Amazon.com Review

The Z25 is one of those printers whose price is lower than those of its replacement ink cartridges, so it's a real bargain only for those who print infrequently. This is very much an entry-level printer, where Lexmark has battened down all the hatches to produce an inkjet device at very little initial cost. Its simple design, which sees the rear paper-feed tray fold down on top of the printer when it's not in use, has a simple pullout tray at the front to catch the printed pages. There are just two physical controls, a power button and a paper-feed button. Everything else is done under software control.

To set up the printer, we inserted the single, tricolor cartridge (a second, black cartridge is an optional extra), loaded the printer driver--which supports any version of Windows from 98 on or Mac OS from 8.2--and the Z25 was ready to go. The driver is well-designed and offers useful information, such as ink level and automatic detection of cartridge replacement. It also speaks to you with progress and error messages.

In our tests, without a black cartridge, black text came out looking dark brown, rather than truly black, and because the printer must lay down all three colours, the print speed was low. A standard five-page text document took nearly 5 minutes to print, giving the Z25L a real-world print speed of just over 1 page per minute (ppm), far less than the rated 9 ppm black and 6 ppm color. It's best to invest in the second cartridge.

A 3-by-5-inch photo came out surprisingly well. Although we saw some dithering in areas of steady tone, the colors were bright, if not completely accurate. The 1,200 x 1,200 dpi resolution is high enough for most needs but is realized only on premium photo papers. The print time, at just over 3 minutes, is pretty good, particularly for a printer in this price range.

The Z25L comes with a one-year exchange warranty, during which time Lexmark will swap out any faulty device. It has a heavy duty cycle of up to 2,000 pages per month and is comparatively quiet in operation. Overall, the Lexmark Z25 represents very good value for money. --Simon Williams ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality for the price
This is a good quality printer for a very good price.
Printing is not too fast, but I never had a problem. The software is good and runs great with Xp. Ideal for home use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine for home, not for an office.
This is a neat little printer. It is light, so it is easy to move around. It is easy to install, and really easy to operate. The print quality is also excellent for such a small printer. It takes two cartridges, a black one and a multi-colour one.

The paper handlers slip neatly into the body of the printer when it is not in use, so it takes up very little desk space. And even when in use it is very neat. The paper holder is vertical, so it takes up no space behind the printer. So only the printed document tray is using up space as you print.

The drawback is the speed. It is very slow, especially printing a full colour document. But there has to be some drawback when you purchase anything, and for the price this is an excellent home printer. Because it is easy to use, the kids are less likely to mess with it.

If you are running an office, forget it! It is just too slow for business use. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great printer, ink supplies will nearly bankrupt you
I have used my z705 for less than two months. The reason I gave it any stars is because the print quality is quite good for a disposable printer. Unfortunately, the black ink cartridge runs out quickly and replacements are overpriced. This is the second Lexmark I have ditched and purchased a Canon i560 instead.

Pros:
Good print quality
Cheap price

Cons:
You are better off buying another brand of printer than feeding the overpriced Lexmark cartridges to this printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer for the price
Setup is fast and easy. The printer is reasonably fast and very quiet. Even without the special photo ink cartidge, photos printed on glossy paper look great. Printed text looks fine, too. It's a great little printer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Low price, good quality, easy setup
This is a compact and fast little printer. I use Windows XP Pro, and the setup was practically instantaneous; I've never seen setup instructions with no words, just diagrams, before, but it worked flawlessly first time.

The construction is reasonably robust -- not too plasticky. The footprint is about 18" by 9" with the feed racks pulled in, but realistically you need about 18" wide by at least 10-12" deep -- the front rack, which gathers the paper, can stick off the table OK. The footprint is 18" by 18" with both racks pulled out. The cartridges snapped in perfectly; everything worked fine immediately. The paper feed is not finicky at all and aligned the paper perfectly.

The only criticism I have is simply that this is an inkjet and so without special paper (and even with) it's just not as precise as a laser. I printed out a couple of text pages: the text looked solid and black until I got up fairly close. There was just a tiny hint of fuzz on the diagonals, when I squinted, and a magnifying glass confirmed what I thought I saw -- the line is a little blurry.

The colour is strong and clear, and as precise as the black.

