1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
This monitor, like the KDS monitor I bought 3 years prior, becomes too bright after approximately one year. Adjusting the brightness does not help. My NEC monitor which I have had for more than 6 years has lasted longer than two of these KDS monitors. If you can afford it, buy a better monitor.

I will not buy another KDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE
I am very pleased both with the monitor and Amazon. The monitor was in original package and shipped securely and in 3 business days with the free super saver shipping!! It is sleek and has a great picture, and I am sure that with more time and tweaking that it will be even better. I just got it yesterday so this may be premature, but I am very happy. I set it up in minutes without any problems at all. I highly recommend this monitor if you are on a tight budget like I am and want a nice black flat screen monitor with a three year warranty!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
For the price of this flat screen monitor it really is a great value. Took some adjustments to get picture fine tuned, but what doesnt? Downloaded ntest.exe for the calibrations. Run monitor at 1024x768 85 hz refresh. Flat screen is a joy to look at. One problem (or two): monitor came without driver CD nor any instruction manual. Minor problem, seeing as how I had no intention of using [the disc] anyway. Although, the drivers from the KDS page are not digitally signed by MS? Oh well. At least XP detects it as Plug and Play Monitor and with that works perfectly. Controls for brightness/contrast and screen size/position/shape/temperature are accesible via onscreen menu which is easy to understand. And it's a black monitor which is a plus anytime. Take care.

3-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old monitor had better picture
This monitor is so-so... Everything looks washed out even when the brightness is turned down almost all the way... you'll have to make alot of adjustments to bring the picture to your liking.. to tell you the truth, my five year old monitor had better color though the refresh rates were slower than it is on this. The monitor is easy on your eyes once you get the settings right. This monitor is nice and cheap but I'd recommend you spend a little more money on something better. Of course I'm never going to purchase this model again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Simply put -- if you're looking for a great looking monitor at a great price, this is the one.

First of all, bravo Amazon for wonderful service. I ordered this item late on a Thursday afternoon, got Free SuperSaver Shipping, and it was still delivered to my doorstep the very next day.

As for the monitor itself, I am very impressed. You just can't beat the quality for the price. I am running at 1024X768 75hz. The .20mm dot pitch ensures a very crisp image and the flat tube leaves no distortion. The OSD is packed full of options and very easy to use so you can completely customize the display if you want. For the technophobes, however, the basic brightness/contrast adjustmnets are immediately available with one-button access.

My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because when I received the monitor the tape that secured the box closed had broken. Both the top and bottom were only secured with a single piece of tape. Even the UPS driver commented that is wasn't sufficent. A longer journey and the monitor could have fallen out. I don't know if this is an Amazon or KDS problem, but it is perhaps something that should be addressed.

In conclusion -- if you're budget is tight and your eyes are tired, this is a wonderful monitor. Nothing fancy, just a nice bright, crisp image. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid mid-range monitor with dim/weak colors
Overall a very solid mid-range monitor, I would recommend it to anyone who isn't worried about the brightness or color-correctness of the picture. However, I am very picky and ended up returning it and buying a high-end monitor.

Pros:
-Passed all geometry tests with flying colors.
-Text is very readable in 1280x1024 (10 point Arial and Windows 2000 default fonts).
-Absolutely silent changing resolutions (no annoying clicking).

Cons:
-Text/folders in Windows explorer get a little hard to read in 1600x1200.
-Black text on white is greyish, not truly black.
-Green is a little weak (too yellow).
-Picture is not very bright, colors seem dim and stale, especially browns look washed out in OpenGL games
-No amount of adjusting will correct the above.
-75hz refresh has noticeable flicker for me, so the 1600x1200 mode while it looked OK wasn't really useable for me at the max of 75hz.

P.S. If you find this review helpful please post one of your own on whatever HW you buy to keep the "system" working- thanks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor!
I have been scouring the Internet for the past few days looking for an inexpensive monitor to replace my old 15-inch Trinitron monitor from Gateway until I came across this little gem.

