4-0 out of 5 stars Solid all around for the price
It's stylish and sound good enough, button on the remote a little bit confuse, and the digital volume control is bad one, reception of the antenna not as good as the other brands. Mp3 playback is good, even put mp3s in folders, some other brands dont.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent MP3 shelf system
Finally not 100% perfect but a SMALL minisystem that plays mp3 cd's yes i don't have to have my riovolt hooked up to my JVC FS series. .Notes though:
1) the unit is larger than you think (double the JVC microsystems) and of a cheaper build quality.
2) The unit plays mp3's filled cd's with greater than 130 tracks (64kbps to 256kps) (i have not filled them by album/directory (it says it reads eight directories deep), i just dump the stuff on cd and it plays it in order.
3) the orange/peach speaker covers are a BIT much
4) the power cord is NOT detachable, arggh
5) the display is not that easily readable (orange LCD with black letters). should have used a VFD (vacuum fluoro display)
6) an occasional jump in the track but all my tracks come from our friends at Kazaa so I am not sure of the quality to begin with. All they need to do is dump the cassette player (which i never use) shrink it by about 40% and add internet radio like the i200 boombox philips makes.
For the money it is a nice INEXPENSIVE small (not micro JVC executives size) haven't seen the rio 1000 yet but really the only one else in the minishelf with MP3 CD
7) sound quality actually not bad for the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars have had zero problems
ive had this clock for almost 3 years and i must say ive had no problems with it. you can choose b/w the radio or the buzzer alarm to wake you up. the display is nice and bright. the design is kinda cool too. it has a soft wire antenna for better radio reception. ive found it to be very reliable and good quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice dual alarm clock
I really like the dual alarm feature. The only problem I have with this clock is setting it is somewhat strange. There is a "fast forward" type button that you use to move forward and then if you overshoot your time you can slowly go backwards with a different button. It's kinda a pain sometimes if you just want to move your alarm or set the clock forward an hour. Besides that, it's a perfectly fine alarm clock.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute form...
...but a little lacking in function. My biggest problem might be a little nit-picky, but when the alarm is set on buzzer, if you turn it off, the radio does not stay on. This was one of the best functions of my old alarm clock. It keeps you from falling back into a dead sleep. Instead, I passed right out again. But it is a good-looking alarm clock. If that's important to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hip & functional
This clock is hip. In terms of functionality, the two alarms are convenient (especially if you're a snoozer) - you can set the first one to the radio, then the second one to the buzzer. And it'll let you snooze for a full hour! It's a little on the difficult side to set up the alarms for the first time, but after that easy to use. The only thing I don't like about it is the LCD tilts down a little bit (you can kind of tell in the picture) so needs to be set on a shelf/nightstand that is at least as high as your bed. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The Philips AJ393517 stereo CD clock radio is loaded with features thatwill ease you into the beginnings and endings of your day. The dual alarm can beset for two different wake-up times, and you have the choice of waking up toyour favorite CD, radio station, or beeper melodies. No matter what yourpreference is, the gentle-wake feature will gradually increase the volume toensure a gentle and certain awakening.

The minimum and maximum alarm volumecan be set to your requirements. In addition, when waking to CD, the silent CDalarm start wakes you to the sound of music instead of to the sound of the CDdrive searching for the right track. The track is already preselected and readyto play.

Still need a few extra minutes of sleep before starting your day? Then press the repeat alarm, which switches the alarm off for nine minutes. The24-hour alarm reset eliminates the need to manually reset the alarm after eachuse by automatically resetting the alarm function for the same time on the nextday.

The weekend sleeper function makes sure that either one or both alarmfunctions are switched off during the weekends. This clock radio has a self- powered backup. In case of an interruption in power, the clock will hold thecurrent time and the alarm settings for three minutes. With the sleep/slumberfeature, you can listen to music while falling asleep without the worry ofhaving to turn off the radio. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great alarm clock!
This alarm clock is the best out there. I have had a Sony Dream Machine for the longest time and I finally coudnt take it anymore, I needed a cd player!!! I am so amazed with the sound, it is just awesome! The alarm is loud enough to wake you, but not annoying. I'm telling you, if you do not buy this alarm clock, you will be sorry!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great features, but not a good alarm!
When I first bought this alarm clock, I loved it. I had returned six or more alarm clocks from the place I bought them because they were all lacking in fundamental features in one way or other. (Who wants to wake up to track 1 of a CD every time, really??!? Please Timex, hire some decent product developers!)

