1-0 out of 5 stars Miserable piece of Junk
Perhaps it's expecting too much that a $140 wireless network cam work reliably. Camera barely runs for a day without web server crashing and requiring power cycling. Supporting more than one streaming network client is beyond its capabilities. Or perhaps the WiFi signal is bad - other WiFi devices I place in the same location have no problem, it's not a dead spot: my base station is 15 feet away in the room below. But the NC320W has no diagnostic capabilites in the web interface to measure WiFi signal strength or quality. In fact it has no diagnostic capabilities at all - either file upload works or it doesn't, either WAP works or it doesn't, etc; good luck figuring out what you did wrong if you're not an expert. Never was able to get the ActiveX interface to work, but I prefer Java. The Java plugin is compatible with most browsers, at least.

You also don't get a very wide angle field of view, a camera that will work well in sunlight, a camera that will work well in low light levels, or autofocus (you'll have to stand next to the cam with a laptop), but I did not expect those features for this price. I at least expected a camera that would work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Your Mother Falls - Priceless
Update: 28 March 2005: Comparing two web cameras. I originally bought the Linksys WVC54G and now have the Hawkings NC320W. Both are very good for senior monitoring purposes. I now prefer web cameras which use Java applets (NC320W) instead of ActiveX (WVC54G). There are situations and browsers that simply can't use ActiveX and thus can't display images. The quality of both web cams is suitable for senior monitoring. Expect image quality to fall off in low light. The WVC54G has a wider field of view. This can be important in situations where you'll have to buy two NC320W to see everything whereas only one WVC54G is needed. I am now using three NC320W and viewing using Firefox browser. Warning: setting up a router to handle multiple web cameras needs a near router expert. The NC320W may soon become obsoleted by the newer and cheaper HNC230G (not released as of this date). I recommend setting up the cameras using static IP addresses so power outages won't cause new addresses to be reassigned.

True Story. Everyday I check on mom to make sure she's ok. While on vacation in Australia, I tuned in at the very moment she fell off the couch in Chicago. Using Skype, I called the senior home to have someone help her get up. Although she could have slid over to the phone and called for assistance, the important thing is that I learned she falls and can't get up by herself, and she hasn't been telling us. The WVC54G works well for this application. I can even see which DVD she's watching. I had to open port 1024 to get it working so it's not plug and play. Once running, it has never gone down, very important. My only complaint is that the auto white balance isn't true. Colors and lighting are somewhat off. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to set up and use, but expect continuous fan noise
I ordered the HNAS1 and had it up and running in relatively little time, considering that this was the first network file server I have ever installed.

The HNAS1 is an attractive little gizmo, only 9" deep by 5.25" high by 2.25" wide.It comes with rubber feet that let you mount it upright (9"x2.25" footprint) or on its side (9"x5.25" footprint).

With this device, you need to buy your own IDE hard drive (less than 250GB) separately, and install it in the drive bay of the HNAS1.The HD that I bought to put inside the HNAS1 was a Seagate 160GB Ultra ATA/100.All I had to do was set the jumper to "Master" on the HD, connect the HNAS1's hd-ribbon cable and hd-power connector to the HD, affix the HD with 4 screws, close the cover, and I was ready to configure the HNAS1.

I recommend skipping the Quick Setup Wizard (the one provided on the HNAS1 CD).Just use the HNAS1's HTML interface to perform set up functions.Power up the HNAS1 and connect your pc *only* to the HNAS1 using an ethernet switch.Visit the HNAS1 with your web browser; the default IP address at power-up is '192.168.1.1'.Enter the admin username and password as shown in HNAS1 manual.Using the HTML interface, set the IP address you want, set host name, set time zone, format the HD, and setup user accounts and folders.Put together your LAN the way you would like it, then make sure you can still connect to the HNAS1.On a PC, under windows explorer, goto "Tools...", "Map Network Drive..." and follow the instructions in the dialog box to mount the HNAS1 from your PC.

The HNAS1 works great, the only problem is the cooling fan, which runs continuously. The fan noise is faint, but if you are in a quiet room with it for a long time, it may drive you crazy after a while. The fan itself only uses 0.4 watts, which translates into about 30 cents' worth of electricity per year... so it is probably not worth trying to modify the HNAS1 (for example, with an Airpax 67L100 PCB Thermostat on the fan circuit).I measured the overall power consumption of the HNAS1 to be 9 watts while idle, which means it will add about $7 per year to your electric bill.