I am very impressed with the picture and quality of this monitor. It is just big enough to use with a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and works fine with both Windows and Linux. This monitor has plenty of geometry and color controls and delivers fantastic contrast for a CRT monitor. I was a bit hesitant to purchase a flat-screen monitor for this price; in some of my shopping I found flat-screen monitors advertised for the same price when they were just a convex (curved) screen behind flat glass casing.

For the price, you cannot get a better deal. I used the Super-Saver Shipping option and it was at my doorstep in less than 24 hours from when I placed the order. The KDS XtremeFlat XF-7i 17" CRT Monitor is truly flat and makes any viewing angle comfortable; it is very easy on both the eyes and the wallet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Choice
I bought this monitor to use with a second computer in my home. So far, this monitor has exceeded my expectations. The view has been more than adequate for surfing the internet and using general office applications. I wanted to see just how good the picture quality can be. So, I installed a Sony DVD player on the computer so that I can test how the monitor will look playing a movie. I watched The Return of the King on this system and was impressed by the picture quality. Take the fact that the graphics card on this system is geared towards the business user and you will even be more impressed with the monitor.

My primary computer system has a 19-inch Trinitron monitor. And honestly, if I am just surfing the internet and sending e-mail, this 17-inch KDS is just as nice to look at. The Trinitron monitor does show more saturated colors when watching DVDs and such, but that could be due to that system's superior graphics card.

I can find no fault or shortcomings in this 17-inch KDS monitor. I can recommend this unit, with no reservations, to anyone looking for a 17-inch flat screen CRT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey Designers!!!!
If your a hardcore graph-x designer and need a hassle free, well ventilated monitor that has excellent refresh rates, look no further than the XF-7t. This monitor is long and heavy, but hey your not designing monitor cases!! As far as quality, i couldn't find a better CRT with such a fine horizontal Dot pitch(.22mm!!). Your graph-x will kick ass!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture Quality...
After having a flat panel monitor LCD that I really liked and selling it, I was hesitant to buy a Flat CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor. However, after having it for about a week now, I can say it is the finest monitor I have ever owned. It is bright, vibrant and does not distort or anything around the end's. Oh, and about what the person wrote below about it being huge, well no kidding, its a CRT monitor with a flat glass screen, not an LCD screen. There is a difference, so if you are buying this, remember, its like the old monitors everyone owned, but has a flat glass screen to get rid of the distortions. I personally would recommend this monitor, as I love it now. Oh by the way, I use it for 3d animation and programming. It works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice monitor for the money
Remember, this monitor has a *flat* screen, not a *thin* screen. It is just as large as a normal CRT monitor.

That being said, the picture quality is excellent. I don't think you can expect any more for the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars They should re-name this monitor the Hunchback
I don't know how they can get away with calling this a flat monitor, it had a huge lump in thw back that makes it 2-3 times as thick as every other Flat monitor out there. Might as well buy a tube monitor and save the money, the desk space savings is not that great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor, 3 year warranty!
OK, it is huge, I admit. But tucked into the allotted cubby hole on my computer desk it is not that noticeably monstrous. If you are looking for a space saver, look elsewhere. Having said that, the resolution and look is beautiful. The difference of the flat screen is truly noticeable and easy on the eyes. For the price, with a 3 year parts & labor guarantee and free shipping-- throw in a coupon (or not) and you've got a deal that can't be beat with a stick. If you have no concern about space, don't hesitate to consider the XF-7T. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars KDS VS-195 is NOT a AV-195T!
Be careful when you order this monitor because the editorial review is misleading. The AV-195T is a great monitor and it does have the Trinitron tube. The monitor that Amazon sells here though is the KDS VS-195 which is only an average monitor compared to the AV-195T.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this monitor
The colors and graphic display are vivid, the size is great, its sleek, very high resolution. Everything seems much clearer on this 15 inch flat screen then it did on my old 17 inch room hog! I am very happy that I bought my CPU separate from the monitor, this is a great deal, very easy to install, the desktop panel is easy to operate, I highly recommend!!

