2-0 out of 5 stars Good idea poorly executed
Sears sells this phone as a Craftsman model for $80. Circuit City for $50. I bought two (one for me, one for dad) and discovered, to my horror, that the base station is a GIANT wall-wart (no power cord) that takes up all of a duplex outlet. The wall-wart is as big as the base of the phone. REALLY stupid, idiotic design. Also, the one I bought was defective in that it would not ring. Worked to call out, but no indication of incoming calls. Took it back. My dad's example works.

Handset is also large and not comfortable to hold - sharp edges. It's supposed to have a load ringer, but judging from the test settings I tried, it's not very load at all at its loadest.

I'd buy it at a close-out price of under $40, but not for a cent more. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy cinema-quality video and sound at home with GE's GE1101P DVD player. The GE1101P features high-resolution video performance with multiple aspect ratios that can be switched between 4:3 and 16:9 (widescreen) at the touch of a button. And since it's both standard CD and MP3-CD compatible, you can use it to enjoy your favorite regular-format compact discs as well as MP3-encoded discs, CD-Rs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, and DVD-Video movies.

The audio features on the GE1101P include Dolby Digital and DTS Bit Stream Output (through both coaxial and optical jacks) for full 5.1-channel surround sound capability. Upping the ante for fun, the GE1101P offers a microphone input for karaoke capability--just put on a karaoke CD, plug in your microphone (not included), and enjoy the music mixed with your singing right from your home speakers. You can even add reverberation to help cover for unsavory vocal quality!

GE has also built in a host of convenient features to take full advantage of DVD technology. A screen saver kicks in when a disc is paused for any length of time (preventing a still image from burning into your TV screen), while parental control keeps young eyes from viewing discs of your choice, and picture zoom lets you magnify scenes or stills of particular interest. A jog-shuttle dial control provides automatic track selection for CDs, and a full complement of other operational controls are included on the front panel.

The connectivity options on the GE1101P DVD player include standard composite-video and high-quality S-video outputs (for use with compatible TVs and/or surround receivers).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Budget DVD Player.
In my opinion, this is the *best* of the low-budget Chinese Made DVD Players, offering excellent picture and sound for DVD's. Also plays mp3's flawlessly (although no shuffle feature) and even has the bonus of full karaoke features! Finally it has coaxial AND optical output (rare on a low price DVD Player). You can't go wrong with this DVD Player. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK when it works
I bought this DVD player hoping for a decent, reliable machine that could play DVD's and MP3's. The remote is layed out very poorly, and the on-screen user interface to play MP3's is severly lacking. It had trouble playing MP3's on the last 70 tracks (of 144 tracks) of my MP3 CD's, and the device only uses 6-8 characters to display a title. My pet peave is that the power button is manual only, so I can't turn it on or off with the remote. But otherwise the DVD player seemed to work fine. The picture and sound were decent. HOWEVER, after about 1.5 months of use, it simply stopped working for no apparant reason...What a hassle.

If you're a gambler, don't care about how it plays MP3's, and want a decent priced DVD player, then go for it. Otherwise, I would recommend some other DVD players out there that are more reliable...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player for an Even Better Price!!!
I bought this DVD player after shopping online (...). It is by far the best value. It has been great, no problems what so ever. It was extremely easy to set up, all the cords were color coded so all you have to do it match the colors and plug it in, and you were then able to watch DVDs. The picture and sound are excellent and the zoom feature is even better. The only reserve I have is with the remote control, the remote could have been better designed, and more user friendly, it would also be nice if it were a universal remote. Other than that I absolutely love it. The other DVD players that are in it's price range didn't compare with all the features this one has. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an excellent DVD player for a low price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy
Have this machine. Much to my disappointment it was not able to handle the Dual Layer DVD. Just told me it could not find the disc. Tried with two different DVD's.