Remember, this is a network drive, so there is no reason for it to be located near your computer (or near you).Locate the HNAS1 in a far-flung corner of your house, attach it to your LAN, and enjoy.

I would give it 5 stars, but I am subtracting a star because of the continuous fan noise. ... Read more

Hi-Gain Antenna Technology Extends Wireless Range
Hawking Technologies' HWC54D Wireless-G Cardbus PC Card Adapter features the latest in wireless technology. Standard wireless cardbus cards use low power antennas that deliver a circular signal pattern. This type of pattern recieves interference from the metal components within the laptop resulting in a drop in wireless performance and distance. The HWC54D solves this problem with its advanced directional 6 dBi Hi-Gain Antenna that delivers a strong concentrated signal in the direction of the wireless access point to establish a strong wireless link resulting in a significant increase in operating distance (Up to 200%). The Hi-Gain antenna position swivels and folds to make finding an optimal signal easy and simple. When you are not using the card, simply fold the antenna down for compact, safe, easy transport.

    Fast and Easy
The Wireless-G Cardbus Card is packed with features, including support for true plug and play (hot swappable), high level security (WPA and WEP Encryption), and low power consumption to preserve your laptop's battery life. The HWC54D uses the latest wireless standard for the fastest connection speeds (Up to 54Mbps - 802.11g). It is also backwards compatible with legacy wireless 802.11b products. Transferring data, audio and even video files wirelessly will be easy and fast. Configuration and installation is simplified to get your wireless network up and running in a matter of minutes!

1-0 out of 5 stars Usless brick!
I tried it on 4 laptops, and none of them was able to sustain the signal. It kept on dropping out! Mind you, two of the internal cards did a much better job than it.

2-0 out of 5 stars A load of junk
I bought the Hawking card because it advertised a "directional antenna" that promised a 200% gain in signal strength. I'm on the road a lot and I use various wireless hotspots to connect. With my IBM Laptop (built in card) I could connect quite easily, however for my Dell Laptop I bought this card to connect wirelessly.. and could never connect. The directional antenna is just that.. but you need to aim it at the router with pinpoint accuracy to get a signal.. any deviation side to side and the signal drops. I used Netstumbler to test this card and you could watch the signal drop off as you moved the card around. Even from 10 feet away from my wireless router, I could never connect. I took it back to the store. Junk. Don't waste your time.

1-0 out of 5 stars No difference
I did not notice any difference from the card that was already in my notebook and sent the HWC54D back. It disconnected and didn't let me move out of the kitchen. It installed easily; it just didn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
I bought this card to connect to an rvwifi service in an RV resort. The transmitter is several hundred feet way, and I am in an aluminum cage (my trailer). The service suggests an outdoor antenna, but I was able to get a consistent good to very good connection without all the hassle of adding all the extra cables etc. The standard card that I own, without the hi-gain antenna, could not hold the conection.

For the price of a high gain antenna you get a WiFi card with one included!

I am totally satisfied. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great repeater once configured
I purchased this range extender for my home network.I've got a Linksys router on one side of my house, upstairs, and I always got a low signal on the other end of my house, downstairs. The Linksys range extender did not work with my older Linksys router, and the dLink would work, but you had to do a lot of configurations to get it working.

Therefore, the fact that the new Hawking range extender could be used for every type of network was a big selling point. The box and documents say all you have to to do is configure the range extender by entering your SSID and channel from your wireless network, put the range extender within your wireless network coverage, and plug it in.The range extender will pick up your existing network and extend it within an area of coverage for the range extender.

The problem I had was configuring the range extender. You first connect a network cable between the range extender and any computer you want to use to configure the range extender.I first had a problem with keeping a network connection. Then I had a problem getting the configuration site to pop up.I worked and worked with no success. Finally I tried it using the Internet Explorer browser rather than my AOL browser. When I did that, it worked, I configured the range extender in a few minutes, and was up and running.Once you get the configuration screen, all you do, as advertised, is enter the SSID and channel for your network, and the range extender extends it.

