3-0 out of 5 stars Terrible setup instructions - solid operation
If you're expert at setting up print servers, you shouldn't have any problem with this one. I had no trouble getting the first printer installed. However, the instructions do not give you the proper procedure for adding a second or third printer.

If you're using a TCP/IP connection, be sure the "printer name or I.P. address" is set to be your print server I.P. address and "queue name" is lp1 (for parallel port), lp2 (for usb port #1), or lp3 (for usb port #2). The "port name" can be whatever makes sense to you.

At one point in the online pdf manual (page 3-11), it states:
"While the print server supports DHCP, we strongly recommend you manually specify a fixed IP address to the print server."
Statements like these don't play well with me. I prefer to think of "supported" as meaning "works for the vast majority of users". Given that a fixed I.P. address is setup, then the previous paragraph can be easily satified. I don't know how setup would go using DHCP.

Anyway, after a lot of fiddling and 2 calls to tech support (neither of whom really understood what the problem was) it works as advertised.

1 star for the setup / user guide / tech support
5 stars for the function (parallel & usb ports) and operation

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the Directions ....
Based on reviews I read on this product, I made the following determination: Great product, horrible directions. With that in mind, I threw away the instrcutions, took the Print server out of the box, hooked it to my network and plugged in my printer. I then installed the software on the disk. The disk installs a print server admin. utility that I found to be simple to use. If you are have experience with TCP/IP or IPX/SPX protocols, you won't have any trouble using this product. It works great. I don't recommend throwing away your instructions, but if you don't have experience with networking, get on the phone with tech support immediately and don't waste your time. I installed it on Windows XP, 2000, & 98 OS's & it works great on all 3!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally got it working--here's how!
I gave this item 2 stars (one for the potential greatness of it) above, but I couldn't get it working. I was trying to use it with a Mac network and I couldn't get an IP address assigned to the printserver. All the methods the Tech Support and the web and the (horrible) documentation gave me didn't work. Well, I spoke with Tech Support again today and he suggested using the default IP address assigned to the printserver. It was 192.168.2.1

This worked! All I had to do was enter this IP address in my browser and it took me to the page which could configure the printserver so that its IP address would work on my network. I changed the IP address via the browser SetupWIzard option to something similar to the IP address for my ethernet (both of these were adjusted to be similar to my Airport IP address, since I was going to use this with the Airport to print wirelessly). After fussing a little more with the settings (airport has to have appletalk deselected in its prefs, for example), I am now printing happily.

I stuck with this and devoted HOURS to trying to get this to work bcs there really is nothing like it on the market. One parallel port, 2 USB ports--and for a great price! Also it is small and nice-looking.

If anyone needs more detailed info on how to set this up with MacOSX and Airport Extreme, check the Apple discussion boards under
OSX>OS 10.3 Panther>Using Technologies>Networking and the Web.

I think it was worth the effort--but ask me in a few weeks, when all of this hair-pulling struggle has faded a bit in memory.

2-0 out of 5 stars Would be great if it worked!
I bought this print server to use with my macintosh system. The box said it was compatible with OSX. Well--many hours and several calls to tech support and a visit to CompUSA's Apple Store later, the thing still doesn't work. The documentation is in a word, scanty. The instructions for Mac users presume a knowledge base which is not common in the average Mac user. I spent two hours at the CompUSA Apple store working with the Apple professional trying to get the thing to work. The setup requires typing into the Unix terminal--not something most Mac users feel comfortable with. Even the Hawking tech support guy said my unit must be broken--but another unit we opened at CompUSA didn't work either. So...I will probably return this item, although I really don't want to--there isn't anything else like it on the market. That's why I give it two stars instead of one--because apparently some people have gotten it to work, and it is a nicely priced, unique bit of hardware. Sigh.

4-0 out of 5 stars No problems - a great solution for Home Office
With trepidation I bought this print server after reading the numerous bad reviews. Call me crazy - but I was willing to take the risk because I could not find a comparable offering to fit my needs.
Like most people I have acquired a rather nice collection of printers: true laser b/w, high-end multi-function & a high-end photo printer (all of these are HP printers) I also have the need to provide access to multiple users in the household. I searched high and low and this was the only 3 printer print server I could find that mixed USB with the Parallel Port.
I consider myself technology competent - but certainly not savvy. It's true the manual is not the most intuitive - but after downloading the latest version of the drivers and firmware from the website - installation was a breeze for all 3 printers for multiple computers.
I had no problems with bi-directional communication - no problems even supporting the Multi-Function printer.
I have it attached to a 10/100 Switch (not hub) and all my systems are running XP (some home ver and some professional ver).
Can't attest for customer support - because I didn't need to call.
Just wanted to add a rare positive review for this product. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I purchased 2 of these for my sons for Christmas, they are not windows XP friendly. I emailed the Tech support with questions and they have not answered my questions after 7 days. I will be returning these.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap
I was hoping too get some great pics with this cam I could not afford $3oo dollar ones so I tried it. It is a poor cam. you need perefect light , after you take pic stay still for best pic I took mabe 80 pics some in different lighe only mabe 8 we useable. I never used the video function but Im sure it would have been crap. my be a good Web cam but u well need lots of lights 300 whatts lol. Xp o my goodness so many problems with XP. any why later.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment
Even though it says on the box "works great with Windows XP" I found out that it doesn't. It is NOT Windows XP compatible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entry-level - packed with features
The fixed 16 MB, which cannot be upgraded or swapped out, makes this camera suitable for entry-level buyers or those on a budget, but who want a digital camera with a suite of features and software.