5-0 out of 5 stars plays mpg files

so you can brows the file and play it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
..., mine is an excellent answerin machine, the voice comes clear, and it is pretty easy to work with.
i didn't have any high expectation when i bought it, just needed a cheap machine to answer calls when i wasn't home, and this systm did the trick, i bought it last year in november, five months ago, and its working fine. i don't have any problems with it, i haven't even changed the battries yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be worse!
The title says it all. Wanted to pick '0 star' from the dropdown list, but it's not available, so I had to pick '1 star'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!
I'm very disappointed with this machine, it is a total piece of crap. Messages are so garbled I need to play them back 4-5 times and still can't understand them. The volume also wavers during playback. Most of my messages are cut off after a few seconds. Now it doesn't take messages at all. I gave it one star but it deserves much less than that. I would give it a negative 10 stars.
In summary, DO NOT BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not work (correctly) with DSL
With the DSL filter you can hear someone leaving a message but it doesn't actually register and record the message. Without the DSL filter it records the message but it's so garbled with interference that you can't understand it. I'll give it 3 stars despite these issues, because set up was easy and it works without DSL (as well as can be expected for a CHEAP product).

If you have DSL only buy this: 1-to screen calls when you're home (with filter on), 2-to set an outgoing only message, 3-for any sort of target practice, or 4-to dissect for a science project...

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
It's a waste of money! I bought one for a family member. I couldn't even understand the messages. Save your money and buy some other brand. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Was OK for a while
While initially happy with this product, after about 18 months, the illuminated display became dim, making it very hard to see at night (which was the point of buying this). The LCD worked OK. Warranty is only for a year, so I'm out of luck. When I find something else with similar capabilities, I'll be buying that and putting this in my growing collection of old phones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a reliable alarm clock
I agree with the other reviewer who said the time "gets stuck". In one night, the clock became 45 mintues slow, causing me to wake up too late to catch my train. The time was accurate when I went to bed 7 hours earlier. While it is stuck, I noticed the colon in the time display blinks extremely slowly, and none of the buttons would respond. That is, I could not set an alarm, view the calls on the ID, or fix the time. I had to unplug it and quickly plug it back in to get it "unstuck". This has happened to me on several occasions while I've owned this phone this past year, but never has it caused me to be this late before. I'm going to write to GE to see if I can get some compensation.

I also agree about the flashing caller ID light. It is very bright. I saw the reflection of it on my ceiling, and I kept trying to close my blinds. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from! It was so annoying!

As a phone with caller ID, it works just as it should. Just don't count on this to wake you up or display accurate time.

2-0 out of 5 stars could be better
I've had this phone/clock for about a year. While I like the compact design, the actual performance left something to be desired. The clock sometimes "gets stuck" after the alarm goes off and then the clock time is off by several minutes. I had to double check the time every night before I went to bed to make sure the time was correct. The display is too bright for a night stand, even on the low light setting. The caller id indicator flashes if you don't review the new calls. It is very annoying to have a light flashing when you are tryijng to go to sleep. I had to put tape over it... Last but not least, the alarm sound was not pleasant to wake up to. I bought a new cd/clock radio that I am very happy with and I am going to get simple phone with no flahing lights. I would not recommend this product if you like to sleep in a dark room.

2-0 out of 5 stars GE Model 29292
There's really only one problem with this phone but it is a big one. When you set the alarm time it is very easy to mess up the current time. Every other time I set up a new alarm time the current time messes up and the alarm ends up going off an hour early or an hour later than I expect it to (this occurs despite the fact that I am aware of the problem and very careful when I set the times). The phone does have 2 alarms and if you are going to set the alarms once and then never adjust them it would be a fine phone. For me, this is not the case and I am in the proceess of finding a replacement for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This phone has it all.
I purchased this telephone because I wanted a caller id phone with a backlit display. This phone has this option and much more. The clock/caller id display is large. One has the option of turning the backlit display (the actual lighting up) on or off. The contrast can be easily adjusted. It's not a difficult phone to set up. The caller id displays the name above the time and the phone number below the time. The date the caller called is diplayed to the right of the time. There is a flashing light for new calls. If you want to call someone on your caller id list you bring up the number from the review option and press the "dial" button.

The time display is easy to read and the current date displays always to the right of the time. It has the dual alarm feature.

The handset has an adjustable volume control. The ringer also has high/low/off options.

The alarm has a music or buzzer option. The music option is very amusing. Neither option is irritating.

