5-0 out of 5 stars Commuter Dream
I had a small iRiver unit, a 256 MB one that taught me how to play with MP3 files and such. I totally fell in love with it but my frequent commutes to NYC and subsequent subway trips also taught me that ~4 CD's worth of music gets old, especially on a two week trip. I did a ton of research and bought this unit. I am extremely glad I did!

First off, I have only put about 20 CD's in it and it's not even 1/16th used up as far as space is concerned. And let me tell you, loading them couldn't have been easier. You plug it into a USB port and bingo, Windows XP recognized it as an external hard drive so placing files is simply a drag and drop exercise. Of note is that fold and file name information is copied over exactly as you have it on your PC hard drive. Also of note is that this unit sorts alphabetically via the first word in the title so if you're used to sorting by the last name of an artist, you'll have to rename the files accordingly as I've not found a way to correct this once you have copied the files over in their original form. Another bonus, since its seen as a hard drive by your PC, you can copy to it whatever your PC can hold. That is amazingly handy if you want to take work with you from one PC to another, such as Word documents and the like. Edit them to your hearts content and simply copy them back to the unit for transport to your other PC.

As for the size, I held it up against the bigger iPod as well as the 15GB Dell, they're all about the same. It's not extremely sexy or anything and the brown leather case that comes with it is a bit more bulky than I'd like, especially the seams around the edges - but overall, that's a minor complaint.

For usability, this thing flat out rocks. The way I use it is I put the main unit in my jacket pocket or on a belt loop and the hook the remote to a lapel, shirt pocket or even fold a piece of the shirt material over to grip it and put the remote in about the same spot every time. That way I can easily find the buttions and thumb wheels (they don't fully turn so I guess they're technically a rocker switch) without looking. I also like how it eases you into the last song you were playing be starting at a lower volume and then working up to the last volume setting you used. This keeps you from being blown out by a sudden hit of sound. It works that way when you pause it too, I sometimes have to listen to subway information being relayed and simply hit the giant play button once on the remote and the song is paused right where I was and starts back at the same point. Again, with that neat low to normal volume increase.

One thing I can't seem to master from the remote yet is how to browse up and down folder levels. I know it can be done because I did it by following along with the instructions and it works fine, I just can't seem to easily remember how to do it when I'm on the train and want to switch to a different CD. The remote play, stop and volume controls are nice and work well for almost everything. The book says you can do everything with the remote that you can from the unit but I'm using the joystick-like device on the main unit every time I want to change to a different album. When it's freezing cold out and I have to go under the jacket to do it, it's a pain. I guess when I get back home I'll pull the book out and learn how to do all the functions from the remote.

I did notice it picks up a minor amount of electrical interference when the subway train accelerates, probably because of the electric motors used to run it. It's low and not a problem as you only hear it when the song volume is very low or you're inbetween songs.

Lastly, I've read that folks believe the learning curve to be a bit long. I had no problems whatsoeve so I guess I think like an iRiver engineer! My wife got my older unit loves it so much, it has me believing I'll be buying her a larger unit soon.

Let me tell you, if the iPod or Dell are better, I'd be surprised. This unit feels solid, has been totally skip proof for me even though it uses a Toshiba microdrive, and has even been dropped without a problem.

I like iRiver's web site too, go check the product out there and you'll see what I mean. It is really cool and the standard ear buds don't even sound too bad. I bought more expensive Sony ones based on review I've read online but I find the original ones so light and comfortable, I could literally use them all day without a problem.

If you're looking at the Dell or iPod, you may want to consider this one on price alone. It also supports more song file types than the competition and seems like a unit I'll have around a long, long time.

Now, I've got to go rip some more CD's from my collection so I can begin utilizing some of the massive drive space I now have!

If you're on the fence, don't be...buy it!

Steve

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product, Loaded with Features, yet Simple
I will caveat that I bought my wife an i-Pod last year and she loves it. This was the one rare time that electonics worked as a gift for the wife. Luckily, I was able to use it quite a bit and got a good feel for how it and HD players operate. Anyway, I'm not an apple hater or anything, but a few things bothered me about the i-Pod, so when I went in the market for a HD player, I wanted to see what else was out there. I've owned the iRiver H140 for over three months. Although I wouldn't exactly give it 5 stars, it definitely deserves more than four. I've outlined pros/cons, with some inevitable comparisons to i-Pod.

