4-0 out of 5 stars Great Entry-level System
I bought these speakers as part of my first full surround audio system. In addition to the speakers and subwoofer shown in the image, the package includes a set of 5 thin little 22-gauge speaker cables, a 6-foot subwoofer cable, and 4 simple metal brackets so you can attach the satellites to your walls. Naturally, you'll need a 5.1 capable receiver to get full surround sound. Mine are currently hooked into a Yamaha HTR-5550.

The sound is excellent; nice and clear, with plenty of power. Lots of quality bang for the buck. The bad news is minor: At a measly 50 watts, the subwoofer is adequate at max volume, but folks looking for the massive bass booms should upgrade this. The subwoofer can double as a stereo amplifier, but given that 50-watt rating, I really don't know why anyone would want to. I'd also suggest tossing the freebie 22-gauge cables in favor of some thicker 16-gauge from the local electronics shop. It's a cheap upgrade, and the quality difference is significant.

Bottom line, even with shipping costs and upgraded cables, these were still a superior deal to anything I could find locally. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good speakers, Great price
I recently purchased these speakers because my old ones died. I was looking for a good home theater system at a low price. These exceeded my expectations.

I have noticed a few people complaining about the sub. When I first hooked mine up with the pre-amp output on my receiver via the provided coaxial cable it had almost no sound. I then used a better cable, but got the same results. So I hooked it up through the front speaker outputs and then out came the bass. I don't know if this is because of my receiver or because of the sub. All I know is it fixed the problem. So you may want to try both installation techniques to see what works best with your system.

The speakers sound very good. The sub puts out substantial bass. A 6 speaker system at a very good price makes it difficult to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great sound and more bass than I need
The sound is very nice and I have to keep the subwoofer turned down in order to avoid having it overpower things. I'm not sure why some others are having trouble getting good bass. I purchased the pricy Monster brand subwoofer cable and thicker wires for the satellites too. My advise is to try a better cable and make sure your reciever is set up properly (so that the satellites are on SMALL and the subwoofer is on LARGE, etc).

I'll replace these some day, but for now they are doing great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value, Very Good Sound
I have a Harmon Kardon AVR125 Receiver with Sony EQ and JVC DVD player matched with a pair of old ADS Tower Digital Speakers. I live in a relatively small apartment with fairly good acoustics. Recently, I have been looking for some satellite speakers as well as a decent center channel to finish the theatre concept. One of my basic factors was digital (preferably DTS) compatibility. My floor speakers are tremendous so I needed something that would compliment with out breaking the bank.

THESE SPEAKERS DO THE TRICK! Complete with four wall brackets and speaker wire, this is a complete program. The sound is crisp and full, producing Theater quality sound that is especially impressive for viewing DTS movies, sports from cable TV, and even PS2 games. Musically, I tweak the system a bit differently, but once set, the 'live' performances are a trip!

The subwoofer is the weakest link with this system, however, I feel an investment in better cables (Monster) would correct this, besides my floor speakers provide more than enough bass for both me and my neighbors needs. Therefore the subwoofer is of little concern to me.

I looked at the Bose satellite system and came away disappointed and discouraged by the price. Hence, to find these speakers with this high quality for this price $80 + $33 Shipping. This is a good system at twice the price, no kidding. These are perfect apartment speakers and are an especially great upgrade for a home theater system.

BTW, I used the extra speakers to hook up my bedroom! Chicks dig the ambience. 'Nuf said.

4-0 out of 5 stars great buy
Based on value alone...5 stars!
Great system to add surround to your system. I like the fact that the satelite speakers are the same as the front. Often the satelites are cheap and lightweight. These seem to be good build quality all around.

You cant even buy a powered sub alone for the price of this system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars KLH= good stuff cheap.
I Just got this system a month or two ago, and I'm happy with it. The speakers are quite outstanding actually. I have everything run through a Sony Receiver (the one that I've already reviewed) along with some vintage Yamaha center speakers, and the setup sounds quite nice so far. As everyone has already mentioned regarding KLH sound systems, the speakers are amazing, and the subwoofers lack bass. Then again, you do save a great deal of money on the sattellite system, so throw it towards a decent sub. The speakers come with everything required for mounting, except decent wall screws. Also, the included speaker wire is absolutely dreadful, I'd recommend getting your own separately.

