5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this opportunity!!
I have long been a fan of JBL speakers and have waited too long to splurge on decent speakers. (I wanted to buy the L100's in 1980 but did not have the cash!!) The S412PII speakers arrived today after a several week wait, but it sure was worth the wait. You will need help bringing them in at 100 pounds each!! Amazon's offer for these speakers with no sales tax and no shipping make this a deal that any audiophile should not pass on. Compare these speakers to any other speaker under $5k with the built in powered sub and you will not be dissappointed. Your only dissappointment will be in waiting, check JBL's website and you will not see these because they are being disscontinued. So act fast. These speakers will really rock the house or sound incredible at low levels. Do yourself another favor, when you order, get the Eagles When Hell Freezes over DVD, sit back, open a cold one and enjoy.

Amazon.com Product Description

Get the most from a DVD player and audio/video receiver with this full-range surround-sound speaker system from JBL. The four satellite speakers (left/right front and surround) and center-channel speaker fill a room with sound, while the 150-watt powered subwoofer rounds out the bottom end, delivering the floor-shaking bass supplied by a program's low-frequency-effects channel (the ".1" in a 5.1-channel presentation).

All speakers are video shielded to allow distortion-free placement on or around a television, and the satellite speakers may be mounted on stands, shelves, or the wall. JBL recommends powering the satellites with 10 to 100 watts per channel--that's enough to enjoy exciting home-theater sound (but those seeking bigger thrills will want larger amplifiers and heavier-duty speakers).

Each satellite (and the center channel) houses two 3-inch drivers and half-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeters, and the ported subwoofer uses a large, 10-inch woofer for bass reaching down to around 30 Hz.

What's in the Box
Four satellite speakers, one center-channel speaker with adjustable support leg, one subwoofer, four sets of wall-mounting brackets, user's manual, two 20-foot speaker cables (for connection from receiver to subwoofer), three 40-foot speaker cables (for connection from receiver to left and right rear satellites and center speaker), two 15-foot speaker cables (for connection from subwoofer to front speakers). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I was iniatially sceptical of the sound quality considerning the price, but after comparing with more expensive JAMO , KEF, ONKYO, YAMAHA speakers I was totally seduced by the quality of these speakers. This truly deserves all 5 stars. I am already awaiting for my 2nd set for the office!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
I put this system in my living room which is about 300 square feet and these speakers are ridiculous. The brick mortar in my condo literally flakes off the surface from the bass. The surround is awesome and you have to be pretty into music to say that the highs are lacking. I listen to music with the system and have absolutely no complaints. I recommend it to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Sound!!
I wanted nice sound at an affordable price. I asked for a recommendation from a family member who designs and installs home theaters. They highly recommended JBL. I didn't think I could touch the price of a JBL speaker system. And when I saw the SCS150 system I was perhaps a little skeptical as to whether I was getting a bottom of the line system from JBL. I can tell you that they are absolutely fantastic! And what does that family member think who deals with home theater every day, you may wonder? They share the same view. Don't be afraid of this system, you'll be extremely happy if you want superb sound at an affordable price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Movies, but ...
When it comes to movies, these speakers are amazing. Like being in a theatre all by yourself. You can hear every word clearly through the centre speaker, and the subwoofer can shake the house if you're not careful.

However, it is less than amazing for music, as it is deficient in the tweeter category, so your treble gets lost.

Movie buffs and gamers can rejoice - music fans won't be ecstatically happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended speakers
I just installed these speakers and I'm really amazed at the quality of the sound in comparison to the price. I have a 20' by 20' living area and I think these speakers are just perfect for filling the room with sound. The subwoofer is especially good (my 17 year old loves it turnedfull up!). I highly recommend this product. ... Read more