PROS:
- Long battery life... They claim 16 hours and I've gotten pretty close to that. I-Pod gets about six.
- Plug and play... If you have Windows Explorer (or whatever OS equivalent), you can literally plug in the H140, copy in the tunes, and you're ready to go. I-Pod requires the use of iTunes software.
- Fast transfer... It takes me about 4 minutes per GB.
- Organization... You can organize your music however you want, since it uses a folder file system (like Windows Explorer).
- OGG support... Ogg is way better than mp3, especially for listening to live recordings (make up about 1/3 of my collection). It's similar to VBR mp3, but takes up less space. Also supports WMA, WAV, and ASF.
- Features... There's some good stuff here: built-in voice recorder, line in/out, optical in/out, .txt file reader, FM tuner, and more.
- Firmware upgradeable... They listen to customer feedback and apply some changes in the upgrades. Although it tends to take a while for the releases, at least it's upgradeable. There are two releases due out in the next couple months.
- Fully functional backlit remote... You can see this in the picture and really takes this product to the next level.
- Easy to use... Although people have mentioned "learning curves" and "difficult to navigate" on these reviews, it actually is extremely easy to copy files from your PC, turn it on, and play the music. Yes it's true that you will have to learn how to use the multitude of features, but I was able to read the entire manual online before I even got the player, so I already knew how to use most of it. If you know the difference between pressing a button and holding down a button, you will do fine.
- Big display... Nice 8-line display. The remote has a 4-line display.
- Value... at $379 for 40 GB, you can't go wrong. It's well built and sturdy (no plastic). You can find cheaper players out there, but that's what you will get. I-Pods (all Apple products) are expensive in general.
- Stable... So far I have had zero issues. The i-Pod has frozen up on us quite a few times.
- Stop button... Had to throw this in here because the i-Pod has no stop button and it p*sses me off.

CONS:
- Slower navigation... It's actually not that slow, but when compared to the i-Pod wheel it lags a little. If you can get used to scrolling up to find something near the end of the alphabet (i.e. Rolling Stones) you will be fine.
- Questionable case... it comes with a brown leather case that's kind of ugly and adds to its size, but at least it comes with it.
- Lack of accessories... there are not too many accessories made specifically for the H series. I did find a universal RCA car adapter (couldn't find the same one on amazon though) that works with 5V.
- No clock... this sucks mainly because you can't date your recordings.
- Can't record from FM radio... in case you do this.
- Slower startup time... Here is a big trade-off because the i-Pod starts right up (takes about 2 seconds) because it's always in "standby" mode, which is why the battery drains so fast. The iRiver shuts down to conserve battery power, but still only takes about 8 seconds to start up. There is an optional DB functionality that helps organize your songs by genre, etc., which makes for slower startup time (I've heard), but I don't use this.
- Tiny 1/2 second gap between songs... this sucks but they fixed it and will be released in one of the next two firmware upgrades.

So really what it came down to for me was the pros were big advantages and the cons were minor. I'm not saying this is the best player for everyone (again, my wife loves the i-Pod and I'm not sure how she would do with the H140). It defintely has more power functions than most, if not all, HD players.

I would greatly recommend this product to anyone looking for a HD player, *especially* if you are looking to buy an i-Pod.

4-0 out of 5 stars schedule for firmware update and new features
From the official iriver forum on July 19,2004, I see someone has translated the Korean iriver's announcement of H Series firmware update schedule. (If it turns out that there are mistranslations/misrepresentations, I'll update/delete this review here as soon as I hear). In late July/early August, they expect to have these features/fixes: 1. OTF File Deletion, 2. Propriety Format Support, 3. Playback Speed Control (not as flexible as IFP series, but will be supported)4. Gapless 5. Unicode Support in DB, 6. OGG Support for DB, 7. Hebrew Support, 8. Sub-dir support for Text Folder,9. Enhanced Shuffle Mode,11. Line Automated Lyric Support 12. A bug that occured to the remote when NAVI button is pressed in the PLAYLIST... is fixed,13. Programmable OTF Playlist,14. LCD Screen Bug in Radio Mode Fixed,15. Reduced Noise on the LCD Screen While Using the Remote,16. External Battery Support.

