2-0 out of 5 stars Worked well until it fell off...
This item from Garmin includes temporary and permanent mounting stickers for your dashboard. The temporary one worked great until it didn't, rather unexpectedly, and the permanent one didn't work at all (though it may have been user error...). These Garmin accessories tend to be pretty nice quality, but man, you pay through the nose for 'em. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
The detail in this product is not bad. The point of the product is for offshore navaids. It is of limited detail for inland regions. Other MapSource software are better for that. The trip and waypoint management functions are great. It is fun to transfer your tracks to the PC to see where you have been. If you are considering buying this, be sure to check out Garmin's online MapSource Map Viewer on the cartography page of their website. It shows the detail in the product. It can help you determine if the software is right for you. I would recommend their GPSMAP 76 unit without hesitation. It is great GPS unit!

2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of disappoinitng
After using Garmin's US Roads and Recreation software, I expected more from this one than I got. Quite a bit of the information is already available in Roads and Rec., and U. S. waterways doesn't have that much more. It misses many boat launch sites in CT, doesn't show many other features as described in the earlier review, and doesn't show major marine features such as natural and artificial reefs. I think Garmin coud have done a much better job with the space on the CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Improved Map detail, good route creation, and track review
If you have an eTrex product (I have a Vista) the MapSouce tool adds a very nice PC based route and waypoint creation and editing, upload/download, tool. Perhaps the coolest MapSource feature is the ability to capture the track data from your GPS for review, saving, and even printing the actual track maps for your log book.

The shoreline, park, roadway maps, and waterway points of interest are much better than the default data in the Garmin GPS when purchased and make this software and data worth having.

Don't however, expect this database to replace an actual chart, a real chart is essential for any navigation because this data DOES NOT include ferry routes, cable crossings, marinas, depth soundings, or even all of the boat launch ramps.

A particular site to check is Garmin.com for a bulletin they have with a data upgrade for some east coast data that is was in error. ... Read more

These detailed electronic nautical charts look just like paper charts when displayed on your Garmin chart plotter. 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy! Out of date and unsupported.
Garmin do not make this any more. All the European maps have been combimed into a single CD package.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY! - OUTDATED PRODUCT
I made the mistake of ordering this product along with a new Garmin Etrex Vista a week before a UK trip. Garmin does not sell it any more. It's a WINDOWS 95, 98, NT 4.0 product. Not even NT 4.1, not less Windows 2000 or XP. The packaging mentions only GPSes that Garmin used to sell, none that they currently sell. It's a 1999 product, based on 1995 map data. ALL of the products with a European country name in them (France, Great Britain, etc) are OUTDATED! DO NOT BUY! See the Garmin site.

Garmin will charge you ...plus shipping to upgrade to the current product, which Amazon doesn't even appear to sell. Even this offer expires on August 31, then you are completely stuck.

In short, I trusted Amazon to know their stuff, and they cheated me. I guess they laid off their GPS guru. Very surprised and disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Urban Explorer
I used this product in conjunction with the eTrex Vista unit, on a recent vacation to the UK. Traveling by train, I used the product mainly to navigate on foot in the various cities I visited. I found the pre-programmed waypoints of tourist sites, train stations, and even London tube stops, to be extremely accurate. As for the accuracy of the waypoints I uploaded by street address, it varied bit, but was still good enough to easily get me where I needed to go. My only real disappointment was with the granularity of the mapping data, as it is selected for upload. For the purposes of this feature, the country is divided into large sections, and I had cases where to get one city, I had to upload a large section containing several megabytes of data I wouldn't use. This of course tied up precious memory that kept me from uploading the data for other cities. Still, I found this to be a workable limitation since I could use the PC based maps to preprogram routes and waypoints for all the places I knew I would want to visit, regardless of their map section.

All things considered, this product greatly enhanced my vacation. Saving me the frustration of burying my head in maps, and hunting for the elusive European street sign, this product virtually eliminated one of the biggest headaches of what is meant to be a relaxing time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful in France
The Metroguide software for France is more useful than the US version. The maps seem more up to date, and, due to the difficulty of finding anything in France, much more useful. I managed to find our company's new building in a new town by punching in the address, and I was able to use my emap to find it in 10 minutes from the train station. It also seems to have up to date restaurant and attraction info for Paris and other areas. ... Read more

It also seems to have up to date restaurant and attraction info for Paris and other areas. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Garmin MetroGuide CD-ROM for Denmark and Sweden contains trip and waypoint management functions that allow for effective trip planning. MetroGuide Denmark and Sweden contains extremely detailed city maps with street-level information with address-lookup capability when downloaded to a compatible Garmin GPS device (see below for list of devices).

This software allows you to view color maps on a desktop PC, with zoom and pan functions for easy map browsing. You can create waypoints, routes, and tracks, and transfer them between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS devices (see below for compatibility).

This CD-ROM also contains motorways, national and regional thoroughfares, roundabouts, railroads, and local roads in many areas. It also displays points of interest, such as restaurants, border crossings, petrol stations, lodging, shopping, entertainment, and emergency services. You also get shoreline detail of lakes, rivers, streams, and canals.

Other points of interest include various details, from border crossings to gas stations. And with a map-download-compatible Garmin GPS, MapSource will allow you to load map detail for addresses and business listings.

The current map coverage for Sweden includes about 296,600 km of roadways (67.4% of all roads), roughly 202 municipalities, 53 major cities in street-level detail, and the area inhabited by up to 43.2% of the Swedish population. The northernmost coverage includes Amal, Bengtsfors, Ed, and Skagarrak. The current map coverage for Denmark includes about 85,000 km of roadways (100% of all roads), 100% of municipalities, 11 major cities in street-level detail, and the area inhabited by up to 26.7% of the Danish population.

Downloads from European MapSource MetroGuide CD-ROMs are limited to a maximum of 32 MB. The map transfer feature is only compatible with the following units: GPS III+, 12MAP, NavTalk, GPSMAP 162, GPSMAP 168 Sounder, StreetPilot, StreetPilot ColorMap, StreetPilot III, GPSMAP 295, eMap, eTrex Vista, and eTrex Legend. A blank Garmin data cartridge is needed to upload map data to some of these units. The trip and waypoint management functions of this CD-ROM work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS100 family and panel-mount aviation units. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great unit if you need a GPS and finder combo
The Garmin 168 offers quite a bit for the marine user. It is a very good multipurpose unit. It is my primary GPS and sees critical saltwater use for backcountry in the Florida keys.

The depth finder seems to work well, and though I do not use it for fishfinding that often, sensitivity seems great.

Overall, the ergonomics and packaging are typical Garmin Excellent! It survives SW use with no problems, and has a very clear and readable display.

Some features I really like:

- You can configure the screen to show only the info you desire and in the size that you prefer.

- The Mapsource capability to load topo's, marine charts, etc

When not on the water I use the unit in the car. Even without an external antenna it works well, and the built in maps are useful. Once you add in the optional maps it is even better!

One neat thing about Garmin. The firmware updates are free and easy to use. I updated the firmware on mine, and found that that had added the WAIS mode, which improves the accuracy to about 12 feet. Amazing! ... Read more
