Amazon.com Review

With its beautiful sound quality, royal good looks, and simple operation, the iRiver SlimX portable MP3-CD player sets a new standard for future portable units to follow.

The SlimX is one of the most adaptable players we've encountered. It rolls upgradable firmware, eight-minute antishock protection, ASF (Advanced Streaming Format) and WMA (Windows Media Audio) compatibility, ID3 tag support, and the ability to play standard audio CDs, MP3-encoded discs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs into an ultratrim (0.6 inches thick) player. And the sound is deluxe, delivering crisp highs, discernible mids, and bass thick enough to make low-end aficionados nod their heads in approval.

Since we had yet to fully investigate WMA, we felt compelled to dig into the format. At first we were hesitant: how could WMA compress music files to half their size--at, say, 64 Kbps--and still sound good? After dumping an entire, 100-song playlist onto a single CD-R, however, we were humbled. The procedure was painless, and the sound was incredible. The iRiver SlimX completely fulfilled our demands; using the gorgeous inline remote, we easily skipped ahead 10 tracks at a time, used fast-scan to hear a particular verse, and made a customized playlist on the fly.

In fact, the remote lets you operate every function (save changing a disc) without having to dig the unit out of your backpack or its carrying case (included, but frail), and it also includes a hold switch that prevents accidental playback.

After the WMA-disc success, we switched over to an MP3 compilation made by a friend. While reading the different ID3 tags (MP3 file markers that feed song, artist, and album names to your player), we first played the songs whose titles intrigued us most, like "Nannari to Naru Deshou" by the excellent Japanese female duoPuffy. That's why ID3 tags are so cool--they allow you to search by name, not track number.

Next, we took the SlimX out on a long walk to judge its portability. Unless we made silly, Pete Townshend-style windmill movements, each disc played satisfactorily. We noticed that standard audio CDs popped more than anything we burned off the Web, which was strange. We also sampled the five equalizer presets, although we noticed only subtle differences in sound at low volumes.

While listening to any Web-audio disc, the SlimX fills up its antiskip buffer with the eight minutes of music. Essentially, this means the player doesn't have to read the disc as much, which results in prolonged battery life, and ultimately the SlimX delivered on its promise of up to 23 hours playing time. To get these results for yourself, just make sure the two flat NiMH batteries are fully charged, and pop an extra pair of AAs into the external battery pod. It's that easy.

For those new to ASF, MP3, and WMA formats, you may be disappointed by the SlimX's user's manual, which is skimpy at best. OurGuide to Making MP3 Files will familiarize you with the basics and help you turn your computer into a virtual jukebox.

For those of you who are considering upgrading to the iRiver SlimX--or are looking to pick up your first player--we highly recommend this player. In fact, we miss our test player so much, we're going to buy one of our own. --Arno Kazarian

5-0 out of 5 stars Honestly.... IT ROCKS!!!
I had done alot of researching and searching around for a good all in one media player(You should too). I saw the 350 in a best buy catalog and decided to check it out. I was planning to get the slim sony model, i dunno what it was called... but when i saw all the features of the 350 slim x, i was blown away. I went to the store to see it first hand. I saw the slim 400 too but i thought it looked kinda boring, not as good as the 350 with that sharpish curve on the top and they both had almost the same features so i decided to get a 350. OMG it is awesome. People say it takes a while to load songs, it really doesnt. I have my super mp3 disc with 165 songs on it, over 16 hours of music, and it takes exactly 6 secs to load, which is great considering all the stuff it has to read. The firmware update works great. You get updates at iriver.com, the new update even puts the game snakebyte on to play on the remote which is great to kill some time in a train or bus. Theres even a program that lets u put lyrics on your songs which will display on the remote as the song progresses. I found the program a little hard to figure out... but i got it after reading the intructions at iriver.com. The radio sounds great. I would recommend getting better headphones, not that they sound bad, but they kinda look cheap. I have to agree with some other reviewers that say the remote is a bit hard to use at first. IT is for about the first 2 days but this is because the remote controls so much different things, i swear there are like over 80 different things u can tweck to suit your listening needs, u can have ur nam displayed on the remote, u can change the visuilzations(yes it has 3 differnt ones)Considering all the remote can do id say that it is really simple to use and the font size is just right. I have 20/20 vision but my mom has really bad vision and wears these thick lens glasses and she could read the remote fine too. My bro owns a new panasonic cd player and its so funny to put the slim x next to his. The slim x is literally half the thickness of the panasonic. and it is smaller and yet the slim x has so much more features on it. I got mine for 120. I bet if u shop around, u can get it cheaper, the 550 is coming out also, or it did, but it still has relatively the same features and i still think the 350 looks better than the 400 and 550. Well i hope this review helps u alot. I highly recommend this all in one player.Im sure there is nothing out there that can beat these slimx player, i think its all about thich of the 3 models u think look the best. O and some people worry about the brand name, iriver, its a great brand, they specialize in making mp3 players, maybe u have heard of the rios, iriver makes them. Well i again hope this review is helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars FRIKEN' AWESOME!(...)
I swear u won't be able too find a mutch better cd/mp3 player anywhere else!!! Plus, this is the best price around, all the other prices r the same or higher. Everything about this thing is awesome! I'll list them!(...)

