Amazon.com Product Description

Brimming with high-tech features, Toshiba's 42H82 widescreen projection set is ready to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. Heading the great features is IDSC Pro, which coverts all 480i and 480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-top boxes) to 540p. Since 540p and 1080i share the same scan rate, the 42H82 establishes a single focus point, eliminating focus compromise. Frame, line, and pixel doubling are all used to create progressive, full-frame images from standard interlaced signals (such as composite-video signals from DVD players, VCRs, and camcorders).

Toshiba's motion-adaptive Hyper Progressive Scanning system analyzes 13,600 points onscreen to create smooth edges and eliminate "stair-stepping" artifacts. The resulting smooth, filmlike image is enjoyable even up close. IDSC Pro passes through 1080i images without alteration, and now accepts 720p images and displays them as 1080i. Multiwindow dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP) grants PIP functions without the use of a VCR as a second source. This lets you scan through all stations on nine boxes across the bottom of the screen--you can even use the boxes to scan preset channels. A stellar 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction provides more accurate processing of RF and composite-video signals for a sharper, cleaner picture. This advanced comb filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex scenes. CableClear Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, and Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from DVD players and satellite receivers).

New to this model are DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation, which improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, and HD Dynamic Contrast, which continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts with the most detailed information. Cinema Mode circuitry (3:2 pulldown switch) identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. The TouchFocus automatic digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. Manual override adjustments are available. For audio, the 42H82's SRS 3D Sound Field Expander creates a wide, three-dimensional sound field from the television's internal speaker, which enhances sound quality without adding external speakers. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio. This unit comes with an illuminated universal remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 42H82 is a wonderful set!
I bought the Toshiba 42H82 about 2 months ago. It has an outstanding picture and the sound quality is just terrific. I shopped around both in local stores, and on the internet, and researched a great deal before buying. With Toshiba's reputation for quality and a strong warranty backing-- this was the set for me. My friends have bragged on the quality of the picture and I would encourage anyone looking for a projection TV in this size range to consider this product. I LOVE MINE!

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatSet-if-2002 Model
Just purchased the Toshiba 42H82 and couldn't be happier. The picture is great, but if you buy online be sure you're aware that only the newly released 2002 models will be capable of receiving the DVI upgrade as this will be the very best technology before long.

According to Toshiba's website, "DVI is an uncompressed (base band) digital video connection. It provides a secure digital interface for connecting a Digital Set-Top Box to an HD Compatible TV. It is not made to replace IEEE1394, which can still be used to connect the Digital Set-Top Box to a Digital Recording Device. 2002 H82 Wide Screen PTV models can be upgraded to an optional jack pack that includes a DVI input with HDCP for a true uncompressed digital video connection.

This is only to prepare for the future when all major network HDTV broadcasts will supposedly require the DIV connection so they can protect their copyrights easier.

All in all we're thrilled with the stunning picture and easy to use menus-a true deal at this price level.

5-0 out of 5 stars forget the plasma or lcd
After careful and I mean a year of careful web searches on info on large widescreen t.v's in crt, plasma and lcd we took the plunge and with our hard earned dollars purchased a 42H83 the latest model offered by toshiba. I believe we made the correct choice. Sure its not 6 inches deep like plasma but 18 inches is pretty slim. The picture quality after our adjustments is as good or better than plasma or lcd. Watching standard broadcasts takes getting used to on a widescreen but no big deal. We have it hooked up to a DTS 5.1 receiver and a progressive scan DVD and watching widescreen movies is awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome TV!
The quality on this TV is out of hand! Good projection and sharp graphics on any movie you can watch! Perfect for a Home Theatre system. Price is competitive and I was impressed with what I got. I would recommend this for any home buyer putting a system together!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome TV!
I got this tv recently. I must say I am blown away. the picture quality is superb. The sound is great! I love this tv. The tv comes with a suround sound feature that envelopes you. There are times I have gone to my door because I thought someone was knocking at it. But then I realize that it was just the tv. That is hw great the sound is. The sound on this tv is better than that of most surround sound systems. The picture quality is superb as I said before. The lines are clear and crisp. I love it. I love playing my video games in high definition widescreen. nothing makes me happier. I must say I am also pleased with the number of inputs this tv has. 2 S-Video, 2 Component Video, and all the analog you would need. Least just say I love not javing to go behind this tv to hook anything up. I have a DVD, 3 video game consoles, a vcr, and my cable all hooked up at once. It is a beatiful thing! I also want to mation one last thing before I end my praise to the tv. The menus are simple and easy to figure out. There are enough settings to make any control freak happy. And they are easy for anyone to figure out. Well to say the least this tv is the perfect tv. Unless you want a bigger one that is. But 42 inches is big enough for me. I lvoe this tv and anyone who buys it will certiantly get everything they want and more! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's high-definition-ready 36HF72 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The 36-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks cool, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. A special 16:9 mode displays a 16:9 high-definition source (full 1080i) with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to maintain aspect ratio while wasting no screen lines on the bars.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), IDSC II performs frame, line, and pixel doubling to create progressive, full-frame images. Toshiba's motion-adaptive Hyper Progressive Scanning system analyzes 13,600 screen points to smooth edges and eliminate stair-stepping artifacts. The result is a smooth, filmlike image. (IDSC II passes through 1080i images without alteration.) A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Meanwhile, dynamic Quadruple Focus improves edge and corner focus, so you can enjoy legible text and graphics even at the outside of the screen.

