1-0 out of 5 stars Buy a Logitech
This mouse is nice and comfortable, the scroll wheel is smooth and thats about all that is good. The mouse falls asleep like the other reviewers said and it is extremely annoying to try to get it to wake up every five seconds. I just bought a Wireless Logitech mouse for my laptop and have tried my friends Logitech mouse and they are both smooth and dont fall asleep. You move it and they move right away. With this IBM you have to click and click and wait then it decides to wake up. Horrible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amen to that One Fatal Flaw
As has been discussed in other reviews, that "fall asleep" attribute is extremely annoying. Sometimes you feel like you need to slam it against the wall to wake the blasted thing back up. I returned mine for a refund.

I suppose it's a "feature" to preserve battery life. I think I can afford to buy a few more batteries, thank you. If the manufacturers really want this "feature," then they should have provided a mechanism that allows the user to configure it. E.g., "go to sleep" after 15 minutes of inactivity instead of 2.

I should add that the software package that comes with it has problems as well. In particular, there's a "sonar" feature that locates the mouse pointer for you when you press the "Ctrl" key. Unfortunately, this feature "breaks" too easily, especially if you try it after the mouse has "gone to sleep." Then it won't work again until after a reboot. (My system is Win98 1st Edition; obviously your mileage may vary on other versions of Windows.)

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, except for one HUGE flaw
At a first glance, this is a good mouse just because it's wireless and optical. It's comfortable, and the scroll wheel is just smooth enough. Unfortunately, it has one big problem which forced me to return the mouse and exchange it for the far super Logitech MX700 mouse. The problem is this: the mouse falls asleep if you leave it alone for a minute or so, and then you have to move it quite a bit before it wakes up. So, whenever you want to move the mouse after leaving it alone for a bit, it just doesn't respond for several seconds. This is incredibly annoying. So I wouldn't recommend this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Support Accelleration!
I installed an IBM Optical Wireless Mouse on my work pc. It seemed to work just fine until I noticed that it kept losing the Medium acceleration setting. Every few minutes the mouse started to move very slowly. To get it across the screen I had to pick it up and stroke it across a portion of my desk several times. Every time this happened I went into the mouse setup dialog and found that the acceleration had changed from Medium to None. If I re-selected Medium the mouse worked normally until the next incident. This interval of good acceleration varied from several minutes to over an hour.

When I called the Mouse's Tech Support the Tech said "Oh, that mouse doesn't support acceleration because it runs at such a high frequency".

How do you like that double-talk to excuse a piece of junk?!

I made the mistake of buying 2 of these lousy mice. The other one I installed on my home pc and the acceleration worked fine. This mouse was installed in a PS/2 port under Windows 2000. This machine runs 2 operating systems. When I tried to install the mouse's driver under Windows 98 the install routine abended. Once this happened Win98 stopped recognizing the mouse. I tried to uninstall the driver but Win98 did not seem to know anything about the driver. I switched to a plain wired un-optical PS/2 mouse and Win98 did not recognize that mouse either. When I booted Win2K it locked up on the sign-on screen and would not recognize the keyboard or the mouse. When I forced Win2K into Safe mode it hung up the same way. I finally discovered that the only way to get Win2K to function was to unplug the mouse. At this point I went to RadioShack and bought a corded USB mouse and both Win2K and Win98 have been working ever since.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE PURCHASE AN IBM WIRELESS OPTICAL MOUSE! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars IBM Video Cam from Earthlionk
I did get this camera (the writer preceding this review is in error on one part), the USB version as an inducement to subscribe to Earthlink for a short period of time with a penalty for early termination. With the junk camera I received, I'd like to see them "enforce" a penalty! Biggest problem is that it's focus will not improve as well as the lighting problem and both of these problems are mentioned in other reviews. I have a couple of other cameras that are less to purchase if price is a consideration but both are substantially better cameras. My favorite is the QuickCam although mine is the parallel port version that creates a problem for me only because I can't keep my printer and camera connected to my PC at the same time. Hence, the other two are USB with converters to switch them to the serial port if I should desire. I bought my son the Logitech camera (USB). Software program for the Logitech is great also. The IBM installation software gave me a migraine at first but I finally got the thing installed and it works but the picture is really poor quality and no way to fix it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't EVER buy one of these.
This is possibly the worst "webcam" that has ever existed on this planet. For starters, unless you are using the camera in bright (and I mean solar-flare bright) light, you probably won't even get a recognizable image. Most of the time what you will see on your screen is a black and red mess moving at approximately 2 fps. Two frames every second is obviously way too slow for any kind of video, and the optics in this camera make it unsuitable even for still snapshots.

I originally purchased this cam because it was one of those free-after-rebate deals, but even the sales tax I had to pay was too much for this piece of junk.

If you want a usable webcam, buy a Logitech.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money...you could do better!
I purchased the program origionally without doing my homework. At the time it was an 'ok' camera, but I would never buy another one like this. The reason that I purchased it is due to the 'stitcher' program (for making 360' Quicktime video files)that was bundled with it. ~ At the same time "you get what you pay for". Most people want a high quality camera, but don't feel the $110 (or more) for that technology is worth the price. Even so...it would be nice if these 'low end' cameras would do a better job.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only Reason I use it, It was Free
and I want my money back.
A friend of mine gave me this for X-mas and It seems to crash Paltalk all of time. Focus is always an issue and it seems to zoom the picture too much

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better buys out there
I received this IBM webcam free when I signed up for broadband with Cox. For FREE it's fine. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay for even the shipping on it. It say's 30 FPS, but it doesn't keep up to even some slow hand clapping. Images are slow and grainy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DOS still has a future!!
There is still a place for DOS in the computing world - older
systems, with limited resources, that are doing basic word
processing, database management, text-only Internet access,
and telemetry support - and PC DOS 2000 is the perfect OS
to keep these machines chugging along ... Y2K compliancy,
new programming, ease of use, and many utilities.

