1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING for OS X users
If you use OS X and buy this you will wind up pulling your hair out and then in an out of the way Iomega support page
(http://www.iomega.com/software/cdrwdrivers.html) you will find the following statement "Iomega HotBurn does not currently support Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.2."

THEN, they will try to sell you software at a "special price" only $34.95!

Or you have to buy Toast for $89.95. Plus no DVD software.

I wish I wasn't so cheap and had been willing to shell out the bucks for a Que Firewire drive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive advertising.
This product claims to play DVD's but what iomega fails to tell you is that no DVD software is included. You have to spend a long time on the ichat customer support site only to discover you have to pay more money for the DVD software. The more I use iomega products the more I am frustrated with their quality and customer service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could rate this a zero
I love Iomgea products. However, I could not get this to work with my network computer and after having several 1 on 1 live online chats with their so called tech. support I could not get anywhere with it. And after e-mailing them several times the response I received was a number to try which of course was not toll free. I ended up just sending this back to Amazon.com but, I was really hoping they could tell me what was wrong with it because I would love to have an external CD-RW/DVD-ROM on my network computer. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Mac Owner
I bought this CD-RW a little less than a year ago. I thought the price was right at the time, since it included a rebate at the time. I own a Mac G3 (blue & white) running OS 8.6. I bought this so I could back-up some of the more important things from my hard drive. I think it's a bit slow, and I agree with what others have said about waisting most of you CDR's. I have been able to save my photos folder fine, but I can't seem to back-up anything like Palm Pilot info, e-mail, or any of the other things I want stored before doing a fresh install of my OS. When I try a burn in "simulation mode", many times my computer just locks up. I'm hoping the OS upgrade will help with some of these bugs.

If you are buying a CD-RW for it's looks and don't plan to use it for anything too big, this will work fine. If you need a serious machine, that you can use for back-up, don't bother with this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This burner rocks. Very simple to set up and use, works perfectly with my Macintosh. I had the whole thing installed and was burning my first cd within 30 minutes. Yes, you will receive buffer underruns if you try to burn an audio cd at 4x - but I challenge you to find a USB burner where you don't - it's the nature of USB.

The USB interface is modular, so if you upgrade to a new computer with Firewire, or the forthcoming USB 2.0, simply buy a new module and the burner is ready to go with the new interface.

I highly recommend this burner, set-up was a snap, the included Toast software is very intuitive - and it looks FIERCE sitting on the desktop.

2-0 out of 5 stars I hink the Iomega Predator 4x4x6 Sucks
Last year I bought from dabs.com the said ext CDRW, initially I've had no probs & thought it great.Once one learns to burn music at the slowest speed.
Now though I'm going through backup of backups of CDR discs as well the drive's conflicting with the PC ie causing it to freeze.
Iomega support are no help, to them their drives are perfect, it's the PC's fault.
I think not.
The moral is DON'T BUY IOMEGA....

