Product Description

Maxtor MaXLine Plus II drives are ultra-reliable enterprise-class disk drives with better speed and density than tape or optical solutions for superior near-line storage. Maxtor uses a proprietary process to engineer, build and test a select group of drives that achieve enterprise-class MTTF of greater than one million hours. MaXLine Plus II drives are ideal for demanding, full-time enterprise applications where cost per GB and storage density are critical parameters. They offer 7200 RPM spin speeds, capacities to 250GB, <9.1 ms average seek time, a choice of Maxtor-developed Ultra ATA/133 or serial ATA interfaces, and a 2MB buffer.MaXLine Plus II drives are a better choice for many applications that have historically utilized tape, optical media, SCSI or Fiber Channel drives. MaXLine Plus II drives are already proven as the heart of network attached storage systems from major original equipment manufacturers. The MaXLine Plus II drive offers storage capacity, data access times and data transfer rates significantly better than any tape or optical system on the market today. The 3.5-inch drives are also easy to integrate into existing storage systems, with complementary hardware controller and software solutions in place that emulate tape-based near-line libraries. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good...
Just received package last night, set up back-up script, and completed first back up of entire home system. Had no major problems, followed the user manual to the letter. At one point, if the user wants to do the one-touch back-up set-up, pushing the button was supposed to take you to a particular screen, which it didn't. I believe I followed the steps as instructed. Cancelled and did again and it took me to the correct screen. Otherwise worked well, simple set-up overall.

Plenty of space, maybe a little pricey at $1 per Gigabyte but my needs will only likely expand with media intensive files and back-up will be essential. So far so good. I will wait and see what routine back-ups etc will do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Secondary/Backup Hard Drive for your laptop!
I have been using Maxtor external hard drives for just over a year now and have made recommendations to family and colleagues which have resulted in them buying many of them as well. So with experience with close to a dozen hard drives, we have not had any problems and have nothing but praise for the drives.

First off, with internal hard drive prices for laptops so expensive and so difficult to install, external hard drives that use firewire (IEEE1394) are a great option. These hard drives use both firewire and USB, so you can take the information and hot swap it among multiple computer (like a thumb drive) or keep it plugged in to a single computer for use a secondary hard drive. I have found virtually no speed difference between accessing files on the external hard drive versus the internal.

The automatic backup feature, makes the hard drive all that much more useful. It comes bundled with Dantz Retrospect Express program which is an easy-to-use option for automatically backing up just what you want with a touch of a button. I backup often, usually just punching the button as I go meet to clients. It usually finishes the automated process by the time I return. Because backing up is so easy to do, when I did lose the hard drive on one of my laptops, I barely missed a beat after I got it replaced, simply restoring the drive image to make my new laptop look just like my old one.

I highly recommend Maxtor external hard drives.

3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Hard Drive, GREAT Price, GREAT Performance
Maxtorf 300 Gig (yes, not MB but 300 GIGs... At Amazon.com's price for the of $316.44 and availability usually shipping in 24 hours (and sometimes even less!) I would recommend you buy this for your piece of mind.

My unit has been hammering along very good since I hooked it up. Actually, it's very interesting to hear and feel the thump, thump, thump, and vibration, plus it gets luke warm to the touch. It is however SOOOOooooooo quiet. It is in the same room as my new baby boy and he is able to sleep all night now.

It is pretty darn fast, but, not so fast as to get a speeding ticket. I've only connected it through it's USB 4.0 port and it is blazingly fast compared to USB 1.0 or USB 2.0. It's definitely fast enough for my purposes (email me for details, I cannot write why I need 300 gigs in a public forum).

I want to personally rely on this drive as a true backup. I back up 13 computers in my house onto this drive. You never want to have a crash with all-your-eggs-in-one-basket. The OneTouch flashes with a pretty blue light that keeps my new baby boy awake into the late of night (in kind of a trance).

Does anyone know what FWIW means?

For the most part, for the most part I am delighted with this here 300 gig drive. I, and my new baby boy recommend you buy one or two today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great storage capacity at a low cost
This unit has been humming along nicely since I connected it. Actually, it's very difficult to hear the humming, as the drive is SOoooo quiet.