JBL must have learned a few things after producing a fine 250 watt speaker. It sounds great and compares very well with most speakers in its price range. JBL found the answer with a better equipped speaker well with-in the buyers price range, yet
having stronger and better capabilities...the JBL S312 Studio Series model. The S310 II BE has a 10" woofer, they decided to upgrade thier product to an outstanding level of sound quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome sound, DVD player could use work
As was said in the other reviews here, the sound is amazing on this HTIAB (Home Theater in a Box). I doubt you can get better, even with the higher priced systems from Bose. Throw in a DVD with lots of action (like Band of Brothers!) and you feel like you're right in the battle with the characters :) The DVD player on the other hand could use some work. I've had problems with a few mainstream DVDs, such as Monsters Inc, where you cannot select any options from the menu at all. You are limited to watching only the movie on a dvd with soo many cool extras :( I have tried MP3 cds, which work great - the directory structure is displayed on the screen! SO much better than other DVD players where you have to guess where your songs are on the disc. The remote takes some getting used to, because the buttons are not layed out the same as most remotes, and you have to be well lined up with the reciever to get the remote to actually 'send'. Still, it works well, and you can control everything from the remote.

So overall:

Sound: 5 stars! (or more!)
DVD player: 4 stars (plays almost anything)
Remote: 4 stars (takes some getting used to)

One last note: Make sure you are getting the JBL ProPack II, I have read that the original has some problems with playing MP3 discs and CDRs. The ProPack II also adds a 6-channel input on the reciever. You can tell the difference by the look of the reciever. The original ProPack has three knobs under the huge volume knob while the ProPack II does not. Also, the original only has one button on the left side of the DVD player for power, while the ProPack II has two buttons there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
Dont walk, run to buy this system. Will rival many audiophile high end Stereos. Worth the price for the tuner alone. Dollar for Dollar superior to Bose. Professional design with unique extra features. No audible distortionat high volumes. I beleive this is the most powerful and clean consumer amp. Ive ever heard. JBL supplies half of all recording studios. No better THIB,not by a long shot. Im hearing things on old analog recordings, unheard before. Color coded wiring and inputs make this the easiest system to assemble to date. Quite frankly, JBL didnt "dumbdown" for the home theatre market. The solid, Heavy constructionmakes this a keeper for many years. You can feel confident its equally a stereo and Home Theatre system...But dont tell JBL. Another nice thing is the absence of stupid, glitzy featuresthat never get used, and only distractfrom the real issue. Power. 500 wattsAmazing System.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional value - Excellent sound
If you want to jump into home theater in one simple purchase, this is the system for you. The separate components work beautifully together and also allow for future upgrades should you ever choose. But it's unlikely that you'll outgrow this package anytime soon. It packs a whooping 600Watts...5x100W for the satellite speakers and a 100W powered subwoofer that's absolutely potent! It fills a large room very well (16'x16'), with power to spare. (It's all about the speaker placement.) It plays well loudly, but moderate levels sound the best. The DVD/CD player holds five disks and offers component hook ups. (If available on your television.) The box only includes the composite video cable however. Buying a component cable will set you back another 50 dollars, but worth the price. The DVD player produces crisp pictures and includes plenty of bells and whistles. The receiver has twelve preset surround sound modes including DTS/Dolby Digital/Pro Logic/Logic 7/etc. Plays CD/CD-RW/VCD/DVD, but not CD-R/MP3. Delay capabilities and adjustable output levels allow you to adjust for varying speaker placements within the room. Speaking of speakers, these little satellites are virtually invisible...only 4.5 inches in height. But paired with the subwoofer, they produce excellent sound. The drawbacks? The remote can be confusing and uncomfortable for big hands to handle and the separate components are huge. (Roughly 17Wx17Dx12H when stacked.) Word of advice...check out JBL's website for a list of their licensed internet dealers and check out their prices first. A product warranty won't be honored if you purchase any JBL product from an unlicensed distributor.