Once I got it configured, the range extender has worked like a charm. It sits unobtrusively on one of my tables, and the wireless signal strength has always been excellent since I started using it.So I've gone from a low signal to an excellent signal.

So I'm very happy with the product; once configured, it works as advertised. The wireless card in my laptop picks up both my wireless network and the range extender network.Since the range extender network has such a stronger signal, my laptop locks onto its signal and I cruise away in the wireless world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars it works better on my SMC now
I use it on the linky bridge
the signal strength and link quality are increased by 8-10 percent point
then I found this antenna works better on single antenna device, on 2 antennae device, it may have problem

update: this antenna works very well with SMC wireless router (used as ap) now, the result is good enough to get a stable connection with MS MN-710
however, for further upgrade, I put an order to get 15dbi directional, in order to connect the forth-coming dell axim x30, since the kitchen is blind point, and the router is located at the edge of the house, a directional antenna can "fire" the signal throughout the house
for SMC 2804 users: connect the antenna at the connector near LAN jack (which is the REAL antenna jack), this helps

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked For Me
I bought this antenna to add to a Linksys 802.11B router that has an extremely limited range in my house. I like to sit with my laptop in the living room about 30 feet away (3 walls between router and computer) and the signal is so low that the connection keeps getting broken and data transfer is slow when the connection is able to keep active. This antenna increased my signal strength from approximately 0-10 percent to about a 30-40 percent level. This is strong enough to never drop the connection and to maintain the full 11 Mbps data transfer rate. Oh yeah, as another reviewer already stated, the picture is wrong. This is an antenna, not a bundle of cable.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works
First of all Amazon's picture is wrong. This is an antenna and not a bundle of coax.

Before I got this antenna I would lose the signal every 5 minutes in the basement. Now I never lose the signal in the basement. I bought it so that I'd have a reliable connection in the basement. So I'm quite happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite increase in signal
Attached to D-Link DI-624. It immediately improved my overall signal and the process took about 1 minute. I have nothing to compare it to but for less than $30.00 it was well worth investment. I am planning on buying another antenna but looking for another just to compare. Hope it works for you too. The picture is not what the antenna looks like.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work
I used this with my Linksys 802.11b wireless router and got no improvement in the range of the signal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hawking has a new setup wizard
I encountered the same address error as AMRO.I tried it on two different PCs and both had the same result.I didn't want to give up though.I emailed Hawking about the problem since I saw some posts about it.I figured someone else had probably complained already and hopefully a fix was in the works. They respondded with a new installation wizard that worked just fine.I even re-ran the original wizard after getting it set up and the error did not re-appear. My hat is off to Hawking and their response to an obvious problem. Now that I have it set up, I have been happy with the results of netstumbler's power readings.I tried all three power settings and the 200mw seems to offer the cleanest consistent signal.300mw get some higher spikes, but the signal is not as consistent. Purchase without fear now - Hawking has the fix for the problem listed above!!!If you cannot find the patch, feel free to email me at jeffpound@personallycomplete.com and I will send you a copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't even get to set it up
I love Hawking equipment and we use their equipment for a medium sized outdoor wireless network. We operate a church camp and with Hawking Tech's equipment we are able to easily transfer our internet services over a quarter-mile radius through trees, hills, and buildings. This piece of equipment, however, is a fluke. I had the same trouble with this as the person below did. I could not even set it up. I was able to finally access the setup by wirelessly connecting to the device, but when I changed it to bridge mode the screen went blank and I haven't got anything out of it since. I didn't even call Hawking. There are other devices out there that will allow me to do what I want...so I am sending this back. The signal booster with this access point works great and I will be ordering one of those, but don't get the access point/bridge. When I attached the signal booster to our outdoor omni-directional antenna it effectively increased our coverage. Good company...bad product. I would recommend Hawking Tech for wireless over other companies anyday...just not this particular device.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Buggy
I bought the HSB1-AP ( High Gain Booster Plus Access Point Kit) in hopes to improve the range and bandwidth of my LinksysWRT54G. Unfortunately, I did not even get that far.
1- The Setup CD failed after it located the device with following error:
a- Windows XP Professional:"Access violation at address 004A100E in module `GB.exe", Write
    of address 00000000"
b- Windows ME : Similar error message except the address was all 1's ( 1FF...)
c- Out of frustration I even tried on Linux but no use.
2- I was able to get a little bit further by using the web setup 192.168.1.240, but after setting up the SSID, the
devicewould not allow me to setup a WEB security settings.
3- I called technical support in an effort to find a solution and to my surprise I got the rudest useless technical support who claimed to be the supervisor, which even makes it worst.
4- I went to support web page in an attempt to see if they have any resolutions for the bugs that I have run intoI downloaded and uploaded :
    HWBA54G June 24, 2004 WPA_AP_P1_US.bin AP Mode Firmware File
    HWBA54G June 24, 2004 AP_11P52.zip AP/Repeater Mode Firmware
    HWBA54G (REV.M ONLY) Feb 23, 2005 HW229.bin
Firmware v.2.29 -- Fixes Mode Notification problem on Web Interface
    HWBA54G June 24, 2004 Bridge_11p52.zip Bridge Mode Firmware File