5-0 out of 5 stars At least as good as advertised!!
This monitor is everything people say it is and more. Compared to the price of other LCD monitors, it is truly a bargain. Simple hookup, (plug in & go!), clarity, sharpness, brilliance of colors, looks, space savings, adjustable tilt, it has it all, far as I'm concerned, and I believe it to be the least expensive LCD on the market today! 1-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for the Replacement Warranty!
I purchased this monitor based on a review in Fortune magazine (a mistake to begin with) and the irresistable price.

The image needed considerable tweaking after I unpacked the monitor, but after downloading the driver from KDS it looked fine and does not have the flicker of my laptop.

The first monitor lasted for a few months, but the screen began to go bad from right to left, then completely died. The warranty provided 3 years parts and service and returning the defective monitor was painless. The second monitor died with a bad on/off switch. Ditto for the third. I'm now on my fourth monitor and this whole process started less than two years ago! When this one dies I'll purchase from another manufacturer. I'm only willing to put up with this for so long...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor for the price
My own experience with this monitor has been nothing short of excellent: cheap price, free mouse, excellent display quality. I've noticed that the people who knock this monitor don't mention what resolution or refresh rate they're running at. They probably don't realize that most LCDs are designed only to run at a specific resolution and that if you change resolutions, characters become "blocky" and the entire display becomes fuzzy. This monitor's optimal display resolution is 1024x768 at a refresh rate of 60Hz. You have to remember, CRTs and LCDs are different types of technology. LCDs don't actually refresh the same way that CRTs do, hence you can get away with a lower refresh rate. As for the guy who said you can't tilt this monitor and that you have to stick a piece of paper under the stand, I'm speechless. One other thing, the response time on this monitor is pretty fast. I can play games like Unreal Tournament or watch DVDs on it with no ghosting whatsoever. KDS has been known to be a cheap brand, but sometimes you just have to give credit where credit is due. The Rad-5 truly is an excellent monitor, especially if you consider how much you pay for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WORTH THE PRICE
I was looking around the internet for good quality LCD screens, there are many cheaper 17inch LCD screens, and there are many more expensive. But if you want quality then I would recommend that you look at KDS screens. I have tried many LCD screens, and none have the quality that this one has. I have tried LG LCD screens, and Sceptre, but they dont have the quality of the KDS LCD screens. The Hf ranges from 30kHz to 80 kHz, and the Vf ranges from 50kHz to 70kHz. I play alot of games and work on my computer, and I also edit video on this screen which comes out very clear. So if you can afford this screen I recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars KDS Monitor lasts...
I had this monitor and it lasted only 3 years (the warranty time) then it just went blacked out.

3-0 out of 5 stars KDS Monitor Blacked out after 3 years
Right after the WARRANTY the monitor blacked out and doesn't work! It was alright for 3 years but got messed up and now doesn't work. Be WARY!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I saw this model as well as others at a retail store and purchased this on line after comparing to all the other models. This was the best price and quality. I am extremely satisfied with my KDS monitor and would highly recommend this to everyone. You can't go wrong with this value!!