Advanced velocity-scan modulation also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). The 10-watts-per-channel 36HF72 offers two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. SRS 3D Sound simulates surround sound from any stereo audio, while Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS) heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV. Diagnostic mode? How ?
This is one great TV I love it. The picture looks great as well especially with component cables and a progressive scan DVD player. This does in fact have bowing issues. I have contacted Toshiba about it and they simply state that it does not occur how's that for customer service? Any who I love this TV. Someone mentioned a diagnostic's mode? How can I use that feature? I want to fix the bowing issues as well because it does get very anoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great picture....
... This Toshiba 36HF72 is Great! The picture quality is astounding, and combined with my surround sound, it's just a great lookin' and soundin' system! ... I'll be plenty happy with this in my front room..... Tim

3-0 out of 5 stars Has Problems
I was initially very impressed by the image quality. However, as time went on, I first noticed the problem where the image would get distored at the bottom part of the screen. When the Toshiba approved repair technician looked at it, he replace an integrated circuit card. However, after he did that, characters are not getting displayed properly. They look fuzzy (as though you are not wearing your prescription eye glasses). The color and picture quality are excellent. The TV is very heavy and thereore I strongly urge you to buy the in-home service warranty. Trust me you will need this.

Overall, I think that I good have bought a better TV.

4-0 out of 5 stars great . . . except the bowing
... overall the TV picture is very good, although i'm limited by my sub-par DVD player, cable company, VCR etc. i have yet to try the component inputs though, should be a great picture provided i get the image to display without the bowing. wish they had more control over the picture itself. the sound leveling stuff they have is a joke though, have to adjust the volume between commercials and program. ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantasic picture with some work
This is great TV, but only after I worked to find how to adjust the picture in diagnostics mode. In that mode I was able to fix all of the picture issues (bowing, centering, ect.) If you are not careful the adjustments can damage the TV. Get proffesional help if you are worried. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great TV...when it works
I bought this TV over a similar RCA 34" widescreen more for the excellent quality history that Toshiba's are noted for (vs. RCA). However, for some reason the TV turns itself on and off at will and often times won't restart. Toshiba repair has been scheduled.

When working, the TV is excellent. Great picture with a digital Satelite signal and outstanding with progressive scan DVD. I was worried about going with a widescreen vs. the standard 4:3 aspect ratio sets. Trust me....this is the way to go. We quickly got used to the widescreen format and love it. The Toshiba does a great job at stretching the images from standard signals and not showing too much distortion. The Toshiba remote control is substandard and not universal. We purchased a Sony programmable remote to operate all our compenents...it works great.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love movies, this is a great TV for you!
I've had this TV for just over 6 months - LOVE it! We use component cables with Progressive-scan Sony DVD player and also use the component cables with Sony PS2, both versions of video is so crisp, it hurts your eyes! Also have HD cable box, and the HD picture is phenomenal (for the 5 channels available, so far...) Remainder of channels come in very clear. Was considering Sony flat-screen and Samsung 30" plasma when we purchased this. Very happy with the choice we made!

Great features with the TV, PIP, etc.... so many you will spend hours pouring through the manual. Our favorite is a "1/2 mute" where the first time you press the mute button, it mutes 1/2-way... low enough that one can answer phone briefly but the remainder of viewers can still hear. Also had multiple settings for the widescreen so you can choose which "fit" is best per movie (some widescreen DVD's are not exactly the 16:9 (or 1.78:1) aspect ratio). For example, Star Wars II is 2.35:1, so you may have black bars to view movie in proper proportion (or, if you choose to fill the screen, you stretch/smush the video to fit)... one of the things we didn't realize until we bought the TV and started trying out all the movies....

And should you choose to purchase this model, have a buddy handy for moving it in, it is HEAVY!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent widescreen TV, ready for HDTV.
If you currently have a conventional TV set with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio but watch a lot of DVDs, you're probably tired of black spaces above and below the picture wasting much of your TV's screen size whenever you watch widescreen movies -- which are becoming the norm on DVD. The cure for this problem is to get a widescreen TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This Toshiba is an excellent 16:9 TV with a very sharp picture. Furthermore, this set is HDTV ready so that when you get HDTV cable or satellite service, this TV will be ready to display the dramatically improved picture quality characteristic of the new High Definition Television broadcasts to which all networks are rapidly converting. This Toshiba's 34" screen, although quite large, may not be as huge as some of the new thinscreen plasma TVs, but it's picture quality is equal or superior to plasma TVs and its price is much lower. All things considered if you want a widescreen TV that's ready for HDTV and you don't want to break you budget to get one, this excellent Toshiba set may well be the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Wide Screen Set
I purchased this set about 6 months ago. Very pleased. My wife is getting tired of me talking about how wonderful the picture is, especially with a progressive scan DVD player (a must), even 6 months later. I bought a Toshiba DVD player too and have been very pleased with its performance. The picture with these two combined is amazing (you can even see the sweat pores on peoples faces in excruciating detail). One other thing, my daughter accidently dropped the TV remote in the toilet and it still works. I'm not quite sure what that says about the remote, but it is a great universal remote (it can control the DVD, my SONY VCR, and the TV). I have also used the V-CHIP to great success to protect my kids from channels they should not be watching (TV automatically blocks them).