This system is perfect for an apartment where you have to worry about neighbors above and below complaining about constant wall thumping. I've had no complaints thus far. I don't mean to sell the sub short, it is nice for the price, and doesn't seem like its going to blowout any time soon. Again, if you want to shake the paintings off your neighbors walls, you might want to try something else. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price.....
I bought these speakers to use on our deck and also to point out at our pool. I am amazed at the sound quality for such a small box. If you are looking for an inexpensive set of speakers to place outdoors then these are a perfect fit. I am going to order a second pair in order to increase my coverage area.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Deal!
I bought these speakers for less than $20 and am very impressed with their quality. I put them on our patio and the entire area is filled with great sound (the patio is about 15'x30'). If you are looking for an inexpensive set of speakers for outside, this is your pair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great All-Around Speakers
I bought a pair of 970A's about six months ago for use on my deck. Weather has never been a factor, as these speakers still look and perform as brand new. I was so impressed with the sound quality from such a compact package that I bought another pair to use as rear channel speakers in my surround system. The speakers have performed extremely well, and I have since purchased a third pair to wire sound to my garage. These speakers are an excellent buy - no other manufacturer offers such quality sound and workmanship in such a compact, inexpensive unit. KLH will definitely get more of my business.

4-0 out of 5 stars best buy has them for cheaper
Best Buy is now selling these speakers for 11.99

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Rear Surround Applications
I can't imagine someone using these little creatures as primary front speakers, but for rear surround speakers they are a perfect fit. Additionally, you can't beat the price. The mounting hardward is very spartan but it gets the job done. A perfect fit for an entry level surround sound system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

With vivid picture quality and full-bodied surround sound, KLH's DVZ-2500 is a great starter set for home theater enthusiasts. The system consists of a full-featured DVD player-surround receiver, five compact satellite speakers with 3-inch drivers, and an 8-inch powered subwoofer. The satellites are powered by 25 watts each, and the subwoofer kicks out 50 watts for strong, deep bass.

The system offers Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio decoding, so you can enjoy the full, immersive effects of discrete multichannel surround sound. Optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs are available in case you want to hook the DVD player up with a CD recorder or other component, and composite-video and S-video outputs relay about 500 lines of high-resolution video to your television. While the above outputs are great, it's good to know that the DVZ-2500 does not have any inputs, so you can't hook other components to it. A convenient FM-AM tuner offers 20 station presets.

The DVD player offers compatibility with standard disc formats, including DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, DVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, HDCD, and MP3 CD. Ten-bit video decoding and 96 kHz/24-bit audio decoding ensures quality entertainment, and the system is compatible with PAL as well as NTSC playback (in case you want to watch non-region-encoded discs from Europe and Australia). Parental lock keeps kids from watching discs intended for adults. The satellite speaker dimensions are 5.25 inches high by 3.75 inches deep by 3.5 inches wide; the subwoofer measures 11.4 inches high by 11.4 inches deep by 12.4 inches wide. The system includes a remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can NOT beat this value!
While I do agree with volume 1 being a little loud for an apartment, everything else about this system rocks.

After spending another $... to upgrade the speaker wire and RCA analog signal wires, this system is clean. The signals are discrete and in a smaller room, really sounds big. There is center and rear surround delays which also help as the processor isn't the best.

The system came with mounting hooks to hang the speakers. The powered sub has an auto-off feature which is great as I have it hidden in a closet. This little 50 watt sub is using the whole closet as it's enclosure now :) and last night watching the Patriot, the bed was shaking from cannon blasts on volume 3!!

Bottom line, the system is worth twice as much as it sells for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Value City Baby
At first I was purchasing this HTIB as an inexpensive unit for a spare bedrooom. Once I had the unit hooked to the televsion, tweaked the placement of the speakers and listened to a few music videos, I realized that it sounded much better than my $400.00 unit that is hooked up to my television in the living room.

The bottom line......Great sounding unit for the money...Oh Yes...It also is a DVD player as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy fix
Like everyone else I bought this KLH system at a discount price of 75 bucks + 40$ in shipping. When I first got it I was upset by the fact that it "Too Loud" as others have mentioned. However, I have found a quick and easy fix for this - Blow out the speakers! Just Kidding. I really wanted this system to watch every day TV because I do not rent videos from the store. I purchase them "ON DEMAND". It took me a little while to figure out but I have a great setting that you all can use for your Television:
-Plug the Center speaker and the BASE BOOM BOX from the main speaker chamber to the Audio "Out-puts" from you TV.
-Then plug the left and right speakers from the main speaker chamber to you CABLE AUDIO "Output" on all your cable boxes. This produces a MASSIVE sound that can be controlled with your TV and Cable Volume controls rather than the messed up Volume controls on the KLH DVD system. Buy movies from Paperview! If you do use the DVD only keep the extra two "back" speakers plugged in it as it won't be as loud. The speaker system and Bass tubes are magnificent for 75 bucks when connected to the Cable and TV, who cares about the DVD. CNN, ESPN, and Sunday football games are MASSIVE with the sound.