But that I was unable to pass the stage where I need to setup the WEB.
Therefore I have decided the I will return the HSB1-AP and stick to Linksys or Netgear products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good value, reliable operation
I'm quite happy with this KVM. It switches reliably using the front panel buttons or hot keys scrlk + scrlk + (desired port #1-8)

The only hotkey annoyance is that it won't take the port number assignment from the number pad (reliably on my wireless natural keyboard). I have to use the top row numbers. This makes hot-key switching a two-handed operation, but it's quite fast and reliable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value/ works well
5 stars because of the great value. Other 8 port switches are double the price.
I needed a cheap 8 port KVM switch and took a chance on this one. It works great; you can switch either by hitting a button on the switch or using a hotkey combo on the keyboard. Does not include cables. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is 15dbi gain...
received this antenna from amazon.com, install on same location where I used 6dbi antenna
the signal has 1 bar increase on windows
then, I check the prism settings for MN710
the percentage has 10-16 point increase over hawking 6dbi omni antenna
and now, the signal is good enough
since the antenna is located on the edge of the house, that the signal still can sweep across the whole house
    this is a good buy

5-0 out of 5 stars This thing is awesome !
I have no idea what the person writing the review above was talking about. I had exactly the opposite experience with both products. I put the HAI15SC on a D-Link DI-624 802.11 G/B wireless router and saw a huge improvement !! I'm using three Apple Powerbooks with airport cards - the D-link is a great wireless router but the signal was pretty weak in our house (lot of walls). Put the HAI15SC in and the signal strength increased significantly in the entire house. Rooms that had not signal were now able to get small signal. Highly recommended ! Friends who bought this also experienced a benefit. On the other hand I did buy the D Link DWL G800AP repeater - went through 2 of them in fact - and neither of them worked. I returned them both after weeks of trying to get them to work and some 16 calls to D Link tech support. D Link tech support finally admitted that they were not sure why they did not work - it was a new product and maybe had problems. Take a pass on the D Link repeater and try the antenna - its a lot cheaper. The D Link repeaters do NOT work - they drop signal. Trust me - I tried have set up several networks. Been through three wireless routers, three antennas (I'm big on buying, trying, returning if it does not perform.) The HAI15SC works very well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much success with indoor range
Although your mileage may vary, the Hawking directional antenna did not work very well for my situation.

I needed a way to extend the range of my wireless network inside my house. I wanted to get reception one floor below and many rooms over from the location of my wireless access point. After connecting the Hawking corner antenna to my D-Link DI-614+ access point, I hardly gained any range - although throughput may have increased a little.

I would highly recommend a repeater instead, such as the D-Link DWL-800AP+. It's a little more expensive (~$68) but you get so much more bang for your buck. A repeater is a smart little box full of electronics vs. the little bit of metal and plastic you get with the antenna. I am happily using the network downstairs in my home at high speeds with the D-Link repeater and no Hawking directional antenna. (My laptop is a 17" Apple PowerBook with built-in WiFi and it works great with D-Link) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Response to previous reviewer
This isn't really a review, but a response to the previous reviewer. While it doesn't make sense to you to need a wired LAN connection to configure a wireless device, it does to me. It's using the same approach that WAPs use. You have to configure the device before you can use it, and it's probably cheaper to implement a wired LAN (since it is, after all, a LAN device) than to incorporate either a USB or parallel interface.