A couple of other points to note: the installation process will make this your default printer. That may well be what you want (it wasn't, for me), but if not then don't forget to go back and reset the system default via Start -> Printers. And secondly, note that Amazon also sells this with a USB cable for just one more dollar; this model doesn't have the cable, so get the other one if you don't have a cable to hand. Search for Z705 if you can't find the other one.

This is a great inkjet printer; for the price, this is as good as you're going to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome prints, awesome price!
Best printer I've ever bought, at the best price I've ever paid! Prints gorgeous borderless 4x6 prints, especially with the Photo cartridge (not included). Printing photos on regular paper don't generally come out looking all that great, however. But for photo printing with glossy paper, and general web page printing is lightning fast in Quick Print mode. Would highly recommend to anybody who doesn't print often, but who needs good photo quality. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disposable
The price is good, but what they don't tell you when you buy this printer is that you will need 1 of the 2 ink cartridges in about a month with just casual use. Oh yea, uh, the 2 cartridges are 50 bucks.
Don't waste your time or money unless you're using it as a disposable printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jams, smears, crawls at 6 min. per page. What's not to like?
This is my second Lexmark. I would never buy another. I only bought this second one because it was being sold at a fundraiser for my sister-in-law's chorus. It was brand new. First thing is that Consumer Reports wrote that the Lexmark ink is the most expensive of all the printer mfgrs.

I'm printing a Christmas newsletter on it. Gripe 1: The side with 6 pictures takes six minutes to print. Gripe 2: The black ink was half used after 40 pages! (This poor speed and ink performance is nowhere close to the specs Lexmark provides.) Gripe 3: The worse thing is that just like with my old Lexmark, the feed mechanism grabs unevenly, and the paper gets jammed. Or it doesn't grab at all. Gripe 4: After a major jam, it smeared ink on the backs of the next 10 pages, wasting lots of expensive paper and ink before I noticed it.

I have to babysit this thing. I hate it!

4-0 out of 5 stars yes you can refill the cartridge
simple enough
I used a refill kit which comes with a small hand drill, rubber stopper hyperdermic and two bottles of ink.
Drill into the top (I did it between the raised part of the cartridge) once you break through inject into the foam with the hyperdermic needle put in the rubber stopper. then insert cartridge in printer lie to the software say it is a new cartridge and off you go. Colour is a little harder i believe because there are 3 ink wells to find. it is a great little printer and fairly economical once you know how to refill :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't refill cartidge
inks run out quickly. and it is not refillable. the printer itself is cheap at $30, but the cartidge is also $30. might as well buy a new printer every time ink run out.

4-0 out of 5 stars No problems here . . .
I bought this printer almost a year ago. I don't need to print anything heavy, just papers for college or maybe a picture for my son to color. I must say that I have had no problems. The paper feeds fine and has never jammed on me. My papers come out beautifully. Maybe I just got a good one but it's fine for me. No, it doesen't come with a black cartridge just color and to print in black you want a black one but ink is just expensive from what I have seen. I haven't had any problems finding ink. I bought it at Best Buy and they carry ink as well as Circuit City and many online stores. Not sure I would suggest this for heavy duty work but for light home use it seems to be fine. I am on a tight budget as a single mom who works and goes to school and it's great for my family. Hope this helps in your purchase. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Lexmark's entry-level, four-color printer, the Z33, offers good print quality on plain paper, high resolution, and a decent print speed. Its design is straightforward, with a rear paper-feed hopper that folds down on top of the printer when it's not in use, and a simple pullout tray at the front to catch the printed pages. There are just two physical controls, power and paper-feed buttons on its top surface; everything else is done through software.

Insert the tricolor and black cartridges, load the printer driver on Windows or Mac OS, and the Z33 is ready to go. The driver is well-designed and offers useful information, such as ink level and automatic detection of cartridge replacements. The twin-cartridge design means that black print comes out looking truly black, and it prints a lot more quickly than a single-cartridge, three-color printer.

In our tests, a standard five-page text document printed in less than 1.5 minutes, giving the Z33 a real-world print speed of around 3.5 pages per minute. The 5-by-3-inch photo print on glossy photo paper also came out well, with generally accurate color, good definition, and no noticeable banding at its highest 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution. The print time--just under 3 minutes--is fair for a printer in this price range.

Color print on plain paper is well-detailed, and the high resolution means there is little sign of the dottiness that dithered colors can show. The smaller size of Lexmark's two ink cartridges means they have lower capacity than other brands, but the cost of replacement is also low, so overall cost per page is broadly comparable.