4-0 out of 5 stars solid 17" monitor for the money!
If you're looking for a best low-end 17" monitor, then this is it! The good thing is that it works well in all resolutions, even 1280x1024. The colors are bright and clear. The base is better than others, allowing you to easily adjust the monitor to your desired position. Also, it has a good replacement program in case it gets damaged during shipping. I have bought 2 of these for my company already and would look to them as the first choice for basic 17" monitor functionality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Does what i need, but i wish i had the 19"
I built my PC and added this monitor about 3 years ago. It's still performing just as well as it did when i bought it. It's easy to learn to use (as far as video adjustments like horizontal/vertical and pincushioning), displays colors really well, and is easy to get drivers for. I tend to update my drivers once every 6 months or so since there seems to always be a newer one available. I run Win2K with a Voodoo 3 video card. It's a more than adequate monitor at the cheap end of the spectrum. I paid $250, but nowadays you shouldn't pay more than $150 for a new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Monitor I ever had
The best monitor I ever had. 3 years and still going strong up until today. I bent a pin in the connector and tried to straighten it out. Well guess what, I broke one off. Looking for a replacement cable. Other than today this monitor has never ever failed me. If you come across a VS-7e "GRab it". You wont regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Money for value!
This is an excellent monitor. Used it for over a year and still sharp as ever! Great deal if u can find it at a good price. But its discontinued so u may need to look for the replacement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good picture - good value
I bought this exact model 2 years ago and I do not regret it at all. For the price you get a 16" viewable surface, product support from koreadatasystems (you can even find the driver for Win NT/95/98/2000 there) and a monitor that will hold up through many computer upgrades. The only disappointing factor about this monitor is that the dot pitch is rather high in comparison with other well known brands. This means if you spent $$$ on your GeForce card you may not be seeing the entire picture the way you probably should be seeing it. If, however, you are looking for a good well built monitor and have a budget - this one is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Affordable 17" Monitor
The KDS VS-7E is an affordable alternative to those expensive 17 inch monitors. It has great .27 dot pitch resolution, a bright and crisp 16 inch viewable screen, and vivid colors. It works great with my everyday applications such as MS Word and Internet Explorer, but it also performs extremely well with my 3D games such as Quake II, Tribes, and Expendable. I like this monitor very much because it has all the great feutures of more expensive models at a price most can afford. A great choice for the budget minded consumer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Picture, Affordable Price, Pleasing Interface
This is the best monitor I've ever owned. There are two very thin, almost invisible stabilizer threads at the 1/4 and 3/4 vertical points, you don't notice them after a few weeks but at first they may be a bother. What I like most is you get the incredible Sony picture, without the ugly purple Sony casing. The GUI is much simpler to use than most monitors I've played with, and I like the fact that you don't have to wade through three menu levels to degauss - the degauss button is right on the front.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant suprise
I had done some research on the cheaper entry level 17-inch monitors by Samsaung, Hitachi, and Sony. I went to the store with the intention of buying one of the entry-level Samsung monitors, since they had gotten some decent reviews but were still not in the higher price range.

It was a close call, but I made the decision to go with the KDS over the Samsung. They were both the same price, but the KDS monitor seemed to have an advantage with clarity and brightness. It was not far from the entry level Sony 17-inch, and was a lot less money.

The KDS, like the Sony, uses a Trinitron tube, but I would still say that the Sony monitor is better. I'm not sure of the technical differences between the KDS Trinitron and the Sony Trinitron and I'm not going to try to understand. I've worked with computers fo a long time, but when it comes to monitors I think it is important to just buy what looks good to you. The best description I can give is that the KDS was similar to the Sony, but the Sony appeared to have a little better quality - or maybe it was that nice Sony plastic molding...who knows?

I suppose there is always the chance that the differences in picture were due to the messed up settings on the store demos, but after playing with the controls for a while I finally had to make the conlusion that this monitor was brighter and had much better contrast then some of the other models in it's price range. It also seems to have shaper definition than similar priced montiors. The only drawback is that the colors do not seem as vivid on this model, but my judgement is not complete until I spend more time with the color settings.

I am at a loss why this monitor has gotten such bad reviews in a few of the articles I was able to find. I would be the first to agree that there are monitors with better color for the same price as this one, but this model seems to have excellent brightness and sharpness, which can be an advantage if you are planning to work with a lot of text.

