5-0 out of 5 stars Good value, reliable operation
I'm quite happy with this KVM. It switches reliably using the front panel buttons or hot keys scrlk + scrlk + (desired port #1-8)

The only hotkey annoyance is that it won't take the port number assignment from the number pad (reliably on my wireless natural keyboard). I have to use the top row numbers. This makes hot-key switching a two-handed operation, but it's quite fast and reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value/ works well
5 stars because of the great value. Other 8 port switches are double the price.
I needed a cheap 8 port KVM switch and took a chance on this one. It works great; you can switch either by hitting a button on the switch or using a hotkey combo on the keyboard. Does not include cables. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Power-UP Problems
for laptops this needs an AC adapter that is not included. For my desktop computer I boot my computer and it doesn't recognize my mouse for WindowsXP... If I hit restart a couple times before the screen appears it then works fine. I assume this has something to do with the lack of power. It is inconvenient, but I gues it works fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well for me
I agree with the comments added, yes it does us non-standard cables, which can prove frustrating if you didn't know ahead of time. Once I found that out, I have had no problems using a wheel mouse with the switch.
I have noticed that sometimes the hot keys don't register so I have to switch by hand, but still not a major problem...even when running all four machines through it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Makes a nice KV- switch.
Purchased this with the expectation of full use of what is now standard 3-button/wheel mice (PS2). After neither an XP nor an NT4 system booted with mouse support I sent an email to Hawking Tech. Support. Their response was "We can only guarantee full compatiblity with 2 button mice. -- Hawking Technical Support (CH)"
The product is being returned... my search goes on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serves me well
I earn my living at home programming and writing about programming. I have two desktop computers and a laptop on one desk. I set up server configurations in both Linux and various flavors of Windows. I bought the 4 port switch and an extra set of cables to control this mess with one mouse, keyboard and monitor.

This setup works flawlessly. The mouse wheel works as before. Although the switch has a button to change the focus to the next system, I use the hotkey sequence because I have the switch and its cables tucked behind the monitor. The hotkey sequence works no matter what OS is booted. This includes floppy-based DOS utilities such as PartionMagic. Operation is so transparent that I sometimes forget and try to copy-paste between systems.

I would recommend this low-priced switch to anyone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars works, but some drawbacks
The basic KVM functions fine for me at resolutions up to
1280 x 1024 on windows and linux, and without a separate
power supply. However I have encountered two problems:

1. Each time I switch from one computer to the other, I have
to readjust the position of the image on my monitor. Hawking
has been unable to suggest any solution.

2. Like most computers, mine puts the monitor in low power mode
after a period of inactivity. The KVM interferes with this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Video problems galore - stay away
I have a 19" LCD Dell 1900FP monitor. I could not choose any better resolution level than 640x480! Beware, Xwindows crashed on the first load my Redhat 9 box. (despite editing the XF86Config file and choosing a generic monitor). It seems as that display output is not interpreted correctly by linux. I am assuming this unit works fine under Windows. I even tried my RH9 install CD's using the graphical installer and the text and images were off the screen. I eventually got the display, mouse and keyboard all working at 640x480. So unless you like HUGE images, stay away.

Overalll, I am not very impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Thing
I don't know why that other guy had video problems - must've been a bad unit because mine looks fine whether I'm running W2K or Linux KDE.

This switch is small enough to hide and, even though it has a 9V power port, it doesn't need it.

It even passes the gold standard of KVMs: you can boot Windows past the GUI start with the switch pointed at another machine and still have mouse and keyboard function when you switch back. Try that with a manual switch.

In summary, this is a very nice piece of equipment that beats its competitors on price hands down while not giving up anything in functionality.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor video quality
I bought this switch to replace a Linksys unit I'd been using that was having problems with the mouse connection between my desktop and my thinkpad. This (Hawking) unit solved that problem but created a new one--at the same resolution on my monitor the picture through the Hawking KVM was fuzzy. In the manual they say that this sometimes happens and you just need to lower the resolution. I tried that and it did work--but then I had a screen that looked like it was set up for someone going blind--everything was HUGE and I saw very little of a web page without scrolling. So, back it goes. I will live with the mouse problem.

If you are thinking about buying your first KVM switch for a use like mine (home user with two PC's that I want to set up for keyboard/mouse/monitor sharing) you are on the right track, but I think you'll find that these 2 port units are a little under-engineered. It's still worth it, somehow. Just don't buy this Hawking unit unless your monitor's picture is less important to you than it is to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plug in and forget
I admit it - I was tired of having to crawl behind my computers to change over the monitor cable when I needed to reboot my firewall. But KVM switches were expensive, and I'm cheap, so I put up with the hassle.
Until I saw this beauty, that is. The price was right, specially since it comes with cables. I decided to buy one and haven't looked back since.
It's very easy to use - just hook up the cables and go. No need for any special software. The cables are good quality, and I don't see any image degradation even at 1600x1200x75Hz. Switching from one machine to the other is as simple as pressing a button on the switch, or hitting Scroll-lock/Scroll-lock/Up-arrow on your keyboard (this means you can hide the KVM behind the rest of your stuff and just use the keyboard).
Before I got this I would go to great pains to not have to hook up the monitor to my firewall. Now, I just hit the keys and go!

Highly recommended. ... Read more