Due in October they are claiming: 1. Volume Control in Record Mode, 2. Recording Without the Infamous "Pauses," 3. Mono recording Support,4. SAD Support 5. Auto Sync Support (??)6. Korean Menu Support

First, for newbies/potential customers, note that iriver easily supports OGG (I'm listening to an ogg file now). The " OGG Support for DB" mentioned above merely refers to the accompanying PC software which apparently doesn't catalog ogg files correctly. Second, let me mention that I can't read Korean, so I can't vouch for the translation. Also, the firmware is really late (and owners are getting exasperated). Still, all of these are significant improvements, and even if we assume schedule slip and the usual marketing puffery, these would be significant improvements. I'm happy to see that they are updating firmware regarding recording for the October firmware update. I would feel good if this second firmware update comes before Christmas. If it comes earlier, so much the better. People on the misticriver forum are speculating that the "external battery support" that either ihp will be offering a battery pack or at least allow thir d parties batteries to be used. Pure speculation.

1-0 out of 5 stars BATTERY
IT'S A GOOD PLAYER, BUT DO YOU GUYS KNOW THAT YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE BATTERY?. THE BATTERY HAS A RECHARGEABLE LIFE OF ABOUT 3 YEARS, AFTER THEN STARTS TO FAIL TO RECHARGE. WHEN I ASKED TECHNICAL SUPPORT THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE CONSIDERING OFFERING TO REPLACE THE BATTERY WHEN NEEDED, FOR A FEE AT THEIR SERVICE FACILITY. BUT THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE JUST STARTING TO CONSIDER THAT POSSIBILITY AND THAT THEY COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT SUCH AN OPTION WAS GOING TO BE MADE AVAILABLE. I FOUND COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE TO SPEND ALMOST 400 DOLLARS FOR A PRODUCT THAT I'LL HAVE TO THROW AWAY BECAUSE I CANNOT REPLACE THE BATTERY. I RETURNED THE PRODUCT. BEWARE.

3-0 out of 5 stars I could have been a contender BUT
This is a very nice player in terms of many functions, sound quality, battery life and amount of storage. But: it is very cumbersome to use in contrast to iPod, especially with regard to playlist management. There is NO random shuffle playlist - songs always play in the same order as on the playlist, support is poor to non-existent, the unit needs a firmware support desparately to address several problems but it's been over 6 months and no upgrade still. The remote has a really weird recessed headphone jack that requires a proprietary extension cord to fit most headphones. The 12 volt adaptor was out of stock for months, you could not even place a preorder for it but finally it's available. Ergonomics and music management don't even come close to an iPod synched with iTunes on an Apple computer - I use both Windows XP and Mac systems. And this doesn't allow playback of many online music tunes...so forget that option...

Most disturbing: iRiver already has the replacement model (H320 series) about to come out, and yet the firmware that seems as though it could fix some of the major problems in the H140 or H120 has not been released in OVER 6 months and support is close to non-existent.

It's a lot to spend when there's a new and improved model about to come out and customers who've just purchased an H140 feel neglected and insulted. Please check the iRiver discussion groups for confirmation of the many unhappy H series owners, despite what could have been the BEST unit out there and still is a very good unit...If I had to do it again I would definitely wait for the H320 to be released and re-evaluate; if iRiver does fix the H140, they should become available at under $200 which would be a very fair price for this player with the bugs fixed... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
This iriver player is superb! Coupled with Bose QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones, it forms the ultimate travellers set for under $500. The iriver player (in its case) slips neatly into the Bose case outer sleeve too - nice!

Neat features of this player worthy of mention:
- Battery life is great - 16 hours standard (rechargable) with up to 55 hours when used with the external battery pack.
- Functional behaviour is extremely customisable. There are many menus available to get it to work just how you want it to.
- Player is firmware upgradable! As new formats come out, iriver can provide firmware upgrades to allow your player to be able to play them. Most others it supports what it supports and that's it.
- You get a free car kit including tape deck adaptor and car charger - very handy
- the unit is very light and compact - less than one and a half centimetres thick - one of the thinnest on the market
- It supports Winamp playlists. Simply include your playlist onto the CD you burn and the iriver player can load it up.
- The remote is excellent
- the overall product quality is superb

Why it is better than a Hard Drive MP3 player:
- Battery life is way better
- CDs are cheap as chips and you can fit around 10 hours of music on a CD anyway (if this is not enough for your trip or whatever, just take another CD along with you!)
- the iriver CD player costs WAY less than a HD player. For $188, this product is a bargain! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "portable" sound ever
I bought this device 6 months ago from Amazon and I'm still amazed of its performance. Actually each time I upgrade the firmware version I feall like getting a new player.
What amazed myself and everybody that tryied listening music to my Iriver IMP-550 is the quality and the power of the sound.
The second thing that "seduced" me is the advanced technology used to this device, allowing lots of menu options, firmware upgrade and multiple codec support. As a "minus" to the technology are the software bugs, but are allways corrected by the new firmware versions and are a very low price to pay in order to get the upgradeable feature.
An other important think is the beautifull design of the player. The headphones I got aren't the best looking though.
As considering the long lasting of the parts I may say that i have test it only for six months, but unfortunatly the headphones got broken recently, probably due to the high sound level listening.

