5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, quiet drive
I'm very happy with this Maxtor 30 GB drive. It's so quiet I cannot hear it running, even during read and write operations. I've partitioned it for Windows 98 and Linux, and though I have an older Pentium-II which doesn't support UDMA, I've had no trouble with the drive.

4-0 out of 5 stars A review for Macintosh users
I have a Macintosh G4 (AGP) that shipped with a 20gig Western Digital drive. My internal 20gig was filled to the brim with mp3 files and I now that I have an iPod to sync to, I didn't want to delete any of the mp3 files on my drive.

The Maxtor drive was recommended to me[....]P>I had never installed a hard drive in my life, but after surfing different Mac sites, I saw photos that showed how simple it was.

The drive works great and I had to make absolutely no modifications to the jumpers... literal plug-n-play and boot-up. I kept the internal 20gig and put this 80gig drive on top in the slave drive rack.

I connected the ribbon cable and power connector, closed the panel and started up the Mac. The drive didn't show up because it hadn't been initialized. I used Mac Drive Setup (all Macs should have a copy of this installed by default on the internal Hard Drive... there will also be a copy on your System CD) to initialize and partition the new drive which took less than 1 minute.

My less than perfect rating is due to the total absence of Mac-related documentation with this drive. The box it comes in has both the Windows and Macintosh symbols/trade markers, showing that the drive is compatible with both platforms.

The drive comes in an electrostatic bag and is well packed in heavy foam rubber and comes with a mounting bracket to make this drive fit in 5.25" drive bays in older PCs. It also ships with an extra ribbon cable and 8 screws.

In addition, it ships with a floppy disc and a CD-ROM. The instructions tell you that you will find all the information you need on the CD. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. If someone has a failed hard drive (not just adding a 2nd drive like I was doing), it is impossible for them to use the CD or do anything.

Still, the tiny printed sheet inside the box implied that all jumper settings, etc. would be on the CD-ROM. I loaded the CD in my Mac, and wouldn't you know it, not one Mac-compatible file on the whole disc.

I threw caution to the wind and plugged everything together as-is and it worked on the first try. I'm not sure whether this was solely due to the simplicity of the Mac or because of superior settings on the Maxtor drive, but either way, I am very pleased to now have space enough to use Photoshop and store more mp3 files. [....]

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, drive, poor instructions.
Anyways, this hard drive is a great one, VERY VERY good...I can't even hear it right now, and it is fast as hell. 9ms? Try about 2 or 4. And the capacity is great too, though I don't run a warez site, I do collect alot of programs and that means I need lotsa space, not just 10 lousy mb like my old drive. The only fault with this is with the manual. It goes take out, place on holders, poor poor diagram of screws, put in drive, another poor poor diagram of where screws should go, and then put in tape/power (no diagram at all!). And also they only send you half the screws you need. But it gets a 4 because it makes up for all this in drive quality. I recommend this drive for more intermediate-advanced computer people, novices get a different product or you will have to pay for a computer store to do it for you. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Feel cheated!
I feel duped and cheated! When I opened the MAXTOR box, I found a slip of paper that says "IMPORTANT NEWS. Quantum HDD has merged with Maxtor Corp. The drive included in this kit meet Mastor's rigorus quality standards. The MaxDiag utility that came with this kit will NOT work properly with Quantum models, etc, etc.". How am I supposed to diagnose problems WITHOUT it!SO, I didn't purchase a Maxtor hard drive like as advertised!! I will probably NOT buy anything from Amazon OR Maxtor again! Again, I feel cheated and am VERY angry about this!!

1-0 out of 5 stars worked for only 14 days
It was fast. But worked for only 14 days, then it's physically broken, sounded like a broken electric saw. Since Maxtor claims they are not responsible for any data damage, I think my files are forever gone. Besides noise (which is tolerable though), this drive was way too hot, I guess the accumlated heat finally killed it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great so far, but don't use their formatting software
I'm not a hardware jock, so when I decided to install this HD at home one Sunday afternoon I was in a bit of a cold sweat. But I shouldn't have been, installation was a breeze -- the hardest part by far was tightening the screws in the bay (space was cramped). Slaved my old drive to it, no problem.

But don't format the drive using Maxtor's software. I did this and it went so fast that it seemed too good to be true. It was! After a few days a desktop icon went blank, and when I investigated why, I found that not only the file but the whole directory it was in had been lost. I called the computer store and they told me the problem was with the Maxtor formatting software. I'd violated a general rule: unless the installation manual specifically requires you to use their software, use the old DOS standbys fdisk (to partition) and format. Fortunately, the disk was mostly empty anyway, so I didn't lose much data, and I always have full backups so I wasn't too anxious.

