Amazon.com Review

The stately S412PBE floorstanding loudspeaker is the flagship model in JBL's Studio series (available in black as well as beech). JBL arms this four-way, full-range speaker with a 12-inch, 200-watt powered woofer and dedicated LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This LFE input obviates the need for a separate subwoofer for home theater or music listening, especially with programs recorded in 5.1-channel surround formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Remember, though--you'll need to plug the speaker into an AC outlet to appreciate the onboard amplification.

The S412PBE also features a stunning 92 dB sensitivity for uncommonly loud, dynamic performance with almost any amplifier. Use two for stereo or up to five for multichannel applications (though center-channel placement would almost preclude the use of a television).

Much of what you're paying for here is the powered-woofer component, which alone is worth its weight in bass-chuffing DVDs. However, the S412PBE also boasts myriad design benefits, including PolyPlas speaker cones, an Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguide, a Linear Field Proximity (LPF) bezel, Straight-line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks, and a FreeFlow flared bass port.

PolyPlas, a polymer-coated cellulose fiber, adds rigidity and damping to a cone without unduly increasing its mass. This cone, together with a durable rubber surround (the part of the cone that attaches to the rest of the speaker), enables the speaker to deliver high sound levels without breakup or distortion--and the S412PBE can play stunningly loud and distortion-free. If you're listening loud enough to distort this speaker, you should probably be more worried for your hearing than your stereo.

The S412PBE's driver complement consists of three PolyPlas-cone drivers (with diameters of 12, 6, and 4 inches) and a 1-inch pure-titanium tweeter. All are magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion when you place them near a TV.

The pure-titanium tweeter uses JBL's patented EOS waveguide to focus the sonic image and reduce time-delay artifacts. The EOS waveguide also increases the tweeter's dynamic range and its output at lower frequencies, which improves the transition between the high frequencies and the midrange. The LFP (Linear Field Proximity) bezel, which houses both the tweeter and the 4-inch midrange driver, smoothes out that transition even further. By minimizing the distance between these critical sound sources, JBL sidesteps the phase problems that result from sounds meeting your ears with different arrival times.

JBL's custom-designed drivers allow it to use simple, Straight-line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks with quality electrical components. These networks further smooth the speaker's frequency and power response while minimizing processing that could otherwise degrade your audio signal. JBL built the S412PBE's woofers into cast-aluminum frames, which--because of their solidity--reduce distortion and increase power-handling capability over stamped steel frames.

On the inside, the drivers' oversized Kapton voice coils and HeatScape motor structures preserve performance accuracy during extended listening, prolong driver life, and reduce power compression through their responsiveness. Finally, JBL's FreeFlow flared bass port releases bass energy from behind the 12-inch woofer through a vent that precisely matches the size and configuration of the driver and speaker cabinet.

The sound on this speaker is clear, detailed, and punchy. If you like to play your music and movies loud, this is the speaker for you. It sounds good at low levels, but we found that it sounded better the louder we cranked it--especially when we fed the speaker a low-frequency (subwoofer) output from our amplifier. For best results you'll want to listen no closer than 10 feet, on average; close listening tips the S412PBE's frequency balance too far to the bright side for our tastes.

When it's positioned well, the S412PBE packs one heck of a wallop. The onboard amplifier deepens the bass response to an impressive 32 Hz, producing the cinematic low frequencies while freeing your surround receiver or amplifier from the intense demands of dynamic bass reproduction. The bass may not be quite as tight or well defined as in good sealed-enclosure speakers, but at this price we're not complaining.

If your space and budget allow, the JBL S412PBE makes a stunning addition to any home theater or stereo system.

Pros:

  • Clear, powerful sound
  • Natural frequency balance
  • Plays very loud without distortion
  • Great bass response

Cons:

  • Bass not as tight as good sealed-enclosure speakers

4-0 out of 5 stars A good home theater speaker
I've had these speakers for about 7 months now. These speakers sound the best in a large room with vaulted ceilings, or in a room that doesn't readily absorb the sound as easily. The reason being - they're a tad bit bright and forward sounding. I've tried these speakers in conjunction with 4 different amps - 2 hifi, and 2 Home theater amps, and tested them in 3 different homes with different accoustical properties.