Concluding: I still find this player the best to buy of the portable CD players with MP3 support.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing....
I need to start off by saying, that i really wish i could give this product but a 4 1/2, but...amazon wont let me! But on with the review!

~ok, this player is simple amazing...i knew what to expect from the machine (considering the hours and hours of research that i did) and this beautiful player fulfilled that and SO much more. I chose this over the sony D-ne1, and i'm happy i did!

Design

~the design is simple, but modern. There's no screen at all on the player itself, it's even void of controls! it's all been placed on their remote. The player itself isn't actually a circle, it's actually an oval, but the extra space on the top is so small that i doubt it's noticable at all that it's not a circle. The player is very light, and seems very fragile, but what can you expect considering how much it ways? the remote has the same kind of feel to it. But overall it's a great looking machine.

Remote

~ this and the somewhat fragile design is why i had to give the player 4 1/2 stars. The remote itself is just as well designed as the player, but it can be sooo confusing at times... it takes a lot of getting used too, but once you have gotten used to it, it's actually quite simple. But that means, if you're thinking about sharing it with friends or whatever, they may need some tutorials in the use of it. The jog sticks also act as buttons to go through the menus and such, and these are your main navigation tools. The stop and play buttons only act as what their names describe. Also a BIG problem with the remote is that larger headphones, where the jack is larger even though it's still a 1/8th size don't completely fit in! this can be truly annoying when your trying to use some of the nicer headphones out with with this player. i own a pair of AKG K240S, and with them i'm using a 1/8th adapter from radioshack, i can't even fit it in all the way to get the full effect of the headphones! and yes, it is the right stereo phone plug size...

*Overall!

~beautiful player+great remote once you get used to it
~thing and small! a great combination
~problems with headphone plug-ins
~fragile design

3-0 out of 5 stars Attractive, and convinient MP3 CD Player....for a while
I recieved this product as a present a few months ago. When i first got it it worked perfectly, it was easy to use, and it was very attractive. Now a few months later it seems to have stopped working.Whenever I try to play a CD it tries to read it and then says NO DISC, when the disc reads fine on other CD players. You can try buying this MP3 CD PLayer, because if it continues to work it'll be great, but it might turn out like mine, broken in a couple months

2-0 out of 5 stars dont be mislead by the high rating
Yes. This play is cute, thin, beautiful and have almost all the features I want. However, after working for a few hours, it stop to recognize the CD I feed in. Not completely stop, but I have to do the following: (1) power off; (2) take out my CD from the player; (3) mount my CD in exactly as I did before; (4) power on. This player may then take several minutes trying to do... something... and finally come with a sign "no disk". Okay! repeat (1)-(4) steps... In a extreme case just for a test, I have to repeat 11 times to let it play my CD.

Still hesitate to return it because it is so cute. (By the way, I hate sony's "camel" design with a bump on the back so people cant see it from the front, which is what pictures show.) I did the (1)-(4) steps for another two days, as long as it can play, until today. This player seems to be trapped on a track and did not move on to another. Okay, that could be a CD that I so enjoy and played many time, so it is of low quality compared to a brand new one, but I have so many CDs in such condition!

Okay! remembering there was a little notice says "Stop! before you return, please call xxxxxxxx, we can help". Calling in night... automatical recording: "we work xxx-xxx, monday-friday". Okay, call the next day and waits for more than 15 minutes... hang on because I do not know how long time I am going to wait!

Just took a look at the reviews. It seems like I am not the only one experiencing problem with this player. Okay... may be I am the one with bad luck (and I really admire those of you with good luck!), but I do not think it is the problem of myself for the manufacture to let this out of his factory.

May be I will return it or ask a replacement to test my luck. For those who are going to buy it, good luck! I could be one out of ten who get into trouble with this, but this is my real story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Features, Memory, and Nice Sound
I just recently got this thing, and im loving every minute of it. I was making my choice between an ipod and this iriver, but I chose this thing, because it was about 100 dollars cheaper and has about the same features and is less than the ipod. Also this battery lasts 16 hours on a full charge, double the ipods battery life.

