Amazon.com Review

JBL has been building speakers for the world's theaters, concert halls, and recording studios for over 50 years. Its achievements and customer satisfaction have earned the company a 70-percent share of the professional loudspeaker market. Of course, JBL builds speakers for the home, too, and a great deal of JBL's pro technology makes its way into the Northridge series.

All Northridge models use 0.75-inch titanium-laminate dome tweeters aswell as woofers made of JBL's trademark PolyPlas (a polymer-coated cellulose fiber). The drivers boast oversized Kapton voice coils and HeatScape motor structures, which give the innards a high tolerance for heat. Translation: the speakers will handle a fair amount of amplifier power. Within each speaker, these drivers are optimized for their respective frequency bands by JBL's Straight-Line Signal Path crossover networks. Traditionally, the purer the signal path, the better the sound, and this maxim seems borne out by the N26 bookshelf model.

You can mount the modestly sized N26s on a wall, either vertically or horizontally, using JBL's optional wall-mount brackets. If you want to place your N26s on a bookshelf, a small support stand unfolds from the bottom of the speaker, and JBL provides adhesive-backed nonskid pads to increase stability.

The N26s' deep-gray cabinet has been molded with a bow-shaped back; the resultant asymmetrical enclosure helps prevent the buildup of internal standing waves. (Standing waves are sound waves that interfere with one another, resulting in too-loud or too-quiet sound at various frequencies.)

The knitted cloths over the grilles perfectly match the cabinet color, creating a warm and friendly look that's attractive in a functional, no-nonsense sort of way. Removing the grilles reveals the titanium-laminate tweeters, the 6-inch woofers (dyed silver to match the tweeters), and JBLs FreeFlow ports, which are flared to avoid the port noise, or "chuffing," that colors the sound of many vented cabinets.

We were pleased to see JBL uses real five-way binding posts for speaker terminals, as opposed to the cheaper spring-loaded terminals found on countless other moderately priced speakers. Five-way posts not only make a tighter, more sure connection, but they also accept spade lugs and banana plugs, thus allowing the use of heavy gauge or specialty speaker wires.

We placed the magnetically shielded N26s on stands to either side of our rear-projection television and proceeded to give them the full sonic-torture test with both music and movies.

Starting with favorite jazz CDs, we were immediately impressed by the naturalness of the N26s' midrange. Pianos, so notoriously difficult to get right, sound surprisingly realistic with the N26 and show off this speaker's natural balance, detail, and harmonic complexity. We also like the N26s' ability to throw a wide soundstage, with well-placed sonic images and a strong sense of three-dimensionality.

Rock music lets them strut like Mick Jagger and reveals an honest bass response down into the 50-to-60 Hz region. We do have a slight criticism: although vocals through the N26s exhibit excellent overall balance, they sometimes sound a tad veiled or diminished in presence. On the other hand, with classical CDs, we love the nuance, texture, and expression of a solo cello flowing from the speakers, while with symphonic music, these speakers show a combination of refinement and power.

DVD movies and music videos are even more fun to listen to. We put the N26s in "phantom" center mode to get a sense of home theater through just this pair of speakers, along with another pair for surround sound. In this four-channel configuration the N26s proved especially adept at reproducing movie soundtracks. Dialogue was clear and easy to understand, and dynamics were fairly explosive with moderate amplifier power. Surround details were abundant; these speakers produce a well-integrated and expansive sonic panorama.