So when I got this home, I was thrilled. I love the weekend sleeper, the alarms which can be set completely independently (including two separate CD tracks), and the built-in self-recharging backup battery!

I even love the CD failover, when it works - if there's no CD in the drive, the alarm kicks in instead. The problem is, sometimes the CD will spin up and fail to play. I don't know why, it just sits and spins for 2 hours and doesn't play. But the alarm doesn't kick in either. So as an alarm clock, it's been a complete failure on several occasions. Like this morning. That's why I'm looking for a new alarm clock/cd player today.

Oh, and if you turn the volume more than 2/3 of the way up (it's a very loud player, very nice), the CD will skip. A lot. Why don't they take a cue from the portable CDs and build anti-skip in? I don't know.

2-0 out of 5 stars Button positions
This would be a good alarm clock, escept for the button positions. For some reason the designer put the 24hour alarm reset button right next to the small snooze button. Everytime I tried to press snooze and get a few more minutes of sleep, I turned the alarm clock off.

In the end I bought a funky rooster alarm clock with a huge snooze button and a chinese accent. It's weird, but it works great. This one has been relegated to the garage.

It's a good radio; it's a good CD player; it's a good clock; it even looks cool, but it' not a good alarm clock.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY VERY GOOD DEAL!!!
I got the stereo today and I LOVE IT! The size is a bit big for a desktop radio, but the sound is crisp and clear. I like the fact that Philips added a bright backlight feature, which displays the time. If you're looking for a good cd/clock/radio, look no further!

4-0 out of 5 stars My Mom Likes It
We got this for my mother to use as an alarm clock, and she raves about it. If you are looking for serious gear, this isn't it. However, it's got some volume and some sound. We used it to listen to the various Christmas CD while cooking dinner, and no one ever complained it wasn't loud enough. Definantly recommend as an alarm clock or for something to listen to around the house. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Overall this clock radio functions very well. I also like it's ease of use and sleek exterior. However, I was looking for something that could run on batteries in case of a loss of power. The description said "24-hour battery back up". I mistakenly assumed that this meant I could use this product with batteries. WRONG. The only function the batteries perform is saving the time and alarm settings. The alarm and radio do not function, and the time does not display with battery use. While I will keep the product, I would NOT have bought it if I had known that it could not run on batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philips clock radio
This is the best alarm clock/radio i have ever owned set it once and it's all good wake up to an alarm or the radio this one is a keeper and the price is perfect for the quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars value for money

1-0 out of 5 stars WRONG COLOR!
Very upset that the product I received was not the one pictured. It came in a dark grey, nothing like the photo, so basically, its marinating in my closet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but difficult to read
I love the digital radio w/10 preset station options AND dual alarm. It has waken us up very well the three days we've had it. Unfortunetly, it is impossible to read from across the room where we like to put our alarm clock. Otherwise, a great alarm clock.

