Going on a road trip? Tired of changing CDs after a dozen songs or so?Genica's GN803 Tavarua portable MP3-CD player lets you convert your CD audiofiles to MP3 format and store up to 170 MP3-formatted songs on a single CD.

The Tavarua plays MP3 files and CD audio files from CD and CD-R media. It doesnot read CD-RW discs, as its design requires sampling at 44.1 KHz, the standardrate for CDs.

The GN803 supports ISO 9660 file formatted directories and also accommodateslong file names. Bit rates between 32 and 196 Kbps are also supported, butvariable bit rates are not. Be aware that this player lacks a built-in flashmemory, meaning you need to transfer your MP3 files to CDs before playingthem.

Playback modes are limited. They include random/shuffle and repeat play, whilethe LCD displays only track number and elapsed time. The 50-second antiskipbuffer is great for portable use, virtually eliminating irritating skips.

The GN803's dynamic bass boost pumps up the bass and balances tone, offering afairly full audio experience. It also comes with a rapid track advance thatspeeds through the directory to access the track you want.

Headphone, microphone, and AC adapter inputs are included. The GN803 comes withan AC adapter and can run on two AA alkaline or ni-cad batteries (not supplied).A set of earphones is also supplied.

Addendum to Previous Review
I bought one of these a while ago, before their were many alternatives. I am sure there are probably much better products out there for similar prices. Some of the previous review I would disagree with. First, my chief complants are: 1. Very cheaply made 2. Atrocious button layout 3. Inability to include longer file names 4. Inability to burn CDs with over a 192k bitrate. I am not quite sure of the exact configuration that the previous reviewer was using, but I know for a fact that you can burn CDs at least up to 4x (or at least I have and have never run into a problem).

Bottom line: It works well and has good sound quality (compared to my portable mp3 player). I would think there is better on the market by now.....but if the complaints we voiced don't bother you, it's a good product. Oh, by the way, you can record stuff with a mic and using CD-RW media (although this feature is completely useless to me).

First MP3 CD player could have been MUCH better
I commend this player for being the first, but everything else about it isn't very good. It skips a lot, if you want to find a song at the end of the CD (alphabetical?), you have to skip through all the tracks one... at... a... time. Can't skip folders ect. Mine still works amazingly, but only because I just use it at home and never move it or even use it much. I've left non-rechargable batteries in the box while it's plugged in... BIG mistake! the stupid thing tried to recharge them and leaked battery acid (i think) all over the place. Get a different player, there's much better ones now.

it's terrible
I own one, and it has been the worst investment I have done in all my life. It takes too long to read the music files, after some use it heats up and will not work. Some cds are readable and others aren't. The cover painting is not very reliable. As a conclusion, it is a very low quality product.

Piece "o" ...
I bought this ... and it never played a song without skipping. after about 3 days it simply stopped working. I would recommend the Philips player.

you have to respect this player. If you have any brain you would know that this technology is amazing and is the future of music. If you don't know much about mp3 and this kind of technology, stay away, but if you do, then check this baby out. It takes a little while to get the hang of it but its worth it. ... Read more
