4-0 out of 5 stars Super Steal!
I was researching these speakers (and comparable ones) for a while due to the price. I was about ready to buy them when, the day I was planning to, the price dropped [...] I went to [...] to pick them up, brought them home, and started plugging away. I wasn't expecting much but they sound very good and are a steal [...]. The quality of the sound is excellent, they are not Bose, but what do you expect.

One issue is the size of the inputs for the speaker wire. They do include wire for all speakers and the sub woofer (which was a nice surprise), but I doubt you can fit heavy gauged wires into them (like Monster Cables). I assume the quality of the sound can be even better than with the crap wires that are included. They have a lot of power for such small speakers, and the ability for you to rotate the 'face' can come in handy. Overall super steal!

4-0 out of 5 stars Micro done right
These are really nice speakers, with the money you save from buying Bose or Klipsh you can buy a nice center and subwoofer and have a system that will crush other mini systems. Make sure crossover settings from reciever are set to small if you are not using the subwoofer crossover. The subwoofer has very suprising output for its size, but I like much deeper bass- with my left over money I bought a huge Dahlquist sub and Wharfedale center. The manual does not state how to remove the back panels so I will post that- they turn clockwise to unlock, counterclockwise to lock. I like that the brackets are built into the speaker housing and used 3M VHB sticky tape to mount them on my walls. I am quite happy with these speakers- even better with a real sub and large center, then you can use the fifth speaker for ES rear center. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I knew how these speakers were....
I'd love to write a real review, but my order for 2 Rave CF12-400s from a month ago still hasn't come in. What's more, the speakers aren't simply backordered, but have come into stock and gone back out of stock repeatedly since the date of my order, which makes me wonder where that stock is going if it's not being shipped to me (as I have been waiting for a month). I'd appreciate if Amazon had at least communicated with me every once in a while, to keep me up-to-date on the status of my shipment, but instead I had to write customer service to get any information. Even then, the information they gave me didn't answer the questions I had asked. As of a couple of days ago, Amazon indicates that it's finally shipping me ONE of the two speakers (what I'm going to do with one, I have yet to figure out), while the second speaker's delivery estimate is not even available yet. This is by far the worst and most unprofessional experience I've had with Amazon to date.

(By the way, I didn't want to harm this speaker's ratings just because of Amazon's poor service, so my review of five stars is pending the shipment of my order, whenever that might be.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby....
I really don't have anything bad to say about it.. The 120 watt powered 10" sub sure does a good job. Everyone hates me because they can hear it from a ways away. The treble is nice and crisp as well... nice starting system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the average home
Just put this set in my rec-room and watched "Dune" on Sci-Fi channel. Loved it. Take time to adjust the subwoofer crossover frequency so that the bass works with your room's accoustics (or the sound might be muddy). I would give it a five star (for price perfomance) if the darn satelites didn't stick out from the wall so far. The fronts are OK since they are with the rest of the equipment, but for the rear they don't mount on walls very well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In defense of subs everywhere
I know this is supposed to be a review but if any of the other reviewers read this, this is for you:
Your subwoofer was only doing what it was built to do when it gave out these booming, often muddy, low tones. There is nothing wrong with your sub, what you need is an equalizer if you don't like that sound quality. You need good speakers for the higher frequency to give you the nice clear tones to complete a good overall sound, and tone down the levels on the subwoofer to eliminate that muddy sound, but keeping the bass nice and solid.
My suggestion then would be an audio reciever with an equalizer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
I have had the 15 inch 200watt sub for a while about 6months now
very impressed with it. I am using it with onkyo products and it seems to give good bass response during movies going down as low as 22hertz. The amp on back reading 335watts if that helps you. Box looks good no complaints thier sure of that. The only thing that you might not like is the neighbors complaining. Well hope this helped you out i think it is a great deal if you are looking for some serious bass.