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from Iomega
Firstly, a pain to install. I thought maybe my fault and let go. Then some CDs burn fine, some CDs end up in trash. On calling their support, they said to shut down everything else(luckily I was allowed to breathe) while the burning is happening. That did not help and I had to buy certain CDs from certain manufacturers. But no, that does not help buffer overrun issues. Still I could backup the lovely photos of my first baby sometimes. And then one fine day the damn thing stopped working. Support said buy another device. And here I am shopping again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iomega 31119 Predator External USB CD-RW Drive
Very compact and fast CD Drive. The only setback that I have noticed is at times the computer needs to be re-started in order to retrieve the CD from the drive. It doesn't happen often. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants a reasonably priced, compact, easy to use, fast CD Drive performer! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Super DVD compatibility problems
The Super DVD burner has excellent build quality. A quite and smooth CD and DVD player. That said, do not buy or install until you have checked with iomega to see if CDW/RW DVD drive in your computer will not conflict with the iomega's burn programs. If their is a conflict and you attempt to install, you will not only discover that the burner will not work but you will spend hours patching the Windows XP burner program and reinstalling your present burner program. The DVDIT! and Hot Burn programs are loaded conflicts. Some vidio editing programs you may own (or plan to buy) will just not work. Iomega's support is fast but take their advice with caution. Some conflicts are "fatal" and you may end up with a burner that will sit on the shelf until you buy a new computer. A card that is packed with the burner states: "STOP! DO NOT return this product to the store! If you hit a snag, we can help you." If you are not 'up and running' and their techinical staff has not solved the snag in 48 hours, DO RETURN the product to the store. Five stars for build quality, three stars for technical help, one star for compatability of their burning programs.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst product I've ever purchased
Where to begin? It gave my Dell the Blue Screen of Death, locked up my computer, evaporated my active desktop. After trying to work with Iomega for 4 months, they sent me a replacement. No more Blue Screen, but no DVDs, either, just a huge pile of coasters. When the bundled MyDVD burning software tries to burn, it spits out the DVD and I get a "device error" error message. And yes, we downloaded the firmware update. Warning! Before you purchase, go go www.iomega.com and read the user forum for this product. The near unanimous verdict: completely nonfunctional product. I trusted Iomega, but don't make that mistake yourself.

1-0 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment.
This is a very useful product - if you like making $3 coasters. I was in need of an external DVD writer, and purchased this product in part based on Iomega's experience and reputation in the portable device space. I am a network engineer by trade, so needless to say I am somewhat resourceful in troubleshooting P.C. hardware and O/S issues. I have try have tried to create NTSC DVDs from projects created using the Sonic MyDVD software that is bundled with the device, as well as Intervideo WinDVD Creator, using several different PCs running both Windows 2000 and XP (fully patched). So far I have been able to create exactly ONE usable DVD in approximately 15 attempts. The problem is roughly the same each time - the software locks at the end of the burn phase. And, in typical device-with-bundled-software fashion, neither Iomega or Sonic's online tech support offers advice or even recognition of an issue. If you still want to roll the dice with this thing, my advice would be to purchase from somewhere where you have had good experience with the return policy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment
I've owned a lot of Iomega products over the past 10 years and have come to trust them. But this drive is a major disaster.

I have experienced most of the problems that other reviewers have complained about, including random hangs while writing, failure to recognize various types of media, undocumented I/O errors, and bizarre software problems about media sizes being miscalculated, and terribly slow write/format speeds. I will say that when I contacted their tech support, they suggested I switch the unit from my USB2.0 PCI card to the motherboard's USB1.1 port, and it did work much better, but of course it was unacceptably slow.

They do warn on their support page that USB2.0 add-in cards are not supported, but only built-in USB hardware. I don't know if that actually makes sense from an engineering standpoint; it sounds like a dodge to me. Why do all my other USB2.0 peripherals -- including an Iomega CDRW unit -- work on this same card? My guess is that this product was badly designed and probably rushed to market.

The only good things about it are HotBurn is pretty easy to use, the unit is quiet, and it looks nice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Iomega Super DVD 4x Writer All- format
First off let me apologize for my rant , this Iomega "super " DVD RW would not work. Nothing but problems. The thread to Iomega was getting a little long for me to bear. Their answers boiled down to changing my brand new computers registry "yeiiikkkks". The computer would not recognize the drive. I'm sending it back to Amazon. I don't know about you but I don't like a company that field tests it's products on the public. Great looking paper weight. Hope this helps. P.S. they sent me more offers for more paper weights. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Works Fine
This RW is okay. I began recording CDs within minutes (after the setup).... the only problem is the size of the external drive is quite large considering they don't have to be this large anymore. This is 3 or 4 times the size of a portable CD player. Also, the software installation takes quite a long time, but nothing went wrong.