5-0 out of 5 stars This System is the BEST
This is a great system. Sound from the speakers is incredible. Had a Yamaha System before I picked this one up and it totally blows the Yamaha away. Recently watched SwordFish and some scenes actually made my walls shake and the volume wasn't even at half. Setup is simple...Do yourself a favor and get this system, you won't be sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Altec Lansing Computer Speakers Have Better Sound
The overall package is good. It lacks some mid-range sound. I also starve for more bass. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Sub!!!!
This sub not only did it fill my need for extra bass, it killed it!This sub delivers extremely high quality bass for anything (music, DVDs etc...)I give it a full 4 stars. And I plan to get another

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Sub when it is workin but ...
For the money, this is a really good sub and easily worthy of 4-5 stars. I was completely satisfied with it for 14 months until it self-destructed and therefore must rate it so lowly. I suggest anyone interested in buying this sub read the comments posted in audioreview.com to see the problems this sub will give you. Many people have reported the same problem. The cost to fix is approx $150 and JBL is no help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the rumble - but watch for trouble!
Finally, the last speaker of my 5.1 setup! So I pop in the "Blade" DVD -- the added bass from this subwoofer sounded wonderful, and definitely brought a smile to my face. HOWEVER, about 30 minutes in the movie, it died! Kaput. So, off to the repair shop I go (JBL's warranty covered it completely), to discover that there was a bad diode. It was replaced, and once again I am smiling. It sounds great with bass heavy CD's as well, though the front firing speaker is a bit more directional than I would like. Overall (and after the repair), good speaker!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome if anything like the PSWD110
Now I`ve recently purchased the smaller version of this speaker the PSWD110 and I`m so satisfied that I had to put my add my input.Power handling, great depth, with plenty of room to spare. It just takes all the juice I give it when listening to R&B,rap, light jazz, reggae,& I am equally pleased when watching the family`s favorite movies.Anyone fallen asleep is sure to wake up when the bomb drops, or when the gun scene starts. So I know the big brother of my D110 has to be satisfying to it`s customers.Enjoy just as I do & Happy Bass`in.

5-0 out of 5 stars This stuff makes me shake, but my neighboors hate.
Well, I did like purchase this sub because it really makes me feel involved by its sound. In dance music (i.e. Venga Boys) all bass is relly strong and in classical music it reproduces the deep sounds in a very sutil way. Unfurnetly I don't have a DVD yet to feel how it will works, but I'm sure it will not disappoint me. It is not expensive, and works very well. It is a good shopping. One thing I don't know why is some chemical smell which I feel from it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The stately S412P floorstanding loudspeaker is the flagship model in JBL's Studio series (available in beech as well as black). JBL arms this four-way, full-range speaker with a 12-inch, 200-watt powered woofer and dedicated LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This LFE input obviates the need for a separate subwoofer for home theater or music listening, especially with programs recorded in 5.1-channel surround formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Remember, though--you'll need to plug the speaker into an AC outlet to appreciate the onboard amplification.

The S412P also features a stunning 92 dB sensitivity for uncommonly loud, dynamic performance with almost any amplifier. Use two for stereo or up to five for multichannel applications (though center-channel placement would almost preclude the use of a television).

Much of what you're paying for here is the powered-woofer component, which alone is worth its weight in bass-chuffing DVDs. However, the S412P also boasts myriad design benefits, including PolyPlas speaker cones, an Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguide, a Linear Field Proximity (LPF) bezel, Straight-line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks, and a FreeFlow flared bass port.

PolyPlas, a polymer-coated cellulose fiber, adds rigidity and damping to a cone without unduly increasing its mass. This cone, together with a durable rubber surround (the part of the cone that attaches to the rest of the speaker), enables the speaker to deliver high sound levels without breakup or distortion--and the S412P can play stunningly loud and distortion-free. If you're listening loud enough to distort this speaker, you should probably be more worried for your hearing than your stereo.

The S412P's driver complement consists of three PolyPlas-cone drivers (with diameters of 12, 6, and 4 inches) and a 1-inch pure-titanium tweeter. All are magnetically shielded to prevent image distortion when you place them near a TV.

The pure-titanium tweeter uses JBL's patented EOS waveguide to focus the sonic image and reduce time-delay artifacts. The EOS waveguide also increases the tweeter's dynamic range and its output at lower frequencies, which improves the transition between the high frequencies and the midrange. The LFP (Linear Field Proximity) bezel, which houses both the tweeter and the 4-inch midrange driver, smoothes out that transition even further. By minimizing the distance between these critical sound sources, JBL sidesteps the phase problems that result from sounds meeting your ears with different arrival times.