It's pretty fast, albeit, not as fast as a 7200RPM drive, but I've got it connected via USB2.0, and it's definitely fast enough for my purposes, especially at THIS price.

Although I personally don't want to rely on the drive as a true backup, it DOES give you the ability to make another copy of your HDDs so that you don't have all-your-eggs-in-one-basket. To this end, I found that the "One-Touch" button seems to limit you to only backing up one drive (as far as I can see). I wanted to make copies of the contents of two networked computers, each with two HDDs. From what I see, you have to do this manually ... no big deal, really, and it looks like it CAN be done with a script, but I haven't tried this yet.

FWIW, I reformatted the drive to use NTFS, which worked OK on Win2K, but it did not give me an optimized format, so I redid it using Paragon Partition Manager 5.5.

All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lasted less than a year
I bought this hard drive initially for backup, but eventually I had moved a lot of photos and other media onto it alone, along with older schoolwork and such. Over the summer, I had to reformat my main hard drive, and never moved a lot of the backup stuff onto the main drive. Then one day this drive just stopped working. The red "thinking" light would not go off and the computer would not assign it a drive letter. Maxtor did oblige in replacing the drive for free, but would not even consider trying to actually fix the problem. They were quite cordial about replacing the drive, but the replacement is useless to me without the 25+ GB I had on the old drive. The warranty is voided if the casing is opened, so I can't try to fix it on my own, and my only option according to Maxtor is to get a company to attempt data recovery- a very expensive task. What bothers me most is that Maxtor wouldn't even explain what the problem was, let alone try to fix it or allow me to. Thumbs down for a product that didn't even last a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Virus Immune Backup - Plug and Play with XP
What I wanted was an inexpensive detachable data back up drive that I could use with the backup features of XP-Pro. I wanted it detachable because then it is immune to any virus that might attack the main hard drive. I wanted USB 2.0 because it is "fast".

This drive accomplishes all those goals. First it is inexpensive. Second, it is not at the leading edge of speed so it is probably more reliable - an important quality for back up media. Third, it is plug and play with XP. Fourth, it works transparently with the backup SW in XP-Pro.

The initial backup of my (then) 12.7Gb of data took a little while. After the initial backup I set the default mode to incremental. I do a virus update and scan over night on Thursday, and then if there are no virus problems, run the incremental backup on Friday morning. Running the backup is trivial - I plug the drive into the computer, it is recognized, and ready to go in seconds. Go to the back up program and with about three clicks of the mouse the backup is under way.

In incremental mode it typically does the backup of the 500 to 600 files (250Mb or so of data) that have changed since last time in less than 3 minutes. Then the drive can be disconnected and shut down till the next week backup session, and I'm ready to begin the next week.

It is as close to painless data backup as one can get for the money. It also has the benefit that I can plug it into my laptop and back that up to a different file from time to time, and I can use it to move data between computers in large chunks.

Works for me.

Did I mention I like this drive?

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to install, runs well, if only it had a higher RPM
This is the "white refrigerator" of computer add-ons. No bells and whistles, but to install this hard drive on my Windows XP computer, all I had to do was plug the power in and attach the USB cable. I wish everything worked this easily.
If it ran at 7800 RPM, I'd have gotten the 100GB model for video storage. Previous reviews cited the drive's noise, the reviewer must have had a sub-par model, no one in my office can hear any noise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Revised rating: an OKAY drive, nothing fancy.
UPDATE: 12/17/2002

I thought I had previously submitted a revision of my review but it looks like it got lost. Therefore, for the record, I'd like to point out that the unit I reviewed below eventually died and I got a replacement directly from Maxtor (they have a very good returns policy). The replacement has not had any errors, and was initially completely silent. After several months of use when it was pretty much continuously on it did develop a high pitched whine again. Not as bad as before but definitely not silent. Its louder than anything else in my PC. For this reason I keep it off mostly now.

For anytone looking for a very quiet hard drive I would now recommend Seagate Baraccuda IV fluid bearing drive. Put that in a standard ... USB 2.0 drive enclosure and you'll be happy and have a simple upgrade path in the future. I look forward to Serial ATA becoming more prevelant and making frequent swapping of drive packs more feasible (IDE connectors are not designed for frequent use, the pins tend to bend too easily).