Good things:Everything. From FM tuner to mp3 cds great stereo & extremly slim!

Bad things: Nothing except the remote. It's not bad but its sorta hard to use. But(...) fur me after u read the remote part of the manual ur all set!

3-0 out of 5 stars almost made it a year...
well the slim x 350 did many things with me..it went to school, on many trips across america, and just played music for the ears of my frinds and mine. but after about 9 months of having it, the cd reader began to fault! it would read no disc and i wanted to drop it i hated it for turning on me..but it did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for the price
I just bought mine a few days ago and I love it. I've had cd players forever but this one is very unique, considering it's tons of features, the remote and awesome sound quality. I am one of those techy geeks when it comes to sound.

Trust me it's worth it.....

2-0 out of 5 stars Its thin...
Thats all I really have to say about it. I bought it thinking it has the best anti-skip out there, but I take it on jogs and it starts skipping. I can take my panasonic cd player thats about 6 years old and it doesn't skip a beat on my jogs. The battery life is horrible--will last you about 4 hours if you're lucky. Don't waste your money on this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Portable machine!!!!
I'm actually writing about IFP-395T, not 195T. But I heard that they are built on same mechanism so I guess 195T is also incredibly great product.

First, 395T has joystick like button to make it easy to FF and Fast rewind and change volumes. Further, it works like L3 button in PS 2 controller. (Which means you can actually press that joystick button to open navigation menu.) Blue LCD supporting four lines allows you to locate file by browsing through folder. (Folder system makes it extremely easy for you to find files especially when you are having like more than 100 songs - Typical for 512 MB player:))

Second, the design is sooooo great! This is wonderful. I hate to say this but I think 395T looks way much cooler than 195T. Sound is wonderful!!! I heard that Samsung Yepp 55's sound power is just 5 mW while that of Iriver is 12 mW. You can hear song twice as large as other machines!

I paid like 380 bucks but it is definitely worth it. I may have bought Clie which also support mp3. However, what's the point in having PDA? It would be pain in the ass to keep it whereever i go. I usually wear IFP-395T around my neck. This is sooo light that i sometimes even forgot i wear it.

And I look much cooler with this gadget!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, a wonderful mp3 player
Pros: Half a gig of memory, FM tuner, FM and voice recording, small size and light weight. It uses a single AA battery and will run for about twice as long as any hard drive player. I'm getting an estimated 12 hours of real world use per battery. Compared to hard drive based units this can't be beat. Since it uses a single AA, you won't have any down time waiting for the unit to charge. The software that comes with this unit is stable, intuitive to use and works as advertised. I use this mostly for audio books recorded at low but adequate bit rates. Usually 24-48 mbps mp3's. Half a gig will hold about 30 hours of audio books. More than enough to take on vacation. Sound quality is as good as my iPod. The controls are not as intuitive as the iPod or Rio500 but if you spend 20 minutes or so with the manual everything will make sense. Navigating through content is a breeze. It's firmware upgradeable to support other formats and add or change features. Battery life is outstanding. Cons: Pricey. Subjectively cheap materials. Metal endcaps and a lanyard ring would have been a nice touch in a product that costs as much as this. I'd guess they used plastic to keep the weight down but I'd gladly sacrifice a quarter ounce for something that has a more 'quality' feel. If you're close to the end of a long audio book and stop the player, it seems to think you're done. It loses the marker and requires you to search for where you left off. Frustrating. A dedicated bookmarking button would have been nice.

Conclusion: this is probably the first go anywhere mp3 player with enough memory and battery life to be truly useful. Battery life far exceeds any hard drive player and doesn't require an electrical outlet. Simply pop in an AA battery and you're good for at least an honest 10-12 hours. Feature packed and mature in design. Hard drive players like the iPod, Karma and Zen are in a different catagory and shouldn't be compared directly with solid state players. If you need gigabytes of storage you'll have to go with a hard drive player. If you're ok with about four hours of high quality music or ~30 hours of high quality audio books, the iFP-195T is probably the best choice at the moment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Technology Not There Yet
This is a very nice player. It's the first one that I've owned so I have nothing to compare to. However, I have used flash memory drives. In retrospect, I should have waited until they came out with USB 2.0 and the ability to PnP without having to install custom drivers (Like flash drive, digital camera etc.) Why they haven't adopted these technologies yet is beyond me.
Good: Usability, Sound, Battery life, Capacity.
Bad: USB 1.1. Packaged software did not work. Had to download latest version from vendor web site. Does not come up as PnP logical drive letter like a flash drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Player
I did my homework before buying an MP3 Player, and I'm glad I did as the iRiver iFP-195T is great! No complaints. It fits approximately 75 songs and with just one little AA battery you get at least 20+ hours. Once you get the player I strongly recommend going to iriver.com to upgrade the music manager and firmware so you can "organize" the music files into folders on the player. Nice extra feature is the FM turner....never thought I'd use it, but guess what - I did. Overall, great product, small/compact and has a great user-friendly desktop application for transfer and organization of mp3s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great things do come in small packages!
I purchased my iRiver iFP-195T unit over six months ago, and all I can say is...I love it! Small, sleek, easy to use...enough storage space for over 100 songs (seriously, who needs more unless they are traveling across country??) Requires one regular old double-A battery which lasts a long, long time. And the Sennheiser ear-bud headphones that come with it are incredible. You won't believe that that much bass can come out of two tiny little pieces of plastic.

