5-0 out of 5 stars Grundig
I wondered if by throwing a lot of money into a radio if I couldn't get stations which I could only slightly hear with my smaller radio. I was right - this Grundig sucks those faint stations out of the air like nothing I've ever run across before. But it's a lot of money! There's space on it for three exterior antennae. I've built and attached two antennae, but the built-in whip antenna does extremely well too. Hell of a radio, but did I mention that it's a lot of money?

5-0 out of 5 stars I love DXing
Better then the reviews, blows away my Yacht Boy, designed by Drake and built by Tandy for Grundig USA. No complaints, need to spend three times as much for anything better and they aren't portable.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're Serious About Shortwave, This Is The One For You.
The Grundig Satellit 800 combines top-notch performance with ease of use, and a price that can't be beat. A superb performer on shortwave, this radio will allow you to listen to all of the major shortwave stations, and also bring in many of the smaller, lower-powered, and harder-to-hear stations. This unit has superb audio, good sensitivity, and mulitple selectivity settings. Another plus is that the radio is easy for beginners to figure out, yet has enough features (memory presets, timers, scanning functions) for fussy listeners like me. Nice big digital display and controls, too.

Though nominally a portable, it's one big, butch radio: as big as a microwave oven and absolutely eats batteries. You'll want a permanent place in your home for it, and mostly run it off A/C power.

If you live anywhere other than the eastern part of North America or Europe, you will need to put up an external antenna. It's well worth it, though; with a proper antenna this radio will bring you the world.

The FM tuner is very good; mediumwave AM performance is also better than average, although there are other models you should consider if long-distance AM is your primary interest. Airband reception is only fair; I don't know why it's a feature of this radio.

The Sat 800 did have some quality control problems in the beginning (2000) those seem to be resolved now. For this price, you will not find a better performer on shortwave.

If you spend any time at all tuning the shortwave bands, this is your radio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an external antenna
After ten years with my Realistic DX-370, I decided it was time to upgrade and chose this radio because it is supposed to be one of the best and I wanted to be able to hear some of the additional bands this receives. Initially, I was disappointed. I live in a high-rise building and I discovered that my little Realistic received the same stations this much more expensive radio receives within the apartment. Still, this radio does have inputs for large external antennas, which the smaller radio does not have. I'm hoping to be able to hook up to an antenna and receive more stations. If I can't, then this radio may well have been a waste of money. I give it four stars because it does have a good, clear speaker, the antenna connections, and a few other little "bells and whistles."

2-0 out of 5 stars Generally a disappointment
For what is supposed to be a world class receiver, I found the overall reception weak. Perhaps the problem is being located in a big city, with interference from buildings, jets, etc., but the Grundig people should really let the potential consumer know that the good reception best occurs when the user lives in a rural area. I find that when I take the radio to a remote area, the reception is excellent, but living where I do, I am frankly disappointed. The radio does have a nice design and overall "feel" but maybe is best for small town users and Europeans ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

No matter where you travel, Grundig's compact Traveller II PE world-band receiver keeps you entertained and feeling in touch. Even if you never leave home, this radio makes you feel like a globe hopper. Just spin the tuning dial of the Traveller II to bring in the news, culture, and personalities of the world.

Grundig has been a leader in multiband radio technology for decades, and this radio does well by the brand, even though it's one of the German company's most basic and inexpensive models. To start with, you get two (12- or 24-hour) digital clocks--one to log home time and the other for world zones. While moving from one time zone to another, you can adjust the latter clock with the click of a dial that's hidden under the front cover. When home, it's useful to set the world clock for the 24-hour Greenwich (England) Mean Time zone; shortwave stations use this to fix their operations and promote upcoming shows. The home clock also functions as a sleep aid (with one-hour shutoff), or as an alarm, awakening with either beeps or a radio program.

Although some people are put off by shortwave's tuning intricacies, if you can insert the batteries, flip a few switches, and twist a dial, you can be up and running in a few seconds with the Traveller II PE. For world-band novices, the slide-rule style analog tuner found on this model is actually preferable to the digital tuning mechanisms in more expensive multibands, which ask you to tap in a four- or five-digit station frequency (e.g., 4.950 or 11.650 MHz). In the shortwave world, some radio shows broadcast for just 15 to 60 minutes in a specific language (such as English), and frequency-sharing stations go on and off the air abruptly. So until you get your sea legs, it's easier to just "go fishing" across the dial, stopping when you get an audible bite and being prepared to move on at a moment's notice. It's also useful to know that shortwave programming and reception really picks up after dark, when those long-distance signals propagate best.

From our East Coast locale in the U.S., we've been tuning in the likes of Spanish flamenco music from Madrid; BBC news from England; cabaret music and a special on philosopher Jean Paul Sartre from France; Canadian news and entertainment; classical music from Germany and Austria; Cuban jazz; "Voice of America Now" news; an RAI variety show from Italy; and lifestyle reports from Japan. The Traveller II PE has picked up all of these international stations with reasonable clarity and minimal fading.