JBL's custom-designed drivers allow it to use simple, Straight-line Signal Path (SSP) crossover networks with quality electrical components. These networks further smooth the speaker's frequency and power response while minimizing processing that could otherwise degrade your audio signal. JBL built the S412P's woofers into cast-aluminum frames, which--because of their solidity--reduce distortion and increase power-handling capability over stamped steel frames.

On the inside, the drivers' oversized Kapton voice coils and HeatScape motor structures preserve performance accuracy during extended listening, prolong driver life, and reduce power compression through their responsiveness. Finally, JBL's FreeFlow flared bass port releases bass energy from behind the 12-inch woofer through a vent that precisely matches the size and configuration of the driver and speaker cabinet.

The sound on this speaker is clear, detailed, and punchy. If you like to play your music and movies loud, this is the speaker for you. It sounds good at low levels, but we found that it sounded better the louder we cranked it--especially when we fed the speaker a low-frequency (subwoofer) output from our amplifier. For best results you'll want to listen no closer than 10 feet, on average; close listening tips the S412P's frequency balance too far to the bright side for our tastes.

When it's positioned well, the S412P packs one heck of a wallop. The onboard amplifier deepens the bass response to an impressive 32 Hz, producing the cinematic low frequencies while freeing your surround receiver or amplifier from the intense demands of dynamic bass reproduction. The bass may not be quite as tight or well defined as in good sealed-enclosure speakers, but at this price we're not complaining.

If your space and budget allow, the JBL S412P makes a stunning addition to any home theater or stereo system.

Pros:

  • Clear, powerful sound
  • Natural frequency balance
  • Plays very loud without distortion
  • Great bass response

Cons:

  • Bass not as tight as good sealed-enclosure speakers

4-0 out of 5 stars A good home theater speaker
I've had these speakers for about 7 months now. These speakers sound the best in a large room with vaulted ceilings, or in a room that doesn't readily absorb the sound as easily. The reason being - they're a tad bit bright and forward sounding. I've tried these speakers in conjunction with 4 different amps - 2 hifi, and 2 Home theater amps, and tested them in 3 different homes with different accoustical properties.

Here's what's good about them - a great-sounding mid-range - female vocals sound astonishingly good. Also these speakers have the ability to effortlessly deliver loads of sound. Bass is good, even without the subs running. You get a flat (even)tonal response without the subs running, which is good. You get a drastic increase in bass output by activating the built-in subs. If you don't run a line-in to the subs portion, the sub-range will run passively through the speaker wire (down to 35 HZ), and the sound will still be good-sounding and even. Therefore, unless you're an absolute bass junky, I would recommend saving your money and getting speakers without the built-in subs. If you would like to activate the built-in subs in conjunction with a standard stereo amp (with no LFO, sub-out), you can run line from your pre-outs to the sub line-ins as long as you purchase an external low-pass crossover to place in it's path. There is no crossover built-in to the active sub, since it assumes this speaker will be used for Home Theater applications primarily.

Weaknesses - no built-in low-pass crossover for active subs, but easily remedied by purchasing one and adding it on yourself (only for those using a standard stereo amp/receiver). Also, some prefer home theater subs to be positioned out of the cabinet, for more rumbling effect - whatever preferences may be.
Also, this speaker was designed with too many voice cones - could have easily been a 3-way design. However, as JBL knows, there's "marketing crossovers", and somehow people think that more is better, when in reality, it often isn't. Also, these speakers weight close to 90 lbs, and their plastic legs probably won't take too much abuse before they give out. If you have thick carpet, the pegs will completely sink down, effectively negating the effect of the pegs. Also, the front grill is extremely flimsy, which is pretty common these days. Musically, you may have to find non-bright/ non-forward sounding source components, preamp/amps, to make the sound more listenable for extended periods of time, or else find an ambient space in your house for these monsters - because they throw the sound right at you and wear you out otherwise.