1-0 out of 5 stars ¿¿DON'T BUY KLH¿¿
I bought this speaker about 3 months ago being a down south rap lister! Thinking it's a 15" with a 200 watt amp sounds good! Nice Price and looked nice! But not knowing KLH quailty i went ahead and bought it! ¤¤BIG MISTAKE¤¤ It didn't sound all that great for a 15" and was way to muddy in sound! After not liking this Speaker and thinking of taking it back it FRIED like chicken! DO NOT BUY THIS SPEAKER

4-0 out of 5 stars For the price it can't be beat!
Unfortunately, I was unable to purchase this item from Amazon but got a similar price from another store. Though I was impressed with the power and room shaking bass of this subwoofer, I was not impressed with the boomyness of the sound. It was fine for home theater movies but made my music CD's sound muddy and saturated. I read a review posted in an audio magazine where the owner of the ASW 15200 added some acoustic suspension to improve the sound. I purchased some from Radio Shack for less than [price] and installed it in less than 10 minutes. That was the best [money] I ever spent! Boy what a difference it made in the sound - it made a good value even better. I stapled the acoustic suspension to the top, bottom, and sides of the box. The sound is still a little boomy but the bass is tighter and more defined without sounding so overpowering. If you buy this box and aren't happy with the sound the way it is, I highly recommend the slight modification. Enjoy!

I am writing an addition to my earlier review now that it has been 8 months since I originally bought the KLH unit. I must say that I am just as satisfied today as the day I wrote my original review. The sub continues to perform well. And, contrary to what a previous reviewer wrote about equalization, which is important in your overall sound, this sub definitely needed some modification. I am also going to purchase the Audio Source unit which Amazon sells for about [price]- I can't pass up that deal for what seems to be an identical unit. It looks exactly like the KLH unit with the same size driver and power amp. If you read the reviews for it, just about all of the reviewers recommended some modifications to improve the bass response.

4-0 out of 5 stars klh 200w sub
Very good for the price. But compared with JBL 10 which is the flagship in this level,it gets 4.5 stars. It only comes 1 year warranty. JBL 5 years save you in the long run. Turn to 50% , you will get good result. Don't expect turn to 100% volume even you can. Sensitivity is not great. Maybe less than 87db. That is why it needs 200w while jbl needs 150w But it is a good entry level sub. It has on/off/auto power switch. JBL dones't(auto only) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Don't let the high costs of extravagant home-theater systems keep you from experiencing the thrill of a dynamic film right in your living room. With the KLH 9000B Home-Theater Speaker System, any Dolby Pro Logic- or Dolby Digital/DTS-equipped surround amp can fill a room with sound from sixseparate loudspeakers.

The compact system is made up of four identical two-way speakers that serve as left and right front speakers and surround satellites; a three-way, horizontally configured center-channel speaker (shielded so you can lay it atop your TV); and a ported, passive subwoofer.

The 9000B is a perfect introduction to the world of home theater. It doesn't pretend to be a high-end system, but the speakers blend well for a clear, balanced sound that we found particularly impressive with multichannelmusic software. Setup was easy and intuitive using the provided diagram and speaker wire. You won't need a subwoofer output on your amplifier or receiver, as the subwoofer gets wired in line with the front-channel speakers.

The subwoofer, in fact, brought impressive heft to the sound, given its small size and passive design. Movie playback sounded reasonably full-bodied despite the fact that five of the six speakers are quite small. The low end didn't have the definition of larger and pricier bookshelf speakers but for rounding out the sonic picture it did just fine.

The system as a whole fared well and, in fact, sounded its best during louder passages. The subwoofer comes fitted with a self-resetting circuit breaker to prevent it from damage when you play music at loud volumes.

