First impression generally positive
I have owned this system for about 48 hours now. Setup was standard... almost. Since it doesn't come with a DVD player, they furnish no cables to allow you to connect one to it. No RCA, no S Video, no fiber optic cable. (In fact, come to think of it, I don't recall an S Video connection on the back of this unit. I'm no expert, so I don't know if this is a bad thing or not.) There are a TON of input ports, though, including two fiber optic inputs for your DVD / CD and cable / satellite. Anyhow, setup required two visits to my local hardware store to pick up the necessary cables, and I am now fully connected. Also, so long as I am talking cables, I am pleased to point out they included higher-gauge speaker wire (although not quite enough of it).

Sound is acceptable, for a $300 unit. I don't think anyone would mistake it for a much costlier piece of equipment, but for what I consider a bargain-basement home theatre system, it's pretty good. The Sub stays busy, even while watching golf. I am disappointed that my digital cable system did not have a fiber optic output from the box, but that is a different issue, and obviously not the fault of the Yamaha.

The interface to set your system settings is a little cumbersome. It took me a number of attempts to successfully define my speaker landscape, room size, and all that. I do appreciate that the remote seems quite capable of subsuming the responsibilities of other remotes. It was easy to get it to

The MCX-1000 stores music and broadcasts it wirelessly to one or more specially designed microsystem receiver in your house. Each receiver system (or "client") consists of the Yamaha MCX-A10 digital audio terminal coupled with any pair of stereo loudspeakers, or Yamaha's matching, stylish MCX-SP10. Using a multiclient system, all members of a home can store their music in a central location, create playlists, custom CDs, and digital sound files from vintage vinyl records, and wirelessly transmit them anywhere in the house.

Capable of storing around 1,000 CDs (using MP3 compression at a very listenable 160 kbps), the MCX-1000's self-contained 80 GB hard drive provides instant access to a vast array of your favorite music. The server's bits are yours to configure: save your music in CD-quality linear PCM digital audio (it'll hold an impressive 133 hours of CD-quality audio) or convert it internally to MP3 at rates of 160, 256, or 320 kbps. Another TIVO
I can't say enough about this product. I liken this to the enthusiasm most have with Tivo. I bought it last summer when it first shipped. My first one did have a hard drive problem after a couple of days but Yamaha was incredibly responsive and shipped me a brand new one overnight. I was actually very surprised at how easy it was to "get going"....less than 15 minutes including loading my first CD to the hard drive.
Using it is also so straightforward that my kids were able to use it after only a couple of minutes of coaching...they all have their own playlists now which they just love. I actually moved out of my house for a remodel project and set it up in the temporary housing without incident. Also I've gone through one product firmware upgrade and the addition of one "client" also without incident. I have two "clients" in the house and they kids love the ability to play their playlists at the same time in two different rooms.
A couple of things to note...you really need a TV monitor hooked to the server to effectively navigate the menus to do anything more than "play" or "record" (which most people will likely do anyway). Also be aware of the "recording" and "burning" rules/constraints before buying so your expectations are set appropriately if you like to "burn" playlists to CD's for use on portable devices.

I bought one of the MusicCast systems as soon as it was available (after drooling over it at a couple of trade shows). The first thing I did was upgrade the harddrive to 200GB. Required a trip by my dealer to my house, but it gave me much more capacity. The interface is very intuitive. It's very fast at copying from cd to the internal disk. In the background, it converts from PCM to whatever MP3 compression level you've set for default (I always use 320KB). You can remove the PCM version to save space (I keep it for critical listening stuff, but my wife doesn't care, so her PCM's are deleted immediately :-) I have a couple of the MCX-A10 terminals scattered around the house. I've had them connect through ethernet and wireless and seems to work fine for both. Yamaha just released a software update that allows access to the MusicCast database through a web browser. This makes it very easy to fix titles, artists, etc. (You can plug a keyboard into the MusicCast, but it requires powering down which is too much trouble for me). I have to say that the most annoying thing about the MusicCast is the GraceNote CDDB database. Yamaha's implementation is great. The CDDB database is a mess. Album titles are inconistent, misspelled, etc. That's why having the browser editing is such a big deal to me. The best endorsement I can give is that my wife really likes the MusicCast. She was sceptical, but after seeing how it works and being able to browse her music, she's sold. Highly recommended for anyone who just wants to be able to enjoy their music without having to deal with PC's. ... Read more