Here's what's good about them - a great-sounding mid-range - female vocals sound astonishingly good. Also these speakers have the ability to effortlessly deliver loads of sound. Bass is good, even without the subs running. You get a flat (even)tonal response without the subs running, which is good. You get a drastic increase in bass output by activating the built-in subs. If you don't run a line-in to the subs portion, the sub-range will run passively through the speaker wire (down to 35 HZ), and the sound will still be good-sounding and even. Therefore, unless you're an absolute bass junky, I would recommend saving your money and getting speakers without the built-in subs. If you would like to activate the built-in subs in conjunction with a standard stereo amp (with no LFO, sub-out), you can run line from your pre-outs to the sub line-ins as long as you purchase an external low-pass crossover to place in it's path. There is no crossover built-in to the active sub, since it assumes this speaker will be used for Home Theater applications primarily.

Weaknesses - no built-in low-pass crossover for active subs, but easily remedied by purchasing one and adding it on yourself (only for those using a standard stereo amp/receiver). Also, some prefer home theater subs to be positioned out of the cabinet, for more rumbling effect - whatever preferences may be.
Also, this speaker was designed with too many voice cones - could have easily been a 3-way design. However, as JBL knows, there's "marketing crossovers", and somehow people think that more is better, when in reality, it often isn't. Also, these speakers weight close to 90 lbs, and their plastic legs probably won't take too much abuse before they give out. If you have thick carpet, the pegs will completely sink down, effectively negating the effect of the pegs. Also, the front grill is extremely flimsy, which is pretty common these days. Musically, you may have to find non-bright/ non-forward sounding source components, preamp/amps, to make the sound more listenable for extended periods of time, or else find an ambient space in your house for these monsters - because they throw the sound right at you and wear you out otherwise.

This is a great speaker for self-contained HT. Music applications - Does best with rap, R&B, and other bass-heavy music, if you don't want to bother shopping for additional subs.

5-0 out of 5 stars blow the house down!
These speakers are straight out amazing.

First, in response to the 1-star rating below, which says that the bass is "terrible"... that could not be farther from the truth. These speakers use a powered sub-woofer, and if it's not connected to a sub-woofer output, you will not get the sound you're buying. The little red lights at the bottom turn green when the sub-woofers are activated, which will let you know when eveything's working.

Ok, to the review. These statuesque speakers carry all types of music beautifully. From the most crisp, tear jerking choral pieces, to the heaviest bass-blowing techno trance, to Dolby 5.1 soundtracks, these things sound so good it will make the hair on your neck stand up and cheer! And they look awesome- modern and classy with the screens on, or aggressive and mean with the screens removed (but note, the cases are not real wood... they're actually some kind of metallic plating).

These speakers sound really solid at low volumes (maybe a slight bit too bass-heavy for some tastes on account of the sub-woofer which you can EQ out), but once you crank these speakers up... and don't be afraid to turn that dial up half-way or more... you won't believe what you just bought! The highs really come alive at greater volume, and when I say alive I mean "alive"... it sounds like the performers are sitting on your coffe table!

Also, because they do include a powered sub-woofer, this is a great alternative to 5.1 sound for those that don't have the space for all those speakers (like me). You can take full advantage of the .1 Low Frequency channel with these sub-woofers, and let your amp convert the dolby output to stereo output and it will still sound amazing. You may not hear the bullets whiz by your head at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan, but you won't be disappointed when you hear helicopters flying right by your home!

Spend the cash! You'll love them! They're big enough to hug, and make a great design statement in your living room!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I spent the money!
I debated for weeks over whether I really needed new speakers (I'm a practical person with a limited budget) but I decided to splurge and buy these. All I can say is...WOW! I'm really glad I spent the money. I have never heard music or movie soundtracks sound better. I'm listening to each and every CD I own all over again and enjoying every minute of it. This is one of the clearest speakers I have ever heard and the sound is magnificent....smooth, rich and well-defined. If you're thinking of buying these, go for it...you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top speaker for a great price.
I don't understand the 1 star reviews below. Perhaps their speakers were defective in some way. These speakers are seamless and revealing from top to botom with excellent definition and fine balance. The best from JBL so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money at ALL!
I have owned these speakers for a couple months and they sound awful for their price. The Bass is so terrible. If you put a KLH speaker next to it i would pick the KLH. I do not reccomend these speakers at all. Take my word for it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

JBL's NSP1 is a compact home-theater speaker package assembled from two models in JBL's Northridge series, the N24 bookshelf speakers and the N-Center center-channel. JBL's goal with Northridge is to bring its extensive professional-audio experience home to consumers at affordable prices. After spending some time with the NSP1 system, we'd say that JBL has more than realized that goal.