Pros:

  • Simple setup
  • Cohesive sound
  • Plays well at loud volume

Cons:

  • Slightly muted high frequencies
  • Muddy bass

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price, even greater sound
This system is unbelievable! The sound emmitted from the 4 sats just totally threw me for a loop when I first hooked them up. I expected to get what I paid for (which was not very much) but instead, I feel like I got a $500 set of speakers. The sub was even adequate. I've owned Jensen, Sony, and Yamaha, but from now on, KLH is the way I'll go. Great job, KLH!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money
This system is great for the money. It provides a stong sense of bass despite the sub woofer being in line with the front speakers. One thing I didnt like was the weak center channel. But overall, its great for a bedroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars For this price who can complain?
For my purposes, (ie: home use without attracting the cops); this speaker system works just fine. I could complain about the way the subwoofer doesn't take a direct subwoofer line -but who cares? This is a decent product for a fraction of the competetor's prices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great speakers for the price
Fellow who used monster cable was a bit odd whereas his speakerwire would have costed a lot more than the speakers. For speakers that are $50/pair or so, they're pretty darn good. Faint praise to some extent, but really, for the money no complaints. I've had a pair for a very long time, just dusted them off and hooked them up to use'm again and thought I'd see what Amazon had to say about them. They don't come close to my ancient AR-9 speakers nor my newer Energy "5.1" speakers, but those costed way more than 50 bucks. Each. :-)

Audiophile speakers? No way. Great cheapies? You bet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat them for the price
I have an older pair of these KLH AV1001B Bookshelf Speakers hooked to a relatively inexpensive receiver. I listen mostly to jazz and classical music on them and have been very pleased with their sound quality. They have good range and a very full sound at moderate volume levels. You absolutely cannot beat them for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome sound quality, great value, but lacks a little bass.
I've had these speakers for about 6 months now and I am extremely suprised at the great sound quality from them. It does lack some in the bass. It only hits 80Htz. But they still sound great. I was using a reciever with the bass boost centered at 45 htz. How useful on speakers that won't hit that low! But I got a good pioneer that's centered at 100htz, and they sound way better. Very clear sound no matter how loud they are. Tweeter sounds good, but there is some whine in the higher bass, but for running them to the max what do you expect? I'm running 100 watts per channel through these, and they'll handle it very well, especially for the size. I did blow one of the woofers last week from having them up way too high when it went from a vocal song to a bassier song, but when taking the woofer out, I noticed it was a quality speaker with 60 watts max, vented pole piece, and a good magnet structure.

All in all I think these speakers are comparable to way more expensive speakers in everything but deep bass. But I have the KLH 10" 120 watt sub and they are a perfect match. Despite what people say about KLH I'm suprised with the quality of their products. Most of the bad reviews are due to operator error. And what do you expect from $50 bookshelfs? Deep bass to crack a window? They won't shake the walls, but use it with a sub and they'll sound awesome. Worth every penny and would happily buy another pair for whatever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the Thomas review; his problem was the receiver
The Thomas guy returned the Sony receiver and bought a JVC receiver after he discovered that was the cause of the hum. You can read it all by clicking on the "more about Thomas whatever" button.

1-0 out of 5 stars not that great
I've never owned any products by KLH but after reading the reviews here i felt confident that they would be decent. I have a new high end sony receiver and all monster cable. So that's not the problem. I set these up as rear speakers. They didn't stay up long. They emit a constant hum as soon as they're turned on. Sound quality was poor with no definition. They were so bad, i had to send them back since they detracted from my other speakers. Don't be fooled and think you can get good, quality speakers at this price. The product is actually even cheaper. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

This affordable, nondescript black box is capable of delivering an astonishingly large portion of the emotional impact of both music and movie sound. The 10-inch sub features 100 watts of clarity and stability--and you can place it just about anywhere in the room since human ears are so much less sensitive to directionality in low frequency sounds than high frequency sounds.