The Z33 comes with a one-year exchange warranty, during which time Lexmark will swap out any faulty device. As an entry-level product, this versatile, four-color printer offers a good compromise between speed and print quality, and it won't leave you penniless. --Simon Williams ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even usable
First of all, it's almost impossible to insert the paper into the paperfeeder properly. The fact that there is a button to make sure it is feeding in correctly should tell you just how annoyingly difficult this is.

I managed to, on multiple occasions, get it in there so that the printer would actually take the paper, but then the paper always got jammed. I tried printing with lots of paper in the feeder, with a normal amount, and with just one, but none of it mattered - it jammed every time.

The software that comes with this is also extremely annoying in that it tells you it's printing, that there's no paper, and that the paper is jammed in a loud computer voice. A simple popup window would do, but I guess this is for those computer users who are blind and need to be told in a loud, annoying voice.

I could not print a single page from this printer, so if that's what you're looking for, go for it. Otherwise, get a printer that actually works.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I've owned a Lexmark Z33 for about a year and a half, and I've had problems with it beginning after a few months of purchasing it. The main problems are the ink cartridges and the print quality. Not only does each one cost almost half the price of what I paid for the printer but they dry up rather quickly. Currently I'm having print quality issues where there are white lines running horizontally throughout printed text. This results in the text being pretty difficult to read. I've repeatedly tried their online troubleshooting solutions without success. The sharpness of the printouts diminishes with time.

I didn't buy this printer with high expectations - all I do is print out a few word documents and articles off the internet. But I'm pretty disappointed in Lexmark after purchasing this printer. After all, it's a pretty inexpensive printer but if this is an example of the quality of printers Lexmark turns out, it's pretty bad. I'm looking to purchase a new printer now, and if you are to, don't waste your time purchasing a Lexmark!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good..
I got this as a present for X-mas and haven't had any problems with it. Its a bit on the slow side, the print quality is about average, but all else is what I would expect from a low end printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Performer
I have owned the X75 for nearly 5 months and it has been nothing but constant problems. It would never perform as advertised. First, the cartridges were haywire. Then the software balked; then stopped altogether. Save your money and go to the local copier shop. In 5 months I got no more than 5 decent color photo copies and none from scanning/enlarging. Terrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lexmark does not honor their rebate offers
I purchased a Lexmark printer. One of the deciding factors is there was a rebate offer if I purchased an ink cartridge at the same time. To make a long story short, I sent the rebate in well in advance of the deadline, almost 2 months after the deadline I got a letter stating I had to send the proof-of-purchase (which I had sent and they returned it to me. It is the original, full p-o-p with part of the box cardboard still attached. I returned everything back to them. 2 months later, I get my unopened envelope sent back to me with a stamp stating "Return to Sender - Offer Expired"

As far as I'm concerned, Lexmark is a scam and I don't know how great their printers are, I will NEVER purchase anything from them again. It may seem like a piddly thing, but how many people have they done this too? Is this how they handle repairs and customer service? I don't trust them. I will not be replacing the cartridges in my printer, I'd rather buy a new printer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mhh I hope not all of the printers are this stuborn
I baught this printer when they just showed up and payed $120. It worked without problems for about one year. Then I started having problems with simple black on white printing. The cartrige was defected. I called customer service, which by the way were wery helpfull and nice and sent me another cartridge for free. Well this one was fine but the problem isn't in the cartrige. The printer started spacing out some lines on the document or cut the entire end of the document. (I have wind. XP). The scanner is very good if you want to keep the copies on your computer, but if you want to print it ...bad quality.
Sofweare that comes with the printer isn't the greatest too. The ink level sensor shows nonsense. Also if you want to stop your document before printer placed the sheet of paper under the printing head it is basically imposible without grabing it with your hand...the softweare is not responsive enough.
Black and white copy (brightness resolution) option is worthless. That is if you want make your copy darker or lighter you don't have many options. Well obviously now this printer is half the price and if you think it is worth the risk buying it do it...Also the ink doesn't soak into the paper fast enough making labels and placing them on, brushing with your hand over the letters makes them blurrrrry. Personally I thought I'd give a new make a chance but...I'm done with Lexmark products. I've owned a CANON and HP ...translating in english it means quality. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Lexmark's X125 is a compact, self-contained multifunction device for your printing, scanning, and faxing needs, and most of your copying needs as well. The scanner uses a feed-through device instead of a flat bed, so pages pass through one-by-one. You can scan them into your PC or make copies in black-and-white or color without a PC. The X125 looks much like an enlarged fax machine, and indeed provides full fax facilities, including speed dial and memory storage for up to 70 numbers.