The N24 bookshelf (the system employs four of these speakers to furnish the left and right front and surround channels) is the smallest of the eight Northridge models. Each speaker in the series uses identical 0.75-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeters and woofers made of JBL's PolyPlas, a polymer-coated cellulose fiber. (Three-way models also contain PolyPlas midrange drivers.)

Each N24 contains one 4-inch woofer; the N-Center has two 5-inch woofers. These custom-designed drivers benefit from technology that's been borrowed from JBL's professional models, such as Kapton voice coils and HeatScape motor structures, which endow the drivers with tolerance for high temperatures. (In speaker parlance, that means "high volume levels.") Robust power handling is a good thing for any speaker and especially with the wide dynamics required of home-theater models.

JBL's Straight-line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks route the audio frequencies to their respective drivers and smooth the speakers' frequency and power response, while minimizing processing that could otherwise degrade your audio signal.

These speakers are housed in rich-looking, dark-gray cabinets with bow-shaped backs and matching grille cloths. A welcome visual change from the usual rectangular box, these curved enclosures are also designed to combat the buildup of standing waves (uneven acoustical pressure that can unfavorably color the sound).

Remove the grille cloth and you'll see the gleaming titanium-laminate dome tweeter and silver-dyed PolyPlas woofer. You'll also see JBL's flared FreeFlow port, which extends bass response and increases sensitivity without adding port noise, sometimes heard as "chuffing."

For speaker terminals, all components of the NSP1 use five-way, nickel-plated binding posts, and JBL thoughtfully includes a plastic socket-style key to tighten them. (Binding posts offer the tightest and most flexible speaker connections, accepting spade lugs, banana plugs, and bare or tinned wires).

You can mount the N24s on walls, shelves, or stands. If you elect to mount them on a wall, which yields the deepest bass response, you can place them either vertically or horizontally. They also swivel side to side and, once tweaked to your satisfaction, lock into place (brackets and hardware are included). If you opt for shelf or stand placement, however, you should place the supplied rubber pads under each speaker to prevent slipping. Either way, make sure the front speakers are equidistant from the sides of your television and are poised at ear level with your seated viewing position. If you mount them above ear level, aim the speakers toward the listening zone.

You can place the rear channels above, below, or even at the same level as your listening position. Remember that for home theater, the goal is to achieve a nonlocalized sound field--that is, one where the sound is diffuse and spacious rather than rendered with pinpoint accuracy, as you usually want for the front speakers. Surround speakers usually work best when placed well above the listening zone, with the sound reflected off the side walls or ceiling.

Multichannel music, however (such as that found on DTS-encoded 5.1-channel CDs), is generally mixed with precise localization in mind, so do take your listening preferences into account when setting these up. Fortunately, the N24s' swiveling brackets let you experiment with placement and angle for the best results.

Center-channel speakers do not afford the same flexibility, and the N-Center is not unusual in this regard. In order to fix dialogue with the picture from your television, the N-Center must be placed at approximately the same level as your screen, either sitting on top of the TV or below it on a shelf.

As for the NSP1 system's sound, starting with music only, the first thing you'll notice is that it produces surprisingly full audio. Jazz CDs sound rich and clear, but don't expect bass and drums to plumb the bottom depths of the frequency range. Trumpets and saxophones come through with terrific, brassy texture and bite, but (predictably) not as much detail or sense of air as they might if heard through costlier speakers. Vocals are uniformly good--articulate, focused, and well balanced. With orchestral music, the N24s throw a relatively wide soundstage, with more than a hint of depth (that is, of the sonic space extending beyond the speakers). But rock fans will almost surely want to add a subwoofer to feel the full impact of their favorite bands.

With DVD-videos, vocal clarity is enhanced by the N-Center, which does a great job of routing the dialogue to the screen. Considering its small size, the complete NSP1 system exhibits very good dynamics, and JBL's close attention to driver matching yields a seamless transition from speaker to speaker, creating a wonderfully complete sonic environment.

Adding a subwoofer to the NSP1 brings out the full glory of 5.1-channel sound (having, as it does, a dedicated low-frequency effects channel--the ".1" in 5.1), and it's worth noting that subwoofers not only make a big difference with action films but bring fullness to all program material, whether cinematic or musical. (With a sub in the system, the main speakers no longer have to reproduce bass frequencies, and everything becomes much clearer and cleaner. Additionally, your amplifier can focus on frequencies that are easier to reproduce, leaving the tough stuff to the amp in your subwoofer.)

