maxtor makes very good products, but they really stepped on it with this one. They need to do a better job with Mac products if they want to keep their share of this market, or just do us a favor and stop producing for the Mac and save us a lot of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product for use with an iMac
I have had nothing but good luck with this product since I bought it about 4 months ago. I use it for backing up my hard drive and extra video and picture storage. Easy to use and nice looking on the desktop. Highly recommend. I think I would spend the extra cash on the 80MB if I had it to do all over though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maxtor External Hard Drives
Since no one had mentioned their experience with Maxtor external drives on the PC, I thought I would add my two cents. I recently purchased the 40gb USB HD from them and it works great. Between my friends and I, we have all had nothing but instant plug and play success in Windows 98, ME, and 2000 -- which I must say is rare for PC products. They don't even include driver disks; you don't need them!

I don't see why the FireWire option would be much different, assuming you have the correct ports. It's an excellent buy for so much storage space. If you don't plan on swapping much data and use it more for backups or ghosting as I do, it puts any other medium (Zip, Jaz, CD-R, Tape) to shame.

Lastly, I would definitely recommend Maxtor products over Buslink, who also makes external HDs. I bought Buslink's silver portable CD-RW drive and still haven't been able to get it to work in Windows 2000 (which claimed compatibility on the box), and I have given up on their customer service after months of being no help whatsoever.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't risk your data on this drive
The first one of these I bought wouldn't stay alive for more than a couple of minutes between power-ups. Maxtor kept telling me it was an incompatibility with my computer and wouldn't repair it even though I had tried a different firewire card and computer. I returned the drive for another one. The next one worked more reliably until recently and now it acts like the first one I bought. Maxtor won't admit this drive has flaws! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!- but there's a catch
Transfer a LOT from home to office - and back. Was burning CDs, but WHAT a hassle! Was becoming a full time job keeping up with syncronizing the latest updated folders. The 3000LE was my answer and has become a mobile archive/server unit, and What a Godsend it has been!
First, Do NOT buy the 7200 rpm units thinking they are faster - they are not! The 7200 rpm units have a MUCH slower disk seek time, and with a 9ms seek time, the 3000LE at 5400 rpm literally screams!
...that is... IF you have a 2.0 high speed USB port.
I backed up a 120mg database -not directly, but through the office LAN- in about 18 SECONDS.... not minutes - SECONDS, just by dragging and dropping because the network recognized the 3000LE as just another network drive.

HOWEVER, copying the same db in reverse at home ran almost 25 MINUTES!!
With a high speed (2.0) USB port it really IS just like another fast hard drive on your machine, or your network, but without it [read: 1 year old laptop like I'm using with 1.1 USB vs. 2.0] you might as well keep burning CDs.

ALSO - With Xp, no need to even have the install disk. I plugged it in to 3 different XP machines and they all set me up automatically, and even told me upfront if the machine was NOT a USB high speed connector.
1 last thought. If you plan on going mobile between house and home, buy a second AC adapter and USB cord so you don't have to fool around moving the adapters and cords....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
Easy to install, large capacity, good performance. Even with USB 1.1, the speed seems pretty good. I upgraded to USB 2.0, and now the Maxtor drive seems as fast as the internal hard drive on my notebook. (However, the speed with the USB 2.0 connection is only about 10x faster -- the so-called "40x faster" claim only refers to the maximum throughput that USB 2.0 is capable of, not the actual performance improvement that you'll see with this hard drive.)

This is an ideal, low-cost storage solution for notebook users. But, if you want to transfer multiple gigabytes of data very quickly, I strongly recommend getting a USB 2.0 card. For notebook users, I recommend the IBM USB 2.0 cardbus card (ASIN: B00006HUXD, Part Number: 33L3245) because it will only use one card slot. (Many USB 2.0 cardbus cards on the market will actually take up both slots because the USB ports will block the other slot.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good product overall
I wanted an external storage device mainly for back up and to share with other (networked) computers at home. We have 3 desktops (combined 65GB) and 3 laptops (combined 45GB), so a 120GB would be adequate for backup. I bought the Maxtor 3000LE locally from a large retailer mainly for a hard to pass price of about one thirty including sales tax and after rebate. I will admit Maxtor was not on my brands' list (Western digital, Buslink or Iogear), but the price was the deciding factor. I installed it on my desktop, under W98SE and USB 2. Initially, with W98, I downloaded microsoft's update for Fdisk/Format as advised. The instructions are very simple, but imply your OS running with a "hot" plug-in, but my computer kept freezing and crashing (with the dreaded blue screen), and kept having to shut the power off and restart (with scan disk). Eventually I installed the driver CD and shut down. Then I attached the USB 2 cable and powered on, and BINGO. Finally, I formatted and ran a "THOROUGH" scandisk (that was an overnight job and took about 12 hours; WOW! 120GB & glad I did not buy a bigger drive), but I do not believe it is essential. So far, it works fine and it shows as a separate drive in "My Computer" with 111GB, and set it up as a shared drive. I backed up about 4GB from my desktop in about 20-25 minutes. Then I went to another networked desktop computer which has a wireless 802.11b adapter through a USB 1 slot. It did see the Maxtor as a shared drive, and backed up about 1.5GB, which took about an hour. So USB 2 is faster than USB 1, but neither what you would expect based on stated calculations of 12Mbs for USB 1 and 480Mbs for USB 2. I contacted Maxtor upon registration, and got an email reply the next day. They explained the difference of stated 120GB, vs. only 111GB showing, having to do with decimal and binary systems. Windows and OS use the binary system which apparently sees 1GB as about 1.074 "decimal GB". Their "detailed" explanation was too detailed (fancy/computer mumbo-jumbo) for me, and I wish I never asked; also they made no comments on the speed/transfer issue. The box states 5400RPM, but the drive itself has a sticker underneath with the S/N, and states 7200RPM. It does not have an on/off switch, and you have to "stop" it from the system tray, just like you would a PC card, before you disconnect and remove it. It gets warm being on all the time, but not hot, and it seems to have adequate ventilation slots and is quiet. It has to sit horzontally flat, and cannot lay vertically on its side. It has only a one year warranty, and time will tell how it holds up. However, it is faster than conventional "internal" system back up and without taking up native hard drive space, and is also better than using/burning CD's. However, for crucial data, do not solely rely on it, but use it as a second line of recovery, and keep the data on your native hard drive as your first line. I heard of someone at work who kept all crucial business data only on an external drive which he carried with him out of town with his laptop, and unfortunately that drive got lost on a trip. You may possibly have to resort even to a third line of recovery (CD's, tape, outside server), depending on how crucial your data is.
I have no regrets about my purchase due to the price then (even cheaper than comparable internal IDE drives). Overall, however, I would recommend Maxtor 3000LE. Thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken after 7 months very light use
Got this drive in the end of last year. And today when I wake up and turn on the computer, it's broken. Can't open any folders, files ... I just wish I have never bought this drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Functional, fast, and easy to setup
Being the first time I had used an external hard drive, I was surprised at the speed of this drive when used with a PCI USB 2.0 card (I installed this at the same time). Installation was immediate and painless (I used WinXP). It is also quiet. From my research, it seemed like a more cost-effective way of doing it than putting a regular EIDE hard drive in an enclosure kit but I'm sure that would have the same effect. I have only been using it for a few days, but so far I've been very happy indeed with it. ... Read more