When used in conjunction with smaller, bookshelf-type speakers, the subwoofer extends system capability to full-range frequency response. With larger, floorstanding speakers, the sub helps shoulder the burden of reproducing low-frequency information, and its variable crossover lets you scale its output to cover only frequencies deeper than those most efficiently reproduced by your floorstanders in your room (rooms have a huge effect on audible bass response). The E-10DB offers inputs for either line- (RCA) or speaker-level (clip-type) inputs, with speaker-level outputs, too, in case you want to run speaker cables from your amplifier or surround receiver to the subwoofer, and then on to your speakers, putting the sub "inline" with 100 percent of your audio listening. Alternately, you can run a dedicated subwoofer cable from your surround receiver's subwoofer preamp output (for authentic .1 effects from 5.1- or 6.1-channel programs) or from any level-dependent analog audio output.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sub for the money
I bought this sub 4 days ago and I'm so happy that I did! This thing has very very deep bass. I watch 2 Fast 2 Furious and in the first racing secne I got chills all over I felt like I was in them cars. I had the 50w sony sub that come with my home theare system. Back then I had to have the volume up high to get decent bass in music. But how with the KLH E-10DB I can have the volume low and I get alot of deep bass. Buy it, You will love it!

Bye.

I got this bad boy and had it hooked up after a quick run to Radio Shack for the correct cable, it didn't come with any. There are 2 ways to hook it up, by itself or you can have the speakers run through it which is a plus. The sound is great...Ive gotten many complaints and its only been a few hours :) I recomend, good buy for the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Starter Speaker System
I just recently bought this 6 piece speaker system as my first entry into the world of home audio. I have a very good receiver, its the Yamaha RXV-800, so these KLH speakers are not even close to the quality needed to fully maximize a solid receiver. In any case, the bottom line with this product is "you get what you pay for." For the price, it gives you a full speaker system that can fill an averaged sized room. The quality becomes distorted at high volumes, but this is typical of speakers of this quality.

The playback is fine, and I stress that the quality is decent for the amount of money. Again, this system should be a starter kit, with more money poured into speakers as one can afford to do so. Speakers are by far, the main component of quality sound when it comes to home audio. The subwoofer is actually a plus for the system, since the small satellite speakers need quite of bit of power to get them loud. I usually need to crank the receiver fairly high in order to get the full surround sound feel in my room.

On the whole, I would recommend this for a starter or temporary system, however definitely spend the extra cash to get a better system if you can. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The KLH 1230-SBs are exceptionally affordable three-way floor-standing speakers. They are capable of filling even large rooms with their full, rich sound, and they have good bass wallop.

Like most modestly priced speakers, the 1230-SBs are not particularly sexy to look at--they have a generic black-ash vinyl veneer and black grille cloth. Their connectors are of the simple spring-loaded variety, which only accept bare or tinned speaker wire.

However, the beauty of these speakers is more than skin deep. We were impressed, for example, by their driver complement. Not only is each driver of very good quality, but KLH has done an excellent job of integrating their sound. The 1230-SBs have the kind of tonal integration we hope for but don't always find in moderately priced models. This type of coherence makes these speakers easy to listen to for extended periods of time.

In our tests, high-frequency response was extended and airy, and the sound of cymbals, which can easily get tizzy (especially in inexpensive speakers), sounded natural. The midrange area, the most important frequency range in audio, was likewise very good. Typical instruments in the midrange, such as vocals, piano, sax, and cello, were all well-defined, harmonically rich, and open sounding. And the 12-inch woofer not only packs a punch, but it has good definition, too.

If you're looking for all-around good speakers that are well-made, sound good, and don't need a lot of power to make them sing, the KLH 1230-SBs are an excellent choice.

Pros:

  • Big, full sound
  • Very good drivers
  • Easy to drive

Cons:

  • Plain looks
  • Cheap connectors

3-0 out of 5 stars Isn't it what's inside that counts?
I own a 15" KLH Loudspeaker, I made the purchase a long time ago before I knew much about audio, (whooo, 15", 300W, and a Liquid cooled tweeter to boot what could be cooler?)

Hmm, lets open it up and take a look

The magnet assymbley on the 15" woofer is smaller then the magnet on my 6.5" Midwoofer in my car stereo, wires going to the speakers must be 24ga. (extremely thin) the cross-over also looks pitiful, but hey, for that price what can you expect? At least the box is pretty beefy ;)

Screachy high's dull mid's sloppy bass w/absolutly no punch...

I plan to Replace these speakers with Cerwin-Vega's AL-750 or AL-1000 but cannot find a dealer!