To say that JBL has a good reputation in the pro-audio world is an understatement. A staggering 70 percent of the world's theaters, concert halls, and recording studios are equipped with JBL speakers. With the NSP1, JBL brings that experience home at a very attractive price. Minor complaints aside, the NSP1 is a sweet little home-theater speaker package. --Wayne Garcia

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic JBL quality
Best value out there, fantastic sound. Its amazing the sound quality that comes out of these speakers, never thought a 4 1/2 woofer could produce accurate base. I added a JBL subwoofer, and it's outstanding sound. I have this in a large room, 700+ sq feet with high ceilings, and it does a great job. Also, I have 0 trouble with magnetic shielding from the center, as noted by a couple of other reviews here.

Totally satisfied....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for the money
This is the best system to get for the money the bass is the best for the buck

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value And Sound
These speaker sounds great. Looks Good too. No problems with shielding. The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because they can only handle about 100 watts. When I hooked them up to my parasound amp (220 watts per channel) just for the sake of curioisity, I blew them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
For the cost of these speakers the output is great... I think it would suffice to say they are inline with HTD level two's, or Energy take 5.2's... You have to add a sub though! Of course many of you would disagree, but IMHO they are great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied at all...
Before buying this system, I read some reviews at audioreview.com, where some people detected problems with the magnetic shielding of the N-center speaker. I didn't pay attention to that and tried my speaker at house...surprise....when I placed my center speaker on the top of my tv set, the upper corners turned violet. People, this speaker has serious problems with magnetic shielding, and I don't recommend it if you're going to use it in the top of your tv. Believe me, and I'm not first victim. I had to raise my speaker about 7 cm above my tv set, to solve the problem. (I was not supposed to do that, you neither).

Sonically, the system is great, but don't forget adding a good subwoofer. Good blend. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars impressive
i purchased this unit with hopes of experiencing the true essence of low frequency response.this item delivers it's expected purpose. i bought a 10-inch model three years ago. i was so impressed by this model,i use it with my home theater system . the 10inch model can produce low frequencies more accurately than most 12-15 models of other brands out there.this lead to my curiosity about a larger jbl sub unit .i've owned and used this unit for a year , it never dissapointed me.i hope your neighbors are nice people ,you'll be gettin lots of visits and calls from them, trust me. my only problem with this unit is it's size , it's huge and kind of awkward. placement of this unit is a very easy task, it fills the room with exceptional low end virtually anywhere you place it . without getting all technical,i hope this information is helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Subwoofer
(...) This sub is very good. It does an exceptional job handling the ultra-low end, which is what I have it doing (100Hz and lower). This sub is similar to the Audio Source 200 Watt 15" subwoofer but heavier by a bit, a little larger and quite a bit louder. The digital amplifier certaintly does keep a flat frequency response. This sub is definately great for everyday bass used quitely and very good for loud parties (which is partly why I bought it). (...)

2-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
This subwoofer sounds pretty good, and it certainly doesn't lack any punch, but...two things to consider before buying this subwoofer. One, it is HUGE- there will be no hiding this thing. Two, I had mine less than 3 months before it broke. it is still under warranty, but this thing is no picnic to load into the car and drive 50 miles to get fixed. I suggest before you buy, check JBL's website to see how close the closest service location is and clear out a BIG open space near your receiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good
I just bought this week. I debated with myself for over two years regarding the need for a sub. I currently use 6 JBL 4312's and a couple of LX-55's in my system. I didn't think I could get much better than that. Boy was I wrong. This sub added so much warmth to the music. I have not tried it with any movies yet, but the music so much better. It also reduced the power demands on my power amps for the other speakers since they don't have to attempt to reproduce the low frequencies. Setup of this sub is extremely easy. Had it up an running in about 20 minutes. The hardest part was getting itin the house up the stairs after UPS dropped it off. It is heavy and much bigger than I thought it would be. (81 Pounds Shipping according to UPS)

If you don't have a large room, I would reccommend the smaller 12" or 10 " sub. This thing is a monster, but the sound is incredible, so far.