4-0 out of 5 stars nice nice nice
This unit has a menu for setting up the tv and makes it easier for the average user. I found the sports setting too grainy for any use, the different settings for picture may be a variable detail gain. I found the movie mode to be the cleanest, with velocity modulation off. It comes shipped with contrast set to 100% and brightness too high for a low light room so lowering this will make quite a difference. the onboard sound is outstanding. All the a/v in-outputs are nice but I would appreciate a svhs input/output splitter on at least one channel. The picture quality (once set for the room) is nearly unbelievably good. The wide screen size settings nearly simulate hdtv using cable input with the line and pixel doubling. Highly recommend this TV. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Boasting one of the biggest home-theater screens available, widescreen or otherwise, Toshiba's 65-inch 65H83 projection television is loaded with the goods to deliver vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. It even comes with its own cabinet, which conveniently splits in two for easy installation.

The set's TruView feature combines several enhancements (black level expansion, fine white, flesh tone correction, and color detail enhancer) to automatically display accurate picture and color details. Also automated, HD Dynamic Contrast continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information.

And since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).

Meanwhile, DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The TouchFocus digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button.

Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies film-based content from DVDs and reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce a movie's original 24-frame rate. This process eliminates artifacts and gives you sharp, accurate full-frame progressive images.

Finally, the set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a 0.52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, thereby sharpening the image. With convenient direct video input selection, you can choose specific inputs right from the remote's numbered keypad--no more scrolling through all the inputs to find the one you want.

The 65H83 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a DVI HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included).

For audio, the 20-watts-per-channel 65H83 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance your home-theater sound. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact.

The supplied illuminated universal remote also controls most manufacturers' VCRs and DVD players.

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's state-of-the-art, high-definition-ready 30HF83 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. It boasts not only two high-definition component-video inputs, but also a digital video interface (DVI) for a direct digital connection with your HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver. And it's stocked to the gills with picture-enhancing technologies.

The 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Meanwhile, Dynamic Quadruple Focus improves edge and corner focus so you can enjoy legible text and graphics even at the outside of the screen.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pull-down switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The 10-watts-per-channel 30HF83 offers a little something--well, a lot of something--extra in the bass department: Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS), which heightens the impact of low-frequency audio, and a built-in, 13-watt CYCLONE subwoofer, which conserves floor space while making sure you feel it in your bones when the T-Rex stomps its way across your screen. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices).

Starting to sound complicated? Don't sweat it. Toshiba's QuickConnect guide walks you through the connection of your antenna or cable box, your initial channel scan, and other setup functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Picture & Sound and the perfect size.
I spent a month looking at widescreen HDTV's looking for what would be best for my living room. I watched this TV side by side next to bigger projection HDTV's and the Sony widescreen HDTV's and this Toshiba was clearer than the projection tv's by a mile and showed flesh tones and colors equal or better than the Sony XBR. Best of all, it fit in my current entertainment center, which formally housed a 27" TV. It is as clear as the plasma and LCD's but at half the price. It has all the latest digital connections so it will grow with the latest technology. Don't make the mistake of buying the biggest screen you can find for the same money, the projections screens only look good with a perfect direct view and if it will also be your everyday TV, watching the news and regular shows on a 40-50 inch screen can really be draining and overpowering on your eyes.
If you buy this Toshiba, you won't be dissappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good TV, good price, no reservations
I bought this TV even after looking at the negative reviews and I'm glad I did! Good picture quality and features and the sound with the subwoofer is better than any other TV built in system I've heard, although it can't compare to a good surround system.
When I took delivery, I unpacked the TV and tested it before signing the acceptance form - not a big deal. The delivery guy was quite nice and even helped me put the TV in my entertainment center. This 30" widescreen fits where a standard 27" Sony used to, as the Toshiba speakers are wisely mounted beneath the screen.
Set up is easy, the instructions clear. Don't worry about burn out on the sides - the available options to set up the screen result in a good picture and the horizontal streching on the sides for "theater 1" (which is what I use for standard format TV) is almost unnoticeable. Great picture from digital wide screen sources!!!
The other TV I was looking at was a Gateway 30" LCD. Without the optional side speakers, it would have fit my entertainment center as well. It's lighter than the Toshiba, but I don't think it's worth spending $1500 more than the Toshiba. Plus, if I'm lazy and don't use my surround system, I can just turn on the TV and listen to a reasonably good sound and look at a great picture. The Gateway without the side speakers would have forced me to use my sound system every time I turned the TV on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great TV at a great price
This is my second week with this TV, purchased for $799 - an UNBELIEVABLE deal when compared to other sites and other TVs. Haven't tested dvi but the component hd signal is outstanding - dvds are very good and hd tv signals are very clear and crisp.

The sound is very, very good for an "all-in-one" set. This unit includes a subwoofer that has its own settings, very impressive.

Decent remote although I am having a little trouble with it commanding my jvc dvd.

What a deal -

1-0 out of 5 stars Well this was an interesting online shopping experience!
I ordered a Toshiba 30HF83 on 6/29 after finding it priced on Amazon @ $799. I was quite impressed with the specifcations of the tv as well as the online reviews. Now mind you, I have ordered several things on Amazon in the past without incident, but this one seemed to take an interesting twist.

The expected delivery date (when I placed the order) was 7/15. I was ok with 2 or so week delay in getting the set as this seemed like such a good deal. Well today (7/16), I got an e-mail from Amazon stating they were cancelling my order because they cannot find a tv to send me.

Meanwhile I log onto Amazon tonight and search for the 30HF83 Toshiba and see it here for $943 and it will ship in 1 - 2 days. Intersting eh?

Well, I feel as though I was bait-switched. I have written to Amazon about the experience and I will also write to Toshiba. This was very frustrating to say the least... It would have been nice to get some communication a week or so ago, stating the risk of not finding any of these tv's, or if Amazon would have simply locked me into the original price and told me I had to wait another week or so.