If you are thinking about getting an iPod, think again. This little gem does the trick for a lot less money. But hey, if you need to impress your friends by carrying around your entire mp3 library, then look into the iRiver iHP 140 40GB Hard Drive MP3 player. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Flimsy
I've had mine since October. I never dropped it, and always kept it in a drawer when not in use. Depsite these precautions, the play button stopped working, and the casing is falling apart.

Save your money and get something sturdier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Constructed...
I have the iRiver iFP-390T which is very similar. It worked great for a while and could hold around 5 full length CD's. My problem with it is that they fall apart easily. I now have a non-working MP3 player and nothing to show for it. The warranty is only 30 days, I have had mine for around 90 days. The buttons on the top no longer work they are broken. If you push to hard or to often on them they will snap and break very easily. Save your money and get a better made and more durable MP3 player.

5-0 out of 5 stars For what it does, it's great!
In the days of the iPod and other double digit gig MP3 jukeboxes, you'd think that these puny 128MB flash players would be falling out of fashion. Wrong! These things are still popular, and the IFP-300 line is the best out there.

I bought this for several reasons: I wanted a music box a little more discrete than my aging CD player, and I wanted to be able to change my playlist easily and accomidate all the music I would want for a week. At this price, I got all I wanted and more. I can wedge this in my pocket, the batteries last very long, the sound quality is top-notch, and it comes with an FM radio and an excellent voice recorder.

When I encode the songs as 128kbps 44khz MP3s, I can fit about two hours of music on this jewel, which is enough for me. At that quality, my ears cannot discern the difference between that and a CD unless I'm deliberatly looking for the difference, which I never am and you probably won't be. I once fit 4 hours of music at 64kbps (long car ride), but I was able to discern an annoying degragation in quality.

A word of advice: in today's world, this particular MP3 player is taylored for me, but might not be for you. I have a modest CD collection which I can count on my fingures, and I can listen to the same song a hundred times and still enjoy it. If you have fourty CDs and can't bear to listen to the same song twice in one week or demand that your music be uncompressed, spring for an iPod. If you're someone like me but with a larger CD collection, consider this only a model with more memory. Also consider the new 700 line of MP3 players from iRiver. They seem to be basically the same as this one only different aesthetics and twice the battery life, at least according to the ads.

NOTE: When you buy this, download all the firmware updates from the iRiver website. One of the updates will let you mount the MP3 player as a removable drive in Windows as opposed to the third-rate propriatary software they expect you to use. I now just drag and drop my MP3s from iTunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest mp3 player in ILLINOIS, the COUNTRY, the EARTH!!!!
This product is the best mp3 player in the universe. It can do anything a good one can. It has a smashing cool design and the sound quality is wicked. The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't come with a home(case). I don't think that i'll ever get a different mp3 player. this little guy can go virtually anywhere. you can easily fit a couple into your pocket. If I could change one thing about it I would make it more expensive because the price is irresistable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite things!
I love this player! Mostly because it is so easy to use. It has a USB port for downloading and whatnot, but you don't need a computer to put songs into the player. You will need one if you want to reformat the songs (put them in order or files), but with this player you can record with the line in feature straight from a CD player or the built in tuner. The only way you get four hours of music on this player is if you really decrease the quality of recording, that's the best I can say it. So it really holds around two hours if you want great, ungrainy sound and all. But it's light and pretty tiny so it fits easily into a pocket or crowded purse.
It's great! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Quit after writing one disc; expensive technical support
I bought this to make a dozen CD's of a group bicycle tour vacation photo's - after burning the first CD the drive failed to recognize the presence of any additional CD's. I/O Magic charges $1.79/minute for technical support to your credit card - it cost me over $10 to be told to upload latest software (which they also charge for). Drive still defective and failed to recognize any CD's in tray, so had to return it. Expensive and time wasting lesson in extremely poor customer service. Exchanged for an Iomega that is working flawlessly. ... Read more