It has lots of features, An Fm tuner, not many other MP3 players come with an Fm tuner you have to buy them as an add-on. A cool little handy remote. When you upgrade the file manager at iriver.com you can arrange your music by artist, album, Genre, or Titles.

The memory size is great. I currently have 16 cds on here and it only takes up 451mb, i will be adding more. Also this thing doubles as an external Hard Drive. So you can drag and drop your pc files onto this player and transfer it onto another computer. Also the 20gb size allows you to hold about 5,000 songs.

The sound quality is great, even though i have crappy headphones, i can tell the difference from my other mp3 player. I suggest after getting this, buy a pair of nice headphones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definately a GREAT buy
Positives
-Slick LCD remote. You control EVERY function of the play using that tiny thing
-Amazing SRS/Trubass system. You can clearly hear the difference in sounds. It does a great job of emphasizing bass.
-Directory/File System (Drag and Drop) and a database mode
-One button that controls almost everything
-USB 2.0 = FAST
-Microphone/Recording ability
-LONG battery life
-Nice leather case
-Its amazing to use once you get used to the functions and learn to add songs and create playlists
Negatives
-Somewhat of a learning curve. When you try to add songs into the database, you'll get "Failure" errors and "No DB" errors. You have to search through all your songs to fix them manually. Failure occurs when your song name is too long, and NoDB shows up when your ID3 tags arent the correct version.
-Playlists dont work unless you manually edit them using notepad to delete the directory. For example it would say "H:\Music\Pop\xxx.mp3. I needed to delete the "H:\" part to get things to work. I used Winamp5 to create playlists.
-Wires get out of hand. The combined length of the Remote cord and the Headphone cord creates a mess.
-No extra stuff. The ipod comes with games and news

The largest negatives can be solved within a day of using it. Its a great player that can match up to any other HD based player.20GB isnt the cheapest on the market, but it is small, packed with functionality and amazing sound this deal cannot be beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars iHP 120
I have had my iRiver for about three weeks and I absolutely love it. I have nearly 1000 songs and still have nearly 17GB left. I love that it can read OGG files which are good quality and space saving. From what I know of other mp3 player I have found that this is by far the best because it has an internal and external microphone and a FM radio. The only things I don't like are that once you put a song in it you can't gain space back once it is deleted (kind of obvious but still disappointing) and (this is why you shouldn't buy this product) that iRiver is coming out with the H300 series in America soon (is already released in Japan and Europe) which is nicer looking, a color screen, same space and I think that it will be the same price. The other thing I wish it had was the ability to create a play list anywhere with no host computer but that doesn't bother me much. Overall this product is great and I love it, but once I can get the H320 I will buy that.

3-0 out of 5 stars iRiver H-120 is ALMOST a great MP3 player...
With lots of enthusiasm I spurned my wife's urging and purchased an iRiver H-120 instead of an iPod like the one she owns. The extra features (voice record and a built-in FM tuner lured me to the dark side). I called it my "anti-Pod" music player. Initially I was delighted with my purchase. And in some respects I remain reasonably satisfied. But alas, my dream of a perfect MP3 player remains woefully unfulfilled.

What bothers me about this iRiver player is the unfulfilled "promise" from iRiver of frequent and significant firmware updates which would unlock features, correct problems, and otherwise enhance the usefulness of my iRiver purchase. In as much as I am heavily involved in software development myself, I felt this was a tremendous advandage for the H-120 over the iPod. After all, Apple never plays up their firmware upgrade capabilities - even though they doubtlessly have this capability.

In April, after much talk about the lack of a recent firmware update, iRiver went to the trouble of posting a public notice on the iRiver discussion message board that they would be releasing not one, but TWO firmware updates for the H-120. One in May 2004 and another to follow in June. Much joy was expressed on the iRiver message board related to this promise. Exciptment built and enthusiastic buyers sought out the best deals on these players. Many were sold with this promise of firmware updates. Then May came, slowly passing day by day and what? No firmware update. No new firmware. Oh well, everyone talked it up that they would relase both updates in June. Alas, June came ---- and went... Still NO firmware. Now we're halfway through July, and still no firmware. Nothing. Nada. No revised promise. Nothing encouraging from iRiver. No nothing. The silence is deafening. The discussion on the iRiver forums has soured. Folks talke of returning their iRivers while they can... Makes you wonder if iRiver is unable to support the products as they have promised.