Paper feeds from a near-vertical tray at the rear to a long pullout tray at the front. Above this is a second (clip-on) tray that catches pages as they exit the scanning mechanism. The machine uses old-style, high-capacity cartridges, which are easy to fit and clip into place.

A two-line LCD eases setup by directing you to, for example, align the machine's print heads before installing the driver software. The bundle includes photo editing and OCR software as well as facilities for faxing. These utilities install easily, but the driver isn't as user-friendly as those typically supplied with the more consumer-oriented printers, lower in Lexmark's price range.

In our tests, printed output was generally good, with sharp black text and finely detailed color prints. Resolution is high at 2,400 dpi, but we could still see fine dots in areas of variable shading. The print times, particularly for text, were low, with a five-page text document printing in just over a minute. Photo printing, at the best quality, took nearly 3 minutes.

Color copies weren't that effective, losing definition and bleaching some colors, particularly magenta tones. While they would be okay for quick copies intended for personal use, they would probably not be appropriate for giving to customers.

As a multifunction device, the X125 is functional and well-designed. It has some restrictions, most noticeably an inability to scan from books or magazines because it is sheet-fed, but still provides printing, scanning, copying, and faxing in one compact device at a good price. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk

3-0 out of 5 stars mostly fine but doesn't fax
It prints acceptably fast and the quality is good. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't have any software glitches (running Windows XP). It can make copies, I use that quite a bit: but the default is to copy in color - output for documents is much better and the speed is faster if you set it to black & white. Paper feeding is reliable and the envelope printing works well - my HP managed to print envelopes only about 50% of the time without jamming.

The ink is expensive, quite a rip-off.

I never got my unit to fax, I'm not sure what the problem is. Not critical for me, but the fax capability was one reason I bought it.

1-0 out of 5 stars print type
I am using this as a stand alone, no computer connection.I have tried to get this to print black ink all the time. I have written the help center 8 times. They don't know how to do it. I don't want red ink only on every page I copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good printer when it cooperates
The printer works well when it doesn't lock up our computer and refuse to print. We have Windows XP, and the printer and XP don't seem to like each other - often, we have to restart the computer when trying to print. We have had no issues with sending faxes but haven't tried to receive them. Copy printing works fine, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay product.
This unit is fairly acceptable, and since I did not pay much for it, i'm not too worried about what it can and can't do.

Anyways, primarily purchasing this unit in order to fax documents, I find that it faxes acceptably, but in order to receive faxes (if you don't have separate phone lines), I've found that it is not very reliable.

Also, as one reviewer stated, the Lexmark Settings Utility program does not exit quietly when shutting down Windows XP.

The "Scan" feature is OK. However, if you are looking for a scanner, I do NOT suggest the paper-feed scanners, I suggest the scanners that have the open-up top. We used to have one of those, but it broke and we had to buy a new one. This scanner has ripped a hole in two of my pictures when I scanned it. Also, it can only scan certain dimensions. For example, to scan a regular devoloped picture I had to attach the picture to a piece of paper and then insert it into the scanner. Thus, if you have small documents you'd like to scan, I suggest you just get a regular flip-top scanner. Also, sometimes when scanning a picture, I have found that the scanner does not provide an accurate color scan. Some of my pictures have been messed up badly when scanned onto the computer, and when editing them with Jasc Paint Shop they did not seem to come out any better. Even more reason to get a flip-top scanner which seems to give a better scan.

The "copy" feature is fairly well, as stated above you cannot copy documents under a certain dimension.

When printing, the printer has never jammed but some of the documents have been tilted due to the sloppy input mechanism thing.

ALSO, the ink is VERY expensive. I buy re-furbished ink and find I am still paying too much. The ink is also not that easy to replace for the first time (you have to pull out on the cartridges and when I first did it, I felt I was going to break the ink mechanism).

That's about it, I really do not recommend this printer for full use. I primarily use my HP Laserjet Printer for documents, and only use this color printer for items such as greeting cards.

