Amazon.com Product Description

Garmin's exclusive line of BlueChart marine cartography products is designed to provide interactive viewing of detailed nautical chart data. These detailed electronic nautical charts look just like paper charts when displayed on your Garmin chart plotter. Descriptive details for features typically found on nautical charts can easily be viewed with a simple key press. Cursor movements over the chart provide descriptions for contour depths, chart number, navaid name, and much more.

BlueChart data includes shaded depth contours, intertidal zones, spot soundings, wrecks, navaids, port plans, restricted areas, cable areas, anchorages, and more. Additionally, BlueCharts include information from the paper chart used in the digitization process, such as chart number, name, scale, revision date, and Notice-to-Mariners date.

Three MapSource BlueChart CD-ROMs are available: Americas, Atlantic, and Pacific. The Atlantic CD-ROM covers Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. One CD-ROM contains BlueChart data for an entire region. MapSource BlueChart is a Microsoft Windows-based program that uses Garmin Unlock technology, allowing you to use one coverage area from the CD-ROM when initially purchased and to purchase additional coverage areas. Internet access is recommended for the unlock process.

Compatible products include these Garmin marine chart plotters: GPSMAP 176, GPSMAP 176C, GPSMAP 182, GPSMAP 188 Sounder, GPSMAP 232, GPSMAP 238 Sounder, GPSMAP 2006, and the GPSMAP 2010. BlueChart CD-ROMs are also compatible with Garmin GPS receivers that accept map data, including the GPSMAP 76, eTrex Vista, and eTrex Legend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, fast, and easy to use
The Garmin "Bluecharts" are vector charts, which means they use mathematic algorithms to store all the lines and features of a nautical chart. I have steered away from these in the past because they tended to give up a lot of detail vs. "Raster Graphic" charts, which are essentially photographic images of paper charts.

With "Bluecharts" they have gotten to a level of detail (including multiple colors) that they look almost as good as a paper charts. The advantages of vector charts is that they take up much less room on your hard drive and run much faster on a PC. This is important when you are zooming in and out to see your depth or proximity to a wreck while moving on a boat.

I use mine with an eTrex Legend and am able to load most of the detail (depth, obstructions, nautical aids, etc) onto the handheld. For the full look of charts, I connect the GPS unit to my laptop. The package also includes tidal charts, which are much more detailed and accurate than the little tide chart booklets I used to use. Overall, it makes navigation a breeze...your boat is automatically represented on the chart and you have many simple tools to calculate distance/time to a given destination. It also incorporates additional information on Marinas and service locations.

The Garmin application the charts run on, "MapSource" allows you to easily switch between map types. I have "Americas Bluechart," "MetroGuide" (streetmaps), and "Tides and Marine Services," all without having to reconnnect the GPS unit.

The only hassle is the "Unlock" process, which is a bit time consuming and involves providing the Garmin website with a bunch of codes, including the serial number of my GPS unit to unlock a set of charts from the CD-ROM. I'm not sure, but I think it will only work with that specific unit, which worries me a bit as I am thinking about buying a second unit for backup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!
I'll cut right to the chase--if you have a Garmin GPS unit that is MapSource compatible, and use it on the ocean, buy this CD! Garmin's Water Ways & Lights CD is a total joke compared to the BlueChart CD. The level of detail is an exact duplication of NOAA paper charts--very, very accurate and very, very detailed. I use this software with my GPSMAP 162, and the only drawback is that with the detail level set to high, it slows the screen redraw rate down considerably. but, when you're actually on the water, this isn't even noticeable. Bottom line--this is a great product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I just received my GPS mount, it was very easy to install on the bike. Getting the new battery cover on the GPS was a bit tricky but worked. The GPS unit snaps right on to the handlebar mount and can be taken off very easily. I ride mostly on paved trails and the unit worked fine the entire time. Would recommend for anyone who has an ETrex GPS and goes biking a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, with a simple fix it's a great product
I've had this for 8 months or so and I like it. But the bike mount has a major flaw. The battery cover has a very loose fit with the main unit. It got so bad that it managed to turn off the GPS on a ride over a fairly smooth road.
Here's the fix. Two pieces of electrical tape. I wrapped one piece around the bottom of the battery case and one around the top (this required scissors to trim the tape). I don't know how this affects the waterproofing, but the battery case grips the GPS like a limpit and everything works 100% better now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vibration problems
I had the same problems except that on the mountain bike it was fine, it was just anything above 5000rpm on a 600cc single and it would turn off instantly, at first I thought it may be interference but no it wasn't.
A small bit of firm foam where the battery connectors connect to the little posts and a thin bit above each battery and it's fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Durable and easy to use.
The bracket installed easily on 7/8" motorcycle handlebars. There was no noticeable vibration at speed. It held the unit securely, even through a 40 mph lowside crash.

