5-0 out of 5 stars Traded in My 17" CRT
First of all, I can't believe I concur with the magazine reviews, as I usually find the user reviews on Amazon and other places to be more helpful. I thought I wanted a 17" LCD but wanted to look at them in person. It's sad, but Gateway is the only store in NY where you can actually try out the monitors using real computers, software and mice. Anyhow, my visit to Gateway talked me out a larger monitor (they have 15" and 18"). The larger one was "huge." And you are told these things look better at maximum pixels so the big one was set for 1280 x 1024. The little tiny icons on that big screen were hilarious. I tried a game of free cell and the cards were so tiny and spread out, it was weird. The bar on top on the AOL screen was also almost too small to see. I felt like I was at the movies. The 15" was much more user friendly and seemed sharper. I finally ordered a 15" but a KDS, based on reviews and price. I love it! It's clear and sharp. The 15" screen seems hardly smaller than my 17" Dell CRT. Nothing fuzzy about this screen. It's also very slim and good looking (okay, it's not Heather Locklear, but you get the idea). It does come with an annoying sticker across the top that took me 20 minutes to remove with a glue-remover (but be careful what you use on the actual screen...read the instructions before cleaning). This one is a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great encore.
I bought my first KDS 2 years ago and a second one a few months later. Overall I had been quite pleased with the performance. However, when one of them stopped working a few months ago, I figured it was new monitor time. I called KDS and told them I hadn't registered the monitor at the time of purchase. They asked me for the serial number and within 1 minute informed me that they would be glad to replace it for free, as the date of manufacture was less than 3 years old. In a week, I had a brand new monitor! Last month, I returned the favor by buying a few of the new KDS-15 S-3Fs for the office. They are even nicer than the first generation I bought. Three cheers for good products with great customer service!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good while they work
I bought my AV-195TF originally in Nov 2000 only to have it replaced in Feb 2001 after it got to the point that it was very blurry and not correctable even with tech support. Now that one has gone bad. (almost a year to the day I replaced my 1st one) It keeps popping and refreshing itself and then BANG a loud snap from inside it's case and now the entire center is one big blur!! KDS does have a GREAT support system though HOWEVER They do NOT have anymore AV-195TF's as Sony quit sending them Trinitron® CRT's. They are even out of refurb's of this unit and are replacing them with NON-TrueFlat 21" monitors.
My replacement will be the VS-21e so I will write a review on it after I receive it and try it out for awhile. The KDS AV-195TF does have a very good screen rez and colors while it works though. I will miss my True Flat Screen Though!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Gone through 3 in two years
I just received my third monitor in almost 2 years, the first lasted a month, started flickering and died completely. They sent a replacement, it made a crackling noise within a month, just got around to sending it back and I received this one two days ago. It went out tonight, loud crack and now the middle of the screen is almost too blurry to see. One note, in their 3 year KARES replacement program, they replace your monitor with a REFURBISHED monitor, not a new one. I just put my old monitor in the mail back to them today and I have to call them tomorrow to tell them that this one has died already.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Awesome Monitor
This is one of the best monitors I have ever used! I got the monitor for less than $300. This monitor uses the tube from a SONY monitor that costs about $500. The colors and resolution are truly fantastic. Another good feature is that it remembers the settings for all the resolutions. I normally use it at 1280x1024, but games and watching DVDs I lower it and I still get a perfectly positioned full screen image. Just a note, mine came with two dead pixels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really into gaming?
...Initially I had doubts about a small name like KDS, especially since I was big on gaming. But after seeing the specs for 85hz refresh rate AT UNBELIEVABLE 1600x1200, I grabbed this sucker. Am I glad, now paired with the geforce3, I can play games like black and white and unreal torunament at 1600x1200 flicker free for hours without stressing my eyes. Imagine the detail of the little village people when you pump the resolution that high. As for Max Payne, let's just say you can almost grab the bullets as they zooms by.
Ok, enough of the gaming stuff, for those who are into text and graphics, be warned that this monitor exhibits slight blurs in text quality at above 1024x768 but remains readable up to but not including 1600x1200. Nonetheless, if you are playing games, it doesn't matter and the sharp quality in games alone warrants my recommendation. Gamer to gamer, take my advice, you won't regret buying this sucker.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY IMPRESSIVE! BUY IT!
I have been looking for a new monitor for some time now and I stubled upon this KDS monitor. This monitor is much better than Samsung's Dynaflat or Viewsonic's Perfectflat lines. This is due to the Trinitron technology which is truly perfectly flat. For what you're getting, the price of this monitor is fabulous. Not very many monitors have Trinitron technology, and even the ones that do (especially Sony) are incredibly expensive. I have spent hours on the computer and this monitor does not strain my eyes at all. The black text on white and the colors look amazing. The digital controls and the interface are very neat, complete, and easy to navigate. This monitor is very versatile and can go to a very high resolution of 1,600 x 1,200. Games will look much better at this resolution if you have the graphics power to do it. The monitor has no glare at all; I have a lamp right next to it. The refresh rate is very fast and I cannot see it no matter how I look at the monitor. There is really nothing wrong with this monitor other than the two very thin lines going across it, but they are very small and are very easy to get used to (plus you can prove that you have a Trinitron monitor :) I heard that KDS is not making this line anymore, so hurry and buy one of these and change the way you think about monitors. Great job KDS! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In this non-expert's opinion...
I just got this monitor, and it looks great. I managed to find it for a great price, but it doesn't strike me as a low-quality item. It has digital input as well as analog, it looks great, and seems sturdy. I hesitate to give it 5 stars for 2 reasons:
1) I have no idea about reliability.
2) I am far from an LCD expert.
That said, I'm very satisfied with my purchase so far, and am looking forward to years of staring at it.
I use mine for watching movies, reading lots of text, and that's about it, so I can't speak for the monitor's value for gaming. Your mileage may vary.
Looks like it might be out of production, but if you can hunt it down I would recommend this monitor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture and inexpensive too!
I've had this monitor for several months now and am still amazed that such a good display was relatively cheap. Tons of screen space. Just tried the DisplayMate demo from PC Mag. It's clean and perfectly aligned (I'm using the digital input with Radeon VE graphics card). No dead / on pixels. Just wish the bezel was black instead of silver ...