And although it says it writes at 12x, i can only record at 4x.... not sure what the problem is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Multiplatform Transferring
I bought this one on a whim one day and it has been one of the best computer electronic purchases I have ever made. I attend graduate school online and when I am traveling, I am forced to upload my class work via any available computer. I am able to do my work on my XP Laptop and upload my work to any other Windows computer but the really nice thing is that I am able to use Macs as well. There is not a hassle or requirement for reformating. Each system recognizes the mini as soon as I plug it in. It has saved me much time and many headaches. I should also mention that it doesn't take up more than one USB port due to its slim size like some do and that is a great advantage as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I got the mini drive to use for school work. The mini drive is extremely easy and way faster than burning a CD. You just plug it in and drag files. 128mb was almost always enough space for everything I needed. The only thing I didn't like is the key chain part that attatches to the cap. It was handy at first, but it quickly broke off.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't put this on your key chain
I bought the Iomega 128 MB USB Drive last fall and really loved it...until I put it on my key chain and lost it when I sent the car through the car wash. The design is such that the cap secures to the key chain, but then the port (where all the files are) just snaps into the cap. So, if someone gets a hold of your keys or key chain, they can yank the port away from the cap and leave the keys hanging there in the car with the cap attached but no files! Everyone can recognize these mini drives now and know what they are so they are easy to STEAL right out from under you. And, at $50-100 per purchase, it's not so easy to run out and buy another. If you get do get a mini drive (and they are very handy) just keep it locked up, in a purse or pocket...not hanging from your key chain or from a backpack...it might get snagged. Perhaps in the future a better design would help solve this issue. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Designed for computer users who need the portability and convenience of a standalone CD recorder and player, the Iomega external 16x10x40 USB 2.0 CD-RW drive offers satisfactory performance, rugged styling, and colorful good looks. It isn't quite as fast as an equivalently rated internal CD-RW drive, nor is it completely free of the teething pains surrounding the new USB 2.0 technology. But for situations where a built-in CD-RW is either impractical or impossible--notebook computers are a prime example--the Iomega external 16x10x40 is a versatile and cost-effective solution.

Sporting a unique dark purple color scheme and a large and curvy 10-by-7-by-2-inch profile, the unit makes a dramatic visual impression. But more importantly, it easily adapts to almost any computing environment. To connect it to your PC, Mac, or notebook, you merely install its software driver, run its three-foot data cable into any available USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 port, and plug its power cord into an AC outlet. The computer will recognize it as a standard drive and assign it the next available letter in your drive chain. Alternately, you may use the device strictly for audio CD playback by forgoing the USB cable and connecting the included audio cables directly to your sound card's inputs.

To burn data or audio discs, we utilized the included version of Iomega's HotBurn, a basic CD-writing utility designed to appeal to those who value ease-of-use over advanced operations. Although HotBurn offers a rookie-friendly interface, convenient drag-and-drop file transfers, and basic functions such as audio/data burning and CD-label creation, we couldn't perform complex procedures such as WAV file editing or volume normalization.

In action, the Iomega external 16x10x40 runs as quietly as most internal drives and continues to record and play smoothly even when being severely bounced about. It is important to remember, however, that the unit operates only as fast as your computer setup will allow. When connected via a traditional USB 1.1 port, it functions at a relatively sluggish 4x write speed, 4x rewrite speed, and 6x read speed. But when connected to a USB 2.0-capable system, those figures jump dramatically. Although our tests indicated that Iomega's claim of 16x write, 10x rewrite, and 40x read USB 2.0 performance seemed somewhat exaggerated in real-world scenarios, the unit generally performed at double to triple its USB 1.1 speed when linked to a USB 2.0 port. Not quite what we had hoped for, but impressive speeds for an external CD burner nevertheless.

What if your system doesn't support USB 2.0? You have a few options, including utilizing your slower USB 1.1 ports, swapping your motherboard for one with integrated USB 2.0 capability, or purchasing a separate USB 2.0 adapter card. The latter may make the most financial sense for many users, as multiport USB 2.0 adapter cards are readily available for a fraction of the cost of a state-of-the-art USB 2.0 motherboard.