I did not have an oppportunity to test the water resistance of the replacement battery cover. I don't see this as a problem for my intended usage of the product.

Overall, an excellent product, well worth the money. It'll be going on my new handlebars...

4-0 out of 5 stars Motorcyle riders: very useful accessory, but...
I planned buying it for mounting my e-Trex Venture on my motorcycle. None of the reviews here could help me in getting rid of my worry: will it fit in my handlebar? I assumed it will, so I purchased it. The result? PERFECT FIT. Using the thick rubber strap I could securely attach the handlebar mount and the GPS clicked-in in a snap. Naturally there's a lot less vibration on a street/road motorbike handlebar than that on a mountain bike, so that would not be a problem for me. I was wrong, since I noticed several times GPS suddenly turned off while riding. So be careful 'cause battery lid can actually provoke false electric contacts from time to time, turning the GPS off. I got through this by placing a thin piece of foam over the batteries which made the lid to close tighter and solved the problem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did the job....
This adapter does exactly what I wanted it too:
1) Save the battery while I'm in the car.
2) Increase reception; the signal seems to be stronger when I've got my etrx plugged in.
3) Easy on, easy off. No problems whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and to the point
All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I'd forget about the power down), and I'd have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great, but its another wire!
This adapter is functional, is easy to use, enables continued use of backlight, and saves the batteries for walking with the eMap after arriving in a strange town. When I want to connect other media while driving with my family, I use a 12v 3-Outlet Car Power Adapter. Despite another wire, it's a worthwhile accessory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Accesory
If you don't want to spend a lot of money buying two separate accesories, you should try this one, is a bit bulky but that doesn't matter while you're driving.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works perfectly
Well it works perfectly. What more does a person need to know? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Functional and Well-Built
I regularly carry my eTrex GPS from vehicle to vehicle and connect it to my laptop everyday for downloading waypoints and track information. This cable makes it easy to utilize my etrex regardless of the environment. Best of all, the cable is sturdily made and looks like it will last for many more trips. This is also the only cable that will allow you to both power your GPS and connect it to a computer while in a vehicle, as must if you plan on using mapping software in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars USB is Possible
As a certified Computer Technician, I bought a Etrex to connect to a PC i have mounted in my truck, used to play music and display navigational software on a lcd screen. I found out that the software (along with many others) support a connection to a gps device, allowing the software to track your location real time on a map. Very handy, I just set the destination, and it tells me where to go! This cable allows battery free operation, and I hate buying expensive batteries! Although I do agree the cable could be longer, it functions, thus its handy to have. I would like to comment on the usb remarks. I have not tried this yet, but there is a usb to serial adapter available for PC's in need of an extra serial port. Cheers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great but designed wierd
The way this cable should have been made is with the Y connection near the cigarette lighter adapter instead of near the GPS. If the gps is placed on the dashboard, you have a cable stretched across your passenger seat to the laptop which gets in the way but I have used this cable and it works well.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a Crazy World
It is crazy how over-priced this cable really is. It is crazy that I actually bought it. If you don't mind the price, this cable is well made. I finally upgraded the firmware of my Geko 201 with this cable. BTW, the bootleg version of this cable costs almost as much, and probably costs more after you add the shipping cost. See what a crazy world we live in?