For the record (I don't believe in re-writing history), here is my original review...

------------------------------------------------------------

I bought this because I was excited with the prospect of a large amount of detachable storage that was easily connected to any USB enabled PC, and offered fast access for those with USB2.0 (I bought a USB2.0 card for my main server machine).

Unfortunately I was somewhat disappointed with the drive and the concept of USB storage for three reasons:

1. While the drive is quiet it emits a high pitched whine that I can easily hear from 20 feet away. Its not loud, its just the high pitch that means you can hear it in a quiet room.

2. For the above reason I'd be tempted to power down the drive, however that means I need to stop the device on my PC and the turn it off (there is no on/off switch, you just disconnect the power cable). However that it a pain to do and hence I end up having it running all the time and just ignoring the whine as best I can...

3. I've twice had occasions when connecting the drive has resulted in repeated "thunks" and no e:/ drive appearing on my computer. The most recent time it happened I discovered the drive had got a corrupted master boot record that took a couple of hours of research to figure out how to repair (chkdsk wont do it). I've no idea how that happened - the drive was shut down correctly and was sitting unmoved the whole time.

So I'm now suspicious of my drive and worried about loading it up with any more data. I've no idea if I have a common problem, or if its USB related, or an issue with NTFS, but I'm going to check with Maxtor. I think I'll get another drive (this time a Buslink) and back everything up and if I have this problem a third time its going back for a refund! I'm interested to hear if anyone else had similar problems. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not happy
This is a cheaper drive than I expected. I contacted tech support about some problems I had with this. The rattling noise that really annoys me is caused by the drive heads moving to a resting position where it "rattles" harmlessly. They told me its due to the fact its their low end no frills drive. I wouldn't have bought this had I known about the noise. Its very annoying.

Also have a problem where the drive doesn't come up on startup. They say sometimes data gets trapped in a buffer, and the drive won't work until it clears the buffer. But since its "data" the drive is refusing to purge it. Usually unplugging the power and removing the USB cable for a minute does the trick. But not this time..... I may have a nonfunctioning drive until I can get to a repair shop when they open on monday....

Very unhappy right now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, external storage
The gist of things is that this drive is quick, reliable, and sturdy. Upon installing it and connecting it to my USB 2 with the appropriate cable, the device worked like a charm. I was able to easily copy files to the hard drive, move and delete files from it, and generally perform tasks any other hard drive would be capable of. (I haven't tried the One-Touch feature and don't plan to, so I will refrain from commenting on it.)
My only gripe with this hard drive is that when I have to manually reboot my computer (which is a 1 GHZ Dell, 512 MB Ram, Windows ME) and ScanDisk comes up, often, after ScanDisk has finished, Windows doesn't start loading again for at least another two or three minutes. This is VERY frustrating, especially since occasionally the computer freezes completely and I have to manually reboot again. Fortunately I don't have to manually reboot twice terribly often. I'm not sure what the problem is - it may just be the way our computer is set up, for some reason - but I wish it would stop.
Bottom line? This hard drive is great. But if your computer has similar specs to mine, and you anticipate a problem such as the one I've mentioned, consider upgrading your whole computer to a newer system, which for all I know might fix the problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars It could have been five stars
I have this drive for a few months and original impression was very positive. Installation was very easy, the use is very intuitive, etc. I am glad I didn't write review at that time. The reason is that my drive failed. It indicated that there is I/O error and although the drive was recognized by the system it didn't work. Well, I understand that everything can happen and just because my drive failed it doesn't necessarily mean that something wrong with the product in general. Roughly at the same time when I purchased this unit for home we bought three drives for work. Two of these three drives failed (with the same symptoms). To the benefit of Maxtor I should say that the replacement procedure was quite smooth and organized (but that could be because they have so much experience replacing faulty units). Anyway, when three out of four units fail something is definitely wrong. Two stars just because I still liked the unit (when it worked)