The N26s have a lot going for them. Their inherent neutrality, detail, and dynamic range are the hallmarks that have made JBL so successful in the professional audio world. --Wayne Garcia

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent small room speakers, amazing sound!
These speakers are AMAZING!!! I have it hooked up to my mini-system, and they produce some of the best sound I have ever heard in a speaker. They are the equivelent to the floorstanding JBL's I have in my living room for a bedroom. I was shocked at the sound they put out for their small size. The highs, mids, and lows are all great on this speaker. I would recommend them to anyone, this is a great deal!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highflyer46
I recently bought the N26's to replace JBL's N24's. I am totally impressed with the sound and performance of these speakers. I use them as rear speakers for surround sound. The clarity is outstanding by far. Wouldn't recommend them for the front speakers, but outstanding for the rear! Great price for such a great deal. Kinda hard to find a place to sit them unless you acctually have a bookcase behind you. It is a must to buy speaker stand or a heavy duty wall bracket. Good luck and good listening!

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect speaker for a high end home theater system
I wouldn't insult my ears by using these speakers as my sole sound output device, mostly couse I've gone all but deaf from their big brothers the N-Center and the N-310's, they do on the other hand make great rears for them...They do (when I shut off the other 7 speakers) sound awsome, although their small size and High-sensitivity make them hiss at high volumes

5-0 out of 5 stars Rass damn good!
Just bought these speakers, they are bloodclaat wicked.Great for Blasting Marilyn Manson and Reggae, dont need weed to rock myself, these speakers are doing the job. JBL AGAIN 4-EVER! .

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Speakers, Work Great!
I bought these speakers just recently, and they work great!. They have very good bass, and the treble sounds excellent. They are great mid priced speakers, better than all the other mid priced ones. They can go very loud distortion free. I recommend these to everyone. Good price for good speakers. JBL did good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great as part of surround system, fair if used only as pair
As part of JBL's "S" series, these speakers are designed to go with their "S" series center channel speaker, etc..

My experience in playing DVD movies with these S36's as front speakers, and an S series center channel speaker (and a couple generic rear speakers), has been entirely positive; a very natural soundstage is presented when a DVD is pumping out information to all the different channels. I am less impressed by how they perform solo (as a pair that is, without any center channel or surrounds) so will limit my reccomendation to only those who are buying them as part of a multi speaker set up.

Does this mean you should not get these? Depends on how you tend to play back stereo music (from CDs): If you are a purist who chooses to play stereo music through only 2 speakers, these are not the speakers for you (indeed, avoid shelf speakers altogether and get some good floor speakers!). If you're a modern person who tends to engage your receiver's surround processing to force a stereo signal into all the center speaker and surrounds too, then you've got no worries - this seems to be what they are made for. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway: these shelf speakers are better than shelf speakers that use a remote woofer. However, this still doesn't mean they have great bass. They have moderate bass - better than those, but still not competing with floor speakers. Indeed, despite these being great for shelf speakers, after several years of trying different kinds of shelf speakers I've come to the conclusion that there's simply no replacement for good old fashioned floor speakers with huge woofers - if you can afford it, and if you have a large enough room.

But if you are in a smaller apartment and don't have space to waste on floor speakers, and are looking for speakers to be part of a surround system, then these S36 are definately worth considering - particularly at the $... to $... price range they are most often available for. They are remarkably flush - only 5 inches deep, meaning they can even fit on shallow DVD shelves - you don't need actual bookshelves for these, which is why I chose them over JBL's other similarly-prices speakers. I wanted speakers that would not be competing for space. They can also be mounted to the wall - either hung, or on a mount (useful for people intending to use these as rears).

In short these are probably perfect for students-through-thirties who want to build an excellent surround system that doesn't waste space, and want a moderate amount of bass (more than many shelf units, but not as much as floor units).

