5-0 out of 5 stars Itty bitty shortwave works well.
The Grundig Mini has to be about as small and cheap as worldband radio gets, so I didn't expect much. The little radio delivers pretty well, though. Reception on all bands is better than I would have expected from such a small analog portable. I would put it roughly on par with the Sangean SG 622 (about the same price here on Amazon), yet the Grundig is small and light enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

Sound from the radio's internal speaker is plenty loud, but thin. Given that the speaker is little more than an inch across, that's understandable. It's fine for news and spoken word though, and the included earphones improve things greatly. Use them on any band, and the sound is better, and on FM you can listen in stereo.

The Mini 100's small size is its greatest attribute, and also behind its only real drawback. The tuning dial and controls are TINY. My middle-aged eyes require that I go for the reading glasses to see the dial markings, and your thumbs best not be very big in order to use the thumbwheel volume and tuning controls.

The radio is simple to operate, so the instructions are equally simple to understand. Grundig has also thoughtfully included a brief pamphlet that contains information on shortwave fundamentals and a directory of some of the major shortwave stations. (Voice of America, BBC, Radio Havana, et.al.) A belt clip, and even the batteries, are included.

For the casual shortwave listener, or as a travelling companion, the Mini 100 PE is a good choice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Grundig mini radio
This radio is very small less than a size of a pack of cigarettes. This is my first Grundig radio I have purchased. Even if the performance was not great I thought it might be fun to own as a novelty item. The leather carry case is a nice touch as are the ear buds and shortwave manual. The speaker is so tiny about an inch or so. The speaker does not produce enough volume unless the radio is close to your ears, even then the fidelity is not very good at all. The best aspect of the radio is the FM reception while using the ear buds. The stereo effect makes for fun listening to music stations. The AM reception on my radio is poor. I live in the countryside and can only really hear one station clearly. My other radios pick up loads of AM stations at my location. It's very strange I took the battery cover off and placed my hands on the batteries and the volume goes up on the AM stations. The shortwave reception was better however and this radio is touted as mainly a shortwave radio. The reception on shortwave is passing but not as good as my Sangean SG 622. Compared to the Sangean SG 622 the volume is lower and there is more signal fade on the weaker stations. One review in here stated the reception was close to a Sangean SG 622 which is not true at all. The Sangean SG 622 has superior reception compared to this radio, however the Sangean SG 622 is also about 3 times the size of this radio! This radio is a fun novelty item because of it's mini size but do not expect much from it performance wise.

4-0 out of 5 stars For what it does...it's a winner...
I won't delve into all the technical specs listed in other reviews. I was looking for something small to listen to AM & FM and a little shortwave, and I figured you can't go wrong with a brand leader like Grundig. And I was pleasantly surprised by its performance...but if you're looking for a radio which pulls in stations that a $100+ SW radio does, this probably won't do the trick. So let's look at the radio:<br /> <br /> The internal speaker has decent fidelity and good volume, but little bottom end (understandable considering its size)...the included earbuds are slightly below average (scooped midrange), so be prepared to pick up a decent set of earbuds (I use a $10 Sony 16Hz-22kHz set) to improve your sound tremendously. FM reception is very good, with great stereo separation not found on radios this small and inexpensive. AM reception is also very good, and SW will pull in the major strong stations (VOA, BBC, etc.) adequately. A couple of unusual things to point out, to be fair...the tuning for all bands is right-to-left, requiring a little getting used to...and the headphone-in jack is peculiarly placed on the right side a little past halfway down...strange.<br /> <br /> But those a just minor niggles...for the performance it delivers, it's quite a bargain for a radio this small. I'd give it five stars except for the earbuds and the headphone jack. But I'd still recommend this to anyone looking to get their feet wet in the world of SW radio, with very good AM/FM performance for a low price...and a vinyl pouch and brief listening guide are also included...nice touches.<br /> <br /> Pros: great FM sound, easy to use, decent SW reception.<br /> Cons: marginal included earbuds, headphone jack poorly placed.

3-0 out of 5 stars don't move while listening
This is a neat product idea, it has AM/FM and shortwave. Unfortunately it also had a major problem. If you move while listening to the radio you will lose reception. This is especially true on AM and Shortwave. I try to use this radio while mowing the lawn and walking the dog, and I have to keep my fingers on the tuner at all times, constantly adjusting it. I would recommend buying a different radio with a digital tuner (thats what I am shopping for now).

