5-0 out of 5 stars An Adapter vs. a Reader
With so many different gadget choices, you can never figure out which one YOU need to help upload those pics you took!
The Adapter is a PCMCI card that you plug your compactflash card into. So if you have a PCMCI slot on your computer, this is your BETTER CHOICE.
If you don't, then the reader is for you.
Both are very well priced here. Both save you batteries and time. good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CF Card For Mid-High End Cameras
I've been using my 512 meg 40X Lexar card in my Canon Digital Rebel for some time now. I have found the speed of this card is much faster in both saving and downloading images compared to a standard SanDisk card. Speed is comparable to the SanDisk UltraII card which is very similar to the Lexar 40X. The included USB cable is only for Lexar cards, but it's a really nice, compact unit. Be careful to download the Image Rescue software from the card before you erase the card (the software is on the flash card).
When taking burst mode shots (2.5 fps) the save time is easily twice as fast as a standard card. As with anything, what you are taking a picture of and the settings on the camera will affect how much data is being written, and thus how fast it is perceived by the user.
Not all cameras can take full advantage of the speed, so check with Lexar or your camera maker to make sure the camera itself can write data this fast. Even if your camera can't take full advantage of the speed, it is really nice to be able to copy images to your computer so much faster than regular flash using the jump cable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great card, but USB reader is overhyped
I bought this for my Canon Digital Rebel and Powershot S400 cameras, and it works great. If you're using an old slow card, and not a high-speed Lexar or Sandisk Ultra card, you can notice the difference in upgrading to a faster card! If you take photos in rapid succession, the write time is much faster, and maybe even battery life is longer since the camera spends less time writing. (Of course, the quality of your photos will remain exactly the same.)

However, the USB card reader that comes with this Lexar card is NOT compatible with other brands of flash cards! It works fine with the Lexar card, but DOES NOT WORK with other brands such as my Sandisk or Canon cards. Keep in mind that if you have a USB 2.0 port, and a USB 2.0 device, your photos will transmit from your camera to your computer MUCH faster. (And most digital cameras are still the older USB 1.1, so a card reader makes a huge difference in transfer time.)

3-0 out of 5 stars No improvement for the digital camera(canon A80) (-_-)
I don't notice any improvement speed for my digital camera. If you have cannon A80, this card may not be good chioce.
However, it's very nice that the card comes with both a USB reader and rescue software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as fast as I was expecting; works in S7000
I am pleased with my Lexar 40X 512MB compact flash (CF) card, especially because it works fine in my Fujifilm S7000 (that is, it doesn't drain the batteries like I've heard other CF cards do). However, I was disappointed to detect no speed improvement over my other 512MB card, a SimpleTech. (Note, this could be due to camera limitations or built-in delays.)

It's nice that the Lexar 512MB WA 40X CF card comes with both a USB reader and rescue software (it's on the CF when you get it), this makes it an even better value.

I would buy another if I needed more CF storage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for use with Canon EOS 6.3MP Digital Rebel Camera
If your camera is fast and supports high detail, you need at least the 512mb card as fast as the Lexar. I have been using this compact flash card with the Canon EOS 6.3MP Digital Rebel Camera and have had nothing but good results. Also use with the HP 7350 Photo card reader, and again, good results.