This is a great speaker for self-contained HT. Music applications - Does best with rap, R&B, and other bass-heavy music, if you don't want to bother shopping for additional subs.

5-0 out of 5 stars blow the house down!
These speakers are straight out amazing.

First, in response to the 1-star rating below, which says that the bass is "terrible"... that could not be farther from the truth. These speakers use a powered sub-woofer, and if it's not connected to a sub-woofer output, you will not get the sound you're buying. The little red lights at the bottom turn green when the sub-woofers are activated, which will let you know when eveything's working.

Ok, to the review. These statuesque speakers carry all types of music beautifully. From the most crisp, tear jerking choral pieces, to the heaviest bass-blowing techno trance, to Dolby 5.1 soundtracks, these things sound so good it will make the hair on your neck stand up and cheer! And they look awesome- modern and classy with the screens on, or aggressive and mean with the screens removed (but note, the cases are not real wood... they're actually some kind of metallic plating).

These speakers sound really solid at low volumes (maybe a slight bit too bass-heavy for some tastes on account of the sub-woofer which you can EQ out), but once you crank these speakers up... and don't be afraid to turn that dial up half-way or more... you won't believe what you just bought! The highs really come alive at greater volume, and when I say alive I mean "alive"... it sounds like the performers are sitting on your coffe table!

Also, because they do include a powered sub-woofer, this is a great alternative to 5.1 sound for those that don't have the space for all those speakers (like me). You can take full advantage of the .1 Low Frequency channel with these sub-woofers, and let your amp convert the dolby output to stereo output and it will still sound amazing. You may not hear the bullets whiz by your head at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan, but you won't be disappointed when you hear helicopters flying right by your home!

Spend the cash! You'll love them! They're big enough to hug, and make a great design statement in your living room!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I spent the money!
I debated for weeks over whether I really needed new speakers (I'm a practical person with a limited budget) but I decided to splurge and buy these. All I can say is...WOW! I'm really glad I spent the money. I have never heard music or movie soundtracks sound better. I'm listening to each and every CD I own all over again and enjoying every minute of it. This is one of the clearest speakers I have ever heard and the sound is magnificent....smooth, rich and well-defined. If you're thinking of buying these, go for it...you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top speaker for a great price.
I don't understand the 1 star reviews below. Perhaps their speakers were defective in some way. These speakers are seamless and revealing from top to botom with excellent definition and fine balance. The best from JBL so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money at ALL!
I have owned these speakers for a couple months and they sound awful for their price. The Bass is so terrible. If you put a KLH speaker next to it i would pick the KLH. I do not reccomend these speakers at all. Take my word for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best one can do in the price range
Just got these babies this week, it sounded great before I calibrated the whole system. However, after a little tweaking on just the sound level from each speaker, I was able to get superb quality sound from the JBL NSP1 II speaker system. The flow of sound is seamless, you can test it with SW Eps 1, pot race chapter, as well as in LOTR, special extended version. While the bass is not thunderous, it is very respectable coming from a $... system. The mid range is where this system really shines, saxophone sounds just like somebody is playing at your sound stage. The N24s sounds great with male and female vocal. The tweeters were very well made.

This is a great setup for all beginners. I have researched for months and the NSP1 definitely has the best value at the $... range, even $...I'd say. It is comparable, or even better than the Energy Take 5.1. I'd recommend this to everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A musician's ear
I am genuinely pleased with our new pair of JBL S38II speakers. They are compact, smaller than the pair of three ways they are replacing. However, they are solidly built and deceptivey heavy for their size. The sound is rich and pleasing, easily reproducing everything from a cappella jazz vocals to rich symphonic passages. The speakers expose the middle voices and lush tonalities of the orchestra, which are usually lost with lesser speakers. Also, the eight inch woofers have plenty of bass punch that stands up well without need of an additional subwoofer. These are a good bit of speaker for the price and I am pleased the amount I paid. I would hesitate to pay too much more for these speakers though.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love These Speakers!
I auditioned many speakers--looking for a great bookshelf speaker. I have small children and was afraid that a speaker on the floor would abused by the little ones. These JBL speakers sound incredible. I especially like how they produce clear high-frequency sounds--instead of sounding like mush. Also, they reproduce bass so well I don't feel like I need to add a subwoofer. They are extremely well-made and heavy and they have made me a JBL fan. I've had mine for about three years now and couldn't be happier. They are incredible speakers and well worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value!
For the price these are the best sounding speakers I have heard in a long time. Frequency response is great with no dead spots over the entire range. The 8 inch ported woofers give plenty of base response and the mirror image installation provides spectacular imaging even with relativly little speaker seperation, (about 5 feet in my entertainment center).