Anyway, sorry for venting here... seems like it would have been a fantastic tv set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture!!! and well worth the price.
I was very reluctant to make a major purchase on line but did so because of an Amazon $100 gift certificate I had recieved. The Toshiba 30HF83 was perfect since fit my entertainment center and did not have the side speakers. The sound is very exceptional and I wonder why more sets are not made with this in mind? I had found most people with nice entertainment centers do not want to replace them. This set fit perfectly in place of the old 27" set I had. The picture is excellent connected to by Direct TV. I can't imagine what a High definition picture will be. I do want to try a HDTV tuner soon but hav not found one in the right price range. Also any sets with the HDTV tuner built in was reflected in the price.
I would do it all over again. The only problem I had was that Amazon did not pass along my contact phone number to arrange the residential delivery. As for the delivery personnel from Eagle shipping was very exceptional and did work with me once they had my phone number. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It !!
The set arrived on time but was delivered by a company that Eagle had sub-contracted. Getting it to our Family Room was a nightmare as the 2 guys(both elderly)who brought it in had NO idea what they were delivering! We helped but they damaged our walls getting it downstairs.
We LOVE the TV and it's great for DVD's (the sound quality is great). We don't have HDTV available in our area yet but can't wait because that will improve the picture quality. My husband loves the SPLIT SCREEN feature (he can watch 2 ball-games at once)! We like that feature much better than a PIP.
The size is great and easy to roll around and on top has room for DVD, VCR, Cable box, etc.
We shopped for TV's and chose this one because of it's size, price and split screen feature. The only bad thing is: Now, my husband rarely leaves the house!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great picture, Poor product support
Recieved our 57H82 Toshiba monitor on approx March 7. Great picture quality! very crisp, clear images. Very good sound quality for a television. Unfortunately the set broke after only 2 hours.

The tuner and convergence modules both went out. Two month later the television is still broken. Numerous calls to Toshiba Product Support has been of little help. Although, they are very polite on the phone, the product support personel have acutually have done very little to fix the problem. When I pressed one supervisor if six weeks (six weeks at the time of the call) to fix a big screen repair was acceptable, he stated that "The television will be fixed as per our warranty. But, our warranty does not specify how long it will take".

Currently:
*The set is still broken.

*One part is still on backorder - they can make new sets but can't get me a replacement part for mine.

*The price has dropped [$$$]since I bought it.

*20% of the warranty has now been used waiting for Toshiba to fix the problem

*I'm missing the basketball playoffs and will probably miss the Championships

Great picture quality, very good sound. But you play Russian roulette if your need product support.

5-0 out of 5 stars best quality
I did some homework before I bought this TV and I am very happy with it. The picture is super clear with directv satellite. For this price with such size, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Picture
I purchased the 57H82 about a month ago. I selected it over the Sony 57WS500 because it has a wide top that my DVD/VCR/SAT boxes can sit on, otherwise they were pretty close. We went to many stores to compare the different HD TVs. We really love the picture and are pleased with most channels. I have Dish network but no HD as yet (very expensive). Out of the box the picture wasn't quite as good as I expected; however, the picture kept improving and is very sharp now. It takes 100-300 hours for the CRTs to burn-in. Used the Avia CD and did the 9 point
convergence. Mine has the speaker hiss too (only noticeable at very low volume) but this is a warranty item and I will call Toshiba to come fix it(have to solder a capacitor on the sound card). The sound is very good and we feel no need to buy a separate sound system. Overall, I really loved the stretch mode for watching normal TV. Toshiba really does a great job with this. DVD's look great and even antenna TV is sharp (we live 25 miles from Lexington, KY). Inputs can be labeled and there are plenty of options for connecting your cables. It does not have DVI but it is upgradeable. Overall, we are very pleased and the price was very good.

Update: After owning this HDTV for 3 months, I couldn't be happier. I paid to have an ISF calibration and it was worth every penny. The grayscale, conversion, and focus was off quite a bit (very normal after being shipped) and the great picture has now turned into a beautiful picture that we just love to watch. I also added a Toshiba 3800 progressive scan DVD player from Amazon.com and it improved the DVD playback to another level. Save your money on the extended warranty and get an ISF calibration. Be sure to go to hometheaterforum.com for excellent information about HDTVs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value
I purcahsed this tv from Amazon and have had it for a few weeks now. I must say I am very pleased with it as a home theater monitor. When watching regular cable the picture leaves much to be desired though. (I realize this in not really the TV's fault.) I have a few minor quibbles with the set that I will get out of the way first: The built-in speakers sound very good for normal TV watching, but make an audible hiss as soon as you turn the volume up past zero. It stays the same though, so you don't hear it when the volume is up. Another thing that bothers me is the picture mode can't be locked to the input source. I would like to not have to switch from full to theaterwide1 when I go from a DVD to regular TV. Also the screen protector is very reflective, but a necessary evil as I have a small child and a rambunctious dog. Like I said, these are small problems. The upside is that you get a great picture that is bright and detailed with an accurate color decoder. After calibration with Avia, the colors were dead-on with none of the usual red-push. As the son of a photographer, I have always been bothered by incorrect displays, but am happy to say this one pleases me. I don't have a High-def source hooked up to it yet, but I would imagine it's just as good a performer with that input also. All in all, a great TV, though I am somewhat biased by the fact that I got a screaming good deal on one of Amazon's "unusually low price" deals. The company that shipped mine (Eagle) was fast and friendly and did a nice job unpacking and cleaning up the mess. Hope this review was helpful. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Brimming with high-tech features, Toshiba's 50H72 projection set is ready to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. Topping the great features is IDSC Pro, which coverts all 480i and 480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-top boxes) to 540p. Since 540p and 1080i share the same scan rate, the 50H72 establishes a single focus point, eliminating focus compromise. Frame, line, and pixel doubling are all used to create progressive, full-frame images from standard interlaced signals (such as composite-video signals from DVD players, VCRs, and camcorders).

