5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I recently bought this hardrive for my Sony laptop. Although setup was a little tricky at first (took me a while to figure out that the partition size must be less than 30GB for FAT32 file type), everything else worked out as, if not better, than expected. The drive is very quiet and well designed. As long as the drive doesn't crash in the future, I would have to say I'm very pleased with it so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition for my Macintosh
The Lacie external hard drive works great with my Macintosh iBook right out of the box, with no installation or set-up necessary.

It comes with all the needed power and FireWire cables, so I just had to plug it in, and my computer immediately had another 200 gigabytes of space.

It runs quietly, its metal case does not get too warm, and saving files is as fast as on a built-in hard drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition
After a month of hunting storage for my laptop, i narrowed my choice, Maxtor or Lacie. I chose d2 for several reasons,
* Less Noisy (external drives, drives you mad!)
* Speed
* Vertical
* Transparent connectivity
* It looks cool too! :-)

I own an Inspiron 8100 and got this as external storage for my media files and back for large application, so far its going very stable and smooth. Five stars for Lacie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great External HDD for DV editors
I bought this product for my on-going video editing projects which eat up my hard disk spaces like hungry monsters. Well I had 80GB version of the same HDD over a year and it worked beautifully just not big enough for me. It does not have electric fan but it's all aluminium case works fine dealing with the heat. Although the HDD inside is not exceptionally quiet by today's standard, it is quieter than many external HDDs with electric fans. I recomand this drive for any DV editors.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent addition to laptop
I bought this hard drive simply because the hard drive
included with my fujitsu laptop just couldn't keep up.
laptop drives are slow in comparison to firewire drives.
nice design and matches well with fujitsu celsius laptop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Drive!
First off, I want to say that I have WinXP, and this drive WORKS FINE on it. Lacie is not a bad company either.
So here I go: I've had this drive for a couple months, with almost no problems whatsoever. It has saved me when my computer crashed, and yes it has an on/off switch, which is very nice. It is also very small and affordable. Aside from one time when the power wouldn't come on(it came back on after cooling down), this drive has been a lifesaver and a wonderful companion to my PC. Thanks LaCie!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
Does NOT work with most window xp systems! It works with my MAC at work, but didn't with my PCs. How dare they advertise that it works with windows! I had to go through the hassle of thinking it was damaged so I sent it to Lacie, then they sent me a new one and then it still didn't work so I had to send it back to Amazon and I lost out on tons in shipping costs and I didn't even get refunded the full amount! What a hassle. How about sending me something that works with my system next time?

1-0 out of 5 stars I would never buy a LaCie product again
I own several of these drives, but I would never buy another product from LaCie again. I ordered directly from the company. When I didn't receive notice that the drive had shipped, I emailed the company. The reply I received from the company was shocking. It was an email making fun of my name, and how funny it is when you glance at it. It was then followed by another email stating they weren't laughing at my name, but merely commenting on it. This is unprofessional and immature. LaCie has lost me as a customer forever. I ended up purchasing the Maxtor 5000 dv. The Maxtor drive works better, and is a better value. From now on I am sticking with Maxtor, they don't insult their customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Hardware
This is one of the most solid, well designed, pieces of computer hardware I have ever purchased (maybe this PC user isn't used to what Mac users have come to expect)! Heavy aluminum case - with a power switch (the main complaint in reviews of competing external drives). I compared the LaCie drive to the equivalent Western Digital, Maxtor, and Iomega units, and am completely happy with my choice. In fact, my unit contains a Western Digital drive - in a superior case! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ideal for space-hungry applications
The LaCie Big Disk is ideal for space-hungry applications, such as Apple's Final Cut Pro projects, and Pro Tools albums. Forget about network downtime; gigabytes can be exchanged in seconds simply by transferring a LaCie Big Disk from a computer to another. With such an unbelievably large capacity, the LaCie Big Disk is also ideal for large-scale backup among multiple users without causing network congestion.

Twice the size of hard drives currently on the market, the LaCie Big Disk is a unique innovation that offers hundreds of gigabytes of storage space in a portable 5.25" format.

Equipped with the FireWire interface, the LaCie Big Disk delivers fast transfer rates of up to 400Mbits/sec to accommodate high-volume environments such as digital imaging, pre-press and post-production facilities. This drive's FireWire capabilities offer unbeatable ease of use: hot-pluggability for immediate device recognition, and there is no software installation required for Windows XP and Mac OS X users. The LaCie Big Disk can also be daisy-chained to other storage devices or with most digital audio and video devices.

The LaCie Big Disk features a stylish, metallic design crafted from a sturdy aluminum alloy that dissipates heat, allowing for operation without a noisy fan. A weighted drive stand allows for upright desktop use with perfect stability, while an optional rack-mounting kit enables versatile configuration in standard 19-inch racks. The drive switches on and off together with the computer to conserve energy and provide further ease of use. For added data security, the LaCie Big Disk is also compatible with Kensington -type locks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LaCie PocketDrive U&I portable hard-drives
I am reviewing the 30Gb PocketDrive U&I - Amazon have stopped selling it for some reason - but if the 60Gb device is anything like it, it will be well worth the recommendation.