Just a comment on the Warning! review by Dr. Ronald Gibbons -
IBM makes it very clear that they do NOT recommend using
PC DOS 2000 with Win95 or Win98.

The following is quoted from IBM's FAQ page

"Can I run PC DOS 2000 with Windows 95 / Windows 98?"

"Unlike Windows 3.x which requires a separate operating
system (DOS), Windows 95 and Windows 98 have combined
DOS and Windows into an integrated product. It is not
recommended that you install PC DOS 2000 on a system
running Windows 95 or Windows 98."

2-0 out of 5 stars Warning!
The product MIGHT be good, but I never had the opportunity to use it. The program loaded witjout problem, but then I received a message indicating that PC DOS 2000 does not support the version of windows that I have loaded. I have Windows 95 and MS Office. No matter what I did I could not load thoses programs, nor could I return to DOS 6.0.In the end I had to reformat Drive C: and completely reload all of my software. There should have been a warning about which versions of software that PC DOS 2000 supports.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOS is not dead
PC-DOS 2000 is a minor upgrade to PC-DOS 7.0, the version that came out as Windows 95 was released. This version is Y2K compliant and supports the new Euro currency symbol. It comes with many features not associated with DOS such as pen support and PCMCIA support. It also comes with a GUI backup program, Stacker 4.0, IBM antivirus, REXX programming and a plethora of utilities.Runs on anything from an 8088 upwards.I use it on my laptop with Windows for Workgroups 3.11.Even though it's a 486 I find it faster than the Pentium laptops my friends have that are running Win9x or WinME.I credit the speed in part to PC-DOS 2000.After 17 years of tweaks and improvements to DOS, PC-DOS 2000 is honed for speed and minimal memory usage. And it's just about perfect. ... Amazon.com Review

Fully compatible with the Palm OS platform, the IBM WorkPad c3 stores 6,000 addresses, five years' worth of appointments, 1,500 to-dos and memos, and 200 e-mails. Plus, it sports a superslim black anodized-aluminum case and leather screen protector.

In order to clear up any confusion regarding the IBM WorkPad c3, it's worth mentioning that this organizer is a Palm V, but with IBM packaging and a black finish. The WorkPad's black aluminum casing is an elegant alternative to the Palm V's silver exterior but still retains the attractive and popular Palm V shape. Like most Windows CE PDAs, the WorkPad c3 is smaller and lighter than the Palm III series organizers.

The WorkPad has a sharp screen and with contrast-variable backlighting, which makes it easy to see in both low-light and bright-light conditions. The rechargeable lithium-ion batteries charge while the unit sits in its HotSync cradle.

To set up the device, we followed the Getting Started card: we plugged in the AC adapter (which is permanently connected to the HotSync cradle), connected the cradle to the serial port on our PC, inserted the WorkPad into the cradle, and installed the CD-ROM software.

Working with the WorkPad c3's built-in applications was easy and intuitive; we easily synched the WorkPad with our PC-based e-mail, used the Graffiti character-recognition software, and worked with the Address Book, Date Book, Memo Writer, To-Do List, and all the other applications that have made the Palm OS so popular. The WorkPad c3 comes with 2 MB of nonexpandable memory, a tradeoff to its slim design. While testing the WorkPad, the only drawback we noticed is that the removable leather screen protector tends to press against one of the front-mounted buttons.

In order to distinguish the WorkPad from a Palm V, IBM improved the IrDA port. This allows you to synchronize the WorkPad directly with a compatible PC using the infrared transmitter instead of the HotSync cradle. However, mention of this intriguing innovation is buried in a text file on the software CD-ROM and there is no mention of it in the printed manuals. IBM also includes Lotus EasySync 3.0 on CD-ROM.

All in all, the WorkPad c3 is a great and fun-to-use PDA, which is not surprising since it follows the design of the Palm V--the most popular PDA yet.

Pros:

  • Handsome black design
  • Sharp, backlit screen
  • Built-in lithium-ion battery pack

Cons:

  • Memory not upgradable
  • Leather screen cover rests against buttons

4-0 out of 5 stars A superb organizer in budget range
I find the IBM WorkPad c3 smaller and lighter than the Palm III that one of my friend uses. Its contrast-variable backlighting really helps me to see the figures in variable light conditions such as when I am standing directly under a light in my office or walking in the alley which is not that well lit. An added advantage is lesser strain on my eyes because of its sharp screen. I guess the WorkPad c3 is limited to its 2 MB of non-expandable memory as the manufacturer could not design to fit a bigger memory in its slim design. How am I going to upgrade its memory to a larger capacity I do not know but I guess its one of the trade off that one has to bear in relation to the overall relatively low cost of this product. One particular feature that I find very handy is the synchronization ability of WorkPad directly with a my PC through the infrared transmitter this is a valuable feature that comes specially during my busy days letting me bypass its HotSync cradle connection.

The Graffiti pad is similar and maybe same as the other Palm organizers so you donot get any additional benefits when compared to competitive products. I am next eyeing with interest the portable key board advertised on the Amazon website that lets this PDA sits in a top slot and lets you enter your data as if you would do on any PC. This is specially useful for entering my expense report and data. And another tip: the money that I saved in buying this organizer instead of Palm V helped me buy some accessories for it. I was warned by some friends about possibility of getting a model with a faulty battery or a screen but luckily that did not happen and I am enjoying using my WorkPad C3. ... Read more