Seems like a no-brainer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!
I would just like to say thanks to all the great people who take time to write such excellent reviews. I just bought this Lexar JumpDrive based on the reviews it got, and am completely bowled over by this tiny gadget that holds so much stuff and is so easy to use. Thanks, everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars I wrote a previous review...still great but some advice...
I wrote a rave review about this product on 8 Dec 03. I continue to rate this product 5 stars even though the last 6 weeks I had problems with it. I want to share what I discovered with whoever purchases this product....I am an experienced communciations engineer. I work in the field and right now I am in Asia - its always dirty where I work. Second, my JUMPDRIVE started giving me problems and I wrote 8 messages to Lexar support asking for help/advice..I got back 1 message which was a "canned" message and did not even reference my problem. Do not count on their support group for help. I tried everything to repair it (new USB drivers, new USB hardware ports, different computers, reformats...) but the problem was intermittent sometimes it would work and sometimes not. The FINAL day before I was going to end its life with a hammer I discovered the problem. I decided to open it up and look for bad solder joints...but before I did so and as I was looking where to crack it open I realized that the "write protect switch" (which is a very small opening)had collected some dust in/on it. I moved the switch back and forth with a few times with a paper clip to clean the contacts and BINGO! It works perfect again. I have since put a single wrap of black electrical tape over the write protect switch to keep out dirt/dust. I recommend doing this depending on your environment... Nevertheless, it is a great product but very, very bad support for it....probably because it is so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Simplest Gadget I've Ever Owned
I saw someone use one of these and bought one on Amazon the same day. Now everyone that sees mine runs out to buy one! Imagine carrying something on a key change that stores the equivalent of 350+ floppy disks! I have used this to transfer all of my files to a new laptop and to copy them over to my home PC. Our color printer blew up this week, so with a deadline approaching, I put several large files on this JumpDrive and took them to a local print shop. I also had a presentation to give with several other presenters. Rather than swap out laptops during breaks and rewire them to the LCD Projector, we just stuck our oversized Powerpoint presentations on JumpDrives and plugged them into the same computer. You just stick it into the USB port of any computer and you're in business! Can you tell I love this thing?!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encrypt your files in case you lose your JumpDrive
I love this JumpDrive! It's a cinch to use and the transfer speed is excellent, once you format it for NTFS as mentioned by another reviewer.

I also used PGP to encyrpt my files in case the drive should fall into the wrong hands. You can get PGP Personal Desktop at www.pgp.com, or there are a number of other encryption programs available. I was worried about a complete stranger getting access to my financial info, but after hours of fiddling I couldn't get the Windows XP Professional encryption system to work (I copied my private key to another computer but it still wouldn't decrypt), so I went to a third-party program.

I keep all of my files, personal and business, including my Outlook personal folders (the outlook.pst file) on this drive. I have configured Outlook on all of my computers to access the outlook.pst file on the JumpDrive directly, to avoid having to copy the file back and forth, and it works seamlessly and quickly.

I work on four computers regularly so for me this solution is much better than using a laptop (I've had bad experiences with laptops!).

I highly recommend this device for yourself or as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...it is simply great!
Perfect for professional and home use - no fuss, no mess, fast, reliable and reasonably priced...simple a great item. I have attached a lanyard to it and when it is not in my pocket is it around my neck so I ALWAYS have it with me. I have used it with Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP and within 10-15 seconds it is on-line and working. I am so impressed that I am now looking for a Lexar MP3 Flash Drive so that I can liston to my Russian lessons while I travel. Also, I am now convinced that Flash Drives have matured and the Floppy disk is dead - why bother with them anymore? This is a product that works and it will just get better and better with every development. I think I would prefer that it had a metal case instead of plastic as I am a professional engineer and travel quite a bit so it does take some punishment and I fear that some file that I need while traveling will have been crushed but the plastic is fairly strong and for the price - well - it is simply great. I have no complaints. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Lexar Media's FireWire CompactFlash digital film reader makes moving files from your camera to your computer easy--just pop in a CompactFlash card and go. The FireWire connection makes connecting and disconnecting simple, as FireWire allows insertion and removal of the reader without rebooting. Its small size lets you throw the cable in your bag with your camera and connect to your PC wherever you need to.

The reader easily connects to your computer through your IEEE 1394 port and requires no external AC power. You can use your batteries for taking more pictures with your camera instead of transferring images to your computer.

The FireWire digital media reader is up to four times faster than using a USB film reader, achieving high-speed transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps. This is especially important when you are trying to download many digital-image files to your computer.

The reader supports Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards. System requirements for Windows PCs include a Pentium-compatible processor; Microsoft Windows 98 SE, 2000, or Me; and one available IEEE 1394 port (6-pin connector). Requirements for Macintosh computers are Mac OS 9.0 or later, a built-in FireWire port, Apple FireWire 2.4 or later, and a CD-ROM drive or equivalent. 5-0 out of 5 stars FAST!
Compared to my old USB card reader, this thing is very fast. Setup on Windows XP is basically unneeded. It sets itself up when you plug it into the firewire port. If you have large cards to read in, this is worth the extra money over USB to save you time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good at first but then died
This product worked fine for about a year and then died. It seems as this is a common problem. Be careful.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 never worked properly
I went through two before I gave up, the first one never worked proeprly. It transferred very slowly at first and then not at all. I RMA'd the first one and the one that replaced it worked for two uses before dying. I've since picked up a $8 usb reader that is much slower but much more reliable. I've done lots of video editing with the firewire card so I don't know what kept killing the drives. It'll take some real convincing to get me to buy another lexar product. I hate being negative, but this experience really soured me. It sounds like many have had better success than I, but be ware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does what it is supposed to do
1. Works when you plug it in (Im using a mac G4). No need to configure anything, just plug it in.
2. Downloads your photos fast. This is much faster than connecting the camera directly to the computer.