Great Quality, excellent product Except the Remote Control
I am not an audio expert but really liked the quality and features for both the receiver and the progressive scan DVD player. Speakers are good too. Some problems that I noticed during setup are:

1. For some reason the Yamaha Universal remote control that comes with 5540 AV receiver does not seem to control the Yamaha's own high end DVD player that came with YHT-800!! In fact, I had no problem programming Samsung DVD player with the Yamaha receiver.
2. The remote also does not work with Echostar (webtv) DishPlayer satellite decoder. So, I have to use three remotes - one for receiver, one for DVD and one for satellite box. The overall remote design is good though.
3. The s-video input signal on 5550 receiver only seems to work with Yamaha DVD. Worse even, it appears that you either need to connect all video components to S-video mode or all of them to RCA composite mode for Video-out-to-Monitor to work. My VCR has no S-video out. Hence, I had to use all RCA jacks and miss out on using high quality video output from my DVD and DBS box.

Overall, I like the YHT-800 system and hope to resolve remote control issues with Yamaha tech support. I hope I don't need to buy $150 learning remote from Yamaha. ... Read more

gorgeous looking, sounds ok too
I bought the YHT-450 to replace my Klipsch Promedia 4.1's. The amp in those burned out, probably due to the lack of external heat sink on the subwoofer where it is housed. It always made me nervous when the back panel of the subwoofer got too hot to touch. I was in no hurry to drop $350 on the newest Promedias.

I saw the YHT-450 at Best Buy. The wooden speaker boxes with piano black
finish caught my eye. Next to it, the silver plastic systems looked like
cheap garbage. I couldn't find any reviews online, and the specs were
reported inconsistently, even on the manufacturer's site. What a mess!

I did observe that the included receiver (HTR-5740) retails at $299 and
the subwoofer (YST-SW015) is $99, so I took a chance and bought it online,
figuring that I could just use my Klipsch satellites if the included speakers
turned out to be garbage.

The packaging is impressive. It just screams "quality!" In the big box are
four separate boxes, apparently retail packages for the receiver, subwoofer,
mains, and rears. My cats loved it.

Here are the specs, straight from the included documentation:

Mains(2): 6 1/2" pulp cone, 3 1/5" pulp cone, 4/5" soft dome, 50Hz-28kHz

My sound review is based solely on performance with cd audio. The 2.1 sound is very good! The larger woofers in the mains give body to the sound that my old Klipsch satellites lacked. The subwoofer is only fair, not delivering much below 40Hz. It does flesh out the uneven low-end response of the mains. With the cutoff set to the minimum value of 50, the sound is mostly crisp and cIear.

I plugged in two of the rear speakers to the front channels to see what they
could do. The mids are too strong. My old Klipsch satellites sound better.
The center speaker has the same tweeter as the mains, so it probably has more presence - I didn't try it as a main.

The receiver is powerful, with no noticeable distortion even at high volume.
I don't see where the advertised 700W comes from - I count 585W - but it's
plenty loud. I don't want much more than low distortion from the amplifier and I have no complaints here

In summary, I'm quite happy with this purchase. The piano-black finish on the speakers is gorgeous and classy. CD audio through the mains and the subwoofer sounds good enough to justify the price I payed, $407.55 delivered. The rear speakers are mediocre; a system sporting five of these would get 3/5 at best. Thankfully Yamaha came through with a nice-sounding pair of front speakers. I will eventually replace the subwoofer with one having better range. YHT - a great value
I just bought this system sans the DVD player (I already had a Sony 5-disc changer). I also had a JBL PB12 subwoofer that I added to this system in addition to the subwoofer that came with the system. In short, I think this is a great value for the money! The channel separation is clear, the speakers offer a crisp sound (though slightly tinny w/o my 12-inch sub). The receiver offers a myriad of customizable options that will allow you to tailor the sound to the size and dynamics of your room. I found the setup to be easier than anticipated as well. It took about 2 hours to unhook my previous system and get this one up and running.