4-0 out of 5 stars KDS Rad- 9 - Great quality for the money
I've owned my KDS RAD-9 LCD monitor for about six months and am still very pleased with it. I've been very happy with the picture quality, reliability and stylish looks of this monitor. In using it to replace my 21" CRT, I've gained a ton of desk space, plus I don't feel I've lost any screen real estate.

One of the reasons I was willing to go with a KDS LCD monitor is that I had purchased the KDS RAD-7 for my boyfriend for Christmas in 2001. It was a bargain at [$$](excellent at that time), has a great screen and has been trouble-free for the year+ that he's had it.

Neither our RAD-7, nor our RAD-9 has a single blown pixel, which I also find impressive.

I have only two, relatively minor criticism for the RAD-9. One is that you cannot adjust the height that the screen rises above the base. At 5'2" I'm not very tall, and my computer desk has an unremovable monitor riser, so I had to increase my chair height in order to view the monitor from an ergonomic angle.

The other issue is the cable management "door" on the back of the monitor. While it's great that they made an effort to beautify the back of the monitor, it is rather flimsy and can be a bit of a pain to attach. Still, I consider these two issues a small price to pay for the enjoyment I get from this monitor.

As to the person who complained about the quality of the image, it is possible they weren't using the native resolution of the monitor - that would degrade the image quality to some degree on ANY LCD monitor. Based on my experiences with the RAD-9 and RAD-7 monitors, I personally would not hesitate to buy a KDS RAD series LCD monitor in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars KDS RAD-9
I looked around a lot at various monitors which is made difficult because many stores hook banks of monitors up to a split signal making it hard to judge. Almost bought a Viewsonic VX900 but after looking very closely at the RAD9 I chose the RAD9. It arrived with no bad pixels and the resolution is "stunning" and I am not even using a dvi based video card (yet). The monitor is very sleek and a well thought out design. I use my mine primarily for reading/writing text documents and even a slight lack of clarity would be a problem for me; the RAD9 is crystal clear - even very small fonts are readable.(most LCD monitors look great with graphics images and it is text that reveals the warts).

2-0 out of 5 stars KDS RAD-9
I compared this monitor with a Samsung 17" LCD side by side. This monitor just doesn't worth the money. The image isn't clear, and the color is not natual. Although the text looks clean. If you want to buy a LCD monitor, I suggest you not to buy this one. It is cheaper than others, but the image quality goes down with the price, too... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Looked great until it stopped working!
The picture was great and the on-screen control display managed to shape up what seemed to be a horribly distorted image. When I first turned on the monitor the image was so terribly warped that I flinched and figured I had to ship it back, but the on screen display appeared and after 5-10 minutes of adjustment, all was quite well. The image was sharp and bright for about 1.5 weeks. One evening I noticed everything was a little dark. After about 10-15 minutes, it looked as if I'd turned the contrast down to 0. In fact, I brought up the OSD and turned the contrast down to 0, and there was no difference in picture at that point. ...and then I replaced it. I bought its replacement, a KDS-XF9e at ...for $...including tax. This is another KDS Xtreme Flat 19" monitor, very similar to this one, and I've had it for a week or two and it has been performing well.

This seems to be a very nice montior for the price, so you might as well give it a try. I work in IT at a company that uses KDS monitors at our workstations, and approximately 1 out of 4 that we receive fails out of the box or shortly thereafter. I figure you have a 75% chance at a great monitor for a great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best monitor I've ever had ...
After using a 17" "old" monitor , this monitor surprised me @ how bright the images are , I can see images on my favorite websites that used to be just a blur . I really like this monitor . The overall depth is not much more than my old 17" monitor .

5-0 out of 5 stars Best value for the price.
I have had this monitor for well over a year and without exception has performed very well. Colors, images, display are very easy for system usage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you know what you want?
Then you get it. Make sure that you know this is NOT a trinitron. So, it won't have a flat display. It does have flat glass in front of it tho. don't get me wrong. Five stars means I love it! 19" CRT is great for gaming and real-time graphics work. Colors are near perfect and the price is right. I bought mine for 210 bucks shipped from someplace I dont remember. Amazon.com usually has good/if not the best prices. Get this monitor if you are in the market for a 19" non-flat but near! CRT.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, short cables
This monitor is great for the price. The image quality is excellent on the 18" viewable flat screen. It has a max resolution of 1600x1200 at 75hz (contrary to what the official website says), and recommended at 1280x1024 at 85hz with a .20mm dot pitch. The only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is that the cord that connects to the computer is only about two or three feet long which means most people will have to buy an extension cable too. Otherwise, highly recommended... ... Read more