Each PocketDrive is the same physical size, regardless of disk capacity. I have used my 30Gb device interchangably with three different machines, all running Windows 2000 (two Dell desktops and a Sony VAIO laptop). I have had no problems whatsoever, even doing a lot of read/writing to it at the summit of a mountain (elevation ~13,800 ft.) Installation was trivial - plug the drive in, Windows automatically recognises it and assigns a drive letter. No drivers to manually install, no awkward setup. The only task you have to do the first time you connect it is format it - and that is easy through the Windows Computer Management console (under Windows 2000). Swapping the drive to another machine for file transfer is similarly painless. Plug it in and a few seconds later it is recognised.

The drives have USB 2.0 and Firewire (IEE1394) interfaces, both of which are extremely fast. An advantage of using FireWire is that a separate power supply (supplied) is no longer needed; just plug the drive into a six-pin FireWire port and off you go. If you need to add a FireWire card to your desktop, I recommend the Adaptec AFW-4300 1394/FireWire Card which I have used without a problem in two machines.

Although Windows prefers you to 'stop' external devices before you unplug them I have encountered no serious problems unplugging the drive 'hot', as long as it is not writing. For example, when playing MP3s stored on the drive through WinAmp, pulling the plug on the drive simply resulted in the buffer emptying out and then WinAmp looping the last few seconds of music it was playing. Nothing crashed, and plugging the drive back in followed by selecting the next song in WinAmp resumed normality.

I recommend these products unreservedly. The only thing that would make them perfect is if they could dispense with the external power supply for USB connections. All in all, however, absolutely excellent devices. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There are better solutions..
I bought a 40gB Pocketdrive a bit over a year ago. The firewire bridge, followed by the USB bridge, have repeatedly failed.

I've now had it repaired/replaced 3 times, and this 3rd one has just started doing the exact same thing with one of my pc's (stangely not the other, but on past experience that connection will eventually pack up).

I decided I could no longer do for many weeks at a time without an external drive for my portable data, so I bit the bullet and bought a Manhattan USB2 2.5" drive enclosure for $50 (UK) and a 2.5" Fujitsu 60gB hard drive for about $170(UK). It fits into the enclosure in minutes with 4 crosshead screws, looks sleek and works perfectly.

The Manhatten/Fujitsu arrangement (and I suppose any other 2.5" hard drive you care to buy) works a treat, is every bit as fast if not faster than the Lacie Pocketdrive, and as an added bonus, the drive takes its power off the USB port (its only USB2, not firewire) which the Lacie doesn't- it needs a power supply for USB. It's also smaller than the Pocketdrive - it actually fits in my shirt pocket, which the Lacie certainly doesn't. Moreover, a Lacie 40gB costs $270(UK) , and a Manhattan enclosure and Seagate 40gB 2.5" drive cost about $180 (UK). $90 saving.

Conclusion - Pocketdrive overprices and unreliable. Lacie service (UK) poor.

1-0 out of 5 stars beware: fragile
I wanted a drive to move files from work to home etc, but this isnt it. It crashed within a month. The design seems fragile. LaCie (to their credit) replaced it within a week, but I'm convinced this is really a stay at home unit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Major design flaw
I've had this drive for a year now. I've used it with all permutations of PCs & Macs and laptops & desktops and FireWire & USB. For USB on both platforms and for FireWire on PCs, you'll need the power adapter, which is a poorly designed cheap-o part--it timidly plugs into the unit. The problem is that it disconnects frequently and unpredictably from the hard drive. Unfortunately for me, it did this while I was saving an important file, which, along with a few directories, were lost forever. They seem to have corrected this issue with their new disk drives, and I recommend you avoid this still overpriced drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and reliable peerformer
Excellent Mac compatability. It is firewire powered, therefore it is truly portable. I would love to buy an 80 GB version. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Connector unreliable
Great drive-- my first USB2 disk, but it would disconnect sometimes, and sometimes this would damage open files. In the future I am going to try and avoid "mini-B" USB connectors. I think that is the problem (no fault of Lacie per se other than choosing this connector).

5-0 out of 5 stars La Cie pocket drive
This has got to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. It integrates into any NT O.S. with out a hitch and Win 98 loves it after you install the drives. I have used it for backups and as a working drive. My mates 'ave seen the drive and are hooked.

2-0 out of 5 stars Amazing sleek design. Reliable. Customer service is horrible
It's been a month and I'm still waiting for an email response. Does not respond to new operating system. Web site upgrades are for Mac 8, 9, 10.2 but not 10.2.7 or 10.3. And customer service is no help. The USB is very slow. Like floppy disk slow. USB 2 is the new rave but only 2003 computers and up have it. So if your computer is more than a year old, think of it as a large floppy disk.

By the way, the guy who wrote the review about this drive not able to be powered by the keyboards USB port and he unplugs his printer every time he uses his hard drive--have you thought about plugging your printer to your keyboard USB?

2-0 out of 5 stars Small, Portable, Slow....
This is a great drive if the portable size is what you're looking for. A few things you should know before you buy:
1. It is not meant as a primary drive--it's far too slow for that. This can only be used as a place to back up your files from your primary hard drive. If the technical language of the transfer rate doesn't make sense (it didn't to me) then consider that transfering one GB of information will take little more than half an hour. That's more than twently hours to transfer 40 GB.
2. Since the drive is advertised as hot-bootable through USB, I assumed I could just plug it into the USB slot on the keyboard of my iMac. NOT POSSIBLE! The keyboard USB slot doesn't have enough power, and you must connect the drive to the USB port on your computer, which means disconnecting your printer or whatever it is you've got plugged into it. Not quite as convenient. ... Read more