I'll not go so far as to say I'd never buy another iRiver product. But the odds of me doing that deminish with every passing day that no firmware upgrade is posted on the iRiver site.

So if you are thinking of buying an iRiver product with the belief that you're purchase will be well supported with firmware upgrades - as some products truly are - then thing twice and three times before settling on iRiver as your best choice.

The hardware itself (at least the H-120 I am familiar with) is first rate. But the lack of ongoing support leaves me feeling that so much promise is missing from this otherwise fine piece of equipment.

I'd love to report back one day soon that iRiver has kept their "promise." But at this point I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that they either just don't care, or are incompetent to do anything about it. Either way it isn't a good sign for iRiver and their customer base...

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Product, Terrible company
This mp3 player is clearly the best that is available. Twice the battery life of an Ipod, line in/out, optical in/out, voice recorder, FM,.. the list goes on.

However, the flaws with teh player relate to the firmware.. there are some bugs that have been posted on the Iriver forums about 4-5 months ago. The company is very irresponsible and does not care about your once u've purchased the product. Take a look at their forums and you will see what i mean. There are at least 10 bugs which need to be fixed and iRiver hasn't released a fix for nearly 4 months, even though they promised to address these issues many many months ago. Bugs such as gapless playback, on the fly playlisting, delete feature, hard disk spinning issue, etc. These are all simple fixes that can be done very easily, but iriver decided to abdanon support for this series now that they have a new model that is color and supports video playback.

If you can live with these bugs, get the player, it is great.. otherwise wait for something else... iPod V.4??? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing sound quality.Great features.

I had originally purchased a similar Samsung player that I had liked a lot in design for a flash player. Some of my tunes on that unit sounded great, some were just so-so.Having done further research.I was uncertain whether I was going to go w/ a Creative Muvo or the iRiver; I passed on an IPOD Shuffle b/c I don't like having do deal with manufactuer's overpriced batteries if they die.Creative Labs had pretty good ratings for sound quality and a very low price. However, some of the reviewers indicated issues with product defects.

So I splurged on the 1 GB iRiver 899.Though the body being plastic did not seem the most durable; the sound was outstanding, loud, and well articulated, on EVERY song- even those less than 128 resolution. There are numerous options including 3D sound, Bass boost, preset and manual graphic equalizer, that allow you to further enhance your tunes.1 GB is holding over 120 with over a 1/4 of the hard drive still free - many of my files are 192 kpbs or higher!

There is are two minor nuisances that I chose to overlook:
* You must use the proprietary software to load the player.( You can not drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows. That said the software is not complicated.Just slows things up a little.

* If you want to share tunes with friends, you can not upload from the player to another computer, or even back onto your own.IRiver says this is to control piracy.Still a bit of a let down.

Albeit the above dings, I am still giving the unit five stars. The sound is unprecedented and loaded with features. These attributes substantially outweighed all.

5-0 out of 5 stars This player is really Good

Amazon.com Product Description

The innovative iMP-150 (also available as the iMP-150CK, with car kit) comes stacked to the gills with features like broad format compatibility, prebuffering, antiskip protection, firmware upgradability, graphic LCD with multilanguage display, and packet-write format readability so the player can double as a hard drive extension (using data CD-RWs).

The ChromeX supports music CDs and homemade CD-Rs and CD-RWs with MP3, WMA, and Microsoft's Advanced Systems Format (ASF). New formats such as AAC and mp3PRO can be supported in the future through a simple firmware upgrade. The iMP-150CK also supports Winamp playlists as long as they use the .m3u file extension (a maximum of 20 lists).

The player provides 40 seconds of skip protection for conventional audio CDs, 120 seconds for MP3 (44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps standard), and 240 seconds for WMA (44.1 kHz, 64 Kbps). By applying iRiver's own special algorithm, the iMP-150CK provides better performance against shock than standard antiskip algorithms. At the same time, iRiver maximizes protection at the beginning of songs through prebuffering.

The iMP-150CK comes with a graphic LCD that supports multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and other alphabet-oriented fonts; Korean; Japanese (katakana, hiragana, and kanji); and others--a total of 35 languages. With MP3 (128 Kbps) files, the iMP-150 can play for 16 hours on two AA batteries (not included). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music to my ears (and pocket book)
I've just received the ChromeX, and I love it! The sounds from this machine are crystal clear and well-balanced; I hear details I haven't heard from other systems.