Now go hook it up!

1-0 out of 5 stars Awefully Loud...for cds and dvds
Stay away from this one. the volume is only adjustable to audible level when on radio mode. Like the rest, I found the volume "one" for cd and dvd is extremely loud. I live in an apartment in New York. At level one, it woke up the whole neighborhood. Don't even waste 10 bucks for this home theater system. It is not worth the hard-earned dollars. I am very disappointed, but to send it back might cost me almost the same price of the unit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for price $70+$30 S&H
I read alot of the recent reviews before purchasing this system. I wasn't going to buy it because of the volume problem (too loud) but some people said that this could be lowered in the 'audio properties > dynamics' setting.

Sure enough, there is a setting, but it does NOT lower the volume level at all.

So, I rang the toll free 888 number and this audio level problem is a defect. However, the dynamic setting is purely to make some sounds softer, not to lower volume. I was told to get a replacement. The replacement is the exact same way ... defective.

Buy this system if you only want to hear _DVDs_ with all speakers, because there are no inputs. And the radio, CD is at best stereo,
AND
if you don't mind the fact that it will be too loud, if at any stage you want a normal listening level.

I gave 2 stars because I was able to watch a DVD ok with volume level one.

And the OPTICAL output doesn't seem to work.
Anyone else have this problem? ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Weatherproof speakers are a must if you want to enjoy music outdoors, on a boat, or even in a steamy bathroom. The venerable American firm of KLH (which has been building speakers since 1957) produces one of the best models of indoor-outdoor speakers we know of, the SS-02s.

The SS-02s are very compact, making them easy to place just about anywhere. Their black finish and slightly curved facade are quite attractive, and they even come packed with mounting brackets, screws, and speaker wires. And, unlike far too many designs, the SS-02s come with real five-way, gold-plated binding posts, not the cheap push terminals. The included wires, however, are very thin. The use of thicker speaker cable markedly improves the speakers' sound quality, especially with the long cable runs required for most outdoor setups.

We sampled the SS-02s in our main listening room as well as in a steamy bathroom. To our delight, they produce a balanced, crystalline midrange and were especially good with vocals. High frequencies sound both clear and extended. But, as you might expect from a pair of 4-inch woofers, the bass--while responsive and clean--isn't very extended or deep. On the other hand, the SS-02s play loudly, which is important for a speaker that will do duty in the great outdoors.

KLH's SS-02s offer good sound for a small speaker at an excellent price. That in itself makes them easy to recommend. The fact that you can enjoy them indoors or out, come rain or shine, makes them that much more desirable. --Wayne Garcia

5-0 out of 5 stars super value!
i've owned much more expensive speakers. as much as 800.00 a pair. i wanted to upgrade from my infinity's. i thought they were to uninvolving. i went to my local hi fi dealer, and listened with an open mind. they had a few pairs of klh speakers, which surprised me. i told the salesman i wanted to hear every narrow tower.
when i realized which speaker i picked as my favorite, i was amazed. i listened again and again. finally i took these home over some much more costly speakers. listen for yourself. awesome value!!!!! Very natural sounding

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Speakers for music and home theater system
I bought these a month ago and hooked it up to my ... amp. They sounded really good the bass was high for music, but For home theater you might need a sub-woofer to pump up the low bass. I have listened to many speakers but could not tell the difference between these and the ones that cost [$$$]a pair. I also have [another set] at home, but these sound as good or even better. I will recommend this to anyone for the sound quality, style and price. ... Read more

I think this product is made to work just for six month.....

1-0 out of 5 stars WORRSTT
This is a horrible product , stay away from it.