I plan to put it through the paces over Thanksgiving.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great Sub!
I have two of these, and would not recomend buying more than one. If you want more bass than this one can put out I sugest you go with a bigger sub. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good speaker, you can't miss hearing.
I bought the whole set of surround speakers all of them JBL, and for this speaker I have to say that it's really good. At first, I didn't really care much about the center speaker, till I really found out what it really does. Most of the dialog and main sounds from a movie come out through a center speaker, while the front and surround serve for music and effects.
This speaker it's pretty good. The two 5" woofers handle everything from music to movies without a hassle. They handle bass pretty good, and the tweeter is also very good and clear.
Very good combination with any "northridge series" speakers.
I have two front ND 310-II, a N-Center, and N-24 surround, accompanied by a Powersound P12 JBL woofer.
Perfect combination for a perfect surround system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulate, focused, and well balanced!
JBL has successfully voiced matched (timbre) the N-Center to the JBL N24s, where together (after REF Level Calibration via Video Essentials DVD), they provide a much more convincing, extremely wide front & surround stage. The N-Center locks the dialog in the center of the TV clearly with realistic impact. The success of this N-Center and N24's is evident by the common accolades that describes the NSP1 HT Speaker package: "Timbre matching; sound was superb; Imaging was excellent; smooth, uniform response; rich and clear; pleasingly natural with stereo music; articulate, focused, and well balanced."...

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
For years I had just used my TV speaker as a center speaker. Why? The center speaker I wanted to get went out of business and I just never got around to buying a center speaker. JBL has been a leader in the speaker world,,it was at a good price so I decided to treat myself to one. Wow, what I was missing for so long. I can't compare it with other center speakers, but this JBL is simply awesome. It has a very clear and sharp sound that brought out the total listening pleasure of my surround speakers. Now when a cannon shoots, I jump. You can't go wrong with this speaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't taste right
I tried the JBL speakers and I have to say - things I cooked in the 1 inch Titanium tweeter tastest wierd. Other than that they are pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too Loud, Even for me!
I have a bit of a problem with this speaker, it really is TOO loud. No joke, the sound is overbearing, and when you're listening to something low Fidelity like tv or a tape, the hiss produced by this extremely sensitive center gets anoying. Will distort at extremely high volumes with extremely powerful amps (such as my 550w yamaha) but at that point, it is too loud to hear anything more then the tearing of your eardrums. Buy this speaker only if you have high end front and rear speakers, or else you won't be able to hear them ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The JBL S312BE is a three-way floor-standing loudspeaker. Technical specifications include 35 to 20,000 Hz frequency response, 8-ohm nominal impedance, 92 dB sensitivity, and 250-watt power handling. The 1-inch pure titanium tweeter and the 4-inch midrange transducer are mounted on a Linear Field Proximity (LFP) bezel that ensures a seamless transition between the middle and high frequencies. The 12-inch PolyPlas (polymer-coated cellulose fiber) woofer is built on a cast aluminum frame, which reduces distortion and increases power-handling capability.

Shielded components permit distortion-free placement near video monitors. High-temperature, oversized Kapton voice coils and HeatScape motor structures allow this speaker to play all types of movies and music. A low-diffraction IsoPower baffle directs the sound power into the room, reducing distortion caused by cabinet vibration. The computer-designed enclosure requires no internal bracing. The FreeFlow flared port increases bass response while adding no unwanted port noise. As is true with all JBL Studio Series loudspeakers, the JBL S312 speakers are equipped with all-metal, five-way, gold-plated binding-post speaker terminals. This model comes in beech and includes a two-year parts and labor warranty on the speaker enclosure and a five-year parts and labor warranty on the speaker driver and internal components. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SPEAKER AMZON HAS TO OFFER
Unlike its little brother, the JBL S310, which is a great speaker, JBL really turned it up a level producing the high-quality, d.j.PROFESSIONAL JBL S312BE STUDIO SERIES. THIS PUTS
OUT 250 WATTS, LIKE ITS YOUNGER BROTHER, BUT MADE THE BASS 2"
LARGER, ALL BUILT WITHIN A CABINET THAT STAYS STILL AT PEAK LEVELS OF PERFORMANCES! THE HIGHS, MIDRANGE, AND BASS JUST POUND OUT SUPERB QUALITY MUSIC. The price one would need to pay
for a comparable speaker, would be hundreds more, and gain very

little quality over these monsters! Serious about music and its quality? The JBL S312 STUDIO SERIES HAS IT ALL!