The anti-shock protection is very good - I've tried jiggling and shaking the player and it doesn't miss a beat.

The 'remote' is light and has all the functions you could want. Navigating the menus on the CD player and with the remote were easy after looking at the manual, and relatively intuitive.

I haven't had the CD player long enough to know how well the batteries last on average, or to run across any problems (not that I think that I will).

Here is a summary of the pros and cons of the ChromeX from what I've seen so far:

Pros:
* Excellent sound quality
* Easy-to-use
* Plays MP3 / WMA / ASF / regular CDs (including CD-R and CD-RW)
* Stylish design
* Upgradeable firmware
* Handy little remote
* Stylish design
* Head
* Inexpensive, especially for this quality!

Cons:
* No AC adapter included (can be purchased direct from iRiver)
* No rechargeable batteries included (despite what the amazon site is included)

For this price it would be hard to find another player with all of the features and quality of this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best MP3 player for the price.
Seeing as one of the benefits of MP3s is that they are, for the most part, free, it hardly seems logical to spend a fortune for a player. Flash memory players are expensive, and supplementing their internal memory is almost as expensive as buying a new player. Hard-drive based players are extremely pricy...

The only other real option is CDs. Unfortunately, until recently, you could only fit about an hour onto a single cd, or had to buy an expensive and cheaply made CD-MP3 player.

The ChromeX is a godsend to those of us who want to hear our MP3 collection on the go, but don't have a fortune to spend. Also, unlike most other MP3-CD players, the ChromeX is both attractive and well built (especially for the price).

The sound from the ChromeX is extremely good. Its equalizer options are well designed, and unlike most CD players (namely Sony ones) it doesn't just boost up the bass (though its bass is good, very clean). The volume is good and loud (7mw per channel), and the sound doesn't break up at high volumes.

Strongly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
For a cd player under $60, you really get the bang for your buck. It contains all the features it says it has. However, there are some minor annoyances which prevent it from recieving 5 stars:
1.) Speed - It takes an average time of 13 seconds for the chromex to "power up". It also takes around 5 seconds to switch from track to track using cd audio, the same goes with data music (mp3, wma, etc.).
2.) Included headphones - These are very cheap, you are much better off using another pair of quality headphones.
3.) ESP - This cd player is not a jogger. Even though a 10-second ESP is set by default, a 40-second ESP is an option. Since I workout in the gym regularly, flawless anti-shock is a must. It works ok, but not great.
4.) Size - If you're are willing to shell out extra money, the SlimX would be a better option.
5.) Volume - I have used 4 different pairs of headphones, and the max volume isn't quite as loud as other cd players I have used in the past. This is absolutely neccesary when you're in a loud environment. Howevever, if you using it in a somewhat quiet setting, then you are good to go.

This is an all-around great cd player, but it didn't blow me away. Even with these minor annoyances, you can oversee them in short time and fully enjoy it. If you are on a budget and want a lot of features in a cd player for under $60, you can't go wrong with the ChromeX.

2-0 out of 5 stars not good for a long lasting cd player
ive had this cd player for a little less than a year and it has failed me. After about 6 months or so, the cd player wouldnt work. i would press play, and it would come up to the screen that says Iriver and then under it says "loading..."..and it would never go on...everytime it would never go on..so it was still under the warranty so i sent it back to the company and got a new one..about 2 months later...the play button did not work anymore...put brand new batteries in everytime...never worked...the player just wouldnt go on..battery life was HORRIBLE...heavy, and bulky..does not go loud at all..alright sound quality..otherwise..look for something else

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
I have had this for a year and have only great things to say.
The firmware is great. A feature that I really like is that it recalls what track it was playing on several CD's . I have been able to play CDRW without a problem too. The remote control is very useful.
In simply doesn't skip (unless batteries are running really low). Battery life is super long. And the price! Stop reading this and get your own! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Somewhere between Apple's iPod and more traditional MP3 players lies the iDP-100 DataPlay unit from iRiver. While this device costs more than a basic music player, it offers some unique features that make it worth consideration.

Employing the new DataPlay media format, the iDP-100 reads music from 500 MB (250 MB per side) optical disks the size of a quarter. Although the disks can only be written to once, they're a fairly inexpensive way (around $10 a pop) to house sizeable chunks of your MP3 library.