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter provides more accurate processing of RF and composite-video signals for a sharper, cleaner picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The standard 4:3 aspect-ratio set offers two widescreen modes: anamorphic (which creates black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, but devotes all 1,080 scan lines to creating the image) and letterboxed (which devotes some of the scan lines to creating the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen). The letterboxed mode, while offering lower image resolution, preserves the screen against undesirable "burn-in" of the black bars.

The set's TruView feature, by combining several enhancements (black level expansion, fine white, flesh tone correction, and color detail enhancer), automatically displays more accurate picture and color details. New to this model is HD Dynamic Contrast, which continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information. For audio, the 50H72 offers SRS 3D Sound Field Expander, which creates a wide, three-dimensional sound field from the television's internal speaker. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact. This set comes with an illuminated universal remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 50h72
Very nice picture. One of the best I have seen on a big screen. Viewing angle is good, unlike some of the other projection TV's out there. The only complaint I have, and it is a very minor one, is that you have to be using HD1 or HD2 (COLORSTREAM) hooked up to a device that has component video (RGB) to use the Zoom, Letterbox, etc features. You cannot ZOOM, for example, on satellite or cable reception to get rid of those annoying black bars when they are being broadcast. In the literature it isn't all that clear, or I didn't read well enough. If I would have know that, I might have opted for the wide screen model for a few hundred dollars more. All in all it is a great TV. Perfect size for any living room. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars great buy
I was torn between a 50" Sony TV and this Toshiba until I saw them side by side in the store.. The Toshiba has a far clearer picture. I also have a Toshiba DVD player (2 years old) and the picture is perfect. The salesman in the store said that a lot of people think the Toshibas have a better picture than anyone else. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Slick looking stand for a Toshiba 32A43 TV
Product is a pretty sharp looking stand for the Toshiba 32A43 Television. The TV almost "snaps" into place on the stand and can be tethered down in the back with a supplied strap, with both these factors making it a stable stand and TV combo. I cannot (yet) discern any color difference between the stand and the TV set.

The stand itself has two internal shelves, leaving three levels for storage - be warned that our (RCA) DVD player barely fits depthwise, to the extent that we had to "punch" some extra from-fitted holes in the back panel of the stand so that the DVD's cables could fit. Other equipment (a stereo tuner) fit just fine, with plenty of room left over.

The stand comes flat-packed, so you'll have to assemble it yourself (you'll need a philips screwdriver and a hammer). Took me about 1 hour or so to do so, as it was sometimes challenging to tell exactly what the instructions were picturing. Also note that some of the interior panels we received were slightly scratched, but in the end it did not matter as the scratches ended up facing inwards and were on black panels that could not be seen in the end product. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great set - but it needs lots of space because of its size.
This set has a great feature set and a wonderful picture. What I really like about it is it's mutiple component, S-video, and analog inputs. I have connected to this set at the same time a Sat tuner, DVD recorder, combined VHS/DVD player and it all outputs to a 6.1 channel receiver.

You really need a large living room to place the unit in since it is rather large. You need to be seated a minimum of 12 feet from the screen to get a great picture. Off angel viewing is good as well. The cabinate sits on rollers so it is easy to move. It also offers automatic convergence as well as multiple picture settings for sports, movies, TV etc. Colors are crisp and the picture is sharp (minimum viewing distance required).

I got it for a great price and the only thing I need to add is a HDTV tuner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going Big? This is it$$$$$$$$
Overall a great television, takes some time to get used to the picture because the screen is so big. Becareful, because you need a big living room to put this bad boy in, cause there is a minimum distance you need to be able to watch it clearly without your eyes hurting. I first had the couch too close and my eyes started to hurt but if you pull back the distance, the pictures are great and definetly worth the $ for the big size. Perfect for DVDs. Buyers should purchase a warranty plan because all Projections will go bad no matter what!!!! The projecter will eventually lose focus after 2-3 years and pictures are distorted so must consider when purchasing "PROJECTION TVs."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV
This is an excellent High Definition TV. It gives an absolutely perfect HD picture. It has all the inputs you could want. The only thing lacking is the ability to switch audio when in PIP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only the strong survive
When taking a look at projection tv's of this size, one would expect to see some flaw in the picture. Sitting at the right distance (ten to fifteen feet) away the picture will blow your mind. I have seen this side by side with a 65' inch Mitsubishi and a 60' inch JVC. The only one that even stood up to the challeng was the Mitsubishi. But in the end it failed, in my eyes. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy cinema-quality viewing in your home with the Toshiba 34HF81 34-inch HD-ready TV. This flat-screen set has a 16:9 aspect ratio for optimal viewing of your favorite DVD movies and a bevy of audio features that will make you feel like you're at the multiplex. Thanks to its improved screen geometry and advanced tube design, the flat-screen FST Pure picture tube creates an image of unprecedented detail and color purity, with significantly less image distortion and glare than conventional screens. Other features include a three-line digital comb filter, virtual surround sound, and picture-in-picture capability. It has a built-in 181-chanel NTSC tuner, but you'll need an optional HDTV tuner for receiving high-definition broadcasts.