5-0 out of 5 stars customer service
Speakers sounded clear with deep bass.Blew tweeter before first year was up ,have a relativly high powered system (within rec specs). After placing order 4 months ago I am still waiting for part from jbl.Owned several types of jbl's including L100Ts and s -412's and loved them all.FOLLOW UP-for do it your selfers when ordering a replacement part from jbl a copy of the reciept is needed.after misunderstanding on my part cleared up customer service was outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Speakers with plenty of power to spare!
Not only do I own a pair of these great speakers, but I also decided to build my home theater system around them. I have the S38's for surround, the S-Center speaker and not one but two PB12 subwoofers (I like a lot of bass)! Action, science fiction and horror movies are truly brought to life with these speakers. My CD collection has never sounded better. I have a Sony receiver rated at 120 watts per channel and so far I have not been able to turn it up even half way, that's how efficient these speakers are! So, if you want to rock the floors and walls, put a permanent smile on your face, and put a frown on your neighbors faces, check these speakers out, you will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loud & Clean
If you love music loud and clean, you need to audition these. I have listened to many speakers in my time and, in my opinion, you would be hardpressed to find a better performer for the money. I listen to a variety of types of music and I'm never disappointed in these speakers. Played through a 50wpc tube amp and coupled with a PSW 12 sub, the sound is so good that I hear things on my CD's I haven't heard before. And my old speakers are on the famous Stereophile Recommended Components list. I did notice that a bookshelf speaker in this Studio Series is already recommended by Stereophile as well, so that should be an indication that this is a serious speaker. Do not confuse this series with some others in the JBL line. The Studio Series is for real.

5-0 out of 5 stars JBL is back
This is JBL's first offering worth purchasing since my old L100's. Buy a pair ... and put them up against anything in the .... You also get plenty of lows without purchasing a sub. They really perform after about 40 hours of break in. Reverse one of the leads, face the pair together, throw a blanket over them and give them a couple to three days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pricing criteria
I was looking at the price of floor standing speakers, the JBL Northridge N38s in particular and I noticed that you claim to sell for $199.99 as opposed to a list price of $230+ . I checked out Bestbuy and Ciruit city web sites and they sell for the exact same price at both these locations. So who's list price are you underselling? Also, if I was to buy from you, I'd pay the same cost, a hefty shipping fee and have to wait 4-10 days for delivery. If I buy from the others, I get instant delivery and zero shipping costs. So what is the advantage of buying from Amazon? Just curious.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Year of the Double Christmas
I know I can't talk too much about religion here, but I'm gonna. I'm a Buddhist/Hindu, but I don't attend any worshipping. I grew up a Christian, so that's why I get the occasional Christmas present. Alright, last year atChristmas, I received two of these amazing speakers, and a CD from one ofmy favorite bands (Fear Factory). It just so happens that Fear Factory area very brutally heavy electro-metal band, and this was a remix CD, so everytrack rocked extra hard. I live in a condo, so everyone else around me wasjust getting up. I plugged these in and whacked "Fear is theMindkiller" on at top volume. In an instant, people were at my doorcomplaining. I told them I'd turn it down, and I did. One notch. I playedit the whole day long. My other five presents were opened the next day. Oneof them was another Fear Factory CD. Anytime you want to annoy yourneighbors or are missing a concert in a neighboring city (that doesn'thappen to me because I live in L.A.) pop something on with these speakers.I've been in many recording studios, and these speakers surpass even someof their sound by a lot. The bass is also amazing, only without too muchthumping. They look pretty swanky, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a product!
The design is very home (or professional) theater oriented. The sound is SOOOO GOOD! I mean these guys actually make the speaker systems you go to the movies to hear movies from.

The S310s equal outstanding imaging, dynamics, and good looks. They actually look better in person than they do in the picture above and they look great in that picture! You could spend MUCH more - but why? These speakers have great bass (but never sound boomy). I bought 5 of them so I could have equal sound in my DD 5.1 / DTS home theater setup. It really has made a difference, as there is much (directional) bass and midrange coming from behind and especially from the all-important center.

CD's sound great (never harsh - just wide-open and free). Use with or sans grills they look cool either way. I've loved (and bought into) JBL's cool approach to speaker design since the 60's. They went through a couple of decades of so-so home systems. However, JBL is back in action with these speakers and they are the BEST I've ever owned. I guess I like 'em - huh?

BTW, The XBOX rocks through these gems!

5-0 out of 5 stars Studio speakers for Home Theater too.
I purchased these speakers along with the Studio Series Center channel speaker for my home system.I was looking for a speaker that would sound greatwhen I was listening to music but wouldn't lack in performance when used in a home theater setting. These speakers have handled everythingfrom Heavy Metal to Classical & from Life is Beautiful to Armaggedonand I couldn't be happier with them.If you are looking for a speaker thatcan handle these types of applications then look no further.Of course youcould always go and spend more on speakers but at this price point there isno equal in my mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great System
Bought this sytem at a great price from a local retail chain in chicago. Got it home and loved putting it together. The sound is incredible. The unit is sleek and very stylish. The remote made my friends jealous. The only complaint that I have is that the spaker wire is too short and those freaky clips at the ends make it impossible to fine replacement cable. I also wanted to find the speaker stands. Called JBL and they couldn't give me any info. I would give this sytem a 5 because it is so great but I have to give it a 4 because of that really short speaker wire, accesories being impossible to locate, and lousy JBL customer service.