It's the features that make this camera such a value - it can function as a webcam/video conferencing camera, a digital camcorder (although you're limited to 3 minutes and 20 seconds of relatively low-resolution 320 x 240 video with voice annotation), and a digital still camera that can take 450 shots at 640 x 480 or 2000 shots at 320 x 240 resolution. It can also serve as a voice recorder that can hold up to 30 minutes of voice only recording.

In addition to the features that are built in, the camera also comes with an up-to-date version of Microsoft NetMeeting, Ulead PhotoExpress 3.0 photo editing software, Ulead Cool 360 panoramic creation software, and Ulead Photo Explorer to manage your photos.

If you are a casual user or primarily want a webcam that can sometimes function as a still camera or camcorder you may not outgrow this device. However, if what you really want is a digital camera, but want to start with a modestly-priced starter camera you'll probably love it. It installs easily and performs to specifications - two of the most important features of any camera in any price range. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Empezó bien, pero luego dejo mucho que desear...

1-0 out of 5 stars Drivers won't install
I am trying to use this product with an IPAQ 5455 plus expansion pack, but haven't been able to get the Pocket PC drivers to install. Hawking Tech support has not been able to help. If you don't need to install drivers to use this on your set up then you may be ok, otherwise beware

4-0 out of 5 stars It Works and it's fast
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is that it could possibly be a little smaller.
That aside, this baby works great. No driver installation or other fiddling required, just plug it in. It runs 100MB in FULL duplex, so it is very fast. I use it in the lab to talk to routers and terminal servers. At home it's a fast way to load SiteScooper web clippings and to save backups.
All in all, an excellent value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great with Zaurus
I wanted a CompactFlash Ethernet card for my Sharp Zaurus (the SL-5500), and this was the cheapest one I could find. It wasn't listed on Sharp's compatibility list, but I saw someone online had mentioned that it had worked for them, so I gave it a try. Plugged it in, configured it in Network & Sync, and it worked right away. (This isn't actually surprising, of course; CompactFlash is just miniaturized PCMCIA, and Linux has great PCMCIA Ethernet support.) Makes a huge difference in installing software; I can use the "Install from Network" button in "Add/Remove Software" to download from package feeds, or use the browser to download package files that aren't available in feeds.

This is with version 2.0.37 of the Zaurus ROM, the one that came preinstalled.

Now if only I can convince my wife to let me put an Ethernet drop in the bedroom. :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Casio E-200 owners becarefull !
I do not feel good when i rate products with 1 or non star ,always try to catch the mistake at me. I tried two different CF686TXs and neither of them work with my Casio E-200. Before i purchased, i asked Hawking Tech's technical support, they said it will work. But did NOT! After mail dialogs and lots of calls they admit that they did not check it with E-200. The reason why they told me that it will work is Casio E-200 has Windows for pocket pc 2002 and Intel Strongarm CPU which some ipaqs has same(They checked with ipaqs and it's working). Casio E-200 owners becareful ; trendware te-cf100 and Socket Communications 10/100 Ethernet CF Card are also incompatible. If you ask me which one is compatible really i could not find yet. May be casio should show us a way... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Spend a little more
I have used this switch on a daily basis in excess of 6 months. It was inexpensive and worked great when I plugged it in. After about 4 months I started to have problems connecting thru the switch. At roughly the 6 month stage the switch would stop working entirely after about 10 minutes. After noticing that the case was getting warm to the touch, I pulled the card from the case and positioned it in front of an exhaust fan on my work bench. Within a few seconds it had re-established a network connection and has been working since. Obviously the chip has an overheating problem. I could not recommend this card to the average user who needed long term reliability. Spend a little more, get a switch you can rely on.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a switch . . .
You get exactly what is advertised... Since I've installed it in my network the only difference I've found is that I have more ports, which is exactly how a switch should work. This is the second thing I've purchased by Hawking Technology. I hadn't heard of them before, but am very pleased with their products and quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars An "ugly" switch, but sometimes ugly can be beautiful!
This is a "supplementary" switch I'm using to link a couple of *ancient* machines in the attic to the house network. I wanted them to be hooked up, but I didn't think they warranted the expense of a Linksys switch.

And there was Hawking, looking kind of like a poor relation next to the others. It certainly isn't as physically "attractive" as other hardware, and doesn't carry a "prestigious" brand name, but the price convinced me I had nothing to lose by giving it a try.

Setup was simple, as with most any simple network switch: unpack, plug in power, plug in network cables. Up and running in about three minutes. No problems so far, and it seems to be as good a performer as its more beautiful and famous cousins. It seems solidly constructed, and each port has its own yellow/green status LED to indicate connection speed.

So, if you're looking for an inexpensive 10/100 switch, and you can convince yourself that "beauty is only skin deep," I recommend you give the Hawking a try. ... Read more