The 34HF81 has a 13-watt subwoofer and two 10-watt speakers that produce virtual surround sound. The StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, eliminating the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages. The SRS WOW feature combines three unique sound field enhancements: SRS 3D (for wide three-dimensional sound from two speakers), TruBass boast, and FOCUS (which raises the sound image vertically to create clearer voices).

The jack pack includes 3 composite A/V inputs (1 front, 2 rear), 1 A/V output, 3 S-video inputs (1 front, 2 rear), 2 RF inputs, and 2 component-video inputs.

Tech Talk
Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines of video that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today's analog TV), indicated by an "i" in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7...) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8...) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, "p," fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, like a computer display.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than I imagined !
I purchased this wonderful Toshiba after many months of research, including consumer reviews as published by National Consumer magazines. Price was a factor which ended up in my eliminating Sony which had previously been my number one choice. Review of repair records then proceeded to eliminate RCA and Zenith. My requirements were simple, a reasonably priced, good reliable 34" HDTV, in 16:9 format with flat screen, 3 S-video and 2 wideband component video inputs to facilitate my progressive scan DVD player, DSS system, cable etc. Hookup was relatively easy, (as I am not an electronics wizard), and with programming of the remote I now have control of all systems thru one device. Dss picture is fantastic, analog is not as definitive but than that is analog, not high definition. DVD qualty is excellent with monster cable connection. This TV is a definite buy, I am very pleased with the performance and the purchase price. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent wide screen HDTV at reasonable price.
If you currently have a conventional TV set with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio but watch a lot of DVDs, you're probably tired of black spaces above and below the picture wasting much of your TV's screen size whenever you watch the widescreen movies which have become the norm on DVD. The cure for this problem is to get a widescreen TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This Toshiba is an excellent 16:9 TV with a very sharp picture. Also important, this is an HDTV set which is ready to display the dramatically improved picture quality characteristic of the new High Definition Television broadcasts to which all networks are rapidly converting and which are now available from most cable and satellite providers. Although this Toshiba's 34" screen may not be as huge as some of the new thinscreen plasma TVs it is still quite large. Furthermore, it's picture quality is equal or superior to plasma TVs and its price is much lower. All things considered if you want a widescreen TV that's ready for HDTV and you don't want to break your budget to get one, this excellent Toshiba set may well be the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars consumer
Simply the best there is , nothing compares to this , it has everything you could expect.I've investigated and searhed for a new tv. Until I saw this it passed with flying colors, the picture , sound ,sharpness, etc.. look for yourself and compare and you judge . Thank You ! Toshiba !

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture; obsoleted by 34HF82
This is an excellent widescreen direct view CRT, with native 480p and 1080i modes. All 480i signals are upconverted to 480p, allowing you to see all the junk that interlacing hides. Therefore, some old 480i material might look worse on this TV. But you did not get this TV to play VHS tapes and watch CATV, did you? No, you got it for progressive scan material like high-end video games, DVDs, and HD (1080i) content.

This set has virtually peerless video quality, and numerous zoom modes for both anamorphic and "dumb" widescreen programming. The downside to this is that now every single flaw in DVD mastering or game graphics programming is visible to you. Ignorance really is (was) bliss. For example, in 480p, you can really tell that Gladiator had a much better DVD mastering process than The Matrix or Braveheart.

This set is completely obsoleted by Toshiba's 82 line of products, notably the 34HF82. The 34HF82 can do 720p, and has a DVI input, two things the 34HF81 set lacks. Therefore there is absolutely no reason to get this set today, but for those who still have it, it still looks incredible.

I have no comment on the sound, since I mute the TV and run audio through my stereo system only.

Caveat: I have a major screen artifact on strong red colors. They all appear very pixelated, especially on the borders. Under warranty, Toshiba will replace the digital video board.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great picture and price...some improvements needed.
After deciding that a projection TV would completely dominate our living room, it came down to this unit and comparably sized Sony. While the Sony had a better picture overall, the Toshiba won out due to price and performance.

Pros: Two component inputs plus three additional video in. The ability to use the TV's internal speakers as the center channel. (BTW, the sound is really incredible for a television with such tiny speakers.) 4 different wide-screen modes to accomodate just about any source. SteadySound eliminates those loud commercials. Picture quality is just incredible, especially if you put it next to your old set with a progressive-scan DVD. Cool favorite channel scan that shows 9 channel matrix next to main channel. Not just PIP but side-by-side pictures. Dual audio allows main picture to play on TV's speakers and PIP picture to play on outside source. (Combined with headphones and you can imagine the possibilities.) Universal remote works well with many components for most basic functions.

Cons: Not even a month old and I get the occasional wierd picture--flesh tones are vivid blue. Good thing it has a good warranty. While the front of the screen is flat, the inside has a slight curve in the corners. PIP doesn't work with component sources. Channel labels are only 4 characters long, limited to about 20 channels and don't automatically assign themselves. This unit is huge and heavy (163 lbs) which limits what you can put it in/on.

Overall a good value for such a excellent picture. To get something better would cost nearly a thousand dollars more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture and sound quality
I have had my Toshiba HDTV now for over a year and I am very pleased with its performance. I compared it with the Sony WEGA and found that I liked the picture quality better on the Toshiba. The Toshiba has a flesh tone color correction that makes people look a lot better as compared to the Sony WEGA (perhaps the Sony has this feature but the salesperson said it didn't). When I compared the HDTV picture to picture with the Sony again the color and quality of the Toshiba was as good or better. Since in my area there are only two channels that the local cable provider has in HDTV I was much more concerned about the quality of the cable shows not in HDTV and in this area the Toshiba delivers- the IDSC II upgrades standard cable signals and it looks great.