But that statement's not entirely accurate. Your MP3s first need to be converted to the secure CK format (DataPlay's proprietary content storage format) before being sent to the player. Files in these formats can't be transferred off the DataPlay disks nor played with any other media players except the included iRiver FuturePlayer (Real and Windows Media Player don't offer any support for the new format yet). You can also buy commercial DataPlay disks--they're like tiny CDs--and play them in the iDP-100, but you won't be able to move any music files from these disks to your PC, either. It's one of the reasons that the recording industry is really pushing the DataPlay format, although time will tell how quickly the technology world embraces it.

The iDP-100 looks like a silver hockey puck wrapped in plastic, and includes basic buttons for playing, pausing, or jumping back and forth between tracks, as well as a handy jog dial for navigating the interface and selecting play modes, including various shuffle modes. Sound output proved excellent, with no skips or pauses during hours and hours of playback, although the basic earbud headphones included with the player were set aside, as we opted for a better pair.

The iDP-100 currently supports only USB 1.1 for connectivity, but even with the conversion and burning as part of the transfer process, we were able to move about 12 MB of files per minute--not a bad rate for any MP3 player. Thankfully, the manual includes a walkthrough detailing the transfer process since it's not intuitive within the software interface. Rather than a Transfer or Send button, you have to click on My Music, then Add Files, then Save in order to send files to the player.

As a data storage device, the iDP-100 allows you to load large amounts of files and then easily transport them to another PC, but the burn-once limitation of the disks means that you'll have to buy some extras if you plan to use the iDP-100 extensively for this purpose.

DataPlay disks can hold up to 12 hours of music, and its rechargeable lithium-ion battery promises up to 12 hours of play time on a charge, so you should be able to get through most of your tracks before having to come back for more juice. In practice, we were able to get between 8 and 10 hours of play time per charge.

The bright, backlit display renders lots of information about individual tracks, including title, artist, and bit rate. A basic equalizer with bass and treble boosts lets users augment the sound output. Other options include adjusting the volume of beeps, turning on a fade-in feature to avoid sudden loudness for the next track, and an adjustable power-off timer. The iDP-100's interface can also be flash-upgraded, allowing the company to add new features or fix any bugs.

While you can find many MP3 players for less, the expandable nature of the tiny, removable DataPlay format makes the iDP-100 a tantalizing choice for taking more of your music with you. --J. Curtis

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This product works really well and is simple to use. The programs are simple to install and use. The dataplay disks are tiny, but not impossible to use. Yes, the shape is a bit awkward, but I became accustom to it and knew what it looked like before I bought it, like anyone who would research an mp3 player would do. In addition, it says directly on the package "write-once media." Yes, it is more expensive than burning your cds, but it's also smaller, more portable, and a great concept. If you want something that's smaller but is rewritable, get a minidisc player. Otherwise, this product is fantastic.

1-0 out of 5 stars non rewritable
This is by far the worst mp3 player I've every used. The disks are expensive 10 bucks a pop, and the non rewritable. MUST I SAY MORE!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars AN OASIS(looks good far , dust close up)
I saw the idp and it looked great 500 mb the closet mp3 player to it was a 256 ram version from a different company costing around .... I saw the small "CD" and thought it looked like a great deal.

The set up was a little confusing but that didn't bother me too much

Next step was to download mp3 and transfer them to the idp-100
the speed slow but again i could live with it.

I relized i didn't like a song that i had transferred to the player and opened up the E: drive on the computer to remove the song, no problem right?

After i removed the song i disconnected it from the usb cable and found out that the song was still on the player.
DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG , i looked through the book that came with the player (no sign of how to remove songs) then i went to thewebsite and looked at a FAQ and found out that the player was a "write once device and that there were no intentions to introduce rewritable media"
WHAT this looks like a scam I thought the definition of a mp3 player was the ease to organize, transfer and manipulate your own music.
If i wanted a cd player i would have bought one.
I plan on returning my unit

5-0 out of 5 stars Dataplay DID NOT GO OUT OF BUSINESS
the previous comment is false. the company has recently become partners with other companies such as Toshiba, Samsung, and Universal pictures which has actually expanded the possibilities of the media. many music artists, such as Britney Spears and N'Sync, are actually coming out with albums on Dataplay disks in mp3 format(with more than just songs on the disks).

2-0 out of 5 stars DataPlay has gone out of business, don't buy this product
Interesting product, but DataPlay went out of business on 10/15. There doens't seem any future for this product. I wouldn't buy it.