I hope you found this review to be informative and helpful.
:-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid
I agree with what others say about this unit: avoid it. In fact, I bought a Canon replacement and will install it when the ink cartridges on the Lexmark go empty. Why? The printer does occasionally jam (paper feeding is sloppy, jerky), the driver/software does crash once in awhile and does not gracefully exit Windows XP when I shut down my computer, the ink cartridges are extraordinarily expensive, and the print quality is--at best--mediocre.

I didn't pay much for this thing, so I'm willing to eat my losses instead of buying more cartridges. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Super fast speed sacrificed quality
Since My cheap old printer went psych on itself and died, I went to look for new yet with much more functions. I was fascinated by this printer's function and finally gave in myself to lust on this one.
PROS
* Great speed(maximum 22page/min).... very very fast, I mean blazing speed! for this inkjet class printer. Especially black and white print does it seem to stream itself like a river.
* The software called all-in-one-center has centrally conducive interface and from initial pane, every functions are one click away and they are fabulous interface. In another word, novice friendly but geek taunting(For geeks, it would look like kindergarten's coloring book). But for me I'm very happy with this graphic dominating interface. Especially I first would have to decide what to do(either scan, print, fax, or photo print), then one or 2 more click to further specify what I want to do next. I made a mistake in resizing photo when printing border-less photo, but I quickly learned in 3rd time "drag-and-drop" picture to 4x6 size, it printed out border-less nice photo.

* Without PC function.... This is great too if you bother to turn on PC every time do anything with this printer. This printer functions as standalone scanner/faxing machine(For fax you have to turn on PC) and pushing button either color/black and white to copy. It would take some time and not function like laser fax machine, this copy things as they print out things. Button are located so that even novice can not miss what they are and they are devoid of accessory buttons thus making novice user unconfused.

CONS
* obviously certain models of Canon/Epson print much better quality pictures especially if they are photo printers. You would see some stripes smeared over pictures if looked closer, and naturally photo exclusive ink should be used for a perfect print. But if you print photo for occasionally and don't mind not-so-perfect pictures, it prints out decent pictures. For me as an unprofessional photographer, it is more than tolerable to make somebody grin their faces when giving their photos.
* They are famous or rather 'infamous' ripping you off with super-expensive cartilages, but if you look for elsewhere in EBay provided having paypal account, cheap deals could be found.
Besides, these cartilages are one of the easiest kind to refill the ink, they don't have to drilled to make a hole but they already have holes under plastic commercial label.

* Sometimes printer leaves leak of blank ink after printing border-less photo. This smudges go away in an hour or after printing few pages, but remember that they stain a black ink , a size of your thumb after photo print.

Overall, someone like me who use printer for my studies and job application, and giving away photos, this is more than decent printer.

But remember, Lexmark always suffers quality on their product meaning you don't how long they last. My old lexmark lasted almost 1 and half years, if you think it's sufficient, go for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome easy to use
this is a great printer i love it i only buy lexmark since i have had so many problems with other computers.the only down fall is the fact that that buying new ink it is cheaper to just buy new machine

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst printer ever!
For starters, the first time I went to print something on the printer I couldn't get the black to work it was straeky and faint. I called tech support and talked to someone from another country and he walked me thru a few steps and it actually made it worse! He said he would send me a new toner cartridge, but who wants to wait? I think I will be returning the "piece" to target and buying the HP I had originally set out to buy! What a waste of my time! Not to mention if the window is open, look out it might blow away! This looks as cheap as it works!

2-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs
Two stars may be too generous for this printer.First of all, EVERY time I used the printer I had to begin by performing the cartridge cleaning routine to avoid horizontal streaks.Oftne this took at least 2 tries and used up far more ink that I was using on my print job.And even worse, I happened to not use the printer for about a week when the black cartridge was about 1/3 full and the color was about 3/4 full. When I tried, the black was clogged beyond salvage.Hate to hammer it home on the brand, but I had a similar problem with a Lexmark a few years ago.I have definitely purchased my last Lexmark.<br /> <br /> I gave it two stars because when it worked, the quality was decent. So, if you print A LOT, and a lot of pages at once, it may not be so bad.But if you are an occasional printer (and by occasional I mean a few times a week even.) you will waste money on ink cartridges. ...