Yet no matter which connection you choose, this and all USB 2.0 devices are susceptible to the quirks of the new technology. Microsoft, for example, opted to exclude USB 2.0 support from its original boxed copies of Windows XP, and therefore forces users to search its site for newly developed software drivers. Similarly, as we discovered during testing, some motherboard chipsets aren't particularly friendly to multiple USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices. Fortunately, Iomega's toll-free support line offers plenty of helpful one-on-one advice.

Though it seems slightly slower and a bit more prone to connectivity quirks than an equivalently rated internal CD-RW device, the Iomega external 16x10x40 USB 2.0 CD-RW drive is nevertheless a strong option for environments that require a standalone CD burner/player. --Gordon Goble

Pros:

  • Rugged design
  • Futuristic style
  • Perfect for computers that can't handle an internal CD device
  • USB 2.0 connection substantially faster than a USB 1.1 CD burner
Cons:
  • Not quite as fast as its performance ratings would indicate
  • Not completely immune to some USB 2.0 teething pains

4-0 out of 5 stars Iomega Panther External USB 2.0 CD-RW Drive
I read the existing reviews before I made my purchase and I must tell you I was almost intimidated into not buying this device. I followed the advise of the person who suggest not using the enclosed software so I downloaded an evaluation copy of Nero 5.5. The device installation instructions say to load the software first before cabling up the device. Not being one to follow instructions I did the opposite. I found out why the instructions said to load the software first. Windows detects the new hardware and looks for the driver which it cannot find. I even tried searching the CD disk for the driver but it must be compressed and I could not load it that way. So I disconnected the device and then loaded the included software and then cabled up the drive. Next I uninstalled the software that came with the device and downloaded an evaluation copy of Nero 5.5.... I had to locate the Nero executable file and drag it to my desktop to create a shortcut. I had no trouble in burning data CDs (have not tried music yet). I do have one bothersome message that pops up everytime I double click on the Nero Icon on my desktop but I have emailed the Nero folks and hope to have that cleared up before too long. As far as the device itself, I saw nothing flimsy about its construction nor any connector problems that someone else found. Sometimes when things don't go right we tend to lose objectivity; so take what is said in the negative reviews with a grain of salt.
One week later. I did not get a response from Nero yet which is a bad sign. But I did find the reason for the message box that I was getting from their help file--a driver was not bundled with the download. I found the driver on their web site, downloaded it and put it in the right Windows (W98) folder and the message went away. I've burned both data and music format discs with the Nero software and have had no problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Driver Confusion
Once this thing is installed, it works great. However, I had trouble installing the drive because Windows could not find the driver on the installation CD. Customer support insisted that the driver was in the HotBurn software. I finally downloaded the driver from the Iomega website. After running a Windows Update and updating the Intel USB chipset from the Intel website, I was able to get Windows to search for the driver. Still not found on the CD and HotBurn does NOT install the driver. I finally found it and installed it from Windows/Drivers. That's where the Iomega .exe download put it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reliable CD burner
I do not use this drive with a USB 2.0 port; I've just plugged it into the "old fashioned" USB in the back of my computer. It's the second CD burner I've gotten in the recent past, the first (by Archos) worked only sporadically, and driver problems which the manufacturer could not resolve jammed up my computer's operating system (Windows 98 SE). The Iomega burner, by contrast, connected without a problem to my computer and has worked reliably since. I use it to burn audio CDs, store images, and back up the computer. It performs admirably and (despite the fact that I'm not using the super-fast USB 2.0 connection) quickly in all of these areas. I give it four stars because of the Iomega Hot Burn software which comes in the package -- although I haven't tried to use this software, I read a few reviews of it and concluded that it's too limited to be useful. Instead, I installed Roxio's Easy CD Creator which works fine (the version I installed, Easy CD Crator Platinum 5.0, did not immediately recognize the hardware, but an upgrade from the Roxio website quickly solved that problem).