The 36hfx72 is the same exact television as the 36hf72 but has improved sound and bass response. The cost between the two sets is higher and I planned on not getting a surround system for my small room. The sound on the set by itself is quite good but I have decided to go ahead and get a surround sound system so if you already have one or plan to purchase one in the future you should probably go with the cheaper 36hf72.

Overall, a great set that I highly recommend. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's high-definition-ready 32HF72 TV is poised to render vivid, detailed images from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The 34-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks cool, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity. (IDSC II passes through 1080i images without alteration.)

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players and satellite receivers). The 10-watts-per-channel 32HF72 offers two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) for easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console. A rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. SRS 3D Sound simulates surround sound from any stereo audio, while Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS) heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Switch and bait
I can't believe such a reputable company would actually use the switch and bait system to try and boost sales. I ordered this TV at the Website price of $279, received my confirmation, then received a cancellation notice less than 24 hours later!! I truly think that by having read all the the previous reviews, Target will lose several customers. I also believe a company of this magnitude should honor any and all mistakes made on their behalf!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive...as good if not better than the Sony
Got the TV about 2-3 weeks ago, could not decide to spend the extra on HD vs. non HD. In the store the difference is obvious....Toshiba and Sony are head and shoulders better, and we cound not tell the difference between the 2. Heavy to lift, but great value. Now just need to get the HD reciever for the Direct TV.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contract Law
Under contract law, Target has no right to say the contract is null because their website generated the wrong price. For any lawyers reading this, or consumers with friends/families that deal with consumer related lawsuits, action should be taken. In addition, since there are multiple parties that have been affected by this issue it might fall under class action litigation. If there are any concerns/questions that I might be able to help answer, please write me at mykatenip@hotmail.com. I hope this helps somewhat- Hunter

2-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba - Buyer Beware
Just in case some of you missed the article on WCVB channel 5 check this out -
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/buyerbeware/2 686222/detail.html

and in case you didnt know, Target is supposed to be offering a $20 coupon off a purchase from there web site. I have not seen anything have any of you ?

1-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Disgrace!!!!!
Never have I been treated with such discourtesy and disrespect by a organization willing to take my money. Just as others have said, I ordered the Toshiba Flatscreen at the price shown online; was sent a detailed confirmation, was updated as to its delivery; and then without notification the order was cancelled by Target. The combination of false advertsing, the unwillingness to honor an agreement, lack of communication, and the dismissive minimization of a cutomer's issues, has shown me that Target Corp is a company that puts its mismanaged operations ahead of its valued customers. Without question the most negative and short-sighted abuse of a customer I have ever seen. I will go out of my way to share with friends, clients and associates, the self-serving character of this company. If no effort is made to accomodate us, as customers, the idea of a class-action suit would be well-received by me and surely worth pursuing. Contact me those of you who feel it may be. This has been a true, customer service nightmare, where the customer is screwed and then punished for the company's own unwillingness to accept its mistakes. I am livid and will remain so till this is addressed!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Brimming with high-tech features, Toshiba's 50H82 widescreen projectionset is ready to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals fromDVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cabletelevision boxes--you name it.

Heading the great features is IDSC Pro, which coverts all 480i and480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-topboxes) to 540p. Since 540p and 1080i share the same scan rate, the 50H82 establishes a single focus point, eliminating focus compromise. Frame, line, and pixel doubling are all used to create progressive, full-frame images from standard interlaced signals (such as composite-video signals from DVD players, VCRs, and camcorders).

Toshiba's motion adaptive Hyper Progressive Scanning system analyzes13,600 points on screen to create smooth edges and eliminate "stair stepping" artifacts. The result is a smooth, filmlike image that is enjoyable even up close. IDSC Pro passes through 1080i images without alteration, and now accepts 720p images and displays them as 1080i. Multiwindow dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP) grants PIP functions without the use of a VCR as a second source. This lets you scan through all stations on nine boxes across the bottom of the screen. You can even use the boxes to scan preset channels.

A stellar 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with VerticalContour Correction provides more accurate processing of RF andcomposite-video signals for a sharper, cleaner picture. This advancedcomb filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering orflicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. CableClear DigitalNoise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, and Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from DVD players or satellite receivers).

New to this model are DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation (which improves contrast and overall picture sharpness by changing the speed of the electron beam as it transitions between bright and dark areas of the picture) and HD Dynamic Contrast (which continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information). Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. The TouchFocus automatic digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. Manual override adjustments are available.

For audio, the 50H82 offers SRS 3D Sound Field Expander, which creates a wide, three-dimensional sound field from the television's internal speaker, which enhances sound quality without the addition of external speakers. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact. This unit comes with an illuminated universal remote control. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performence for the buck ..
I bought the varient of this model 50H12(some people are telling 50H12 is better than 50H82) which in my view are same at Costco for $1600 including taxes. It really rocks for the price. Picture Quality is great & Audio is excellent. I feel now why Consumer Reports rated hight for Toshiba in Projection TVs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Broken after only 2 years
The clarity of the picture is good, and I was happy with the controls. I cannot recommend the purchase of this TV. After just 2 years of normal use, it went up. No picture at all. It has been out for 6 weeks because Best Buy can't seem to find qualified people to work on this TV. Also, I overheard them talking about the poor construction of the boards. They making it very difficult to repair by glueing the parts to the board so you have to purchase an entire new board.