Ok, mabye I'm being a little harsh, the last review on this page is very acurate...

5-0 out of 5 stars underestimated speakers
I held off buying these speakers because of some of the nasty reviews. Well the reviewer that said they were a piece of junk is wrong. I have an enormous loft studio and I needed a pair of speakers with enough quality and range to allow me entire days of listening to complex and beautiful music. I bought these and am grateful. Not only are they a physical presence, they are gentle giants. The bass is clear the highs sweet and they love classical music as much as I do. I can enjoy my music for hours on end without the headache even more expensive speakers give me , but then I don't need to wake the dead or impress audiophiles. If you want an great pair of speakers for the sane but low price of this pair. go for it I'm sorry I waited so long Happy 50 year old music lover

5-0 out of 5 stars KLH Floor Speakers ROCKS...
These speakers rocks! Price is very reasonable, you can afford it and instead of tiny speakers with woofer, I like these FLOOR STANDING SPEAKERS BETTER, CAUSE I like to feel the vibe!

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect... not quite but damn close
I bought these speakers a while ago (few months) to replace the old speakers I had (One's my parents had when they were in college, it had a hudge 8 inch driver. I was amazed at the power they had even though it was hooked up to a tiny 100 watt amp. I have scence upgraded to my father's old AMPZILLIA. Even when I crank these things up to their max 170 watts they stay clean (and they have a buffer of at least 30 watts). I only had one problem with them. I wanted more bass. I bought a small 8 inch sub and they work perfect together. I have found that these speakers sound best when you have at least 120watts going through them. Anything less you can still hear yourself think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full Range Sound... almost..
I've had these speakers for several months, and broke them in with a combination of different types of music. As far as sound, they produce a very full range sound. Although, the sound lacks in a couple areas, of the high frequency, and more so in the mid-range. My solution was to wire them in parallel, with a pair of Polk R10s, which took care of most of the issues.

The whole setup is run by a Kenwood receiver, which with the speakers wired in parallel, provides 200Watts per channel, at 4 Ohms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
My Klh system just arrived yesterday, and i pluged up ang it goin in 30min. I had a feeling that these speakers were junk because of the price, but i was surprised to hear these speakers where crisp and clear when i connected them to my DVD player they sounded awsome. The passive sub gave a lot of bass and the whole system gave me the full effet. Sadly but true these speakers are bettter then my BOSE. They are great sounding speakers, and i highly recomend them. They sound great in a small room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
I just got this home system via ups today and hooked it up in 30 min. I put in a DVD movie and put on the surround sound and was almost blown off my seat. The sound was so crisp and was so clear. I highly recomend this system. The passive subwoofer made the sound sound awsome. When I saw the price for the system I thought that the system was garbage, but it is awsome. I highly recomend it! Great sound for the price, sadly but true it is better then my bose system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Surround Sound for those on a budget!
I own a set of very powerful Cambridge Soundworks speakers, hooked up to my DVD player they sound awesome. However they are always in need of repairs, and I was expecting the overall price to be what I paid $1200 for the set. But now I've just about doubled that from repairs. While these speakers aren't as reliable they do sound better then alot of surround sound speakers and these have yet to need repairs, when they are acctually placed in a worse area. So if you need good speakers cheap, these are them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Audio System!
This is my first pair of KLH Speakers. I'm very excited they sound great! To be such little speakers they really kick. Rich sound and not too much bass. I like the high gloss black finsih as well, it's a change. Next I'm going to order a KLH Subwoofer and another pair of bigger KLH speakers to go with that. Highly recommended. Take a chance, you won't be sorry. Snapping my fingers in New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revelation
This is a copy of my review for this speaker's twin - the 18T with a maple finish:

Let me begin by admitting that I cannot be considered an expert in the field of evaluating speakers. However, I have been a pretty avid stereophile for almost 20 years, and am something of an equipment snob. My tastes, however, run to what some of my friends would disdainfully call "mid-fi." In lieu of esoterica such as 20 watt monoblock tube amps, I believe in solid, no-frills equipment from companies such as NAD, Denon, Harman Kardon, and Nakamichi: equipment that gives solid performance at a fair price, eschewing silly frills for quality construction, design, and materials. When it comes to speakers, I believe the decision as to what to buy is very subjective, and a function of some basic cost trade-offs. That said, I have always been a firm believer in a well-designed two-way speaker - all of my main speakers, from EPI T/E 100s, to the Energy ESM-2s I just replaced, have been two-way speakers with 8-inch woofers. The KLH Model 18T is, I believe, the best of the bunch.