I like it. Buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A photographer in CA
Worked fine just as it was supposed to, but died on me after only 15 months. Warranty covers for 12 months - customer service would not cover beyond the warranty. I would try a different Reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for a good night's sleep
A writer's worst nightmare - computer crashing and taking books, interviewers articles etc you have that are DO OR DIE. Well, in 5 years, I have collect 7 laptops and 3 PCs. I have the huge 200G for backup, but I really need something that is easy to use from machine.

I bought the mac Lexar Media 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132 and the Lexar Media 256 MB JumpDrive Portable USB 2.0 Flash Drive. Both are very good. Please not the 256mb works on computers with 1.0 Flash Drives but at a reduced speed. My 1 1/2 Gateway only had 1.0, so that was a pain, but the rest have 2.0. They are cute see-through plastic, so the nightmare of backup and moving from computer to computer was solved - but then I envisioned the plastic melting or aliens munching on it - writers have imaginations you know!! So I saw that one. It is just as easy to us. XP people plug in and it will see it, couple clicks and you are using it. 98SE you need to install a drive.

This one is fatter than the 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132. Since I am using laptops mostly, they work fine - plenty of room for side plugs. However, if space is a concern, you might want to go with the 128 MB Jump Drive Package PD128-132. It's thinner and narrower. However, if room is not a consideration, I would recommend this one. They are near the same price. This one is much more sturdy.

This one also comes with a security section, so that is an extra added plus if you need that.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay I guess
Well, I bought this little thing to replace my zip disk (which was just a headache). And instead of bargaining online, I went to a store and bought it at a steep markup price. That aside, this thing truly is a nifty little gadget, but it's not without its drawbacks. Because of the security capability I bought this model over its skinnier competition, but this feature isn't all it's cracked up to be. The security program is pretty simple but in order to setup or access the secured part of the drive you need to install the program onto whatever machine you are using. This can be a real problem if you want to access your secured files from a public machine with security restrictions that prevent user installations. Another big drawback is its relative bulkiness, users may have trouble fitting it in USB ports next to other used ports.

On the plus side, the "PUBLIC" half of the drive (which is my entire drive now)is always available and it has seamlessly worked in every XP machine I've put it in to. XP simply detects and install it as an additional drive without any requirement from the user. (Go XP!) 98 users will have to DL the drivers and install, but this seems to be the status quo with all flash drives. Additionally, I haven't put it through much yet but it seems pretty durable.

Bottom Line: It works great and everyone should have one but I can't say I'd buy this exact model again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, bulky, and quirky
I bought my lexar jumprdrive in a store. At the time, it seemed like a real bargain. However, you do get what you pay for and this product shows it. The bulky design makes using it on traditional towers painful if not impossible. Also, the device begins to slowly die within two months. My adivce is to either buy Lexar's 256 MB jumpdrive (which has given me no problem) or another, slimmer brand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 2nd use
Echoing the other comments, I installed the software on my laptop and PC, set the public and private drives, saved some data, went on my way, and now the device is not detected on any PC, including both of my computers. It just stopped working after the second use. Lexar's tech support, online, email, and live, all fail to respond. I'm also having the same problems with the wide size of the drive. It does no good to have a private drive if you can't install the software on the PC you want to access. This is ridiculous. I'm returning it tomorrow to Circuit City.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Last Long....
I bought the Lexar Media 128MB flash drive. It was the first one that I had bought. It was really great at first; no more floppy drives, convienient storage (my keychain). I babied it pretty well, but after a month-and-a-half it died on me. I always removed it from my system properly. Im very wary of flash drives at this point... I'm going to try another brand and buy one. If my next one fails I guess I'll have to stick to my floppy drive... ... Read more