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Unreliable Drive
I bought a Maxtor 5000DV 120 GB drive and it worked well at first, but then one day I had an I/O error and lost everything on the hard drive. My whole music collection!! The Maxtor people were of NO HELP. I reformatted the disc, and it seems to work, but now I am afraid it will mess up again. SO I can't use it for anything important. A waste of money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crashed within 2 years
Unfortunately one of my two 5000DV's crashed within about 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars great backup drive
I was using this drive for 2 years both with my Apple G4, Powerbook 1GHZ and iBook 1GHZ. It never failed to appear within seconds on the desktop while connected via Firewire. In fact I am going to buy one more as you can connect them together in a chain. Also, it could be more than just backup drive. I run numerous applications from it. I will not recommend to run Final Cut Pro from it, even though it might work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard drive imaging was the best solution
My wife thought changing to a larger drive would mess things up for certain but not with the software and directions included.

Maxtor provides easy to follow instructions and software with the ability to copy an image of your existing drive onto the new one. While the actual process takes some time depending on the amount of data on the old drive I've experienced flawless uptime and my computer seems twice as fast now even to my wife.

The AMD K-6 333MHz accesses data twice as fast as before, loads internet content much faster and runs circles around the Intel Celeron 500 MHz I have at work thanks to the 7200 rpm and dual processors on the hard drive. Thanks Maxtor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Speed Demon
With the included ATA/66 cable this things rocks. It's the fastest I've seen a drive go through scandisk. Windows boots faster and twenty gigs is lot of room for all of those games I have lying around. Install is easy with a Win98 boot disk to support using it as one big drive instead of partitioning it. Maxtor once again makes a great drive at an affordable price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Drive; installation tricky
I've had this drive a week and it performs excellent. I did have some problems with installation. The drive cable included is a bit on the short side. I was unable to connect both my original drive and the Maxtor due to placement in my machine. Luckly I had an old 486 in the closet with a longer IDE cable. Use caution when using the EZ-Bios option. I used it when I was unable to find the key combination for BIOS setup on my machine. Also you may want to change the CD drive setting yourself in the control panel. Everything worked fine for a few days, but upon installing an Microsoft application to my new drive and doing the usual restart my new drive disappeared. Finally locating the key cobination for BIOS (oodly enough omitted from my manual) I could see that my BIOS was detecting the new drive nicely. The solution was to go back and disable ez-bios from ALL the HD's. I have no doubt of the quality and performance of this drive, but the installation program included seemed to be lacking in quality. I still have not been able to copy my original system drive to the new Maxtor drive with the program included. Despite all my problems with installation I still highly recommend this drive. We all know how finicky computers can be. If you do have problems installing the drive do not despair, stick with it. Also if you have an E-machine computer tower plan to have a longer cable. Also ALT-Page Down for BIOS settings, or alt-home etc, something like that ;) but stay away from that EZ-BIOS if you can. Remeber, if you have problems installing this drive -- learn from them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent combination of performance and value.
I purchased the 20GB 7200 RPM Maxtor drive to replace my existing Western Digital 6.4 GB 5400 RPM hard drive. The installation went incredibly smoothly. If you are replacing a master drive, I highly recommend thrid party software, unless you just want to do a "clean" install on the new drive.

The drive itself performs quite well. It's fast, quiet (which was a pleasant surprise after becoming used to my "noisy" WD Caviar), and a wonderdful value.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too bad software included
The IEEE-1394 card and cable works fine with my system. It can even be used to connect a notebook with desktop. But the Arcsoft ShowBiz software included in the package is totally a piece of junk.
It can download video clips as .avi files in huge size (>2G)from DV to your hard drives. But if you want to transfer these clips into MPEG or other file types, it will quit without any error notice. Sometimes it can churn out a smaller file with extream slow speed, but later you will find out the sound track of your video clip has been seriously biased. It has been slowed down and everything sounds weird with lower frequencies.

I don't recommend this product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maxtor DV Producer
The card caused by PC to never shut down. Maxtor had no clue. I swapped it with my friend's card (different brand) and it worked on his. His worked on mine. The ArcSoft software is OK but tech support is nonexistent.

I would not recommend this product.. ... Read more