1-0 out of 5 stars low grade quality
I supposed location is everything. Up here in Alaska, I found this radio to be rather limiting if not almost useless. Reception proves to be very weak, tuning isn't the most exact science here and quality of this radio wasn't very high. I brought this radio from REI and within a year, the speaker cover fell off (they were just glued in) and my tuner dial fell apart. Needless to say, this wasn't Grundig's finest effort.

I did get good AM/PM reception within the city limits but I can do that with almost any radio. SW modes were limited, even on a clear nights, on top of a mountain. Its a weak radio, probably good in a very civilized part of the world but worthless out where you really need it. Small size is nice but why carry a radio around if you can't pick up anything once the city lights are no longer in sight?? ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Grundig 960 Classic 50th Anniversary model blends a functional AM/FM shortwave radio with the quality design of Grundig's 1950s-era box radio. Replicating the original wood construction with brass accents, the 960 provides rich, warm sound through its three-speaker cabinet. Also included is a very contemporary external audio input, which supplies the option of connecting a TV, CD player, or VCR.

This solid retro unit has an attractive cloth-covered speaker and sturdy manual volume and tuning knobs. Tuning initially requires developing something of a feel; we found that it was easy to spin past our preferred frequency at first. But with a little practice, we began to feel quite expert, and we were soon tuning in very clear FM, medium-wave, and shortwave signals, both foreign and domestic. Since there are only a few controls, setup is easy, allowing plenty of time to sit back and listen.

Two 3-inch side speakers and one 4-inch front speaker with 3-watt power output produce a clean, crisp sound. Grundig's instruction book is designed to look like the original, but its text is thoroughly contemporary. As an attractive conversation piece or an opportunity to discover shortwave radio, the Grundig 960 Classic is a real turn-on. The unit comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor. --David Greenberger

Pros:

  • Great radio reception
  • Classic styling
  • Auxiliary input for CD, TV, and VCR
  • Shortwave fun for the neophyte
Cons:
  • Constructed of wood-based particle, not solid wood
  • Precise tuning takes some practice

4-0 out of 5 stars A great homage to a classic radio of the fifties
If you're looking for an exact replica of a fifty-year-old radio, or if you want the latest in shortwave technology, this is not the radio for you. However, if you want to add a cool retro touch to your home or office, and you also want a radio with modern electronics and decent sound, this could fill the bill. Although it is constructed from modern materials, it is well-made and doesn't look cheap, at least to me. I don't use it for shortwave, but it does a great job of pulling in AM and FM stations in my steel-frame office building. It's a great conversation piece that everyone notices. It met my expecations and I'm glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Things to reflect upon about this product.......
I think there are TWO things to keep in mind when purchasing one of these:

1.) There are two versions of this radio, one that was "the 960 classic". Identified by it's extremely dark finish and a horizontal list of small boxes with counries listed in them just below the FM scale. Another couple of ways to tell edition one from the second edition is the side speaker grills on version one is divided in four sections (on the Second edition has only three sections). The function keys (FM,AM,SW...) on the Second editions are much taller then on the first.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT??? The second edition has much better attention (and quality control) on the tuning section. Over all it's better performing product.

With that said that brings me to my second point (I take it you're really interested if you've read this far!!!)

2.) I own both editions of the "Classic 960" and enjoy both. I think (by reading the other reviews) some folks expect a bit much from this radio IT IS NOT A WATKINS JOHNSON 8718 SHORTWAVE RECEIVER!!! NOR IS IT A McIntosh STEREO SYSTEM!!!

Again with that said it is solid on AM/FM and Shortwave if setup properly (A.K.A. like ALL radios it needs a GOOD antenna).

My point in closing is this; this radio can be had for less then $150.00 for the money it looks, sounds and performs very respectable. If you expect more than that you will not be happy. However if you keep your expectations realistic you will enjoy this fine little radio.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice radio depending on how you use it
Hello everyone its Vince the radio man. I have been a buff and collector for many years and I love to do compares . Its was very interesting to see the great variation of ratings on this radio from you folks out there . As I read them I understood and related to all of them . Depending how you use this radio it good be a 1 or a 5 . It is an authentic looking "retro" radio that is pretty well made . The wood cabinet and the gold paint trim are done very nicely . The sound quality is typical of what a '50s radio sounded like ...not great bass nor high highs but a punchy mid-range . This radio does have some very good features and I have gotten unbelievable performance out of mine. First off ( and this will sound a little silly) it has a ground screw . Very valuable if you know how to properly ground a radio. This will greatly increase your reception on AM and SW . I have DXed Europe and Asia on AM!!! on this radio with a Terk AM advantage antenna and a nice ground . You must also connect an RCA cable to the Aux. inputs and complete the ground by connecting the cable to a receiver or tape deck that is plugged into the AC .True its analog , but you can get ( sometimes better) performance from and analog tuner that isn't weighed down with those overly clean filters that the digital radios have . It also has an aux. in to use the system from another source , nice . Yes , mostly its a show piece, but if used correctly and if you buy the newer model that has the built in fine tuning ...you'll be very surprised as to what this thing can do . Buy it if you are a collector or want something unique .