Best Buy also has very poor service and I will never purchase their PSP warranty package again. They are not customer oriented and are only the middle guy for the service people, which has you running in circles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent set! Highly Recommended!
I have owned my Toshiba 50H82 for approximately 6 months and have nothing but praise for the set. I have not had the luck of experiencing any HD pictures yet, but my progressive scan DVD (hooked up through component video) is remarkable! Digital cable looks great too (Analog is decent). I love the fact that this tv has wheels underneath as well as the fact that the top of the TV has about a 6-inch depth to act as a "shelf" so I can set my center-speaker for my surround on top.

Very highly recommend this set!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome HD Picture Quality
Our Initial reaction to the 50H82 was one of content. Ya it was an upgrade from our 48" Sony but we weren't necessarily amazed..

The problem was/is, 4:3 content doesn't fill a 16:9 screen, and there's a lot of 4:3 content out there! Hence, if you're watching a standard Broadcast, Cable, or Sat signal you'll need to decide how best to fill the screen. In the case of the 50H82 you can stretch it into fitting, scale/crop it to fit (loosing a bit of the top/bottom), you can keep the 3:4 aspect ratio which translates into leaving the unused sides of the screen blank, or you can use one of Toshibas hybrid schemes that only stretches the outer portions of the image leaving the center area untouched.. This is probably your best bet, albeit not a perfect one..

One area that appears to be pretty close to perfect was discovered with the addition of an HD SatDish/OTA tuner. Within a second of selecting PBS's HD Channel it became abundantly clear exactly where Toshiba had put it's R&D money.. 1080i HIDef content, coming off stations like PBS and HD-Net, looks simply STUNNING.. Words can not do justice to Nature scenes appearing as real as looking out a window and sporting events that place you in the stands. Suffice to say,, having seen what this set was capable of, we have become virtual slaves to HD. Fortunately most of our local stations (Boston Area) have already begun OTA digi broadcasts. A lot of 480p signals during the day and 1080i for the networks (mainly CBS) primetime programs.

The 50H82 has plenty of analog inputs, 3 composite/SVideo, 2 antennas, and 2 component HiDef inputs. Sadly, Toshiba failed to provide a Digital interface. ie. NO Firewire, USB, or DVI..

This is truly unfortunate and the only real negative I can think of.. Hopefully Toshiba will follow some of the other manufactures who had neglected to provide a digital interface and offer a retrofit device of some sort... ala Mitsubishi's "Promise Module" that adds a Firewire interface to a few of their upper end sets.

Other than the Firewire issue, we're completely happy with the 50H82.. , and for those looking for an HD or DVD Monitor, would highly recommend giving it a look,,

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Better for Price
Excellent picture using a progressive scan dvd player. If you adjust the picture enough you can get a fairly acceptable picture with regular cable. But to see what this tv can do you need an HDTV source. Controls very user friendly. Size is just 21 3/4 deep so you can put it about anywhere in the house. And its on rollers, it doesn't seem like a big deal but wait til you get it home. I am happy with it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Bring stunning digital picture and sound from the theater to your home with the Toshiba 53H71 53" HDTV-compatible projection television.

Video Features
In addition to being HDTV-ready--fully able to appreciate incoming digital signals--the set is equipped with IDSC (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion), which produces a high-end progressive scan picture with artificial intelligence that helps avoid artifacts and jagged lines caused by motion. IDSC also includes Advanced Video Noise Reduction, which virtually eliminates picture "snow." This set is also built with Toshiba's Powerfocus Optic System, a high-quality, four-element lens system designed to maximize both sharpness and brightness, as well as TouchFocus, for easy returns to sharp, accurate focus from corner to corner of the screen. Adding to your home theater experience, the set's Cinema Mode more accurately reproduces in DVDs the film's original 24-frame material (television signals reproduce images at a faster but often incompatible frame rate), eliminating the possibility of other errors or artifacts caused by simply doubling the signal, as with conventional televisions.

Audio Features
The set features SRS (Sound Retrieval System) Surround Sound. Touted by Toshiba as the leading 3D Sound technology worldwide, it essentially retrieves and restores to its original depth the sound data from any stereo recording, resulting in sound that is much closer to that of a live performance. The 65H81 also sports MTS Stereo with SAP (second language decoding) and SBS (Sub Bass System), which provides a noticeable boost to the unit's low frequency. Connections include: two Sets of ColorStream HD component video Inputs, two rear A/V inputs, two rear S-video inputs, two RF inputs, front panel A/V/S inputs, one center channel audio input, A/V output, and one variable audio output.

Other Features
Among other features, this set includes dual tuner picture-in-picture, so you can watch one program while monitoring another, a backlit universal remote, and two-level mute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb tv
After doing quite a bit of research, I went for Toshiba on the basis of picture quality, reputation and the number of connections. After comparing this to other HDTVs, there is no comparison in picture quality. We are very pleased with it - superb picture, great sound and it really brings DVD movies to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
Upgraded from a 27" Wega to this beauty. This set is on clearance everywhere, which makes it great value.

1. Cable image quality depends on ur signal. Your results may vary.
2. DVD / Component input image quality is simply superb. Fantastic pictures.
3. Lots of manual tweaking options.
4. Sound quality is good.
5. Relatively small cabinet.
6. Widescreen not worth the premium it commands.

Hope this help.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT