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin PC Interface Cable
This item is an absolute must for operating your GPS unit out in the field when connected to a computer of some sort. Simply relying on the Garmin GPS's internal batteries leaves you with only an eight hour window of operation while if the unit is attached to an external power source one can expect unlimited usage. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good data for SE Asia
I used the database on my Garmin 76S in Thailand, Vietnam & Laos and found that the data was quite accurate. It even has many of the old Lao 'Lima Site' airfields!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but no cigar
I bought this to use with my Garmin eMap. For the USA the detail level is the same as came preinstalled on the unit--major highways. I've used it in London, Cambridge, Paris, Tokyo and Munich. There isn't really enough detail to find your way around any of these cities but it is useful for e.g. finding your way from suburb to suburb. The River Cam wasn't very close to where the map had it so it helps to use one's eyes. The maps are dated. We are developing a site in the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama for the ALMA telescope--the map of that region did not show the Jama Road from Calama to Salta Argentina, a major international route (admittedly less than a decade old--but paved!).

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY helpful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar.
Recently purchased a Garmin Talking Street Pilot III Colormap. The lighter adapter included with it has an integral speaker which I find to be quite satisfactory and very helpful when driving. You will no longer have to watch the GPS screen, as Ms. G gives you voice prompts (as long as you use the auto routing feature) when you need to make a turn, etc. If you need an adapter, get the model with the speaker!

1-0 out of 5 stars MISLED by James Steiner !!! please be responsible for review
be warned!!! don't believe James Steiner's review about this adapter working on eTrex!!!

nothing wrong with the item itself but, this product is NOT for eTrex series at all!!!! i kinda knew that by looking at its description, but the following review just misled me to the wrong way so now i have a headache to deal with when i got the Vista and the adapter that doesn't work on my GPS.

Reviewer: James Steiner (see more about me) from Oceanside, California USA
I use this with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Never worry about running out of batteries as I drive. Use away from home to track your travels. Cord is long and durable. Light lets you know if it is getting power.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cigarette power adapter for Garmin
I use this with my Garmin E-Trex Vista. Never worry about running out of batteries as I drive. Use away from home to track your travels. Cord is long and durable. Light lets you know if it is getting power.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Auto Use
I use with my Mapsource 76S and this is a "must have" item for in-car use. On a trip of any length you are going to burn thru a lot of batteries. But, with this power cord you can turn the GPS on at the start of a trip and leave it on. Also the back light stays on all the time, which is necessary for car use at night. With batteries only the back light will auto turn off after a max of two minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's good
I don't know why or how a power cord deserves 5 stars, but there was nothing wrong with it. Perhaps one must assume that we are now on a five star scale, expecting perfection. If so, then it passes. Normally, I would give this 3 or 4 because it doesn't do anything except forward electrons into a handheld gps, yet it does it adequately enough to escape criticism. Do NOT expect it to entertain or mystify you, however, because it has 5 stars.

What one must now ponder is how to rate the truly exceptional items that not only perform without flaw, but also have some lagniappe that warrants more recognoition. Maybe that type of sentiment is something that can be found only in a review.

Perhaps Amazon could have a practicality/spartan scale and a sentimental/emotional/moral scale for artistry. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Try to find a port
I own a Sony VAIO computer. In the computer, there are no ports to put in this cord. Ended up buying something for [money] to convert it to a USB connection. Then, I couldn't find a program that would be able to send and receive data to my eTrex GPS via a USB port. Was definitely a hassle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excelent for Portables.
The cable doesn't come with any software, but is great for upgrading the software on your eTrek(avilable from Garmin's website) You will need a GPS compatible mapping program to get the full advantage. The cable connects very securly to the GPS, and is plenty long enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but a cable is necessary
This little cable is very, very overpriced, but unfortunately, for those of you that own the original eTrex or any eTrex model with no cable, you'll want to own this or an equivalent so you can download the latest updates to your GPS receiver from garmin and load them onto the unit. And you want this ability because Garmin does a good job of fixing bugs and adding new little software features. But if you can't build your own cable, then you should grab one of these...

2-0 out of 5 stars Good quality, but get the data+power cable...
The quality of this cable is fine, but it doesn't give you access to the power pins that are in the Garmin interface. Get the cable that does power and data instead... or if you're a hardware geek, then make your own with the stuff from purple open projects (pfranc.com) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Vehicles with Coated Windshields, OnStar
My 2004 Buick Rendezvous has OnStar, Satellite Radio (XM), and a coated windshield. These factors prevented my new Garmin StreetPilot III from getting satellite reception. After talking to a few folks they recommended this item. As soon as I plugged it in using the roof mount I received great satellite reception- consistent and reliable reception. I have not lost a signal since.

5-0 out of 5 stars The #1 accessory for your in vehicle GPS
This also works with my GPS V, as the Garmin web site said it would, although Amazon(.com) does not mention that model, the connector is the same.
Whilst the increase in signal is not outstanding using the suction mount to the windshield, it is definetly noticeable. The stunning difference came using the magnetic mount on the car roof. I've been seeing almost constant 9ft '3d differential' accuracy, although on overcast days it is a little less consistent. The cable could be a -little- longer to allow more discreet routing, but it should certainly be adequate for most people. I toyed with the idea of buying this for a long time; it seemed a little (...) for 'just an antenna'. I'm definetly not disappointed - well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Item!
The external antenna is essential for vehicle use. It allows the GPS to acquire more satellites faster and boosts the accuracy and reception in a huge way. It comes with a magnetic mounting, a suction cup mounting, and a screw-on mounting. It's a must have for any serious GPS user.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have.
I had my Garmin III GPS (talking street pilot) mounted on the dash of my Expedition and with its attached antenna I rarely could get (and then frequently would drop) enough satellites to give a good fix. After installing the external unit (10 minutes, no drilling!), I always had a good signal and never dropped it. Without this, the GPS is less than reliable inside your vehicle.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for an automobile gps
What a great plus for anyone who uses their GPS for their car. I bought this antenna for my StreetPilot III. As I opened the box, I was surprised how small and compact it really is (about the size of a cell phone). I chose to use the suction cup method which took literally 30 seconds to assemble. It simply entailed taking off the antenna on the StreetPilot III and replacing it with the antenna and then screwing the antenna to the suction cup mount. Then I took the suction cup and mounted it first on my windshield. When it usually takes up to a minute to sufficiently aquire satellites, the antenna allowed me to aquire over six satellites within 15 seconds. I also suctioned it on to the side window with the same success. By the way, if you choose to mount it on the outside of the vehicle, it simply involves screwing the antenna to a magnet which magnetically sticks to the car. There is no screwing into the car itself! Also, it has enough cable to run wherever needed. This is a great product! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must add on for your Garmin iQue 3600
This is a must add on device. First inside your car you need the dash holder to hold the unit safely. You need the car battery power to keep the unit power happy. You need the additional audio amplifier to give you ample and loud turn prompts. To enjoy using your unit you must get this add on device. You will also need at least a 256 MB SD chip to hold the maps and an external amplified antenna to put on your car's roof. With these add on items your Garmin unit will perform like a champ. I refuse to leave the house without mine. Love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Get a Zip-Linq instead
The Zip-Linq products available for USB/Palm synch are infinitely smaller and with attachments can be used to power your device off a USB port, a car's cigarette lighter, or A/C power. Of course if you need all of the international power adapters there's nothing wrong with this kit, though again I'd suggest there are more compact versions available. ... Read more