5-0 out of 5 stars great product!
The radio is fine. When you tried it out in the store i'm sure you found that it isnt a home theater system. Yes, it's not the best speaker or newest features, but what kind of putz would have bought it if the didn't know this in the 1st place. (RE, utter junk person.) I find that is great to put on while having a nice meal with the family. i win! king me!

1-0 out of 5 stars An expensive disaster
Anybody who buys this utter piece of junk either has too much money or should have his head examined. Basically, you'll be acquiring some fake looking cabinet, a cheesy cloth grill, and a tuner whose quality is distinctly less than a $5.00 cheap-o from Dollar General. If you think you're going to enjoy shortwave broadcasts, think again. Both bands come up with barely audible static. Even the FM reception is tinny and static-ky, and drifts off station like the FM radios back in the 1960's.

Apparently a lot of people are VERY UNHAPPY with this engineering mess because the company will come up with any excuse to keep from honoring their warranty. Believe me, I can't think of one positive thing to say about this piece of crap ... Read more

Reviews (1)

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs design work
With a name like Grundig behind this AM/FM atomic clock radio, I was expecting more than I got. I normally give more favorable reviews of products on Amazon than other reviewers - maybe I'm just more easily satisfied than the usual person - but in this case I have to give this product 2 stars.

In its favor, I will say that it automatically detected which time zone it was in and set the correct time within a minute of me connecting it to power. It has a weekend sleep mode, so the alarm is automatically de-activated for weekends, which is more than I can say for other atomic clock radios. And I find the Nature sounds sound fairly realistic - nothing to write home about but certainly not synthesized in someone's garage.

My principle complaints revolve around the Eton's poor radio reception (both atomic and AM/FM), a bad power connection, and a very badly-written user manual.

Some stores advertise this unit as having digital tuning. WRONG! It's manual, and the radio reception is EXTREMELY sensitive to other sources of electricity and nearby objects. It has no external FM antenna, and unless you listen only to the strongest FM stations, the radio reception suffers terribly if the Eton is anywhere near any electrical device, such as a lamp or the control for an electric blanket. I had to place it on a dresser several feet from my bed. This unit is nearly 8 inches tall, but it has such a small base (only about 2-1/2 inches deep by 5 inches wide) that any movement of the dresser -- such as pulling out a drawer -- is enough to nearly topple it over. And your physical proximity to the radio also affects its reception, which is a real pain when you're trying to manually tune in a weaker station.

The sound quality is OK, but the blue LCD backlighting puts out light equivalent to a TV screen; my entire bedroom is bathed in blue light, and my girlfriend and I look like actors in a cheap teenage horror movie.

The Eton works off a DC plug on the back (not an internally-wired AC adapter), but the plug just b-a-r-e-l-y makes connection with the power jack; it's VERY easy to lose power, even though the power plug is still connected. Simply moving the unit a few inches or rotating it a few degrees is enough to disconnect the power.

The user manual is half the size of my palm and is not clearly written at all.It doesn't explain at all how all the various controls interact. It must have three separate sections on how to turn off the alarm. But nowhere does it make clear if that's turning off the alarm permanently or simply turning it off for that day only. I was trying to set the alarm for a 5-day-a-week schedule rather than 7-day-a-week, but what the manual tells you to do doesn't work, and nowhere does it tell you where to look - or what to look for - on the display to determine which schedule the alarm is set for. I finally saw a tiny "1--5" notation that was hardly bigger than a flea in the extreme upper right corner of the LCD screen that told me. But I have no idea how I made it happen. The user manual says it shuts off automatically after 2 minutes or after 60 minutes, depending on which set of instructions you care to try. The manual calls both sections 'turning off the alarm'.But in my experience the radio NEVER shuts off automatically. I've come home from work 9 hours later with the radio still playing. Two months after buying it and I'm still trying to figure out how to get the damn thing to shut off automatically. The instructions are useless. Sheesh!

I wouldn't give this to anyone unless I wanted to make a new enemy. An accurate, and much better-written, user manual would help.