5-0 out of 5 stars JBLS36II 3-way 6" wall speaker
I bought the S36II to replace CSW'sdipole surround speakers, because,Ineeded more bass in the rear soundstage and these JBL's, with there 6"woofers,fills in that missing back low frequency, along with thereexellent mid and high's.I am intoDVD-AUDIO and needed speakers thatcan handle full range music.I haveJBL's S38II's up front with the S-Center and on the rear wall,N-26's.The sound is now complete, all around.I can highly recommend the S36II'salong with the rest of the Studioseries I mentioned. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The JBL S312 is a 3-way, 12-inch floor-standing single loudspeaker with medium-density fiberboard (MDF) enclosure and Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) wave guide. Technical specifications include a balanced and nearly full-range (35 to 20,000 Hz) frequency response, 8 ohms nominal impedance, 92 dB sensitivity, and 250-watt power handling. The 1-inch pure titanium tweeter and the 4-inch midrange transducer are mounted on a Linear Field Proximity (LFP) bezel that insures a seamless transition between the middle and high frequencies. The 12-inch PolyPlas (polymer-coated cellulose fiber) cone woofer is built on a cast aluminum frame, which reduces distortion and increases power-handling capability.

Shielded components allow distortion-free placement near video monitors. A high-temperature, oversized Kapton voice coil and HeatScape motor structure allow these speakers to play all types of movies and music. A low-diffraction IsoPower baffle directs the sound power into the room, reducing any distortion caused by cabinet vibration. The computer-designed enclosure requires no bracing. The FreeFlow flared port increases bass response without adding unwanted port noise. As is true with all JBL Studio Series loudspeakers, the JBL S312 speakers are equipped with all-metal, five-way, gold-plated binding-post speaker terminals. This model comes in black ash and includes a two-year parts and labor warranty on the speaker enclosure and a five-year parts and labor warranty on the speaker driver and internal components. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST SPEAKER AMZON HAS TO OFFER
Unlike its little brother, the JBL S310, which is a great speaker, JBL really turned it up a level producing the high-quality, d.j.PROFESSIONAL JBL S312BE STUDIO SERIES. THIS PUTS
OUT 250 WATTS, LIKE ITS YOUNGER BROTHER, BUT MADE THE BASS 2"
LARGER, ALL BUILT WITHIN A CABINET THAT STAYS STILL AT PEAK LEVELS OF PERFORMANCES! THE HIGHS, MIDRANGE, AND BASS JUST POUND OUT SUPERB QUALITY MUSIC. The price one would need to pay
for a comparable speaker, would be hundreds more, and gain very

little quality over these monsters! Serious about music and its quality? The JBL S312 STUDIO SERIES HAS IT ALL!

5-0 out of 5 stars customer service
Speakers sounded clear with deep bass.Blew tweeter before first year was up ,have a relativly high powered system (within rec specs). After placing order 4 months ago I am still waiting for part from jbl.Owned several types of jbl's including L100Ts and s -412's and loved them all.FOLLOW UP-for do it your selfers when ordering a replacement part from jbl a copy of the reciept is needed.after misunderstanding on my part cleared up customer service was outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Speakers with plenty of power to spare!
Not only do I own a pair of these great speakers, but I also decided to build my home theater system around them. I have the S38's for surround, the S-Center speaker and not one but two PB12 subwoofers (I like a lot of bass)! Action, science fiction and horror movies are truly brought to life with these speakers. My CD collection has never sounded better. I have a Sony receiver rated at 120 watts per channel and so far I have not been able to turn it up even half way, that's how efficient these speakers are! So, if you want to rock the floors and walls, put a permanent smile on your face, and put a frown on your neighbors faces, check these speakers out, you will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loud & Clean
If you love music loud and clean, you need to audition these. I have listened to many speakers in my time and, in my opinion, you would be hardpressed to find a better performer for the money. I listen to a variety of types of music and I'm never disappointed in these speakers. Played through a 50wpc tube amp and coupled with a PSW 12 sub, the sound is so good that I hear things on my CD's I haven't heard before. And my old speakers are on the famous Stereophile Recommended Components list. I did notice that a bookshelf speaker in this Studio Series is already recommended by Stereophile as well, so that should be an indication that this is a serious speaker. Do not confuse this series with some others in the JBL line. The Studio Series is for real.