I just recently had to replace my faithful Energy speakers when the foam woofer surrounds completely disintegrated after 15 years. I have had my heart set on purchasing a pair of Magnepans (perhaps the MMGs) for some time, but with two small and very curious children, this seemed quite foolish. I don't think those nice flat panels would last a day without having multiple holes punched in them. Another concern: it's Christmastime and I have two small children, so spending what I once thought of as a reasonable sum to satisfy my stereo-lust seemed rather Scroogelike. So I needed something solid, inexpensive, and relatively impervious to children. And they had to sound wonderful. Unable to do a decent job of speaker auditioning, I took the plunge and did a little web-research, settling on a pair of KLH Model 18Ts. And I was well rewarded.

Now, KLH is a brand that I have never considered before. If you're going to go esoteric, speakers are the place to start. And KLHs are about as plainjane and lowbrow as they come. But as I read in various testimonials, these top of the line KLHs should not be lumped with their more humble siblings. The materials and construction appear generally to be of high quality, from the gold plated binding posts to the yellow woven fiberglass woofers. And added bonus, they look good, at least to me. They are about 40" tall, just about right for listening in your favorite easy chair. The finish on my speakers is a nice high gloss maple (they are also available in black and various other finishes), although the gloss looks perhaps a bit too plasticky. You can see the gold colored polycarbonate tweeters and yellow woofers through the metal screens, for a nice high-tech touch. The plastic grill casing, however, seem a little flimsy, and the veneer is a little warped along some of the edges. I would not notice this, I think, in a less glossy finish, and it is a relatively minor quibble.

Now, let's get to the meat. How do they sound? They sound good. Very good, indeed. And they seem much more efficient than the sensitivity rating of 86 dB @ 1W - 1M would suggest. My Energy speakers were rated the same and required a lot more of my Harmon Kardon amplifier. The soundstage and accuracy of these speakers is every bit as good as my old speakers, which cost $100 more in 1985 dollars. And they seem to have what I consider great "presence." My Steely Dan CD, which I consider a great test of a speaker's abilities, sounded fresh and alive. I could hear things on "Deacon Blues" I never noticed bedfore. And the bass is tight and deep. The drums on the CD had that quality of "attack" and immediacy that my other speakers could never match: It seems as if the drums are live, as opposed to a muffled recording. These KLHs certainly add back the punch to percussion that I had not even know I was missing. I don't believe in subwoofers in general, although I accept their justification with satellite speakers. A subwoofer is certainly not needed with these speakers. Their (unqualified) rating of 30-20,000Hz seems reasonable. They also did a fine job with (modern) classical music. The low, rumbling menace of Gorecki's Third Symphony was given new life by these speakers. They did just as well with Dawn Upshaw's haunting voice.

It is really hard to do a true evaluation of a speaker without being able to compare it head to head with another model. I would not be surprised if once could find similarly priced speakers that were more accurate, or more smooth. I would not be surprised if one could find better, tighter bass, if that's what you are into (personally, I prefer a good tight mini-speaker with no bass to a sloppy one with a 15" woofer). Pick any particular aspect of a speaker that you might be interested in and no doubt you could find something in the same price range that would beat this speaker. But I have not auditioned any speaker that for the money performs so well in so many ways as these KLHs. They are incredibly versatile, and at their price, you cannot really go wrong.

If price were no object, I would give these 4 stars over all. But given all that these speakers deliver for their price they deserve 5 stars. If you're desperate like I was, order them online, and if you don't think they are worth every penny, send them back and eat the postage. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

KLH is sure to charm with its HTA-9005 home-theater system, a nifty little five-piece speaker set. Its four satellites and center channel speaker are attractive and easy to place, and its sound is remarkably good.