4-0 out of 5 stars very compact
I really like this set up for how inconspicuous it is. The speakers sound solid. The only problem with mine is the cd player spindle is out of alignment and some cd's will actually scrape against the player's plastic chassis as they play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great item
We got this for our master bedroom. To our surprise we thought we were in the entertainment room. Great sound. Easy to setup. User Friendly. The remote is credit card thin which we really like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product, extremely poor service from JBL
This is a very good product with room filling sound (25x13 feet) and very attractive appearance. The surround sound works very well with DVD movies. Actual use of the product is very smooth and with a little work, everything can hide from the view. It is an excellent value for the money.

Problems: The speaker wires use moulded fittings that make the setup a snap. According to the manual the three front speaker wires were supposed to be 20' in length but in reality they are barely 10' if that.

Attempting to contact JBL customer service proved to be a challenge. Long que times, que drops and more frustrating of them all, when finally a person answers the call, they are extraordinarily useless. I spoke with three people, one at a supervisory level, at least six times and sent four email messages to get the extension cords they promissed for the speakers. After waiting for over one month, I cut the speaker wires and spliced good quality wire in the middle to make them reach where I wanted. If you need longer cables, do this and save yourself some time.

Don't bother to call JBL. You will get only frustration

However, you will not regret buying the product, highly recommend it.

Amazon.com Review

With JBL's reputation for quality professional audio gear, one wouldexpect to find exceptional engineering in the company's consumer electronics, and its new SoundGear compact stereos do not disappoint. At first glance, thesleek, dark silver and blue-gray SG3030 looks more like a glorified boombox thana serious minisystem. But JBL's SoundGear series takes off with the SG3030 andSG2020, soaring on the strengthof the company's craft and technology and delivering products that rank with thebest in affordable, compact stereos for home, school, or office use.

The SG3030's basics include an AM/FM tuner with 30 presets, a three-CD changer, and dual cassette decks with high-speed dubbing. There are three presetequalization settings (rock, pop, and classical) and bass boost, a clock displaywith alarm, and a handy remote control. Extras include features like VMAxvirtual surround sound processing, RDS (Radio Data System), and an unusuallyrich array of inputs and outputs.

VMAx, proprietary technology from JBL's parent company, Harman International, simulates surround sound from either stereo signals or Dolby Pro Logic-encodedtwo-channel sources (like VHS tape or many TV audio signals). This virtualsurround sound can be very amusing and at times quite effective, particularlywith sports events and movies. (A critical ear can decipher in VMAx some bassand treble boosting and a considerable amount of reverb to convey large-roomambience.) The way VMAx widens the perceived audio "image" from the speakers isdefinitely exciting, but we prefer the more traditional two-channel stereo whenlistening to music.

The SG3030 also supports a current trend in FM radio: RDS (Radio Data System).RDS is inaudible information carried in the frequency-modulated (FM) audiostream and appears as text in the SoundGear display panel, providing detailssuch as station identification, traffic details, and weather.

If you're so inclined, you can make this shelf system the foundation of a largerhome entertainment setup. Front-panel analog stereo inputs are useful fortemporary external hookups, such as an MP3 player, minidisc player, videocamera, or gaming console. You can connect more permanent components like a VCRor even a DVD player's analog outputs through rear-panel jacks.

Besides these inputs, an optical digital-audio output sits on the face of theunit, again for temporary connections, while a coaxial digital output for morepermanent connections (as to your component CD recorder) is located at theback.

You can add a powered subwoofer to this system by way of its dedicated subwooferoutput jack. However, a subwoofer may eclipse the powerful speaker output; wefound that the bass boost and equalization settings provide more than adequatelow-end reinforcement.

Despite its almost playful cosmetic design, the SG3030 clearly isn't kiddingaround when it comes to sound. JBL rates the frequency range as 40 to 20,000 Hz,and our listening definitely confirmed impressive extensions in both high andlow frequencies. Each three-way, biamplified speaker features a 6.5-inchPolyPlas (polymer-coated cellulose fiber) woofer with rubber surround, a 3-inchPolyPlas midrange driver with rubber surround, and a 0.5-inch titanium-laminatedome tweeter. And while its cyber-age design does compromises the logicalplacement of its controls, we seldom used the front-panel buttons, since thehand-held remote control is so compact and easy to use.