The drive itself is whisper-quiet, fast, and roomy. Am very pleased with it so far, but I hope it's not bad luck to rate hardware before the warranty period has expired!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maxtor hit the "sweet spot" with this drive
This 7200rpm hdd is a remarkable value from a reliable company. The size, speed and overall performance make this a tremendous value. I find it quite easy to install Maxtor drives thanks to their Max-Blast software (version 1.24S was included with my drive, an improvement over versions 9.x & 1.11M). Data transfer from the old drive to the new goes smoothly 9 times out of 10 (I'm a tech and I install hard drives on a regular basis -- usually at least two per day five days a week). Maxtor's solid, no-hassle return policy and 3-year warranty have never let me down. When a 5GB hdd died on me I returned it; they were delayed in getting me a replacement so they apologized and sent me a 13.6GB 7200rpm drive for my trouble. This company means business and I just purchased 3 more of these drives...Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars destroyed my system
the instructions say easy as "1-2-3" - but i spent about 8 hours yesterday trying to install this thing and succeeded only in destroying my old drive (i didn't have anywhere large enough to back up the data to before attempting installation). today i'm taking the computer to a data recovery service to the tune of about $600. so i give 1 star on the basis of ease of installation and poor documentation/tech help. if you're a hardware whiz, you may not have similar problems - but for regular people out there - don't try this at home. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars some people doing reviews are crazy....
I haven't had the drive long enough to write a proper review but I felt I could help by clearing some things up. #1, this drive does NOT have a power button on it. To the person who says it does, did you actually look in the manual and/or push the button? It's not power, it's the Maxtor One Touch button. Maybe you have a different model.

And to the person who claimed that the drive isn't USB 2.0, I'm sorry but that's completely wrong. The drive is 2.0 and backwards compatible to 1.x. To get 2.0 performance you need a USB 2.0 port in your computer!!! They put an asterisk on the box to inform you that if you have 1.1 and want to ugprade to 2.0 they have a card (PCI USB 2.0) they will sell you. I'm sure it was frustrating for you to discover that your PC only had a 1.x USB port and you needed to buy something additional. But a good portion (I would say most) of folks know that to get USB 2.0 speed you need to have a USB 2.0 port. If a company sells you a UDMA 133 IDE drive and you're on UDMA 66 or 100 you're going to get reduced speed until you upgrade your IDE. The person said they replaced it with a Western Digital Drive, but unless that box came with a USB 2.0 PCI card included the results would have been the same.

I've had the drive 1 week so far it seems good and the transfer speed at USB 2.0 is good. Hopefully it will last.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Secondary/Backup Hard Drive for Laptops!
I have been using Maxtor external hard drives for just over a year now and have made recommendations to family and colleagues which have resulted in them buying many of them as well. So with experience with close to a dozen hard drives, we have not had any problems and have nothing but praise for the drives.

First off, with internal hard drive prices for laptops so expensive and so difficult to install, external hard drives that use firewire (IEEE1394) are a great option. These hard drives use both firewire and USB, so you can take the information and hot swap it among multiple computer (like a thumb drive) or keep it plugged in to a single computer for use a secondary hard drive. I have found virtually no speed difference between accessing files on the external hard drive versus the internal.

The automatic backup feature, makes the hard drive all that much more useful. It comes bundled with Dantz Retrospect Express program which is an easy-to-use option for automatically backing up just what you want with a touch of a button. I backup often, usually just punching the button as I go meet to clients. It usually finishes the automated process by the time I return. Because backing up is so easy to do, when I did lose the hard drive on one of my laptops, I barely missed a beat after I got it replaced, simply restoring the drive image to make my new laptop look just like my old one.

I highly recommend Maxtor external hard drives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dependability a Thing of the Past
I have always been impressed with the durability of the Hard Drives purchased in the past, no matter what brand. Most often I would choose Maxtor as the drive of choice. Those days are gone I'm sad to say. I have owned this drive for two years and it has failed terminally without hopes of recovery. I guess nothing has changed, instead of high prices and longevity, it is now cheaper but you will buy more in the long run. I'm sad to see it happen.