3-0 out of 5 stars an okay clock
I love the dual alarms as I can keep my original Mon-Fri alarm set while setting the second alarm for those days when I must wake up at a different time. However, there's a flaw in the design of this clock. The snooze button is much too close to the alarm reset button. As someone who uses the snooze button A LOT, I have gotten to work late several times because, in a still sleepy state, I have pressed the alarm reset button instead of the snooze button.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice features, but low quality
This clock radio has a lot of nice features that allow for flexible options including the ability to set the alarm buzzer and/or the radio to come on at the same/different times. It is easy to set the time and the backlit green display is nice. Convenient items such as snooze bar, 5 preset radio buttons, and volume control all on top make it easily accessible. Now for why it only deserves 3 stars... The switch controls are really flimsy. It is very easy to turn a click too far and get the time setting menu instead of alarm setting... this was very annoying because I would often accidently change the time setting instead of the alarm. The radio preset buttons are much too small for how hard you have to push for them to work. And the speakers for the radio won't allow for much volume, though it is clear at low volumes. My previous clock radio by GE could go roughly twice as loud. Reception is comparable to most radios. Lastly, the color of the unit I received was NOT how it is pictured on Amazon. The actual unit I received is a dark gray color w/ silver radio buttons and a little silver color in the face. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Little System
I have had one of these for about two years as the system in our kitchen. Since we play music during most meals, it gets much use. The overall sound is pretty good, but the cassette player stopped working after about nine months. I used to be a stereo salesman, so I know about cleaning a cassette deck. I recommend it if you want to play CD's. I have not used the radio much, but when I have it seems to pull in the stations well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If only it had a 6 CD changer.....
I bought this stereo in May of 2001 and it has never failed or had any problems. The speakers are powerful and the CD player can play all CD formats except for CD-RW's (I really wish it could play CD-RW's.) I have never had a single problem with this system. When I purchased it I expected it to be able to switch between CD to Radio to Cassette with the remote but it doesn't do that at all. The remote does in fact work to change the Volume, Radio Prestets, Scan through chanels, play/pause the CD player, change track on the CD player, skip around on the song, it can also with the remote shuffle and Repeat songs. I would strongly recommend this stereo to anyone who needs just a simple radio, but I would not reccommend it to anyone who would frequently use it due to the fact that it doesn't have a 6 CD Changer (I wish I got one with a six CD changer) I got this stereo and it replaced an older Sony boombox model. I like the purchase I made into this and I will continue to buy Philip's products along with many other brands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds Great!
I debated whether I should spend $... more and get this one that had a remote control. I am glad I did - it is so much easier. The system really sounds good too. I could have gotten a large stereo but I like the fact that this is portable and the speakers detach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still rattlin the windows
I have had my philips c70 for 4 years. Me and my stereo have moved atleast 5-6 times. Its been through unruly children, teenagers, cats who like to lay upon it, and a terrier who likes the taste of the right speaker. After all that it still managed to get me kicked out of my apartment for "noise pollution". I LOVE IT!!!! It still works like it just came out of the box. I still use it as a home theater system. Except for the naw marks on the right speaker she still looks brand new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price for a surround sound system, but also..
This system has some really good bass to it, it has surround sound, and its $..., impressive. My uncle has this system, and I can easily say its the best system on the market in its price range.

It has a more contemporary look than most systems now; much easier to place in a room that gets visited a lot than say my JVC.

I haven't seen any frequency ratings on this, but while listening to a CD with a lot of high and low notes, (Pink Floyd-Wish you were here) it hit even the notes that are hard to hear, audible and clear.

Overall, a great system, and hard to find. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great system with few troubles
I was impressed with the sound quality of this little machine right from the start and I still am. Sounds great to use as a computer sound system. The included speakers sound very, very good, reproducing all registers very, very well except the very, very deepest bass <25Hz (but no system at this size does). The amplifier takes other speakers very well too - I almost doubt it is only 15x2 watts because it can pump some HEAVY BASS out of -=VERY LARGE=- loudspeakers and STILL maintain the high fidelity sound. By saying LARGE here i REALLY mean LARGE...

Radio works flawless, as well as the other functions. It includes a cool hall reverb which they call "incredible surround". This system is truly "all that and a bag of chips".

It will survive wet Swedish nights and is very appreciated on parties at its maximum volume. (By saying "wet nights" I am talking about both the air humidity AND the alcohol it gets exposed to, ahem.)

So why don't I give it five stars?

A couple of months ago the CD player started to refuse working any good. Today, I opened it up and did some advanced lubrication inside with silicone grease - and what do you know: now it works flawless again.

I would definitely buy another one if this broke down or got stolen, but there is a new model called the MZ-33, with bigger speakers and twice the amp power, which would be even better to get, I guess :)

My review might sound faked and overly positive, but I do NOT work for Philips. Just get one of these. It won't punch one big of a hole in your wallet and it will suit most people looking for a good, compact stereo system.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great sound, great design....What more you expect? You'll love this little giant !