I would recommend this phone to not only those who want an alarm clock/phone but also to those who want a nice caller id phone (the clock is a nice extra)! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good phone
The battery life seemed to be pretty good. You could hear it ring pretty clearly. The answering machine speaker is not very clear. When using the handset we would always hear a clicking noise. When we would call people they say they hear an echo. We are going to buy a new phone and you can be asured it will NOT be a GE phone,

4-0 out of 5 stars Great phone ...with a few quirks.
I have had this phone for 1 year now.It works exremely well most of the time. The clarity is good particularly with the answering machine. Clearest and most natural I've ever had.
I have found the range outstanding!! I have walked several hundred yards away from the base with a slight diminishing of volume before it shuts off.
The quirks... I feel that the change channel button is strictly for looks. When I do get interference (about once a month... and it is very bad when this happens.. I get the lady from upstairs' phone cutting in and I hear very clearly her conversation. We do not have the same brand of phone...) The only thing that works is putting the phone back on the base to re-set it's self.
Also at times the handset volume seems to diminish somewhat. AND the answering machine volume seems to reset it self to low magically at times and I have to change it to higher. All that said... Great phone great price..don't want these annoyances? spend another 50 bucks. But who is to say that the extra price will wield a less quirky phone?
Bottom line. It works EXTREMELY well... usually.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hope I don't have to dial 911
The problem I've had with this phone, is that the number pad quits working on one side.I know of two other people who have had this problem with this phone. Before I took the phone apart, I couldn't press the 6. Now it's the 4.The cancel button just completely quit working, too.To make a phone call, I usually just go through the CID list and hope that the number I need is on there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Phone
This was another GE mess up, horrible static, you cant leave the base without fuzz or whistling. I hated it, not a good choice!

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL PHONE!!!!
It loses audio all the time! WAY too much static. I can't BELIEVE this is a 2.4Ghz phone!!! String and 2 cans is more sophisticated! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic 2.4 GHZ Phone
I bought this phone to replace another 2.4 Ghz phone I got (UNIDEN). The first one broke down twice in a year and I thought "Maybe I should buy a new one" (DUH).

Pros: Pretty slim, and light (In comparison with my latest phone, it weights like a feather). Good range. If you install it in a good-center area it should not bother you at all. Like the 2 minutes pager function. Plus it has the option of "pause" for sending tones in network operator. Good volume. The feature allowing you to set it on the wall is great. It keep it's upright position. Complete it with a digital answer machine (Inexpensive some models) and you'll be fine.

Cons: It's pretty basic. Doesn't have any caller ID or answering machine. It only have 10 memory preset (I already have 5 stored) only two ring tones (Want poliphonic? get a cell). Doesn't have any mute option.

I give it four stars because as a basic phone it won't let you down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this phone
I bought this phone to replace a 900 mHz model that had poor reception. What a mistake. This one is by far much worse. The call quality is the worst I have ever experienced in a cordless phone. I've tried changing the channel, but I'm convinced that does nothing. The range is horrendous. If you venture more than 20 feet from the receiver, your call is completely taken over by static. It looks nice, that's about the only good thing I can say about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable Phone at a Great Price
I've had this GE phone for four months, now. I bought it despite dire warnings from users who've had trouble with nearly every brand and model of wireless phone. I'm happy to say that I've had no trouble with the phone, and am particulary pleased with the call quality.

Calls are clear, and without static or popping, from every part of my house. Signal strength is uniform throughout the house, and I rarely if ever need to switch channels to get a better reception. The phone does have a faintly hollow tone compared to a land line, but it's barely noticeable and you'd have to be very sensitive for it to be an issue.

Another reviewer noted that this unit may conflict with wi-fi. I run wi-fi in my house, and have tested call quality with the wireless network on and off, and with the phone's base unit in many different locations. I can plainly state that my phone is unaffected by the wireless network, even when I put the base station right next to the wireless network transmitter.

The features of this phone are simple and easy to use. The caller ID pops up quickly and is easy to read. The numbers are easy to read and sound when you touch them. I don't use the programming feature to store numbers, but it appears to be simple to do for those that may want to. It's not chock full of features, but it does have a great set of features for the price. I can recommend this unit unconditionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good cordless phone, but beware...
This is a very good basic cordless phone that has great sound quality and clarity at a lovely price. It's very easy to use. Unlike newer cordless phones, the model has just one "talk" button, so you don't have to remember to press an off button. The volume control is at an obvious place.

The only thing you should keep in mind is if you use wi-fi at home (or Bluetooth), both the phone and your wireless device will operate at 2.4Ghz and there can be interference. Depending on your setup and location, the interference may persist even if you change the channels on the phone.

Of course, if you don't use wi-fi, this is not a concern to you.

This is just a great phone. ... Read more