Four identical two-way satellite speakers (front and rear left/right) compose the heart of the HTA-9005. Each satellite houses a four-inch woofer and 0.625-inch piezo-poly tweeter. The system's center channel employs an identical driver complement, but its tweeter sits in the speaker's center, flanked by not one but two woofers. Using identical, timbre-matched drivers is one of the keys to good surround sound--kudos to KLH for adhering to this design principle.

Articulate and well-balanced vocal reproduction is another element essential to sound reproduction for both music and movies, and this, too, is one of the HTA-9005's strengths. With stereo CDs and DVD-based movies, the midrange is clear and inherently natural. This system is not as detailed as more expensive rigs, and it does exhibit a hint of boxiness, but these are minor flaws for equipment in this price range.

In the surround mode, the center channel rivets dialogue to the screen, and front left-to-right pans (passing cars, helicopters, and the like) exhibit the seamless tonal quality we expect. The satellites do a fine job of opening up a well-defined, three-dimensional soundscape.

The HTA-9005 does not come with a subwoofer, and you will want to add one if you expect any bass response below 50 Hz--this is especially true if you like blockbuster action movies or music with a strong beat.

We enjoy both music and movies and think speakers should be suitable for both. For a surprisingly low cost, KLH's HTA-9005 delivers the goods. --Wayne Garcia

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Bang For The Buck
I'm finally getting into the Home Theater experience and I can tell you these speakers can handle the output from my Sony STRDE 945 receiver with no problem. I don't know how load you like to play your sound tracks but I can tell you my dogs were freak out enough to leave the living room. You must add the KLH 100 watts 8 ½" subwoofer to complete the setup. It can be had for under ($) if you shop around. One setback is the sound reproduced when using 2-channel stereo. It's a little on the thin side. They are identical in design, which is important in home theater sound, and you can't beat the great price. KLH doesn't spend a lot on advertising so don't think these are cheap junk. They come with plenty of cheap (22 gauge) speaker wire though. Amazon sells the Acoustic Research HT604 Home Theater Hookup for ($), which I bought and can recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darn good, for the price
While these speakers may not sound as nice as some other, more expensive speakers like Energy or Polk Audio, for the price, they simply cannot be beat. Sure, the imaging isn't the best, and I'd prefer them to be a bit brighter, but for Home Theater use they're excellent. I've found that for music listening, they are decent, but you'd be much better off to replace the fronts with something better, if music was a concern. Otherwise, just throw in a decent sub, and you've got a cheap but good system. (Assuming you have the reciever, DVD player and all that... :)

Overall, despite a few little (And I do mean little) problems, these are excellent. And you can't expect perfection for $70. And getting 5 nice speakers for that price, well, it just shouldn't be passed up! Get em while they're still here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good - but get a subwoofer
Like many of the other reviewers, I bought these to get an inexpensive start to my home theater system. For the money they are entirely adequate for both movies and music. Note however, that I have them placed in a small family room and do not play at abusive volumes so I haven't really tested their limits. One thing you'll notice immediately is the weak bass response. I went out within a week and got a powered subwoofer (8 inch 100 watt Yamaha)so now I'm completely satisfied with the setup.

I also took the advice from other reviewers and replaced the cheap wire that was included with 16 gauge speaker wire.

For smaller rooms and reasonable listening volumes you really can't go wrong with these.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a steal!
Like everyone has said, they are great for the price, but you do need a sub to make up for the high cut off in the frequency response. I plan on buying some higher quality speakers in 5 years or so, but for now, these suit me just fine. I'm considering buying another set of them to have music through out my house instead of just in the family room...

5-0 out of 5 stars The cheapest thing I could find and it works just fine.
This was the cheapest thing I could find ANYWHERE, and the only thing I was worried about was wheather it worked. It does, and the sound quality is perfectly acceptable. ... Read more