Power handling is great as well, my 150 watt per channel amp dosen't overpower these babies and the combination of the well constructed heavy cabinets and the self adhesive velcro feet provided with the speakers keep them from rattling on my shelves.

All in all I am very happy with these speakers and would reccomend them to anyone needing a great sounding set of bookshelf speakers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great speakers!!
Speaker size was a consideration for our home theater system since it's in our living/great room. Floor speakers were out of the question. After extensive "listening & research" these handle the range of sounds we needed to cover and fit the space!
These speakers are incredible! We use them as the main front speakers.
We've had them for about a year now and they have excelled in everything WE throw at them. I say we, because I wanted speakers that enhanced our MOVIE experience, but it was essential that my wife could enjoy her MUSIC to it's FULLEST!
These speakers PLEASE us both. Absolutely a GREAT buy!
The only thing I have to figure out is how to sneak a pair of these in as the rear surround speakers.....

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SPEAKERS!!
My husband shopped (forever)to put together our home theater system & these are our front speakers (the other speakers are JBL also). We both enjoy watching movies, but I REALLY enjoy cranking up the tunes! THESE SPEAKERS ARE GREAT!
Most men don't shop with the focus and stamina that my husband does(which can be trying at times) but in this case I'm glad he did! These speakers really handle "his" movies and "my" music better than I expected. The nice thing is I don't have some MONSTER floor speakers in my living room to deal with.
I just tell him "you did good and we don't NEED anything else, honey". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars College listener
As college student with no money, I still look for the best sound I can find for my music. These speakers are superb for a small dorms. When paired with at least 100 watts these will pound out enough bass to shake your walls but will not lose any tonal quality. JBL has done a great job on presenting consumers with a economical choice for sound. Over all I would recomemd these to any college student that wants to improve the sonic quality of the dorm room.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like its little brother too
Actually I have a pair of HLS 410's. And I would like to point out that they are awesome too. I was going to buy the 610's but I liked the small footprint of the 410's. The 410's are the size of most boombox speakers, but sound 1000 times as good. I was astonished by the incredibly tight bass that was produced by just a 3.5 inch woofer. And the tweeter is the same one that is used in some of JBL's premier tower speakers, so the overall sound quality is incredible. Remember that I am talking about the 410's, which are the entry level of the HLS series; It only gets better.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SOUND FOR THE PRICE
I ALREADY HAD A PAIR OF THESE SPEAKER, NOW I'M GOING TO BUY ONE MORE......ANY QUESTION?

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD SOUND FOR PRICE
These speakers have a good sound to them considering their price. Their highs and mids are nice and punchy, but the bass is average. The clarity is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars JBL Bookshelf Speakers are the way to go
I was looking into a home theater system and came accross these speakers and decided to give them a try. I was uneasy about choosing bookshelf speakers as opposed to floor speakers because I didn't know if they could pick up the low end enough, so i also purchased a 10" JBL sub-woofer. They sound great. This was my first experence with JBL speakers and since I have equipied the rest of my home theater system with JBL speakers. I would recomend these speakers for anyone who likes to listen to their music or movies loud enough that they can feel them. Thats really where these speakers out preform the rest. I would love to answer any quesitions that anyone has reguarding either these speakers or their home theater system. ... Read more