5-0 out of 5 stars JBL is back
This is JBL's first offering worth purchasing since my old L100's. Buy a pair ... and put them up against anything in the .... You also get plenty of lows without purchasing a sub. They really perform after about 40 hours of break in. Reverse one of the leads, face the pair together, throw a blanket over them and give them a couple to three days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's nothing like this puppy!!
I'm not an audiophile, but I can tell to anyone how goooood it sounds!! After its brake-in period, the sound became spacious, crisp and clear. Originally was a little bit stiff. Good things: solid. Well built. It has CLASS and presence. It has 2 JBL speakers pumping 10 watts each. 20 Watts coming from the integrated subwoofer. I love its bass! It's tight, cozy, espectacular and clear. VERY unusual quality of sound for its price. I even hooked up a single tape deck to it, and I listen also to my tapes while in bed. I have also cranked it up several times, including with the Beethoven's 9th and the crazy sounddtrack from A Clockwork Orange. It came out impervious!! What a puppy!! The JBL Harmony is a very versatil: dual ALARM CLOCK, AM/FM RADIO/CD PLAYER and a very decent ornament in the table bed too. It's so good in sound reproduction that people entering the room will be surprised the sound is coming from such a little thing!! Its sound will make you think it came out of an expensive component turned on and hidden somewhere in your bedroom. I'm not going to get into the technical data. I'll let you check it up by yourself under "explore this item". I'm just telling you how tremendous value it is and how beautifully it sounds. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MARKET THAT CAN COMPETE WITH THIS PUPPY IN QUALITY, CRAFTMANSHIP, SOUND AND VALUE FOR THE MONEY.
On the bad side: Display cannot be read from 2 ft away. You hardly can tell what track is being played even by getting closer than one foot to check it out and you can't even tell what time it is from the other side of your bed. The remote is non-illuminated. No treble/bass controls whatsoever, but it's functional when you can see its markings to activate its functions. You will love it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars JBL Harmony Premium CD/radio clock
Overall this is very nice combination CD player and FM radio for the bedroom or office. The unit has internal speakers and recessed slot in the rear to pick the unit up. The construction is solid and together with the looks, has a luxury feel. There is plenty of nice bass although I would prefer also a tone control to sometimes bring out more treble. There is also an AUX input and the antenna is a wire "T"

My Harmony has given me a couple of slight problems. One was a quiet occasional beep sound when on, because the unit was too close to a cordless phone base station. The other is a very slight buzz in the base (after a year), presumably from the power supply. A good hard wack on the base stops it for a couple of weeks at a time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classical and Opera Sucks, Pop Rocks
For the asking list price of nearly $500 and the JBL brand name, I was expecting a system that could compete with Bose Wave CD/Radio. I was extremely dissappointed when I listened to Wager and Stravinsky on the JBL Harmony. Strings sound artificial and like a synthesizer. Bass response was good however. Dynamic range is limited and the sound sounds small. Pop music does sound excellent however with the help from the woofer. While radio reception in stereo sucks, the reception is very good in mono. I have to agree with others on how good the JBL Harmony sounds for its size. But you could do much better with Bose or any other audio systems in the $200 range, at least in terms of sound quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Value...
I agree with the other reviewers. For a relatively small audio system (or should I dare say clock radio? ), the sound quality is exceptional. It has a warmth and depth that cannot be matched with comparable systems. The display is a disappointment but not as bad as I had expected when I read the reviews prior to the purchase. The design is sleek and elegant. Overall, coupled with the price...it is an exceptional value. I intend to buy a second one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
The JBL Harmony certainly has quite a good sound quality for its size. The fact that the display is not that good hasn't been a problem at all since I just put my cheep digital clock next to it. The sound balance of this system tends to select the type of music it can play well. Popular/rock music sound best on this system since it has a powerful bass. Although I might be demanding too much for this price range, classical music does not sound good. In general, the cymbals sound cheep, or rather, the bass is sometimes too powerful that it tends to cover up the details. I sometimes got the impression that the music was flat and not very interesting. Jazz is inbetween rock and classical music.