3-0 out of 5 stars software doesn't work
I've just read the previous 9 reviews and they certainly differ. There is one constant, however - the so called "one-touch backup" doesn't work. The hardware has worked OK for me so far and I was contemplating buying another identical drive, but I can't seem to find one in a retail store, which may mean that Maxtor is pulling them because of problems. I only use mine for backup, but if there is any chance of mechanical failure I will probably replace it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Failed in under a month
Within a month of buying this drive, before I had to get it even half full, it spontaneously failed. It is no longer recognized as formatted and I have tried unsuccessfully to get my data back. It wasn't overworked either, as I hadn't even written any sector more than 3 times. Windows XP may have had something to do with it, but given what others have stated about failing, I believe this (and counterparts of other sizes) are junk. This line of products is crap. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Maxtor ST0152000H- the R2D2 of Hard Drives
When I'd read reviews of the maxtor drives I was apprehensive about using their data transfer software from my old HD to the new one. I tried, unsuccessfully, to do it many other ways, and ultimately, it turns out their software worked brilliantly. I'm running a 400Mhz AMD-K6 chip on an old school compaq presario (the tempermental kind) and was told that a computer of my... vintage... might not recognize any more space than the 20 gigger. Well, it worked out very nicely, and I couldn't be happier. The software that comes with the HD is very simple and straight forward, very helpful. It's quiet, it's fast, it's dependable, and it's also idiot friendly. Prior to this, I'd not done any kind of hardware installation besides RAM, and they walked me through it quite effortlessly. Just be sure to configure the jumpers the right way and you shouldn't have a problem. Fantastic hard drive!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best hard drive I have ever bought.
I bought this as a replacement drive for my 6 gig. Maxtor. A very good drive in its self but not a lot of space. This drive is, without question, the best hard drive I have ever bought. It out performs any other IDE drive I have used. Even my old Western Digital drives. Back from when they were the number one manufacturer. Not only is it fast, it's really very quiet. So quiet that I didn't even know it was on until my computer came on.

I didn't have to play with the jumpers or the Maxtor MaxBlast Plus software at all. I just took the old one out, re-attached the IDE cable and power to the new one, closed up the computers case, and started the computer up. I then had to format the drive, load an operating system, and restore all my data from back-ups. I was up and running in about 30-40 minutes. The drive is jumpered to support this type of replacement right out of the box. If you plan to add a new hard drive for additional storage space you may need to re-jumper both your old drive and your new one.

Every single hard drive created today has a jumper chart on it. The jumper chart will show you where to place the jumper for all three hard drive configuration settings Master, Slave, and Cable Select (Manufacture Default). Tip: If you're placing both drives on the same IDE cable, jumper the old drive as Master and the new drive as Slave.

If you're new to replacing hard drives, I do suggest you obtain help. Replacing a hard drive isn't hard, but it is frustrating if you have never done it before and run into a problem. You should also obtain hardware and warranty information from you computer manufacturer. You don't want to void your warranty just because you opened the computer and you weren't supposed to.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boycott Maxtor/Quantum drives!
I've had this drive for a little over two years, and it's already starting to break on me. It shows telltale signs that my old Quantum BigFoot drives used to have... namely, loud clacking noises followed by pauses of a second or so (where the computer becomes inoperable), until one day, you turn the computer on, and the drive clacks and clangs and never boots... and it never will again! The worst case of this happened in college during a week when I had a lot of assignments due, all of which were on the drive.

The prices on their drives are tempting; that's what drew me in. But now I know better to shell out the extra couple of bucks (literally) for a Western Digital or, better yet, Seagate. Maxtor drives may be big, but they're not necessarily built to last.

But if you're looking for a scratch, slave drive, this could be useful. Just don't trust it with important files or your operating system (unless you know how to re-install an operating system).

By the way, the reason I stopped to write this review, is because I am looking for a replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best drives I have ever had!
I bought one just like this about two years ago and I haven't had any significant problems with it since. It stays cool and runs great, even though I re-format and install quite a bit (sometimes due to Windows problems but mostly because I like to try other operating systems). Currently I have 4 on my drive, one in a virtual partition within Windows. I wanted to try the newest Red Hat but didn't have enough room, so I ordered another one so I can spread things out a bit.

The installation went great the first time and I am expecting the second drive to be just as reliable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissappoitment
I owned this product for @30 days. I was warned after I bought it that the SCSI version runs very hot and one burnt up on my brother-in-laws system soon after he purchased it. He warned me that it needs much cooling because his burnt up. Near the 30 day warranty my IDE version fried. This unit was a very loud unit to the point that it rattled a solid mid-tower case. It is manufactured by Quantum's fireball which Maxtor acquired. I traded mine in on a Maxtor 5400 40gig which has been bullet proof so far and is very quiet. I have talked with another user who after bringing back two, was happy with the 3rd attributing the bad ones to a bad production lot. ... Read more