1-0 out of 5 stars bad piece of hardware
I thought this was going to be a good product but it does nothing but eat cds and spit them out. I had the product for a year and only made 1 cd of proably about 25 before I gave up. It would never work with my new thinkpad and xp and technical support was horrible. Tech support kept telling me to turn off things in the background that typically are running in any windows operating system etc. I got an old fart who kept explaining to me that he had been ding this for 30 years instead of getting the product to work. I sent product back and got rembursed. I won't buy any of this company's products again because this was such a headache.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding product for Macs
i have 2 Imacs and 1 iBook. all operating systems are
9.0 to 9.1. All are usb 1.1. It took about 5 minutes to load the software and i was doing back-ups in 6 minutes. tremendously easy to use. as reviewed elsewhere, it's true that on the mac it doesn't do RW and it only tells you this in the install manual but at the price of CDs, I soon realized that i didn't care. after reading all of the negative reviews of iomega products, i can only think that those users are mired in the mess of PC world and are blaming the iomega for the [things] that microsoft has foisted on them. great product!!! ... This Zip 250 MB USB/FireWire Drive Kit is perfect for the Mac or PC user who demands the speed of FireWire along with the near-universal connectivity of USB. Iomega's small and sleek 250 MB drive now has even more of the go-anywhere flexibility that mobile users demand.

The Zip 250 USB drive offers an ultrathin and mobile design that meets the high-capacity storage needs for both PC and Mac users. At 1 inch thick and weighing just under a pound, the Zip 250 USB drive can accompany the most demanding mobile computer user. Connect the drive conveniently with the industry-standard USB port, or for mobile users, the drive also provides a USB-powered PCMCIA interface.

The FireWire adapter will greatly increase the read speed of the Zip 250 USB drive from 0.9 MBps to over 2.0 MBps. It's plug-and-play, so you won't have to reboot every time you connect the drive to your PC or Macintosh. In addition, desktop systems with six-pin FireWire ports are capable of providing host power to the Zip 250 USB drive via the FireWire adapter. Hence, there's no need for a power supply. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rear adaptor funky, but it works
I got the FireWire version of the Zip drive.
My previous purchase of the USB version has been flawless.
The FireWire version is a little funky because the firewire interface doesn't look "normal/integrated", there is this funky adaptor that attaches to the rear and appears to convert the firewire to something else (looks like SCSI).
The manner in which this adaptor attaches to the rear is a little precarious (looks like it won't stay hooked reliably).
But I in fact had no problem getting the software to work, and the drive has not given me any problems at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expect from a firewire/usb product
After first getting a USB portable zip and found it to be extremely slow, I returned it and bought a firewire Iomega zip. As I need it to be portable, I don't want it to require a power adapter. I was dismayed when I found out that the USB version requires a power adapter. While the firewire one does not, it is not that much significantly faster than the USB version. It is also bulkier than the USB version because of the adapter. It takes 7 minutes to transfer a 56 Mb file--not what I expect from a firewire connecting device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
I needed an external drive in a hurry, and initially turned to external CD burners. However, after reading numerous reviews across a variety of sites, it quickly became obvious that none of the external burners were up to the task. According to reviews, most of them (HP 8000 series, Iomega Predator, etc...) suffered from reliability problems, and to exacerbate the matter further, transfer speeds were reportedly slow. Hence, in desperation, I turned to other forms of storage. To my delight, Iomega's Zip 250 USB/Firewire drive has performed excellently! I haven't had a chance to test out the firewire capability, but all I can say is that I am extremely pleased with its USB performance! I have successfully transferred all my files from my work computer (running on Windows NT) to my home computer (running on Windows 98), and there have been no software or reliability issues at all. Good going, Iomega! Now, if only they could pull their stock out of the pits........ ... Read more