There are definetly beter monitors for $100 or so more dollars, but I would suggest this monitor if you are specificly looking for something with a clean and bright picture and you don't want to spend $300 dollars. I may be buying another monitor in the near future and I will definetly look at some of the other brands with better color, but overall I am not disappointed with the KDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
There are three monitors in my house: A Relisys .27 17" monitor, a Dell .26 19" monitor, and this KDS Avitron .24 17" Trinitron monitor. If I had to choose one to live the rest of my life with, it would certainly be this Avitron.

The picture is extraordinarily sharp. I can read the text perfectly from several feet away. The brightness is awesome - when I work on the other computers, their screens look so dim!

Along with every Trinitron monitor comes the two faint horizontal lines across the screen. I became used to these within a week or two. I barely notice them.

The on screen display is great, and presents you with many geometry options. Although I have not been able to get my display area completely square, the picture is great. And, besides the extremely faint blurring in the corners, this is by far the best monitor I've ever used.

I am a computer cosmetic freak - this monitor mixed with a nice video card will convince you that the [price] was worth it.

(ps- YES- the screen is PERFECTLY flat- it looks concave at first. After using this for one day, looking at my Dell monitor reminds me of one of those fish-eye mirrors on a bus.)

5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
Its fine 0.24-millimeter dot pitch delivers crisp text and sharp lines, and its anti-static, anti-glare screen treatment greatly reduces eye fatigue while maintaining the display quality and color intensity.

Everything about this monitor is adequate, from the colors, to the text sharpness. I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Decent quality at an excellent price.
I just received my new monitor and I have set up in about ten minutes. Decent picture - not the best I have seen but for the price, a great value.

The on-screen menu takes some time to understand (of course I did not read the instructions) but fairly easy to learn how to navigate.

I would highly recommend this monitor for the home/office user who wants a larger monitor, decent picture quality, and a great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Monitor for the Price
I needed a new monitor, and I wanred somthing big. But I didn't want to spend a lot of money. This is a wonderful monitor for it's price, and so far it has been workng fine. When I first pluged it in, I was running it at a lower resolution than it's max. For some reason, doing this created odd wavy lines on the screen. I was all ready to complain and send it back when I decided to try it at the max resolution. Now it looks crystal clear and works like a charm! So yo, buy one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor For the Price
I work at company where $700-$1000 19" and 21" monitors are common, I must say for the price I paid, I feel like I have ordered one of those $1000 monitors. The quality of the picture is great, better than many of the monitors I use at work. If you are looking for a monitor that supplies high quality for a low price, this is it. It performs incredibly well at 1280x1024 resolution in both Windows 98 and RedHat Linux 6.1. The picture is clean and crisp. However, the on-screen displays can be cumbersome at times. All in all this is a great monitor for home/gaming

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Especially Considering Price
Paid $500; now it's $300. Have had it 2 years with much use. Great picture and is excellent for games. One thing is you have to sit back a ways; the screen is like television.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great price but short life
I just received this monitor a few days ago. It worked fine the first day except the right side of the display was a bit higher than the left one. You wouldn't see it, if not noticing. The second day the display started blinking and came out black afterwards. I plan to give it another try but after reading the reviews on other model of KDS monitor (KDS VS-19SN), it seems that they have bad life too. Please read them before you make any decision on buying KDS monitor. For your information, KDS offers 3-year warranty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor.
I bought this at Walmart and I am very pleased with it. The only bad thing I can say about it is the cord you plug into the back of it does not click in so it can fall out if you move the monitor around alot. I have my settings at 1024 x 768 with the refresh rate at 75 Hertz and 32 bit color and it looks great. It is really nice when watching DVD's or playing games on it. The built in speakers is also a nice feature for those without alot of room on their desk. I have a 5 speaker surround sound set so I don't use the built in speakers but I did try them out to see how they sound and they do sound good. It is a little high priced but if you want a good LCD flat screen monitor with speakers built in this is a good choice to make. ... Read more