Thanks for the information regarding the lack of decent documentation. I'm still considering this device, primarily because it supports 3 printers, but will be more cautious and (hopefully) prepared if I do get it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad installion docs, but works after you figure it out.
The device supports a good range of network and printing protocols: TCP/IP, Appletalk, Netware, Unix LPR, Windows print client, Internet Printing Protocol (which means you can print to a URL from your network or even the Internet). I have XP and Win 98 clients on wireless-G network with Linksys transcievers on the PC's and a Linksys wireless gateway/router. So far, I can't complain about the device, but there are a few reasons I can only give it 3 stars.

The installation booklet omits some critical information most import of which is the fact that you *MUST* have a wired TCP/IP connection to the device to configure it. If you don't have wired TCP/IP, you cannot configure or use this device. The stupidity of requiring a wired network to configure a wireless network device should be apparent. Much better it would have been to run setup through a USB or serial port. I was able to configure the device with a TCP/IP crossover cable from the one PC I have with a TCP/IP interface.

The installation booklet is essentially trash. On the included CD is a fairly large pdf document which, if you care to read through it, gives a more complete (and correct) discription of the installation and requirements. However, it still ASSUMES you have a reasonable amount of familiarity with TCP/IP networking and routing requirements. It also assumes you know a few things about wireless networking AND your particular wireless network. Some things get some explanation; some things don't. If you don't have a pretty good working knowledge of these networking things, this might not be the device for you. I would say success at correctly setting things up will demand a fairly high computer geek factor.

One thing to remember: In order to reset the device back to factory defaults (so you can start over and try again), you must press and HOLD the reset button for about 5 seconds until the power light flashes rapidly. The docs don't tell you this.

The installation docs contain no help or trouble shooting info. None. Zip. Nada. Also note that the Hawking web site is completely barren of any of this info too. A morning email to the Hawking tech support received a very brief reply of limited usefulness that afternoon.

In summary: The device is certainly a capable printer server. The docs and technical support need to be much better. I am at a loss to explain why a wired network must be present to configure a device for a wireless network. ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time/money
Very bad product. Documentation did not match installation software. Software gave errors. Hawking website doesn't show this model. Tech support wait time in excess of 45 minutes. Tried to push through the installation, and it failed. Returned product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Functional but not real friendly
I setup this product for my home use, thinking I may use it for a client too. The documentation is pretty sparse and the CD manual is not easy to read. THe documentation says that this is a multi-ptorocol device. This is actually correct but not in the traditional sense. In this case it appears that multiple protocols are REQUIRED for the server to work. In my case I desired to just use TCP/IP in a windows XP environment. The device appears to follow the Microsoft lead of requiring some type of Netbios to be present.

Not all of the admin tools work under XP, but enough work to get it functional.

Overall for the cost, it works. It could be lots better but what really can you expect from a device the size of a printer dongle. (If you know what a dongle is, you have been in the business too long, like me. For the uniformed, it is a security device typically attached to the parallel port of a PC to counter software piracy. In this case, the "dongle" is on the printer, not the PC.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally Smooth
I read the reviews here, but decided to try it out anyway, as it is the cheapest alternative I could find. Having read here and elsewhere about the need to disable WinXP's firewall, I tried to do that before I started the installation. However, I couldn't find it anywhere on my PC, so I decided to go ahead and see what happened without messing with the firewall.

I was surprised at how easily this mini server installed. It took me less than 30 minutes to install it on three WinXP machines and one Win2000. I followed the instructions exactly as they were printed in the booklet, and didn't have to do anything extra. Very smooth and very easy. I highly recommend it... at least from my experience with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Setup documentation is missing fundamentally important points (such as, be sure to disable WindowsXP firewall before installing), their Tech Support doesn't answer the phone, online FAQ is dismally short, and their Customer Service does not answer emailed questions. Other than that, the product worked, once a longer-than-necessary trial and error installation process was over.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
Good news is that I Saved my Disk Partition before loading ANY Hawking S/W because I couldnt wait to get rid of all my Hawking S/W. After spending many hours trying to get this Print Server to work I gave up... Returning this today!
You would think that Hawking would do something with their poor documentation / install after all the terrible comments about install on this product. Did they ever test this install?
Never going to buy another Hawking product! ... Read more