Its a shame they are still in market!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk!!!
I have had the KLH HA7000 for just about a year. I was in the Middle of watching a DVD when the screen froze. I had to take the system apart to get the DVD out and now it won't work at all. I turn it on and it says Welcome. None of the other functions work, so now I am stuck with an almost $200 piece of Junk! Do not buy this product, it is a piece of crap. I wish I had read other reviews before buying because the general consensus is, Crap.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst product review possible
After saving for our dream DVD Home Theater we bought the KLH 7000H from BestBuy™. The machine just froze up and could not even be used to control the other auxiliary inputs like cable tv or vcr.

Occasionaly prior to the complete failure the sound would crackle.

What make this DVD Home Theater a nightmare is that neither the toll free number nor the email address included or the Internet at large have been able to connect us to the manufacturer to resolve the problem.

For near $200 I didn't expect the best of products, but I expected to get more than 11 months of service from the thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Time for surgery
I purchased one of these at Best Buy in March 2003. It has been acting up at power on for several weeks now, and now won't even get past the welcome screen. I have noticed that the power LED doesn't come on, and the TV splash screen doesn't come on either. I used to be able to power down and then back on, and that usually worked. Today it refused to do so. I will have to agree with the other reviewers in that this unit is garbage. For all of the electronic user interface designers out there, this could be the quintessential example of what not to do. I give KLH an F for user friendliness. This being my first home theater purchase, I now have a good idea of what to look for as far as features and usability. At least the speakers sound decent and are still in good shape.

Now on to the exploratory surgery. Have soldering iron, will travel. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great computer speakers
I have a set of Cambridge Soundworks Microworks speakers, and they sound excellent at medium volume, but the subwoofer is pathetic. At low volume, the cubes lack clarity. So, I replaced them with Yamaha computer speakers. The Yamahas sound great at low volume (which is how I use them). However, they lack any sort of bass for music or gaming. Therefore, I bought the KLH to add some bottom end. They have deeper bass than the Microworks, but they distort on certain music, even at low volume. Overall, they are acceptable as computer speakers.

If you are thinking of using these speakers for your hi fi, or home theater, then you are in for a disappointment. A very big one. When the volume is turned up, the speakers crack, and pop, even when the volume is less than halfway up. The bass is not particularly deep for DVD soundtracks. It probably goes down to 50 or 60 hz. I have a Yamaha subwoofer for my DVDs, and they sound much cleaner, deeper, and louder. You'll be wasting your money with these.

Overall, KLH sells cheap stuff, and the quality is reflected in the price. However, if you just want a sub to enhance video games, and you don't turn up the volume, then this is a nice option.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little subwoofer @ a great price.
We bought this subwoofer (KLH ASW100) from Sam's Club for under $69.00 and after a little adjusting to match our system and our ears we have it performing quite well on our surround sound system connected to our satellite television system. It adds a great deal of enjoynment to both the television programs as well as our video tapes. We are really enjoying this item and feel that it was a great deal as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy this Sub
The KLH ASW8-100 is a thouroughly dissappointing specimen. My experience with other KLH products prompted me to order this thing from Amazon. Amazon is getting it back. I considered keeping it for one of my computers. But I cannot justify keeping this when for only 30 bucks more I can get another ASW10-120. Spend the extra ($). Avoid the 8", prone-to-pop, inaccurate, bland, unimpressive ASW8-100. Also, Its amp is rated at 100 watts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Small Speaker!
These two-way bookshelf speakers with 5.25 inch polypropylene cone woofers, 5/8 inch polycarbonate tweeters, and first order high pass crossovers, are perfect for the compact stereo system in a dorm, office, or small apartment.

First, a few specifications. Output is an impressive 86 dB at one watt at one meter (three feet). Frequency response is 80Hz to 20kHz. The power input rating is 5 to 100 watts. Impedance is 8 ohms. Magnetically shielded. Dimensions are 10 inches tall x 6.5 inches wide x 5.5 deep (including grill). Finally, the black cloth grills are removable, the wiring terminals are the quick connect type, and there is a metal clip on the back to hang them on the wall (if desired).

A small stereo will drive these speakers very nicely. I used these to replace the speakers that came with my 16-watt JVC FS-SD5 compact stereo and it now sounds loud enough to potentially disturb the neighbors in the apartment next door (with no distortion at even the highest volume levels). These speakers also have deeper bass then some of the compact sub-woofers I've tried (I could feel the bass in the floor).

Finally, these speakers are attractive. The fronts, backs, tops, and bottoms are finished in black textured vinyl and the vinyl sides have a woodgrain pattern with a slightly reddish tint (Applewood).

I highly recommend these for anyone looking for a nice, quality sounding, small speaker. ... Read more