The Traveller II PE does a decent job at tuning in AM and FM channels, too, but be warned: the signal reach with these bands won't be any better than you'd get with a conventional portable, and the FM plays in mono only, not stereo.

The small speaker puts out a limited-frequency sound, typical of pocket-sized transistor radios. Fortunately, the headphone jack delivers better quality sound when the earbuds are used.

Overall, we found our world-radio expedition with the Traveller II to be quite satisfying--and there's no passport required.

Pros:

  • Good reception of many world stations
  • Small size makes it a pleasure to pack
  • Attractive silver styling
  • Doubles as an alarm clock

Cons:

  • Lo-fi listening through the speaker
  • Monaural FM

5-0 out of 5 stars Good thing/small package
It is amazing what Grundig has managed to put in this little radio. The receiver pulls in an amazing amount of stations, especially in the evening. The size makes it very handy to pack in a suitcase or to just carry out onto the deck. The digital clock also has a digital display that helps you tune in a station at its strongest point. The little speaker works fine and the ear buds are very comfortable a provide a high quality sound. For [the money], this is an excellent deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Portable World Band Radio
This little radio comes with a nice case, "earbud" style earphones, batteries and a clear, concise manual.

Performance-wise, the radio does wonderfully. It successfully picks up all of the strong shortwave stations (i.e., BBC World Service, Radio Canada International, Swiss Radio International) and many of the weaker ones. When an antenna wire was added, performance improved as one would expect.

The clock and alarm features are an added bonus. I personally didn't think I would use them, however, they are remarkably useful. The wake-up alarm ("Human Wake System", as named in the documentation,) works very well. In addition, having a world clock comes in handy when listening to world band radio. I leave mine set to G.M.T. (UTC) so that both my local time and UTC time is displayed -- very useful for world band listening.

I would recommend this radio to anyone who needs a portable world band radio for casual listening. For more serious listening, like "DXing", you may want to look at Grundig's other products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and Dependale Radio
This radio is jst plain dependable and good. Almost all stations come in clear. You can get a lot of shortwave stations from it. I can get BBC every night and for [that price] it's a wonderful deal for traveling and just regular listening. I recommend this radio to many people because it's light and is great for beginners like me.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor quality, did not last
Poor sound and poor reception on all bands. Although it was taken care of, it died after 10 months of very light use. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grundig Traveller II PE - Great Product
I received my radio two days ago and have been very pleased with its performance and features. What sets this radio apart from most is the integrated clock: wakeup and sleep functions. The reception is excellent. Comes with a nice protective carry case. I also like the size/weight. Although the sound quality from the speaker is not high-fidelity, it isn't bad either; and, when used with the headphones (which are included with the radio) the sound is very good indeed. I also plug in my computer speaker system at home with good effect. I live in an area with lots of power cuts and a battery-powered radio alarm is just what I was looking for! ... Read more

The Grundig Executive Traveller, a pleasingly small, efficient device, is an alarm clock and shortwave radio that delivers the world's stations with amazing clarity. Short-wave enthusiasts will love the compact size and power, and others will enjoy fiddling with the left-hand dial as static gives way to a panoply of languages and music. The tiny, four-inch-tall radio comes enclosed in a soft leather protective wrap that includes slots for business and credit cards. The radio can be detached from its case to slip in a pocket or backpack, and users can listen through earphones (the sporty kind that are the size of a dime) or through the radio's own built-in speaker. While many items bill themselves as being designed for travelers, Grundig's handheld shortwave is truly useful, allowing instant access to the music and news of the world.Requires two AA batteries for operation. 2-0 out of 5 stars Cool design, mediocre performance
The Grundig G4B is a good example of flash over substance. The radio is nicely designed, comes with a sharp leather case- when you whip this baby out, everyone will be impressed with your cosmopoliatan Euro-cool. Less impressive is the performance of this radio. Tinny audio, only fair fidelity on FM, and shortwave performance is pretty dismal. Sensitivity to weak signals is mediocre, selectivity (ability to separate closely-spaced stations) is poor, and the shortwave bands are full of noise from the internal synthesiser. If you really want to hear what shortwave has to offer, spend a little more and get a Grundig YB-400 or Sangean ATS 909. ... Read more

Lighter in weight than many men’s shavers, this model makes an excellent choice for travel, especially since it can be operated on any voltage worldwide (an adapter plug may be required). Because it’s a corded model, the shaver plugs in with the detachable five-foot coil stretch cord and never needs charging. Designed for a close shave, the three-cut system features a foil-cutter-foil arrangement, with a three-position pop-up trimmer for sideburns, jaw line, and any longer hairs that need attention. While not ergonomically shaped, the shaver is streamlined and tapered, with grooves and ridges for a good grip. A two-sided cleaning brush, plastic head guard, shave stick for use before and after shaving, and a zippered, padded travel pouch are included.