If you are in college and don't want to be carrying huge boxes every year when you move out during the summertime, this is the product you want within this price range. If you are looking for good sound and you don't mind the capacity, I recommend that you rather assemble a system by yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars JBL PB12 Amplifier flaw
When I purchased the PB12 in October, I had to wait another month for all the other components for my home theater system. Once all was connected the PB12 was superb. It did everything I wanted and I didn't even have to crank it up. Movies sound better than music for whatever reason but I am (was) completely satisfied, until last week. On Wednesday 2/13/02, I was in another part of the house and heard a loud buzz. When I walked into the living room, I noticed the red led's on the PB12 were not lit. The system wasn't even running and the amp took out the fuse. I haven't had any luck yet to resolve this problem but have read several other complaints about the same thing. Good luck to all who have this great sounding sub and please wish me some. It sounds like I'm going to need it.

1-0 out of 5 stars good but bad
This is no doubt a great deal for the money (I but mine used in December of 2003 on an auction site for $200 total), and like many have said here, it "kicks butt." It sounded great for awhile, but it has a known flaw that can't be repaired. I'm guessing that for all owners, the subwoofer will go out, and the part that will go bad cannot be replaced (the S64AMI power module). This part of the subwoofer is under a one year warranty. Anyone doubting this flaw has not done their homework, and/or has yet to have their subwoofer burn up. I emailed JBL tech support with my story and that my future with JBL was in question. I got a pleasant reply that basically agreed with my assessment (that it was a faulty design and can't be repaired) and said if it was under warranty or within 6 months or so of warranty, I'd get a free replacement. The replacement is the JBL E250P, which looks like basically the same unit. The respondent claimed that the updated design was more reliable and more repairable (none of these rare, expensive proprietary parts like the S64AMI).

He also said that if it was not under warranty, I could buy this newer subwoofer for $211.77 ($188 + $23.77 shipping), which lists at over $400. After scouring ebay and the internet for equivalent deals, the best I could find was a similar Harmon Kardon (but only 150W vs. 250W for about $200 shipped...and HK owns JBL), or this replacement JBL for about $260 shipped. So, as a cheapskate, I actually opted to go back into the fire and try JBL again for the $212. Considering I bought my PB12 used for $200 on audiogon.com and that with the new one, I'll have a fresh warranty, it still seemed like the best deal. If I'm made a fool (further), I'll let you all know. Look for my review of the JBL E250P I will soon be receiving...

2-0 out of 5 stars hmmm...
This sub worked phenomenally for a few months... but I noticed a couple months ago that the mighty bass has been brought down to nothing more than a whisper- it powers on and detects the input (which is apparently a step better than everyone else who's bought it), but the sub barely fires- i have to actually TOUCH the driver to make sure its working. irritating.

5-0 out of 5 stars DEEEP BASS
I bought this sub about 3 years ago from Best Buy. I have had no problems at all. I have an entire JBL 5.1 system and the only weak link is my Sony Reciever(overheating). I have put this sub though MAJOR ABUSE. I can say that i have yet to kill this sub. I love the DEEP BASS this thing puts out. Makes movies worth watching because its better watching them on DVD then in the theater. I confess that I am also a Bass Freak.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the lucky ones?!?!?
I bought this subwoofer long before I ever saw any of the reviews on this page, and after reading them, I won't say that I didn't become a little concerned. But nevertheless, I have owned my PB12 for about two years now, and it works fine and still sounds great. A friend of mine is going on his third year (I think) with his PB12.

Bottom line, if you trust JBL (I have almost all JBL and have never had problem with any of them and they all sound great) and believe that this product has possibly been improved since most of these reviews were written, then by all means BUY THIS SUB. IT SOUNDS GREAT! But be warned that Amazon.com is not the only site that I have seen complaints about this product. ... Read more