According to the manual, this system can withstand sound pressure levels (SPLs)up to 108 dB--and we don't doubt it. It would take quite a beating to unsettlethe durable rubber surrounds (which join the speaker cones to the enclosure).

Of course, the most important question is: how does this system sound? Withoutthe equalization or bass boost engaged, the low end lacks heft, and the high end(treble) sounds overly pronounced. Fortunately, the three preset equalizationcurves and bass enhancement all serve to even things out, and the system's highpower maintains full-bodied sound and low distortion at all listening levels. With the superboost engaged (enhancing treble and bass) and at a fairly loud 95dB SPL, the SG3030 showed no signs of breakup and produced a thick musicalambience.

The SG3030 offers multiformat compatibility, interesting features, and excellentsound quality at a very reasonable price. --Zoe Knight

5-0 out of 5 stars " Magnificent "
I just purchased a jbl sound gear system. I think its the best audio system I ever had. I really wanted the 3030 sound gear system but the 2020 was the only one available. It's very potent and you get a real bang for the bucks that you spend to acquire it. If you are looking for a stereo mini system the jbl sound gear is the only way to go!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars you can't get much better than this in a mini-system.
let me began by introducing myself, i'm a professional sound board engineer/operator working at several theaters in the bay area (cmtsj and scp) and also at great america as the sound board operator for their scooby doo show. so i have a lot of experience in the professional sound field. now on to this system. if you look at the specifics you will find that this jbl system completely dominates any other system in it's price range. first of all look at the frequency response. in this system it is fairly level and doesn't have any large "peaks" or "dips" while every other system in it's price range does (having a "flat" freq. response is a good thing). while some people might complain it is lacking in the bass notes they simply are hearing them normally. unlike other systems the soundgear 3030 doesn't have one note "boominess" which makes the bass only seem louder. next the speakers are bi-amplified, this means that there are two amp channels per speaker instead of one. this allows complicated processing to take place before the amplifier sends the signal to the speaker and thus improves the quality of the sound. also this system is truly a three-way system and does not have a high range driver (speaker), which just looks pretty and doesn't do anything. another nice feature is it's dual alarms. if you're a heavy sleeper (like me) you'll appreciate not only two alarms but also having them at different volume levels. i could go on for hours about the soundgear 3030 but this are it's main highlights. i've had this system for over a month now and have never had a single thing go wrong. while the buttons may be confusing at first you quickly adjust to them. in short, if you are looking at a new mini-system get this one, you won't be disappointed and if you don't believe head to your local electronics' store and listen to it yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality system, great price
There are plenty of shelf systems out there, and sound is often in the eye of the beholder. That being said, I am very happy with this system. The midrange is excellent and the CD player and rotary system work quickly and quietly. The system also abounds in easy-to-use features including the virtual surround sound "VMAX" which is absolutely incredible. The treble is a bit much without the boost and equalization, but that problem was solved when I hooked up a powered subwoofer. I also have an issue with the radio reception, which was poor. You're getting quality without a bunch of unnecessary kitsch and flash that most brands resort to. Definitely reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome system
I've had this system for two days and I am totally satisfied with it. After listening to dozens of other mini systems in the 200-300 dollar price range,I couldn't find one that sounded really good. Then I came across this system while searching on the internet, and after reading the reviews I decided to go ahead and buy it.It is by far the best mini system out there. It looks and sounds awesome. The bass is deep and the treble is crystal clear.Even when you turn it up all the way, there is little distortion in the bass and almost none with the mids and hi's.The speakers are enclosed in wooden boxes instead of those cheap sounding plastic ones that most mini systems have.I would recommend the JBL Soundgear 3030 to anyone looking for the best mini system out on the market.JBL has done it again.5 out 0f 5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Shelf System
I bought this shelf system off of Amazon a couple days ago. I am completly satisfied with it. It was easy to set up and i had it working in right after i opened it up. As for the sound, it is the best sounding mini-system I have heard, and I looked at a lot of them. I turned the speakers up almost all the way and they were not even distorting. The bass boost is awesome, it shook my floors when I had it half-way up. I would strongly recomend buying this system if you are looking for one, it is worth the extra money. ... Read more