5-0 out of 5 stars Small, compact design is key!
This micro system is perfect for a dorm or small apartment. I bought a second one to use at the office. It sounds terrific too - much more powerful than 30 watts! It has a lot of features that are usually found on higher priced systems, like digital sound control and the clock with alarm. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Recorder For The Money

You should read ALL of the instructions before attempting to connect or record. Use "DIGITAL AUDIO" CD's only. I found that all my CD players (Home, Office, Portable, and Car) Could play CD-R recorded Discs BUT none could play the CD-RW discs. That is the only draw back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs CD Digital Audio CD's
Handsome unit, well made and laid out. However, just so that you dont make the same mistake we did, it does require Digital Audio CD's and not the standard Recordables you can get for allot less money. I did not know this at the time I purchased it. I admit to not reading allot about electronics but I would consider myself at least an average consumer. You need Digital Audio CD's and, if you want to record from another CD Player digitally, be sure that player has digital output. If it has only Optical digital output, you then need a fiber optic chord which is rather expensive and does NOT come with this unit. So be aware of what else you will need before buying. Otherwise, a nice unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Product but not one to rush into...(making cds)
This cd-r has an array of uses that make your music life mucheasier. You can copy those cds that always seen to get scratched up,you can even record from other sources such as tapes, vinyl etc.

However, you must READ the instructions. I'm not kidding you about this. When I started, I encountered several upsets listed below. It is recommended that you use a CD-RW disc for the first time which I now recommend!

1. Improper wire hookup to my reciever. 2. Overloading your cd, YOU MUST LEAVE 7 seconds on the cd or it will not work 3. Cds skipping while recording.

Once those things are handled, it works like a charm...sound quality is even stronger when it is recorded on a good system (e.g. BOSE speakers and a good reciever).

1-0 out of 5 stars CDs would not work on other players
I purchased this machine "elsewhere". It made CDs easily, but when I tried to play them on any other player, it would not work (yes, duh, they were CDRs not CDRWs). I took the machine back to the store for a refund and can't find any other price-comparable machine. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

What should you expect from a five-disc CD changer priced under $100? Not much in the way of bells and whistles or extra features. Nevertheless, it's amazing that Philips has managed to pack so much reliable, basic performance into the CDC735 and still offer something in the way of extras. As advertised, this model will accept and play up to five CDs, letting you even change two of the discs without interrupting playback. You also get random play and programmability--up to 32 tracks.

While you don't get a digital output or a headphone jack, the CDC735 does come with a remote control that you can use to access discs and tracks and perform typical functions such as play and stop. The player-mounted remote sensor won't respond to remote commands that come from beyond its narrow 60-degree "window." This can pose a problem for users seated at an angle to the player's front panel.

For its part, the front-panel layout is clean and easy to use, but the build quality is flimsy. For example, when you push the Open/Close button, the tray takes its time opening, groaning as it goes. Disc change is slow but sure--the CDC735 still functions reliably.

The sound, while clear and clean, seemed to us somewhat lifeless and "slow" relative to high-end players. Given that superior-performing changers can be had for less than twice the price, we find it difficult to recommend the CDC735 as a main system CD player. However, if you're looking for a garage player or just multidisc convenience at an easy price, the CDC735 will keep the music coming for pocket change.

Pros:

  • Low price
  • Good value for the money
  • Lets you change discs without interrupting the disc in play
  • Full-function remote control

Cons:

  • Flimsy construction
  • Limited-range sensor window for remote control
  • No headphone jack
  • Slow, noisy changer mechanism

1-0 out of 5 stars What a piece of junk...
I purchased this CD player about a year ago. It stopped reading CD-Rs about two weeks in, and about half of my factory-burned CDs about three months in. The random play is also a joke - it picks about 7 songs from 5 CDs and plays them over and over and over again. Does anyone know of a 5-disc changer that actually plays songs randomly, and does not repeat a song? The disc changing mechanism on this is also loud enough to wake people up sleeping in an adjacent room. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first cd player for a teen!
First off this player is not slow, it searches very fast and it sounds extraordinary. I am a Technics and Vector Research man and have owned CD players since 1982. The head phone jack and the remote control cons are minor. I have never used a head phone jack, on any of my high priced players, let alone sat over a player with a remote. Once the music is playing your moving around and with a five-disc capacity you are too busy -- "busting a move baby!"
